sorry but i am SO deeply tired of the 'aphobia isnt real' arguments because they are literally always being conducted in such bad faith. NO there is not specific societal or legal discrimation against aces and aros BECAUSE we are asexual and or aromantic. you cannot hold specifically bigoted beliefs towards a group you do not even know exist. there ARE, however, underlying and deeply pervasive systems and beliefs that actively erase, dehumanise and make life tangibly more difficult for aro and ace people on a social, economic and legal basis. most of this is due to hyperinvisibility, the medicalisation of any nonnormative + misunderstood orientations, the elevation of romance + romantic structures as the most important aspects of interpersonal relationships in society, as well as the nuclear atomisation of the family. among other things. like. amatonormativity has never been ABOUT aromantic people specfically oh my GOD. its simply the underlying social belief that everyone is expected to be in monogamous romantic relationships and that those relationships are expected to the default centre of one's life. its something that affects EVERYONE! but within that it affects aromantic people in a specific and heightened way because of our inability to participate in it in a societally acceptable way. like these are not 'aromantic' or 'asexual' or 'polyamorous' issues specifically. these are theories and terms that originated within feminist + queer sociology studies! its all part of the wider underlying social fabric! aspec people are simply pointing out that we are often affected by these things in unique and often unseen ways.

the idea that we believe people actively 'hate' us for being asexual or aromantic is completely ridiculous. most people i know do not even know the definition of those words! so how could they hate me for it. they could however, for example, hold the pervasive + societally unchallenged belief that not experiencing sexual or romantic attraction is a medical issue or something concerningly abnormal in a human being + something i should get fixed. and its not uncommon that when you DO explain that its simply your orientation to them, they continue to medicalise it and see it as some sort of issue. genuinely so deeply tired of having to explain this to people time and time again when they only want to cherry pick the most ridiculous arguments to respond to and then act as if that's a majority held opinion in the aspec community. like i actually think we are aware of how society views us we're not fucking deluded and stupid. we don't have victim complexes we are just pointing out facts that yall are so desperate to ignore. UGHHHHH

I need vanilla fat liberationists to understand that every time they open up their mouths about feedism and fat fetishes they sound like "do they know it's Christmas" lmao. Their sudden blind spot when it comes to reasoning and fat politics because of their own disgust and fear is just so blatantly, bafflingly obvious. I don't get how they don't see how patronizing, paternalistic, ignorant, self-centered, and rude they are, especially toward fat feedists... They never bother to do any research (they rarely even get the basic terminology or definitions right), and god forbid they actually talk to a feedist or invite them to discussions about their own experiences and subcultures. As if there's no way we could ever have anything meaningful to say, because of course what they know about feedism and fat fetishism must be all there is to know.

And on top of it all, they always speak about us like there's no way we could ever be listening to what they're saying. But sorry! We can hear you! And nothing they're saying about us is new to us, none of it is interesting, and none of it is something we haven't thoroughly responded to or debunked or explained to them or consistently continued to address and combat or thought of already on our own decades ago. It's the same tired arguments and opinions they were saying back when I came onto the scene 13 years ago, and yet they still talk like they're saying something new and intellectual every time.

Like, come back to the table to talk about feedism and fat fetishism when you are willing to NOT talk about feedism and fat fetishism and can instead sit there and listen and learn the way you would for any other experience or identity you don't have direct lived experience with.

Like, Tuvok has the nerve to basically tap Chakotay on the shoulder and go "Um? I hear you're going with B'Elanna's plan? That's not how it works. I, Tuvok, just made a suggestion and you're not following it which is really confusing to me. If JANEWAY were here-" and I do love him for it and I DON'T think he's lying. I think Janeway really does have a long history of listening to Tuvok over others, perhaps without even realizing it. Janeway & Tuvok together sound like hell in space, a literal nightmare, and I adore them for it. Janeway unintentionally strokes Tuvok's ego by letting him do whatever he thinks is best in any situation while Tuvok unintentionally feeds Janeway's self-image of what a glorious captain should be and I'm not saying Tuvok isn't smart or Janeway isn't a great captain [they objectively are these things] - I just really love this ouroboros they've got going on. They bring out the best in each other, they're so selfless, they'd sacrifice their life for the other, and also they're a little bit full of themselves in part because the other keeps feeding them, and I think that's beautiful✨

when I bring up the fact that it's weird that Edith can instantly read the text on Enola's trunk key in Crimson Peak, even though it's like three feet away from her on a table and she doesn't have her glasses on, I often get a response of "well, her vision's probably not THAT bad- she only needs them to read small print!"

au contraire, my friends. because Edith not wearing her glasses all the time doesn't mean her vision is mostly fine- it means that she lives in 1901

it was very common at the time to only wear glasses/spectacles when you absolutely had to, even if your vision impairment was more intense than just Reading Issues. indeed, Outlines of Practical Hygiene from 1894 recommends that "when the work is finished, for which glasses are needed, these should be taken off," and the Medical Times of 1901 said that, "Glasses help overworked or inadequate focusing muscles [seldom actually how near- or far-sightedness works, as I understand it] to overcome imperfections, but if overworn, they may help too much."

on the surface, this had to do with the above, mistaken belief that wearing them all the time would make your eyes even weaker- in practice, especially for women, it also had a lot to do with the preferred aesthetics of the time. glasses were not the fashionable look, generally speaking. while Edith would probably like to imagine herself above such petty concerns...I'd be willing to bet she's more swayed by them than she'd admit. after all, she didn't grow up in a vacuum of pure intellectualism

so, how bad IS her vision? well, she needs glasses to read the titles of the books in Alan's study fairly close-up. one might then argue that she's far-sighted, but she appears to be holding the newspaper with the article about Beatrice's death very close to her face to read it sans glasses

so therefore: I conclude that Edith is pretty seriously nearsighted, she only doesn't wear her glasses all the time because of then-conventional wisdom, and how the hell did she notice that damn key. filmmakers, don't write a myopic character and then forget she has vision issues!
