Rogue has a nightmare and goes to Logan

Rogue jolted awake from a nightmare panting and sweating. She knows now that she's awake it wasn't real, it was just her brain being cruel, but it feels like she is one blink away from the horrors. She scrambles out of bed a moment away from crying. She's not ok and she doubts she will be any time soon.

She barely realizes she's going to Logan's room before she's outside the door. She realized a moment too late because Logan had already opened the door. “What?” Logan growled out before pausing as he took in the sight in front of him. “Kit?” He asked worriedly as he crouched down to get a better look.

“I-I’m sorry I didn't mean to come here. I didn't mean to wake you up I-”. She was cut off by Logan putting a hand on her shoulder. “Kit, it's ok you're allowed to come to me when you need something.” He spoke softly.

Rogue could feel her breathing getting slightly less erratic, though not by much. Logan still looked exceptionally worried as he tried to lead her into his room. “Come on, let's get you out of the hall.” Rogue allowed it as she continued to spiral.

She knew she was safe, hell she was safer with Logan than anywhere else, but she still felt on edge and panicked. Logan looked even more worried now as he slowly led her to the bed. She wasn't having it as she fought to stay in the little light that snuck through the window.

Logan noticed and cursed lightly to himself, “Fucking forget not everyone can see better in the dark.” He grumbled as he turned on the lamp which seemed to help. It still wasn't helping as much as Logan seemed to think it should as he watched her worriedly.

Logan seemed to be searching for a way to help and came up short before his eyes went wide in realization. “Kit, I have an idea, ok just trust me.” He told her as he approached like one would a skittish animal. Rogue watched him wearily but allowed him to reach out. He stopped a hair's breadth from touching her cheek and Rogue fought herself from flinching back.

“I'm going to touch you and I want you to pull my hand away after a few moments, ok?” He asked and she looked at him incomprehensibly. “You trust me, right?” Logan asked and she nodded. “Good.” He breathed before cupping her cheek. She could feel the influx of instincts and desires that were distantly familiar to her from the times this had happened before.

She pulled his hand away after a few seconds and not immediately, only because he was smiling reassuringly at her. Logan took a few steadying breaths as he recollected himself before looking back at her and purring softly. Rogue was surprised when she purred back in return. The sensation was foreign and weird but surprisingly comforting.

Her surprise was obvious as Logan chuckled and purred harder, seemingly in amusement. This time when he led her to the bed she didn't protest, as he sat on the edge and she followed suit. The bed smelled so much like him, she suddenly wanted to bury herself in it. It smelled of family and promised safety, at least that's what her brain screamed.

Logan seemed to know it too as he scooted back and allowed her to crawl into it and hunker down. He huffed happily and she purred louder in return. It was warm and safe with Logan there to protect her if something happened. Her breathing had started evening out, and she wasn't panicking anymore.

“Your safe kit.” Logan reassured. Rogue felt warmth come over her, kicking out the cold shock of fear. The instincts preened at being referred to as kit, and suddenly she knew without a doubt everything was ok. She chuffed lightly and buried herself into his side, her purring redubbing.

Logan just held her close and purred right back as he rubbed her back soothingly. It didn't take long for them both to drift back off to sleep. Rogue woke up the next morning feeling more well rested than she had in a long time. She was confused for a moment as she didn't immediately recognize where she was.

It didn't take her long to remember, and she huffed as she looked to the side to see where Logan had been empty. She stretched as she got up and listened for him. She heard nothing and concluded he was already going about his day.

She didn't think as she grabbed one of his jackets before heading back to her room. It was cold in the mornings and everyone knew it, besides she knew he wouldn't care. She got dressed for the day and headed down for breakfast and saw Logan leaning on the doorway.

He turned after perking up and smiled at her, “Sleep well?” He asked. She smiled back easily, “Best sleep in a while thank you.” She told her honestly, and he just ruffled her hair, “Don't mention it kit.” He told her and she wished she could still purr to show her appreciation.

Hi! I've been following your work for some time now, and I think you're such a prolifically skilled writer. I prefer the canon dynamic between Joel and Ellie, and the fact that their relationship has father-daughter themes but isnt purely that, yet also isn't romantic. However, I will dabble in some stories about Joellie and I do find that concept interesting. Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what your thoughts are on one of the OG fics, Flying to Wyoming? I noticed you mentioned it in a previous post listing fics. I know that while it's well-written, it's also considered a rather controversial (and at times, extreme) fic, and for good reason. I'm interested in seeing what other people think.

Oh, hello! First of all, sweet new cub, you’re too kind - I’m so touched that you enjoy my stories. Like sincerely touched. Thank you.

I came into the the TLOU fandom from the show, looking for Joel&Ellie stories, and had no interest in the romantic ship - shh, don’t tell the cubs - but it was fics that drew my attention and curiosity and eventually the brain rot sent in. I’m a fan of the canon dynamics too - minus Ellie’s treatment of Joel in Part 2, but that’s a topic for another day.

But yes, let’s talk about Flying to Wyoming because on the surface, it’s the quintessential Joellie story - discussion below the cut - it’s LONG, so buckle up.

FtW is one of those stories that I should have let lie, should have let it be a one and done, enjoyed it and never gone back. I read the entire 600k word behemoth in less than a week, which means I was speed-reading, skimming and not in great depth and detail. But at the end, those last paragraphs of the final installment, I was crying, like tears flowing down my cheeks and I wandered my house like I’d lost real people in my life. (Am dramatic, didn’t y’all know?)

