The owner of Knoxville, Tennessee's only Black-owned radio station, WJBE, is fighting back against the Federal Communications Commission as the agency is threatening to revoke his broadcast license because of a prior felony conviction.
Joe Armstrong, the owner of WJBE 99.7 FM/1040 AM — whose call letters pay tribute to the original WJBE's owner, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown — told NPR that the FCC is threatening to revoke his broadcast license over his prior conviction for a tax crime, one that occurred years before he took ownership of the station in 2012.
Armstrong said the radio station is a fixture in Knoxville, serving as a source of news for the Black community — being very much a community-oriented station. It broadcasts local news and weather, church services, emerging artists, free advertising for struggling small businesses and, in recent years, information about the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Institute for Justice, a civil rights group that is representing Armstrong's case.
The FCC is questioning whether Armstrong, a former long-serving state representative in the Tennessee General Assembly, would be able to own a radio station with integrity following his conviction in 2016 for making a false statement on his tax return.
"It's not like this is something that happened, let's say, this year or last year — we're talking about something that happened in 2008," Armstrong said.

It was 95 degrees with 35% humidity today, my house feels like the inside of a blast furnace, and somehow I decided this was prime "watch and write about John" hours. So greetings from the surface of the sun, we've got more LWT to see!
Last Lee Tonight (wherein there is, theoretically, a universe where John Oliver is writing Tumblr reviews of Lee's topical news comedy) Season One, Episode Seven
Tumblr media
(original air date: 6/15/2014) Major topics covered: US immigration reform, Washington Football Team Interview: Stephen Hawking
Trigger warning: racist iconography
"If you don't learn the recorder, you're fucked." "Seriously though, playing the recorder sets you up for life."
So uh, fun story. Remember how last week I said that the YouTube channel was finally starting to get the hang of things by episode six, aside from the occasional oddity of a one-minute clipped joke here and there?
The YouTube team didn't upload the main story from this episode to the LWT channel. At all.
We're still in prime "figuring this shit out" mode! Strap in!
That's consistent across the entire episode. After the last episode, which saw the show starting to coalesce into its modern form, this episode seems to go back to the drawing board and toss all kinds of shit at the wall to see what sticks - it's honestly most reminiscent of episode one. The opening segments are lightning-fast and don't transition into each other well, the central topic doesn't go nearly as deep as you'd expect it, and there's a random (but amazing) interview at the end of the show. I wonder if the next episode will swing the pendulum in the opposite direction again.
John starts our episode banging and then punching the desk, going in the opposite direction from our last episode. He seems to be taking out his rage on the glass countertop, which he looks very silly doing.
We begin by revisiting net neutrality, from Episode Five. (I'm linking it because I wrote this months ago, and if your executive dysfunction is anything like mine, you totally forgot everything about the episode.) In that episode, John described Tom Wheeler as a dingo, and somehow Tom Wheeler was asked about the LWT episode in a FCC meeting. He speaks like a literal robot and refutes, in the weirdest way possible, the idea that he's a dingo. How is that the thing you focus on from that whole segment. How. What? Christ.
youtube
The unsaid caption "Satire is not C-SPAN, however." goes without comment, which is unbelievable to me. That phrase cracked me up so hard I had to pause the episode. I know there was a rich vein of missing the point entirely and subsequent dingo humour to mine here, but come on John, that caption is a gift.
We then move to Iraq, where ISIS forces crossed nearly the entire country in five days and stole $400 million dollars. This bit only goes for about a minute before we move to another topic, Obama visiting the Standing Rock Sioux reservation and pledging aid. We finally then transition into a discussion of the Washington Football Team, who, at the time, were still refusing to change their goddamn racist name and iconography, which I will not be using here. (I did learn from writing this that apparently they have rebranded - FINALLY - as the Washington Commanders in 2022, after two seasons of being Washington Football Team.)
youtube
I appreciate how John lets an extremely sincere and powerful commercial made by Native Americans regarding the offensive name largely speak for itself, aside from one dark joke at the end, before discussing what an abject shitwhistle former Washington Football Team owner Dan Snyder is and how pathetic his protestations are.
