Pilger’s politics can fairly be described as anti-American, in that he reflexively saw the United States as a malevolent actor in any conceivable situation. That idée fixe in turn drove him to the conviction that any regime opposed by the US was automatically innocent or even benign. Interviewed on the state-propaganda outlet Russia Today in 2018, he declared the Putin regime’s attempted murder of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury a ‘carefully constructed drama in which the media plays a role’. He said in December 2021, as if Ukrainians lacked any capacity to speak and act for themselves and were merely puppets of Washington: ‘It was the US that overthrew the elected govt in Ukraine in 2014 allowing Nato to march right up to Russia’s western border.’
The apotheosis of this approach was an article in 2016 in which Pilger claimed: ‘The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague has quietly cleared the late Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic, of war crimes committed during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, including the massacre at Srebrenica.’
There was, I need hardly say, no truth whatever in this preposterous fabrication. With all too familiar legerdemain and gullibility, Pilger had alighted on an article on the Russia Today website and, without stating this was his source, plagiarised it. In my view this episode marks, in its combination of idleness and indecency, the nadir of Pilger’s career, and it was a very low and shady point indeed.
This is not the place to set out the chronology of the Bosnian war but what the mainstream media (including The Guardian, through the exemplary reporting of Ed Vulliamy and Maggie O’Kane) said about it at the time was simply the truth. The war was not a cover for American power: it was a campaign of genocidal aggression conducted by Bosnian Serb forces covertly orchestrated from Belgrade, and in which Nato intervened against their positions far too late. It was also, as I have described here, a terrible augury of the barbarous assault that another European autocrat, Vladimir Putin, would direct against Ukraine 30 years afterwards.
What, then, of the earlier body of Pilger’s work, before his alleged journalistic and ethical deterioration? In the nature of things, it was not always wrong, but it was always reductive. His condemnation of Australian recognition of Indonesia’s occupation of East Timor, in print and in his 1994 film Death of a Nation, was entirely correct. But to be right on a discrete issue was never enough for him. He would have to construct some overarching explanation (or, less politely, a conspiracy theory) in which to embed it. He hence charged that Australia was administering a ‘hidden empire’ that ‘stretches from the Aboriginal slums of Sydney to the South Pacific’. You’d be hard put to find any such coherence in Australian foreign policy, which has often been made on the hoof and at the mercy of events.
When East Timor eventually achieved its independence, it did so to the fury of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. It was, in their eyes, an affront, for East Timor (whose population is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic) was properly a ‘part of the Islamic world’ and belonged to Indonesia. This complaint was explicitly cited by bin Laden in justifying al-Qaeda’s bombing of the Indonesian tourist resort of Bali in October 2002, which killed 202 people including 88 Australians.
Pilger was usually quick to blame western foreign policy for provoking terrorism – he referred to the 7/7 attacks in London in 2005 as ‘Blair’s bombs’ – yet here was a case where western nations incurred the wrath of al-Qaeda for unequivocally (if belatedly) doing the right thing. The geopolitical situation was more complex than he had supposed, and than you would imagine from reading his output. He dealt with the disjunction of theory and fact in time-honoured fashion, by never mentioning it.
John Pilger was a charlatan and a fraudster

第2話 【前半】 - 異服 (queer clothes)
hello everyone, this is the first part of my series on conceptual samples which is all about (sustainable) fashion! the title 「異服」 is a play on the word 衣服 (i-fuku) meaning clothes and the character 異 (i) which stands for different or queerness. this post is for anyone who is sick of fast fashion, boring designs & heterosexual, cisgender norms that are embedded in fashion. interested in the concept of slow fashion, i will introduce you to 5 queer designers that embrace ecological, ethical & sustainable approaches to fashion.
i already have my 🌈gay socks🌈 on, so let's go!
