She feels the exhaustion deep in her bones. It's easier now. She's not alone anymore. But they've all aged. Raising a baby alone isn't nearly the same as the horrors of war but she still feels worlds away from the bright eyed girl her husband had left four years ago.

He's different too. His shoulders slump a little more, a handful of grey hairs catch the sunlight and remind them both that they're getting older. That they've seen far more than they could have imagined, things worlds away from Mr. Rasmussen's drama class. Things-

A drop lands on her cheek and Peg blinks out of memory lane at the sensation. It's followed by another, then another, splattering onto her curls and painting the sidewalk under her heels. "Damn," she swears, wincing when she does; thankfully she's not home but her boys and their Army tongues have been making her forget to watch her mouth sometimes. They're still several blocks from home and neither had brought umbrellas. "I'm sorry, BJ, I didn't-"

"Darling, let me see the groceries," her husband instructs. Confused but compliant, Peggy hands over the her half of their groceries. Collecting two bags in each hand, BJ takes a moment to adjust his grip and roll his shoulders before crouching wordlessly.

Peg knows what he's suggesting; you can't be with a person for over a decade and not read between the lines, not develop a silent language all your own. But still... "Beej, are you sure?" she questions, taking stock of the groceries and her frame on top of it. "We bought a lot of heavy things and I'm not exactly in tip-top varsity flyer shape anymore-"

His laughter cuts her off and the ache in her bones lessens. "Peggy, if I don't carry you, the wind's liable to do the job for me."

It's her turn to laugh and despite the wind chill, she feels warm all over. "Fine, but don't blame me if you trip under all the weight."

"Eh, someone at home will kiss it better, if I do" he retorts without skipping a beat, earning another peal of giggles from his wife.

She's no longer a cheerleader but it's pure muscle memory as she places small, soft hands on broad shoulders and hoists herself up onto her husband's back. Her arms lock around his neck, legs clinging around his waist as BJ straightens up. "Better hold on tight, sweetheart. I'll get us home faster than you can say "Singin' in the Rain."

"Wanna bet? I'm si-" Peggy's first few notes dissolve into shrieks of laughter as her husband takes off like a shot. He sprints between raindrops to get them and their groceries home as quickly as possible with those impossibly long legs of his, Peggy giggling all the while, feeling lighter than air.

Oh yes, things have changed. But some things, it seems, were evergreen.

Updated 12/30/2022 for New Year’s 2023

It’s been three years since I put together this little ficlit together. But every year, I pull it out and add to it. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll have a complete story.

Life has changed a lot for many of us since OUAT ended. While I’ve not been writing (or really even reading) fanfics, I haven’t said goodbye to writing, though. I’ve been writing small town mystery romance. My books are available in all Estores. You can check them out here.  Swan Harbor Books

My hope is for 2023 to bring peace and happiness to all. Remember - without hope, there would be no happy endings.

Hope’s New Year’s Date

Words ~ 1500

During Hope Jones’ young life, Storybrooke had gone through many changes, and none more so than around the holidays. They had town Easter Egg hunts, fireworks and picnics in July, bonfires for Halloween, family feasts at Thanksgiving, and caroling at Christmas. 

Hope had memories of each one of them. However, there was one event that she had been looking forward to for years, and that was the Snowflake Ball. 

Held every New Year’s Eve, the Snowflake Ball was only for those who were sixteen and above. Everyone brought out their formal clothes and danced until midnight. And, if she was lucky, the man she was crushing on would ask her to go with him. 

Gideon Gold was ahead of her in school and so dreamy, he made her head spin. Plus, when he looked at her with his chocolate brown eyes, her heart raced, and her breath stuck in her throat. 

She’d been crushing on him for years, but it had only been in the last six months that he’d given her the time of day. Did that mean that he was seeing her as more than a girl? If so, was it possible she’d finally get to spend the evening with him — as his date? 

Two weeks before the New Year’s Eve Ball, Hope was at Granny’s with her best friends, Melanie and Robyn, bemoaning the fact that Gideon still hadn’t done as she wished. Her only saving grace was that he’d not asked anyone else either — of that, she was sure. So far, she’d tried everything she could think of to let him know she was available. At the speed he was moving, though …. 

“Earth to Hope.” Melanie snapped her fingers several times. “Earth to Hope.” 

“I’m sitting right here, Melanie,” Hope grumbled. “What’s the problem?” 

“You were staring off into space again,” Robyn replied. “Were you dreaming about Gideon?” 

“Shush,” Hope hissed. “He’s sitting right over there!” 

“He can’t hear us,” Melanie assured her. 

