Sweet December
Book: Open Heart, Book 2 (post-attack) Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Category: Fluff, Christmas Word count: 1K Summary: Ethan eavesdrops on a conversation between Sawyer and her best friend. A/N: This fic was inspired by this Instagram reel and a little “Caption This” fun with a friend. It was meant to be an angsty fic, but then I listened to Sweet December by Brett Eldridge and Kelly Clarkson and changed directions. Merry Christmas!🎄
Events/Prompts: Participating in Winter Holidays 2024 hosted by @choicesholidays | Cuddling by the fireplace
With plans to spend their day off together, Ethan insisted that Sawyer come to his after her late-night shift at the hospital. The apartment was dark except for the glow of his bedside lamps, drawing attention away from the living room and the surprise he had set up for his girl.
The tactic worked. An exhausted Sawyer entered the quiet apartment well after midnight and headed straight for the bedroom like a moth to the flame. After a quick kiss and a much-needed shower, she draped herself over Ethan’s body like a blanket and passed out within minutes.
It was mid-morning when Sawyer padded into the kitchen, still a little groggy, with her phone pressed to her ear. Finding no evidence of Ethan's morning coffee, she assumed he was still at the gym, which was his usual weekend routine.
“That sounds like so much fun. I’ve always wanted to visit New York during Christmas time…” Sawyer told the person on the other end of the line. “Maybe next year.”
When she put the phone on speaker so she could start the coffee, her best friend’s voice filled the room.
“What about you? Are you going home to Arizona for Christmas?” Christian asked.
“No. I love my family and know they are concerned, but they have been so overbearing that I’ve started dodging their calls,” she confessed.
“Oof.”
“I know,” Sawyer grimaced guiltily, “and I know they mean well, but I just need time to process things on my own. I can’t take any more time off, anyway. I just got back to work and need to catch up on my clinic hours. Besides, I’m looking forward to experiencing a Christmas like in the movies. You know, someplace cold enough that it snows, and you can cozy up by the fire and drink hot chocolate."
“Will you spend Christmas with Ethan, then?”
From the living room, Ethan watched as Sawyer shrugged her shoulders. He’d been listening to their conversation while he lounged in front of the fireplace, waiting for her to turn around and notice him.
"I don't want to assume, but I hope so," Sawyer answered softly, then sighed deeply. "God, Christian, I know it sounds so corny, but when I start feeling all upside down, he turns me right around."
"Awww..."
Ethan continued to watch and listen as she tinkered with the coffee machine.
"We’re both working on Christmas, but a wintery night cuddling by the fire like we had at Dagger Mountain would be amazing. As for anything else, I think Ethan’s more the ‘spirit of Christmas’ type than the ‘holiday spirit’ type. Last year, when I came over to help with Naveen's case, I brought him one of those potted tabletop trees from the hospital gift shop because he didn't have a tree or a wreath or anything. It made me sad for him."
Ethan raised his brows in surprise, then looked to the corner of the room where, the night before, he set a five-foot balsam fir into a tree stand. Boxes of ornaments and garland that the doorman helped carry into the apartment sat on the floor nearby.
Christian chuckled. “You sound like Cindy Lou Who talking about the Grinch. Girl, he's been a bachelor for a long time. Guys don't care about that shit. Sam wouldn't bother either if it weren't for the boys."
"Yeah, I guess you’re right."
A loud pop from the living room made Sawyer jump. She quickly spun around to find Ethan reclined in front of the fireplace. Christian’s voice faded into the background as Sawyer's senses awakened with the warmth of the roaring fire. The smell of fresh pine needles. The twinkling of white lights in the corner. The soft crooning of Bing Crosby’s “Silver Bells.” The taste of creamy chocolate and peppermint from the cup that Ethan walked over and offered her.
“Sawyer? Hellooo… did I lose you?”
Reaching for her phone, she apologized to her friend. “Sorry about that, um, Ethan just surprised me… Can I call you back later?”
“Of course! I should go anyway. I think Sam and the boys are ready to leave for the ice rink.”
“Have fun and send me pics. Love you.”
“Love you, too, babe.”
Sawyer ended the call and set her phone aside. “Hi,” she greeted, standing on her tiptoes.
“Morning,” Ethan answered, bending down to meet her halfway for a tender kiss.
Gesturing to the living room, “What’s all this?”
“Since you're not going home for Christmas, I thought we could celebrate together. Here.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, really,” he confirmed with a peck to her lips.
“I’d love that...” she blushed with embarrassment, “as you probably heard.” She wrapped her arms around his waist and looked at the glowing tree. “You bought a real tree?”
“Given your family’s Christmas tree business, I knew anything else would be considered sacrilege.”
She smiled up at him. “You remembered that?”
“When it comes to you, I remember everything.”
Pressing herself tighter against him, Sawyer rested her cheek on his chest. “It’s so cozy in here. And look! It’s snowing outside.” Sawyer moved to sit on the sofa, tugging the sleeve of Ethan’s robe to get him to follow. “Come cuddle with me.”
Ethan sat, draping an arm over her shoulder, tucking her into his side. But just as they got comfortable, Ethan moved to stand up.
“Where are you going?”
“I forgot,” he started, “I bought one of those big fluffy blankets you said I needed for cuddling on the couch. It’s in the hall closet.”
Sawyer smiled so big. “You are so sweet sometimes.”
“Sweet?! Uh-oh, my reputation for being a Grinch is in jeopardy.”
Reminded again that he heard every word of her conversation, she scowled at him. “Hasn’t anyone ever told you it’s rude to eavesdrop? You could have cleared your throat or something.”
Ethan winked, letting her know there was nothing to worry about. “Let me grab the blanket.”
“No,” she demanded, catching his hand before he walked away. Lying back, she pulled him down and on top of her. “A blanket’s good, but you’re even better.”

I Thee Wed…
Premise: Ethan and Cassie are ready to say, ‘I do,’ but they forget one important step.
Book: Open Heart (post series) Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine) Rating/Category: Teen. Fluff. Words: 1,560
A/N: So, I first did Ethan and Cassie's wedding in June 2021. In all that time, I've never written their wedding vows. Maxenna's vows were easier to write. Well, I finally cracked this nut! Yay, me 🎉
Submission for @choicesaugustchallenge prompt "summer wedding"
Cassie Valentine updated the patient chart and mentally crossed off another item from her seemingly endless to-do list. In just nine days, she would stand in the garden of her family home and marry her soulmate.
She couldn’t contain a small, excited scream, a dreamy smile spreading across her face as she imagined Ethan’s awestruck expression when she glided toward him at the floral-decked altar. But, she thought with a smirk, she couldn’t wait to knock him over on their wedding night with what she had on beneath the layers of tulle.
