DirecTV to Acquire Dish TV and Sling in Landmark Deal
Tumblr media
EchoStar and DirecTV Join Forces
In a significant shakeup in the pay-TV industry, EchoStar announced on Monday that DirecTV to acquire Dish TV and its digital streaming service Sling. The agreement will bring together two of the largest satellite TV companies in the U.S., allowing them to better compete in a market increasingly dominated by streaming services. EchoStar shares fell more than 11% following the announcement.
DirecTV to acquire Dish TV for a nominal fee of $1 while assuming approximately $9.75 billion in debt. According to a press release, the agreement hinges on approval from some of Dish’s bondholders and is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2025. Once the merger is completed, the combined entity will serve nearly 20 million customers.
A Strategic Move to Regain Market Strength
EchoStar CEO Hamid Akhavan emphasized that this merger comes at a pivotal time. “We needed to create a company with enough scale to negotiate better deals with programmers and offer more flexible, smaller packages that consumers are asking for,” Akhavan said in an interview on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street.” He added that the pay-TV industry has been on a downward trend, with traditional satellite providers like Dish and DirecTV struggling to keep up with newer streaming platforms that offer a broader reach.
Akhavan also acknowledged that EchoStar could no longer sustain both its video distribution and core wireless internet businesses, prompting the decision to focus resources on its wireless offerings. He expressed optimism about the company’s future, though he signaled that no significant expansions would occur soon as the company adjusts to these changes.
DirecTV to Acquire Dish TV as AT&T Exits Ownership
In a related move, AT&T announced it would sell its remaining 70% stake in DirecTV to private equity firm TPG for $7.9 billion. AT&T had previously sold 30% of its stake in 2021 for $16.2 billion. The telecommunications giant originally acquired DirecTV in 2014 for a staggering $48.5 billion but has since been scaling down its investment.
A Long-Awaited Merger Finally Realized
Rumors of DirecTV to acquire Dish TV have circulated for decades as part of potential merger discussions. The two companies nearly sealed a deal in 2002, but it was blocked by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Since then, the satellite TV industry has faced multiple setbacks as consumers turned toward streaming services. EchoStar has been grappling with financial struggles, including a $2 billion debt looming and a failed attempt to refinance it. The company’s diminishing cash reserves had led to increased bankruptcy concerns.
Looking ahead, Akhavan believes that the merger puts the newly combined entity in a better position to compete. “We are as competitive as anybody else in terms of our offerings, whether it be price, coverage, or quality,” he said, indicating that the focus will now shift toward customer acquisition.

Whipple. I want to start watching NASCAR but I have no cable or any kind of sports streaming service. We're not really a sports family. D8 Can I see anything on Youtube or whatnot? (I recently listened to my NASCAR fan uncle explain the mechanics of a race and I was surprised my attention stayed and I fully understood what he was saying. 😂 That's gotta mean something.)
I am always in favor of people getting into NASCAR! This coming weekend is the first week of the 2023 Playoffs Season, so no time like the present, I say!
NASCAR Classics
As this year is the 75th anniversary of NASCAR, they just opened up a massive library of archived race footage, with what they believe are the Top 75 Races of all time pulled out and highlighted.
YouTube Full Race Replays
Pretty quickly after the race (I want to say the day after), NASCAR puts the full replay up on their YouTube channel. These are kind of hard to follow because they're raw camera footage and don't include any of the graphics (displaying the running order, for example), but is also a great resource. They take the commercials out, though, so you get to see what the cameras were looking at while the TV was playing Wendy's ads!
Live, Real-Time Race Broadcasts
Live, real-time race broadcasts are hosted across a variety of networks. The first half of the season airs on Fox and FS1, and the second half on NBC and USA. Personally, I access it through a SlingTV subscription that I've made the decision to pay for, though if it didn't cost $30 more per month I think paying for Hulu Live TV would be better.
MRN (the Motor Racing Network) also streams (for free!!) live radio play-by-play for races, which you can access in a number of ways, among them the NASCAR.Com website, the NASCAR app, and probably MRN's own website as well. You won't get the picture, but the MRN announcers and commentators are EXTREMELY good at what they do, and generally agreed to offer much better race commentary than what's on TV, even if it doesn't come with a visual. There are people who watch the race on mute with the MRN coverage playing instead!
Supplementary Media
Fox and NBC both host regular weekday NASCAR TV programming (talking about the season, drivers, etc.), and they upload the audio of these shows up as Podcasts for free. If you're interested in learning more about how racing gets talked about, and the personalities that shape it, this is a great free option, as well!
Fox creates a "Radioactive" segment every Tuesday that they put up on YouTube that offers race highlights and snippets of team radio during the race--these are a great recap of a race and can often be pretty colorful/entertaining/even iconic.
NASCAR has a surprising number of really solid journalists, who produce both paid and free content online. Matt Weaver, Jeff Gluck, Aaron Bearden, Dustin Long, and Nate Ryan are all solid reporters, and refreshing voices in the face of a lot of clickbait and uh, poor journalism. XD
She's not officially a NASCAR journalist--she is a regular journalist who likes NASCAR--but Matt Weaver's partner, Cassie Fambro, also tends to be a solid source of NASCAR commentary on Twitter.
--
Definitely feel free to drop by and talk about things you're enjoying, ask any questions you might have, react, etc.!! Welcome to NASCAR!

How to Watch Team USA
Women’s Soccer coverage has a long history of being booted around, network to network, and never staying in one place for too long.  The American NWSL has been aired on at least seven different platforms (by my count) in its 10 year history. Similarly, USWNT games have been aired on all of the major networks, and it changes tournament-to-tournament. The world cup qualifying was on CBS/Paramount+, some friendlies were on HBO max, and now the world cup (drumroll, please…) will air on Fox.
Not all the games, of course. The USWNT games will all likely be on normal FOX, but other tournament games will be on FS1 and the FoxSports app. If you don’t already have access to this, I think the cheapest option is Slingtv blue plan, at about $40 for a month.
Match Schedule is here (it should update for your timezone): https://www.foxsports.com/soccer/2023-fifa-womens-world-cup/scores
USA Group Stage Games:
USA v. Vietnam, July 21,  9pm ET/8pm CT
USA v. Netherlands, July 26  9pm ET/8pm CT
USA v. Portugal, Aug. 1, 3amET/2am CT