Hope glanced over her shoulder toward where Gideon was sitting with her uncle, Neal, and had to agree with Melanie. There was no way they could be heard from that far away. 

“You should have told your uncle to tell Gideon to ask you out,” Robyn suggested. “It would have saved a lot of circling around each other.” 

“Don’t you know circling around each other is part of the fun?” Hope grinned. “Or at least that’s what my mother says.” 

“You don’t believe her, though. Do you?” Melanie followed up. 

Hope glanced up from where she’d been pleating and unpleating her napkin. “Why would you say that?” 

Melanie nodded down at the table. “Because you’re nervous. If you were having fun, you wouldn’t be nervous.” 

Did she agree with her friends? She wasn’t so sure. Yes, she enjoyed flirting with Gideon. But it would be so much easier to enjoy flirting with him, if she knew what he thought of her. 

“You could ask him, you know?” Robyn offered pragmatically. “This is the twenty-first century, after all.” 

“I know,” Hope sighed. “But …” Again, her gaze was drawn over her shoulder to the table where Gideon and Neal were still involved in a deep conversation. Robyn was right. She could ask him. 

“Go on,” Melanie encouraged. “But what?” 

Hope shrugged. “My father is a little old-fashioned and well …” 

Robyn frowned. “But didn’t I see in the book that your mother asked your father out first?” 

“That was different,” Hope murmured. “My father didn’t think he was good enough for my mother.” 

“And you don’t think that’s an issue with Gideon?” Melanie asked. “After all, his father and your father have a history.” 

“Which I’m fully aware of,” Hope snapped. “But I want him to ask me. Do you think I’m expecting too much?” 

“I would say ‘have hope,’” Melanie grinned. “But something tells me you don’t need it.” 

“Why?” 

“Because,” Robyn tipped her chin slightly in Gideon’s direction, “ he’s headed this way.” 

“He’s what?” Hope squeaked. 

“On his way over,” Melanie whispered. 

Hope glanced over her shoulder, and when her gaze briefly met Gideon’s, her heart dropped into her stomach. 

Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! She leaned on the table. “How do I look?” 

Melanie rolled her eyes. “You look fine. Stop worrying.” 

“Hope,” Gideon’s aftershave titillated her senses, “can I speak with you for a moment?”  

Hope’s gaze slowly lifted until her blue eyes clashed with his dark ones. “Sure.” She wanted to roll her eyes at just how breathy she sounded. “Can I help you with something?” 

Gideon’s gaze touched on Melanie and Robyn, then back to Hope. “Can we speak alone? Would that be alright?” 

“Oh, Okay. That would be fine.” Then she wanted to roll her eyes at how ridiculous she sounded. 

“Can we talk now?” Gideon asked again. 

“Go on,” Melanie mouthed. 

Hope took a nervous breath and slid out of the booth. The butterflies in her stomach took off at once. It forced her to focus on putting one foot in front of the other as she followed Gideon across the floor. 

He led her around the building to a secluded corner and crowded her, pushing her to back up against the wall. Being close to him was everything she’d ever wanted, but now that it was happening, her heart was racing, and the urge to giggle was strong.   

“Is this okay?” Gideon asked hesitantly. “I noticed that—“

“—Everyone was staring at us?” Hope muttered. 

“Yes.” Gideon smiled. “Are you okay with that?” 

“Why wouldn’t I be?” 

“Well,” he went on. “Our fathers …” 

“Will never be best friends,” Hope replied. “Why?” She hesitated for a beat. “Are you scared of my dad?” Then she wanted to smack herself in the head that those words had fallen from her mouth. “Scared?” Gideon laid his hand on his chest. “Me?” 

“There’s no one else out here.” 

“I’m not scared.” Gideon propped one hand on the building next to her head and leaned in a little closer. “Should I be?” 

“It depends.” 

“On?” 

“Why you brought me out here?” 

Gideon’s gaze dropped to her mouth, then right back up. It caused her lips to tingle and made her wonder what it would feel like if she just went for it. 

“Hope.” He brushed her hair behind her shoulder and took a half step closer. His dark eyes mesmerized her, and his heat reached out. “I was wondering if you would go to the Snowflake Ball with me?” 

Her breath caught, and the words Be cool! Be cool! were on repeat inside her head. But having Gideon ask her to go to the dance had been her dream for longer than she could remember. “Yes!” She fought to keep from squealing. “Yes, I’ll go to the dance with you.” 

A slow smile crawled across Gideon’s mouth. “You will?” 

“I will.” 

His eyes twinkled, and before he even opened his mouth, somehow, she knew what he was going to say. “And you’ll protect me from your father? If it’s necessary, that is.” 