The basic dynamics of the story are there - a sweeping epic, cross-country survival adventure where a teenaged orphan girl falls in love with her older male protector, one of the first people that’s ever protected her, ever put her first. Much like the canon story, Ellie starts off terrified of Joel and what he might be capable of, and Joel treats Ellie like cargo because he doesn’t want to get close to her and fail yet another that comes into his life. And, honestly, this story could have been a platonic story, 100% it would have worked - even with undertones of a teenager crushing on an older man, it would have worked. But, because of the twist the writer takes, we have a whole different angle that’s being built up to - trust me, guilt-ridden Joel is my bread and butter and there’s a lot of guilt in his inner dialogue. Ellie’s a very curious, horny teenager - which is pretty much on target for the character. I’ve written both these angles, myself, and so have others.

So, what’s my problem with it? It’s a lot. The change in dynamics after the FtW2 - it’s been awhile since I’ve read it, so if I mess up the timeline, that’s on me - Ellie is still 14 when they set out for SLC and the explicit sexual activities ramp up pretty quickly especially at the bed and breakfast. I’m judging here - okay, maybe a little, and I have no place to judge - but that’s a lot for a young teenage girl. My problem with it is simply a matter of opinion - Ellie was so young. Am I a prude? Was I sheltered? Maybe - or maybe it just wasn’t my cup of tea for reading material.

The writer is talented, his depictions of a broken world are brilliantly detailed. His depictions of how states would fight states and the scars left in the earth after battles that took place long before Ellie was born are gorgeously detailed. His descriptions of abandoned and desolate towns along the highways are incredible. Some of my favorite scenes come from their stops along the way, but namely the town at the edge of the Mississippi where they stop for bike repairs - it’s a real bonding moment for Joel & Ellie and the town’s description is vividly painted.

Those are my positive takeaways from the story - the writer draws you in with his depictions of the broken world and it’s part of the draw to the TLOU universe for me as well. The whole idea of two humans walking - or on the back of a bike - across a broken country, it’s just so compelling.

Back to the Joellie aspect of the saga.

It’s made very clear in the final story - which by the way is the best title: The Home at the End of the Road is just a perfect title to describe not only their home once they settle in Jackson, but Jackson itself is their home at the end of their long journey. I could weep - anyway, by the final story, it’s made clear that Ellie is considered an adult by end-of-the-world standards when she turns 16, and Joel is finally ready (at peace?) to give himself completely to her. I didn’t particularly care for the scene itself - it’s not how I would have written it, it’s not what I was looking for or expecting, but we’re not yucking on anyone’s yum here, it just wasn’t it for me.

The story jumps ahead by a good decade and immediately takes a sad, different kind of dark turn - we know Joel is mortal (for some of us, he’s not, but here he is) and the writer spends the last chapter showing that they’ve started a family but Joel’s mortality is this dark cloud over the home at the end of the road.

What I’m about to say next is entirely my opinion - I never had a chance to speak to the writer, he was long gone from ao3 by the time I read this story - this is my opinion. The idea of the war between FEDRA and surrounding communities felt like it was taken straight out of The Walking Dead - I don’t mean that in a bad way, just that it felt out of place for the universe. TWD and TLOU take place in different times beyond the start of their respective outbreaks - TWD is about 15ish years after the outbreak when the show ends and FtW is about 30-35 years after - that’s a big difference. I don’t think there are a lot of big communities out there in the TLOU universe - not like what was depicted in FtW, and an all out war against FEDRA. Again this is just my opinion.

When I set out to write Every Night Has Its Dawn, I wanted the epilogue to be an homage and draw inspiration from the final chapter of Home at the End of the Road. I wanted to show that living at the end of the world could be possible for Joel and Ellie and the family they have together. I was so devastated by FtW ending with not only Ellie losing Joel and one of her children, but then she loses her own life. It was too heartbreaking, and I had another vision.

That’s a lot of fucking rambling to get to the point. The story itself is a good story - the details and the way the Joel/Ellie relationship were written were not my cup of tea and I can see why you say that it’s an extreme example of the forbidden ship. It is. It’s a lot - there’s a lot of graphic descriptions of underage sexual activity, and it’s depraved, a lot of it. Does that make it bad? No, it makes it someone else’s enjoyment. It gives us writers inspiration though - there’s a lot he writes that I strive to write, but there’s a lot that I would change, and maybe did a little to fit into my universe.

Anyway, that’s my long winded take. If you stick around this long, y’all deserve a medal. Drop a line if you wanna add something to this. I would love to discuss more.

Reading the first Baela pov, and wow, she gives off such a transmasc vibe! I'm not telling you to make her trans, just saying that I relate a lot, especially to how I was before I found out I'm a guy. Like, her hesitating when Rhaenys said "You are a woman so these are women's clothes", quickly saying she's her father's daughter too when called her mother's daughter (reminds me of 'if i can't be a {correct gender}, at least I can say I'm like {correct gender parent}', redirecting the conversation to her sister when told she looks like her mother, choosing to be her true self instead of what everyone expects her to be even though it's technically 'better' (queen vs lady)... Just, reading that was like my teenage self looking into the mirror. Thank you for writing such good characters!

