Can you... Can you guys imagine. Get in the Water. Poseidon is MAD happy to finally get Odysseus. Get in the Water, Odysseus. Or I will DROWN your Ithaca, or I will GOUGE your son's eyes. Odysseus answers, begs. What else can he do? It's Been Ten Years, they are both hurting from loses. Why can't they stop and just... go home. Finally, finally get to the home that is so close.
But No. The god says "Die". The god sends waves, sends him under. Ruthlessness is Mercy, he said before. He will not let Odysseus get away again. There is no escaping god of the sea now, not so deep in the ocean. Odysseus can hear Polites, can hear Eurylochous, can hear his mother. All of his comrades are Waiting, Waiting, Waiting. He can't let go but he must. They are Waiting. But then something unlike the sound of trumpets - crashing waves - resonates within him. A beat like his heart but getting stronger, getting more powerful. His chest is vibrating with it when he finally hears the tick-ticking, so familiar yet foreign. Then, a voice shakes his very being. "I was promised blood." Godly wrath fills him and suddenly Ares' instruments are all he can hear, followed closely by his soldiers' vengeful cry.

okay this is driving me nuts, and maybe im reading this in the wrong direction, but i need this out of my brain so. lets talk about the tragedy of Euryloches in Mutiny and Thunder Bringer
E: But here's where we found all these cows to hunt / Right in front / And hunger is so heavy
O: Please don't tell me you're about to do what I think you'll do
Euryloches, pointing at the statue of apollo: wow. how strange these cows came from literally right here in front of this shrine, what a coincidence.
and Odysseus immediately is horrified, but Euryloches doesn't ask for clarification on why. He remembers Polyphemus too.
E: Ody, we're never gonna get to make it home / You know it's true
Euryloches wants to rest and ease the weight of his burdens, but they only grow. Odysseus' betrayal means the men's lives rest on his shoulders and their hunger is his responsibility, and he doesn't want it.
O: But if you kill his cattle, who knows what he'll send / This is the home of the Sun God
E: I'm tired, my friend
thats. a response! Very healthy and Definitely Not Incredibly Concerning!
O+E: How much longer must I go about / Eurylochus / My life like this when people die like this?
so after dinging several lines of red flags and ignoring his friend's attempts to reach out to him, Euryloches sings the line that has thus preceded great and terrible sacrifice and kills the cow
E: I'm just a man
and its not until Odysseus says
O: You've doomed us all, Eurylochus
that he falters. and then, I could be wrong, but I don't believe he joins the rowing chorus.
and then Euryloches makes a mistake. because in his desire to rest and be able to trust his friend/captain/brother to do the right thing, he reaches out for help and cedes his power back to Odysseus.
E: Captain?
so. Eurylochus planned to sacrifice himself to the sun god's anger in order to feed the crew, but unlike Odysseus, who has regularly dealt with the gods and knows how little they care for human life versus teaching lessons, he underestimates their callous disregard.
Zeus, truly the king of this pantheon, holds the whole crew to account, and doesn't acknowledge Eurylochus' fleeting authority in that decision ("Captain?"), but instead holds Odysseus responsible for his failure to control and provide for his men.
Z: Enlighten me, King of Ithaca / Since hunger was far too great / I wonder who'd take the weight of the damned / And suffer a gruesome fate
Euryloches, knows what Odysseus will choose ("You miss your wife so bad you trade the lives of your own crew"), but he begs anyways, no longer towards the god he intended to barter with, but for his friend/captain/brother to be who the crew needs, the captain he was willing to be, and Odysseus turns away from him.
E: But we'll die
O: I know

I’ve been losing my mind about The Ocean Saga from Epic:The Musical for like a couple days (weeks) and I have to say there’s a couple things I especially love
In “Keep Your Friends Close” Odysseus works so god damn hard to make sure no one can fuck up his chance to get back to his family. He dispels the treasure rumours immediately, tells the crew it’s the storm trapped in the bag, and still stays awake for NINE DAYS to make sure no one touches it.
Despite that, when he falls asleep and the bag is opened, the crew opens it and unleashes the storm. You can HEAR his desperation in the “NO” and yet and YET he focuses on the situation. “Help me close the bag!” “But sir it’s too late!” “We can keep whatever wind it left to use another day, COME ON!”
