We do not speak for the whole department, in which there is a diversity of opinions, but feel the moment’s gravity requires us to speak forcefully about recent events at Columbia and the way forward. (2/16)
We are alarmed by Columbia University’s decision to call upon the NYPD to arrest its students on campus for their participation in the April 18 encampment protests, for the following reasons: (3/16)
First, reliable reports (as well as our own eyewitness impressions) are that the student encampment was not violent and did not threaten violence. (4/16)
As quoted in the Columbia Spectator, the NYPD Chief asserted that “the students that were arrested were peaceful, offered no resistance whatsoever, and were saying what they wanted to say in a peaceful manner.” (5/16)
While all universities must enforce their rules, they must also be wary of resorting to external police officers unless truly unusual circumstances demand it. We call on the University to seek a more prudent course of action going forward. (6/16)
Second, under the pretext of a “clear and present danger” the decision to call the police into campus violated the important principle of shared governance. (7/16)
The relevant Senate committee was not consulted, as required by university rules, but merely notified and the action proceeded despite the Senate committee objecting to it and advising against it. (8/16)
Third, the decision to call the police into campus violated also the important principle of protecting free expression on campus. Coupled with the testimony given by the President Shafik and members of the Board of Trustees in Congress, (9/16)
in which they failed to defend crucial values of academic freedom, the police action seems like capitulation to forces outside the university that would like to curtail academic freedom and freedom of expression. (10/16)
Finally, the suspensions of the arrested students seem to us irregular, unnecessary and resting on shaky legal ground. We call on the university to immediately reverse these suspensions and allow the affected students to return to their dorms and to their courses. (11/16)
For our own part, as members of the faculty of the department of sociology, we will continue to keep our courses open to these students, we will grade their exams and papers, and we will give them final grades in our courses so they may receive credit. (12/16)

Parasocial Interactions And Aggressive Personalities
In a search for an article that may challenge my beliefs about parasocial relationships, I found a peer-reviewed article about research that was conducted to see if more aggressive individuals identify and have parasocial interactions with aggressive television characters.
While this premise does not directly counter any of my existing beliefs on the matter, it certainly broadens my horizons because I haven't considered aggression in relation to PSIs (Parasocial Interactions). Therefore, I found it important to consider for my research.
In other words, by the end of reading it and chewing on it for awhile, I didn't get a new perspective. Rather, it gave me a different colored lens for my existing perception.
Photo from indianexpress.com.
The research article in question is titled Viewer Aggression and Homophily, Identificatiton, and Parasocial Relationships With Television Characters and was published in 2010 by Keren Eyal and Alan M. Rubin.
Eyal and Rubin's definitions of homophily, identification, and parasocial interactions (PSIs), are as follows:
"Homophily is the degree to which people who interact are similar in beliefs, education, social status, and the like. It can be objective or subjective."
From Hoffner's study (cited by Eyal and Rubin), "Identification refers to a viewer sharing a character’s perspective and vicariously participating in the character’s experiences when viewing."
From Horton and Wohl's study (cited by Eyal and Rubin), "Parasocial interaction (PSI) reflects media interaction and is a “seeming face-to-face relationship between spectator and performer. It is a relationship of friendship with a media personality based on felt affective ties with that persona."
This trio of definitions gives me vocabulary to describe some of what I already understand about PSRs. I wanted to say these are almost like a foundation but it's more like elements to a PSR.
We like people who are like our self. Someone in a PSR might have homophily with the character or person in question. Identification can go hand-in-hand with homophily. It might be easier to identify with a character or person who shares similar values and perspectives. PSI is simple. Anyone in a PSR will have interactions with the character or person in question.
Now, more about the article.
Eyal and Rubin's results indicated that:
Aggressive individuals identify more with aggressive characters.
Aggressive individuals are more likely to have PSIs with more aggressive characters.
Aggressive individuals may not necessarily form parasocial relationships with more aggressive characters.
Additionally, "Identification was the only concept of the three that was predicted by viewer’s own aggression beyond variance of gender." (Eyal & Rubin, 2010) In other words, if a person has aggressive tendencies then they are more likely to identify with a character regardless of their gender.
They could not definitively conclude why that was the case, but, as cited by the researchers and paraphrased by me, Cohen's idea is this; identification is seeing the world through the character's own eyes. It's first person. It's personal. Meanwhile, homophily is more of a third person perspective. I can see or my friends can see that I'm like someone but it's not direct. Gender matters less when it comes to values and first person perspective and matters more when comparing external factors.
An additional conclusion I'd like to explore later is that, "Men scored higher on all measures of the relationship with aggressive characters." (Eyal & Rubin, 2010) I have determined that this doesn't actually matter in my research. I'm exploring PSRs, not aggression and not gender differences.
This leaves me with some more things I want to look into.
Why weren't more aggressive individuals not more likely to form a PSR with aggressive characters? Is this a personality thing or is it just not common to form PSRs?
Maybe it was an experimental factor. PSRs seem to be formed with characters people seek out on their own. Perhaps this setting isn't fit for forming PSRs.
That makes me wonder, what brings someone to form a PSR in the first place? Why would one person be more or less likely than another?
Much to think about.