(i've been meaning to answer this for a HOT minute so sorry bout that, but the dialogue between laena and daemon in chapter 27 reminded me of it so better late than never?)

stuff like this always makes me so happy to hear! you also have excellent taste, bc my bf (trans masc) is also quite fond of stormbreak!baela.

it's been a pretty deliberate choice to write baela as disconnected from or rejecting traditional westerosi notions of femininity and womanhood. stormbreak will mostly leave any further interpretation up to the reader as to her personal sense of gender identity. of course you can identify as a woman while experiencing all of these things, or you can identify as a man, or something entirely different.

the remaining part of this ask probably counts as stormbreak spoilers, but it won't be for anything that's a major plot point within the timespan contained in the original fic- just stuff i might write in drabbles eventually. but it's stuff related to gender and baela in particular. :)

in my mind, baela never really settles down with a man. oh, she might marry one, but i don't know that she'll end up super duper in love the way most of the other women in this fic do. she'll have a ton of very fulfilling relationships, some of them involving sex, and she'll travel the world and live her life completely unhindered by her status within society as a woman. seafarer and traveler baela ftw, y'all!

she will also never have children. i wasn't super happy with her character ending up basically pregnant and left behind at home while her husband traveled the world and also cheated on her. i don't see baela, even book baela, as someone who'd have those goals. i can see how losing almost her entire family might make her lonely, and how realizing she's one of only like 4 surviving targaryens might create pressure to reproduce regardless of her own desires. but in stormbreak, where her family survives and there are gonna be so many little targ babies running around you can't tell whose is whose? yeah she is never ever going through pregnancy are you kidding me lmao.

i've also received a few requests for some spicy drabbles involving baela (once she is MUCH older i do not write porn for any characters who are under 21 aka younger than me okay). these will probably also involve a certain degree ambiguity as to baela's internal sense of gender identity. baela will never desire or ask for penetration, and will instead prefer to penetrate others or participate in other types of sexual acts. anatomical terms will be used for body parts, but when baela is wearing a strap on it'll be referred to using the same terms i refer to male characters' sex organs with (i.e. a character wouldn't be described as sucking baela's strap, they'd be described as sucking baela's cock).

anyways the ambiguity is there for a reason and readers are free to interpret it in whichever ways make them happiest. my viewpoint on these things is kind of like mark hamill's with the character of luke skywalker: whatever you want baela to be, wherever you feel the text is leading you, that's how baela identifies. :)

Ahsoka, ep 1 & 2 [SPOILERS]

I really enjoyed these. List of things I liked:

-Lighting, set design, costumes, everything was done so beautifully. It felt very lived in and everything had weight and history to it. I loved the design work on the ancient ruins, the map itself, and the way each location had a distinct visual feel. The framing of shots and mise en scène is often thoughtful and evocative. Film quality work overall.

-When I was growing up I dreamed of Sci Fi/Fantasy stories with this many women getting to be distinct and interesting. It's a pleasure to see. It's not absent male characters, but women's journeys and struggles are foregrounded.

-I'm fascinated by the two master and apprentice duos - a father and daughter relationship that is more formal and distant (IMO) because of the introduction of that (and what DOES Dad feel about Jedi??? I'm intrigued) - and then Ahsoka and Sabine, for whom that bond is about moving closer. Perhaps, in many ways, it is all Ahsoka knows of being family with someone, and Sabine (in light of her grief and equally broken/war torn childhood as Ahsoka?) needs "structure" and a sense of purpose.

-It totally works for me how Ahsoka is sharing with Sabine the spiritual, philosophical, ethical, and martial components of force training - that it doesn't matter whether Sabine is super gifted in the force. The force is with her, and within her, as it is with all living beings, and exploring it is a discipline that offers her and Ahsoka a bond they need and a sense of grounding that Sabine longs for. The power levels obsession is something I dislike; it turns the force into just another superpower, where only superheroes with super gifts matter. I like the Rogue One and TLJ more mystical pov.

-I thought I'd be all about Shinsoka before watching, but so far I'm shipping Shinwren [edit: I guess people are calling them Wolfwren?] pretty hard and having fun with it 🤷 PUNK girl/Emo Goth girl Enemies to Lovers ship ftw lol Shin didn't stab Sabine center mass - she hit her on the side and Shin's dad is reluctant to kill Jedi trained/force using people, perhaps his daughter is too? Also perhaps she's lonely - how much social interaction does she get with other force users? Esp ones near her own age? We'll see!

Creation Backstory:

Okay this is gonna be terrible, but I don't remember the specific circumstances that led to me making Bláthanna, either. I really just remember the inspiring picture, which was like a cyberpunk girl with red hair, an undercut, and a metal arm. I know, I'm a horrible, terrible, plagiarist. I also think she was mainly made to be a partner for Mikey, and I was just scrolling through pictures looking for something that caught my eye.

She was veryyyy... barebones, in the beginning. I wanted her to be a "cool" girl. I also didn't want her to be just Omorfiá in a different font, so in the start, she was actually a thief for selfish reasons. She was sassy, rude, all the "i'm too cool for you" vibes. That did end up becoming a bit one-note, and she felt really dull as I kept playing her in roleplays, so I tried to give her some layers.

