Episode 15 "Shore leave"
RUTH?!RUTH! RUTH!!!
You all tried to warn me this was going to be crazy but I thought you were exaggerating. You were not. I was screaming at the screen a lot.
Maybe not the most Spirk but I really appreciate them in this one. I love how Jim is always smiling when Spock is around. How Spock knows exactly how to trick Kirk into taking care of himself. And how Spock was the only one who could keep Jim anchored to reality. I won't talk about the back massage thing, maybe in another post. That's... Really something. Similar to the tits out scene in "the enemy within".
When Spock and Kirk are together and they realize what's happening, that they can will something into existence by thinking about it, and then the tiger appears and attacks them, I was screaming: THINK OF A MOTORCYCLE! imagine how cool that would have been, the two of them riding together (on the same one of course, Spock in the back).
Shout out to McCoy who was on fire this episode, seducing the girl, dying! What a day for him!
Once again the duality of a man is the theme here and this man is, again, Jim Kirk. The violent encounter with Finnegan and the gentle encounter with Ruth (Jim picking flowers was precious). That must be bisexual culture somehow. That was about Jim's experimental phase in college, basically. Although when Finnegan was like: "you're an old man" I was like HE'S 35 !?!?!? (I took that personally ngl).
Now for the not so good part. Honestly, sometimes the way female characters are treated is really hard to swallow. The implications that every accomplished woman in a "man's" field is secretly waiting to be a helpless princess, or that women are too emotional to handle stressful situations... I have a high tolerance usually for these sorts of things and still, it made me a little angry. It's a shame really, because I enjoy everything else so much, and in a way I'm sure there was something progressive about it at the time.
Rating: 9/10
This was a hard one to rate. On one side the women in this one made me cringe badly. But this is the "the Enterprise crew goes to Disney World but they don't know it's Disney World" episode. Which is a hilarious concept and right up my alley. The Alice in wonderland, the space strippers, half naked Kirk rolling in the sand with another man. That's classic. It could have gone all the way to the top, but I have to deduct something for the girls.

tos ep rewrites/stid rewrite for the wip meme!!!
HIIII ty for asking
this isn't technically a fic per se, it's almost like a half-fic half-meta kind of deal - essentially it's an outline of what could be a fic if i had more time and patience. i did this for the first tos movie here and had a lot of fun doing it, and then i also did a small rewrite of "tholian web" here, and i had SO MUCH FUN DOING THEM but then i got side tracked and haven't done anymore. my plans for other episodes/stid are vaguely as follows:
the enemy within - loved this one conceptually but the crass rape jokes left a real sour taste in my mouth. i'd have less of that (or, if i had it, take it seriously) and more shenanigans where someone can't tell the two kirks apart because. they're both the real kirk!! that's the real point of the episode, right?
the conscience of the king - frankly, there was too much shakespeare here, even though it will always be my fav trek episode of all time. i also thought the lenore thing, while a great twist, could have been a little less "but kirk really secretly loved this woman 20 years younger than him!" and more "man this is crazy fucked up that is trying to honeypot this very young woman and surprise she is doing it back to him." more foreshadowing and drama, you know? the tos version wouldn't have to be gambler's knife but it could be something more than what it was considering the huge effect it had on fandom - i always kinda wished it had the vibes that obsession did.
the galileo seven - i thought this episode treated spock like he was kind of stupid. "why is my first command failing when i've been an asshole to everybody?" he has a human mother! he knows how emotions work! he is not stupid! i also thought there was a missed opportunity: they all talked about how callous it was for him to be picking a man to leave behind to lighten the ship, and he was so obviously going to choose himself, but it never went anywhere. let's do him more justice!
metamorphosis - let's chill with the horrific misogyny and have more fun with the accidental parallel kirk made in his really cool speech. like fuck it this is my edit let's just do spirk
mirror, mirror - this one is actually perfect as it is but i wish we'd had more time to se what the mirror kirk & co were doing in the prime universe.
journey to babel - this one is great but i don't think it takes either of spock's parents to task enough for him turning out like that. also, they tricked us into thinking amanda was the good cop in aos and then have her slap him in tos but then acted like that was just fine? girl, let's get into it
the paradise syndrome - i just want this episode without the heinous racism. please please please. easily easily EASILY my biggest trek disappointment ever
requiem for methuselah/the enterprise incident - these two go together as part of a more complex story based partially on the fact that they originally wanted kirk's breakdown in the latter episode to be a real result of the various um things that happened to him in season 3 and partially by the fact that requiem for methuselah WAS my november 5th and i am being completely serious. i didn't think i would ever feel that way again but i did at the end of that episode. you can read about the general idea here at the end of @maulthots close encounters powerpoint which i helped a little bit with.
honorable mention to episode premises i would have loved in a different context - lights of zetar where spock is the possessed one and an episode totally unrelated to wolf in the fold, the funniest tos ep after tribbles, where an enemy who feeds on fear jumps around the ship possessing people. that could have been great had it been in a serious episode and not been played by piglet's voice actor
and finally, star trek into darkness...everything about this movie was bad, except the warp core thing which was accidentally very very VERY good. so i'd rewrite it from the ground up, starting with recasting khan, because that was just a hateful thing to do. i don't have very many concrete ideas on this yet except you'd HAVE to get assad zaman for khan, right? because he can do that thing where he makes his eyes shake? he would have rocked it.
let people send you an ask with the WIP title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it!

POISON FAMILY YOU SAY? SAY MORE RIGHT NOW
OKAY !! so the characters were inspired by Lavendertowne's "if the world's deadliest poisons were people" videos but their personalities and everything else are all my brain going "OMG OMG OMG WHAT IF"
here's all of their signatures:
Tumblr media
the main characters are Cyanide, Arsenic, Mika and Polonium but I love all of them
note: they're serial killers. like I should just say that. they're all serial killers like they are LITERALLY personifications of deadly poisons. tw for toxic relationships and abusive family dynamics as well
Arsenic and Cyanide are bitter exes/the old, bickering married parents of five/some secret third thing, Arsenic is the wine mom and Cyanide has lowkey Odalia vibes
Arsenic (he/him) is very prim and proper and polished, considers himself basically like nobility since he's been around the longest (he first "woke up" in the 400s BCE.) but still bends to Cyanide's will a lot
Cyanide (she/they) is very no-nonsense, strategic, and determined to keep control over everyone else (she's thrown through a loop when TTX leaves, more on that in a minute)
Foxglove (she/her) is like. cute lil girlie who will give you tea. and that tea has a ridiculous amount of deadly poisonous shit in it. she has a pet fox named Whiskers
Anthrax (they/he/it) is probably a cult leader and also works part-time as a postal delivery service guy. he's chill but also not chill, because, y'know, cult leader.
Botolinum (she/her) is literally just there. kinda suffering. absolute girlfailure we love her
Tetrodotoxin (AKA TTX/Mika, they/it) has had enough of the "family business" so it straight-up just runs away and gets a boyfriend and actually the main plot is everyone (mainly Polonium-210, Foxglove, and Arsenic) dealing with the repercussions of that
and last but certainly not least is Polonium-210 (she/they). she's the youngest (she's only been around since like. 2005 whereas almost everyone else is at almost a century old) but is also like. very threatening to everyone else because of how deadly their poison is (literally if you breathe in dust particles of Po-210 YOU WILL DIE.) and because she's super easy to anger and snaps at everyone. I love her because her character development is AWESOME
additional little "headcanons" abt them (though. does it count if they're OCs ?)
most of them are multilingual, for example Mika speaks Japanese as well as English and Anthrax and Polonium-210 know Russian
Arsenic is actually green-coded rather than the red color scheme he has in the speedpaint
he also loves old music ! often you'll hear him humming something under his breath and 90% of the time it's either The Smiths or some ancient Roman tune
he's ALSO a really good painter. he and Foxglove paint together a lot, father-daughter bonding 'n' all that
okay okay I know I can't shut up about Arsenic but he has a LOT of cool little things okay?? anyways he's been mistaken for a vampire on multiple occasions because he drinks blood sometimes
Botulinum has a doll collection. it's very extensive, she has dolls of almost every kind imaginable. she also crochets when anxious so she has a lot of scarves and things lying around
Mika kinda inherited some of Arsenic's music taste, they're a fan of new wave and indie
Anthrax has a really nice vegetable garden and writes poetry. also performs sacrifices every blood moon
Foxglove doesn't only make poisoned tea, but also just like. regular brews as well. and she is REALLY good at it. she's kinda like the group's personal barista and knows what they all like
Polonium is secretly suuuuper interested in sci-fi but would never, ever admit it to anybody. definitely a Spirk shipper
Cyanide collects teeth. they are literally the tooth fairy

i'll never understand people who say tumblr posts about teens who wrote essays on ships and fandoms are fake posts automatically because i can assure you that autistic hyperfixation combined with plucky-teen ingenuity can create many excuses to write about fandom related topics in class
examples below
ALL of my creative writing projects i ever did were "secretly" fanfiction- all of them, i think maybe one wasn't but even that, i'm sure was a reskin of some anime characters i can't remember now. my main muses were star trek characters.
