I suppose that is a writing red flag of mine. I do mix in epithets with my names and pronouns. But what I think my writing 🚩red flag🚩is has been constantly screamed at me in my comments - cliffhangers. I love ending chapters on cliffhangers. It nourishes me, as do the all CAPS comments lovingly shrieking at me ❤️🥰😘

My pet peeve:

Someone here mentioned how they once saw a 5k fic divided into three chapters.

I don’t know why this annoys me because it’s not like it changes the quality of the writing. I know a simple solution would be to just press the “entire work” button, but I just don’t like doing that.

Which is weird, because I’ve read one shots that are up to 50k words before. I don’t know if anyone else is like this, but I’m just much more willing to read a 20k one shot over a 20k word-20 chapter work.

I’m trying to get over this pet peeve. But I’m not sure if I can because I can be such a slut for long fics.

I don't care about chapter length for its own sake, but I doubt you do either if you really think about what was "wrong" with those 20-chapter 20k fics.

Your typical published genre fiction has chapters between 2 and 5k. (This question comes up like every two days in every writing forum of all time, and people have studied it extensively.) You'll get a 500-word prologue or sudden action chapter here and there to punctuate the rest, but if most chapters aren't over 2k, it's often a sign of a writer who isn't able to flesh things out adequately or who doesn't understand how to find a natural inflection point in the narrative.

It's not that a 1k chapter is bad in and of itself: it's what 1k chapter after 1k chapter often signals about the pacing and writing craft.

Not putting in chapter breaks is normalized in fandom, so it's not always a bad sign, but I think it's a more reliable sign of quality if 50k is broken up to some degree. If there are no chapter breaks and no visual section breaks of any kind in a fic of that length, I definitely take that as a bad sign.

In my original novels, if I have a chapter that is 5k, I'll take a look at it to see if it should be two instead, based on the content and flow. (5k is a very normal length for novel chapters, but my personal style tends to be more like 2-3k, so 5k is a red flag that I've missed a natural break point.)

But if an entire work is 5k, my experience is that it usually does not have a natural break point to divide it into chapters that feel organic, much less two break points.

And if it does, it's because it's 10k+ of concept shoved into 5k of author writing stamina and unwillingness to revise.

I thought Saeyoung was looking at his brother's happiness, but he's actually looking at us

in addition to Chairman Han, I am petitioning Cheritz to also give us a Driver Kim and Prime Minister route. the former has a heart of gold but his voice and cadence makes me think he may have k!lled someone in the past, and I know that the latter has, but red flags never stopped us before

I think one of the reasons I get a little sad the Anglosphere BNHA fandom itself doesn't seem to like honorifics is that a lot of nuance is missing. For example, as a meta-writer, Dabi using Ujiko-san was a big ass red flag for us, since he doesn't use them often, and formed the basis of my original argument they knew each other prior to the League before we even had them meet in canon. I was right.

But even small stuff - Toga uses "Kun" for Jin, which is something you would use for a peer as a girl her age, which is interesting given he's a good fourteen/fifteen years older than her. Compress uses "-chan" for her despite being the same age as Twice, which shows he definitely thinks of her as a little girl and feels close enough to use it. Yoichi in the newest episode uses "Kun" for every one of the other Vestiges he names by name, even Nana, which is rare but not that weird because it's a way to refer to a female subordinate without being way too personal and yet retaining the hierarchy "-san" doesn't afford.

I think what I'm trying to say is that honorifics are great ways to communicate the relationships between characters, and also communicate things about that character too because all of these hinge upon following social rules and characters who don't use them or use them improperly are seen as rude or just odd.

I get, for fanfiction writers, however, this is complicated and an extra amount of pressure. Learning the many nuances around this has taken me years of research and also just being friends with actual Japanese people who have clarified things for me. A lot of writers aren't very willing to put in that sort of time, and I get it. It does however mean a lot gets lost. It doesn't help that our translator tends to translate them as well and not retain them, so the only time English-speaking fans encounter them are audibly in the Anime's subs, and I'm not sure how easily people pick up a lot of the words.

How Shadow and Bones Differentiate Villain and Anti-Hero

Alright, first I need to claim the fact that I love dark, edgy, but misunderstood bad boy in stories with the potential of epic redemption. Loki from Marvel. Jason Todd from DC. Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time. Zuko from AtLA. You name them, I simp them.

So when I watched this new show on Netflix and shown a tall, handsome man in dark clothing, both respected and feared for his power. I feel... nothing. 

WHICH IS WEIRD! Like... he’s obviously my type. Complete with the sad backstory and vicious streak. So I kept wondering why I wasn’t enamored by the Darkling, Alexander Kirigan. I wasn’t surprised he was the main villain, I even expected it. But I usually at least have a bit of sympathy for them. This OOC behavior of mine made me introspect myself and the show, trying to find out which part gave me the red flags before Mother Darkling decides to pop the chosen one out halfway in the season. 