She now has a very outward, performative confidence to guard her insecurities from the people she deals with for shady business. She's playful, immature, stubborn, and guarded in her true feelings. She is hesitant to let anyone in close to her, but once she does she trusts them with everything.

Much like Walt Disney, none of my characters have living parents... except for Bláthanna. I gave her an adopted mother to fix her backstory some and also give her another motivation besides... "money, and because I can". It also made sense, realistically, that a kid wandering the streets of New York would get noticed eventually, so Beth found her and took her in as her own daughter.

Beth also comes with a biological son that is the bane of Bláthanna's existence— Jeremiah. He's almost an idea of what she could be if she really leaned into her debauchery and illegal dealings. He's also a terrible son, and he and Bláthanna clash most often over Beth's well-being and the money Bláthanna gives to her mother, and that Jeremiah takes for himself.

Appearance-wise, Bláthanna kinda sorta stayed the same while kinda sorta not. Thinking back to her inspiring picture, her features were a lot more "sultry feminine", which I dropped in lieu of constructing her own face. I gave her more sharp and less "ideal feminine" features, like a longer nose, small lips, etc. Her body is more lean and muscular, like Omorfiá, but she is taller. Her metal arm went through a few iterations, but was always vague in design. I just knew it was a metal prosthetic and might look alien-ish. Now I kind of have a picture that is close to what I imagine it looks like, but it's not my own so I'm not gonna post it. I just use it to help describe.

Her inspiring picture had her wearing like... a sports bra and cargo pants, or something? so Bláthanna initially wore that in the beginning. That is pretty unfitting of her character now. She then went through a phase where she had a cool leather jacket with one sleeve torn off to show off the metal arm (very winter soldier of me), but it was still a bit... bland, and performative. (oh my gosh i just remembered while writing that that OMORFIÁ USED TO WEAR A LEATHER JACKET WOW— i was going through a phase) I now have a specific style just for Bláthanna that I really like. She wears old 90's band t-shirts that Beth gave her to wear (so bands like AD DC, Guns and Roses, Queen, The Cure, etc), and a leather jacket that Beth gifted her with both sleeves intact. And jeans. ofc.

The reasons for her abilities involve some of her backstory (which I already spoiled a bit so you might be able to figure it out anyway) so I won't specify the why's or how's, but Bláthanna absorbs knowledge like a sponge. She basically just needs to watch a youtube tutorial a couple of times and then she's unstoppable. She is also an excellent sharpshooter, to the point that she will do trick shots for fun. That's a very fun part of her that I enjoy writing :) especially when she's all cocky and confident and then it HITS— anyway. As well as that, she has the metal arm that is obviously abnormally strong, and due to the alien technology of it, Bláthanna had to learn some welding, mechanical and wiring skills in order to fix it if anything goes wrong.

I gotta wedge her job in here somewhere so might as well do it here.

In the beginning Bláthanna was just stealing from jewelry stores and whatever else looked profitable for her own gain, and that was a large issue for Mikey because he wanted her to be good, or able to redeem her, but objectively she was selfishly stealing just to steal. This flew for a while until I really took a look at her motivations and challenges and found... none. So I added Beth and Jeremiah to her story for motivation and challenge.

Beth has some unspecified terminal illness, maybe some sort of cancer. Once she learned of the diagnosis, Bláthanna began stealing to pay for her mom's treatment. I eventually changed "stealing" to specifically "hiring her skills out on the black market to be paid to steal items, no questions asked". So Bláthanna is a thief for hire.

Jeremiah, however, notices this new stream of money, and begins convincing his mom to let him "borrow" large amounts of cash that would never be seen again. So this is often where he and Bláthanna butt heads, and along with Beth's illness not going away anytime soon, Jeremiah's borrowing keeps Bláthanna stuck with stealing for payment in order to pay him off and help Beth heal.

So you remember how Omorfiá and Grace used to live in an abandoned apartment? Remember how I moved them out and underground? Yeah so I basically reused the abandoned apartment idea for Bláthanna. I kicked the sisters out just to move her in.

Jokes aside, I think I had actually forgot that Omor and Grace used to live in an apartment when I made this Bláthanna's living situation. But hey, I guess it's good I reused old ideas?

Bláthanna's place is very barebones in terms of appliances. Idk why but I have a reoccurring theme of one-room-residencies. I guess that's fitting for New York. She lives on the top floor of a condemned building at the edge of a condemned block; ignoring the dangers of structural integrity or lack thereof, mold, squatters and drug addicts, it's the perfect hidden home for a wanted thief! :) Bláthanna's one room is an open kitchen and living room. There is no running water or electricity, she "borrows" electricity from the neighboring buildings that have power (think of a long string of extension cords, ignore the unrealistic aspect of it pls) to power a mini-fridge, a heater, a lamp, and a tv. She has a old dingy couch in front of the tv and a mattress on wood pallets in the corner for a bed. She has a desk and her lamp for working on her arm or anything needed for a job. Her mini-fridge stores takeout and drinks, either water or soda. She has the keys to a gym that she uses for showers and bathroom use— or she spends the night at Beth's place, which is far more comfortable.