Mark Baigent uses fashion to address social & political themes, creating gender-free clothing. although their designs might seem to engender either a more feminine or masculine appearance, in understanding gender as simply being human, Baigent’s clothes create gender-neutral silhouettes. these garments are not tailored to certain body types, thus they’re intended to be worn by anybody. they aim to design fashion that creates a dialogue between convention and avant-garde. minimalistic & geometric shapes characterize the clothes of the designer who supports slow fashion as well as sustainability. accordingly, Baigent makes a point of following fair trade ethics by using natural, locally sourced materials from which they craft the various clothing items in their small manufactury in bali.
the following collection focuses on the concepts “Gender Is A Lie” & “I Am Not Your Binary”. these two phrases can also be seen on several items. the collection embraces everything Mark Baigent stands for: gender-free & ethical clothing.
God Era by Nino Goderidze is a notable representative when it comes to ethical fashion. the designer who avidly supports sustainability has also worked on creating biodegradable vegan leather. she views the human body as an “object and inspiration for developing an organic art medium”. her work depicts a future of queered technology where the human becomes a genderless organism that possesses both natural & synthetic qualities. In this context, I want to introduce 2 of God Era’s collections:
digital ark: in a post-apocalyptic future where humans have lost their physical state, the memories of every inhabitant of earth are preserved in the digital ark. with this collection, God Era seeks to criticize the consumerism intrinsic to the (mainstream) fashion industry which ignores its effects on the planet's resources in favor of making a profit. not only does this practice endangers the existence of human but also that of animals. hence, the collection features several items made from the designer’s vegan leather.
(white) apocalypse: the cyborg, half human & half robot, emerges as a hybrid organism from the human being who has been losing its humanistic features. this highly intelligent creature could be described as transhuman as it comes to possess superhuman abilities. this project is meant to reflect the chaotic nature of organisms’ evolutionary processes.
Alectra Rothschild celebrates trans (& queer) identities through her fashion designs. she subscribes to the concept of subversive glamor & “decadent glamour in a rotten way”. she states, “the people I design for are like myself, trans people, and people who subscribe to glamour and femininity.” the designer describes her designs as “flamboyant, high femme, and quite shameless”.
people (some of them terfs) have criticized Rothschild’s work as relying on stereotypes and, in essence, constituting a caricature of femininity. however, as a matter of fact, the designer honors the impactful women in her life and puts femininity & femmes on a pedestal. in her work, she focuses on the idea of community before consumption. further, she uses various techniques when creating her designs that allow for her clothes to fit on many different bodies.
Rothschild’s collection Messages from the Stars is her “love letter to the trans community” & seeks to effect a shift from perceiving being trans as abnormal to appreciating the beauty & divinity of the trans experience & community. she explores the concept of multiplicity in oneself, drawing on the idea that context influences who we are in that moment. for this purpose, the designer created different characters that represent different aspects of herself that co-exist within her. These include the witch, the pirate & the showgirl, sporting outfits such as three-piece suits and burlesque minidresses.
“the point of the collection was to say that you can be a lot of things all at once. stop minimising yourself into one box when you can be 15 boxes.”
in another collection, Rothschild focuses on the lifestyle of people "at the fringes of respectable society", such as the djs, artists, drag queens & voguers. this collection embodies a mix of several different aesthetics, from drapery to bodysuits, showing Rothschild’s refusal to follow one clear style. As such, the danish designer distances herself from mainstream scandinavian fashion which is characterized by its clean & homogenous look. in Rothschild’s own words, “fuck the clean narrative! chaos reigns!”
Levau Shveldize focuses on LGBTQ+ activism with clothes & addresses queer oppression as he views fashion as a vital tool for communicating social or political messages. surrounded by conservative rules of behavior, he feels that the freedom of self-expression is severely limited, especially for queer people. for this reason, the aim of his work is to transform society’s hatred & fear of the LGBTQ+ community into understanding & acceptance.