That’s when it hit me; there were red flags! The show had been subtly trying to tell us Kirigan is a manipulative boyfriend not just by great acting and good directing, but by comparing him with the actual anti-hero of the story who I actually love; Kaz Brekker. 

Here’s the list of signs you might not notice of why Kirigan is meant to be a Villain instead of an Anti-Hero. 

1. The Eyes

"The eyes are the window to the soul" is a common saying and and the key to good acting for any good show. Eyes tell us a lot about what a person’s character is like and SaB showed us the difference of a sincere man and a man with a hidden agenda.

Look at him! Look at that little smirk. Look at the gaze. That's the look you find when someone's evil little plan is finally coming together. Not one awed by the power or by Alina. A blatant sus move is what I'm saying. Congrat, first flag planted.

Sure he could still fall in love with Alina, but that doesn't stop his agenda either. All it does is potentially create conflict for him to pick either his plan for revenge or life with Alina.

In comparison, look at Kaz when he said this to Inej; "She isn't like you, no one is." Straightforward eyes. Serious grim. No nonsense tone. Inej is one of the most talented and terrifying rogue-assassin and Kaz just blatantly said that he kept her from 'slavery' because of who she is, not what she's capable of. Like... the man has no shame being known to love her while still trying to be professional (or as professional a thief can be). I can respect that.

This is the eye of a man who would abandon everything to make sure she comes out alright in the end. Do not argue with me on this!

2. Leverage and Status

The moment Alina steps into the Little Palace she was treated like a princess. A palace, by the way, that’s managed by the Darkling. She gets favorable treatment; from the food, Zoya displaced when she fought Alina, a horseback ride just the two of them, asking her to call by his name to make them familiar, a black uniform that might as well be claiming???

Dude is desperate is what I’m saying. 

Sure, this could all be romantic gestures. There’s the problem that Kirigan is superior in status and name, powerful Grisha, and has a vested interest in her power. Pursuing romance while Kirigan has the ability to make her life heaven or hell with a snap of his finger made every single decision be seen with wariness. 

"Beware of powerful men," Genya couldn't put it any better.

Had they pursued romance after they destroy the fold, cementing Alina’s position as a saint more. Then I might have let go of that wariness. 

I’m only proven correct when the moment Alina turned away from him, Kirigan made another leverage by (spoiler!) putting an antler to her collarbone... eeeewwww much?! 

That’s how desperate the Darkling is to be in control of a person and a situation. 

And when no letter came for Alina? That a big red flag because who else in this castle can control the coming of going of letter with the Savior. HMMMMMMMMMMM.....

Then there’s Kaz. My man. There’s no competition. This guy held no leverage on my dear Inej. When she almost decided to leave, Kaz didn't force or convince her to stay but he ask her. Doesn't remind her of her debt whether monetary or life debt to him. In fact, this guy needs money for revenge but instead mortgage his main source of income for her freedom.

HE POSTPONED HIS LIFE GOAL TO FREE HER FROM DEBT ASJHAKFSDJGLDFJ!!!  

What more do I need to say? 

3. Sympathy Card

This is the type of point you want to watch out from your partners, ladies, gents, and others. The sympathy card is the way to go when anyone wants to reach out to you so you can take care of them before they abuse or gaslight you. 

While it’s good to share trauma and eased the burden, sometimes it's healthy to ask yourself whether the person can take advantage of you and to verify whether they lie to you or not.

When Kirigan shared about his past as a sympathetic boy with his secluded fountain and coin. Everything about that scene rang warning bells for me... the part he had requested her to use his color... requesting to horse ride with just them two... sharing sob story that may encourage Alina to help him...

Kudos to Alina to see through the fact she's seen as a means to an end.

It was only when Kirigan showed righteous anger and frustration of a war that's killing his people did Alina finally opened her heart to him.

Kaz however doesn't use the sympathy card. Heck, the man likes to believe he shed away any weakness and threw it in the harbor where it belongs. Kaz hates weaknesses. And garnering sympathy is an admission of weakness for him.

We still know there's a tragic backstory as any decent anti-hero would have... but by not sharing that, this implies that Inej and Jesper stayed because of who he is, and not because of who he was or how he came to be. They don't need a sob story to stay together and that showed a stronger bond between them.

4. Friends

To be frank, I find this the most hilarious because this point is the one that convinced me that Kirigan was secretly an evil bastard.

He doesn’t have any friends!!!

Like... dude had a literal witch army, a wife once, a fuck buddy, and a girlfriend but there wasn’t a single moment in the show where someone, outside of Alina and superior, to speak casually to him. 

You’re telling me this person... the most powerful and influential Grisha in the East Ravka, charming as hell, handsome as fuck, and yet he doesn’t have friends?! 