Mikey and Bláthanna's relationship is probably the cutest, right next to Donnie and Grace's. From the beginning my idea was always a sort of forbidden friendship-turned-love in which Mikey carves out some independence for himself away from his family as he begins to hang out with Bláthanna. She's kind of a good/bad influence, encouraging him to be independent, but also getting him in close trouble and in risky situations with her. But Mikey also serves to help Bláthanna open up and have a friendship and trust someone wholeheartedly, getting her to be vulnerable with someone other than her mom. It takes a tragic turn when she accidentally betrays him (also kinda spoiled this earlier) and it leaves their relationship severed. Their eventual romance is a very sweet, almost childhood-friends type. Mikey sees Bláthanna as this superstar that can do anything she wants, and Bláthanna sees Mikey as this huge goofball that makes her days brighter and more fun.

Bláthanna and Beth's relationship is really sweet, and I can't really describe it, she's just her mom, and she would do anything for her. She's incredibly protective of this woman that showed her the first ounce of comfort and care she had ever felt in her life, and Bláthanna has clung to her ever since then. And now that Beth is sick and in need of care, Bláthanna feels a duty to repay her for what she did for her.

Bláthanna's backstory is, well, Kraang related. She's a Kraang-made human, designed for nefarious purposes that I shan't spoil 🤭 Her backstory is slightly parallel to Omorfiá's... her whole character is, really, but I think there's enough deviation that they're not copycats of the other... Bláthanna definitely makes more of a splash in her life, refusing to stay in the dark after escaping it. She's wild and reckless and sometimes a little stupid with her decisions, but that's what's so fun about her.

Spin offs:

SEVEN YEARS — Also haven't written Bláthanna's part for Seven Years, I'm not entirely settled on the beginning of the story yet. It's still a ways off, so I have time to think about it.

OFFICE ROMANCE — Same as Omorfiá, Bláthanna is more a background/supporting character, but she does have an appearance compared to Omorfiá's only vague mention by other characters. I did enjoy writing Bláthanna in this modern setting where she is part of society, and her and Mikey having an established relationship.

I don't really have a solo story idea for Bláthanna yet, au or not. Nothing has really jumped out at me that would fit her character aside from brief oneshots. I would have to count but I think I have more oneshots of Bláthanna and Mikey than anyone else. I know I have... zero of Nylla. I need to fix that.

A TRAITOR IN WHITEHALL, entertaining mystery set in WWII's corridors of power seen from below

Period details FTW. I was reading along thinking how little I actually knew about life in WWII when the main character finds a body in a place I had no vaguest awareness of the need for or existence of: A sun treatment room.

A what now? Sun-treatment? What on Earth is that?

It was about that time that my interest and pleasure in the read sharpened to the point of reading past my bedtime. I'm a mystery fan anyway, being a big believer in ma'at and the scales of justice needing to be balanced. The victim of the murder wasn't a lovely person, as is customary in series mysteries set in the Halls of Power. It was a lovely grace note, the first of several, that the victim was discovered in the sun-treatment room. This afforded the author a perfect opening to reveal this very interesting, perfectly sensible detail's existence. It gives the story an extra gloss of period authenticity, as does Evelyne's Agatha Christie-reading habit. The author's an experienced historical novelist and it shows in these sorts of unexpected moments that firmly root the story in time without becoming stodged up like a research paper gone metastatic.

Evelyne, our main character, is an oddball in the world where she's been plonked because nothing in her background suggests she's a prospect for Greater Things...an unwanted daughter placed in a boarding school by her always-absent father after her mother's death when Evelyne was thirteen, she's been given few solid opportunities to develop her intellect beyond the ordinary. As is typical for series mysteries, as fans of the genre know, she's got the most important character trait of a sleuth: Ungovernable curiosity, starting from when her Maman (a French lady, who raised her daughter mostly in France) supposedly committed suicide. Luckily her absent rich-bastard father's friend circle includes powerful people who need that precise characteristic in a woman of presentable lineage (if always stained by the loucheness of her foreignness), adequate education, fluency in French, and unexceptionable looks.

Evelyne's sudden arrival in the bunkers...referred to by the acronym "CWR" or "Cabinet War Rooms"...of busy workers surrounding the Prime Minister isn't cause for anyone to take much notice, exactly as the Powers That Be need it to be. She blends into the scenery. As her job is to ferret out a traitor who's already established in those hallowed halls, everything's proceeding acording to plan.

Until someone's murdered. (There's a reason I'm being coy about who's been murdered. If you know too soon, there's no way you won't know who the titular traitor is.) The murder makes everything higher stakes and involves Evelyne with the inevitable love interest, David. Another facet of the series mystery is the de rigueur presence of a love interest or interests. David's clearly being positioned for this. This is, for me, the least interesting facet of the story. How would David, a senior aide established in the hierarchy, even think to team up with Evelyne, a mere girl and of known-but-stained ancestry? In 1940s Britain? That high in the Government (even if it's not quite the way we're led to believe)? Hmm, said my inner skeptic. Most especially I find the borning relationship between them Doomed because David prefers American thrillers to Evelyne's beloved Mrs. Christie. This is a less bridgeable gap than between a reader and a mundane.

While the usual first-mystery flaws are present, eg too much information comes too easily into Evelyne's grasp for her position in the hierarchy and people "grit" and "roar" things far too often, the author is clearly a skilled storyteller. The TV adaptation unspooled before my eyes, in six-part ITV period-mystery glory. It's the kind of book one reads with keen pleasure in its strengths, and forgives its lapses readily. At least this picky one did.

