week #11 recommendation: bee
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
▪︎ historical fiction novel ▪︎
there was julia (lindsay mackenzie wallace beaufort-stuart). then there was queenie, and eva. for a little while there was katharina. and there was verity, who wrote truth. and there was nothing.
julie, code name verity, is a coward. out of all the prisoners in the hotel the gestapo have seized, she’s the only one to enter an agreement. she writes for her life—that is, she’ll tell them everything they want to know just as long as she doesn’t die. it’s not as if she could write if she died, though. the plane crash that sent her there dive-bombed maddie, the pilot, onto a different road. but all she can do is wait in agony for word about her best friend through a group of resistors and a nazi cooperator who’s family first to them. a long, late night at the bridge is where the standstill is finally broken—but despite maddie’s broken heart, there’s no way it can end there.
▪︎
okay. in all honesty i think this is one of those books (e.x. song of achilles) that would tear most people apart but have had little effect on me in the moment (maybe i should’ve had rose write this one, hm?). but i can still say, with my whole heart, that the emotions and raw devotion portrayed in this book is real. holy shit is it real. it’s in the iconic, recurring lines and unwavering trust. in the fears shared and planes flown and the wondering wondering wondering. in the split-second decision made for the sake of “i will save you”. but they’ve done their parts. julie has written the truth, maddie has flown the plane. and forever, a part of her is buried in lace and roses, stuck in the climb, unflyable.

what would overlords think if he heard of Eva ?
I would imagine he would find her interesting, but not in the way you think. Whenever I came across Overlord in the IDW comics, he did not fear death. He was cocky, sadistic, and did whatever he wanted without fear of consequence. He probably wouldn't even be annoyed at her reviving bots - he could just kill them all over again for funsies.
Unless she saved his life, he would probably kill her. Even then, I can't imagine someone like Overlord being sentimental and keeping her around for gratitude's sake. He has no use for her, not even as a bargaining chip. BUT I just remembered, he didn't kill Verity the second time he saw her, but instead took her to show her what he was working on with Tarantulas. So maybe...?
Now, in some sadistic scenario where he would torture and kill Megatron, he might want her to revive Megs just to kill him all over again. Other than that, I don't see him thinking much of her beyond brief curiosity.

