Commission! (PHIGHTING!)

WOOHOOO finished commission for @/.r9cket on discord :3! This was a really fun project to work on + I learned a lot of things with it!

commissions are currently closed as I’m backed up at the moment with other owed art pieces and art fight reference sheets! I’ll probably open them in a few weeks once I get done with some of these other projects I have, but for now they are closed indefinitely >:3!

The key to making a good smiling friends oc is to focus on the character’s silhouette.

All of these characters can be easily distinguished. You can see their expressions, pose, defining features, and even clothing JUST from the silhouette.

To create a character, play around with general shapes and simple designs (simple enough to animate relatively easily) and then turn what you have into a silhouette. Tweak it until you can clearly see defining features without the design being too crowded.

You can see some early designs of my character Karen here. She was originally more animal-like, had bracelets, and wore pants. The bracelets didn’t translate well to a silhouette, and if I made them pronounced enough to be distinguished it made the design too cluttered. Changing from pants to a skirt really made the outfit stand out. Her weird ear things just didn’t translate, so she became Bug instead.

This is just for fun!!! I’ve just had multiple people tell me that Karen looks like she would be an actual character, so I thought I would explain my process. I know this is just very simple animation and character design basics, but it’s still helpful to keep it in mind. This also applies to human characters!!!

In his think tank design, his mouth monitor is always off to one side, and while his eye monitors are both the same size, the graphic displayed on one is larger than the other. Has a lot of scuff marks / dents / chips.

His glasses are supposed to be bigger, like arcade's. I drew this at 3 am shhhh