“I’ve buried good soldiers... friends...” Get the fuck out of here! WHAT FRIENDS?!?! Maybe if you get off your little power trip from your self-made pedestal, you can actually be less of an asshole and make one. 

Sure he excused himself by blaming his ‘ancestor’ for being a shadow summoner. I can see how the fear makes it hard for him to get close to anybody. But all the other characters who are part of his army only ever shown to speak with him respectfully, and the royalty even commend him. No one disrespected him even openly and you’re telling me he doesn’t have one friend amidst all these people?!

In comparison, look at Kaz. He’s brash, crude, and unapologetic. He held true to his moniker ‘Bastard of the Barrel’ and yet this ass has friends. They show Jesper joking with Kaz, and Kaz has shown to banter with him back as well as tolerating his gambling addiction when it could have jeopardized the Job. Inej was shown to actually argue and have disagreement with Kaz when he’s technically her boss. Can you imagine the Darkling doing that? CAN YOU?!

No. Because he's a pretentious ass. That's why.

This is a great example of the use “show not tell” of how Kaz despite his obvious edges has a soft spot shown through his relationship with Inej and Jesper, who have a friendly dynamic. I can attest that while Kaz didn’t create a good first impression, I love Jesper and Inej (they are precious!) so much that I project it to Kaz in extension.

On the other hand, Kirigan’s goodwill had only ever been told by outsiders or himself. None from his inner circle (which he doesn’t have!) other than his mother, who ended up outing him instead. 

So I applaud the writers and showrunners of SaB to actually have subtext signs of a manipulative bastard. The Duckling is a good villain character that's complex but unredeemable. Sometimes, you just have a good ol' charming villain you can't redeem and that's okay.

Stabbing their backs and pretending it's okay, it's something normal in society nowadays. And there you are, hands within your pockets, crossing the junkyard alley straight to the clubhouse. Soon, the latin music fills your surroundings starting to sound louder as you reach the epicenter of the party. The night Angel becomes a full member.

He didn't ask you to come, even if there wasn't he desired the most than being with you. He knew about your plans and he didn't have the right to put you into a corner. He said you could celebrate the next day. What Angel didn't know is you had your preferences clear and a decision was taken. With a smile from ear to ear, your gazes find the other. He's sitting close to the bonfire with his brothers and some of Vicki's girls trying to catch his attention, drinking and pretending he is having a good time. But the gesture on his face changes completely at the moment he realizes that you are really there. It's not a vision, it's not a dream, it's not alcohol intake.

Cleaning his mouth with the back of his hand after a sip from his beer, he leaves it on the ground standing up from his chair. Even if the talks continue around the two of you, you have earned every single pair of eyes there, following the new brand member walking towards you.

“Shouldn' yo—”.

“Maybe”. You interrupt him, shrugging your shoulders and stopping your feet some inches away from him.

“Did you… cancel your plans for me?” Angel asks, trying to hide a funny and triumphal smirk while tangling his hands on his abdomen.

“Maybe”. You repeat licking your incisors to gulp a giggle.

“Your family must be… very disappointed”.

“You are my family, Angel”.

The fleeting shine that crosses his black orbs gives you shivers. The way he has to lick and bite his bottom lip lets you know he is somewhat nervous after hearing it. You're more than aware that he has strong feelings for you. Real ones. You aren't a game for him. You aren't a possible one nightstand. Seeing you there, hearing you say those words get his heart racing at the edge of collapsing.

Angel doesn't hesitate to rest a hand on your cheek to place a warm kiss on the other. His lips are trembling, just like his fingers, and you can swear that it's the sweetest thing you have ever experienced. You can't help but close your eyes when you feel his mouth coming a little closer to yours with short and clumsy kisses, feeling the fear on him of you pushing him away in the last second. But you can't move.

When his lips find yours, fireworks explode inside your belly. The Big Bang happens around you. The time stop. His breathing gives you goosebumps and his tongue parting your lips to play with yours gives you shivers. You haven't ever felt this good, as if you had the world in your hands as if nothing were impossible. That's what Angel provokes in you. Sensations and emotions that you can't explain, but the kind of ones that made you and made him addicted to each other.

“Ain't nothing without you”. He whispers too slowly, dragging every syllable through his tongue, not being able to open his eyes yet. “You're the air tha' keeps me afloat”.

“Angel…”

“No, listen… I'd never do anything to hurt you, you know it, right? Despite… wha' people think, I can make it work. You and I. The club, a life together”. His lips brush yours so soft that it's making your legs tremble, having to tangle your fingers in his kutte. “I've always wanted you, I've always loved you even when I couldn't love myself, 'cause you have done it fo' me”.

“It will work, Angel. I know it. We'll make it work”. You cheer him up, feeling how the smile on his lips becomes a little bigger. “I adore you... You're a blessing to my life, mi angelito. I wouldn't rather be in another part of the world than by your side”.