All in good time, Cassie reasoned, turning her attention back to work.
“Marlene?” she called to one of the regular nurses on her floor, handing over the tablet with the patient record. “Keep an eye on potassium levels for Mr. Dubois in 504. Page me if there’s any change in his condition.”
“Will do, Dr. Valentine,” Marlene nodded, scanning the chart quickly to confirm the orders.
She flashed Cassie a friendly smile. “Are you excited about the wedding? You and Dr. Ramsey make such a beautiful couple.”
“I’m counting the minutes,” Cassie grinned. “I have a final fitting for the dress next week, but otherwise, we’re all set.”
“Summer weddings are the best,” another nurse piped in. “Flowers are my favorite part.”
“I love hearing the couple’s vows,” Marlene said. “Are you and Dr. Ramsey writing your own?”
Cassie nodded in response, keeping her expression smooth even as alarm bells blared inside her head. Crap, crap, crap!
Between work, packing up her things at the apartment for the move to Ethan’s and coordinating with Sienna and her mom on the wedding, she had forgotten entirely about the vows.
She and Ethan had negotiated a hybrid ceremony, honoring her Episcopalian beliefs and his agnostic ones. He had agreed to have a priest officiate and receive a spiritual blessing in exchange for non-religious but personal vows, no Communion, hymns or readings.
Writing their own vows had sounded so simple before. A few words of promise, a declaration of their love, exchange rings and you-may-kiss-the-bride. End scene.
But now she realized it was anything but easy. Worse, she had no idea what she would say on the most important day of her life!
The pen dug into the paper, leaving dark, jagged lines on the legal pad as Ethan scratched out yet another sentence. His handwriting, usually neat and precise despite the doctor-like scrawl, had turned into a chaotic mess of crossed-out words and half-formed thoughts. Frustration simmered in his chest, his mind spinning as he tried to wrestle his emotions into something coherent.
He sighed, leaned back in his chair, and rubbed his temple. Sitting through a room full of demanding board members was a walk in the park compared to this. How was he supposed to find the words powerful enough to capture the depth of what he felt for Cassie?
Each attempt felt clumsy and inadequate, the words slipping away from him no matter how hard he tried. Irritated with himself, he muttered a curse under his breath, tearing the paper from the pad and crumpling it into a tight ball. It joined the other pieces of crumpled paper balls scattered around him.
Why had he insisted on their own vows? Should’ve just taken a template and been done with it.
He had been working on them all week and was no closer to the finish line. He had tried writing at home, in his office with the door closed and on a bench in the serenity garden at Edenbrook. Eventually, he retreated to Derry’s Coffee Shop in the hope that a place special to them both would inspire him.
The wedding was a week away, and he did not relish the idea of standing at the altar with nothing more to say than “I do” while Cassie no doubt recited something meaningful about him being her soulmate.
“Tough case?”
Startled, Ethan looked up to find Cassie standing above him.
He had been so absorbed in his frustrated scribbling that he hadn’t even noticed her enter the coffee shop, place her order and walk over to him.
“You could say that,” he hedged, hoping she wouldn’t press for more.
“Maybe I can help,” she suggested, sliding into the seat across from him.
Before he could stop her, she reached for the pad, and he blurted out, “No!” even as she read the words out loud.
“Cassie, my love for you is like an unspecified virus that I couldn’t shake….”
Ethan saw the look of shock on Cassie’s face. Her eyes widened, and her mouth opened slightly. For a moment, they just stared at each other in stunned silence.
“Wait, are these your wedding vows? And did you just compare me to a virus?”
Ethan quickly tried to recover, realizing how the words sounded when said aloud. “I—I didn’t mean it like that. What I’m trying to say is that my love for you is something I never expected, something that took hold of me and changed everything.”
Cassie blinked, and then, to his relief, a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Babe, I appreciate the on-brand medical analogy, especially since I diagnosed Naveen’s bacteriophage, but maybe we can find a less…clinical way to describe it? This is our wedding, after all, not a keynote at the AMA annual symposium.”
“A keynote at the AMA would be easier than these damn vows,” Ethan muttered, running an exasperated hand through his hair.
He picked up his coffee and looked at her over the rim. “I suppose you’ve already written a masterpiece?”
To his surprise, Cassie blushed and looked away. “Not exactly. If you must know, I kind of forgot about them.”
She waved one hand dismissively. “Anyway, this isn’t about me. If you’re struggling, just focus on us, our relationship—what makes me the one for you? How you see our life together. Things like that.”
Ethan narrowed his eyes. “That’s some solid advice.” He reached for his phone, unlocking the screen. “In fact, it’s almost identical to the advice I got from another Valentine just a couple of hours ago. Ah, here it is.” He turned the screen to show her the text from Max.
Cassie’s eyes widened in disbelief. “That cheat!” She snatched the phone from Ethan’s hand, scrolling up to check the time stamp. It was from earlier in the day before she’d texted her brother. “He totally copy-pasted his response to me!”
Ethan chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “Looks like great minds think alike…or at least steal from each other. When did you speak to him?”
Cassie gave him a sheepish look. “Maybe half an hour ago. ”
“Isn’t it the middle of the night where he is?”
She rolled her eyes and made a face. “I know. Max wasn’t thrilled, which is probably why I ended up with recycled advice.”
She straightened in her chair, a hint of frustration in her voice. “I can’t seem to find the right words for our vows. At least you managed to compare me to a virus—I’ve got a completely blank page.”
Ethan chuckled softly, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand gently. “How about we work on them together? We always did our best work figuring out diagnostic differentials as a team. Why should wedding vows be any different?”
Cassie’s smile widened. “Just promise you won’t tell my mother this is how we wrote our vows, or I’ll have to call you a big, fat liar!”
“Deal.”
Nine days later…
Ethan faced Cassie, a deep contentment settling over him, unlike anything he’d ever felt before. As he held her hands in his, the words that once eluded him now flowed as naturally as breathing.
“Cassie, when I first met you, I had no idea we’d end up here, but from that moment on, you’ve captivated me in ways I never imagined. You’ve challenged me, frustrated me and inspired me to be a better person. And I've fallen in love with you again and again, even though I didn’t believe love or family were in the cards for me. You opened my heart to more. I promise to support and encourage you, embrace the unexpected with you, and always work on being the best version of myself for you. I vow to hold your hand and cherish your heart, loving you always and forever.”