Hope giggled. “I’ll protect you.” 

“Good,” he replied in a husky voice. “I’ll pick you up at 8:00 p.m.”  

“I’ll be waiting.”  

Gideon brushed his knuckles down her cheek. “We’ll have fun.” 

Her breath hitched, and she fought to push the lump in her throat down. “We will.” 

“Shall we?” He inclined his head toward the diner door. 

In a daze, Hope followed him back inside and slid into her booth seat. “Well,” Melanie and Robyn cried simultaneously. “What happened?” 

“What happened?” Hope asked absently. 

“Did he ask you to the dance?” Melanie pushed. 

“Did you say yes?” Robyn followed up. 

“What are you going to tell you parents?” Melanie questioned. 

Hope glanced from one friend to the other. “What do you mean?” 

“You know the history between your fathers,” Robyn stated. “Will there be bloodshed?” 

“Bloodshed?” Hope giggled. “Aren’t you the one who said this is the twenty-first century?” 

“True,” Robyn sighed. “But that had nothing to do with the possibility of a duel.” 

Hope rolled her eyes. “There’s not going to be a duel. Everything will be fine.” 

“Good luck with that.” Melanie smiled sympathetically. “I’m glad I’m not you.”  

“Gee, thanks.” Hope glanced over her shoulder in Gideon’s direction again, and their gazes clashed. “I told him I’d protect him if I needed to.” 

Robyn waggled her eyebrows. “But who’s going to protect you from Gideon?” 

“Do you think I need to be protected from Gideon?” Hope murmured. “I’m not so sure.” 

“I guess it depends on what you want,” Melanie replied. “What do you want?” 

Once again, Hope’s gaze clashed with Gideon’s. What did she want from him? The memory of how he’d made her lips tingle when he’d looked at them had her turning back to her friends. “What do I want?” 

“Yes, Hope,” Robyn nodded. “What do you want?” 

“A kiss,” Hope sighed. “I just want a kiss.”

SUBMAS SELKIE AU TIMELINE AND MASTERLIST

What Is the Submas Selkie AU?

In this AU, Subway Bosses Ingo and Emmet have a secret. Well, several. Turns out they’re the last surviving Selkies, beings who can shift between human and Pokemon forms through use of their magical pelt. They’re legendaries that are roughly three-thousand years old. Oh, and not only are they skilled trainers, but they’re equally skilled with a sword and shield, or even in their own Pokemon forms.

This AU follows their various adventures, from their initial journey from home through the events of Pokemon Legends Arceus, their adventures during and after the Black and White series of games, and more. While this series can get fairly dark, it is overall a tale of hope and healing, and how the bonds we build can save us from trauma and repeating patterns.

Plus, train seals. Can’t go wrong with train seals.

Original Shores

Three thousand years ago in Galar, the twins are born to a tribe of Selkie, beings who can shift between human and Pokemon form with the help of their mythical pelts. Raised by a storyteller father and a legendary warrior mother known as the Blizzard Hunter, the twins have a happy childhood of adventure. But when conflict arises due to the Darkest Day, the twins are forced to run as the other Selkies are slaughtered.

Forced to flee Galar with nothing but their pelts and their first partner Pokemon, the twins find themselves in ancient Kalos. They face ancient legendaries, an eccentric sage, and stranger mysteries still. But is this land one they can call home?

Thus begins their endless journey in search of a place where they can be safe...

The Hisui Incident

A freak storm and a spatial rift separates the twins, transporting Ingo to Hisui and damaging his coat to the point of amnesia, while Emmet is trapped by an unknown civilization and kept as a living battery. Both unaware of the other’s condition, Emmet spends most of the time unconscious while Ingo joins the Pearl Clan as Lady Sneasler’s Warden.

Things change with the arrival of the Chosen of Arceus, an amnesiac trainer called Bedlam who slowly gains Ingo’s trust and discovers his secret. While the clans slowly come together to save Hisui, trouble rears its head once Galaxy Team discovers Ingo’s true form and tries to capture him...unaware that Emmet, recently escaped and with a freshly toppled nation at his back, will stop at nothing to rescue his twin. Can Bedlam and the clans save the day before any more blood is shed?

Modern Days and Sprite’s Spite

A few years after the events of Black and White 2, and Unova is at relative peace...save for the rise of DittoDesigns, a company that promises tailor-made Pokemon bred to order, led by celebrity businessman Sprite and ex-Team Rocket scientist Professor Manchineel. The rise of Pokemon specifically bred for stats and IV/EVs (but without the love involved with raising a Pokemon) is wrecking havoc on the battle scene in Unova, and the rumors of cast-off “failures” in the wild isn’t helping either.