As soon as his strong bare arms wrap your mid back while a purr escapes his throat, you break into giggles putting your hands on his nape. Angel embraces you as much tight as he can, practically melting into one figure for a couple of seconds. He's a true angel from heaven, but his hugs are warm like hell.

“Are you gonna show me your new patches, ah?” You are very curious and interested when he pulls himself away to hold your hands, noticing them on his flaps.

He nods his head with a proud grimace, pointing at them and the absence of the prospect one, before turning around to show you the bigger one. Mayans MC insignia. Colorful and clean. You can't help but trace it with your fingertips.

“You like it?”

“Pretty much. Looks good on you”.

“Everything looks good on me, baby”. Clicking his tongue and raising his eyebrows, Angel faces you again to start to walk backwards to his brothers.

You roll your eyes inevitably, letting him guide you to be greeted by his new family. A family you are now part of.

hey I've been reading RotE because of you and I've just finished Assassin's Quest and am enjoying it so far. I'm curious your view on how Dutiful was conceived and also Molly and Burrich, though. I was kind of uncomfortable with both, but I'm not sure I'm mentally framing it well, so I curious on a different perspective.

Honestly, having read those books when I was a lot younger, I didn't really bat an eye at it on first read. If you're asking for my take on it now…well, I can definitely see why it might make you uncomfortable, but I don't think I can agree even with the benefit of hindsight.

(obviously spoilers for the Realm of the Elderlings books if anyone else sees this)

I'll start with Molly and Burrich, because…yeah, the guy is probably old enough to be her dad, or near enough. The timeline of these books never felt super precise to me, and I'm working entirely from memory, but Burrich is an adult when Fitz is like, six, and if memory serves Molly is a little older, but not by much. So yeah, we can assume at least a decade and a half's worth of age difference there, probably close to two or even more.

That said…my take on age differences is that, while it can be cause of alarm, it's definitely not an instant red flag for a relationship, and it comes down more to circumstances. And the story makes the circumstances clear that, while Molly is definitely forced to uproot her entire life due to complicated circumstances, Burrich has none of the blame on that and is in fact genuinely looking out for her for Fitz's sake, and that mutual feelings developed after they were already stuck together, which is a thing that happens when you share a traumatic experience with someone. Keep in mind that Burrich and Fitz are very alike in many ways (in part because Burrich was one of Fitz's biggest father figures), so like…it's not that big a stretch to imagine them both being Molly's type.

Now, again, another thing that might be make you uncomfortable here is the aforementioned fact that Burrich is (well, was, at that point) one of Fitz's main father figures. Which would be a problem, if Molly had ever…like, interacted with him in that respect (did they even meet at all before they had to go on the run? I'm admittedly fuzzy on some details, usually my rereads have focused more on the tawny man series).

I don't know what to tell you. Weirder couples happen. Molly was an adult, even by our standards, by the time she and Burrich got together. While it's fine to be wary of an older man potentially abusing a younger woman, I don't think denying the woman's agency in the situation is really the way to go about it. Especially in a case where the characters are fictional and definitely meant by the writer to be a pretty healthy couple.

Then there's the matter of Dutiful's conception, which. Well. First of all it's hard to really judge "magically body-swapped with your nephew to impregnate your wife because your body is no longer able to do the deed and/or would hurt her in the process" by any real world standards. It's kind of hard to process consent in this scenario, because Verity is the one sleeping with Kettricken, in every way that really matters. You could maybe make a case that he's doing so in a very specific way she didn't consent to, the way, say, a guy pretending to put on a condom would be violating his partner's consent? But like…Kettricken is consenting to unprotected sex, so the analogy doesn't really work for me here. And on the flip side of the matter, Fitz's narration makes it clear he knows what Verity is up to with his body and seems okay with it.

Really, the closest analogy I can derive from this is that of a sperm donor, which…I'd say is pretty uncontroversial? Maybe you could say it's weird not to ask Kettricken to use a sperm donor. That's the closest I can get to finding a problem with that scene.

Actually if I have any issue with Dutiful's conception it's [spoilers for later books] the fact that Dutiful never finds out about it and I'm not sure Kettricken does either? I can't remember if I invented a conversation between her and Fitz in the Fitz and the Fool books or if it actually happened. It's been a while since I've read even those and I haven't re-read them at all. It's especially odd given that Dutiful proooobably inherited the Wit from Fitz (though Kettricken points out he might have gotten it from her and I personally headcanon that it's both) and Fitz feels some guilt about it, so it feels like it should have come out at one point or another.

That's…my takeaway on these. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts, though! Maybe I missed something. It has been a while.

(sees another fandom that I can ask you about and cheers) Orphan Black! Thoughts? I don't know Dr Who but Tatiana is one of my favorite actors period.

Anon you are so sweet! I'm always happy to chat about fandoms and characters and whatnot, and I will never not appreciate the majesty of Tatiana's acting. That is one of the greatest parts of the show hands down.