there was one english teacher who actually encouraged open topic papers on things relating to the subject in any way you want (she gave the example of cookies being at a party in one scene so a student a previous year had written a paper on cookies and the history of cookies) so OBVIOUSLY i wrote an essay on shipping after reading romeo and juliet and i only got points knocked off because i didn't clarify why one of my sources (andrew hussie/homestuck) qualified as a good source on shipping quadrants. i also once wrote a star trek fanfic where they visited a planet where the events of animal farm had taken place and the enterprise crew just sort of how to deal with that (i might have this one on a flashdrive somewhere???)
i actually made a board game based on the oregon trail for a class.... and used the torchwood cast as the "pieces" and some of the chance/community chest equivalents would effect you differently depending on the character you were playing (was destroyed by some assholes, but we did get to play it in class, which was fun!)
my US history teacher actually banned me from using star trek characters because i used them as analogies for EVERYTHING (branches of government, representations of different historical figures in power points- we made a fake newspaper once and i called it the "Enterprise Daily" and filled some other areas to make it look more legit like an obituary full of names that mean "red" and of course a spirk marriage announcement) and i actually got sent to the principal's office because OBVIOUSLY i pushed the envelope too far by putting a transparent picture of william shatner over EVERY slide of an otherwise pristine power point presentation but the principal didn't do anything and sent me outside while he talked to the teacher. (i wasn't in TROUBLE, but i was still heavily discouraged from doing that again)
i was on a speech and debate team and literally acted out the sherlock reichenbach fall in a duos category- we never placed, but it was a lot of fun
none of these were an "and everyone clapped!" moment for me and were VERY cringe, but they were still super fun and... honestly a lot of them helped me engage with the material way better than i would have in any other setting. most teachers (save that US history teacher) didn't really care as long as i met the other parameters of the project (see homestuck shipping source not being sufficient) as that's the goal at the end of the day: to meet the standards of the rubric. i only totally bombed on one project, but the teacher let me redo it and the fandom stuff wasn't the problem. teachers don't want to see you fail most of the time. if you ever got a low grade on a project because it had fandom stuff in it, i guarantee you just didn't link it believably enough.
i would be surprised if anyone on this site hadn't snuck their fursona into an art project or an anime gif into a powerpoint or a pokemon into a diorama about the animal kingdom or some fanart into a brochure or- oh- well, you get it

Spirk fanfic rec
Some amazing Spirk fanfic to bless your dash because I’m falling in love with this shit all over again (this is like the 10th time this has happened lol):
Entering Orbit:  Jim escapes to Iowa to avoid the media frenzy following the Narada incident, but a late-night miscommunication results in Spock turning up on his front porch; rated m; 30,957 words
Papers in the Roadside:  Non-Starfleet AU. Jim owns a small bar in Chicago, keeps on picking up strays and taking care of everyone no matter how hard it makes his own life. Spock is a journalist writing feature articles for the Chicago Tribune; he depicts the world with uncanny skill, but hides more than one personal drama and is possibly under surveillance from the Vulcan royal family. They meet by accident just before their lives start to spin out of control; rated e; 49,637 words
Take Refuge in What You Know:  AU - Kirk has moved into a apartment/house and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he's beautiful enigma; rated e; 120,334 words
Listen, this is not only my favorite Star Trek fic of all time, it’s also one of my favorite fanfics in general. It’s right up there with Text Talk and The Shoebox Project from the HP fandom, which if you’ve read, you know are incredible and frankly life-changing. And this fanfic changed my life. The description the author gives doesn’t do the beauty of this fic justice. I suffer from agoraphobia and Spock’s depiction as an agoraphobic man was probably the most well-researched, sympathetic, empathetic, caring, realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be agoraphobic that I’ve ever witnessed in fiction. It made me cry like a child because I had never felt so seen and understood. This writer is incredible, and this fic is incredible. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an AU, which I’m usually pretty wary about, but it barely even feels like an AU. It just feels like Jim and Spock. The author’s understanding of both of their characters’ is perfect, like just a spot-on portrayal of who they are. This fic genuinely helped me accept who I am and helped me understand that I am capable of & deserving of love. If you don’t read any other Star Trek fics (and you def should read more Star Trek fics because they’re amazing), then let this one be the one you read. I dare you not to read it three times in a row like I did.
Observations:  First Officer Spock comments on life aboard the Enterprise and his service under Captain James T. Kirk; rated m; 500,000+ words.
So the author of this fic actually did a thing where they made this fic into two books (similar to what The Shoebox Project authors did many years ago in the HP fandom). They don’t get any money from people buying the books; the cost is just to go towards producing the books. This fic is the equivalent of two LARGE novels. We’re talking 600 pages & up. It’s a huge fic. Now, that being said, I read it in one day. ONE DAY. It’s that good. This is another one of my all-time favorite fics, though not quite as dear to my heart as the one I listed above. It’s focused on AOS, and tbh, I forget that what happens in this book isn’t actually canon. Like it’s so well-told, it just feels like it’s now part of the timeless story of Kirk & Spock. The “professional” Star Trek writers would never be brave enough to do what this author does with Kirk and Spock, though. This fic will make you angry, will make you laugh, will make you cry. It has such a good grasp on every single character. It also shows the love between the crew of the Enterprise, which is always a treat, and it’s beautifully done in this fic. It has a sorta-enemies-to-lovers arc between Spirk and an enemies-to-close-friends arc between Spock and McCoy that is beautifully done and fleshed out. This fic is definitely a journey to go through, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s extremely slow burn, and you will want to slap both Kirk and Spock (and McCoy) upside the head at certain points lol.
Of Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves:  The progression of a relationship, through Coffee Beans and Green Tea Leaves. Basically, it’s an AU where Kirk works at a coffee shop to pay his way through school, and Spock visits often. rated t; 16,429 words
Love, love, love, this fic. It’s cute, it’s in character. They have kind of a rocky start together, so it’s got a little bit of that Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy i-hated-you-but-now-i-love-you-marry-me vibes to it. I’m a sucker for that, if you haven’t figured that out by now lol. It’s really good, and a really enjoyable read. And it’s not too long, if you’re in the mood for something on the shorter end of things.
Please Don’t Touch the Vulcans:  The "yes" is out of Jim's mouth before he can think about it. Jim is chipper about having time off for the holidays. He asks everyone if they want to spend time together but sadly, everyone ditches Jim over the holidays because they have plans. McCoy visits his daughter, Nyota visits her family, and everyone splits. Not knowing Spock has feelings for him, Jim doesn't even bother asking if he wants to spend time together figuring he has something to do. Something cute, romantic with the boys spending time with one another and confessions; rated m; 17,690 words
Super cute and has lots of Sarek, which idk about y’all, but I’m always a fan of. Sarek and Jim kind of get to know each other a bit, and it’s cute. Sarek knows about they’re in love before Spock & Kirk know lol. If I remember correctly, there’s also some appearances from everyone’s favorite: Old!Spock! You also get a little bit of jealous and protective Young!Spock. So you’re in for a real treat with this one.
The Ren shat’var Trilogy:  A split-second decision changes Jim's life forever, as he enters into a bond with Spock in the face of certain torture. Enemies to the Federation emerge from unlikely places, and the command team must contend with unexpected threats, as well as challenges within their own intense relationship. In this three-part series, the Enterprise races across the galaxy to confront the unknown, and Jim and Spock discover the true significance of their unprecedented connection; rated e; 184,411 words
Textual Attraction:  Valentine’s Day does not bring up pleasant memories for Cadet Kirk. But the serendipitous switch-up of his cell phone with a particular Vulcan professor’s will make his day far more interesting –and romantic. Perhaps some new memories can be made! 15,900 words
SO GOOD. Just SO good
Spaceman:  Academy AU. Five times Spock realizes he's attracted to a barista at the academy spaceport, and one time he decides to do something about it. rated t; 3728 words
Short, sweet, funny. You’ll love it.