Cassie flashed a mischievous grin, her eyes sparkling with amusement as she held Ethan’s gaze, recalling the day they wrote these vows. Her voice was light and playful as she began, making it clear she was savoring every moment.
“Ethan, from the moment you walked into my life—full of arrogance, calling me an amateur—everything changed in ways I never could have predicted. I told you then I was your biggest fan, but that barely scratched the surface of my feelings for you. I can’t imagine a single day without you, and I hope I never do. I promise to stand by your side, to love you fiercely—even when you’re driving me a little crazy—and to choose you every day, no matter what. You are my partner, my soulmate and my greatest adventure. I vow to cherish your heart with all that I am, always and forever.”
And then they lived happily ever after…

OK, it took a little over two months, but I actually finished a fic request list, and as someone with far too many items in my inbox, I'm proud of this! lol What better way to end than with "One Bed Fic Prompts" than with Merida, Olivia, and Casey on a road trip? II hope you enjoy it!
Book: Open Heart Pairings: Ethan x Merida (MC); Bryce x Oliva (F!OC); Tobias x Casey (F!MC) Rating: Teen Trope: There's Just One Bed! Words: 1,175 Summary: Merida, Olivia, and Casey's weekend adventure is off to a rainy start, but they always manage to find their own sunshine.
A/N: Based on the prompts below from @storyofmychoices. Also, participating in @choicesaugustchallenge Prompt 14 - Road Trip. Merida belongs to the amazing @lilyoffandoms and Olivia belongs to the wonderful @storyofmychoices. It was fun to write for our girls again!
MOC World Masterlist || Open Heart Masterlist Full Masterlist
Merida always knew how to play it cool. As the rain hammered on the roof of their car, she convinced Olivia and Casey that she had it totally under control. They never suspected that she had been white-knuckling it the whole time and was the most relieved of all when she saw the small motel they were staying in overnight in the distance.
The Snugglin' Inn looked nothing like it did online. The -g was missing from the neon sign flickering ominously in the night. Its garish pink light reflected in the dozens of little lakes that had formed in the potholes in the parking lot. But after hours on the road in treacherous conditions, the women were willing to stay anywhere... except for maybe Olivia.
“Are you sure this is the place?” she asked nervously.
“Yep, this is it!” Merida smiled. “Rustic charm! Just like the website said!”
"Ah,” Casey said, stretching her arms over her head. “If by charm they mean probably haunted, then yeah, no false advertising claim here! But as long as our room is dry... I’ll fight off the resident ax murderer for one night."
“You don’t really think there’s an ax murderer,” Olivia swallowed. “Do you?”
“Of course there is,” Merida winked. “All motels in Pennsylvania have one. Didn’t you know?”
Casey nodded in agreement. "Yep, state code!"
They rushed to the trunk to grab their bags, then dashed to the tiny lobby dripping wet. The clerk barely glanced at them as she handed over a room key while half-heartedly warning about the air conditioner being on the blink. Normally, faulty air conditioning would be enough to make Casey sleep in the car, but between the rain and talk of murderers, she was eager to get to their room.
“What’s the likelihood that this place has room service?” Olivia asked as they made their way down the outside corridor, her stomach growling.
“About as likely as it is to have comfortable beds,” Merida chuckled.
“Hey,” Casey laughed. “These places are known for being rented by the hour... the beds are what they’re all about.”
“You would know that,” Olivia grinned as Merida pushed the door open.
"Well, this is cozy," Merida said, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she tossed her bag onto the bed. The sole queen-sized bed in the tiny room.
Olivia looked around, nervously biting her lip. "Uhm, where are the other beds?"
"There aren’t any," Casey sighed. “It’s OK. One of us can sleep in the bathtub.”
“No one is sleeping in the bathroom; that’s ridiculous!” Merida insisted. “Have you not seen Psycho? No one goes in the bathroom! If we have to pee – do it in the corner of the room.”
“We probably wouldn’t be the first ones to do that,” Casey observed.
“Guys! Are you sure we should stay here?” Oliva worried.
“We’ll be fine,” Casey assured. “It’s just a night.”
Ever practical, Merida was already looking for solutions to the sleeping arrangements. “If we push the bed against the wall, that should prevent at least one of us from falling onto the floor. It might be a little crowded, but it will do.”
"Crowding is inevitable,” Casey smiled. "But we’re all friends, and it’s not like this is the first time we’ve had to share a bed. Remember the time we stayed at that place in The Berkshires?"
Merida couldn’t help but giggle at the memory. "You mean the time you woke up spooning Olivia, and she nearly had a stroke?"
"Hey, I was asleep! I can’t control what I do in my sleep," Casey defended, although her playful grin betrayed her. "Besides, Olivia was fine with it. Being spooned by Casey is kind of a badge of honor!”
"She’s not wrong," Olivia blushed.
After changing quickly, they all settled into bed with Casey in the middle, Merida against the wall, and Olivia on her other side.
“If I fall on the floor during the night, do you think I’ll catch anything contagious?” Oliva asked.
“Liv,” Merida said pointedly. “We're all doctors. Even if you do, we should be able to cure you.”
Just as they were beginning to get comfortable, Merida’s phone buzzed. She glanced at it and rolled her eyes.
"It's Ethan. Look what he sent me.”
“Again? What does he mean again?” Olivia asked. “He never bailed us out before!”
Merida and Casey exchanged sheepish grins, and Oliva was too frightened to ask.
“Tell Ethan to bite me!” Casey laughed. “Tobias would bail us out in a heartbeat. In fact, he’s probably home looking forward to it right now.”
“Speaking of Tobias,” Olivia smiled, handing Casey her phone from the nightstand beside her.
“Oh, my husband thinks he has jokes,” Casey chuckled, showing her friends her phone.
“He's calling me an octopus! He's seriously like an octopus! I mean it! Those arms go everywhere."
Merida let out a groan. “For the love of God, Casey... if you start talking about your sex life, I will make you sleep in the bathtub with the ax murderer... and I might sharpen his ax."
"Well, tell Tobias not to get too jealous," Olivia giggled. "We’re just here to sleep, not to, you know..."
“Speak for yourself,” Merida laughed, playfully pawing her friend. "You never know what kind of mischief we'll get into!"
Olivia’s phone vibrated next. “It’s Bryce!” She beamed, handing her phone to Casey. “My boyfriend has a warning for you.”
“You know our three idiots are sitting in Donahues Googling memes, believing themselves to be much funnier than they actually are!" Merida insisted.
But Casey didn't hear her; she was too busy shaking her head in righteous indignation. “You spoon a person one time!” She lamented. “One time! I don’t know how I got this reputation!”
