When F40PHs Were New
Here we see a southbound Amtrak Illini, number 391, rolling by Champaign Tower, on the Illinois Central (ICG at the time).
This EMD F40PH was very close to being brand new at the time (built in April of ’76). We came back later that evening, once it was turned around for its morning run north, and did some night shots.

While pulling the Eastbound California Zephyr through Donner Pass, Amtrak F40PHs 249, 305, and 243, assisted by Southern Pacific SD40T-2 8314, urge onwards as they confront the storm. The harsh winter weather serves as a reminder of when the snowbound City of San Francisco train got stuck for several days during one of the worst blizzards of the 20th century.

SP 9779, Pine Bluff, AR.
A view at the Pine Bluff service track on a Locomotive Management field trip. Amtrak F40's were leased by Union Pacific RR for a short time but their small fuel tanks was a PITA as they would barely make Chicago-PBluff before running dry. This is an interesting lashup with the GP60 - F40PH - Dash9.

Receiving Orders/Station Stop
Train orders, in the form of paper flimsies, are set up in both the upper and lower forks here at Effingham, Illinois. The train approaching the station is an eastbound Amtrak National Limited.
While the fireman is ready to grab the orders while rolling by, it seems the conductor might get his by walking over and snagging them while on foot in this case, once the train is stopped, but I can’t recall if this happened. Once the train is at rest, we see the Amtrak employees ready to gather some baggage on an ancient cart.
This is all happening on the Conrail line between Indianapolis and St. Louis, which is the former Pennsylvania (and then Penn Central) here seventy miles west of Terre Haute. The diamond for the Illinois Central north-south mainline is just behind the locomotive in this image.

After turning around on the wye junction, Grand Canyon Railway F40PHs No. 237 and No. 4128 rest up while the passengers take some time to enjoy the Grand Canyon. No. 237 started out life working for Amtrak while No. 4128 originally operated for New Jeresy Transit and was built as an F40PH-2. The only thing that hasn't changed about these two engines was their running numbers as they have kept them since they were built.