TitanTrade Binary Options Scam Exposed
According to our sources, the network of scammers around TitanTrade and Guy Galboiz is even more sinister than the Yukom Enterprise binary options operation, of whom Lee Elbaz, Yossi Herzog, and Kobi Cohen are currently facing charges in the United States. In actuality, it has grown even larger, involving more brands, and it has conned ordinary investors on every continent.
NRGbinary was replaced by TitanTrade, a binary options platform, according to a 2016 special report by Reuters. Guy Galboiz, an Israeli, was the organiser of both binary options systems. In 2013, Guy Galboiz served as a director of NRG Capital Limited, a UK-based company. In 2014, the business was dissolved. Since then, frontmen, nominee directors, and trustees have managed Galboiz’s businesses. Between 2013 and 2017, Galboiz operated a global binary options scam that lured tens of millions of ordinary investors.
Galboiz is also connected to other significant binary options frauds including AlfaCapitals, PWRtrade, ICoption, and AlgoCapitals. He is among the most formidable assailants of the binary options era. This is our report.
Northwestern Management Services Limited is the power source.
Northwestern Management Services Limited (NWMS) and its employees launched Guy Galboiz’s TitanTrade and the related broker scams. They supplied the required nominee directors, including Genevieve Magnan and Vanessa Payet, as well as trustees. From numerous previous Israeli binary options and broker scams, we are familiar with NWMS.
Associated Entities
In keeping with the standard pattern of a broker scam, TitanTrade’s website has been linked to numerous entities:
GTech Media Development Ltd (Israel)
NRG Capital Limited (UK
Ultra Solutions MG Limited (Dominica)
Ultra Solutions MG (UK) Ltd (UK)
Titan Trade Solutions Limited (UK)
Titan Trade Capital Limited (Australia)
GN Capital Limited (Marshall Islands)
Primero Capital Solutions Limited (Anguilla)
One Tech Media Limited (Seychelles)
DOM Technology Services Limited (UK)
MHGG Tech Solutions Limited (UK)
Alfa Capital Limited (UK)
Technozone Solutions Ltd (Belize)
The TitanTrade scheme set up a different entity to handle client-victim payments for its Australian business:
Allianz Metro Pty Ltd,
Transcomm Global Pty Ltd,
Sansen Pty Ltd, or
IMC Holdings Pty Ltd
Beneficial Owners
The same “set of perpetrators” and their entities consistently run TitanTrade, NRGbinary or ICoption, as well as a variety of front firms, according to investigations conducted by authorities in several jurisdictions. These businesses are as follows:
MIG G.A. Marketing Finance Ltd (now GTech Media Development Ltd),
Ultra Solutions MG Ltd and its subsidiary
Ultra Solutions MG /UK) Ltd and
Primero Capital Solutions Ltd.
The documentation that we have access to shows that these businesses are under the direction of the two individuals.
Guy Galboiz and
Stefan Trasca.
A written statement from Eyal Nachum, who was involved in some of the binary options frauds described via his payment service businesses Payotech Ltd, Pay o Bin Ltd, and Moneta International UAB, verified the beneficial ownership and/or control over the schemes.
Eyal Nachum of Payobin confirmed Guy Galboiz involvement in binary options scheme operators
Involved People
The TitanTrade plan took an aggressive global strategy. Attacks against retail investors have been reported in Europe, North America, and Australia, with attacks beginning in Israel. The Australian branch is especially significant. The main actors are as follows:
Galboiz Guy (Israel)
Trasca Stefan (Romania)
Israel, Australia: Yoav Ida
Eustace Senese, aka Tony, from Australia
Sandy Senese, an Aussie
Aussie Cameron Senese
Guy Galboiz in Israel and his Romanian associate Stefan Trasca in Romania oversaw the boiler rooms. The Israeli company MIG G.A. Marketing Finance Ltd. (MigFin) operated the boiler rooms for NRGbinary, TitanTrade, ICoption, and other schemes, as Reuters accurately reports in its 2016 article.
Cameron Senese, his wife Sandy Senese, and Eustace “Tony” Senese oversaw TitanTrade’s operations in Australia. In essence, they oversaw Australia’s payment flow infrastructure. Numerous businesses, including Allianz Metro Pty Ltd, Transcomm Global Pty Ltd, Sansen Pty Ltd, and IMC Holdings Pty Ltd, were run for this reason.
Tony Senese, an Australian citizen, was already given a seven-year prison sentence in 2002 for embezzling investor cash from the bankrupt financial services company EC Consolidated Capital.
Our information indicates that Yoav Ida served as the Australia-Israel liaison officer. The businessman, who was born in 1959, oversaw the Senese family’s operations related to TitanTrade.
The Australian Proceedings
The Australian regulatory body ASIC has been actively pursuing TitanTrade since August 2016. A lawsuit was filed against the owners of TradeTTN and TitanTrade in November 2017 following many warnings issued in 2016 and a court decision that forbade TitanTrade from carrying on with business as usual.
The Senese family’s assets and bank accounts were successfully frozen by ASIC. ASIC successfully prosecuted Tony Senese, his son Cameron, and Transcomm Global Pty Ltd for contempt of court in July 2018. Despite the mandated hold on TitanTrade’s cash, the Seneses had repeatedly embezzled money. In October 2018, the court imposed penalties totaling $80,000.
