Safety

Oneshot – (FFN) (AO3)

Summary:

Nightmares crop up when you least expect them, built from your oldest fears. No one knew that fact better than Cole, for even though the apocalypse had been stopped, it wasn't forgotten. The sickening feeling of corruption was cold, Cole's old desperation was fierce– he needed to be free!

Cole opened his eyes.

Every one of his senses was bombarded with rumbling, falling dust, rubble, danger. It was utter chaos. The earth was shaking below his feet, shaking tall buildings around him, destabilizing foundations, rending cracks in the street. Everywhere he looked, Ninjago City was falling apart.

He looked around. People were screaming, running, wailing. Crying. Dying. Falling. Worse than the Devourer's attack. How was this happening?

In the corner of his vision, something moved. He turned to look. A figure was emerging from the cracks– no, chasms– in the road. Except there was more than one. They approached him, baring their obsidian teeth, laughing evilly. Red eyes shining, armor and weapons of indestructible stone. The signs of the apocalypse.

Cole turned to look behind himself, only to catch sight of the Celestial Clock turning and glinting. Impossible– he was in the city, not the island!

Fear coursed through him as he looked back to the warrior. There was an army of them, on the highest cliff Cole had ever seen, taller than the Mountains of Madness, than his father's standards. No way down, no way to safety, no way to fight. Only their swords and teeth, only them and the Clock. Where were his brothers?!

Desperation clawed at Cole's throat. He didn't want to die yet! This wasn't what was supposed to happen!

He turned to run, but found himself instead running up, up, up the slope around the tower in central Ninjago City. Higher, higher, he had to go higher. To the Overlord, to the evil, to protect Lloyd– Lloyd, who would fight alone, who would die without his help. He struggled to put one foot after another, pushed himself to keep running, panted for breath as his lungs were screaming. His body was lead. At any moment, the Warriors would catch him, poison him, corrupt him with the dark matter. He couldn't escape.

Cole's chest ached. He stumbled. He fell on his hands, scraping them painfully, raw broken skin yielding fresh red blood.

Before he could stand again, something sickening and cold hit his back. It spread through him, slimy and evil. This was it. There was no way to escape. He'd been hit. There was no hope.

He had to fight! He couldn't fall! There was no hope left!

The coldness soaked into his limbs. His heart pounded. His blood flowed black. What was this sickening control… no! No, no, no!

Cole woke with a shout, breathing heavily, head spinning, eyes wide, having bolted upright.

For a moment, he sat in complete disorientation, only knowing he had to be free. Half-thought nightmares filled his mind, twisting his fears. The stone warriors were going to drive him back, off the cliff, to fall. The dark matter would consume him, overcome his will, make him hurt his brothers. He couldn't let it happen!

Cole was so, so hot. He'd thought he was cold, like the matter, but no. He was burning alive. In an effort cool down, he desperately tugged off his shirt. Cool night air hit his skin, cutting through the heat, freezing his sweat, but not enough to help– he couldn't think. He had to run. He had to get away. His hands- there was no blood, no pain, but they were just hurt. What had happened to his hands?

It took a few minutes, but Cole's mind eventually settled, coming to terms with reality. It was only a dream– one he'd had many times, always the same, when the defeat of the Overlord had been fresh. He'd thought he was free of them. He hadn't had nightmares like that in years, since he had them nightly. It had been so long.

He covered his face with a hand, pinching his temples, trying to dispel it. The dream was just bad memories. He'd be okay. Everyone was okay. He'd recovered, the city was safe. He repeated that mantra, but it didn't seem to help much.

As he slowly calmed, a quiet stirring next to him drew his attention, and he looked to its source.

In the faint moonlight, Cole could just barely see Vania, sleeping next to him. Her wedding ring glinted in the pale light from where it rested on her finger, just barely visible. It was a reminder of how far they had come together, from acquaintances to friends to lovers. Even over a year after tying the knot, he still sometimes couldn't believe she'd ever wanted him, but he didn't complain. It wasn't as if he was worried about that after his nightmare, despite how long ago the nightmare's memories were. In the back of his mind, he hoped he hadn't awakened her, though she didn't seem to stir.

He sighed heavily. The dread and fear were too present; he wouldn't be sleeping again for a long time. He wouldn't be able to sleep until the memories faded, but that would take a long time… Even so, there was nothing to be done about it, except to get comfortable for a long night of thinking. Cole pushed himself up so he could lean against the headboard of the bed. As he did so, however, his hand slipped out from under him on the silky sheets, and he fell heavily to one elbow.