“I want to cause a reaction with my collections”
the designer gets his inspiration & motivation from other queer people working in fields of his interest. Shveldize envisions that his clothing can enable (queer) people to express themselves free from heteronormative standards.
sustainable & ethical practices are of high importance to Shveldize as he recognizes that the fashion industry is among the biggest polluters in the world. his devotion can be seen in one of his “gender-fucking collections” where he presents unisex eco- & LGBTQ-friendly clothing. the garments are created by recycling & upcycling second-hand fabrics & materials; the designs are inspired by gothic art, social simulation games & pop culture, but also sexual fetishes. the items in this collection are characterized by asymmetrical cuts, the combination of different materials & experimental details.
in his collection The Interview with Death, Shvelidze reinterprets bedtime stories told by his grandfather, full of strange & beautiful creatures, as pink bloody nightmares. distorted see-through dresses, tight belts & blood drips imprint the feeling of fear into the different garments. with his grotesque & gender-fluid presentation, the designer intended to highlight the queer communities that are facing oppression in post-soviet georgia.
Raffa Reuther is a self-described nonbinary dyke & an interdisciplinary artist working in the fields of fashion, photography & printmaking, among others. they create handmade garments from locally sourced materials with a focus on shape, identity, construction & play in their designs.
the designer criticizes the idea that one is expected to wear only clothing which flatters, as prescribed by patriarchy, one’s body shape. being someone whose existence defies binary notions of gender, Reuther seeks to present themself in a way that doesn’t conform to society’s expectation of feminine or masculine presentation. accordingly, Reuther designs their clothes to be worn by anyone of any gender & of any body size. the colorful garments are made for people to boldly express who they are, while at the same serving their practical purpose of, e.g. keeping warm & holding stuff, as well as go with the wearer’s existing wardrobe. there is an emphasis on fun, which can be seen in the combining of different fabrics & colors in the designs. this is meant to represent the unique personalities of the people who wear the garments.
i hope you enjoyed this little journey into queer & sustainable fashion 😊 (stay tuned for part 2)

Bohemian Leisure Wear: Kaftan Housedresses for the Free-Spirited Fashionista
For the boho fashionista, kaftans are more than just a wardrobe staple—they are a reflection of a lifestyle that embraces comfort, style, and a touch of wanderlust. Each kaftan in your collection is not simply clothing but a piece of the world, a vibrant souvenir from your travels, bringing the essence of diverse cultures into your closet. These flowy, ethereal garments, with their intricate patterns and rich fabrics, capture the bohemian essence perfectly. Whether it's a red floral housedress kaftan for a lazy afternoon at home or a long summer caftan for a breezy beachside soirée, kaftans represent effortless chic at its finest.
A Symbol of Bohemian Comfort
Kaftans have a deep history rooted in many cultures, but they have evolved into a modern boho fashion essential, known for their graceful, flowy shapes and beautiful, ornate designs. The appeal of kaftan housedresses lies in their dual purpose—they offer the cozy comfort of loungewear while still maintaining an air of elegance and sophistication. The freedom they provide, both in terms of movement and style, makes them perfect for a day spent relaxing at home or transitioning into evening wear with just a few accessories.
The beauty of the kaftan lies in its simplicity and versatility. With a wide, billowing shape that flatters all body types, it’s the ultimate embodiment of comfort. Slip into one of these relaxed dresses, and you’re instantly enveloped in a sense of ease, like a warm, stylish hug that allows you to move, lounge, or even entertain in comfort.

The Essence of Global Wanderlust
What makes kaftans especially beloved by boho fashionistas is their connection to global cultures. Each kaftan is a small tribute to the rich textile traditions of the world—whether inspired by Moroccan patterns, Indian block prints, or Mexican embroidery. These garments often feature vibrant colors, intricate beadwork, hand-dyed fabrics, or embellishments like tassels and fringe, capturing the essence of far-off places and exotic destinations.
A floral red kaftan might evoke the lush gardens of Marrakech, while a breezy, light summer caftan with tropical prints transports you to the beaches of Bali. Wearing a kaftan is like taking a small journey, allowing you to carry pieces of your travels—or those yet to come—wherever you go.
Versatility: From Lounging to Soirées
One of the greatest appeals of the kaftan housedress is its versatility. It’s the perfect outfit for lounging at home, sipping tea, and letting the day pass slowly. The relaxed, flowing silhouette pairs beautifully with casual, bohemian interiors—imagine sitting by your favorite window nook, surrounded by plush pillows, while wrapped in the soft folds of a floral kaftan.