“Really?” Merida chortled. “We could give you examples, but I'd like to do other things this weekend, and that would take all our time!"
“Yeah,” Oliva laughed as Casey feigned horror.
“Et tu, Brute!”
With that, Merida hopped over her friends, pushing Casey against the wall and leaving Olivia sandwiched in the middle.
“Hey, what are you doing!” Olivia hollered.
“Tell Bryce you’re safe from Casey on this trip,” Merida laughed, holding her from behind. “But not from me.”
“Hey!” Olivia blushed.
“Sorry! I can't let Casey be the only one with the depraved reputation!" She teased.
Olivia and Merida turned to Casey as she giggled in delight.
“What are you laughing at?" Olivia asked.
“Since Merida is spooning you, I told Tobias I'm forking you. Of course, he wants photos!"
“He wants photos?” Merida chided. "Give me your phone. I’ll give him a photo!"
The friends descended into giggles as they recalled stories, blissfully unaware of their less-than-perfect surroundings. By the time they finally fell asleep, daw was already starting to break, and before they knew it, Merida's alarm went off.
Casey groaned as she snuggled closer to Olivia. "Can we delay getting up for a few more minutes, please?"
"I'm with Casey," Olivia mumbled, resting her head on Merida's shoulder.
Merida shook her head with a grin. "Fine," she said, setting the alarm for fifteen minutes later and then getting back under the cover with her friends. "This is actually kind of nice."
Olivia nodded. "Yeah, I think so too."
"Best road trip ever," Casey yawned. "Now, back to sleep!"

Call it What You Want (Ethan x f!MC)
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey and MC (Lilac Allende)
Word Count: 2.2K
Rating/Warning: T/ Some Language
Summary: After their kiss, they both agree to take a break enjoying the city of Miami. Set after the events of 1.10.
Note: Two things about me: I will always write about Miami and I am manifesting Reputation (TV)
A faint pink glow seeped through the drawn curtains that morning, indicating it was right before sunrise. Lilac rolled over on the mattress, groaning. Her head felt like lead as she struggled to find comfort on the fluffy hotel pillow. Her stiff muscles protested as she moved, a side effect of a long and restless night. She had lost track of the time when the rolling waves outside had finally lulled her to sleep. It couldn’t have been more than three hours ago.
Now, she lay awake in the rosy-hued and desolate hotel room. Try as she might, she couldn’t stop her gaze from wandering to the closed door. Every nerve in her body was too aware of the fact that just on the other side, Ethan lay on the living room’s couch, most likely awake too.
Was he replaying their kiss from the previous night like she had been doing all night? Did his thoughts stray to the way their bodies fit so perfectly or to how their hearts shared the same frenetic beat?
With a resigned sigh, Lilac decided to start her day. There was no use lying in that cold bed, thinking of the sting of Ethan’s rejection. Temples pulsing, she hastily got dressed and quietly padded to the common area. The couch where he had slept was empty, his blanket already neatly folded. Something akin to relief flooded her at the prospect of avoiding him altogether.
The universe, however, had other plans. A few steps further and Lilac saw his tall frame by the kitchen counter. He was in the middle of pouring himself a cup of coffee when he froze, sensing her.
He turned to face her and their eyes met, paralyzing them both.
The silence stretched for so long that Lilac thought he would opt for not speaking to her.
“Morning,” he said at last.
His tone was imperceptible, but Lilac could see the remnants of tension in his expression. The bags under his eyes told her he didn’t sleep well either.
“Morning,” she replied, careful to keep her voice neutral.
There was more loaded silence, neither of them sure how to be around each other. A strange instinct in her gut screamed at her to say something… or run away— either option would be preferable to this awful limbo they were stuck in. At long last, Ethan set his cup down and cleared his throat.
“Our flight isn’t until tomorrow morning. I was thinking of heading downstairs and attending a few seminars.”
Lilac paused, unsure how to reply. The professional thing to do was letting him go his own way. Hell, she would probably benefit from burying herself in work. But the thought of sitting in long presentations or wandering the show floor made her muscles heavy with dread. There was something stubborn and unresolved between them and she knew she would know no peace until she addressed it head on.
“Actually,” she said before she lost her resolve. “I was thinking of taking a break from the conference…”
Ethan said nothing, waiting for her to continue. Lilac, meanwhile, gestured toward the floor-to-ceiling window framing the stunning Miami skyline. As the sun rose, it cast the sky into a mosaic of orange, pink, and blue. In the silence, they could hear the faint sounds of the city slowly coming to life to greet the day.
“I’ve never been to Miami before and today’s weather is supposed to be nice. Enjoying the city sounds a lot more enticing than being indoors all day.”
Ethan nodded once but said nothing more.
Swallowing, Lilac mustered the last dregs of her bravery. “Want to come with?”
He paused at that.
“Do you think that’s a good idea given…”
More of that unbearable silence ensued after he trailed off.
“Given what happened last night?” she finished for him.
Ethan’s face flushed with color and she would have found it adorable in any other situation. He remained stoic and silent nonetheless.
Lilac sighed. “Look, you don’t have to join me if you don’t want to,” she began. “But if we’re going to forget what happened last night, avoiding each other is not going to help.”
“Forget?” he asked quietly.
Their eyes met. His gaze pinned her in place, something intense swirling in their depths. Lilac looked away, unable to handle it.
“Move past it,” she amended. Then she rushed through—“We will still have to see each other everyday and for that to work, we need to learn how to be around one another again.”
Ethan nodded, considering her words.
“A reset,” he said.
Lilac shrugged. “If you want to call it that. I see it more as a break.”
He seemed on the verge of being convinced.
“When was the last time you took one of those?”
“I admit it’s been a while.”
“Then let’s change that.”
They strolled the streets of the city, admiring the vibrant colors of Miami. Everywhere Lilac looked, the air bloomed with color— the iconic art deco buildings they passed, the array of fruits in vendor stalls at the outdoor market, the vibrant art murals of Wynwood Walls. The city came alive in blooms of pinks, yellows, and blue. The bustling streets moved to the sounds of traffic, mixed with the rhythmic music drifting from the outdoor cafes they passed— salsa, merengue, bachata. It was all too familiar to Lilac yet new at the same time.
Ethan walked beside her, in complete silence at first. The vibrant promise that the city painted for them, however, eventually melted the tension between them.
“We have to go to Racoon Island,” Lilac said hours into their tour.
“No.”
“Come on! It’s an island full of racoons,” she insisted, turning her phone's screen for him to see the pictures.
“I gathered that,” Ethan said, unimpressed. “That is precisely why I want to stay as far away from it as possible.”