Cole froze. Silently, he cursed the slippery sheets. Then he watched as Vania stirred again, this time slowly waking, only just managing to get into a better position as she sleepily opened her eyes.

"...Cole?" she murmured.

"Hey, Vania," he responded quietly.

She rubbed her eyes and pushed herself up so she could see him, blinking sleep away. "What's wrong? Why are you awake?"

He shook his head dismissively. "Nothing's wrong. Sorry to wake you."

She yawned, blinking blearily, and focused on him and how disoriented he looked. "It doesn't look like nothing." She sat up properly, looking him over, gauging his emotions. "Was it a nightmare?"

He nodded, not awake enough to brush away her concerns, but knowing he couldn't just deny it. "It's just bad memories. I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" She put a hand on his shoulder, rubbing it distractingly, drawing his attention. Her ring was cold to the touch. "Do you want to talk about it?"

He leaned into the gentle stroking. "You don't want to hear about that stuff."

"Yes I do. I wouldn't ask if I didn't." She let her nails lightly scratch against his skin, adding to the distraction. "Besides, you really don't look like you're okay. I want to help."

He smiled weakly. It took a moment for him to find the words in his half-asleep state. How could he tell her about what he'd seen? How old the memories were, and yet they still seemed to haunt him? It has been years, and yet he couldn't forget.

"...I had a dream about the Stone Army," he finally whispered, hoping she'd know. The people of Shintaro knew all about Ninjago, after all; the near end of the world wasn't exactly something under wraps.

To his relief, his wife seemed to understand. "What about them?" Vania asked with a little yawn.

He sighed shakily. "The city being destroyed, the stone warriors, the dark island…" He shuddered. "Getting hit by the dark matter."

Vania let her hand fall to his arm, leaning her head on his shoulder instead. "It was bad, wasn't it?"

"Yeah. It… it was awful." He closed his eyes, letting his head rest against hers. "I haven't had a dream like that in years."

"Did you used to?"

"Every night. Then the Nindroids came around and I had new things to worry about."

"Oh..." She hugged him, gentle and tired. "Thank goodness it's all in the past, right? You don't have to worry about that anymore."

"Yeah, they're not coming back. No one's getting hurt." He hugged her back, with relief slowly replacing his beleaguered feelings. "I'm not gonna hurt anyone because I wasn't careful anymore."

"The worries of a leader," she said with a smile.

"They were pretty real at the time," he murmured. "Everything could go wrong, prophecy or no. Just a bit of dark matter hitting Lloyd would be all it had taken. Then we were pretty much done for."

"Yet you weren't. You survived. Ninjago is safe thanks to you."

"Survival isn't everything." He sighed. "I'm so glad it's over."

Vania reached up and ran her fingers through his hair, gently combing it. "Do you miss protecting Ninjago?"

"Kind of." He felt the tangles catch on her fingers and come apart, soothing him. "I… I don't miss the danger. The constant fighting, feeling like someone was going to die if I didn't pay close enough attention."

"Well, that's over now," she said with a smile. "I don't miss it either, really. I hated not knowing if you were okay. You'd tell me you had a mission or a battle or something, and then I wouldn't hear from you for a week or two. I worried all the time." She paused on a particularly stubborn tangle, gently tugging to make it come out, his soft hair brushing against her fingers. "Even when you visited, I was still sometimes worried."

He smiled as the knot came away under her careful touch. "At least we're here now."

"Hmph, finally. Took long enough."

He laughed and embraced her, more of a nuzzle than anything else. "Yeah. Long enough, all right."

She giggled, kissing him on the forehead. "Hey, no moving yet. I'm not done!"

"Sorry," he mumbled.

She smiled and messed with his hair a bit. "Seriously though, we kept getting distracted. I was sometimes a bit convinced we would never actually make it, or that something unfixable would happen…"

"Hey, I wasn't going to let anything ruin it for us. I'm glad we made it."

"Me too. It was worth it."

He smiled as she smoothed down his hair. "The happiest day of my life. It was exhausting, but so worth it."

"Except for all those things they forgot to tell us we had to do right before." She chuckled. "We were so tired when we finally got to bed."

"Honestly, that was unfair. They should've told us."

"Very unfair." She leaned her chin on his shoulder again. "We should have snuck away and spent some us time."

"Oh yeah, we should've." He put an arm around her waist. "We get some now, at least."

"Mhm, at some crazy time at night when every normal person is sleeping. I guess you only live once."

"Better to spend it with people you love." He kissed her temple, yawning deeply afterward.

She tapped his nose with a smile. "Someone's tired again."

He smiled. "Hey, you know that thing with my hair always works."

She grinned mischievously. "Do I now? That's an interesting idea."