Subtext: Texting your Vulcan first officer in the middle of the night is never a good idea. Especially when you have an obsessive crush on said Vulcan. The holidays are approaching and Jim is left entirely Spockless aboard the Enterprise when his First takes shore leave on New Vulcan. After some midnight pining, Jim sends a text he instantly regrets. That is, until Spock responds and willingly continues their textual communications to an inevitable conclusion; rated t; 13,032 words
Cute, sweet, funny. It’s a texting fic. I think you’ve probably figured out I love those. This one makes me laugh so fucking hard. Like actually laugh-out-loud-omg-did-i-just-snort kind of funny. Spock is great in this one
All Spock Wants For Christmas:  While Jim is away on a delegation mission, he panics about what to give Spock for Christmas. With help from Bones and Uhura, and in between some spam texting with Spock, Jim realizes he already has the perfect gift. And all it needs is wrapping paper and a bow; rated t; 11,966 words
And here we have another cute, sweet, funny texting fic. Sue me lol
The Morning After:  Jim convinces Spock to take shore leave with him on Risa, hoping the time together will help re-solidify their bond of friendship after some recent tension. Meanwhile, Spock convinces himself he's on Risa for one reason and one reason only, to prevent his wayward captain from getting into trouble. After a passionately illogical night of Romulan Ale and chocolate infused liquor, everything changes when Jim wakes with something other than a hangover filling his head. Something he's sure neither he nor Spock can handle. Because if Jim knows anything for sure, it's that his messed up thoughts belong nowhere near Spock's clean, ordered mind; rated m; 50,381 words
HAHA. This fic fucking cracks me up. You’ve got drunk boys pining over each other & not realizing it. You’ve got accidental marriage. You’ve got bed sharing. It’s great, it’s cute, it’s funny.
Take This Sinking Boat (And Point It Home):  In which Spock pines, Jim isn’t stupid (except he kind of is), and Christopher Pike has had enough of this bullshit; 6698 words
Pike is great in this one, and it’s super, super funny.
Extracurricular Activities:   Spock returns to the Academy from a tour of duty to find an intriguing cadet captures his attention; rated e; 15,433 words
Veritas: Basically, Kirk and Spock are on trial because the Federation thinks they are emotionally compromised by each other, which is putting the lives of their crew in danger. They have to convince a court they’re not actually in love with each other. They think the claims are bullshit. They think it will be easy to prove that they aren’t in love or emotionally compromised, damn it. It isn’t; rated m; 186,80 words
This one is so, so good. A real gem off of Fanfic.net. I remember it was actually one of the first Spirk fanfics I ever read, and it blew me away. The progression of their relationship is really well-done and interesting. It has star-crossed lovers vibes and has some really emotionally intense moments in it, especially for Spock.
A Habitual Affection:  Living in 1930s New York with the Vulcan you're secretly in love with is no simple thing. But Jim never liked anything simple. And then, the big snowstorm hit...; rated t; 7998 words
A beautiful TOS fic about one of the gayest episodes of Star Trek. Love this one.
Atlas:  Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning; rated t; 135,529 words
A beaut. Really great characterization, and the progression of Jim and Spock’s relationship is really well-done.

10 characters/10 fandoms tag. Thank you @therehavebeenstranger for the tag! I think I know how to play this? Hopefully I got the idea right. So here’s 10 fandoms I’ve fucked with, and one of my favorite peeps from it. In no particular order:
1. DCU - Superman/Clark Kent (i mean Bruce is nice, but ma boi Clark is everything to me)
2. Star Trek - S’Chn T’Gai Spock (my OTP OTP is spirk 100%, isn’t everyone’s?)
3. Fullmetal Alchemist - Roy Mustang (He’s my broken little wet cat of a strong military man. And that uniform mmmmmmmmm)
4. BNHA/MHA - Yagi Toshinori/All Might (that double life trope thooooooo)
5. Sherlock - Sherlock Holmes (This was a toss up between him and John. Honestly its both. Together. Forever. Yes I was deep in the “wholock” parts of superwholock)
6. Legend of Zelda - Shiek (my boi! He works as always male. He works as a trans icon. He’s the whole package 20+ years later)
7. Trigun - Vash the Stampede (this is starting to show a pattern. I have a thing for BAMF sunshine boys who secretly hold in all the pain don’t I? 😅)
8. Harry Potter - Severus Snape (block me if this changes your opinion of me. I’m not here to fight fandom debates. YKINMKATOK. This pathetic meow meow can pack so much angst into such a small amount and I love it.)
9. The Expanse - Amos Burton (Listen. LISTEN. The expanse series is amazing and the fact that there are under 250 fics for the books and under 800 total for the show is a travesty)
10. MCU - Bruce Banner (I just love me a tortured genius. He needs soft things and to be treated to kindness)
Gonna tag uhhhhh @superbatlvr1, @lament-of-0rpheus, and @januariat. No pressure to do it or ignore if you already have and I missed it!

spirk headcanons
Hey y'all! I just got 100 followers, so that's awesome! I wanted to celebrate with some of my spirk(mostly spock) headcanons
-
Socks - Spock used to wear boring starfleet issue socks until Jim gives him these really wonky, dorky looking socks. Spock doesn't love them at first, but he wears them for Jim's sake because he just looks so excited to give him something. Spock wears them and actually loves them(because they were Jim's first gift to him and wearing them is like being with Jim) and doesn't take them off for a week. Jim buys him fifty other pairs of dorky unique socks and now Spock wears them every day and Jim buys him a new pair every time he finds a wonky pair.
Shaving - Spock has to shave every day because his hair grows like a beast whereas Jim can barely pull off stubble after like a month. Jim convinces Spock to grow a shortish beard and he does. Suddenly everybody is like hitting on Spock because he looks extra hot with the beard and Jim gets super jealous. He doesn't let Spock grow a beard again, except on shore leaves when it's just them.
Reading - Spock is not a big speech person. Some days he comes home from a long double shift and he's overstimulated and doesn't want to think and he finds Jim reading on the couch. He lays down with his head on Jim's lap and doesn't even have to ask because Jim knows. In the quiet of their shared quarters, Jim reads to Spock in his deep soothing voice while brushing a hand through his hair.
Nightmares - Jim sometimes has nightmares. Well, more often than not. He didn't sleep well and was restless until Spock started sharing a bed with him. At first, Jim would let Spock fall asleep and then slip out of bed because he was so scared that he would freak Spock out if he had a nightmare. Eventually, Spock started picking up on this and one night, Jim was so tired he fell asleep next to Spock and had a nightmare. He woke up screaming, coaxed out of the nightmare by Spock's soothing voice and warm hands around him and Jim is crying but Spock just tells him it's okay and from now on, they sleep together and often in a mind-meld so their dreams are always sweet. Jim has never slept better since.
Sweatshirts - Spock steals Jim's sweatshirts when it gets a lil cold(which is always because Spock is ALWAYS cold) and the sleeves are like three inches too short. Jim starts noticing this and watches Spock unintentionally pull at the too-short sleeves. Jim starts buying oversize sweatshirts so when Spock wears them, they're too big and Spock secretly loves it.
Hugs - Spock maybe tears up the first time Jim hugs him, just a little bit. He's definitely a little touch starved and Jim makes an effort to hug him when they're in private. When they first kiss, Spock cries and Jim asks him what's wrong but Spock just wants to kiss him more and then they lay on the bed and just hold each other for hours after. Spock continues to tear up when Jim praises him or shows him any affection for a while because he grew up on an affectionless planet where he was ostracized and excluded from everything, bullied, and told he was not worthy of love or affection. Here Jim was telling him he was beautiful and clever and sweet and worthy of everything and he couldn't help but cry and he was ashamed and embarrassed for that too but Jim just held him and kissed his tears away, whispering sweet nothings into his ear.
Brags - Jim thinks Spock is so hot, in every outfit, at any time, at any moment. There was one time they came back from a mission covered in mud, drenched in rainwater and Spock looked like the Loch ness monster and Jim just shouted "THAT'S MY BOYFRIEND - HE'S MINE SO KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF". That was the moment Spock also knew that Jim was the love of his life and he would have no one else. Jim, of course, knew that the moment he set eyes on Spock.