Orphan Black, to me, is a show that had incredible potential, but didn't really live up to the excitement it created. (Loooong post ahead.)

The thing is, Orphan Black builds a chilling mystery and background, the world it gradually creates as it goes for about the first two seasons, got be very invested and made me wonder a lot about where it was going to go and what the answers were. The setup is brilliant, right from the start with that iconic cold open of Beth's suicide. The unknown is what really helped this show get as thrilling as it was, because the actual answers behind the unknown were kind of hit and miss, and it seemed like far too often, the show just wasn't interested in telling it's story. Hijinks where the clones impersonate each other in slice of life events? That's fun at first and it really works well as they're still getting to know each other. But after a while, it gets tedious, and it seems like the show would rather fuck around and have dance parties (seriously, that scene was such a #BigLippedAlligatorMoment) than focus on the story and the threat that the sisters are facing. Virtually all of Allison's plotlines are like this, they feel like they belong in a different show, and for some reason the writers insisted on giving her one of these storylines like, every season. After Allison passively murders her own friend out of suspecting that she's spying on her, I just don't feel like an arc about her running for some PTA office position even matters. It doesn't feel right.

Speaking of that, here's another example: Donnie. Why did the end of the first season suggest that he was this secret mastermind working for Leekie? The whole idea just deflates in Season 2 and doesn't really go anywhere. He just goes back to being the bumbling sweetheart he was before. Why even have him be the spy? Maybe it should have been Ainsley. Do you want to know the exact moment that I think Orphan Black went wrong? Like, the specific scene? When Leekie was killed off. The character who had thus far been the Big Bad, gets taken out in the stupidest possible way, a literal accident on Donnie's part, and it's even played for laughs. After that point, the show really struggled to regain it's footing, though I don't think it completely went off the rails until about Season 4, and it was still generally hit or miss. Like, some stuff was really good. The introduction of the Castor clones, the development of Rachel's character (I'll get to her, trust me.) and the reveal of Kendall Malone. But it seemed like so much else was just forgotten or otherwise not resolved. Whatever happened to Cal? Sure, the show wanted to focus on the sisters...but Kira deserves to know her father if she wants to. That's just one example. It's a crying shame because this show is sometimes incredible. The metaphor that I always use for situations like this, is a card game. The show has all the right cards in its hand, they're just not being played.

The two strongest characters, at least to me, were Rachel and Helena. One of these characters was superbly written and went through a devastating arc. The other was Helena. We need to talk about her. In Season 1, she really cemented herself as a memorable presence with her trademark accent, her scars, her whole damn personality (again, hats off to Tatiana) and of course, that iconic screechy theme music that accompanied her. Which at first made us jump, but eventually made us cheer. I adored Helena, and I loved the development of her relationship with Sarah. Who went from shooting her in Season 1, to being deadset on rescuring her in Season 3, being furious with Siobhan for betraying her. (This is unrelated but Siobhan has the same " twist villain fakeout" at the end of Season 1 that Donnie does, and it's quite frustrating.) And yet, I swear, the writers just didn't know what to do with Helena half the time. They put her on a bus for long stretches, including one point where she just up and leaves Allison's house in Season 4, for no given reason. And the characters just kind of...don't care. The same thing happens when she gets arrested. No one cares to try and find Helena, even though she's unstable and often a danger to those around her. Even though she's by herself with no real ability to function in society. Even though she's pregnant. There is no excuse for this, and no Sarah, that "I'm sorry, I avoided you" scene in Season 5 is not going to cut it. It's such an afterthought.

I'm being rather critical, but I hope you can tell that this is from a point of passion. I genuinely enjoyed this show and getting to watch it. Just that sometimes it didn't feel like the show cared that I was watching. However, this was not true whenever Rachel was onscreen. Look, I'm a Merula Snyde stan, so you can probably already guess how I feel about Rachel. Despite her crimes, despite her constant slipping back the dark side, I felt so bad for Rachel at the end of it all. That scene with Kira really sums it up. "Who hurt you?" "All of them." And no scene is more intense than when she stabs out the eye cam. Like, I'm sorry, I pitied Rachel pretty much from Season 2 on. Her parents were horrible to her, and I'm supposed to think Ethan is the good guy here? He kills himself in front of his own daughter, telling her that she doesn't deserve him. And then Sarah shoots a pencil through her eye, causing brain damage and requiring a long recovery. I'm not saying that Sarah was wrong to do what she did, just that if I were in her shoes, I'd still feel a degree of guilt for Rachel's condition. In the end, I'm devastated that she was barred from Clone Club, when she made the right decision at the point it mattered. But there's just too much history there, and Sarah won't ever forgive her. (Though again, I do feel as though there's blame to share.) Rachel is my favorite character and I never expected her to be. But she's just so complex. Side note: "Enjoy your oophorectomy" is so damn quotable. I don't know why but I love that line.