"Vania..." he whined.

"Cole..." she mimicked.

He grumbled and pulled her close to him. "You're mean."

She snuggled against him, listening to his heart beat. "Don't be a grump, it doesn't suit you."

He frowned. "I'll be a grump if I want, my wife's picking on me." As he said it, he laid back down, pulling her down with him into the soft mattress.

She giggled as they laid there, still holding each other. "Just be quiet and give me a kiss, Cole."

"Ordering me around, too! So entitled."

"Guess I'm just used to people doing what I tell them," she said with a grin.

He snorted. "Even I do what you say, that's not a surprise."

"You're not right now," she retorted.

"Sure I am." He pulled her closer and kissed her softly. She hummed happily, returning the kiss and snuggling closer. When he drew away, it was with a smile as he put his chin on top of her head, slinging an arm over her side to keep her close. "I love you, Vania."

She smiled and snuggled closer. "I love you too, Cole." She propped herself up to give him another gentle kiss. "Get some sleep."

"I will. You too, okay?"

She nodded and laid down again, resting her head against his chest. Cole smiled as he heard her breathing even out, sleep making it slow and rhythmic.

As Vania's gentle breathing filled in the background sound of their bedroom, Cole sighed. His nightmare was just that- a nightmare. It wasn't real, and he'd never have to live through it again. He was safe. Everyone was.

Before too long, Cole found his eyelids drooping. As he closed his eyes, he nestled his nose in Vania's sweet-smelling hair. The fragrance of jasmine and lavender made him smile- Vania always did love her flowers.

It didn't take him much longer to relax. Eventually, he fell asleep too, holding Vania's petite frame close to himself. For once, everyone was safe, and he could rest. There was no war, no enemy, no danger. It was just him and Vania, sleeping, with the world at peace.

Happy Friday the 13th! If your OCs were in a piece of horror media (video game/book/movie), what roles would they play? Who would die first? Who would make it to the end? What kind of horror media would they be in? (slasher film, psychological horror, zombie apocalypse, etc.)

RIP i'm answering this late, but it's still spooky season so it's fine :') i actually put a lot of thought into how everyone would fit into horror tropes when i was making the until dawn AU and the zombie apocalypse AU i've been cooking in my brain for like 5 years lmao. as the horror genre has evolved, tropes keep getting subverted or parodied, so they're less defined (which is a good thing imo) but these were my thoughts:

ASA: weird kid who says unsettling things which no one wants to believe. because of him, no one is sure if the genre is psychological thriller (all in his head) or supernatural horror, until everything is revealed at the end and they find out he was right all along. he has the strongest connection to the paranormal and is scared the least often. (ex: cole sear from the sixth sense)

STEVIE: positioned as the fool / comic relief, but she quickly gets wrapped up in the horror elements because she's always down to do something spooky for the bit (until it's not a bit anymore). her true personality only comes out when her life is on the line and she can no longer hide behind jokes. she'll scrape through til the end, but she'll never really be the same. (ex: richie tozier from it)

ELAINE: simultaneously filling the role of "the virgin" and "the whore", elaine is the first to be killed or injured, the catalyst for action, the turning point. she'll probably die in some sort of dramatic irony, where the audience knows she's doomed, but elaine remains naive and optimistic until the bitter end. she never deserved what happened to her, but people online will continue to debate her morality for years and years, because as we all know... teenage girls are irredeemably evil. (ex: jackie taylor from yellowjackets or nancy wheeler from stranger things)

JADA: underestimated and overshadowed by the rest of the cast in the beginning, she stays out of the action for the longest period of time before eventually getting roped in. but once she's in it, she's IN IT. she's the unlikely final girl, willing to do absolutely anything to survive. she turns into someone (or something...) she never wanted to become. (ex: needy lesnicki from jennifer's body)

FINN: he's been living in a horror movie for as long as he can remember, so when shit starts going down, he should be able to keep a cool head, right? except his weak spots are easier to find than he would like to admit. his unstable emotions make him easy to manipulate, but hard to control, while his survival skills and fighting ability make him the first person you would want to come to your defense in a horror movie. (ex: dean winchester from supernatural)

---What is InFAMOUS: No Man's Land?---

InFAMOUS: No Man's Land started out as a simple one-shot of a what if that took root and grew.

The story follows the journey of Cole MacGrath a couple of years after the Evil Ending of InFAMOUS 2. Years of having the burden of being the "messiah" and dealing with the hardships that came with it, Cole finally has enough. He breaks away from the army he reared and takes off into the Wildlands of the Great Plains, where new opportunities await for the Demon of Empire City to claim.