Despite the fact that these people betrayed them and they might all die he still pushes it aside to make sure they survive before he does anything else. Beyond that, he trusts them to help him, or at least, trusts in their desire to be alive
Also if someone fucked up the journey that badly and I tried to fix it and they’re like UHHHH ITS TOO LATE I’d shove that bitch overboard and be like anyone else want to be fatalist??? No??? Get the fuck to work
Also “OOOODYSSEUS OF ITHACAAAA” like a wrestler was amazing
And Poseidon being like “apologise for hurting my son and I’ll let you go alive” and Odysseus, gaslighter extraordinaire, said okay but have you considered I didn’t wanna hurt him and didn’t mean it
“We’re in the home of the wind god!” “You don’t know for sure-” “how many floating islands have you seen before?” We love a bitch with an attitude
“Eurylochous grab the harpoons- as many as you can find” “what do you have in mind?” “We’re gonna shoot for the sky” “WHAT?”
“Any last words?” “ALL I GOTTA DO IS OPEN THIS BAG” “WHAT-“ KING I LOVE YOU AND YOUR FUCKING SCHEMES
and I’m so obsessed with the music the music of this saga has been playing in my head on a LOOP I’m frothing at the mouth over it

Guys, Mr Jorge supports out delusions, he supports our love for Eurylochous, this is the best day of my life--
youtube
Maybe I just missed it but I didn’t see this video shared here yet. And it has me!! So excited!!!
Jay reveals that he has a whole backstory and lore for Eurylochus in his head, saying he’d love to get it out somehow, maybe even in a short prequel saga for Eurylochus.
Even if it doesn’t actually end up coming in the form of a saga, the thought of getting Eurylochus lore at all has me pumped. He’s one of my favorite characters and I’d love to know more about him and what’s canon to Epic.

I have thoughts about the wind bag in epic the musical...
Hear me out!
In the original myth, Odysseus was kinda a dick and had a big ego. He looked down on his crew and other people, mainly because of his great intelligence. When they got the wind bag, he didn't tell anyone what was in it. No warnings, no trust, nothing! So it made sense why his crew opened the bag. They had nothing to go off of, no trust from their king- who even told them that he doesn't HAVE to tell them what's in it because he's superior to them.
In the musical, however, Jorge is painting a more sympathetic- while still troubled, hero. His relationship with Eurylochus in particular and Eurylochus' betrayal is what I think needs more work. As is, either Eury is a total bitch OR there's no logical reason for him to have betrayed Odysseus and therefore a plot hole.
I for one, enjoy the relationship they have and the drama of both of their betrayals- and they only work that well because we're supposed to 'like' (or at least understand) both characters. So for the sake of that I want to argue that Eury was simply a victim of a plot hole and not just being a bad person.
I had a whole hour long debate arguing for Eurylochus' honor and I came to the conclusion that he really didn't have a good reason in canon to open the wind bag.
I of course argued that he noticed Odysseus cracking under the pressure of losing Polites and the guidance of Athena, and that as his friend, brother in law, and second in command, he was concerned and voiced his doubts. Him and Ody argued in 'Luck Runs Out' and that was a breaking point for their relationship where Eury felt like his voice was being silenced and he wasn't trusted anymore. BUT, my boyfriend made a good counter argument; at this point, nobody knew Odysseus had fucked up by giving the Cyclops his name, so in the eyes of his crew he hadn't made a single big mistake. At every other point, Eurylochus has listened to Odysseus' orders and Odysseus has every right to expect some faith from the (almost) 600 men he'd managed to keep alive through a ten year war.
I digress, that argument was still very important for them and on both sides I think they're right in their own ways. I don't want to take away from that. But why would Eurylochus open the wind bag when, in this iteration, he was told directly from Odysseus what was in it? You could argue that argument broke his trust, but I don't know... They've known each other since they were kids, they're literally related (Eurylochus is married to Ody's sister)! Was it suspicious that Odysseus wouldn't part with the bag? A little, but not enough I think that Eurylochus would directly betray his brother, especially after just losing Polites and being vocally upset about it. PLUS, it was Eurylochus who was arguing about how dangerous the gods are! Why would he open a bag that Odysseus got from a God, that he was TOLD has the storm inside??