Ingo and Emmet try not to get overly involved in human affairs, but this hits close to home...and then closer still when Sprite reveals to them that he’s figured out their identities, and offers to “help” rebuild the Selkie race with his Dittos and cloning tech.

The twins refuse and attempt to take down DittoDesigns on their own, but during their attempt, Emmet is captured, his coat hidden away as Sprite shows off “the poor injured legendary” he promises to nurse back to health.

In order to save his brother, Ingo has to call in all his favors with the Unovan League members, the various friends and contacts he’s made throughout the years, a certain time traveler he’s waited for since Hisui, and the surprise assistance of N (who is trying to liberate the Pokemon trapped in DittoDesigns). And while they are all successful in bringing DittoDesigns to a halt and bringing Sprite to justice...two things go wrong.

One, Professor Manchineel escapes, and unbeknownst to everyone, she has a patch of Ingo’s fur to work with. She’d helped create Mewtwo, and her newest creation will be her magnum opus.

Two, Emmet is rescued, but too late. There is now also an egg, the first new Selkie in three thousand years. Everyone, but most of all Emmet, is terrified about what the future holds for this new Selkie.

Recovery is rocky while the Selkies and their friends track down the remnants of DittoDesigns and face the twins’ thousands of years of trauma. But at the end of it all, the egg hatches, and baby Emil is born into the world.

No multi-chapter fanfic for it yet, but we have the following fics that may be later re-incorporated into the multi-chapter fic: Filthy and Shimmer (take heed of angst and trigger warnings for these!)

A Fragile Peace

Emil grows up. Emmet and Ingo recover from their past with the help of their friends and their respective partners (Emmet falling for N after his help with the rescue, while Ingo and Bedlam pick up where their relationship in Hisui left off). Everything seems like it’s slowly but surely getting better.

Then Professor Manchineel rears her head again, and this time, she has her newest creation in tow: Leslie, a genetically modified Selkie child cloned from Ingo. The Selkie family races to stop Manchineel and rescue the child before the little one gets hurt by her own powers. 

Also no multi-chapter fanfic yet, but here are some fics with a younger Emil: Hide and Seek, Nightfall, A Place For Us (It’s In My Arms) (these are light and fluffy fics!)

Homecoming

Emil is now old enough to receive a blessing from Calyrex, as the twins did at his age, and soon Leslie will be too. But the twins haven’t returned to Galar since they first left as children, and they’re still too haunted by their own past to return...

...Until the ghost of a Gigantimaxed Selkie in white begins wreaking havoc, and the twins realize that something has disturbed the spirit of their mother. Thus the family heads to Galar to put the legendary Blizzard Hunter to rest...before the second Darkest Day can drive the Selkies mad with power.

A New Generation’s Journey

Future-state fics of the Selkie children as they grow up, starting with Emil and Leslie as they tackle their own Pokemon journey in Kalos, facing the lands and legends their fathers encountered so many years ago. Not much set in stone here yet; we still have a lot of fics to write before we reach this point!

Pieces of me

I was tagged forever ago by the ever amazing @graymatters (thank you darling!), about what parts of me or my life I leave in my fics. I'll start with the somewhat serious topics so we can move on to the more lighthearted ones.

For anyone who has ever read anything longer by me (please note that I use the word “longer” very loosely here), you’ve probably noticed overall themes of fear of getting rejected, of letting people close and showing your true self/feelings (hello using fanfic as a cheaper form of therapy!). For instance, the entirety of Love on hold (Jeddy) is based on a younger version of myself. Not the events, but the feelings of not being worthy of love, and then eventually taking the leap to show your true feelings even if it makes you vulnerable. But based on the comments I got for that particular theme I think this is something that’s relatable to others as well.

In Truth is like water (it passes all barriers), the conflict of the fic is that Draco thinks that Harry hit on him because he’d found out about Draco’s feelings for him, and wanted to mock him for it. That thing happened to me in real life. In the fic it’s a misunderstanding, but, yeah, it happened to me when I was in my early teens and it shaped me. Did I mention trust issues and working through your trauma in your fic writing? Yeah, it’s a thing.

Soooo, on to shorter and maybe more fun ones!

Draco didn’t much fancy sitting at the bar and nodding along to whatever tripe the admittedly good-looking gentleman had to say to try to get into Pansy’s pants, when all he wanted to do was scream at the idiots to go shag already.