Crystals

Chapter one

Kai woke up suddenly, confused. *What the?* He looked around, suddenly realizing where he was. “Oh crap!” He scrambled out of his vehicle and onto the ground. “Cole!”

He banged on the glass of Cole’s vehicle, but the black ninja didn’t respond. He tried to lift the top, but failed. *Shit shit shit.*

He glanced around nervously, and to his luck, there were no Vengestone Warriors. Kai tried again to open the top of Cole’s vehicle, and this time, he succeeded.

“Cole!” “Wha?” Cole’s eyes flickered open — no, /eye/.

“WHAT THE FUCK?!” Kai fell backwards, absolutely terrified. Cole’s left eye had been completely covered by crystal shards. How had Kai not seen it before? He pulled himself back up to the vehicle, staring in shock and horror at his friend.

Not only had the crystals taken over Cole’s eye, but they were protruding from his head and shoulders. Kai shuddered. He reached in, pulling Cole out of the vehicle, making sure not to touch the crystals.

“Cole? Can you hear me?” He shook him gently. “Are you okay?” *Please don’t say you’re an evil crystal zombie now, please don’t.* Cole’s eye flickered open once again. “K-Kai? What happened? Did we win?” Kai sighed with relief.

“You’re okay.” The black ninja narrowed his eye. “What do you mean ‘you’re okay’, why wouldn’t I be okay?” He was becoming annoyed now. “I wake up after crashing, and you don’t even bother telling me what the hell happened?!” Kai shrunk back. *The fuck?* Cole being angry wasn’t anything new, but this? What the /hell/ was this?

Kai took a step back away from who he thought was his friend. “What’s wrong with you?” He retorted, defending himself. “Why are you so upset? I just saved you!” Cole bared his teeth at him. “Sure you did, you’re always trying to be the best, huh?”

Kai frowned. “That was years ago, Cole! I thought you guys were over that.” Now he was /really/ getting worried. “I don’t think you’re okay.” “OKAY?!” Cole growled. “When has ANYTHING been okay?” He looked around. “Where’s Jay?” Kai definitely wasn’t expecting the question. “Um, I don’t know? I honestly wasn’t expecting you to care. . . .”

“Why wouldn’t I?” *Why is Cole acting so out of character?* Then Kai realized. *No, he’s not being out of character, he’s being /exaggerated/.* “I think we should take you to PIXAL.” Kai told him. “She’d probably know what to do about,” he gestured to his face, “you know.”

Cole narrowed his eyes. Instead of answering, he knelt down to Kai’s level, staring into his eyes. Kai stared back, frozen in place by that ghostly gaze. Even if he couldn’t see his left eye, the eye that held that ghostly purple orb, Cole’s gaze was terrifying.

His eye turned ghostly green, which Kai expected, but wasn’t ready for. /no one/ would ever be ready for it. Green was usually associated with Lloyd, Kai’s beloved little brother. But this - this green was associated with /death/.

Kai shook himself. *Not know, Kai. We’re in the middle of another apocalypse.* He glanced around, and realized Cole had left. “Oh god dammit.”

So uh... I haven't really been on here in *checks watch* about two months. However, it appears that time doesn't stop in my absence (very surprising!), so I'm taking this opportunity to do some memes I was tagged in in the interim. Not sure I tracked all of them down, but thanks to at least @thestarsarecool, @boshemians, and @skylikeaflame for tagging me in one or more of the memes under the cut. I'm going to not tag anyone in Beatles fandom since I assume these have circulated more than enough times, but for the sake of cross-fandom-pollination, if @deliciouskeys or @laurieodell wants to do any of these, feel free. Or don't. Anyway.

"things to get to know me" game

Last song I listened to: What Goes Around... / ...Comes Around - Justin Timberlake. Yes he's evil but... come on, we're in Beatles fandom.

Favorite color: I don't really enjoy wearing it or even really looking at it, but my instinctive answer is always red.

Currently watching: The last series I started was Gen V, which is a spinoff of The Boys. It's alright-- if anyone's familiar with The Boys, the feel is more similar to the Starlight storyline than anything else in there, with some added teen drama mystery vibes.

Last movie I watched: Apocalypse Now. War movies aren't exactly my thing, though it's been on my to-watch list for a long time because of Marlon Brando. I also do have a maybe irrational appreciation for anything anti-Vietnam because of how into that movement the Beatles were-- even Paul had to admit that John's anti-war songs maybe slightly had a hint of a point from that angle! I also watched Tár a couple days ago, which I astutely noticed is actually pretty good.

Currently reading: ... :). The book I technically have open is The City and The Pillar by Gore Vidal, but I can't honestly say I'm reading it. Soon!

