The Numerous Lovely Daughters of Lord Hyle Cuy

Esther. Known to be an ambitious woman with high social aspirations. In her youth she expected to inherit Sunhouse, but was removed of her heiress title when Hyle's second marriage produced a son. It's said Esther's relationship with her father soured and never recovered thereafter. At the height of their falling out Hyle refused to seek out a new match for her after her previous arranged marriage fell through. Esther eventually married into House Malus, going on to have three daughters of her own. She passed at age forty of a prolonged illness.

Laurane. A proper lady of the Reach, Laurane was famed for her beauty and charm. Traits that earned her an advantageous match to a branch of House Hightower, the Cuy’s liege lords. This increase in prestige seemed to cause a rift between Esther and Laurane, though anyone who knew the sisters would tell they weren’t close to begin with. Laurane has had four children to date: three boys and a daughter.

Myranda. The most independent and willful of Hyle’s daughters, Myranda created a stir following Laurane’s impressive marriage when she was engaged to a knight from House Santagar. A house of landed knights, the Santagars were a clear decline in the quality of matches for the Cuys. A fact that sent the gossipmongers of the Reach into a frenzy. Despite public opinion, Myranda seemed to content in Dorne with her two sons.

Cecily. The youngest of four girls with no inheritance and a fourth of a dowry Cecily's marriage prospects weren't the best. Almost as if to not be out done by her older sister, she caused an even larger scandal when she married outside the gentry altogether. She married a wealthy merchant with no title at all. If the gossip is to be believed, the couple ran away one night and weren’t seen again until they appeared in the Crownlands, boasting loudly of their marriage. The pair now reside in a grand estate in King’s Landing, where Cecily enjoys her position as a salacious socialite with no children to care for as of yet.

Thousands of people have gathered to protest in cities and towns in Kenya against the recent slayings of more than a dozen women.

The anti-femicide demonstration on Saturday was the largest event ever held in the country against sexual and gender-based violence.

In the capital, Nairobi, protesters wore T-shirts printed with the names of women who became homicide victims this month. The crowd, composed mostly of women, brought traffic to a standstill.

“Stop killing us!” the demonstrators shouted as they waved signs with messages such as “There is no justification to kill women.”

The crowd in Nairobi was hostile to attempts by the parliamentary representative for women, Esther Passaris, to address them. Accusing Passaris of remaining silent during the latest wave of killings, protesters shouted her down with chants of “Where were you?” and “Go home!”

“A country is judged by not how well it treats its rich people, but how well it takes care of the weak and vulnerable,” said Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri, who was among the demonstrators.

Kenyan media outlets have reported the slayings of at least 14 women since the start of the year, according to Patricia Andago, a data journalist at media and research firm Odipo Dev who also took part in the march.

Odipo Dev reported this week that news accounts showed at least 500 women were killed in acts of femicide from January 2016 to December 2023. Many more cases go unreported, Andago said.

Two cases that gripped Kenya this month involved two women who were killed at Airbnb accommodations. The second victim was a university student who was dismembered and decapitated after she reportedly was kidnapped for ransom.

Theuri said cases of gender-based violence take too long to be heard in Kenyan court, which he thinks emboldens perpetrators to commit crimes against women.

“As we speak right now, we have a shortage of about 100 judges. We have a shortage of 200 magistrates and adjudicators, and so that means that the wheel of justice grinds slowly as a result of inadequate provisions of resources,” he said.

after esther has kidnapped the boys, and the girls come to save them, i think the characters take on their fairy tale archetype

charles, who views himself as having to protect others in order to deserve existing (and feels a particular responsibility to edwin) takes on the role of the Hero. he goes down to the dangerous cavern and slays the snake, alone. he wears red (associated with bravery) and uses a literal sword to defeat the monster. he is the Hero, because he thinks he has to be

niko, who cares mostly about helping people, sacrifices herself to help crystal and takes on the role of the Innocent. she does not have to die. she has no reason to die. but she chooses to, to save her friend. and that is what is tragic about it. she is the Innocent because she chooses to be, to save her friend

crystal, who is psychic, takes on the role of the Good Witch. she is juxtaposed against esther's Evil Witch. though crystal has always had her powers, it is not until she "deals" with david that she is able to properly tap into her witch-like powers (beyond psychic visions). this is the natural conclusion of her character arc; though fighting off tooth-face was a very cathartic moment for her, i think she had to come toe to toe with her antithesis (another woman, wronged by men, using her witch powers for evil). she is the Good Witch because she witnessed what she could become and decided she did not want to be

edwin's life has been nothing but pain and suffering. he takes on the role of the Victim. he is forced to watch, helpless, as his friend is murdered; he is forced to relive all the pain of hell, over and over. his agency is removed and he is limited to, in essence, a damsel in distress. but, he also survives. a key aspect of the 'damsel in distress' is that the damsel is in distress, but she survives it. edwin goes through immense pain, but he survives it. he has to. it's his role in the story. but also, edwin is resigned to the Victim because his season's character arc is mostly resolved. the final battle is not for him. so, edwin is the Victim, because he has to be. he does not choose it, it is thrust upon him. but, i may add, that he is also the Victim because he has full confidence that he will not always be the Victim. edwin operates under the knowledge that, a) he escaped hell twice, and b) he is in a very committed friendship with the most loyal ghost around. edwin must know he won't be resigned to victimhood forever, which is, in part, why he survives

anyway, yeah, i'd argue that episode eight really takes everyone's previous characteristics and magnifies them -as conflict is bound to- but i also think that it specifically plays into their archetypes, and how the characters perceive themselves. the characters created their own destinies and determined their own final positions based on their perceptions of the self: the hero, the innocent, the witch, and the victim.