But the versatility doesn’t stop there. The right kaftan can just as easily be dressed up for a social occasion. Heading to a beachside soirée or a casual garden party? A lightweight, summery kaftan with vibrant patterns can be paired with sandals, statement jewelry, and a wide-brimmed hat to instantly create a chic, bohemian look. A cinched waist with a belt and strappy wedges transforms a laid-back kaftan into an effortlessly elegant evening ensemble, perfect for cocktails and conversation under the stars.

Sustainability in Bohemian Fashion
Kaftans, especially those made from sustainable, natural fabrics, have become a go-to for those committed to eco-friendly fashion. Many designers now focus on ethical production, ensuring that each kaftan is not only beautiful but also aligned with environmental values. By choosing kaftans crafted from organic cotton, hand-dyed silks, or upcycled fabrics, you're embracing both boho beauty and sustainability.
The slow fashion movement has placed kaftans at the heart of its ethos. These timeless pieces are built to last and are not tied to fleeting trends, making them perfect for the bohemian fashionista who values quality over quantity. With every wear, your kaftan becomes a reflection of your commitment to a more mindful way of dressing, one that embraces the idea of cherishing and re-wearing garments that tell a story.

A Timeless Piece for Every Boho Wardrobe
At the end of the day, kaftans are more than just a piece of clothing—they represent a lifestyle of ease, adventure, and artistry. Each kaftan tells its own story through the colors, patterns, and craftsmanship that went into its creation. For the boho fashionista, it’s about more than just wearing something beautiful—it’s about embodying the free spirit of a global traveler, an artist, and a dreamer.

The Allure of Bali: A Hub for Swimwear Manufacturing
Nestled among Indonesia's thousands of islands, Bali stands out not only as a premier tourist destination but also as a burgeoning center for the global swimwear industry. The island's unique blend of rich cultural heritage, skilled craftsmanship, and modern manufacturing capabilities has positioned it as an attractive location for brands and designers seeking to produce high-quality swimwear. This article dives into the thriving swimwear factory scene in Bali, exploring the reasons behind its rise, the benefits it offers, and the challenges it faces, along with the broader implications for the fashion industry.
The Rise of Bali as a Swimwear Manufacturing Hub
Bali's journey to becoming a key player in the swimwear manufacturing sector is rooted in its long-standing tradition of textile production and garment manufacturing. The island's artisans are renowned for their expertise in fabric dyeing, weaving, and printing techniques, which have been passed down through generations. In recent decades, this traditional knowledge has merged with modern manufacturing practices, attracting international swimwear brands seeking a blend of craftsmanship and innovation.
Several factors contribute to Bali's attractiveness as a swimwear manufacturing destination. Its strategic location in Southeast Asia provides easy access to high-quality materials from nearby textile producers. Additionally, Bali's reputation as a tropical paradise draws designers and brand owners, who find inspiration in its vibrant landscapes and cultural richness. This synergy between location, resources, and creativity has fueled the growth of a dynamic swimwear manufacturing industry on the island.
The Advantages of Bali Swimwear Factories
High-Quality Craftsmanship
Swimwear factories in Bali are distinguished by their commitment to quality and attention to detail. Local artisans possess a deep understanding of textile properties and garment construction, ensuring that each piece meets high standards of durability, fit, and finish. This emphasis on craftsmanship makes Bali an appealing choice for brands that prioritize quality in their swimwear lines.
Ethical Manufacturing Practices
Increasingly, consumers and brands are focusing on sustainability and ethical production practices. Bali's swimwear factories are responding to this demand by adopting environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques and ensuring fair labor practices. Many facilities use sustainable materials, such as recycled fabrics, and implement waste-reduction measures in their production processes. Moreover, the close-knit nature of Balinese communities fosters a work environment that respects workers' rights and promotes social welfare.
