The more difficult sell would be to the Americans. Why should they want us? We’re an economic basket case and, though strategically well-placed as a bridge between North America and Europe, we’re already a reliable military and diplomatic ally. However, we do have the City of London, the world’s number two location on the Global Financial Centres Index, and a tidy stockpile of nuclear weapons, plus Washington would gain some potentially useful little dots on the map like the Falklands, the Caymans, Gibraltar and a couple of military bases in Cyprus. (The Chagos Islands, not so much.)
We have some oil, which a future Republican administration would probably be up for drilling, and heaps of wind power, which the Democrats would be more enthusiastic about. We also have Northern Ireland and what better way for the United States to pursue its keen interest in Irish affairs than by sharing an island and a border. America would gain Scotland, where roughly 96 per cent of them claim to come from, and while as a US state Britain would be a republic, the royal family could be retained for tourism, kitsch marketing and Netflix licensing purposes. Wales would come as part of the package but they manage fine with one Alabama so a second shouldn’t be all that much trouble.
In many ways, the UK would be the ultimate prize for the United States. How many former empires apply to become part of their former colonies? It would be like winning the revolutionary war all over again, and this time we won’t come back thirty years later and burn down the White House.

LongDistance!Series - Part One: Melina - Manny x Reader

In the months that follow more postcards appear on Manny’s fridge, almost more than he can count because you’re bouncing around from country to country, city to city documenting Tattoo Expos throughout Europe.
Barcelona, Lisbon, Munich, Berlin, Paris, Versailles, Vienna.
You’re getting busier and busier these days and Manny can’t help but wonder when you’ll eventually stop to take a breath.
The two of you have been together almost six months and speak daily over Whatsapp through messages, voice notes or video calls. You send the occasional care package from whichever country you’re visiting, beers from Germany, wine from Spain that he’d put aside for when you returned, a gourmet food hamper from France. He’d shared that with his daughter Melina, one evening. The two of them had dressed in striped shirts with matching berets when they sat down and sampled the delicacies.
“Where did this come from?” She’d asked him as he’d set the wicker basket it had arrived in on the kitchen table.
“My friend sent it.” He tells her as they sample some of the salted butter caramel. “She travels all over the world taking pictures of people’s bodyart. Sometimes she sends me things so I can get a taste of the country she’s in.”
“Can I meet her?” Melina had asked.
He’d paused then because although it’s been on his mind recently, but he hasn’t actually broached the topic. There hasn’t been a woman in his life since his ex-Samantha. He’s fucked other women, girls who hung out at the bar, but he’s never brought them home. The truth is he knows it’s not him that they want, it’s the patch. There’s prestige that comes with being acquainted with the President of the club; it gives a woman status. He doesn’t want to bring a person like that into Melina’s world. His daughter is the most precious thing in his life, he doesn’t want her to be tainted by the darker aspects of his existence. She needs better role models in her life than the women who hang around the club and fuck their way up the hierarchy.
“She’s very far away.” He tells her as he snags a handful of coconut popcorn. “Somewhere called Versailles in France.”
He’d hoped that was the end of it before Melina picked up his cellphone and reminded him how video chat worked. His daughter was too smart for her own good and for his.
It’s later that night when Melina’s gone home that he calls you. It’s past midnight in Yuma, which makes it eight am your time. You’re still in your pyjamas, a pretty silk set that he wishes he was there to help you take off. He imagines his fingertips trailing over the thin strap before he guides it down your shoulders.
“My daughter wants to meet you.” He tells you as he sits with his back against the headboard, the room illuminated by the light from his lamp.
“Is that what you want?” You ask him, cradling a mug of coffee to your chest.
He tips his head back against the wall for a second before considering his next words carefully.
“I think this…” He says gesturing between the phone and himself. “…would be a good introduction, a way of testing the waters moving forward. I’ve spoken to Sam and she’s cool with it.”
He’d had the conversation while Melina was packing up her stuff. Once she’d learned you weren’t one of the club girls she had warmed to the idea significantly, he’d shown her some of your pictures and a couple of your articles.
“The two of you getting serious?” She’d asked in that New York drawl of hers and he hadn’t been able to keep the edges of his mouth from twitching up.
Sam can read every single one of his tells. They’ve known each other for over a decade, she’s seen him at his worst and at his best. It’s the first time she’s seen that look on his face in a while and she’s glad that he’s finally focusing on something that isn’t the club or Melina, that he’s allowing himself to be happy.
“Well, she’s successful, she’s smart, she travels the world. I think you could do a lot worse.” She teases him before nudging his shoulder with her own. “At the very least Melina meets an interesting person.”
He’s taken that on board before he’d called you. Even if this thing between the two of you didn’t work out, you can give his daughter insight into another world, one that she won’t get to see here in Yuma.
“If Sam’s signed off and it’s cool with you then I would love to meet her.” You tell him with a smile before taking a sip from your coffee cup. “However, let’s actually schedule a call so that I’m wearing something a little more appropriate when I meet your daughter.”
“I don’t know Mami, that looks pretty appropriate to me right now.” He says, biting his lower lip as the silk clings to your chest. You aren’t wearing a bra, and he can see the dark shape of your nipples through the fabric. “Maybe you could show me a little more.”
You laugh before setting your coffee cup down on the nightstand. You put the phone in the little wooden stand you usually use for when your video calls with Manny get a little risqué.
“So, tell me Manny,” You say as your thumbs hook underneath the straps of your camisole, drawing them down just a little. “What would you like to see first?”