2023 Reading Roundup (44 books, Predominately Romantasy)
I graduated from university and started my big girl job this year, take a look at what I was reading as I passed these milestones! I read FOURTY FOUR books this year and I’m so proud :)
Vampire Academy Series: Richelle Mead
Vampire Academy, Frost Bite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound, Last Sacrifice
10/10. Comfort books. Love the arc, love the direction. Slow burn mentor/student. Set in modern day. Romantasy.
Dune & Dune: Messiah: Frank Herbert
Dune is a 10/10. Incredibly worldbuilding. Anyone with any interest in sci-fi should read. Messiah went a lot quicker, less complicated and fleshed. 5/10 I didn’t really enjoy it. Maybe I’ll push through one day…
King of Scars Duology: Leigh Bardugo
King of Scars, Rule of Wolves
I love love love Six of Crows, and I didn’t feel like reading Shadow and Bone just yet, so read King of Scars. 7/10 I probably should have read Shadow and Bone but now I probably never will, basically got the gist of it. Didn’t have a lot of background but the story is rly good. Love love love Zoya!!
A Court of Thorns and Roses Series: Sarah J Maas
A Court of Thorns and Roses, a Court of Mist and Fury, a Court of Wrath and Ruin, a Court of Frost and Starlight, a Court of Silver Flames
12/10. Perfect down to the last minute detail. Epic fantasy, worldbuilding that had my jaw on the floor. Must read.
Fourth Wing: Rebecca Yarros
9/10 quick and easy read. Loved the dragons in this one. I’m a sucker for Enemies to Lovers so I basically exactly what i signed up for. Little scared for series though… ahh!
From Blood and Ash Series: Jennifer L. Armentrout
From Blood and Ash, Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, Crown of Gilded Bones, a War of Two Queens, a Soul of Ash and Blood
4/10. First 2 books were really interesting, third one actually totally lost me and in the middle of the fourth I ended up reading all of the Cruel Prince books in the middle of it lol. Determined to not have a DNF this year so I came back, finished it, and read the god-forsaken Soul of Ash and Blood. 0/10 I hated every second of that book. It’s a complete retelling with maybe 2 or 3 chapters that are actually interesting. Yes, I know I read all 5. No, I have no technical regrets. Take that as you will.
The Cruel Prince: Holly Black
The Cruel Prince, the Wicked King, the Queen of Nothing
Good, no spice obvi and super popular but I loved Jude’s character and was obsessed with the politics. Super intriguing I blew through these. 8/10
Verity: Colleen Hoover
6/10, read it in like a day and a half but I don’t rly like thrillers, they scare me lol. It was good tho and my first Colleen Hoover book, not sure if I would read another one but I did really like this one and the ending was super crazy. read it as a palate cleanser after Cruel Prince. I’ve realized if I don’t have a non-high fantasy palate cleanser I fall into a reading slump lol.
Once Upon a Broken Heart Series: Stephanie Garber
Once Upon a Broken Heart, The Ballad of Never After, A Curse for True Love
OUABH is 9/10, honestly such a wonderful book, perfectly captures the hopeless romantic of Eva and allure of Jacks, but TBONA is SHOWSTOPPING!!! 12/10. So amazing, love the storyline, never bored, such good romance it’s the most well written romance I’ve read in a while- screeching halt for ACFTL- I’ve put my thoughts on this blog but it felt so empty compared to the lifeblood in the first 2 books in the series. Definitely worth the read though.
Throne of Glass Series: Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn, Kingdom of Ash
Nothing to be said that’s not already been said. Amazing. I love sprawling epics. Not a ton of romance and tbh I’m not a Rowan girly. Defending Chaol til I die tho. 10/10
Twilight: Stephanie Meyer
6/10. I’ve written about this one but I just felt like it was super juvenile for my tastes, I was expecting to like it more and it was just kinda eh. Needed a little more something something but that is of course a me problem. I just think I am not a big fan of YA anymore.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: V. E. Schwab
Wonderful story, totally lust for life after reading, made me so excited about the ending. I felt like there was so much more to be told which is like exactly how I wanna feel reading a book. 8/10
Divine Rivals: Rebecca Ross
At first I was not rocking with the pacing, I feel like this book could have been a lot longer. But when I finished it I actually was more on board with the speed and it was super sweet. Good found family aspect. 7/10 will for sure be reading the next one.
Plated Prisoner Series: Raven Kennedy
Gild, Glint, Gleam, Glow, Gold
I love love love LOVE these books! Pacing is amazing, you can see exactly how Auren’s trauma affects her character, Malina has gained a fan, just huge fantastic series here. Cannot wait until the last one is out. 10/10
Thanks for reading! Feel free to drop me a book review for 2024! Happy new year everyone!