Customization and Flexibility
Another key advantage of Bali's swimwear factories is their ability to offer customized production services. Whether it's a small boutique brand requiring limited runs or a larger label seeking extensive customization options, factories in Bali are equipped to handle diverse needs. This flexibility allows brands to experiment with designs, materials, and production techniques, fostering innovation in the swimwear industry.
Navigating Challenges
Despite its many advantages, the swimwear manufacturing industry in Bali faces several challenges. Logistics can be complex, with the need to import certain materials and navigate the intricacies of international shipping. Additionally, the global nature of the fashion industry means that Bali's factories must constantly adapt to changing trends and consumer expectations, requiring ongoing investment in technology and skills development.
Another challenge is maintaining the balance between growth and sustainability. As the industry expands, preserving Bali's natural environment and cultural heritage becomes increasingly important. Swimwear factories are therefore seeking ways to scale their operations responsibly, ensuring that economic development does not come at the expense of the island's ecological and social fabric.
The Future of Swimwear Manufacturing in Bali
Looking ahead, Bali's swimwear manufacturing industry appears poised for continued growth. The increasing global focus on sustainability and ethical production aligns with Bali's strengths, offering opportunities for factories on the island to lead the way in responsible swimwear manufacturing. Additionally, the rise of digital platforms and e-commerce allows Bali-based factories to connect with a wider range of clients, from emerging designers to established brands looking to diversify their production bases.
To capitalize on these opportunities, stakeholders in Bali's swimwear industry are investing in technological advancements, workforce training, and environmental initiatives. By doing so, they aim to enhance their competitive edge while contributing to the island's sustainable development.
Conclusion The swimwear factory scene in Bali represents a confluence of tradition and modernity, where age-old craftsmanship meets contemporary fashion. The island's commitment to quality, sustainability, and flexibility makes it an attractive destination for swimwear production, offering unique advantages to brands and designers worldwide. As Bali's swimwear factories navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead, they continue to shape the global swimwear landscape, driven by a vision of ethical, innovative, and high-quality manufacturing. In this way, Bali is not just a paradise for tourists but a beacon for the future of the swimwear industry.

With a background in fashion design, I often thought about creating a sleepwear label as I always struggled to find what I was looking for and I felt there was a gap in the market for fashionable sleepwear that didn't compromise on comfort. I wanted to create something that was both stylish and comfortable, so you could feel good about yourself even when you were just lounging around at home. I eventually took the plunge and Lucia the Label was born.
Lucia the Label is a boutique sleepwear label, born from our love of effortless boho style and our desire to make sleepwear better.

Choose: YES or NO to photo Manipulation.
Introduction to photo manipulation:
Photo manipulation involves transforming or altering a photo using various methods and techniques to achieve the desired results. Some photo manipulations are considered skillful works of art, while others are considered unethical practices, especially when used to deceive the public. Other examples include use for political propaganda, low-turnout rallies, but images of people are added to the photo. The photo itself is manipulative in shooting by finding the right angle to display as many people as possible, or to improve the appearance of a product or person. It can also serve for fun and practical joke like the latest case of Bernie Sanders meme. Depending on the application and the purpose, some photo manipulations are considered to be an art form because they involve the creation of unique images and in some cases, the signature expressions of art by photographic artists. Other examples of photo manipulation include modifying photos using ink, paint, airbrushes, or duplicate exposure, snippets and negatives together in the darkroom, scratching instant movies, or using software-based manipulation tools applied to digital images. This technique was used in the former communist countries to retouch photos of the history, such as the disappearance of political leaders from historical or other meetings. Software applications have been developed for digital image manipulation, ranging from professional applications to highly basic image software for casual users.