If you're in the market for historical mysteries, this one will scratch the itch. Nothing too deep, nothing too fluffy, just the right level of interesting background and emotional investment possibilities. Bring the sequel!

good god that finale was perfect. never have i ever spoilers below

1) DEVI AND HER MOM… that last scene of Devi not wanting to leave, talking to her dad.. those mother daughter scenes always make me cry like a baby. ugh. their relationship is the foundation of that show

2) Devi showed a lot of clear growth. like is there some drama yeah but she clearly has become a better friend and better person. she apologizes genuinely, is very emotionally mature about things that would’ve caused her to break down before. she takes therapy more seriously. she even reflects on her father and how much he meant to her and realizes she’ll always have him with her…

3) Devi and her culture. okay the bollywood dance was cheesy but there’s also how she prayed to her gods before leaving in a very genuine and grateful way. that was beautiful to me it shows again a lot of growth from her.

4) DEVI AND. MOTHERFUCKING. BEN GROSS. I am so happy happy excited overjoyed. i knew they were end game. They’ve been slow building from the beginning. even after so much stupid miscommunication he was there for her and came back for her and she actually was very mature about their relationship for the most part.. i was screaming literally at the end i can’t believe it. Ben and Devi ftw!!!! i’m not typically interested in love triangles but i’ve been strongly team ben since day one so this is a huge win for me. also his sex dream about Devi dominating him was.. so real tbh love that for you Ben!

5) Devi and her friends. I love Fabiola, getting to pursue her dreams from day one and making robotics a more welcoming space. Eleanor is silly and her and Trent are so cute. their friendship survived high school and it was so lovely. trios are so important to our society

6) Devi and Paxton. I liked how they handled their relationship ending. she was very mature about it for once. the closure was good their friendship is so good. (can’t wait to go into the nhie tags and find their fans complaining)

7) Kamala!!!! my queen Kamala. She wasn’t as much in this season but I’m happy she’s thriving.

Week 1: Home

Home headcanons for Vex and Quaid.

Vex ended up moving in with Quaid since she didn’t exactly have the best living arrangement and because of this they had to make a chore-chart much to her dismay.

Sometimes when Quaid takes naps on the couch Vex likes to draw on his face and one time she wrote Bee King on his forehead and didn’t tell him for the rest of the day.

Quaid actually built her a bed and now he sort of regrets it now because when she’s in a bad mood she’ll take all of the pillows and blankets and hide under them in her bed.

Quaid totally taught her how to be a bee keeper in they’re spare time and hopes to pass that on as another family legacy.

When Quaid is too tired to clean Vex will actually clean the house without him knowing and will refuse to admit to it if he finds out.

There’s a place for Vex’s weapons next to her bed and it is the most deadliest part of the house.

favorite thing about them: i love her relationship with her dad and while its very heartwarming and sweet how they looked out for each other and he encouraged her to follow her passions instead of doing what society expects her to be (a housewife basically). also how unhinged she can be. mech exploded things with her robots MULTIPLE times and i love her for it, even though she needs therapy with her terrible coping mechanism of trying to turn her robot into her dead dad replacement

least favorite thing about them: not that i don't like skins that are girly/cutesy but when it comes to tracy i don't think the amount that she has really fits her character (like her just around the corner skin as an ex.)? i wish she had more skins like puppeteer

favorite line: "It's difficult to get what people are thinking. In contrast, it's must easier to figure out a robot's engine." Tracy is a very relatable character

bROTP: the mentor/mentee or father/daughter relationship between puppeteer tracy and whiplash kevin, they're both great and the duo is one of the highlights of coa 3 for me. especially because tracy really misses having that kind of figure in her life in the main timeline :'')

also a VERY recent development but i love her and orpheus together. their characters have a lot of interesting similarities that not a lot of people talk about between them!

OTP: like i said in luca's, i really love her and him as a queerplatonic relationship. though i do rlly like emmatracy romantically too! luca obnoxiously eats popcorn whenever tracy has emma over for movie dates.

nOTP: don't really have one for her aside from the obvious "dont ship her with kids she's a whole ass adult". though considering how much i love family dynamic tracy and kevin it feels personally weird for me to think of them together romantically

Rogue and Logan

Rogue had never expected to get as close to Logan as she had.

He was a gruff standoffish asshole with a vindictive streak, but despite herself she was drawn in like a moth to flame. It might have been how he treated her or understood better than the rest how it was being feared. Or maybe how he couldn't seem to stop himself from caring.

She wasn't sure but she knew she loved him, loved him like a father and that familiar love seemed to be shared despite himself. He was always there to make sure she was ok or to just annoy her because he could. It was everything she missed from her own father and it helped, it helped so much.

Logan may not be everyone's favorite at the mansion but he sure was hers. Anytime someone new would show up they always seemed very confused that she chose to spend so much of her time around him. It honestly made her laugh because she understood, he definitely didn't seem to type that you would want to be around more than necessary.

Rogue had to come to learn that a lot of that was intentional. He didn't want to get close to others, but despite himself he couldn't help but do just that. Despite his best attempts he was still partially human. Even the animal side of him craved closeness despite what he tried to tell himself.

It was a day like any other when Rogue had wandered to Logan's room. It was Saturday so there were no classes and she was bored. She knew Logan was in his room probably being an old man and reading something like he always seemed to be doing. She had asked him once why he enjoyed it so much and he had shrugged. “People still come up with interesting things even all these years later.” He’d said.