Thanks for sharing! I prefer traveling solo for the same reasons you do! :) Do you happen to know any websites or tricks for doing it cheaply? All the budget traveling sites I see package their deals per person based on double occupancy rooms as the default, so being a single traveler typically doubles the price. :/ Hope you have yourself an awesome trip!
Well, I started traveling on my own before the bulk of the internet existed, so I've always just homebrewed it. I don't think I've ever done a package tour. I know people who have, and really enjoyed it as a struggle-free way to see the world, but I tend to have specific and unusual goals. I do know that there is a whole culture of couchsurfing -- I knew someone who belonged to a couchsurfing website and traveled Europe that way for very cheap -- but I've never investigated it.
Usually when I'm going somewhere I have an idea of something I want to see, so that's where I start -- where's the zoo/museum/restaurant I want to visit? Can I stay near there cheaply? If not, where can I stay within transit access? Once I have housing sorted I look at what else is around where I'm staying and the places I already want to go, and I build an agenda from there.
The only site I use for direct tourism research (as opposed to like, Google Maps or local transit sites) is Atlas Obscura, which has an index by region of cool stuff to do. I look at Atlas Obscura to see if there's anything I shouldn't miss, and I also often google stuff like "[region] local foods" or "[region] art museums" or whatnot. Because I don't like driving, I study public transit in the area using Maps, although lately I don't worry as much about that as long as the area I'm traveling to has cabs/rideshare.
The first time I visited Boston, when I was 19, I had heard about the Great Molasses Flood, and I'd read that the best place to see where it happened is from Copp's Hill Burial Ground on top of a hill in the North End. That also sounded cool, and I scheduled a day to start at Copp's Hill and follow the Freedom Trail south afterward (this also ultimately involved me nearly getting arrested for breaking into a cemetery, but I got away). Following the Freedom Trail led me to some unexpected sights too, like the Holocaust Memorial north of Fanieul Hall. I derailed a portion of my morning to explore that, which was fine, I didn't really need to see the entire Freedom Trail and I picked it back up again later.
So for me solo travel is equal parts "Well, I know what I want to see" and the serendipity of discovery. There are a couple of days on the Europe trip where I have at least some free time for resting or rambling as I see fit. Meanwhile, I'm going in search of weird old bakeries and crepes and frites and Carciofi alla Giudia and the random Irish pub in Rome and an occult bookstore Neil Gaiman recommended near the British Museum -- but who knows what I'm actually going to find?
(Hopefully treasure. I'm going mudlarking on the Thames one morning.)

so random (fashion related)
if you're tall (175cm+) and don't know where to get proper (basic) tall jeans from, try 177salon. They're a small korean brand run by a couple, I got 2 pairs and a wholesome note from the husband who runs the main things like photography, customer service, packaging😆
I think there are two versions, the korean one has more items than the international site
(the woman with the brown denims is the ceo, 179cm)
idk i thought someone is tall here and needs recommendations, especially if you're in asia where they're shorter on avrg. + I deleted IG and have the irresistable urge to talk about fashion once in a while.. if there are questions, ask🥹
careful if you're from europe, german customs are a shame. 35€ extra for 2 items😒