@atelierlili I’m gonna throw my two cents in here. One because your artwork is amazing! Two because no one should be bullied over art. Art is subjective and if Picasso can draw women cubed then you should be able to paint Katniss whatever color you want.
However, to ground this argument based on real facts, let’s go down this rabbit hole… I’ve been in the fandom for close to 10 years and I’ve seen this pop up like an unwanted penny one too many times!
Because, I am someone of mixed race, I want everybody understand that even though I am Latina, my mom is Afro Latina, my father was of Europe descent, even though he was Puerto Rican. My genealogy has everything from Senegal, Taíno Indian, Spanish (IE Spain), Italian, Irish, and Jewish descent. Me and my siblings, or my siblings and I - have a verity of ranging skin tones- from dark, olive, and white skin. One of my siblings is a redhead with pale skin that burns.
So I have lived in the question pool of ‘what are you?’
There is a scale for skin tones that is used in the beauty industry that determines what kind of makeup you should wear depending on if you have warmer or cooler tones. The problem is that olive of skin tone is both warm and cool and people who have Olive skin tone come from North Africa, the Mediterranean, Middle East, Latin America (including the Caribbean), and Asian countries.
Kim Kardashian, Thandiwe Newton, Eva Mendez, Rihanna, the Duchess Megan, Zoe Saldaña, Michelle Rodriguez, Rosario Dawson, Freida Pinto -(just to name a few) - all of the above have Olive Skin.
Why do I mention this? Because Susan Collins did not write Katniss as tan or white. She does, however describe Katniss and the people of the Seam as having olive skin tone in both of her books, the hunger games, and catching fire. (See Text Below)
hunger games
catching fire
This is intentional. Because the people from the merchant side do not have olive skin tone at all. The merchant side when they come into the seam stick out like a sore thumbs. Suzanne Collins, writes in the hunger games that Katniss’s sister and her mother stick out because they have blonde hair and blue eyes see below
It’s why the movies do such a disservice when making the movies. The perceptions of the people who did not read the books and only watched the movies is skewed. Those who only watched the movies could not understand the true divide in district 12. Literally the merchants stick out because they’re smaller group of people who do not look like the people from the Seam who are numerous. And in the movie you cannot tell who are from the Seam, and who are the merchant. The merchants should be like dandelions in a green field.
And knowing where people with Olive skin tones come from… @atelierlili can make Katniss a woman of color because literally she is a person of color and Suzanne Collins does this specifically because as we know, Katniss is a vivid reminder of a place that President Snow would like to forget. And to have such a significant character, such as Katniss Everdeen represented in literature is so important and it is such a shame that they did not represent her in the movies at all!
This is the second time, this annoying asshole has come to crying/complaining about the skintone of MY Katniss. When it happened the first time, I gave the user the benefit of doubt as Katniss skin tone is only mentioned in the book and in the movies she's portrayed by the pale Jennifer Lawerence. But since this topic crop it's ugly head around again, it's coming off as very racist and woefully unwelcomed, @bethaniagia.
I want to preface this incase someone wants to twist my words, I have nothing against black people and I don't wish to offend anyone when I say my Katniss isn't black. I don't portray her the way I do with the intent to characterize her a person of black descent. Aside from being part Seam and Merchant, Katniss is racially ambiguous. The only canon thing we know from the books is that she has darker skin than those of the merchant class and sliver eyes. Therefore it's within my right to portray her however the fuck I want to portray her. And I portray her as someone as Seam descent.
Now i'm going to gush over MY Katniss because I love her exactly the way she is and no one will convince me otherwise to change her. I love her dark skin, the rich warm hue that's reminiscent of the woods and the forests she loves so dearly. I love how it makes her silver eyes pop and how it makes her favourite colour, green, shimmer off her skin. I love giving her a reddish, warm undertone, indicative of her inner fire. She's our girl on fire, after all.
I love how her darker skin tone is visual indicator off the very real class divide that exists within District 12 and how her relationship with Peeta and her mother and father, display that class CAN be crossed and genuine love can be find despite it all. Katniss holds her identity of Seam close to her. The movies cut it out, like it does many things, but that doesn't mean its no less important, no less meaningful. So if I wish to portray this class divide through her skin tone, I can and I will.
Anyway, @bethaniagia, I just want to say your behaviour is very not cool and its, quite plainly, shitty community/fandom etiquette and behaviour. I take time out of my day to share and create my silly drawings of Miss Katniss Everdeen kissing her boyfriend. If you don't like it, block and turn the other cheek. This kind of attitude KILLS engagement and fun in any community. It can cripple the the motivation to share work with the fandom. I don't give a shit. I do what I want. But I KNOW there are writers and artists that keep thier work to themselves because they're worried about blacklash from people like you.
Now, I don't expect you to give it nor do I expect you to read to the end of this post, but I'd like an apology, otherwise, I'll be blocking you at the end of the week. I'd like to keep this up long enough for you to read it. :)

I'm so disappointed that they've killed off Verity!
Me too! She's been a great character and I can only hope that it was Eva's decision to leave and she wasn't axed.
I suppose we should have seen it coming, really. Verity knew that Bobby had left Sylver to die and the show clearly aren't ready to end his story yet. Therefore, Verity was sacrificed. Hollyoaks have form for this, after all.
Such a shame, and a waste of a great character and actress.