“You’re no fun,” she said with mock disappointment. In reality, Lilac didn’t care what they did next. She was just so relieved their dynamic felt almost back to normal.
They walked for a few more minutes before neither of them could resist the enticing smell of Cuban coffee wafting from the cafes all around. Soon, they found themselves seated in the outdoor patio of Café del Sol, a lively place facing the oceanfront. As they waited for their server, Ethan looked out at the waves, a pensive expression on his face.
“Where did you go?” Lilac asked quietly.
Ethan glanced at her, offering her a soft smile.
“Just... thinking. It’s been a while since I took time to do something like this. I’ve forgotten what it feels like to just... be.”
Lilac nodded, feeling a sense of connection that was almost painful. Their daily lives demanded so much from them that it was easy to completely lose all sense of self in the job. She too had forgotten what it was like to just enjoy the present moment without constant movement.
“It’s nice,” she agreed. “Just living in the moment.”
Ethan mulled over her words carefully. She could practically see the gears of his mind working. Almost as if by instinct, she knew he was thinking about last night and the road that had led to their kiss— living in the moment, forgetting about rules or duty.
“I’m enjoying it,” he finally allowed. “But things are still complicated. You and I—”
There it was.
“Please,” she said in an almost whisper. “I understand we need to be careful. And there’s a lot we need to figure out. But maybe … we don’t have to have all the answers yet.” She sighed. “Maybe just for today, we can just… exist.”
For the first time since last night, Ethan visibly relaxed. “I can do that.”
A woman in her mid-50s approached them with a warm smile. She had short, dark hair, a patterned apron tied neatly around her waist, and eyes that crinkled at the corners with the warmth of hospitality.
“Good morning,” she greeted in accented English, holding a small notepad in one hand. “What can I get for you two today? Café con leche, perhaps? Best in town.”
Lilac smiled politely. “Buenos días,” she replied, switching seamlessly into Spanish. “Sí, un café con leche suena perfecto. ¿Y también un cortadito para él?”
The woman’s eyes brightened immediately, a wide smile spreading across her face. “¡Ah! ¡Hablas español!” she exclaimed, clearly delighted. Her words flowed faster now, full of warmth and energy. “Qué bien, mi niña. Entonces, dos cafés, uno con leche y un cortadito para el caballero. ¿Algo más?”
Realizing just how hungry she was, Lilac ordered more food than the two could finish—tostones, ropa vieja, empanadas, croquetas, maduros.
Ethan leaned back in his chair, watching the interaction with amusement. When the woman left to put their order in, he said, “I didn’t know your Spanish was that good.”
Lilac gave him a teasing glance. “Really? I’ve helped patients in Spanish right in front of you.”
He tilted his head, his eyes narrowing slightly, as if searching his memory. “Yes, but… this is different,” he said, his voice softening. “You look happy. Relaxed. You look good.”
Lilac paused, the compliment catching her off guard. The weight of the last few days seemed to momentarily lift as she felt the warmth in his gaze. Despite her plea to just enjoy the moment, her foolish heart could not be dissuaded. Not when Ethan had a tendency to see her—truly see her.
An hour later, Ethan sat back in his chair, watching as Lilac playfully mocked his Spanish for the third time since their food arrived. He allowed himself a smile, the teasing, light banter a welcome change from the tension that had hovered between them. She was right, of course. Her Spanish was flawless, flowing effortlessly as she ordered from the café earlier, while his was more… functional. He could get by in medical settings, communicate well enough, but nowhere near her level of ease.
“I swear, it doesn’t get easier than café con leche,” Lilac teased, shaking her head, but there was nothing but warmth in her voice.
He chuckled. “You make it look easy, Rookie.”
Her laughter filled the space between them, and for a moment, it felt like everything had settled back to normal. They were just two colleagues, sharing a meal, enjoying a break from the usual demands of their field. But as he watched her smile and the way her green eyes sparkled when she was at ease, the weight of everything that had happened between them pressed down on his chest.
Last night.
God, last night.
He had wanted her for longer than Ethan was willing to admit even to himself. Somewhere along the line, the beautiful, intelligent, and intriguing Lilac Allende had woven herself into the fabric of his every thought. To this day, Ethan still couldn’t pinpoint the moment everything changed. For so long, he had kept himself in check, keeping his distance, hiding behind his professionalism. And yet, all those efforts crumbled the moment they kissed.
They finished their meal, the laughter and teasing slowly giving way to a comfortable silence.
Eventually, they wandered toward the beach, too full and drowsy from their meal to make much conversation. Ethan found he enjoyed the easy silence as they walked barefoot down the soft sand, shoes in hand. The peace of the moment served as a balm, soothing the restless thoughts that had been gnawing at him all night.
“Thanks for convincing me to go out,” Ethan finally said, breaking the silence. “We needed this… the break. Just… being.”
Lilac smiled, recognizing her words from earlier. “Yeah. I think we both did.”
For a while longer, they walked side by side, neither in a rush to leave the moment behind. But eventually, the weight of their restless night and the early morning flight that awaited them began to settle in. They turned back toward the hotel, the reality of their return looming closer with each step.
When they reached their hotel room door, Ethan paused. His hand hovered over the handle, his body still, as if frozen in place. He didn’t know why he stopped—he just knew that something inside him wasn’t ready to cross that threshold yet.
Lilac glanced at him, her brow furrowing slightly. “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t answer right away.
Ethan knew, the second they stepped through that door, this brief, blissful reprieve would be over. Their lives—complicated, professional, and full of boundaries—would unpause, and they’d go back to pretending nothing had happened between them.
Lilac seemed to understand, even without him saying it.
“It’ll be okay,” she said so quietly that Ethan thought he had imagined the words. “It has to be.”
But as Ethan stood there, watching her green eyes read his face, the realization hit him hard. It was foolish to think they needed a reset, a way to move past that kiss, to put it behind them. No matter how many boundaries and defenses he put up, there was no going back to the way they had been. At least, not for Ethan.
Stealing a day for themselves only strengthened the roots of Ethan’s admiration for her. Watching her today, seeing her so at ease, hearing her laugh, seeing her face lit up by the sun—it had only made him want her more.
More than he ever should.
And he knew that no matter how much they tried to pretend, no matter how hard he tried to pull away, he was far too gone now.
Note: I don't know what that was! I'm just getting myself back in the habit of writing. Thank you for joining me on this ride!

Hii 🥰
I saw this quote and thought it would maybe inspire you for a story or an edit 🥰

Hi Girlie!❤️I was looking through some of the prompts you've sent me, and a spark of inspiration hit me for this one, so I hammered out a quick fic this afternoon. 🤫Don't tell my boss.
