biggest disconnect in pathologic's reception has kind of always been a divide between "patho is driven by mechanics" and "patho is driven by story" camps where opinions only ever come from one of these extremes... around p1's development and release the developers considered it exclusively a survival challenge sim, not a game marketed for its story (despite story representing a huge fraction of the time and thought put into it). In The Society Of Dead Poets goes into so much detail about this. and it WAS a stunning technical work under the circumstances, but the complex story was what gave the franchise cult appeal, or at least enough so for it to get a sequel... reviews from the period tend to go along the lines of "this game looks and plays like shit but it's extremely thought-provoking". there's a little to be said about the mainstream view of a "Gamer" in 2005 and what they would be interested in marketing-wise not tracking with story games yet; anyway, the one-dimensionality here was consistent with the studio's approach to games as a whole (cf BoneHouse.ppt).
so IPL's perception of their work was what informed p2's priorities, which turned out to be A Way Better Survival Challenge at the expense of things like characters having complex motivations (expansion on this has been omitted; iykyk), and they did an incredible job with that & basically perfected what they had been going for mechanically. which created this weird divide where p2 fans think 1 isn't worth playing because it's less engaging as a gaming experience, and p1 fans (me included, to be clear) see 2's story changes as a spit in the face of everything that made the series work. like, neither of these are fundamentally incorrect, but they refer to completely non-overlapping paradigms of engaging with the material. when hopefully it can be agreed that a Video Game is comprised of Both a narrative aspect and an interactive aspect, and that they need to work together to create the player's transformative experience (again, premise of BoneHouse.ppt).
Anyway. that helps explain a lot of hbomb's stance on the franchise, particularly that he can endorse patho2 without comment as an ostensibly leftist youtuber when even the most cursory playthrough is enough to let players in on its gleeful centering of ecofascism... that game's representation of colonial relations as an unfixable divide employing the racist trope of reciprocal violence, its obsession with maintaining status quo, and its completely tasteless approach to MMIW are all elements of Story and thus all secondary to p2's huge improvements on the survival system. in the same vein, his discussion of p1's changeling's route is limited to the constant reputation decrease and the repeated quests because those are the only mechanical features introduced over the previous routes, even while clararoute text is fundamental to understanding most characters... his video isn't like Bad for getting the interactive experience p1 would present to you, but it sucks for engaging with the story because it's not about the story. and unfortunately, on discussion posting websites, we do usually post about story

Not sure if you really do asks but I wanted to know; how you do your little comics?
They’re so high quality, with the painterly style and all, and you seem to make so many of them!
my ask policy is i'd like to do em better but generally if i dont reply instantly or have an easy answer i'll let them gather dust in the box and fail to ever get to it
luckily for this one i have an easy way out since i can just point you to the post i made on that a while ago which is pretty much entirely still valid

could i ask how you made your own shaker charm?? :0 i really wanna make my own stuff but idk what manufacturers to use and yours looks so good!!
i used vograce :]
i have 0 experience in this kind of thing and this was my first time doing it but it was pretty easy over all
https://vograce.com/collections/custom-acrylic-keychains/products/custom-shaker-keychain
^ here's the page for the custom shaker charms! you're able to select the size, whether you want sequins or not, amount of acrylic pieces inside the charm and so on (mine is 3.5 inch)
Tumblr media
and this is the image I sent to turn into the charm! you're able to send (transparent) pngs as files as long as you label what layer of the charm is which and etc
also vograce only takes cmyk color profiles! and 300+ dpi (the file requeiments are listed on the site)
(ALSO THE IMAGE HAS TO BE LARGE ENOUGH)
the minimum you're allowed to buy at once is 3

hi! i love reading your fics but i specifically love the social media shenanigans in dearly beloathed. i was wondering how you would feel if i took some inspiration from that for a fic of mine because i would love to write something that's very similarly formatted but i wanted to make sure you were fine with that (cause i'm assuming it took some time and effort to come up with) before i did. anyways your writing is awesome and i love reading it
Yes sure of course! I took inspiration from ao3 fics (F1 fandom in particular is stunning at formatting, I have so much respect for their dedication), such as this one (I basically took the formatting from this) and this Twitch streamer AU. If you're posting on ao3, there's the option of playing with HTML/CSS for a more "realistic" socmed interface, for example this one for Twitter which is magic to me. This one is an extremely impressive Discord mockup. An Unauthorised Fandom Treatise is a nice look into mid 2010s Superwholock era fandom whereas F1 rpf and indeed mcyt / streamer stuff is more "modern". Anyways yeah there's a lot of potential in this genre of fics and loads of stuff to check out on ao3 if you wish :) I love scrolling through the Unconventional Format tag because people are just so creative. Good luck with your writing!