So, Rachel's my favorite. Who's my least favorite? It might surprise you. It's Delphine. I'm sorry, but I just...I couldn't get on board with C*phine. Not after Season 3. I was waiting for the point that the show would push to finally redeem Delphine for her turncoat role, for all of the hell that she put Cosima through. By Season 5 though? I realized that as far as the writers were concerned? She already was redeemed. Even though she did nothing to earn it, except be presumed dead by Cosima. The way she treats Cosima in Season 3 is actually disgusting. Her reasoning for breaking up with Cosima is circular. She has to love "all the clones" in order to be with Cosima, and the way to do that is to take over Rachel's job, which means they can't date anymore? I'm not the only one who thought that didn't make sense, right? Oh and let's talk about how she stalks Cosima's date, breaks into her house, and threatens her life. Red. Flags. Cosima even says the line, "If you're not going to be with me, just let me go." I'm sorry, that should not be something she has to beg for. Delphine's behavior made me want her to stay far, far away from Cosima. Who is, incidentally, a sweetie and I absolutely adore her. I legit have trouble remembering that Tatiana's playing her because she just looks and acts so different. That said, even though I immensely disliked Delphine, I am so very glad that they made one of the clones gay. Just like I'm glad that they made one of them trans. (Though...Tony wasn't handled especially well.)

In general, I do think the earlier seasons were stronger. The Brightborn arc, while interesting, didn't really contribute much to the overarching narrative. We got the backstory on Beth's suicide and finally learned the truth about her, I suppose. Still, even though Beth is one of my favorite of the clones, and I never expected her to be either...I feel like the actual reason given for why she took her own life was rather illogical. She apparently did it because the investigation was putting the clones in danger of another Helsinki. Okay, but just because Evie Cho says you should off yourself, doesn't mean you have to. You could just, like...stop investigating. And if you die under mysterious circumstances without explaining anything to the sisters, they're not going to be put off from the investigation. They're going to look into this even more, because they don't know why they're not supposed to. The reveal that she and Art fell in love toward the end adds an extra gut punch, but it also doesn't make sense because wouldn't Art have referenced it during the period that he thought Sarah was Beth? On the other hand, Season 4 also introduced MK. And I have such a soft spot for her. I adore that sheep-masked sweetie. Everyone always asks "Which clone would you date" (because fandoms can think of nothing else I guess) and I never see anyone give any love to MK. Her death absolutely tore me apart. I am glad Siobhan avenged her even if she went down at the same time. Side note, her last word being the affectionate "Chickens..." Broke me.

Season 5 was a strange beast. In general, it seemed like we were finally getting some answers to the questions that were hanging over us. Exploring the deep mythos. But then they kind of turned it around and made it just be a Wizard of Oz style fraud twist. Westmoreland isn't really inhumanly old, he's a charlatan. I don't know why that was necessary in a science fictional show. I've seen the interviews and I get what they were going for, it just feels like it would have been cooler and far creepier if he was actually that old. The puppet master pulling the strings the whole time. We also finally get some answers for Kira's superhuman healing abilities (though we never learn how she's telepathically connected to the clones) and I'm loving it, but the trouble is, it's inconsistent. Ethan "Why is this guy so popular, he's an asshole" Duncan told Rachel specifically that Sarah being able to have children was a fluke, that the clones were "barren by design." I don't know, the whole concept of Revival and of the "magical island" was really foreboding and tied in with the earlier references to The Island of Doctor Moreau. Especially that song about "Revival's Children" just...the shudders, man. But just having it be a regular old scam is...a letdown. I know it may be more realistic, but I don't always need realism in my scifi. The finale is interesting, in that it's mostly an epilogue. I'm glad the clones (sans Rachel) got to live happily ever after, but there are two gut punches right at the end that are total nitpicks but they bother me. Helena naming her kids after Art and Donnie? And writing a memoir that she names "Orphan Black?" Those two tropes can go die in a hole. They can enjoy an oophorectomy, because I'm so sick of them.

The potential of Orphan Black was practically infinite. The results of Orphan Black fell frustratingly short.

Book: The Nanny Affair

A/N: Writer's block due to feelings of inadequacy is real. But, my super amazing and beautiful sister @fanjessfic is, simply put, an angel. She challenged me to write a ficlet about one of my favorite characters (she wrote a super sweet one here). This is the "Once... Always..." universe that I am now referring to as "the Schuyler-Dalton Chronicles" (or as we jokingly call it, "The Red Flags" 🤣).

Cinching her pink terry robe around her waist, Brynn saunters to the closet in her own private quarters of the penthouse. She absentmindedly scrunches her dampened waves, considering her outfit options for the early summer morning. As she reaches for a relaxed pair of ripped denim shorts and a faded Metallica tee, a throat suddenly clears behind her.

"You left me all by lonesome this morning."