How did you start shipping Spones (brotp or otp, either is fine!)
Why did you ship them?
What are the some of the reasons you like Spock as a character? And McCoy?
Some of your fave things about liking Spones: tropes, fics, headcanons, etc?
1. I think I’ve always seen something between them in TOS, but I was blinded by the Spirk destiny stuff for a long time. The smoke cleared a little when they spent so much time alone together in Beyond. It was like “Oh, that’s cute, they secretly like each other more than either of them wants to admit. Oh wait that’s totally the dynamic in TOS too isn’t it” but it probably wasn’t until I fell head-first back into Trek fandom this past September that I went looking for Spones fic just to see what was out there and went “…oh. Oh, this is compelling. Oh, I LOVE THEM.” 2. Listen, I relate to both of these guys hard for different reasons, so their banter and mutual care makes a deep amount of sense to me. Honestly it started as a jokey “haha that’s kinda cute” thing but a few key excellent fics turned this into my primary ship. AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE WAY DE KELLEY ABSOLUTELY AND UNQUESTIONABLY SHIPPED THEM???? Look at how smitten McCoy is in The Search for Spock and especially in The One With the Whales. If that’s not compelling, idk what is. 3. Oh, Spock, my love. He’s so precise! He’s so careful! He speaks the neurodivergent language of my people. And even as he familiarizes himself with human conventions, they still don’t make a lot of intuitive sense to him and he enjoys pretending not to approve. All of these things are at once so, so familiar to me, and they push my “ohhhh, protect him!!!” buttons *hard*. Not that he needs much protecting. But I adore him. Leonard H. McCoy, love of my life! Short answer, I’m just such a sucker for the grumpy-with-a-heart-of-gold types. AOS McCoy’s bitterness and deep tiredness is so recocgnizable. I adore and relate to his long-suffering exasperation as love language. TOS McCoy’s hyperempathy and the way he covers it up with his gruff exterior just endears him to me to no end, and then seeing him smile just makes my entire soul light up with fondness. It’s a very superficial thing to like, but I’m very fond of the little bounce he does on the balls of his feet, it’s adorable. And he’s wicked smart. What’s not to love? 4. Gosh, this ship lends itself to so much denial and I’m not sure why but I’m a sucker for it. “Him? No way. That’s the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard. He infuriates me!” It’s enemies-to-lovers-adjacent without them actually being enemies to begin with. Something I can’t get enough of is Vulcans being super into hands, and Bones’ hands are, of course, legendary…. I’m a big fan of the thing where everyone knows they’re into each other but them. Losers. I tend to headcanon them both as more or less demisexual, which really lends itself to the “there’s no way he’s interested in me back” thing. My absolute favorite, let-me-keep-these-on-my-kindle-to-reread-and-have-feelings-about-forever Spones fics I’ve discovered so far have got to be This Must Be the Place by therev and A Matter of Trust by PrairieDawn.
Honestly, that was also me, I was like “huh these two are something, I’m curious if people ship them because they seem like a pair people would ship” and then I googled and found a ship manifesto and then I decided to read some fic and the rest is history lmao and I agree “this is compelling???” I just did not go into expecting to ship them, so that’s a big mood.
And talking about De shipping them, it always drives me nuts in a good way how Nimoy also was like “You know, the Spock and Bones dynamic reminds me of George & Gracie (a famous TV couple at the time) and that’s how I’m going to act when my character interacts with his” and then LATER names the whales George and Gracie??? HMMMMMMM???? These two really really shipped them.
Also, your post about him just staring and smirking and how much it’s so flirty…have this one of De from Where Love Has Gone :3 (My screencap) That moment in the one with the whales is SO compelling so I feel you RIGHT THERE.
Tumblr media
There is so much I agree with your reasons of liking Spock and McCoy (and some of my faves too especially the wicked smart thing and ahhhh, this response would get long if I got into it) but that is such a good point about their dynamic being adjacent to that kind of trope without being ‘enemies’ (even though people like to think they genuinely hated each other...which...they don’t??) and the hands.
I have a few fic wips where Spock and/or Bones are demisexual and/or demiromantic (especially in a very lengthy one I have) and it’s really a fun perspective to write them as tbh. Fic is great in that you can ‘try’ out different portrayals for the characters while in some way trying to stay true with who they are at the same time and that makes for some fascinating stories.
For anyone who wants to read the fics mentioned (both WONDERFUL and AMAZING stories -- Therev’s fic made me cry and PrairieDawn’s work always leaves me in awe with the attention to detail and characterization on top of everything else) here is This Must Be The Place and Matter of Trust.
[ We’re doing a Spock & McCoy appreciation weekend, so send your answers to these questions or anything related you’d like to send! ]

Note
Either Spock or Data, you choose!
both!!!
Spock
Tumblr media
(Also some Disco spoilers below fyi)
Favourite thing about them: Everything The sass - the humour - the jokes. He’s just so funny and witty and sarcastic, i love that.
Least favourite thing about them: Not so much a problem with Spock himself, but I wish there were more instances in canon where he established his boundaries firmly and didn’t have to walk them back. I feel like a lot of instances where he is made uncomfortable or upset, it’s treated like well that’s something u got to work on Spock, not that his feelings and discomfort is justified. I.e. in All our Yesterdays, no closure on him telling off McCoy’s xenophobia, its just kinda forgotten about/excused bc of time nonsense; in ST:Discovery Spock has lingering resentment about how Michael called him a half-breed etc. (albeit to try to protect him) but then he just....doesnt??? like two scenes after he knocks over the chess set feeling angry about her treatment of him he’s just like, ok we’re friends now and I’ll listen to your problems.....what??? That seemed so out of place and awkward. Like, I do want him and Michael to be reconciled and friendly, but in a realistic way, in a way that acknowledges both their feelings. Anyways.
Favourite line: “I am what I am Leila. And if there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than anyone else.” (This Side of Paradise)
BrOTP: Nyota Uhura + Spock are the best friendship of all time.
OTP: SpockxKirk all day every day every way
NOTP: stop shipping Spock with Michael Burnham u nasties
Random headcanon: Spock continues to draw/paint into his adulthood to help relieve stress, or maybe as part of his meditation. It helps him balance and reflect, and allows him to explore his emotions in a more private setting.
unpopular opinion: I know everyone is horny for him, but even if he’s not ace, I still think Spock is not overly concerned about sex. He’s not kinky or secretly some kind of sex fiend or whatever happens in fanfic lol. He just wants to care for those he loves, and be shown tenderness in return. That’s all!!!
song I associate with them: honestly every song i listen to i force to fit with my trek daydreams/fic ideas haha. That said, Can’t Fight This Feeling by REO Speedwagon is an insanely perfect Spirk TMP song.
Data
Tumblr media
Favourite thing about them: I love how genuine he is, and how earnestly he engages with everything around him. As soon as something interesting happens he drops everything to talk about it, and I love that about him. Best guy, favourite, so wonderful, wow
Least favourite thing: I really have nothing but good things to say about Data, but I wish that instead of always resigning himself to the fact that he’s not human/won’t feel things like a human that he would take the positive route and try to find a work-around. Like, maybe he doesn’t have human emotions, but he definitely does have a unique perspective, creativity, ability to make dynamic choices, reactions, etc. that make him a sentient being. Embrace who you are, Data, not who you’re expected to be!!
Favourite line: “It is the struggle [to be human] itself that is most important...the effort yields its own rewards.” (The Offspring)
BroTp: I think Data and Worf are underrated as best friends. They have a unique solidarity of not really fitting in with the other members of the crew. And they have a fun dynamic, with Worf being surly and stand-offish and Data being open and naive.
OTP: Geordi and Data are so adorable together, and they’re in love and they own twenty cats and its beautiful. I’m also here for an OT3 with Hugh!
NOTP: Don’t make him straight, don’t ship him with mean people, and not with Picard, lol.
Random headcanon: Data has a huge collection of the 24th century equivalent of tourist trap key chains with the names on the license plates. One from every planet that sells them. Everyone tells him they don’t have any value. He has seven hundred thousand of them, colour coordinated in a storage container. He wears them on a bracelet off duty. He just thinks they’re neat.
unpopular opinion: I love that part in Fistful of Datas where Brent Spiner is in drag. I know its not really data but omg its just so amazing
song I associate them with: Haven’t really thought of this, but I could see Data listening to Philip Glass operas. Einstein on the Beach, maybe? They are pretty dense and repetitive, but once you get into them they’re pretty neat.