Some analysis of the overlap between Homestuck chumhandles/trolltags and Rain World iterator names (and pseudonyms)
because what else do you do when you're bored and have Imminent Tasks to do?
To start with, though, some analysis of each individual category to formalize the patterns and "rules" of both naming types!
Chumhandles actually follow a pretty consistent set of rules other than the session-specific ATGC initial conventions! In particular:
It must be either two words exactly, or in the rare edge case of a session leader, one word split between a prefix and a noun (ectoBiologist, carcinoGeneticist). One is too few; three is right out.
No chumhandle is less than four syllables, or more than eight, although one-syllable words are allowed in either half (e.g. twinArmageddons, arachnidsGrip). The longest individual words seem to cap out at 5 syllables (terminally, auxiliatrix).
The most common format is adjective/modifier + noun, with the noun generally being some kind of person or role. (i.e. trickster, biologist, therapist, godhead, gnostic, toreador, geneticist, auxiliatrix, calibrator, culler, gumshoe, gnostalgic, terror) but not always (armageddons, catnip, grip, umbra/ge, testicle, aquarium). The few remaining exceptions either 1) put the noun first (apocalypseArisen), 2) consist of an adverb and adjective instead (terminallyCapricious), or… whatever the fuck Dirk and Tavros had going on (timaeusTestified, adiosToreador).
There is an overall preference for "fancy" and somewhat obscure word choices.
Non-english words are uncommon but acceptable (adiosToreador).
Actually, I'm not sure they even have to be real words either; "gnostalgic" seems to be more of a pun than anything else
For the humans, there tends to be a trend of specific cultural references, generally gnostic or otherwise religious (gardenGnostic, golgothasTerror, timaeusTestified (philosophy but we'll count it), tipsyGnostalgic, arguably turntechGodhead); in trolltags, there's a trend of negative descriptors, violence, and references to the apocalypse.
Iterator names seem to be a little looser overall, probably not helped by the multiple groups of devs not always 100% agreeing re: lore. Thus we can probably say more about acceptable chumhandles than acceptable iterator names, although templates clearly do exist.
Names use whole words and form full phrases, though those phrases don't have to be nouns
Permissible nouns tend to be restricted in category - mostly inanimate natural entities (Moon, Pebble, Sun(s), Straw, Wind, etc) or abstract qualities/behaviors/concepts (Innocence, Harassment)
For natural objects, nouns tend to be simple - one syllable, two at most. More abstract qualities are allowed longer, fancier nouns.
Observed formats/templates include: "[number] [optional adj.] [object]" (Five Pebbles, Seven Red Suns), "[verb]s [preposition] [object]" (Looks to the Moon), "[adjective] [object or abstract quality]" (Unparalleled Innocence, Grey/Chasing Wind, "Erratic Pulse"; in Downpour: Pleading Intellect, Secluded Instinct, Wandering Omen, Gazing Stars), "[noun] of [object]" (Sliver of Straw; in Downpour: Epoch of Clouds). No Significant Harassment is a bit of an outlier but arguably fits group 3, with "No Significant" as the adjective/descriptor part.
The first category of names also seems to overlap the strongest with Ancient naming conventions, so the type of object could speculatively be extended to non-natural objects like bells, beads, etc (though those also seem to be mainly low-tech and "simple" objects), but there's not clear precedent for it.
Overall tone of names is neutral to positive, which makes sense given the context of iterators as the Ancients' "gift to the world" and all that
Looking at these analyses, we can find there is surprisingly small overlap between the two naming conventions! (Although it definitely exists.)
The greatest overlap is probably in iterator names that fit the third template ([adj.] [obj/quality]), most of which can comfortably pass for chumhandles so long as they're just two words and fit the four-syllable minimum. So erraticPulse [EP], unparalleledInnocence [UI], pleadingIntellect [PI] etc scan pretty well.
Chumhandles to iterator names is actually a lot harder, mostly because the range of appropriate nouns for iterator names seems to be narrower overall, and many chumhandles make more explicit cultural or material references which don't translate well into Rain World. Additionally, a lot of trolltags have very negative leaning names, while iterator names tend to be more neutral or even positive in tone. The best few I'd say are maybe Terminally Capricious, Apocalypse Arisen (doesn't strictly fit the naming template but has the vibes~ ok), Undying Umbrage and tentatively Arachnid's Grip (if arachnids can be assumed sufficiently existent for the reference to work), but none of them fully fit the vibes for a proper iterator IMO. Ironically, I've had better luck taking a page out of SBURB Glitch FAQ's book and converting soundtrack titles - Endless Climb, Upward Movement, Plays the Wind, Carefree Action, etc.
This was totally unnecessary but uh. Yeah.