It did take a while, but Snyder was ousted from his ownership post of the team in 2021 after a massive expose of sexual harassment under his watch was released in 2020. He's been mired in investigations over financial conduct, fraud, and deceptive business practices as well, to which I can only say "good".
The night's main topic, which has no YouTube video anywhere (I'm sorry), is immigration. John says he has a vested interest in the topic and the audience laughs, which is funny-weird because it doesn't seem like John is trying to humorously highlight his insider nature here. The real focus here is the debate over immigration reforms, as the system is (and remains) very broken and anti-immigrant sentiment is high all over the world.
I do wish this clip was on YouTube. It's not the most informative piece on immigration, but is a nice window into how much John loved this country prior to the beginning of its full collapse. This definitely takes much more from The Daily Show mold, being a comedic monologue interspersed with news clips that allow John to riff on the state of immigration, as opposed to later LWT immigration segments, which tend to be exceptionally sobering. This one is comparatively light-hearted and surface-level, and John delivers the material with a very comfortable confidence. I don't think the segment itself is a standout, but I really like John's attitude here.
We technically get our first animal-fucking joke during this segment, which is about bears only fucking face to face and stops John cold as he helplessly giggles over it. One step closer to getting all the running jokes in order!
Somehow, the end of this with the animated Actual American Tale video is on YouTube, so please enjoy one of the most depressing things LWT has ever put together. It's genuinely far more distressing than the actual main topic segment.
youtube
The episode ends with the only appearance of "recurring segment" Great Minds: People Who Think Good, where John interviews Stephen Hawking. Interestingly, I was listening to a podcast today (gonna likely make a separate post on it) where John talked about how much he loved interviewing Hawking and how he wanted to showcase the man's wit and humour more than his intelligence. I think that the interview is incredibly successful in that regard.
youtube
I adore this interview so much. Never have I had so much fun watching John get totally roasted.
Random notes:
Lee is a very predictable man corner: today we get a black suit jacket with lavender shirt and dark purple tie, which is a great look, 9/10. The only thing keeping it from being a 10 is that it's missing an element of boldness. Maybe a deep purple jacket or a shinier tie?
Lee continues being predictable in a second bullet point: the interview outfit is a black suit jacket with a light-blue and white checkered shirt and black tie. Definitely a pedestrian but still solid look and I still love the baby blue on John, so I give this 7/10.
Please stop making me talk about American football in these, John, I beg you.
"I lost my virginity to the sound of a man ranting about Bulgarians." This is so far the best line of early LWT, I will bear no other arguments.
There are no random 1 minute YouTube clips of isolated jokes this episode! 🎊
Once an episode, someone from the past 20 years of American political culture pops up that I've completely forgotten about and am upset to be reminded of. This week, it's Michele Bachmann, who I refuse to look up to see what she's doing now. You cannot make me think more about Michele fucking Bachmann.
There is an extended interview with Stephen Hawking that adds a few nice bits, like John asking Stephen a meandering hypothetical about him being a drug lord with inconsistent staff.

Max Media to Pay $15,000 Under FCC Concent Decree
Tumblr media
The FCC has entered into a Consent Decree with MHR License LLC and MRR License LLC, both licensees of various radio stations operated under Max Media. The decree resolves issues identified during the FCC's review of applications determining that changes in the ownership structure of the licensees had resulted in an unauthorized transfer of control. MHR and MRR admitted to these violations and agreed to pay a $15,000 civil penalty to the U.S. Treasury as part of the resolution. They also committed to implementing a compliance plan to prevent future violations. Read the full article

DirecTV to Acquire Dish TV and Sling in Landmark Deal
Tumblr media
EchoStar and DirecTV Join Forces
In a significant shakeup in the pay-TV industry, EchoStar announced on Monday that DirecTV to acquire Dish TV and its digital streaming service Sling. The agreement will bring together two of the largest satellite TV companies in the U.S., allowing them to better compete in a market increasingly dominated by streaming services. EchoStar shares fell more than 11% following the announcement.
DirecTV to acquire Dish TV for a nominal fee of $1 while assuming approximately $9.75 billion in debt. According to a press release, the agreement hinges on approval from some of Dish’s bondholders and is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2025. Once the merger is completed, the combined entity will serve nearly 20 million customers.