My Fave Spirk Fics
(!) = Smut
(*) = I love this fic and have gone back to re-read multiple times
(-) = Short fic
(|) = Long Fic
Listening Skills by Aelimir (-)
K/S. Spock has concluded that the Captain doesn't listen to him. Uhura, as the communications officer, disagrees. What is the real problem? AU set before "Into Darkness." Rating changed due to reviewer suggestion. :)
Thy Soul, Alight In The Dark by Aerlalaith (|)
When disgraced former Starfleet captain and current salvage runner James T. Kirk stumbles upon what appears to be an abandoned Vulcan research vessel on the edge of Federation Space, he thinks he’s finally found some luck. The state of the ship and the fate of her original crew however, turn what was supposed to have been a standard day’s work into something quite a bit stranger. As Kirk and his crew debate if they can—or should—wake a sleeping survivor, it soon becomes clear that the nightmare is just beginning.
In Another World by ashayamspirk (!)
Starfleet believed Jim Kirk was destined for command. Jim Kirk would prefer to leave his father's long Starfleet reputation behind him and dedicate himself to xeno-botany. Offered a position to work on hybrid plants on Vulcan, Jim is put into contact with a tutor, the blind xenolinguistics professor, Spock. It's only after meeting him that Jim realizes how he and Spock are connected, and why the Vulcan hates him so much. But then fate has other ideas, and long after Jim leaves earth for Vulcan, they're thrown into each other's paths once again.
Designated by ashayamspirk (!)
“I would like you to read over the contract and consider what you are agreeing to before you sign,” Spock says, and reaches for the PADD on the table. And because Jim is an absolute dipshit who thinks nothing through ever at all, he just shrugs and uses his fingers to scroll to the bottom, signs, and hits send. Amok Time AU
Vulcan Keeping and Other Problems by t_3po (*)
Where's the manual for raising nerdy young Vulcans chasing after local bad boys when you actually need it?
I Will Have This by ashayamspirk (!) (series has been discontinued, consider the first story in the series a one shot)
Just as she finished adding a small box of sweets to her items, she felt a tug on the sleeve of her robe. Turning, she had a smile prepared, and a praise on the tip of her tongue for whatever item her son had chosen. That turned into a sharp gasp when she realized that carefully ensconced in her son’s arms was not any item for sale in the shop, but a very human baby. “Mother, I will have this.”
Something Smart To To by kianspo (|) (!)
In which Jim finds himself fake-married to his first officer every other month. It's not his fault. Mostly. Dowries and Klingons are involved. Starfleet is decidedly not amused.
When You’re Making Other Plans by lah_mrh
Jim always thought the absence of a soulmark on his arm meant he didn't have a soulmate. When he and Spock team up to take down Nero, he discovers how wrong he was.
Somewhere to Begin by jouissant (|)
Everything's fine between Jim and Spock at the end of the first five year mission, or so Jim thinks. But then Spock up and leaves San Francisco without so much as a goodbye, and Jim's suddenly faced with the prospect of life without his first officer...unless he can go to New York and win Spock back.
Of Spocks and Socks by gentleau (-) (*)
The giving of gifts is a most illogical practice, Spock doesn’t know how to be in a human relationship, and no one ever talks to Jim about anything.
My Soul, Reflected, or Mirror Kirk Sucks at Wooing by Nicnac (-) (*)
Five times Kirk tried to win his soulmate over, and one time Spock succeeded without really trying.
Star Trek: T-Shirts, Jackets, and Kisses by IBegToDreamAndDiffer
Or, how Jim outed them to the crew, how Spock outed them to the Academy, and how they outed themselves to Earth at large.
Everything’s Alright by VicBaylies (-) (!)
Set sometime after Amok Time. Spock suffers a relapse of Pon Farr, and Kirk is there to help him out. Somewhat established relationship
Spaceships, Private Jets, and Minivans: How to Start a Global Incident in 5 Minutes Flat by Scientia_Fantasia (|)
One early summer morning in Riverside, Iowa, a spacecraft crash lands into the backyard of a highschooler by the name of James T. Kirk.Earth history is changed forever.
To Catch A Fish by Darksknight (!) (*)
Spock’s realized that while he treasures his deep friendship with Jim, he’s come to desire more. He sets out to tell Jim of his feelings, but finds the task... considerably more difficult than he'd first imagined it to be.
Plucked by cembular (!)
Spock loses his virginity to his captain and boyfriend. PWP
This is Bumbles by PurpleFluffyCat (!) (-) (*)
This porny, fluffy, slightly-cracky(!) fic was written for a Star Trek kink meme. The prompt suggested subverting the usual trope of Vulcans in pon farr as aggressive and uber-dominant, and read as follows:"Spock's in pon farr. Jim finds out and offers to help him out! Instead of being aggressive in pon farr, Spock is super loving, emotional and sweet. Bonus if it takes Jim off guard!"
In Any Language by Enterprisingly (!) (-)
A love story in 10 parts. Based on a tumblr post about relationship words that do not translate to English.
Aubade by jouissant (-) (*)
In which a child is born, and nobody is ever going to sleep ever again.
Sudden Insight by falsepremise (!) (|)
Jim experiences a sudden insight- he is in love with Spock. Fortunately, Spock Prime foresaw this eventuality and has ensured that Jim will have access to the knowledge that he needs to seduce his t'hy'la.
Another Way Jim and Spock Could Meet as Kids by Seasnake (-)
Your heart’s sudden but inevitable betrayal by WhatIfImaMermaid (-)
Every once in while, when he’s feeling the perfect combination of nostalgic and impish, he asks Spock about that night. Most times Spock just smiles that non-smile of his into the curve of Jim's neck, and says nothing.
Or:
They first meet in a bar. In San Francisco. After one of Jim’s epic brawls.
Blue Fields by WerewolvesAreReal (|) (*)
In his thirteenth year James Kirk ends up on Tarsus IV with his aunt and uncle. During the famine he takes refuge with a six year-old named Kevin Riley and a young half-Vulcan.
Missing Pieces by IchabodNasty (Effulgent) (*)
Spock is very young when he loses his leg, he feels like he is incomplete until he meets one James T. Kirk.
The Stars Seem Familiar by lallyloo (-) (*)
After a transporter incident, de-aged Spock Prime is left in the care of Jim Kirk. Nu Spock becomes illogically jealous of Spock Prime. De-aged fluff fic.
Bragging Rights by Ragdoll (Keshka) (!) (*) (|)
AU. Two and a half years into his time at Starfleet Academy, Cadet Jim Kirk meets Lieutenant-Commander Spock, and the sparks begin to fly.
Dynamic by coffee666
Jim is tired of the crew assuming he and Spock don't work well together just because they happen to disagree a lot. To prove them wrong, Jim convinces Spock they should start dating.
Playing up their romantic relationship in front of the crew for spite should be fun. The hard part is that they're both secretly crushing on each other.
Ardor by ThereBeWhalesHere (!)
AU where everything is the same, but when Vulcans find their soulmate they sense it through their pheromones. These pheromones are, well, incredibly insistent. Spock's pretty sure he's immune to them until he meets one James T. Kirk. Really this is just an excuse to write sexually-frustrated!Spock who's pretty much DTF from the get-go.
cast out fear by s0mmerspr0ssen (|) (*)
Kirk saves Vulcan from Nero at high cost to himself. It falls to Spock to pick up the pieces.
A Theoretical Novelty by FallacyFallacy (!) (|)
So, it turned out that Jim's skill at chess was the hottest thing Spock had ever experienced. He only wished he hadn't found that out in the middle of the rec room. Repeatedly. Written for Kink_Bingo for 'Humiliation (In Public)'.
Some Cupid by summerofspock (-) (!)
Tired of their childish fighting, McCoy sets out to set up Jim and Spock. Antics ensue. (i.e. that time i wrote Much Ado About Nothing using Kirk and Spock)
Devil’s Bargain by Rhaegal (RhaegalKS) (!)
Set after TMP. Spock’s impending pon farr makes him wary of agreeing to a second five-year mission, so Kirk agrees to lend a hand (so to speak) should the situation arise. What could possibly go wrong?
Written for the KiScon 2012 zine. Beta-read by jaylee_g with additional editing by arminaa.
That One Time When Jim and Spock Met Their Daughter From the Future by pristineungift
You know your day is going to be weird when some kid you’ve never seen before calls you ‘Papa.’