Rogue could never get over his age. The fact that he was over 150 was beyond her. She loved asking questions and just getting insight about his opinions on things because they were always something unique. He had seen how everything had become what it is and he had opinions on it, you just had to ask to hear them.

She got to the door and heard a groan before Logan shouted at her to come in. He always acted annoyed, but he never told her no. She never had to knock either, he always knew who was outside his door. She entered with a smile and saw him lying on the bed book in hand.

The bed was a mess like it always was with piled blankets and pillows making a nest. If she looked close she could see one of her blankets in the pile. She had left it in here one day on purpose. Claw marks gouged the wall behind his head where there was once a headboard. The rest of the room however was spotless, cleaned with military precision.

Logan raised an eyebrow at her and she just smiled before climbing onto the bed next to him. He put down the book flat on his chest with a sigh. “What do ya want kid?” He asked and Rogue shrugged, “Don't know I was bored.”

Logan rolled his eyes, “Your boredom isn't my issue.” He groused, but despite his protests he scooted over. “I know you have friends you can hang out with.” He pointed out. Rogue just rolled her eyes, “Sure but they're not as fun as you.” She shot back and Logan just stared at her blankly.

“That's just not true.” He grumbled as he brought up a hand to rub between his eyes. “It is.” She protests with a pout. Why he thinks she wouldn't want to be around him was beyond her. She knows damn good and well he likes her around too.

“How could I possibly cure your boredom?” He asked and Rogue sighed, “how about you tell me about what you're reading?” She suggests as she gestures to the book on his chest. He blinked at her for a moment before relenting. “It's a world war II book.”

“Anything in particular or just in general?” She snarked with a raised eyebrow. Logan groaned, “You have become too much like me. I regret indulging you.” He bemoaned and she giggled. “It's your fault.” She told him and he scowled

“How is it my fault?” He asked. “Because I absorb a part of you.” She said easily and Logan growled in annoyance. “How is that my fault?” He sounded indignant. Rogue just looked at him meaningfully and he grumbled but relented. “Whatever.”

“The book.” She said bringing them back to the original question. “It's just an overview about really everything. I was curious to see how much they got right.” He answered with a shrug.

“How is it looking?” She questioned and he groaned, “It's not great. Granted I don't know everything, but they did cover some stuff I was involved in and it's just all wrong.” He ranted. Rogue smiled, she loved when he got passionate about something.

“Oh?” She needled and it was all it took.

“Yeah they are comparing the violence to the civil war. THE CIVIL WAR! World war II was tame in comparison let me tell you that. Sure it was different kinds of monstrosities but the violence is not comparable. Baseline rules existed for world war II. People joke about ‘It's not a war crime the first time’ but it's true!” He was gesturing as he got worked up.

“Each war has gotten progressively less atrocious even if it's not by much. Even so, comparing two is just not possible there's different motives and goals, fuck even weapons. People go about it differently, it's not comparable because it's not the same. It's comparing apples and oranges!” He finished with a huff.

Rogue couldn't help her smile as he finished. “Why don't you write one?” She asked. He frowned, “Why it's not like I could fix all the inaccuracies in history. Besides, who would believe me even if I did?” He shot back and Rouge just rolled her eyes, “Who cares if they believe you, you can still do it.” She challenged.

Logan pursed his lips but didn't respond.

They were interrupted by footsteps at the door. Logan sighed, “What do you want?” He asked. Scott opened the door and paused at the sight in front of him, “Well I was going to ask if you'd seen Rogue but I have an answer to that now.” He grumbled.

Rogue raised an eyebrow at him and he snorted, “Jesus you two are almost identical are you sure she's not your kid?” Scott asked. Logan blushed before growling at him. “Fuck off slim.” He shot back and Scott just sighed.

“Rouge I need your help with something.” Scott said to her and she just sighed before getting up ignoring the quiet cut off whine that came from Logan at that. She would come back later, maybe sleep here tonight if she could convince the stubborn asshole to let her.

“Lead the way.” Rogue sighed as she let Scott lead her away.

TRAJECTORY /  Michelle was born in Valley Glen, CA to David and Heesun Chae—the owners of a struggling restaurant in their neck of the woods. As a kid, she trained to become a figure skater, but when her father bailed on her and her mother because of a drug addiction, she couldn’t afford the expenses for coaching, etc. so she retired from it for now.  /  Instead of being able to truly enjoy her youth, she had to pick-up after school jobs in order to help her mom with bills, and for awhile, her only source of comfort was spent with guys that showed her affection. Her relationships with boys grossly gave her the title of a “whore” to her peers, so she sadly didn’t have many friends to lean on in high school.  /  Originally traveled to Korea to earn a nursing degree from SNU, but got scouted by BCE on her first day—prompting her to drop out of school to focus primarily on training. This enraged her mother as the plan was for her to become a nurse so they no longer had to worry about money.  /  After only a few months of training, she’s selected to debut as a member of Chroma. OTHER FACTS /  Not mentioned in her biography is the fact that she grew up in a fairly religious family. Mom and dad were raised Christian, so they raised their daughter the same. She was never into church, though. She always felt as though she was being judged harshly by the others in attendance. Hell, she even thought that of her mother quite often. Her style was never as pristine as her mom would’ve liked and no one understood her interests in the occult, in anime, in video games, and so forth. By the time she was eighteen, she stopped showing up to service altogether—which her mom didn’t like, but respected nevertheless.  /  She still likes to skate in her spare time... but she doesn’t really have any nowadays. You’d think that she’d be in the dance line due to her past in performance, but since she stopped skating, she’s lost a lot of her flexibility and power. She hopes to improve though!  /  She’s never had many close female friends, so she looks forward to hopefully bonding with her members as they grow closer. This is something she wants to change about herself a lot. INSPIRATION /  For Michelle, I pulled a lot of inspiration from a few different characters from television series, mainly Cassie Howard from Euphoria; Manuella “Manny” Santos from Degrassi: The Next Generation; Tessa Campanelli from Degrassi JH / High; and Britney Orton from We Are Who We Are, among others!

𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖘𝖔𝖓𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖞.

01.  On the surface, Michelle’s reasonably pleasant to be around. She has a deep interest in people, especially those she’s close to, so if you’re a friend of her’s, she genuinely wants to know all about you and deeply cares about how you’re feeling / doing. Some might perceive this high level of intrigue as romantic, and she’s... not ever really going to confirm or deny those types of feelings. She’s a huuuge believer in love and doesn’t want to end up like her parents, but also has no idea what she’s doing when it comes down to it. She didn’t have the best example to look up to, so you know. 02.  Michelle’s really talkative, and she’s witty, and she knows how to charm the pants off of most people, and while that’s loud and present in her character, she also has many faults. For one, her emotions are really strong and her mood is easily affected by others and events that occur in day-to-day life, so she has a tendency of being moody. That, and she also isn’t the best “rule follower” either. Does she care that there’s a dating ban in place for she and Chroma? Absolutely not. Did she experiment with drugs and alcohol in high school when they were forbidden to her? Yes. She’s not the best at making decisions, but she believes that taking risks shape better people... even if that belief’s a little skewed. 03.  Some people say that she might be a little too “sweet” for her own good sometimes and she’s prone to getting her heart stomped on, but she’s not all that innocent. While she’s a huge believer in love, she’s not exactly good at it. She enters in and out of relationships all the time, and she loves the honeymoon phase, but whenever it starts to get too “real,” she gets nervous and bails. Abandonment issues FTW? A very strong possibility. 04.  She’s also empathic to a fault on occasion. It’s easy for her to pick up on the emotions of others and it’s hard for her not to carry them on her shoulders. She’s had a difficult time learning that boundary for herself, and well, at this point, she doesn’t even realize that it’s a thing. Mother taught her how to be kind and nurturing towards loved ones, but she can take it to a degree that isn’t healthy for anyone—especially if love / romance is involved. 05.  Her chattiness can sometimes land her in trouble, but that’s because she has a hard time filtering what she says. Her mind runs a mile a minute and her speaking patterns are similar, so sadly, she can’t control what comes out of her mouth sometimes... pray for her.

𝖍𝖊𝖆𝖉-𝖈𝖆𝖓𝖔𝖓𝖘.

01.  If I were to make any sort of “claim” on what I imagine her voice sounding like, it’d be a lot like J from STAYC, maybe with a little mix of fromis_9′s Seoyeon. There’s a delicate husk there, and it’s a little lower than the others, but it’s extremely recognizable and unique. That is her biggest asset as a singer and rapper. She’s not had enough time to truly make drastic improvements to either skill given her short stint as a trainee, but she’s working really hard to get better and doesn’t want to be seen as just a pretty face forever. 02.  Dance-wise, she’s actually pretty strong—just nowhere near as trained as Chroma’s dance line. Due to her extensive background in figure skating ( and a little bit of ballet ), she’s got a really natural gracefulness to all of her moves; a fluidity that allows for strong body rolls, etc. Additionally, she focuses on clarity and sharpness, angles, as that’s what she’s most familiar with. Michelle also has great control of her hip-area and often adds variations to moves using her hips. If I were to select a reference, I’d say Oh My Girl’s Arin and TWICE’s Mina. Some of her faults are that her movements are often too light and soft, so whenever power is needed, she lacks strength there. She also has a tendency of making choreography look a little “sensual” without necessarily intending to. 03.  Loooves when people call her Mish or Chelle/Shell. Honestly, she adores nicknames—both giving and receiving them. She’s also a heavy user of pet names in conversation, but tries her best to stop if people are uncomfortable with it. 04.  Michelle’s typically not afraid of making her affections known, even early on. She’s the type that’ll definitely hit on you if she thinks you’re handsome / attractive, and goes with the flow if the person responds positively. If she gets really cozy with you, she can come off as clingy in the beginning, but that typically subsides with time. That’s applicable to both her friendships and her romantic relationships. 05.  Her public image is similar to that of Alice in Wonderland and Snow White—beauties with fair skin and wide eyes; imaginative and curious; trapped in purity and sweetness; soft, feminine, and delicate—but with a slight “edge” because of her rapping and quick wit. It’s hard for her to keep up with it all the time—especially when she’s a bit different personally—and she’s barely starting in her career. She hopes it evolves over time. 06.  She’s decided to go by her Korean name as an idol because it made the most sense, to be honest. Though, a few other stage names tossed around were: Chelle, Wooah, Hayan, Rozy, and Baekseol. In the end, she’s happy she’s just Rorin or Michelle to everyone.