Sweet/Spicy/Savory: Secret fourth option: sour.

Last thing I googled: Well, I just looked up to see if The City and The Pillar had a film adaptation (motivation to actually finish), and while it doesn't, Wikipedia did inform me that the book itself appears in a movie called Dino at the Beach. Unfortunately, it's Dino as in Bernardino, not as in dinosaur. Very sad.

Current Obsession: Obviously the Beatles, though it's been waning a bit. I'll also say that I recently watched the Adventure Time spinoff Fionna and Cake (partly prompted by seeing you reblog posts about it, Maya! Though that one fanart where Simon Petrikov says he's starting to look like John Lennon was incredibly disturbing to me personally) and I've been thinking about that still on probably a daily basis since.

Current Thing I'm Working On: Myself :). Just kidding, actually the opposite. Actively destroying my psyche by going into John Lennon mode and writing mpreg.

FTF: Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny

This Week...

inFAMOUS 2 Cole MacGrath Battle Royale!

Conditions:

Good Cole vs Evil Cole vs Festival of Blood Cole. No RFI or Beast Powers.

Scenario:

After setting off the RFI, Good Cole gets Isekai'd to an alternate universe, where he's confronted by his evil timeline counterpart. Evil Cole quickly determines that Good Cole fought the Beast in his timeline and would be liable to try and stop him in this one. As the two engage, however, the RFI's residual energy sends the two into a third timeline, landing them directly in front of Vampire Cole as he's feeding of a civilian. This prompts Good Cole to try and intervene, causing a free for all between them all.

Analysis: Good Cole

Many years in the future, human civilization would meet its grim end at the hands of a monster known only as The Beast. Humanity’s last survivor, a man calling himself Kessler, would use his fantastical powers to travel back in time and prevent the apocalypse. Taking over a secret society called the First Sons, Kessler would use their research to amplify the powers of Conduits, humans with special powers, with an explosive device called the Ray Sphere. Setting the Ray Sphere in the middle of Empire City, one man would survive it’s blast and go one to become the world’s savior. The name of that survivor, of the man who would slay The Beast, is Cole MacGrath.

Even before awakening his extraordinary powers, Cole MacGrath was an impressive young man. A parkour prodigy, Cole has the streets, rooftops, and sewer systems of both Empire City and New Marias memorized like the back of his hand, even capable of outrunning police with his skills. He was an incredibly intelligent man as well, smart enough that his parents can easily pass him off as a teacher. He was a straight-A student during his four years of college prep, only dropping out when one of his professors began tormenting his friend Zeke. But, after the blast, he became something more…

Now gifted with extraordinary electric abilities, Cole became a living battery, capable of absorbing and manipulating electricity to an extraordinary degree. With his newfound powers, he can create a wide variety of bolts, missiles, grenades, and blades out of his electric powers, ranging from homing missiles to sticky grenades. He can also create Arc Restraints, electric chains designed to pin his opponents down.

In regards to his defensive abilities, Cole has a huge moveset to draw from. He can create shields that convert bullets into energy for him to absorb, glide through the air and telekinetically throw heavy objects by manipulating magnetism, regenerate from being riddled with projectiles, can fully heal himself and restore his stamina by absorbing electricity, and even restart his heart to come back from the dead.

This wide variety of powers is only scratching the surface of what Cole can do, which comes as a result of how his powers work. See, Cole can develop new powers in a wide variety of ways, such as by absorbing large quantities of energy, or even just by using his powers in creative ways during a fight. Throw these methods, he has developed and mastered both the above powers as well as the following ones. He can:

Create thunderstorms.

Throw tornados.

Drain electricity from storms.

Absorb ions from killed opponents to enhance his powers.

Amplify his speed immensely via Precision, causing foes who were previously only a blur in his view to move in slow motion.

Give himself unlimited energy and stamina briefly via Karmic Overload.

Heal crippling wounds with his healing pulse, an electric zap that amplifies the body’s natural healing abilities.

Can see visions upon getting new powers, teaching him how to use them.

Can see how a person was killed by touching their corpse, as well as see a path leading to their killer.

And suck the bio-electricity from a person’s body with bio-leech, a technique that requires he grip their face.

Can create electric grappling hooks.

And many, many more.

Of particular note is his Radar Sense, a sixth sense that operates independently of his other senses in an omnidirectional way, allowing him to see electrical sources, people included, as well as outline those with hostile intent towards him in red.