Makes no sense narratively for his character🙅‍♂️
And the narrative solution to this is as simple as a couple of lines being added to the song "Keep Your Friends Close". We could take this two ways:
One, Aeolus tells Odysseus that the "catch" is that he can't tell anyone what's in the bag. It would keep to the original story where Odysseus doesn't tell his crew what's in the bag, sparking distrust, but still keep Odysseus a sympathetic character. It would also give Eurylochus a reason to open the bag. Either he caves to the pressure of the crew, all desperate to know what's in this bag that their captain refuses to tell them about, OR he's just festering from the argument still and being told by Odysseus that not even he, his second in command, can know what's in the bag becomes the last straw. Because at that point, at least to Eurylochus, it's clear Odysseus doesn't trust him, so why should he give Odysseus his trust in return?
Or two, a similar route would be to play into Odysseus' grief and paranoia piling up and have him refuse Eurylochus. A simple line, Odysseus has been awake for multiple days straight and his now closest friend, asks to watch the bag for him so he can rest. Odysseus, so close to home and drowning in exhaustion, both mental and physical, snaps and refuses his second in command- causing a rift. The same thing occurs, with Eurylochus still shaken from their argument, now met with an Odysseus who doesn't trust him and yet demands full trust back.
Either way, Eurylochus now has a reason to open the bag that's at least plausible from his point of view and it wouldn't require more than an additional two or three lines of dialogue added to the song.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk

this is going to have me on my hands and knees dry heaving
the way they're literally just kids trying not to fall apart by holding each other together and oh God my bleeding heart
[*pats Odysseus's head* This bean can fit so many emotions in him] Odysseus slammed his bedroom door, rattling the pieces on his chessboard and the writing utensils on his desk. He paced the room, trying to calm himself down, but his chest felt tight, and his hands shook. A lump started to form in his throat, and tears began to collect in his eyes. He shouldn’t cry. He can’t cry! There was no reason to break over something he couldn’t change.
But he couldn’t help it. Odysseus sank to the floor, his emotions crashing into him as he curled into himself.
Odysseus heard a knock at the door, but he stayed quiet. He thought if he didn’t answer, whoever it was would leave.
“Odysseus? Are you ok?”
It was Polites. Odysseus immediately felt his throat tighten in guilt. He pushed him. He pushed his best friend. Odysseus could have hurt him! Why was Polites here? How could Polites be so stubborn to forgive anyone no matter what? He shouldn’t have to. Odysseus felt like he didn’t deserve Polites’s forgiveness so quickly.
“Go away,” Odysseus replied.
He felt the pang of embarrassment. His voice sounded weak and strained. It would be obvious to anyone that he was crying.
“We’re coming in anyway, alright?”
Odysseus looked at the floor as the door creaked open. He regretted not locking it as Polites and Eurylochus entered and sat beside Odysseus.
“I told you to go away.”
“We’re not going to leave you,” Eurylochus said.
“It’s not good to be alone when you’re this upset. You’re so out of it you’re shaking!” Polites added, putting a hand on Odysseus’s shoulder.  “I’m sorry…” Odysseus whispered.
Polites tilted his head. “For what?”
“I shouldn’t have pushed you like that,” Odysseus said, his voice breaking, “Everything these last few days was too much, and it all felt like it was crashing in on me, and I just… I don’t like her like that.”
“And that’s okay,” Polites said as he put his arms around Odysseus, “It’s no good bottling your emotions like that, alright? You have to tell us what’s wrong if something doesn’t seem right so we can help you.”
“We’re here for you, Odysseus,” Eurylochus said, “We’ll listen.”
“And we won’t think any less of you if you tell us how you feel. You’re our brother, Odysseus. We care about you.”
Odysseus buried his head in Polites’s shoulder and allowed himself to fully let go. He wrapped his arms around Polites tightly, and Polites held him close as he sobbed. Odysseus felt Eurylochus hug him from behind, and the little prince counted himself lucky to have such good friends. He turned into a blubbering mess, barely able to get out words of appreciation between the hiccups and sobs. Polites and Eurylochus held him regardless until Odysseus could pull himself together.