The level of human emotional and physical sexual satisfaction as determined by one’s partner; an examination of the accuracy of the tiered interpretation as applied to male, homosexual couples by Aerlalaith (-)
Or, in which Kirk and Spock have sex for science.
Searching for Everything by notboldly (!)
Spock never expected his youthful indiscretions to affect his future. Fortunately, Jim is too stubborn to let that happen.
Santa, Baby by rabidchild67
Spock is a department store Santa. Hilarity ensues.
Reasons We Should Date: A Logical Approach by iknewaman (*) (-)
Jim really wants to get across to Spock how well they are together, but he's not sure how to go about it.
Eventually he decides fuck it, the simplest way to get Spock to understand is to walk him through it, and he does so using the wonderful medium of digital presentations.
What We Don't Say (or The Epic Wedding of Jim and Spock) museaway (-)
The first time Jim proposes, they’re naked.
Bang a Gong by waketosleep (|) (!) (*)
The chronicles of the Sad Bastards Club (Enterprise Chapter).
It was just the two of us by sinking_m (-)
Again, everyone knows except for Jim
Measure of Happiness by writeonclara (|)
When Spock chose Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy, he had not anticipated cohabiting with the most illogical, irrational, emotional human he ever met.
On the flip side, Jim never asked for a Vulcan chaperone, especially one as snotty as Spock, son of Sarek.
A Starfleet Academy AU in which Spock adapts to human life, Jim learns very, very quickly never to play a prank on a Vulcan, and there are far too many people after Jim Kirk's life.
No-Win Scenario by CateAdams (!)
A split-second decision changes Jim’s life forever, as a desperate bid for survival results in a bond with Spock. As Jim tries to understand their new connection, he must contend with his own inner struggles. Surprising new enemies are revealed and unexpected threats emerge, and Jim must come to terms with the true significance of their bond before it is too late.
Through Chekov's Eyes by littlebirdtold (!)
In which Mr. Spock hates Chekov and terrorizes the crew, Captain Kirk has the best poker face on the ship, Chekov never means to eavesdrop, Uhura gets some curves, Kirk gets cock-blocked, Spock gets off, McCoy pulls rank, Spock pulls Kirk's pigtails, and love sucks.
Friends With Benefits For Idiots by yaoichan12 (|) (!)
Spock loves Jim but won't tell him. Jim loves Spock but won't tell him. They get to talking about friends with benefits and end up agreeing to start that type of relationship. Both think that's all they'll ever get to have with one another, so they keep their mouth shut about their feelings and just have sex.
Chess, and other Aphrodisiacs by obsidienne (!) (*) (|)
When Jim is brought up on charges of academic dishonesty, he decides to find out who his accuser is.
As You Wish by writeonclara (|) (*)
It's probably a phenomenally bad idea to let someone named Lucifer grant you seven wishes, but, well, why the hell not? Maybe then Jim can finally have that perfect command team from the other universe he so desperately wants.
Then again, wishing that Spock would loosen up a bit shouldn't land him in pre-Reform Vulcan.
Maybe he'll get it right next time.
Sure Thing by FagurFiskur (!) (-) (*)
Based on this prompt:
Because of his reputation (which initally came from nowhere) men have always assumed Kirk is a sure thing and have never tried to seduced Kirk... just used the old wham, bam thank you ma'am (or sir in this case)and have rarely bothed about his pleasure. (...)
(...)So suddenly Kirk finds himself being courted by Spock... at first Kirk thinks it is Spock trying to mess with his mind because Spock is still pissed about the 'cheating' incident but is soon disabused of that notion and he finds himself in his first loving, committed relationship in his life.
Echolocation by Darksknight (-)
Kirk and Spock don’t realize that they’ve bonded right away. The rest of the crew is a different story.
Eavesdropping by coffee666 (-) (!) (*)
Jim knows for a fact that Spock and Uhura and talking about him when they start whispering in Vulcan. He has no idea what they're saying, until he takes it upon himself to learn the language.
___
Spock gushes about his crush on Jim, having no idea that Jim can understand him
Subtext by noodleinabarrel (*)
Texting your Vulcan first officer in the middle of the night is never a good idea. Especially when you have an obsessive crush on said Vulcan.
The holidays are approaching and Jim is left entirely Spockless aboard the Enterprise when his First takes shore leave on New Vulcan. After some midnight pining, Jim sends a text he instantly regrets. That is, until Spock responds and willingly continues their textual communications to an inevitable conclusion.
Pyromania by sinestrated (-) (!)
Jim has been burning bridges since childhood. The Enterprise and Spock eventually change that.
Limits of Interpretation, or: So You Want to Date a Vulcan by druxykexy (*)
Kirk learns that, when it comes to the cultural habits of Vulcans, it's not a good idea to trust other people's research. Spock gets to see a different side of his captain (that may or may not exist). There's a reboot of the TOS episode "Shore Leave" somewhere in the middle of all this.
Note: The McCoy/Barrows relationship is fairly background, and is included due to its presence in the episode.
Armchair Psychology bigmamag (-)
McCoy forces Kirk and Spock to write an ongoing list of things they like about each other. Kirk doesn’t know if he’ll be able to make his weekly quota. At least, not at first.
Blind Date by Aelimir (-) (*)
McCoy convinces Jim to go on a blind date. Only, things don't go as planned.
Abrams-style, except for that fact that George lived.
Perception by Aelimir (-)
Everything happened like it did in 2009, except the Narada never attacked Vulcan. After several missions, Pike retires and Jim is appointed in his place. The downside? He's required to have Spock, that bastard who tried to get him kicked out of Starfleet, as his First Officer.
Jim soon learns that perception is everything, and not all is as it seems.
So Wise We Grow by Deastar (|) (*)
"Commander Spock, we have located your son," the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock's face that he's never heard of this kid before in his life. "If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week."
Looking to the Stars (Like They've Got All the Answers) by shards_of_divinity (!) (|)
Jim and Spock's relationship is on the edge of something deeper than friendship. When their kidnapper's ship crashes to an uncharted and uninhabited planet, Jim and Spock have to fight to stay alive, and the strength of their uncertain relationship is tested when Spock enters Pon Farr...
we have not touched the stars by prouvairing (-) (*)
Sometimes they’ll also ask him why he hasn’t gone out and chased his soulbond yet.
Jim will point to the sky, and say, “The moon’s always there, babe. Don’t need to go chasin’ after her.”
It is January, year 2063. Humanity has quietly achieved interstellar travel, and Jim Kirk’s soulbond stretches into the stars.
These things tend to get messy by WhatIfImaMermaid (!) (-)
A lot, Jim tells himself. A lot of heartbreak.
Or:
It begins because aliens make them do it, and then it becomes one of those things.

oh boy it is MAJOR star trek update time. i've fallen behind (thanks, hades). tuesday we watched "tribunal" and "the jem'hadar," wednesday we watched "the search" part i, and last night we watched "the search" part ii and "house of quark." whew!
tribunal:
O'BRIEN DOES SUFFER MORE THAN JESUS. THE MEMES WERE RIGHT
them shooing him out of the door at the beginning was so cute. he is like a worried mother leaving the station alone. mister workaholic
TECHNICAL MANUALS ON VACATION. scotty would be proud
i love o'brien and keiko so much. i like that their marriage is imperfect but also they're still wildly in love even after being married for a few years and having a baby. i mean, they were literally just rando side-characters on tng and ds9 has elevated to a whole new level. like, o'brien saying multiple times he didn't want her there to see him the way he was, especially if there was gonna be an execution, and her like oh hell No, there are star trek ships that have had less compelling courtroom drama. THEY MADE COURTROOM DRAMA ACTUALLY INTERESTING. even the spirk courtroom drama was a little dry comparatively, all respect due ofc.
keiko was amazing in this. odo was like you are gonna show up and NOT give them the show they want and she was like oh absolutely and followed through. her and odo getting ready to raise hell together was not what i expected but i loved it
it's like such a nightmare scenario for her too. she's never sure when her husband is gonna get hurt when he's away and never sure when she's gonna get that bad news and she still just sticks it out. more on keiko in a few episodes but i love her
unexpected bonding between odo and o'brien!! i loved that tbh. odo is so harsh and suspicious sometimes it shocks me (i'm kind of used to thinking of him as just a little birthday boy), but i love that despite that o'brien's speech genuinely moved him, and he did everything he could to help
i really love when we get into o'brien's cardassian issues. firstly, having seen people he knew be taken and brought back all kinda fucked up, including picard, he must've known exactly what he was in for. he got off lightly compared to picard, but it was still really shocking and upsetting to see him stripped and "processed" also his poor molar. secondly, WHO can blame him for being racist after this...this episode was almost enough to make ME racist. like, the cardassian ideas of trials and justice are so horrific. he was so lucky to have people working on figuring his shit out for him, because that system is DESIGNED to make you give in to despair and become totally resigned, which he almost did do for a second there. that was SCARY.