Keep in mind, these are all just his electricity powers. Upon reaching New Marias, Cole was able to use a device to transfer some of Lucy Kuo’s powers into himself, after which he gains additional ice based powers, allowing him to create ice missile, ice grenades, and ice spikes roughly the size of buildings, even using his ice powers to launch him skyward to create distance from his opponent.

Speaking of distance, he’s probably going to need it, as he isn’t a great melee fighter. He’s a skilled user of the Amp, yes, and he can hurt people as strong as he is, but he lacks any kind of martial arts training. Cole is a ranged fighter through and through. Thankfully, Cole has a wide variety of resistances to aide him against anyone who manages to get in close. Cole has repeatedly shrugged off ice and fire attacks, taking no damage when getting ragdolled by The Beast, who is a giant monster made of magma. He has successfully endured Sasha’s mind control, which was powerful enough to take control of all of Empire City even while weakened. He has survived being doused with acids and resisted being ripped apart by The Beast’s Black Holes, which break down and absorb matter on an atomic level. He, like all Conduits, are resistant to most forms of radiation and all forms of disease, including the Plague that would’ve wiped out the human race had it not been stopped. His powers can even ignore the resistances of others, such as where Cole killed Kessler and David Warner, two people who can absorb electricity on contact, with his electric attacks.

Even with all this though, he does have one major weakness: water. Large quantities of water will short circuit is body, killing him in a way he likely can't resurrect from. Even standing in neck deep water for 30 seconds will kill him, being able to withstand being drenched only for brief periods of time. Furthermore, cutting out the electricity in the areas around him will make him nauseous and give him a headache and he can’t touch most electronics or fire arms without making them explode.

Overall, Cole is a remarkably powerful master of electrokinesis and he’s remembered as one of the most powerful Conduits of all time for good reason. Respect the Patron Saint of Empire City.

Analysis: Evil Cole

What does it mean to save mankind?

Ever since Cole MacGrath awakened his amazing and horrifying powers, he has grappled with this question. Once upon a time, Cole was just an ordinary bike courier, of no real note to anyone. But, upon being tasked to deliver the mysterious Ray Sphere to a man named Kessler, this all changed dramatically. Awakening in a crater with incredible new powers, Cole became hated and feared for having supposedly caused the blast that destroyed Empire City. His girlfriend left him in horror and disgust and people on street banded together to attack him in droves. The whole city turned against him, gangsters, terrorists, and friends included, and eventually Cole decided he'd had enough.

If everyone was going to treat him like a demon, Cole would become one.

Notch by notch, Cole tore down Empire City. He eliminated the gangsters and terrorists who threatened him with ruthless efficiency and terrorized the people into submission. Cole got revenge on the mysterious man named Kessler for ruining his life, killing his girlfriend, and turning the whole city against him. It was only then that Kessler revealed the truth. Kessler had meant to turn Cole into a hero. Into someone who could save mankind from a monster known only as tge Beast.

Cole laughed at the idea.

Determined to destroy The Beast so he can gain more power and eliminate a threat, Cole ventured to and conquered New Marias, descimaring the Militia put together to stop him. It was only there that The Beast communicated with him and revealed his true intentions. A plague was decimating humanity and only those with superpowers could survive it. And The Beast wanted Cole to carry on his fight.

Cole accepted his offer and, feeling remorse for the last time in his life, murdered what was left of his friends so that no one could stop him. Cole will always tell himself it was to save humanity. But, one look at his conquest of the planet would show show you, it was only so he could save himself.

This version of Cole MacGrath is the most powerful Conduit in the franchise, second only to the Beast from Kessler's timeline. As such, he has access to a huge variety of horrifying abilities with which he can decimate entire armies.

Cole is one of the most versatile electricity wielders in fiction and he only grows more versatile with time. Thanks to his ability to create new powers when using his powers in specific ways, Cole can continually expand his moveset even mid-combat. He can shoot out a variety of lightning bolts, many of which are designed to arc between targets and hit as many people as possible. He can create grenades and missiles out of kinetic energy, ranging from a hellish barrage of homing missiles to grenades that explode into even more grenades. He can levitate long distances by manipulating magnetism and can do the same as a form of telekinesis. He can even create tornados and lightning storms to toss at the enemy, though he needs to replenish these with ions absorbed from fallen foes. His most dangerous electrical ability, however, is his Ionic Drain.

With this technique, Cole need only pose dramatically to suck the bio-electricity out of anyone near him in a several foot radius, capable of killing hundreds of foes without ever having to touch them.

Cole also possesses advanced napalm powers, gifted to him by Nix, which he can use to boost his flight, summon monsters, entrap targets, or just give his powers a little extra explosive kick.

Cole shares numerous powers with his canonical Good Karma counterpart, including:

Self Resurrection so long as his heart in intact.