!!epic fic idea!!
Lee!polites? Ler!ship crew, euryloches, or odysseus?
Good friends
🎂: epic the musical
🧁: Polites
🍫:Eurylochus, Odysseus
Summary: Polites has a bit of a… problem. And he’s too embarrassed to say it out loud. Of course, his friends find out anyway, and decide to help him out.
A/N: thank youuu! Normally I would request a scenario but I already had one in mind for this so you lucked out. We love Lee!Polites 💕. This is pretty dialogue heavy, so I hope who’s talking when is clear, and the story is as well. I also don’t really like the title but whatever. ENJOY! >:3
Good friends
Polites woke up.
Aaanddd… immediately knew that it was gonna be a long day. There was a buzzing, fluttery feeling under his skin, and a nagging desire settled in his chest.
A lee mood.
He’s had them before. And it always makes the day seem significantly longer. Of course, he could just ask, but that’s so embarrassing!
And, in addition, it’s not easy to hide. He knows that if his friends find out they will tease him relentlessly. Not a very fun experience.
So, yeah, he tries to hide it with his life.
He sighed and got out of bed, it’s no excuse to miss work. He tried to ignore the fantasies flashing through his head.
“Hey captain!” He tried to act normal. This is fine. He’s fine. Nothing is different. But, apparently, he was having an off day. Because whereas usually he can go fairly unnoticed, Odysseus immediately knew something was up.
Odysseus tried not to show the suspicion in his face. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but Polites was.. off. He was… I don’t know, restless? He looked like he couldn’t sit still.
“Polites. How are you today?”
“I’m well! You?”
He wasn’t lying. (Polites was a horrible liar.) so it wasn’t something that was bothering him..hmm.
“I’m good as well.”
“I’m glad. Any tasks for me today or just the usual routine?”
“Ah, nothing special today.”
Odysseus also noticed he was gesturing with his arms less, as if nervous to expose himself. Eurylochus walked up.
“Hey there. mornin’”
“Eurylochus. You slept well?”
“Eh, I’ve had better.” Eurylochus also immediately noticed Polites was off. He kept getting distracted mid conversation.
“Ah, sorry to hear that!” Polites responded, chipper as ever despite his… off-ness.
“I’ll be alright.”
“Okay, well, I’m gonna go start work, see you two later!” And Polites walked away.
Odysseus turned to Eurylochus once he was sure that Polites was out of earshot.
“Does Polites seem off to you?”
“Oh, absolutely. Glad it’s not just me.”
“Oh yeah, not just you. Something is definitely going on. The question is what? He isn’t upset.”
“Yeah, he doesn’t seem like he’s sad or something. We should keep our eyes on him and see what we can gather.”
So they did. Over the course of the morning, they watched him. They noticed that he was kind of.. giggly? And he also seemed to get flustered for seemingly no reason occasionally. He also seemed extra responsive to touch, just brushing his side gently would make him jump.
They eventually put the puzzle pieces together. Or, well, Odysseus did, being the smart man he is. He pulled Eurylochus off to the side to inform him and make a bit of a plan.
“Captain? What is it?”
“I know what’s up with Polites.”
“You do? What is it?”
“He’s in a lee mood.”
Realization dawned on Eurylochus’ face. “Ooohhh, that makes sense.”
“Mhmm. And I have an idea.”
“Go ahead.”
Later, lunch was served, and after everyone ate, Odysseus walked up to Polites.
“Hey, Polites?”
“Oh, hey Ody! What’s up?”
“You’re not in trouble or anything, but can you see me in my office?”
“Oh, yeah, sure!” Polites mind was racing. If he wasn’t in trouble, what was it? Did they find out?? The very idea flustered him to no end. But he followed his best friend to his office nonetheless.
He was surprised to see Eurylochus there as well.
“Oh? Eurylochus is here?”
“Yes, I am. Hi Polites.”
“Hi! What’s up?”
The other two in the room smirked a bit.