She giggles, rolling her eyes at the deep, sultry voice. She lightly pads over to her boss--and newly established boyfriend--stealing a quick kiss.

"Mmmm, sorry, babe," she slides her fingertips across his bare chest, relishing the contours of his favorably strong physique before savoring another taste of his lips. "You were sleeping so soundly--"

"Shoot," he snickers. He rubs his hand over his stubble, hiding his pleasure-filled smile. "Do you blame me? After last night? And that thing you did the third and fourth time with your tongue--?"

"Samuel!" she squeals, swatting at his arm. She retreats to the bedroom with her clothes.

"And I still have you screaming my name."

Brynn pauses and playfully glares at Sam, raising a mischievous eyebrow.

"What are you doing anyway?" Sam inquires, leaning his body against the doorframe. "It's Saturday, and the boys don't come home until later."

"Eleven." Brynn slides on her undergarments before slipping on her chosen apparel. She grabs her well-worn black Chuck Taylors, and hastily ties them onto her feet.

"Huh? 'Eleven'?"

"Yes, Sam," Brynn counters, slightly annoyed. "I'm picking Mickey and Mason up from Hudson's at eleven, which only gives me three hours."

"For what?"

"Wow. Seriously, Sam?" She condescendingly chuckles. She stands, tying a long-sleeve, red plaid button-down shirt around her hips. "Do you think I just play with the boys?"

"Well--" he clicks his tongue, rubbing the back of his neck. "--yeah."

Sam attempts to interject, but Brynn holds her hand up, silencing him before he starts.

Brynn scoffs, crossing her arms. "Who do you think keeps this place looking like you don't have two rambunctious seven-year-old boys?"

"Where do you think your food comes from? You didn't hire a chef." Brynn grabs her leather crossbody satchel, and walks out of the room. "You hired a nanny."

"Brynn--" Sam chases after her, finding her summoning for the elevator.

"Three meals a day, Sam. I grocery shop, and I cook three well-balanced meals every day. Plus a snack--"

"Baby, I'm sorry--"

"--plus your lunch!" she thumps her pointer finger into his chest.

The elevator dings, the golden doors opening for her to exit. She steps onto the lift, arms still crossed with her hip popped to the side. Her stormy blue eyes pierce daggers into his darkened gaze.

"Mr. Dalton--"

"Don't be like this--"

"Mister. Dalton. You pay me to keep this household running smoothly. The laundry. The dishes. The vacuuming. The mopping," she pushes the button for the first floor, "not for 'that thing I did with my tongue'--"

She mockingly winks at Sam, holding up three fingers, quickly adding a fourth finger as the doors close between them.

ive never anticipated a story so enthusiastically than u releasing the part 4 and after going thru 11k words (which is the most amount of words ive ever read in this entire month), im literally raging rn.

if im gonna be honest, for ur past yandere stories, ive mostly focused and favoured the smut part more but for yamqn, esp with the latest update, for once, ive never felt so invested in reading a story before, the way u convey their feelings without having to write long paragraphs abt unnecessary details... yeah ur my top favorite writer rn.

first and foremost, fuck beomgyu.

beomgyu literally dehumanized her ━ striped her of her basic human rights, chased away her suitors, manipulated her into thinking yn wasn't pretty enough, then use that to his advantage and make yn sell her body to him. although you did put warnings for the nc part, i will admit that part made me wanna throw beomgyu into the deepest depths of hell.

with all his red flags waving high and proud right in my face, if i had to pick the worst one, it would be the fact that he didn't actually care about her at all. he saw her as an object ━ something to be claimed and possessed, something that he expected to obey to his every order. and the fact that he roped his entire family into this just it even sicker, like his parents and sister agreed and encouraged their sickening son's immoral behavior? the apple really doesnt fall far from the tree.

my heart literally broke into pieces when lord taehyun failed his plan like i was abt to throw my pc into the wall when beomgyu mentioned that he would send maids to guard yn's room while he was gone OH speaking of maids.... what they did to yn was equally sick. i understand that they're under his control, but to accept to participate in such a cruel act? do they not have any sense of decency left in them? (just gonna let this slide and close an eye cuz i dont know what went on behind the scenes)

can everyone just please give a pat on the back to lord taehyun cuz DAMN is he committed. honestly if i could i would've just gave him a hug and treat him to the finest things and give him the happiness he deserves. unlike beomgyu, he was SERIOUS about yn like he actually sees her as a human, sees her as a person who he can build a future with and a potential romantic partner. its like the realization that she finally had an opportunity to escape the hellish life she had within the castle beomgyu held her 'captive' in. but then again, the risk of leaving her former life behind, leaving her (ex?) lover behind for a new life that she might get adjusted to with a stranger she knows very little abt (im sorry taehyun) is too much for her to take, so i understood why she hesitated when taehyun asked if she wanted to run away.