Proud Parents
Book: Open Heart, Book 2 Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Category: Fluff Word count: 661 Summary: Alan visits Louise at the rehab center a few days after Ethan drops her off.
Alan rapped his knuckles on the frame of the open door. “Knock, knock… are you up for a visitor?”
“Alan, hi. Come in,” Louise greeted.
“These are for you,” he offered, handing her a small bouquet of pink flowers.
“Oh, Al, thank you. They’re so pretty. I love lilies.”
“Yes, I remember. How are you feeling, Lou?” he asked, taking in her new temporary living situation.
“I’ve been better, but I’ve also been a lot worse.”
Alan nodded his head in understanding. “This place is nice. I was expecting something more like a medical facility. This feels more like a hotel.”
“I was pleasantly surprised, too. It was very nice of Ethan to set me up here. Would you like to head to the lounge for some coffee?”
Alan extended his arm, gesturing for her to lead the way. “It was also kind of him to drive you here and help you get checked in. I hope you can appreciate how difficult that was for him, Lou,” he said as he followed her down the hall.
“I do, and I'm grateful." She sighed, "Truth be told, I would have preferred it to be just the two of us, but he insisted his girlfriend come along.”
Alan took a seat on a nearby couch as Louise poured them each a cup of joe. “Oh? He hadn't mentioned that, but I'm glad Sawyer was there for him.”
“Still like it with cream?” she asked, holding up the container.
“Please,” he answered. “What did you think of her?”
“She was very…” she thought for a minute, trying to find the right word, “protective of him.”
Alan smiled to himself as Louise handed him the coffee and sat in the armchair next to him. “Good.”
“He seemed pretty protective of her, too,” she admitted. “I confess I wasn’t very polite, and he let me have it.”
“Makes sense, especially since the attack at the hospital.”
Louise looked down into her coffee cup with a regretful frown. “I remember you mentioning that, but honestly, I was a little out of it at the time. I don't recall any of the details, only that Ethan had been there. Was Sawyer there, too?”
“Yes,” he answered morosely. “She was one of the victims… she was at death’s door, but thankfully pulled through.”
“Oh, I didn't know that.” As Alan recapped some of the details, Louise was surprised to hear how harrowing the event had been. “How scary for them both. I can’t even imagine.”
Alan nodded slowly, then glanced reflectively out the window at the snow beginning to fall. “It rattled him, Lou,” he said. “Between the attack and your overdose, it's been a lot.” He returned his gaze to his estranged wife. “He still carries an enormous amount of hurt. Give him time and grace to navigate through it all.”
Feeling guilty, Louise nodded and looked down at her coffee again.
Attempting to lift the mood, Alan shared, “Sawyer's been a good influence on him. She's a real sweetheart and isn't afraid to go toe to toe with him.”
Louise took a sip and shook her head with a knowing smile. “Lord, he was such a headstrong and stubborn child.”
“You have no idea, Lou,” Alan chuckled, then added, “but he was a good kid. And he's become an even better man. I couldn't be more proud.”
“I know I don’t know him like you, but I’m proud of him too. And I’m thankful he had you, Al. You did an amazing job raising him.”
Alan dipped his chin in thanks, trying not to get emotional.
“So, have they been together long?” Louise asked, bringing them back to lighter conversation again.
“They've known each other for a little bit, but their relationship is still relatively new. It took a while for his stubborn ass to catch up with his heart.”
“That makes sense. He looks at her like he just realized what love is.”
Alan smiled joyfully. “Because I think he finally has.”

Inevitably Inevitable
Premise: Ethan and Cassie receive a surprise performance during their wedding reception.
Fandom: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine); feat. M!OC characters Rating/Category: Teen. Fluff. Words: 950
A/N: I was watching some wedding dance videos on TikTok, and it inspired this fun little fic. Enjoy!
The ballroom in the Newport mansion was the perfect backdrop for a fairytale wedding. Cassie Valentine had dreamed of celebrating her special day in her family’s home for as long as she could remember.
Her mother had gone all out to give her only daughter exactly what she wanted — an intimate wedding ceremony in the gardens overlooking the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a reception in the beautifully decorated ballroom that echoed the elegance of the Gilded Age.
Sipping champagne, her toes tapped to the upbeat music still playing over the speakers, even as the DJ took a well-deserved break.
She loved to dance, and her friends and family had happily joined her on the dance floor. Her husband had bowed out following two slow dances, one of which was their first dance as husband and wife.
Ethan Ramsey wasn’t a bad dancer when he put his mind to it, but he wasn’t one to bust a move either.
She’d spotted him every now and then, chatting with his father and Naveen, laughing with her dad, and enjoying whiskey with her brother and male cousins.
But that had been a while ago, she thought, her brow furrowing with concern.
Cassie craned her neck, scanning the edges of the crowd for him. She smiled as he slipped his arms around her from behind, his familiar scent enveloping her as he kissed the top of her shoulder.
“Looking for me?” he whispered, his warm breath tickling her ear.
Before Cassie could reply, the lights dimmed just enough to cast a soft, curious hush over the guests, who began looking around, waiting for something to happen.
“I wonder what’s going on,” she murmured, trying to recall the plans her mom and Sienna had shared earlier.
Across the room, her bestie Sienna looked perplexed as the music abruptly shut off.
Then—BOOM—the opening chords of Backstreet Boys’ “Backstreet’s Back” exploded through the speakers, the DJ back in position.
At the center of the dance floor, her twin Max stepped forward dramatically—sans suit jacket, sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He held a finger to his invisible headset mic like he was about to headline Madison Square Garden.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he announced, a mischievous grin lighting up his face, “this one’s for our bride and groom. We’ve been waiting a long time for this. All eight weeks, in fact, ever since these two crazy kids decided to upend our summer plans with their runaway marriage.”
He winked at his sister, then turned to her husband.
“Ethan… this is payback for making us sit through four years of ‘will-they-won’t-they’ tension, and Cassie’s ‘but we’re inevitable’ refrain.”
He mimicked Cassie’s dreamy tone with a dramatic eye-roll, and laughter rippled through the room.
From either side of the dance floor, her cousins Tony and Brandon strutted in like they were entering a boy band reunion tour, followed by her oldest friend Mike, who unbuttoned his blazer mid-walk with the intensity of a backup dancer who finally got his moment.
The crowd let out an audible “Ooooh!” as the beat dropped, and the guys hit their first move in perfect sync, shoulder rolls and hip pops matching the groove.