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the U.S. was nearing a final deal to contribute $20 billion toward a broader loan package with allies to help Ukraine. | Roberto Schmidt/AFP via Getty Images
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Tuesday that the U.S. was “very close” to finalizing a $20 billion contribution to a broader loan package to Ukraine that will be repaid from the income generated by frozen Russian assets.
“We’re 99 percent there and it’s nailing down just a couple of relatively small things,” Yellen told reporters. “We are very close.”
The U.S. and its allies have been trying to iron out the details of the $50 billion loan package since leaders reached an agreement at the G7 meeting in June. The deal, which came after Yellen and other Biden administration officials rallied sometimes reluctant allies around the idea, anticipated that Ukraine would receive the money by the end of the year. Yellen said that was still the goal.
The loan offers G7 nations a chance to lock in longer-term funding for Ukraine’s war effort and insulate the money from the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. Former President Donald Trump and many Republicans have been deeply skeptical of sending further U.S. assistance to Ukraine.
The European Parliament on Tuesday moved ahead with approving its own contribution to the loan of roughly $38 billion, though that share is expected to decrease with the U.S. allocation to the loan. The UK separately approved its contribution of about $3 billion.
The EU moved ahead to approve its participation in the loan without the U.S. as the Biden administration sought greater EU assurances that the Russian assets — the vast majority of which are frozen in Europe — would stay immobilized for a longer period of time. The concern was that the freeze on the assets could be ended before the G7 loan was repaid.
The EU currently needs a unanimous vote every six months to renew the sanctions that keep the Russian state assets blocked. But Hungary, whose leader Viktor Orbán is a Trump supporter and sympathetic to Russian President Vladimir Putin, had blocked changes to the EU sanctions regime that the U.S. was seeking.
Yellen said that even without those changes, U.S. officials feel confident that they can provide a $20 billion contribution to the broader $50 billion loan package.
“We have a high degree of confidence that the money will be there and will remain locked down,” Yellen said. She said the asset freeze is one component of a broader sanctions program, which she said would be “inconceivable” for any EU member to terminate while Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues.
“The assurances are already there,” Yellen said. “We asked for some modest strengthening but feel good that this is a secure loan that will be serviced by Russian assets — by Russia and not by American taxpayers.”

Max is civil towards Charles because he bet Charles. Max is a wdc. A 3 time one at that. Charles does not like Max as much people want to believe it. We all know if it was the other way around Max would not be running the way Charles is. Also people looovveee to point out how Jos follows a Charles fan account and how he loves Charles. Jos being positive about another drivers shows that he does not perceive them as a threat to Max and therefore Max thinks the same. Jos hated Daniel and would bitch about him at any point during esp during rbr days. Jos has not rested about Lewis and will continue because he is Max’s biggest threat.
I do think people need to grow up and realise this is a workplace and they’re competing against each other. It’s not sunshine, rainbows, sleepovers and plaiting each others hair. I knew it was going bad a few years back but lestappens are a different breed considering they barely interact even at the workplace
Got to say I disagree with most of this as at today.
I agree that Charles and Max are just friendly colleagues and besides having a couple of mutuals they don’t think about each other. I think Charles definitely disliked Max a lot more back in the early days but I think their paths have diverged a lot since then. They’re not really rivals and haven’t been in a long time so I think that’s mellowed out a lot of their interactions.
I don’t agree that Jos wrote off Charles. I think Jos said a thing one time because again, they were the top karters in Europe…those are the kids that make it to f1. It wasn’t like he was talking about something that didn’t have a big chance of happening at that point. And I don’t think he necessarily meant it like “they’ll fight for championships, this will be the rivalry of Max’s life”, I think he probably meant “lol they’ll be seeing each other on track”.
Jos hated Daniel because Daniel had seniority at Red Bull, and because Daniel is close to Christian. I think Jos saw Daniel as a threat to Max’s position at Red Bull at one time, but not in terms of talent, just that Daniel would be an obstacle to Max getting priority as soon as he wanted it.
I don’t believe Lewis is Max’s biggest threat as at today. I haven’t seen Jos talking about Lewis in ages and honestly as a parent you would never catch me letting go of the 2021 nonsense, so maybe he hasn’t either.
I think Lestappen has been so over-commercialised by the teams though. These are two guys who’ve known each other their whole lives, it would honestly be pathetic if they couldn’t have some friendly banter now and then considering how often they see each other. But the teams have kind of packaged it like some enemies to besties thing now and it’s a bit…Larry Stylinson now. To me, anyway

I recently watched for the first time the 1D XFactor weekly competition songs and the posts about Liam saying the group was built around him really made me think. One thing is totally clear from those early songs - Liam was the most poised and confident of the group. They needed him to anchor things at the beginning. But it’s also clear that he was just about at his ceiling. He never really got that much better. Where Harry, and I would also say Zayn, had a Grand Canyon worth of potential. They are so rough, but you can just see what could be. Louis and Niall are just sort of there, but Liam, Harry and Zayn made that group. So while Liam claims the group was built around him, it was actually built around the potential of Harry and Zayn, with Liam there to give them stability early on. He was really already at his peak. A competent singer with decent presence. He never moved past that. Zayn could have, but for whatever reason, anxiety, work ethic, drugs, just never tapped in to what he probably could have been.
Harry on the other hand continually, to this day, works on improving. There is a very early WMYB video where he is just shaking and his breath control is non-existent. But just a couple of months later and his progression is unreal. Even early LOT shows compared to the final Europe leg show progression. He just works extremely hard and never, never coasts.
As for songwriting credits for Liam and Louis - no comment, what a joke. Lol.
Harry had the whole package and even from day one it was clear he would be the star. But it’s false to say they made him the star - he had to work to improve and he did and still does. Love him.
What a great ask! Agree that Liam plateaued vocally after the XF while Harry kept improving. Harry also has that innate charisma that no money can buy, even as a teenager.