A Strategic Move to Regain Market Strength
EchoStar CEO Hamid Akhavan emphasized that this merger comes at a pivotal time. “We needed to create a company with enough scale to negotiate better deals with programmers and offer more flexible, smaller packages that consumers are asking for,” Akhavan said in an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street.” He added that the pay-TV industry has been on a downward trend, with traditional satellite providers like Dish and DirecTV struggling to keep up with newer streaming platforms that offer a broader reach.
Akhavan also acknowledged that EchoStar could no longer sustain both its video distribution and core wireless internet businesses, prompting the decision to focus resources on its wireless offerings. He expressed optimism about the company’s future, though he signaled that no significant expansions would occur soon as the company adjusts to these changes.
DirecTV to Acquire Dish TV as AT&T Exits Ownership
In a related move, AT&T announced it would sell its remaining 70% stake in DirecTV to private equity firm TPG for $7.9 billion. AT&T had previously sold 30% of its stake in 2021 for $16.2 billion. The telecommunications giant originally acquired DirecTV in 2014 for a staggering $48.5 billion but has since been scaling down its investment.
A Long-Awaited Merger Finally Realized
Rumors of DirecTV to acquire Dish TV have circulated for decades as part of potential merger discussions. The two companies nearly sealed a deal in 2002, but it was blocked by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Since then, the satellite TV industry has faced multiple setbacks as consumers turned toward streaming services. EchoStar has been grappling with financial struggles, including a $2 billion debt looming and a failed attempt to refinance it. The company’s diminishing cash reserves had led to increased bankruptcy concerns.
Looking ahead, Akhavan believes that the merger puts the newly combined entity in a better position to compete. “We are as competitive as anybody else in terms of our offerings, whether it be price, coverage, or quality,” he said, indicating that the focus will now shift toward customer acquisition.

That is true. It’s called Agenda 47, laid out in a series of videos on Donald Trump’s website. And the only parts that don’t match up with Project 2025 are even more extreme:
Abolishing birthright citizenship, and withholding passports, Social Security numbers and other government benefits from American children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States. So much for following the Constitution!
Deploying the National Guard against US citizens. Make America Kent State again!
Outlawing gender-affirming care for anyone at any age, passing a bill establishing that the only genders recognized by the US government are male and female, and they are assigned at birth. Your body belongs to the government, and don’t you forget it.
Constructing “Freedom Cities” on federal land. Whatever that’s about. “These Freedom Cities will reopen the frontier, reignite American imagination, and give hundreds of thousands of young people and other people, all hardworking families, a new shot at home ownership and in fact, the American Dream.” How would that work, who’s paying for it, who knows?
Death penalty for drug dealers and human traffickers.
Leaving abortion “to the states,” which is the same as leaving it to SCOTUS, and we all know how their majority feels. Trump’s also previously said that he would sign a national 15-week abortion ban, and that he has no problem letting states monitor women’s pregnancies to make sure they are not terminated, and supports “some form of punishment” for women who have abortions and doctors who provide them. Evangelicals are working really hard to get NO ABORTIONS EVER ANYWHERE SHUT UP FETUSES ARE PEOPLE in the party platform.
Replacing academic freedom with “patriot education.”
Using the Justice Department to go after his enemies. He’s very excited for military tribunals, especially for Liz Cheney.
Deploying “many thousands” of US troops to the southern border to wage “war,” and rounding up immigrants and putting them in camps. And Stephen Miller would allegedly like to bomb migrants with drones.
Flying cars, for some reason. “Dozens of major companies in the U.S. and China are racing to develop vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles for families and individuals. Just as the United States led the automotive revolution in the last century, I want to ensure that America, not China, leads this revolution in air mobility.” Isn’t that called a helicopter?
And there’s plenty of agreement between Trump’s agenda and the Heritage Foundation’s plans, too:
Censorship laws that ban teaching “critical race theory,” and reinterpret anti-racism protections to benefit white people, the real victims of racism. Eye roll emoji.