This is a passage from I’ll never be your chosen one that I drew some inspiration from when I was on a ski trip. There'd been a party in our apartment, and all I wanted was to go to sleep, but I had to listen to two people obviously wanting to bone each other senseless, but they never got around to it. I wanted to scream at them to get it over with so I could get some fucking sleep, but I didn’t. I sort of regret it 😂

Whenever I use cooking or baking in my fics it’s probably something I’ve done myself (chanterelle risotto, yum!), or watched my partner do (*cough* failed sourdough base *cough*).

He thinks back on the day, how everyone seemed so happy for them, Ginny mentioning how well they fit together. “It’s like watching a delicate dance, seeing you two moving with each other,” she told him.

From And the music plays bitter, plays sweet She didn't use those exact words, but my grandmother told me once that it showed how well my partner and I fit together because of how we move around each other, and I thought that was very sweet.

I also have this line from that fic:

Draco’s voice is flat, almost nonchalant, but his eyes are hard, flinty like the ocean waves on a cloudy day.

I often tend to use water imagery in my fics (can you tell based on my titles?) because I have the privilege to live with a gorgeous view over the sea and I also drive over several bridges on my way to and from work, and so I see all the different shapes of water every day, and I think it's very fitting for someone like Draco who can shift mood very quickly.

In Testing the waters the characters are on a canoe trip that I took as a child. But every other event is completely made up (naturally since I was 9 years old at the time). (Although skinny dipping is a thing I move enjoyed as an adult. Today, actually. No sexy time afterwards though.)

“Well, I mean… aren’t you full?” James puts his hands on his hips, giving Teddy a reprimanding look. “Edward Remus Lupin, do you know me at all?” Teddy has to shake himself to clear his head, remembering James having extravagant snacks a mere half hour before family dinners, and then still eating almost as much as the rest of them combined. He snorts. “Yeah, you’re right. How could I forget that you’re a bottomless pit?”

James’ eating habits in Colour me gone are entirely based on my younger brother. He’s well in his thirties and he still eats like that.

Basically every event in Solstice magic is based on different celebrations of Midsummer’s eve. Except that I don’t get as excited as Draco over the potato peeling device.

I’m not sure this will count, but the premise for a ficlet I’ll be posting soon (that I posted a snippet of here) is that my great great grandmother would tell her daughters (my great grandmother and her sisters), that if they had premarital sex the man could get stuck inside them. And I thought, well there is a fic in this. So stay tuned for ridiculous magical mishaps.

And then there’s the smut but… well this post is already getting to long and I’m not telling you which part I’ve taken from my life.

Happy FFWF!! And Happy New Year!! Which fanfic of yours did you write on a whim? You just started writing and could not stop because you had to get your idea out of your system!!

Happy New Year’s Eve FFWF! So, this fall I hit writers block on Growing Pains and put out a fluff prompt list and got a bunch of asks from that. I challenged myself to write (most of) those in a sitting of a few hours. Some of them I started writing with the prompt in mind but had no idea where or how they were going to go. The first two of these ficlets were Our Secret and Still Here. I personally think that you can see a definite quality difference in each of these 7 ficlets from my other works, because I didn’t give myself as much time for editing or for development, but I’m still proud of what I was able to do within the constraints I set forth myself. I had never really written any “battle” scenes before Our Secret, either (not that what I wrote was very complicated) or humor before Still Here, so those were good exercises as well.

If we are talking about fics I had my *own* ideas to write though, without a prompt, the answer is hands down A Noble Predicament. I mentioned in a previous ask how my husband and I were talking about the incident that inspired that fic recently, and then I couldn’t get kataang in that same situation out of my head, and wrote it in a couple days the very first week my kids were back in in person school after 18 months at home, haha. And the sequel to that fic is still in my brain, so we’ll see if that comes to be in 2022. Happy New Year, friend!

Kasia’s Festival of Fondness - Holiday Edition ♥

It's super late on Christmas Eve (which is the most important day of holiday celebrations in Poland, just a fun fact dnsjjs) or early af on Christmas Day, depends how you look at it dhsjsj and I'm kinda in a food coma and having a beer with my brother. Interview with Sophia Jirafe

Seven of Sophia Jirafe’s fics are at Gossamer, but more of her X-Files stories are at AO3 (as sophiahelix). I’ve recced some of my favorites of her stories here before, including Stones and Bones. She was active in the fandom during the show’s run and has never strayed far from fandom in general. She co-founded Glass Onion, a great multi-fandom mailing list that now has nearly 1,000 fics from 100 fandoms at AO3. Big thanks to Sophia Jirafe for doing this interview.

Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

It did initially, but so many old shows are on streaming now and getting discovered by new people, it makes sense.