Advanced healing, to the point of regenrating from being riddled with projectiles.

Blasts that can deflect missiles.

Speed Amps that increase his speed to the point where people who previously appeared as only a blur to him moved in slow motion.

Radar Sense, an omnidirectional sixth sense which works independently of Cole's other senses, allowing his to detect all sources of electricity nearby, including people. It also allows him to see skeletons, determine if someone is ill, and detect who has hostile intent towards him.

Can create weapons out of electricity.

Can create shields that convert bullets into energy.

Can see the last moments of freshly killed people by touching their corpse, which creates an echo of the killer that Cole can then follow in order to locate them.

Based on the above, it's clear to see that Cole MacGrath is a one man apocalypse, even before accounting for how strong he actually physically is. Even before being granted the Beast's powers, Cole's could equally match and surpass him. This is impressive when considering the Beast created a 1.8 gigaton storm just by waking up and effortlessly obliterated a city not long afterwards.

In terms of speed, Cole could, without amps, dodge a beam of radiation from the RFI, putting his reactions and movement times at nearly 50% the speed of light.

Speaking of the RFI, it is one of Cole's only remaining weaknesses. Given that it nullifies his powers, it is capable of bypassing both his regeneration and resurrection, and a full blast from the thing would kill him and every other Conduit on Earth. With this in mind, however, Cole could take more punishment from the RFI than The Beast could and may potentially develop a resistance to it with enough exposure given his powers. However, this remains hypothetical, as Cole destroyed the RFI.

Cole MacGrath is the man who, in the span of months, became powerful enough to conquer the Earth. Beware the Demon of Empire City and fear the Beast of New Marias.

Analysis: Vampire Cole

You've seen Cole be the hero and you've seen Cole play the villain. Now, what happens when he isn't even human at all?

In this non-canon what if story (made up on the spot by Zeke as he tries to seduce a woman at a bar), a heroic version of Cole MacGrath investigates the catacombs beneath the New Marias church, hoping to find people who have gone missing. Whilst down there, he gets ambushed by vampires and dragged before the corpse of the notorious Bloody Mary. Her emancipated body is reinvigorated as she feeds upon his blood, turning Cole into her thrall as she bites into his neck.

This newly vampirized Cole now has one goal, to slay Bloody Mary before the sun comes up, or be turned into her slave forever.

This Cole has all the electrical powers that his other two counterparts have, though he notably lacks any specific fire or ice abilities. Instead, he has a new suite of vampire powers. Namely, Cole can transform into a swarm of bats to fly around the city at his leisure, giving him complete control in the skies. Furthermore, it also provides a direct upgrade to his senses, giving him another sixth sense that can see through vampiric illusions. In fact, he can even use it to detect shapeshifted vampires hidden in a crowd and see invisible objects. His vampiric senses are so good, that he can track vampires all the way from the other end of the city by scent alone.

Having said that, these abilities exhaust his stamina in such a way that he cannot replenish their use just by reabsorbing electricity. Rather, in order to fuel his vampire powers, he needs to drink a person's blood. Unfortunately for Cole's moral compass, there is no non lethal way to do this. He will be driven to drink every drop of blood in a person's body every time he tries no matter what. His vampiric instincts are simply too strong.

That kinda leads into this version of Cole's biggest weakness. Thanks to being Bloody Mary's thrall, he's susceptible to her influence despite his normally high levels of mental resistance. As such, he would need something special to bring her down.

Enter Cole's new melee weapon, The Barbed Cross. Made by a legendary vampire hunter and blessed by God himself, this legendary weapon is flat out untouchable for full vampires. Luckily, Cole isn't one yet, meaning he can use it to flat out vaporize most vampires in a single hit with ease. On fact, it's his only way of killing some vampires. Just a single drop of blood is enough to regenerate vampires from being nothing but bare skeletons and Cole can presumably do much the same, assuming he isn't killed by a holy weapon or the sun.

Alas, Cole only has these powers for a single night. Upon defeating Bloody Mary, Cole is back to his usual heroic self, blue lightning and all.

While these three characters have a lot to throw at each other, that is counterbalanced by the fact that they have the exact same powers to throw at each other. Every Cole has the same general electric powers and resistances and they all share the same stats. While Good Cole's may be more percise and Evil Cole's more widespread and devastating, the general moveset is mostly the same. Specific electrical powers, like Giga Drain, are counterbalanced by each Cole having resistances to that sort of power drain. Meaning this comes down to their other abilities.