Giving Trump complete control of the FCC, so he can ban any platform on the internet that allows people to be mean to him or won’t publish his lies.
Giving Trump control of all the regulatory agencies, gutting them, and taking away their ability to enforce anything. (SCOTUS already gifted him that one!)
Redesignating as many as 50,000 civil servants as political appointees, and firing any of them that are insufficiently loyal to Trump.
Ending the Affordable Care Act.
Giving corporations our national lands so they can drill and strip the shit out of them. Fuck renewable energy!
Cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and working towards privatizing them. Trump’s been all over the place on this, sometimes claiming he won’t touch them, other times saying stuff like “there’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting” and “at some point [cutting entitlements will be on the plate]. [...] And at the right time, we will take a look at that. You know, that’s actually the easiest of all things.” That sentiment proved VERY UNPOPULAR, and he has since publicly backed away from it.

What factors should I consider when choosing an LED screen supplier in the UAE
Choosing the right LED screen supplier in the UAE is crucial for getting the best value and ensuring a successful project. Here are some key factors to consider:
Product Quality and Features:
Pixel Pitch: This determines the resolution and viewing distance of the screen. A lower pixel pitch offers higher resolution but is more expensive.
Panel Type: SMD (Surface Mounted Diode) is typically used for indoor applications, while DIP (Dual In-Line Package) is more suited for outdoor use due to better weather resistance.
Brightness and Viewing Angle: Consider the ambient lighting conditions and intended viewing angles to ensure optimal visibility.
Refresh Rate: A higher refresh rate reduces image flicker and is crucial for applications like live video displays.
Certifications: Look for certifications like CE, RoHS, and FCC that ensure safety and compliance with international standards.
Supplier Reputation and Experience:
Track record and experience: Choose a supplier with a proven track record of successful LED screen projects, especially ones similar to your needs.
Customer testimonials and reviews: Read online reviews and ask for references to understand the supplier's reliability and customer service.
Technical expertise: Ensure the supplier has a team of qualified technicians who can provide proper installation, support, and maintenance.
Price and Value:
Get quotes from multiple suppliers: Compare pricing based on the features and specifications offered to ensure you're getting a competitive deal.
Consider the total cost of ownership: This includes not just the initial purchase price but also installation, maintenance, and potential warranty costs.
Payment terms and warranty: Negotiate favorable payment terms and a comprehensive warranty that covers potential issues.
Additional factors:
After-sales service and support: Ensure the supplier offers prompt and reliable after-sales support for any technical issues that may arise.
Compliance with local regulations: Make sure the LED screen meets all necessary regulations and approvals for your intended use in the UAE.
While I cannot specifically recommend any suppliers, Aztech General Tradings is a company you may consider researching based on the factors mentioned above. You can visit their website (https://www.ledscreenuae.com/) to learn more about their products and services and see if they align with your specific needs.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States has several key responsibilities:
1. **Regulating Communications Infrastructure**: The FCC regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in the United States to ensure the availability of a reliable and efficient communications infrastructure.
2. **Spectrum Allocation**: It manages the allocation and use of radio frequency spectrum to various entities, including broadcasters, wireless carriers, and other users, to prevent interference and promote efficient use of the spectrum.
3. **Enforcing Communication Laws**: The FCC enforces various communication laws, including those related to obscenity, indecency, and profanity on broadcast television and radio, as well as laws related to competition and consumer protection in the communications industry.
4. **Promoting Competition**: The FCC works to promote competition in the communications industry to ensure that consumers have access to a variety of affordable and high-quality services.
5. **Consumer Protection**: It is responsible for protecting consumers' interests in communication services, including ensuring access for people with disabilities and promoting universal service to ensure that all Americans have access to essential communication services.
6. **Media Ownership Regulation**: The FCC regulates media ownership to prevent excessive concentration of media ownership and promote diversity of viewpoints in the media.
7. **Internet Regulation**: While the FCC's authority over the internet has evolved over time, it has played a role in regulating aspects such as net neutrality and broadband access to ensure a free and open internet.
Overall, the FCC's responsibilities are aimed at promoting the public interest in communication services and ensuring that communication networks are accessible, reliable, and competitive.