I did get a comment from someone who said my first story under this name, posted in early 2000 when I was a college freshman, was older than her by a couple of months, and THAT took me aback.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

It was my first fandom, discovered when I was 17 and searching for info about the show on the school library computer, and it really shaped my whole life! I met a lot of people I still know today (mostly in non-fannish venues like FB, though I do still have some connections in fandom), and learned a lot about writing and just life generally, since I was younger than most of fandom at the time.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

I started off on a tiny forum at a website called Squirrel’s Nest, but I kept seeing people thanking Scullyfic in fic headers and eventually I was able to join the mailing list (which was capped to 500 members). Scullyfic was everything to me — I made friends, betas, discussed the show, learned about all kinds of things on Off-Topic Fridays, etc. A lot of those friends, I would email with or more often chat on AIM (individual or these sprawling group chats that would go on all day), and then at the end of 2001 we started migrating to Livejournal. I was getting into Buffy more by then, but it was still mostly the same crowd of people I knew from Scullyfic.

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

I feel like it started me on a whole life path really — finding that my deep obsession with fiction could be channeled like that and shared with other people, as well as deepening my writing. Online fandom has been a major part of my social life for over 20 years now, and I love the mix of getting excited about things with friends and also the creative outlet.

My corner of X-Files fandom in particular was just very calm and enjoyable for the most part, full of older professional women who were happy to be friends and give me advice about all kinds of things, and it really set the bar for me with my online interactions. Now I’m almost 40 and trying to be that person for my younger friends, as well as having no patience for toxicity and in-fighting in my fandom spaces.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

A combination of the creepy conspiracy angle and just adoring Scully. I remember how mysterious and fascinating the show seemed when I discovered it right before S5, and there was no way to find out more except to keep watching and hoping they explained. Scully was so smart and tough and beautiful and interesting, and as a teen I was just captivated by her (and the UST, though I didn’t care about Mulder as much).

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

I ran across it a couple times early on but felt embarrassed by the concept, but then I read the first in Karen Rasch’s Words series and suddenly it clicked for me. After a while I started daydreaming my own conversations between them, very similar to what happens to me now when I’m getting into a new pairing, so after reading tons of recommended fic by big authors, I started writing my own (the 3-4 stories I posted in high school are all wiped from the internet now, though).

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

Good memories, though because it was my senior year of high school and college, I know a lot of it is just tied to that time in my life, and also being in my very first fandom. I will rewatch episodes from time to time, but I basically never revisit former fandoms because they’re kind of like exes, even if I finished on a good note. I also think my taste in fic has changed (and there isn’t the same novelty of “characters I like getting together omg!”)

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

So many! None of them had quite the same combination of excellent central architecture (especially pre-AO3) and a really high level of discussion and friendliness without being enormous, but I’ve loved them all in their own ways. I’ve done fandom on LJ/DW, Tumblr, Discord, and now on Twitter, and I think I miss the mailing list days the most. You didn’t have to repeat yourself so much in multiple conversations, you weren’t character limited, and the discussion was all in one place, with personal stuff more confined to your side conversations. Discord is a little like that, but it moves too fast and there’s too much noise for my taste.

Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?

Heh, after X-Files I went through a whole phase of faves in the Scully vein — Buffy, Aeryn Sun, Kara Thrace, etc. Like many people I’ve shifted primarily into m/m in the last decade (Sherlock, YOI, and recently The Untamed have been my major fictional fandoms, along with a lot of sports RPF), but for non-fannish shows I’m always looking for awesome new female characters, like Elizabeth on the Americans, Peggy on Mad Men, Nadja on What We Do in the Shadows, etc. And I do LOVE Killing Eve and have written a little f/f over there.

Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?

I’ll rewatch favorite episodes occasionally, and I keep thinking about a full rewatch but it takes so much time! I never saw the second movie, and I didn’t finish the first of the new seasons because I was hating it, so it’s a little hard for me to think fannishly about them when I disliked basically everything after “Je Souhaite” so much (as far as I’m concerned the show ends there).

Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?

X-Files no, but yeah I’m still very active in fandoms.

Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?

I lost all my saved fic several computers ago, but I recall loving “Blue Christmas” by Plausible Deniability and “Diamonds and Rust” by MustangSally (obviously everything she wrote was great).

What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?

Looking at my X-Files fic, I can’t believe how short it is and how comparatively little of it there is (I have lost track of a few ficlets). It felt like such a big deal to finish anything back then! I think my favorite remains Alphabetum, which involved a tricky structure and 5 elements given by people as part of the Scullyfic Improv challenge, where you had a week to write a story around those elements.