Ethan’s jaw dropped. Cassie immediately collapsed into giggles, leaning back against her new husband, thoroughly entertained.
Synchronized chest pops, body rolls, finger jabs. It was equal parts dance routine and public roast.
“Am I original?” Tony threw his arms wide as he played to the crowd.
“Am I the only one?” Mike crooned, tilting his head toward Cassie with an exaggerated smolder.
Max took center stage, mouthing along to the lyrics with exaggerated intensity. “Am I… sexual?”
He pointed straight at Ethan.
The crowd lost it. Ethan shook his head, half mortified, half impressed. Cassie choked on her champagne.
In perfect formation, the guys nailed the classic slide, one arm out, hip thrust and smoldering stare before pausing dramatically.
“Ethan,” said Tony, “we just want to thank you for finally realizing Cassie was your soulmate.”
“Took you long enough.” Brandon rolled his eyes. “She was doodling your name in her notebooks since college.”
Mike winked at Ethan, then shared an amused smirk with Cassie.
“We thought we were going to have to blackmail you just to make this wedding happen.”
Cassie was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes.
Then Max stepped forward again and belted out, “CASSIE’S BACK—ALRIGHT!”
The guys launched into the final chorus, throwing in pelvic thrusts, finger twirls, dramatic squats, and expressions so overacted, they’d make any boy band proud.
Mid-performance, they ripped off their button-downs to reveal matching T-shirts.
Max: “The Twin with the Moves” Tony: “The Better Looking Cousin” Brandon: “Backup Cousin #2 (Still Hot)” Mike: “Cassie’s First Crush”
They twirled around, perfectly in sync, revealing the letters stretched across the backs of all four shirts.
“TEAM INEVITABLE: SINCE DAY ONE.”
The room erupted.
Cassie placed two fingers in her mouth and let out a sharp whistle, then clapped over her head in appreciation.
Max, a little breathless but grinning like a kid, bowed. “Only the best for my sister. And her ridiculously lucky husband.”
Cassie hugged them one by one, tears of laughter clinging to her lashes. “You guys are the worst—and the best.”
Still smiling from the spectacle, Ethan reached out to shake hands with each of them. “I deserved that.”
Max clasped Ethan’s hands tightly. “You sure did. We’ve been waiting to do this for years.”
“Will I ever live this down?” Ethan said, pulling Cassie close.
“Oh, absolutely not,” Sienna said with a laugh, rushing towards them, waving her phone in the air. “This is already my new favorite video.”

Processing and Developing
(Ethan x F!MC) (Tobias Carrick x F!MC) in a Choices Open Heart one shot.
Taken from Book 3, Ines's wedding reception.
This one's for you, @jerzwriter 😉 I haven't forgotten our need for more Tobias. It's not good, but I finally broke the writer's block, LOL!
Masterlist
A/N I finally wrote something! 🤣 This idea came about last night when replaying Book 3. I always opt to have my MC, Chris, take a photo of just her and Tobias at Ines's wedding reception. Originally, I hoped this scene would open up a romance option with Tobias. Sadly, PB didn't give it to me, LOL, so this is how I wish things had gone down canon wise.

"You look like you could use this."
Chris turned around at the familiar voice. Her eyes darted over how handsome the man before her looked dressed to the nines in his blue suit. Humor lurked in the hazel depths of his eyes as he in turn noticed her taking every inch of him in.
Tobias exaggerated clearing his throat. He held up the two fruity cocktails in his hands and playfully shook one.
Chris smiled in response while reaching for the glass that had cherries and a pineapple spear sitting on the rim.
Tobias lifted it out of her reach.
He clucked his tongue in mock disapproval. "Hold on. You know what you have to do to earn this."
Chris's smile dimmed. She wasn't certain if it was the fact they were guests at Ines's romantic Hawaiian wedding or that her hopeful imagination was getting the better of her again. Something though was different between Tobias and herself. The pair had always bantered back and forth and enjoyed the sharp wit of the other. Somehow along the way, the teasing took on a slight sexual edge.
She couldn't help but think he was attractive. Even when she first deemed him the enemy the year before, she found him incredibly sexy. Now that she was coming to know the type of man he truly was, she knew she was falling hard for Tobias.
She wasn't the only one feeling this way.
Tobias had been playing the long game with Chris. He'd thought her cute the first time he'd seen her at Leland Bloom's home. Going head to head with her and Ethan had been one of more enjoyable aspects of his job. Each time he saw her after that, though she glared at him, made him want to know her even more.
After the attack, her attitude changed towards him. He found himself the recipient of her warm smiles and good natured teasing. Even while fighting for her life, she never lost her sense of humor.
He admired her spirit, her mind, and to no one who knew him's surprise, her body.
The moment he joined Edenbrook's diagnostic team, he was finally able to see if his brief impressions of Chris were accurate. The more time he spent with her, the more he saw why there were a few at Edenbrook with feelings for her. She made it easy to fall head over heels.
Normally, he'd have already made his move. Given their close work relationship and the fact he suspected Ethan and Chris had an interesting past, he held back. When it came to Chris, he didn't want any competition, whether it be a literal person or one of secret pining for said person.
If things were to work out like he thought, he'd want Chris's heart and mind for himself. There would be no other way he could be with her.
It's odd, he thought to himself. Normally I'd be all for having her without any expectations or even caring if she wanted someone else.
But now...
"What do I have to do?" Chris interrupted his thoughts.
A slight blush graced her cheeks from the way he was looking at her.
Tobias pointed towards the photo booth.
One look at his suspicious smile made Chris double over with laughter.
"You found the box of props, didn't you?" She asked between giggles.
"You bet I did." He chuckled. "What do you say we drag Ethan and Harper in there and get a team photo."
"You really think you can get Ethan to don a wig and clown nose?" She asked.
"Nope." He grinned at her. "Even I'm not that persuasive."
"I don't know," she teased. "From my experience, you have quite a way about you."
Her smile grew the longer she looked at him.
"You've already got me agreeing to not only get in that photo booth, but also help you convince our more serious team members to join us."
"Then my charm is finally being used for good." He handed her a cocktail with a wink. "Let's take a dose of liquid courage and make our attack."
*************
"No." Ethan told them. "I prefer to keep my dignity intact."
"Dignity is overrated." Tobias teased.
Harper shook her head over that statement. "I'm all for a team photo, but I would like it to represent us in a more positive, respectful light."
Chris rolled her eyes. "Honestly, I think having such a picture would show our patients we're people too, ones with an excellent sense of humor."
"Our patients don't care about whether or not we have a sense of humor." Ethan argued. "They only want us to make them feel better. Nothing more, nothing less."