“Oh, nothing, I just noticed your little…. Problem.”
Polites mind raced once more. ‘Wait, actually? They actually know? Oh gods..’
“Oh?”
“Yes, yes. We noticed that you’re in a lee mood, dear friend.”
Eurylochus chimed in. “And what kind of friends would we be if we didn’t help you out?”
‘Oh my gods, is this actually happening right now?’ Polites thought to himself, excited and nervous and flustered all at once.
Odysseus and Eurylochus walked up to their friend, and Eurylochus took his arms in one hand and put them above his head. Polites started blushing from fluster and embarrassment, and nearly started giggling from anticipation.
“Let’s get these out of the way, hmm?” Eurylochus’ voice held an unusual teasing lilt, only adding to Polites’ embarrassment.
“Oh gods..”
“What’s wrong? Embarrassed?” Odysseus asked, teasing his friend even further. Then he placed a hand gently on his side, not actually tickling yet, just teasing.
This broke Polites into anticipatory giggles.
“Ohoho nohoho…”
“Aww, laughing already? I haven’t even started yet~”
“Ohohody! Stohohop teheasing!”
“Oh, you want me to stop teasing, hmm? You want me to just start already?”
Polites groaned in embarrassment through his giggles. “Yehehehes!”
“Aww, okay, I guess I’ll have mercy~” Without any further words, Odysseus started to scribble against Polites’ sides, making the other’s giggles grow fuller.
“Ehehehehehe! Ohohody!”
“Whaaaaat? I thought this is what you wanted?”
Polites just groaned again.
“Oh, don’t worry, I know how contradictory the brain can be when it comes to this. You love it, yet your mind is screaming at you to make it stop~”
Polites blushed even further, still giggling like a madman. Eurylochus took his free hand and started to scratch gently at his tummy.
“Ehehehe, Euhuhurylohohochus! Nohohot thehere!”
“Oh? Not here? Not this little tummy right here? But you love this spot~”
His friends wanted to kill him. He was so flustered that he felt like he might die. And their constant teasing was not helping.
“Tickle tickle tickle~ look at how happy you are~”
“Ohohody! Stohohop!”
“Stop what? Stop tickling you? Cause we both know you don’t want that~”
“Stohohop teheheheasing!”
“Aww, why? Is the little lee gettin’ all flustered~?”
“Eheheheh Ohohody!” He didn’t say it aloud, but Polites was having an absolute blast. He’s, he was embarrassed to all Hades, but it was so much fun.
“That’s my name, don’t wear it out.”
Eurylochus decided to chime in again, still scratching and digging at his friend’s worst spot.
“What’s the matter, Pol? Too ticklish~?”
“Ehehehehehehe nohohot yohou tohohoo! Ahahahaha!” Polites bouncy, happy giggles filled the room, emanating a contagious joy that made the other two parties smile too.
“Aww, you’re just so downright precious~”
“Ehehehehehe nohoho ihim nohohot!”
“Yes you are, don’t try to deny it~ I mean, just look at you! Your smile is adorable~ and don’t even get me started on those sweet giggles.”
“Eehahahaha guhuhuys stohohop!”
“Why should we? You’re clearly enjoying yourself~”
Polites was so red he could be mistaken for a tomato at this point. This was unbearable and amazing and so, so flustering. He couldn’t take it! And yet he loved every second.
Part of him actually did want it to stop, so the pleas weren’t exactly In-genuine, but they weren’t fully genuine either. It’s confusing.
“Stohohop! Guhuhuys! Ehehehehehe!”
“How bout this, you admit you’re adorable and we’ll stop~”
“W-whahahahahat?!”
“You hear him. Tell us that you’re precious and we’ll let you go~ just three simple words.”
“Ehehehehe nohoho wahahahay!”
“Oh, so you’re not ready for us to stop yet? That’s okay, we can keep going until you’re done.”
Polite continued to giggle and squirm and blush so warm it felt like his face was on fire. But it wasn’t to the point where he was desperate. He could hold out a little longer.
“Ehehehehehe guhuhuys plehehehease!”
“You know what you have to do~”
As much fun as he was having, it was quickly getting to a point of desperation, so Polites caved.