quarantine asks: 19, 22, 29, 31, 36, 47? :)
hi eva!!
19. That book you were forced to read for class but actually ended up enjoying?
We had to read this book in Dutch called Dubbelspel which is a very long book about these four men who play dominos every Sunday and during one particular game, their lives completely unravel and it’s just set during that one game. It’s like 600 pages and I hated that I had to read it but once I got into it I just couldn’t put it down because it was so much fun and all the drama that came out of it was just so entertaining and I ended up finishing it in a day
22. What was your “phase when you were younger? (i.e., Mythology Nerd, Horse Girl, Space Geek, etc)
I was def a greek mythology nerd
29. Who’s your go-to musical artist when you’re feeling upbeat?
ah there’s so many but usually DaVido, Mumford & Sons, or Janelle Monae
31. What’s that one outfit in your closet you never get the chance to wear but want to?
I have this dress that has a cape/cloak like sown into it? it looks kinda like this but in black but it’s basically too fancy/cool for like, official work things or funerals but it’s not fancy enough for formal events so I never get to wear it
36. Pick a superhero sidekick to hang out with
Maria Hill. is she a sidekick? idc. i love her.
47. How do you top your ice cream?
with nothing! i love ice cream as is, usually in a cone :D

send me a quarantine ask

POV? anything you're working on at the moment :3
ah sweet nonnie
POV — something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective
i am loving this game, others feel free to hop on my inbox and ask
I was sorely tempted to do something from THYP – there’s so much material there, but if i go down that rabbit hole rn i might end up doing an entire B-Side about it. My lazy side was sorely tempted to do something from sidereal that I’d already done, because there are huge swathes that were originally Steeb POV that are now Bork POV.
instead I did something ELSE from sidereal: let’s call this “Verity’s Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day”
Everyone had assumed that the lead curator would take handle the private tour, maybe even the director? I mean, it’s Captain America, right? You don’t just keep Captain America waiting at the National Portrait Gallery. Right? But now it’s fifteen minutes later, and no one has turned up to do it, and he is still waiting in there. Finally, Karen calls someone higher up, who says, basically: “I don’t have time for that, get one of the docents to do it.”
And everyone now understands that this is going to go one of two ways:
1) Perfectly: Captain Rogers is totally happy with the exhibit, which gets to stay open, and the director and the curator fight over who takes credit for that.
or
2) As expected: Captain Rogers hates it so the gallery has to close their most popular exhibit, and the director and the curator agree to blame the docent who walked him through it.
The docents do rock paper scissors.
Verity loses.
As she walks to her certain doom, she tries very hard not to think about what she’s going to tell her roommates/soulmates when she gets fired. Sorry guys, I disappointed America and now I’m unemployed. How will she explain that in future job interviews? I got fired because of a national icon – yeah, exactly like Lady Liberty. How will she explain it to her mother?
Jesus.
Okay, just breathe. It won’t be that bad.
She comes around the corner and boom. There he is. Her first impression is, just… wow. He really does look like that.
Her second impression is: okay, well, he actually looks significantly less intimidating and iconic with his plaid shirt tucked into his khaki pants. It doesn’t do much to hide that shoulder-waist ratio, but it does make him look like…
Well, in tenth grade Verity’s best friend/soulmate, Aaron, had grown four inches and transformed virtually overnight into the cuddly adonis she now lives with – but for that first year, he kept wearing his old baggy nerd t shirts and weird dad jeans and like – it worked on Verity, obviously, but…
This reminds her of that, is all.
and actually, weirdly, her third impression is that he looks kind of smaller than she expected? He’s got his fist over his mouth and his other arm tucked around his ribs and those big shoulders all hunched in, and yeah, he’s taller than her by at least a foot, but –
Look. There’s a lot of negative space in the exhibit, and that’s on purpose. The Howling Commandos, Peggy Carter – they were larger than life characters. There’s a deliberate dissonance in having them memorialized like this: in plain pen-and-ink sketch, on notebook-sized paper. Verity always liked it – the sketches are so lively it’s like they jump off the page to fill the voids around them.
But it’s a little weird, how small Captain America looks, compared to all that empty space.
She wonders how long he’s been staring at the pictures and then kicks herself. It’s been twenty minutes, duh.
She screws up every scrap of courage and every ounce of calm and says: “Captain Rogers?”
read the rest on ao3 with ART by @verbalatte
#sidereal#great now i want to write a ficlet where verity has wine and bitching dates with eva and lorraine