also, i guessed the plot twist about the guy secretly being a cardassian before they revealed it, which made me feel like a smarty
the jem'hadar:
was prepared to hate this one because it was a "quark being annoying" episode and i am TRYINNGGGG so hard with quark but it's a struggle. i want to connect to him emotionally just a little bit like JUST a little bit. he really is so funny and entertaining sometimes, i'm ALMOST there, but it would be easier if they didn't make him annoying on purpose
that said, sisko episodes for MEEEEEE. we never get enough sisko content. him encouraging jake re: his science project and then also trying to BE A DAD TO NOG even though he didn't want nog along...mwah. and then he also got to have his own action hero moment!! AND he wouldn't that lady leave quark behind even though he didn't want quark there to begin with. HE'S SO GREAT my best friend sisko
i'd like to point out that jake's first request was NOT to visit the gamma quadrant but to pilot the shuttle, which he did eventually get to do lol and good for him
jake and nog were great in this. i really love watching their little shenanigans
plot twist about this lady being a spy was EXCELLENT, i never saw it coming. quark delivering the news (and picking the fake lock!) is an extra nice touch. i like quark better than i like dax, i think (i have yet to connect emotionally with either of them, but generally he's a more fun presence onscreen), and tbf the "are you racist against ferengis" thing was a pretty good running bit
the search part i:
okay, we had to watch this one without subs, so i probably missed a fair bit of it, but i did NOT care for this one as much
firstly, introduction of the defiant, which is definitely just the tng set with the lights turned off lol. come on, get your tng out of here!!
i did like the romulan being there. it really is the wild west out there on ds9 they can just talk to whoever
i loved the bit about jake and sisko finally unpacking 😭
unfortunately neither was not his best self in this episode, which is the main reason i didn't like it.
meanwhile, odo is being a dick to kira who is trying to comfort him and being a dick to ME by extension because i want to enjoy my odo/kira shared screentime, and then we play him needing to go into his bucket in front of quark for laughs when it was Such a big deal in the lwaxana episode, and finally he just KIDNAPS kira and takes instead of staying and fighting? i guess it's not like there was anything he could have done, but it still didn't feel great compounded with "oh i have compulsion to go to this nebula that i'm gonna yell at kira about" who yells!!! like it felt like he was putting the compulsion ahead of what he would normally do. and also, kira spent the entire episode trying to comfort him and he kept rejecting that comfort...come on dude are you crushing on her or not
also, sisko privately being like yeah i tried to keep odo from getting fired but they kinda had a point though...ouch. that's not My Sisko, Who Always Backs Up His People
drove me nuts because odo FINALLY FOUND HIS PEOPLE. i wanted to be excited but i was just tired of him being a dick to kira :(
that said. dax's hair looks MUCH better in the updo. still way too big. but much more bearable.
the search part ii:
luckily. LUCKILY. this episode blew my tits clean off
odo asking All His Questions and kira gently reminding him it's not a police interrogation and him NOT. being a dick to her.
goop hand sex??? did he fuck this shapeshifter lady right in front of kira's salad??? he makes hands to touch people with but also, to goop with.
hey, wtf was up with the implication that odo is SUPER old and possibly fucking immortal? like, they said he'd been gone a long time and they weren't expecting him for another 300 years...do you think he knows how old he is? i don't think he does. he doesn't even know his own birthday. he may not have known the average lifespan/rate of aging for his own species. and now he's getting told he's got at least 300 years left. jesus christ
when dax and obrien showed up i was like no way are they on the fucking holodeck or something that was WAY too easy and then i kept getting convinced it was real but something else would happen and i'd go back to being paranoid AND I WAS RIGHT!!!!! god i love correctly predicting plot twist. i also love being surprised by them so you can never go wrong with a good plot twist for me
"solids" and "monoforms" is really good shapeshifter lingo. i love that. also "changeling" being a reclaimed slur is SO funny
admiral whoever the fuck from tng showing up to be like yeah we are doing another treaty the romulans will have no complaints 😇 girl, like the native american episode? like they didn't have complaints?? i hate this bitch so bad
ACTION HERO GARAK IN THIS EPISODE. however briefly. him knocking that guy out was spockcore. like when spock pretends there's a spider on your shoulder to know you out. same thing with garak said loose thread. i can't believe we got him again so soon...he only had a bit part to play here but hey, did he fucking die?? did fake garak die inside julian's brain??? while in his arms? did julian just have to hallucinate holding garak tenderly as he died for their cause?? are they okay???
oh yeah also whatever the fucj he had going on with sisko was EXTREMELY flirty. wow.
anyway garak dying plus transfer orders made it a sure thing that it wasn't real, but i was so pleased also to have guessed there was holodeck shit behind the shapeshifter door about .2 seconds before we saw it happen. i can't believe odo said "the door was made to keep something in" and still opened it. he is insane(ly in love with kira and would do anything for her including opening cursed doors).
the ending of this episode is what really got me. the shapeshifters BEING the founders. kira having to be the one who goes "you're with the dominion" and odo having to be the one who goes "you're THE FOUNDERS." they figured that awful truth out TOGETHERRRR
furthermore. when odo was like "but why kill so many people, these solids just want to expand their knowledge via exploration" and this lady was like "the solids are nothing like us." HIS. FACE. we got to watch him in realtime evaluate his entire life in about .5 seconds
like, imagine this. he has looked for home his entire life. he has been an outcast his ENTIRE LIFE. and just when he finds it and experiences the brief euphoria of feeling at home in his own skin, so to speak, he finds out they go against everything he stands for and in that split second he realizes that 1. he has more in common with the humanoids he has felt like an outsider to this entire time than he ever will with these other shapeshifters 2. he is no longer an outsider to these particular people because they are his friends 3. he is going to count himself among the humanoids instead of his OWN PEOPLE because this bitch is crazy. ALL OF THAT IN AN INSTANT.
I ALREADY HAVE A LINK: THESE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! KILL MEEEEEEEEE
also the founder lady being like yeah you think you like justice but you actually want order, like us, you're like us was SO EVILLL like he literally does take his justice too far sometimes. he has the potential to be evil AND HE CHOOSES. NOT TO. AUGHGHGHGH
AND THEN THE VERY LAST SCENE...oh my GOD
like. he's seen kira at so many low points and now she is seeing him go through this
AND
SHE
HELD
HIS
HAND
HE MAKES HANDS FOR KIRA SPECIFICALLY TO HOLD!!!!!!!!!
the way he leaned in his he was tempted to kiss her. do you think that's the first time he felt that urge. did he even recognize it. he may have had shapeshifter goo sex with that lady but they didn't KISS. he's never been kissed and he wants a little kissy AUGHGHGH
also, the way she leaned in like she was tempted to kiss HIM. do you think she acknowledged that to herself later or firmly repressed it because she's technically still banging bareil. girl, forget him. odo could be your man
also, hi, kira touching HIS COMM BADGE TO ACTIVATE IT. AND NOT HER OWN. im going to be ILL i had to pause between episodes because i was in hysterics
kira/odo is. so important adn good. i was terrified after the search part i that it would be bad. but, it is so good that i am dying
house of quark:
i think beating hades and watching odo and kira hold hands in the same day made me invincible bc normally i hate quark episodes but i didn't even mind this one. i thought it was the best quark episode we'd gotten yet
i do like the like. every once in awhile you see quark have an emotional response to something and then firmly repress it. like he accidentally killed the klingon and looked down at the blood on his hands and he was SHOOK but then the very next scene he's like alright we're rolling that HEY EVERYBODY I KILLED A KLINGON! which is like, funny, His Antics, but he did the same thing is that little game episode (i know lol) when he found out he was playing with peoples' lives - he doesn't really wanna be responsible for all of that. it's not what i want from him exactly but at least it's consistent and proof he DOES have emotions under there
at the end of this episode when they were like...quark, now people respect you. it's true. i do respect him a little more after all of that. not only was he uniquely suited to sussing out this klingon's crimes he also outsmarted their system of justice and had to be a little brave to do it. "i got lucky" gambling man indeed. his moment with rom at the end was also kind of sweet, but it makes me wish rom was more than comic relief more often.