My favorite of my recent fic in fictional fandoms is probably the GoT/YOI crossover novel I wrote a couple years ago, for a completely opposite experience to this (and proof you can grow as a writer with a lot of effort!)

Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?

It’s honestly hard to imagine going back (like I said, I usually don’t), but I guess I could get inspired by something.

Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?

I certainly still write, and I do have to give credit to XF fandom and Scullyfic in particular for giving me the start I got, where I really wanted to be writing good fiction. The few things I wrote in high school were just me jamming out romantic cliches, but the people I was lucky to know in XF fandom showed me that “just” fanfic can still aspire to be high quality. I am a much, much better and more disciplined writer than I was back then, but I might never have started on this path without fandom friends encouraging me.

Where do you get ideas for stories?

Usually just daydreaming about emotional dynamics between characters/people, but sometimes something specific in canon or real life (I write a lot of RPF) gets me going, or maybe something I read.

What's the story behind your pen name?

When I wrote for X-Files, I picked “Sophia Jirafe” combining my favorite first name with a fancy spelling for my favorite animal (I was 18! Don’t judge!) Over on Livejournal, my friend Jintian and I initially shared an account with the same name as our website, double_helix, and when she got her own account I changed to sophia_helix, which is now sophiahelix just about everywhere. A little clunky, but I like the continuity (and I do run across old friends who remember the name).

Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?

The friends I’ve known for a very long time know about it, but we have never talked about it in depth. My husband, who I met not long after getting into fandom, also knows about it, and he’s encouraging and also a writer so we talk all the time. I told my mom in college and she was pretty dismissive, so we haven’t talked about it since (but my younger sister knows and is cool about it).

When I was younger, it was something I shared readily (I bonded with a new friend in law school I saw looking at LJ), but now I don’t really bring it up with new acquaintances.

Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?

I just made a Carrd the other day with all my various fannish addresses (Twitter, locked fannish Twitter, AO3, Tumblr)

Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?

Just that it really was a high quality fandom — so much excellent long casefic, so many cool down to earth people, just generally a great launching place for a young fan. The friendships I made with older people were really important to me, and it makes me sad to see a lot of younger people now getting upset about the idea of anyone over a certain age being in their fandom spaces. I hope someday fandom can get back to appreciating that people of all ages can be the fandom type, and that everyone brings something different to the community.

Survey Says by involuntaryorange. Johnlock & Mystrade. G. 9,048 words. I got on a crackfic kick, and this was amazing. If you haven’t seen Family Feud, that’s fine, but it may help with the visuals. 

Corpus Hominis by mycapeisplaid. Johnlock. Explicit. 47,709 words. Gone to a hotel to investigate for Mycroft and there’s only one bed! I think the mounting tension between the two is the best part of this fic - and the payoff is sweet!

The I Know the Steps Series by stardust_made. Mystrade. Explicit. 37,394 words. This is great - Mycroft and Greg come to know each other - first from Mycroft’s POV, and then Greg’s.

Many Happy Returns by sussexbound. Johnlock. Explicit. 5,557 words. John wants to do something special for Sherlock on his birthday. I saw the Co-Bathing tag, and thought, “well, that’s interesting,” but sussexbound makes it work!

Queer Eye: Johnlock Edition by fellshish. Johnlock. Teen. 5,817 words. Crackfic! My favorite line: “Look, five gay guys came in and the first thing he did was lose his dressing gown like a fierce Beyoncé rising from the ashes. No way that boy’s straight.”

Enough is Enough by sussexbound. Johnlock. Explicit. 10,122 words. John is trying to manage his feelings, and shares some old hurts with Sherlock.

A Proper Marriage by afteriwake. Adcroft. G. 1,228 words. I can actually see this ship sailing, and this is a sweet ficlet. (I prefer Mystrade, but if I can’t have it, like when I’m shipping Sherstrade, I can see Adcroft.)

If you haven’t watched Brooklyn 99, get thee to Hulu and start watching! It’s funny, it has a diverse cast, it’s LGBT-friendly (not everyone is out in the first season). And then come back here and read this and be in on the jokes and laugh yourself senseless!

Damage Control by TheDevilsFeet. Mystrade & Johnlock. Explicit. 46,679 words. Mycroft and Greg go on a drive to extract Sherlock from a precarious situation. It has some very awkward moments, but they get to know each other better.

Sinking the Land by emungere. Mystrade. Explicit. 34,302 words. It started with random cock sucking. And then it gets even better. So good!

The Vampires of London by consultingdetective. Johnlock. Explicit. 72,660 words. Here we get to see some real BAMF John. Mysterious deaths have Sherlock in a tizzy. John knows what’s going on, and leads Sherlock on a dangerous adventure.