"Spoil sports." Tobias muttered. "Well Chris, it's up to me and you to show these two how to have fun."
Harper snorted in amusement. "I'll take my fun with getting another drink."
She waved goodbye on her way to the open bar.
Before he could engage the pair in a conversation, Ethan watched as Tobias grabbed Chris's hand and dragged her into the booth. His brow furrowed when he noticed they'd forgotten to grab props for their fun photo.
Curious about what they were doing behind the closed curtain, he went to watch the line of photos start to appear.
The first photo was of the two of them laughing. The second one had a more normal smile. The third one made him pause. The pair were looking at each other in a way he didn't want to contemplate. In fact, the image showed that Tobias was looking at the young lady beside him as if seeing her for the very first time.
Ethan's feelings for Chris had never died. If anything, they'd gotten stronger over time. He worked hard to keep things professional and continued to keep her at arm's length. It was difficult given how often they were together at work, but he knew it was for the best.
The fourth picture made his heart sink. The two in the booth were closer than before with heads tilted as if they were about to--
"Ethan?"
He spun away from his worst fears developing in the fifth picture. Harper eyed him for a few seconds before moving to see what held his attention.
Her eyes widened over the photograph of Tobias and Chris sharing a passionate kiss.
"Oh!" She exclaimed. "I had no idea they were together."
A muscle spasmed in Ethan's jaw.
"Excuse me." He bit out.
He left the reception with quick strides. The sound of the waves hitting the shore nor the warm breeze blowing did little to calm the emotions roiling within. He wished his curiosity had not gotten the better of him. Tonight could have ended with him simply dreaming about all the things he would have liked to have done with Chris if they'd been a couple.
Ethan briefly closed his eyes. He knew exactly how their night would have gone.
He would have been her date to the wedding. There would have been hints that one day they might like to have a destination wedding like Ines and Angie. They'd have spent the reception basking in the romantic atmosphere. Slow dances would have been shared. Flirting would have led to them slipping away shortly before the cake was cut.
Chris would have teased him that he better make it up to her for missing out on wedding cake. Ethan would have done so with a moon lit walk on the beach followed by retiring to their shared suite. He'd then have spent the entire night making love to her, proving that his heart was fully hers.
Ethan shook himself out of his pointless thoughts. He'd made his choice two years earlier. He could have had everything he wanted if he'd only considered that Chris was different from any other woman he'd known. Now he was left with longing for what might have been.
He eased into the shadows when he heard footsteps combined with Chris's laughter approaching.
"And just where are you taking me, Dr. Carrick?" Chris asked with a flirty lilt to her voice.
"Someplace where we can't be interrupted." Tobias paused to pull her back into his arms.
The two shared a deep kiss.
A moan, Ethan recalled all too well having once in his life caused, slipped out of Chris. That sound was embedded in his mind. He never imagined hearing another man cause it. It hurt worse than he could have imagined, knowing it wasn't because of his own lips touching hers.
"I think I know what's going to happen when we get behind a locked door." She said softly, all teasing gone. "But what happens when the sun rises?"
Ethan winced at the memory of Chris asking him that very question years ago. After a night proving how perfectly they fit together in every single fashion, he responded that they would go back to their lives as if nothing had happened between them.
He couldn't see his former best friend and roommate wanting anything more than a one night stand. Perhaps, Ethan could still hold on to what he longed for most in this world.
Tobias shocked him with his response.
"I will take you out for breakfast." He pressed a tender kiss to her lips. "That way we can talk about our new relationship."
Chris stilled.
"Relationship?" She asked hesitantly.
"I want more than tonight with you." Tobias held her close. "I want you to be mine, no one else's."
Ethan watched Chris's face fill with joy. With a slight gasp, she kissed Tobias with all the love she'd kept for the one who could give her what she wanted.
The new couple hurried into the hotel.
Ethan moved out of the shadows. He couldn't quite wrap his head around all that had occurred within the last hour.
Why didn't I ask Chris to dance earlier? Why didn't I agree to do the asinine picture? Would it have stopped her getting with Tobias?
He knew that Bryce had gone after Chris. Seeing them together hadn't hurt. Bryce was completely different from Ethan. Though they were both doctors, their studies didn't line up. He knew he'd never have Bryce's fun loving swagger. In his eyes, he knew it wasn't a competition between them for Chris's affection.
With Tobias, it was a huge blow to Ethan's ego. The two were too similar. Both were highly intelligent, loved the mystery diagnostics allowed them to pursue, and they had similar temperaments.
"Not anymore." Ethan muttered to himself.
Tobias had changed these last ten years. He still was driven with his love of a good mystery, but he no longer lost his temper as quickly as he once had. There was no need to one-up Ethan over every single thing.
Ethan realized that Tobias had become a man he would actually enjoy being close to again.
How could he now? The man was with the woman he desperately loved.
"There you are!" Harper jogged up the path.
"Looking for me?" Ethan asked.
"I was worried about you." She admitted.
"I'm fine." He replied.
"Ethan." She gently touched his cheek. "It's me. You know you can talk to me. I can see you're upset."
He blinked, stepping away from her.
"I'm not upset." He snapped.
Her eyes narrowed. "I saw you and I saw what happened in that photo booth."
Ethan stiffened after shoving his hands in his pockets. He tried to walk away from someone else confirming his heartache. Harper was having none of it.
She placed a hand on his chest and stepped directly into his path.
"I saw, Ethan." She repeated. "I've seen how you look at Chris. Does she know you're in love with her?"
Ethan averted his eyes. Shaking his head, he heaved a deep sigh.
Harper softened her tone. "Why didn't you tell her?"
"There were many reasons." He muttered. "Though, none of them seem important now."
"You could still tell her." Harper argued. "What we saw was probably nothing more than just two people giving in to the romance of the evening. Tomorrow you can--"
He shook his head, silencing her halfhearted attempt to cheer him up.
"It's too late." He swallowed. "I've uh, I've burned a lot of bridges between me and Chris."
He glanced up at the hotel, wondering which room she was in.
"Someone else came along and gave her what she wanted."
Harper wrapped her arms around him in a comforting hug.
He didn't return it. After a few seconds, he untangled himself from her embrace.
"Ethan? It will get easier."
"Perhaps." He conceded. "For right now, I need to be alone."
He began to walk inside of the hotel. He knew it would be a torturous night in his lonely suite. He anticipated having many miserable nights the next few months since he now possessed front row seats for Chris and Tobias's new relationship. He knew deep down that no matter how much time passed, his heart would never fully heal.
When it came to Chris, it would always hurt.