i also really liked this klingon woman?? normally klingon politics are pretty dry to me, but even though the sexism was annoying her plight and subsequent solving of it was engaging. it's too bad "quark's ex-wife" isn't a subject that's going to get him roasted in future episodes
B-PLOT. keiko and o'brien!!! man. women? feminism?
so i feel like keiko left because the actress was pregnant...idk anything about it and i'm not gonna look it up bc spoilers, but ik she isn't leaving the show permanently so this seemed like a way to explain a temporary absence. and they could have done that a million ways but they CHOSE to make it about her happiness
like, you could have said "oh keiko's doing fine she's just not here rn" for half a season. you could have done "yeah keiko found out her true passion IS teaching and forget botany." they could have even said "the arboretum will fix her!" like, i would have bought it! she's got plants now! but instead they explored her unhappiness and what she wants out of life and how her needs aren't being met by being a SAHM/teacher. she loves botany. she's passionate about plants, and making her profession her hobby WOULD be unsatisfying. RESPECT KEIKO JUICE?? idk it was so nice. she still deserves that arboretum though
also, she's sooo pretty with bangs. suddenly keiko the most attractive woman in the world idk
anyway, i'm so close to coming around on quark. i should watch more quark episodes right after being extremely difficult video games. manifesting this happens for me in the future
NEXT TIME: "equilibrium" and "second skin."

My Spirk Rec List
These are a few of my all time favorite fanfics in no particular order. Most of them are pretty long but I guarantee you all of these fics are worth reading.
Leave No Soul Behind by whochick
If you're Starfleet, you spend your whole life wishing you never see an EPAS uniform right up until the moment they become your only hope. Whether you're dying a slow, cold death in space, or a long painful one on some godforsaken planet, they're going to come for you. So count your last breaths, son, and hold on tight. They leave no soul behind.
[if I had to pick one fanfic as my favorite Leave No Soul Behind would be it]
Don't Stop Believing by kianspo
The story follows Spock from his own days as a cadet at Starfleet Academy to the ‘present day’ when he’s Kirk’s first officer and the Enterprise is on its five-year mission. Essentially, the story of Spock’s first real love followed by the story of him finding the love of his life. Ad astra per aspera.
[This one would probably be my pick for best Spock POV I have ever read]
The Lotus Eaters by aldora89
Stranded on the planet Sigma Nox while searching for a missing away team, Spock and Kirk find themselves pitted against a disturbing native life form. With the captain out of commission on a regular basis and Spock struggling to preserve his stoicism, staying alive is difficult enough – but when a slim chance for escape surfaces, their resolve is truly put to the test. Together they must fight for survival in the heart of an alien jungle, and in the process, uncover the mystery of the planet’s past. Slow build K/S.
[The plot of this one is amazing. The author does the most amazing job at building the planet and the weird and horrifying stuff that goes on in it.]
THAT LOOKS ON TEMPESTS by spicyshimmy
Prince James Tiberius Kirk scales the walls of Prince Spock's palace with a few propositions and two phasers. Prince Spock has to admit--he finds the young Terran prince fascinating. Spock recognized him the moment he grinned. His name was James Tiberius Kirk, seventeen and a half years of age, and sources regarding his reputation were conflicted. He was a prince, no less. And he stood in the arched frame of the open window between Spock and the view that to him had always provided superior aesthetic gratification, the parched mountains and the darkness worn like a cloak across his broad shoulders.
[Love the characterization in this one. Jim and Spock are everything you would hope in AU like this]
Sha Ka Ree by ThereBeWhalesHere
The year is 2258. Jim Kirk is a Lieutenant on the U.S.S. Farragut, Spock the science officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise. When the ships come together for a priority landing party, these two strangers find themselves fighting against the odds for a chance at life in an alien world, and the only way they'll make it through is by relying on each other.
[The slow burn that will make you melt on the inside while giving you an amazing plot at the same time]
We Live in Detail by BlackEyedGirl
The first three years of the rebooted ongoing mission. Destiny forced them back onto the right track but everything else takes work. Things come together and fall apart and come back together, over and over until it turns into a habit. Until the road stretches far up ahead, no matter what the obstacles along the way. [Kirk/Spock by the end, past Uhura/Spock, but mostly the story of Jim, his crew, his captaincy and his ship]
[God, I love how the author writes Jim and their relationship.]
Babel by seperis
Starfleet hasn't forgiven him for how he became captain.
[Love the politics going on here and how Jim deals with all the crap]
Where The Heart Is by RowanBaines
When Spock is accused of assisting a traitor to the Empire, Kirk is ordered to get information out of him by any means necessary.
How will Kirk cope with being forced to torture the man who is secretly his lover? And what will he do when Starfleet Command decides that Spock's time is up?
[My Favorite Mirror-verse fic]
Chains of command by WhatIfImaMermaid
There is never any sneaking around in the dimly lit corridors of ship’s night, or discreet Vulcan kisses in the nooks of engineering. Unless Jim is incredibly tired, or stressed, there are no lingering looks on the bridge, either. The stakes are far too high. OR
Admitting to each other that they are in love is not an issue. The problem is revealing it to everyone else.
This is how Jim and Spock’s relationship would be if Starfleet actually enforced fraternization regulations.
[The tension and angst in this one is perfect]
For Gladness of You by kariye
In which shit goes down in no particular order: Jim almost starts a war, Spock gets tortured, Jim gets kidnapped, Jim gets tortured, Spock gets not-quite-kidnapped, Jim takes the Enterprise joyriding, and mysterious Vulcans with their even more mysterious leader hop a ride for a few weeks. But that’s not what the story’s about. It’s about this: Jim was always going to fall in love with Spock – boldly, recklessly. He just didn’t expect to stay that way. A story about getting over all that.
[I honestly lost count of how many I have re-read this. Amazing story-telling]
Magpie by waldorph
Spock met Jim when he was 7 and Jim was 6. It has since been generally agreed that this was a mistake (or: the one where they grow up together and things are simultaneously better and worse for it).
[Don't usually like fics where they meet as children but this one is special, trust me]

Ok so a while ago (like, one of the first posts here) I added to a post about Jim Kirk and paper books, and which ones I believed the crew (and others) would give him as gifts.
(bit of a rant sorry)
And then I noticed someone who had reblogged it, complaining that I had Spock give him Vulcan Philosophy and how I "must completely misunderstand their relationship because ..."
Look, that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. But it's bothering me, mostly because I don't think I misunderstood them at all.
However it's not the kind of discourse I wanna get involved in, not the least because I don't ship Spirk. (well, mostly not.) So I decided to make a separate post whining about it.
So here's why I did it:
James Kirk is one of those people who would listen to you talk about your hyper fixation for hours. He would ask questions about it, he would learn about it, he would want you to tell him about it because it makes you happy.
He loves learning and he loves learning about the people he cares about. So when Chekov starts talking about Russian poets, he listens. Honestly, genuinely listens. And so Chekov gets Jim a book about Russian literature because he seemed interested in it, maybe he'd enjoy learning more.
And when Spock quotes a philosopher he recognized, he gets him to talk about it. They compare favorite human philosophers and Jim mentions that he hasn't read much of Vulcans. And so Spock, knowing how much Jim loves learning about things, gets him a set of books about them. And Jim returns the favor, getting him some of his favorite human philosophers. (Because the VSA probably didn't focus much on them, human mother or not.)
Spock doesn't get it for him as a “placeholder” gift, he gets it because Jim Kirk showed a genuine desire to learn about something and he knew this would combine two of his interests.
Like: "Everyone else in Jim’s life gifts him books that somehow reflects their own interests."
Uh no. Sam gets Jim a book about someone who's planet is destroyed but doesn't lose hope. Winona gets him a copy of "Night", because it was written by another genocide survivor and she didn't want him to internalize everything. Bones gets Jim poetry, because he does. (But Bones is secretly a romantic) Uhura gets him foreign language books because they were in the Xenolinguistics club together. Like did you even read? My post? Everyone gets him books in interests they share with Jim.
Anyways that comment pissed me off and was (hopefully) about TOS when mine was about AOS and I should probably get over it.