“Fihihine! Yohohou wihin! Ihi’m cuhuhute!”
The other two immediately let up, Eurylochus letting go of his arms. “See, now was that so hard~”
“Ugh, youhou guys are mean..” Polites was still blushing furiously, a few small remaining giggles slipping into his speech.
“You know you loved it.”
“Ughhhhhhhh”
Odysseus ruffled his hair. “You’ll be fine.”
Just as they were all about to disperse, Polites decided to say one last thing.
“Uh- thank you.”
“No problem, Friend. Glad you had fun. I know I did.”
Then they separated and went about their usual day, all as if it had never happened. And Polites could confidently say that he felt a lot better. Maybe today wasn’t so bad after all.

During Mutiny, Eurylochous says
"Ody, we're never gonna make it home"
And obviously, he was talking about the crew and Odysseus.
But what if he wasn't? That line can also be read as Eurylochous telling Odysseus that even if he gets home, the crew never will. Because he knows that Odysseus won't let anything, not even his own crew, get in the way of seeing his wife again.

The Passing of the Torch: Odysseus and Eurylochus
Well there's a tragic moment in Epic the Musical where, depending on the animatics used, Euryloches is told to pass out Lit Torches to the crew as they unknowingly enter the lair of Scylla. Tricked into choosing who gets sacrificed by Odysseus, perhaps as punishment for opening the bag of winds at the behest of the crew in a earlier saga.
Only for Euryloches to drop his torch and pull his weapon as he tries desperately to save his comrades from the twisted Nymph, and a crew-mate picks up his dropped torch because of Odyssus's orders as they entered. Or running to try and save his comrades as he finally pieces together what is happening in the chaos and fails to save any of them despite his best efforts.
It's a very very important moment that I feel gets really overlooked. Because it signifies the moment where Odysseus's and Eurylochus's parallel character developments clash bringing to the events of the song "Mutiny".
Where Eurylochus fights Odysseus and is saved by the crew who sees which of their leaders still has their best interests at heart.
Eurylochus becomes the leader of the crew, saves the life of Odysseus, and they sail for the first island they can find. Where in their hopeless situation, where they are starving to death, and no other food can be found they slay a sacred Cow of the sun god (Helios not Apollo).
Then when Zeus comes into the scene demanding that Odysseus choose between saving himself, or his crew, mocking him and giving visions of Penelope pushing him in the direction he wants. . .Odysseus chooses.
And in the Official animatic from the Livestream. . .Eurylochus >!charges Odysseus alongside the rest of the crew, when their friend proves for one last final time that he no longer holds their safety in his regards. After this one last betrayal they try the only thing they can. Kill him so that the crew will live. !<
Odysseus symbolically patched the torch to Eurylochus in the cavern of Scylla, Eurylochus officially took the torch shortly after in the song mutiny(as signified by the backing of the crew and his usage of Odysseus's own guitars), and in "Thunder-Bringer" Zeus makes Odysseus acknowledge the passing of the torch that he is no longer the crew's captain. . . and that his life and goal of seeing his wife again is worth more then all of their's.
Even as cautious pragmatic Eurylochus, charges forward in an attempt to defy Odysseus and the Thunder-Bringer, to save his crew and friends or at the least avenge them before it's too late.
It's a fantastic series of moments that I think get lost in the discussion. The passing of the Torch, both symbolic and literal. Of Odysseus forced to face the consequences of his choices once more, of Eurylochus living up to the torch he now carries. A King and a Captain. A Monster and a Man.
Though depending on the animatic this final moment does change. In some Eurylochus is the only one who doesn't charge Odysseus and he tearfully accepts his fate as the rest of the crew charges Odysseus with spears.!< !In others he leads the charge but pushes Odysseus out of the path of the Lightning Zeus throws, even as the rest of the crew tries to kill Odysseus, leading him to be the only survivor.
I know that Eurylochus and Odysseus are rather. . .controversial characters for certain aspects of conversations around them, and I note that this is not a condemnation either party not in this post necessarily.
Just that I think this series of fantastic moments are often lost in the sauce of people trying to pass around blame and guilt and who was ultimately at fault.