anyways i could go on and on but its 1am and i gotta sleep but again, i absolutely loved ur new update!!!! and i look up to u a lot!!!!! im not sure if theres gonna be a part 5... but i hope so! plz dont stress urself out and have a great day ahead mort!!!! (also quite random but can i be 🤓 anon? if it isnt taken?) cheers!!!!

i totally get it. i also mostly focus on the smut when i read stories but when the story grabs my attention. it makes the smut sooooo much better

i don't agree that beomgyu doesn't care for her or that he necessarily thinks of her as an object. I feel like in his own way, he really does love her, but he loves himself more. he'd do anything for her except let her leave him, and he really thinks that he is the best thing for her. she wants someone to provide for her? who better to do it than a prince? who would love her more than he loves her? her family that sold her to him isn't to be trusted to find her a good husband. no other man is good enough for her, especially not taehyun who he believes is cruel and sadistic. he doesn't think of her as an object but he also doesn't trust her to make her own decisions. he thinks that as the man he should be the one protecting and providing for her and he feels he's been doing that all his life and yet she still won't be with him. it's all very selfish but that is beomgyu's core personality trait :')

beomgyu's family share differing sentiments on oc. the father's stance is clear, he thinks she's just a whore for beomgyu. the mother just wants to please her beloved son and doesn't care about oc. wonyoung likes her but her loyalty lies with her brother and she won't go against him to help her

as for the maids, they really have no choice. you think a maid can say no to a prince? they could lose their lives 😂

taehyun has been the perfect knight in shining armor. we've definitely not seen the last of him. but what will he make of oc not being a virgin anymore? will he still want her?

Knowing when enough is enough 

Yesterday I wrote about resetting your life, a lot of times in life we do stupid things and I'm the 1st to raise my hand on this. I do stupid things all the time, I am far from perfect and I tell you all that every day in this blog. Now for me being stupid is not a bad thing, it means we have room to grow, to learn lessons and hopefully change our behavior. 

But sometimes some of us need more time than others, we don't know when to walk away because sometimes we're so stuck in stupid that were like a broken record.

(Sorry, dinosaur reference) going around and around and skipping on that same point until we kick the record player.

Albert Einstein once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results and that's what so many of us do. We stay at the same job that disrespects us and doesn't value us, we stay in the same relationship that we know is hurting us or that we've spoken to them about how we feel and yet they disregard that. We stay in friendships that are no longer working for us, that are one sided or that makes us feel like we're doing all the work and yet we stay.

Why do we stay in all of these places? Is it because we hope that they will change? Because we love these people so much? Or is it because we value our self so little? Why is it that we stay in these unfilling places in our lives? I don't know about everyone else but I know for me I had lost my self esteem after being in a verbal abuse marriage for 24 years. For me any attention was good attention. I was willing to put up with crap, I was willing to ignore the red flags, I was willing to not walk away when I knew I should have a long time ago. For me I needed multiple signs to say this was not it and even then I still stayed.

 I know that many of us are in this boat together, maybe we think we won't find anything better, maybe we are comfortable, maybe it's the lifestyle we are afraid of losing, there are many reasons we keep holding on. Fear is one of the biggest, fear of the unknown, fear of what if? What if I can't find another man or job, what if I'm too old? What if this is the best I can get? So many "what if"s" that we scare ourselves stiff and then we are unable to move.

Unfortunately sometimes the only way to get us unstuck is that it has to come down to being sick and tired. Being so sick and tired that it doesn't matter, you need to get out.  Whether it's about your job, your friendships, your kids, or your relationships, when you get to that point when you're sick and tired of being sick and tired then you're done.

 And to the men out there, I don't know if you know this but once a woman's done. honey there is no going back for that woman.

She has washed her hands of you, she's done and she has walked away for good.

For so many of us it takes us to get to that point before we're like okay it's so over. We all know that there were so many signs along the way before you get to that point of I'm outta here, I'm done but yet we miss those signs. We need to really pay attention to our intuition, to that inner voice, to those red flags because trust and believe there's always going to be the signs for you to see. 

We must say as soon as we see these signs, "I'm not staying around to see the end of this movie, I already know how it ends and I'm not gonna waste my time"

This is what we should be saying and then we should be running like Forrest Gump, run, forrest run! 

We don't need a replay of what happens because we all know how that turns out. How many times do we need to see this movie? How many times do we have to feel unfilled, hurt, unappreciated, unloved to know this is not where I want to be? How many times must we need to make excuses? To say the same things yet nothing changes? Seriously? How many times?

We must lo learn our lessons and move on, we must see the signs and be gone, we must know our self worth and know we deserve better. Forget the fear, step out of faith and know it has to get better than replaying the hurt once again.

So today my friends remember, look out for the signs, listen to your  intuition, know the lesson or learn the lesson and then walk away, run away if you must. Reset your life and know when enough is enough.