Working it Out by sideris. Johnlock. Explicit. 111,824 words. The cases on this one are fantastic. Sherlock finds himself struggling with feelings of attraction, arousal, and repulsion. John is trying to keep up, but he’s about had it. 

Beyond These Games by recreational. Mystrade. Explicit. 37,736 words. Greg wants to know about the man behind the voice. It gets complicated.

Mister Big series by L_Morgan. Mystrade. Explicit. 41,007 words. This is one of the sweetest Mystrade fics out there. And not fluffy sweet...just sweet. Well done.

Virtually Perfect by Random_Nexus. Mystrade. Explicit. 19,680 words. A great Mystrade fic! I’ve reread this one when I needed a pick-me-up. Mycroft and Greg meet over the internet.

Cracks in the Ice by Mice. Mystrade. Explicit. 31,739 words. This is fantastic. It takes Greg and Mycroft from pre-canon to post-Reichenbach, and the ending is such a surprise. 

And the Law Won by MofBaskerville. Mystrade. Explicit. 10,531 words. Mycroft has had a less-than-stellar experience with relationships, and breaks it off with Greg before those things can come to past. Greg isn’t happy about it. 

Pater Noster series by manic_intent. Mystrade. Explicit. 26,551 words. Good Omens AU! Mycroft is a demon and Lestrade is an angel. Things get tangled from there.

The Sad Divorced Bastards Club by out_there. Mystrade. Explicit. 19,987 words. Greg invites Mycroft to join a club. Mycroft accepts. I love out_there’s work!

Finding a Way series by MuchTooMerryMaidean. Mystrade. Mature. 116,152 words. This one is a difficult but wholly worthwhile read. TW for rape and rape recovery. I think this is a really important piece, though, the most genuine treatment of the topic in the fandom that I have come across - how rape impacts a person, but also the people around them. It also explores identity, politics of sex and gender, family relationships, and so much more. I’ve reread it twice now, and will probably reread again.

Performance in a Leading Role by mad_lori. Johnlock. Explicit. The very first AU I read! And then I was hooked on AUs! And if you haven’t read this, I don’t know what you’re doing here. Are you even serious about this? ;-)

Bonfire Heart by JessieBlackwood. Mystrade. Mature. 44,075 words. Greg is a surgeon, and Mycroft is a pain in the arse. Excellent story!

Clearly, I read a lot of Mystrade last February, and that’s because I got obsessed. Still my favorite Sherlock ship today!

The Writings | Week 52 & Year 2019

What I worked on during the last week (plus a few extra days, as it turned out given how I started counting) : 

New Year’s Eve - 3,423 words Total: 3,423 words

2019 Statistics:

I started tracking my writing for the goal of pushing myself to write >1,000 words a week as well as see how much I write compared to what ends up on AO3 at the end of the year. Here are the results, which probably only I care about XD

Weeks of >1,000 words : 39/52 (75%) Total words written in 2019 : 227,840 words Words posted to AO3 in 2019 : 149,047 words

Could have been better on the writing per week, though 75% isn’t bad. All of the weeks that were under 1,000 words were actually zero, no exceptions, haha, so basically took a 3 month vacation from writing anything over the course of the year which is A LOT and does not seem necessary. Can definitely improve on that in 2020. And, not that surprising but also still kind of surprising discrepancy between the two numbers of written vs AO3 (because I only counted fanfic writing). Second drafts or WIPs on my drive or simply unused pieces that I still wanted to count towards writing because it was! is where that comes from. And, well, if I did hit >1,000K/week that’s still only 52K per year and either way I exceeded that. So I’m still happy.

Other fun numbers: 65 fics (36) / ficlets (29) on AO3 (ficlets = in prompt fill collection) 23 of these were Teen 9 of these were Explicit 3 of these were Mature 1 of these was Gen and the rest were unrated / part of collections

Thoughts: Huh. I don’t actually write as much smut as I think I do.  Oh right, a ton of the smut stuff is in the AO3 collections. Never mind.

Not including the ficlets in collections,  70% of what I wrote was Tony x Bucky 14% was gen / no pairing 11% was Tony x Steve x Bucky 5% was Tony x Steve

Goals for 2020 : Just looking for >250K, I think. I might pick up another about how many days/week I’m writing, as consistency is a good habit to improve. Got a lot of fun events I want to participate in, so have to keep the words flowing!!

A Year In Review

So I decided to take a page out of @claraxbarton ‘s book and plug some shameless pandering regarding all the works I did during 2017, since it was such a big year for me and my first year actually posting fanfiction of any sort.