In this area, Vampire Cole comes up dead last. His powers aren't well suited for fighting his counterparts, as neither Cole is particularly known to turn invisible or create illusions, meaning that his powers are more or less dead weight. In fact, the Barbed Cross, as powerful as it is, isn't a benefit here as Vampire Cole isn't fighting vampires. Combine that with the fact that he's working within a time limit and Vampire Cole is pretty solidly the first man out.

So, it comes down to Napalm vs Ice. Evil Cole's ability to summon minions is of minimal help here, as both Coles are strong enough to blast through them and they'd have to be divided between two opponents. Good Cole has the better aerial mobility against Evil Cole with his ice jump grappling hook beating out EC's midair dash, though Vamp Cole outclasses both with his actual flight.

Honestly... I can't think of any real way to determine a victor between the two of them. They should all be able to hurt each other fine with their electricity, as they can all hurt people who otherwise absorb electricity, but they both have so many similarities there that that doesn't change anything. Both have a handful of specific advantages, Evil Cole is harder to dodge while Good Cole can better hit specific weaknesses. Ironically, Vampire Cole is the only one here with a real win condition, but that would require him getting close enough to bite either Cole and that's not gonna happen when all three are ranged fighters and are just as skilled as each other.

Other versions of Good Cole vs Evil Cole have enough specific variables to them to determine a winner. IF 1 Evil Cole is canonically twice as strong as IF 1 Good Cole, so he'd win. RFI Cole is weaponizing Beast Cole's Kryptonite, so he'd win. Here, they share the same strengths and weaknesses for the most part. Vampire Cole only losses because he's the only one with specific strengths or weaknesses over his competition. And because Evil and Good Cole have the same way of replenishing stamina, their fight would just go on forever until both sides give up.... assuming they ever will.

Most battles end with only one winner. This battle ends with only one loser.

ronin is a legend. he got done so dirty like... he had such a good arc in s5 only for the writers to revert him to a generic thief. and the ninja were just chill with getting him locked up in ninjago’s prison for the worst criminals?? what the hell guys. add onto this how corrupt/ incompetent the leadership and justice systems in ninjago seem and... phew, that’s some bootlicking from our favourite little legos /hj

nya knowing stuff about plants is so cute. let them have more interests outside of ninja-ing!

the production value on these fights really is good

honestly idc about lloyd’s whole angst with his dad, they act like sensei garmadon never existed. evil garmadon hasn’t even been around long enough for lloyd to be super disappointed in him on a personal level like that. why can’t he instead be angry at this garm because he’s not the father he remembers and only serves as a walking reminder that he’ll never see sensei garmadon again.

i like the implication that skylor doesnt keep those powers forever, she has to touch an elemental master again to “recharge” so to speak. makes her much less op so that’s cool.

wu broadcasting on all frequencies but wouldn’t the bad guys hear him too?

that transition from the ninja running over the manhole to lloyd and garmadon being in the sewers is super cool. i love cinema.

lloyd's argument with garmadon gives the implication he's mad at him for never being a good father but THATS A MOVIE PLOT NOT THE SERIES ARRRRGHH

what could’ve been cool if instead they made lloyd not want to embrace his oni side bc he's scared of the anger and resentment building up in him over all these years of being the green ninja. y’know like the fandom keeps harping on about but is never actually portrayed in the show.

one thing i like about these new seasons is the clear motifs and musical character themes. paper delivery professionals for the win.

actually i like these post apocalyptic vibes, with everyone trying to look for each other and hiding but rallying secretly.

lloyd: relying on others isn’t weak!

cheers i’ll drink to that. again this could have been really impactful after an arc about trusting too much to mistrusting too much to finally hitting that balance.

cuta jaya moment but nya's arc this season is basically generic “believe in yourself” and like. we've done that before. they literally just brought her back to return to the status quo for the “last” season.

racer 7: speed. i am speed.

ok i know i complain about ignoring the old seasons but at least they tried to tie in the other new seasons like calling vania and benthomar and all that. it's basically a replacement for when previous seasons would bring back the other EMs and such and i guess it makes sense since this is a different era of ninjago. all of that falls apart when they insist on bringing back characters like garmadon though...

oh finally they didn’t fall into the canal for once!

oh no if they make cole and vania get together i’m gonna...read the entire hs epilogues and hs2. worst thing i could think of.

the others are either gonna find another way to find out what happened and come to help them in the nick of time, or this was just a way of explaining why no one else came to help.

oops i watched the final eps drunk after a party and I still haven’t gone back to rewatch them ^^; umm fun moments, dragon form was ???? out of nowhere and should have had a whole season centred around achieving this form, Nya’s character regressed, rushed ending considering how much history they had to tie up, llorumi bad and i miss those little legos already