I take a more lax tone on here often, but for this post I will not be. Especially as my platform grows, I want my audience to be aware of the kind of etiquette I wish to maintain within this community. There's lots of new people here, so let's go over a few things.
Let me be perfectly clear: If you see me complain about anything on here or on any other platform, that is not a call to action. I do not condone nor do I support bullying, harassing, or even just speaking to another creator on my behalf. I don't care if it is said kindly, refrain from doing so please. I will also never openly express who I am speaking of. It's best not to speculate either especially when you are unaware who I am friendly with. You won't see my publicly address anyone in that manner unless it is something pertaining to a serious topic. (i.e, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.) The same way you have access to another creator is the same way I do. In some cases even more so. I am fully capable of speaking with an individual on my own accord and privately. I have a lot of love and respect for other creators in the community. Do not bother them, do not harass them.
Regarding my series, I genuinely love and appreciate that so many of you enjoy Lykaia. I am glad you look for it. Just know that it is my responsibility alone to safeguard my series and any of my other creations. It is simply your responsibility as my audience to just enjoy the series! Lykaia will be around. I have no plans to stop making it yet. If it is in the cards for me, I fully intend to have an entire year of Lykaia content. We can partake in gossiping about the episodes together. I love telling you guys more about the lore. I love interacting with you guys! My platform is intended for that kind of interaction. I can handle things on the back end. You guys are just here for a good time, so please enjoy that.
Lastly, regarding general interactions with me, please be respectful. I enjoy speaking with all of you casually. Don't be surprised when I respond! Of course I'll respond if I see it! Unless it's something rude about myself or another creator. However, if said creator is openly bigoted or any of the -ists or -isms, then.. hats off. We can gossip about Lykaia until the day's end. If you hate Kaila, that's fine. If you think Imogen is dumb, that's okay too. If you hate Lou, you just may be a monster but that's also okay! Characters, okay! Real people, not okay! I peruse around here a lot, so if I see you're being unjustly rude to another creator then I will block you. There's no space for hate here in any form unless it is pertaining to the series. Don't worry, I am still a hater at heart, so I will continue to be vocal about things I dislike. (Just saw a patreon tier for $100, rant currently pending.) Overall, I want this to be an enjoyable space for everyone. Let's keep it fun and kind. In reference to Lykaia, let's keep it messy. I love the show drama.
Thanks! Love you cuties!

The Martian messages email list is supposed to go into 2025 I think. Do you know if you’ll be doing it more than once? Like have it start again in November of 2025 or is it just a one time thing? I know it’s probably a lot of work to run something like this so no worries if it’s a one off but I love getting stuff like this and Dracula daily in my inbox 💜💜
Thanks for the ask! I think I've mentioned it before in passing, but I'll make it clear here: I am definitely planning on continuing Martian Messages in 2025! I'm not sure what that will look like yet, because I don't really want to keep using Substack, but I'm currently looking into alternatives and so far the show is still on. Most of the hard work is over, so restarting isn't actually too much of an effort (just a little bit tedious).
The impression I'm getting is that people would prefer an email list, so I'm looking into making that happen using other newsletter programs. If nothing else, I'll migrate to this blog instead, but that's a sort of "last resort" plan. I'd certainly welcome any ideas!

Well ok I made an artfight account, remains to be seen how much I'll be participating. Started thinking about character ref sheets and it has me considering previously unheard-of questions such as "what does Ander, my favorite oc whom I've been developing for 6+ years, actually wear"