"Pollution" photo:
Edited photo
Original photo
Pollution is a global problem that affects all of us. We are all aware of its existence but very few people try to make a change in the current situation. I covered the faces of the couple to protect the privacy of the people in it. The photo could be used to illustrate an article about the pollution of the marine world, and it would be somehow sarcastic. The biggest problem of this century is pollution which is not only warming the climate, but also making our lakes, rivers, oceans and seas acidic. Thousands of debris are dumped into the sea, which is why many countries are protected by wetlands and sanctions. I also added a can of Coca-Cola next to the swimmers to raise the alarm for urgent measures. An article a few weeks ago pointed out that in the beautiful beaches of Bali the debris has invaded the sand, because due to the pandemic, many hotels that take care of cleaning them have closed. This pollution endangers not only human life but above all water’s life. Due to the pollution many animals that communicate using ultrasound now have difficulties communicating with each other. I think that the manipulated photo is an outcome of millions of photos that show the same situation of pollution (but the others on the internet are without people on it). I don’t think that tourists would ever go on vacation in places where the cans or other debris are floating at the surface of the sea. The non-edited photo could be used and give the message to the viewer: Love your planet and do what you can to protect it, to prevent pollution and to spread the right message. Whereas, the edited photo gives the wanted message to the public, it can be misguiding as it doesn’t represent the truth in the moment and place when the photo was shot. In my opinion the edited or unedited photo cannot be used as press photography, because it doesn’t represent “pure” news. It is not linked to a specific event or lifestyle and the purpose of the edited photo is just raising awareness toward people and pollution. If an article would be realized, this should not be the main photo, but serve as an attractive photo to read the news, and after reading the article, people could do extra researches and get more information about the topic. In both cases, if we use the original or not original photo, we fulfill the meaning that the photography has. As in the Smithsonian Project, the impact on the society in this case will be how photography changes a full cycle of what we see, what we remember, what we do, the place we choose to go, and also what we want (to change or not the future).
“War” Photo:
Edited photo
Original photo
In the case of this photo I covered the face of the little girl for ethical reasons, and I also intensified the colors of the writing in order emphasize directly on the message. The photo was taken in peacetime, in a place where no fighting is taking place, but where an artist has written a well-known slogan all over the world (if I were to choose a picture of war there could be mutilated, dead, massacres as in the case of Syria or Iraq). We could use this photo best in an article on world wars, to give a message of peace. Since 2011 over 800 thousand people have lost their lives in war, and 108 million people were killed in wars in the twentieth century, so it is very important to focus on the bright side of that. The photo is an artistic realization, not a direct image from the war, which makes it more unique, and the purpose is to raise the sense of peace and positivity. It shows the future and the faith of rebuilding and healing the traumas of the new generation.
I think it is a perfect tool to deliver and promote the reality of peace and the impact of the wars on societies. In my opinion, it can also be used as press photography to impress the viewer and raise the curiosity of reading the article linked to this photo (but I would not prefer to use this photo as press photography). Edited or unedited image, both lead to the truth and they do not misguide the public as the message to deliver is clear.
Advertising photo:
Edited photo
Original photo
Shades and colors in this photo were edited to add sharpness and contrast making it look more appealing. It can be used for articles in magazines or advertisements online as well as in advertisement for fashion, perfumes, promotion of a new song (as a cover of the album), or for an artistic exhibition. It can also be used as press photography to record an event where the image was used, to show the sales that was done, or for lifestyle stories. My inspiration for this creation was retracted by Richard Avedon’s work. Today more than never, the photography is the core of marketing.
The better a “product” is presented the more it will sell. Since the manipulation of this photo is not touching the ethical rules, it can be used freely whenever is needed. The photo above will not mislead the public and it will showcase the product it was created for. The photo doesn’t have added objects and has a wide range of use. It will serve the purpose even if the public will not see the original image, meaning that we can use the edited or unedited image, even though in my opinion the edited image is more powerful. It can be used as press photography for the purpose to write about an event that will occur or had occurred, or as an article linked to the design field, and even to the tendencies of the lifestyle.
Art vs press photography:
The difference between an artistic photo and a press photo lies in serving the truth. In the case of the photos I used, they are more artistic. Art photography is open to interpretation, whereas press photography uses images without any explanation. Press photography is spontaneous, and is used in recording news, lifestyle stories and different events with the intent to capture the image and to write a story without leaving room for bias and attract the public to read more about it. On the other hand, art photography is a created vision of the photographer. The artist in this case is free to capture images that make sense for him and have an interpretation of the subject.