So I Spied Another Day...

You know it was a good show when you can’t decide whether your heart is so full from all the love and joy, or so empty because it's over.

Really do buckle up, because this is a long one.

So the show went a little like this. They played the Spies pro-shoot on a giant movie screen, but any time a song started, the audio changed to the instrumental track, the video typically faded to simple background graphics, and the cast came out to perform the number live in concert style. There were also a series of audience participation prompts up on the movie screen, such as standing to deliver a line in unison, giving Lauren a standing ovation for the Pay Attention! Reprise, enthusiastically booing Dr. Baron von Nazi and the still infuriatingly catchy Not So Bad (for anyone who’s curious, in addition to encouraging boos and yelled disagreements with von Nazi, they also cut the audience participation bit from the song).

The energy in the room was so electric and full of joy and warmth. People shouted out iconic lines, went wild for everyone’s entrances, and absolutely lost their damn minds over Curtwen at pretty much every opportunity. And the cast were clearly having just as much fun. Doing This has always been my favorite, and there was something so sweet about them singing it again all these years later. We finally got Joey performing Spies Are Forever (Evil Reprise) again and it was just as chilling and beautiful as you’d expect. And One Step Ahead was just on a whole new level. I don’t want to give anything away, but the details in that performance were INCREDIBLE.

It was simply so special seeing most of the original gang come back while also bringing some new friends along. Shout out to Mariah for coming out at the top of the show so ready to play, setting the tone for the whole evening. Shout out to James for putting his comedy chops on full display (LET JAMES BE FUNNY MORE) and dancing the hell out of One More Shot (another favorite number). And shoutout to Carlos Alazraqui (taking over the roles of Sergio and Vladimir Poopin) and Tommy Link for coming into this crazy part of our world with such enthusiasm and silliness. Brian deserves a medal for agreeing to once again play the most cringe-worthy character in all of Pulp-StarCanWrecked history, and for sounding so fucking good while doing it. Tessa was having a blast in full unhinged glory and I gladly worship at her altar. Lauren is maybe the funniest person alive and deserved her standing ovation, prompted or not. Seeing Joe Walker perform live has been Item Number One on my fandom bucket list since I moved to LA a couple of years ago, and I still can’t quite believe I managed it. I’d wondered if he’d be rusty, but honestly he sounded great; it was like no time had passed. Mary Kate still has one of my all-time favorite voices and her Tatiana remains forever engaging. Joey showed up dressed to slay as a gay evil genius Bond-movie supervillain and proceeded to thoroughly deliver on that promise. And Curt… every time I watch Spies I am increasingly blown away by what he does with this arrogant, broken mess of a character. He clearly loves Agent Mega as much as any of us, and to see a performance refined and powered by such clear and thoughtful passion is just a huge treat.

(And while he wasn’t in the cast, I can’t not mention Corey. Between his roles as director and co-writer, so much of what Spies is comes directly from him and we don’t appreciate that nearly enough. And shout out to Esther Fallick for her wonderful work as Susan and the Informant. She might not have been there in person, but her incredible performance was with us the whole time.)

I know this is preaching to the choir, but Spies Are Forever really is such a special show. It’s a story about recovery, and devastating as it can be, I think there’s also something deeply healing about it at its core. For one thing, I know it played a huge role in mending my relationship with my asexuality. I will forever be grateful to it for existing, to TCB, Talkfine, and the original cast for creating it, and to those same people for maintaining its legacy with the amount of love and care it deserves. It was a privilege to be in the room as so many people came to celebrate this miraculous little musical. There were a couple of minor tech glitches (I wonder if they’ll even include the “big one”—the projector jumping over most of the staircase scene before getting fixed—in the digital ticket version), but nothing that could even begin to damper the magic of the night.

We all know that spies never die (except for Owen and the Informant, oops). And at times like this concert, I think this special little show with its short run in 2016 will prove to be just as immortal.

☆ Imagine meeting the two for the first time and you genuinely cannot speak because they're both a little too gorgeous, I mean, Edwin slays his outfit and Charles has the biggest brown eyes. Pretty boys fr

★ I just think that, if you're another ghost, Edwin would like you more at first, if you're alive, Charles would (because of the whole Charles hates being dead thing and Edwin doesn't like being around the living)

☆ In this scenario, let's play with you being alive and (mostly) well. Involved in one of their cases, maybe, or you went into Jennys shop to get meat or something (if you don't eat meat pretend you're cooking a meal for a friend or something)

★ Probably immediately you kinda notice a strange aura (totally not Charles staring you down because he's never seen someone as cool and swag as you) - and let's be honest you aren't even surprised when you meet Crystal and she's looking at the corner all weird.

☆ meeting them again however, you probably just had some near death experience (maybe you wandered into a haunted house, or you somehow got involved in the whole Esther business) and you probably don't even care that ghosts exist because yeah, kinda checks out

★ Charles is probably immediately on your heel (Edwin is just the tiniest bit jealous) asking you all sorts of questions (Edwin is just the tiniest bit interested as well)

☆ getting to know them better, Edwin finds he quite likes yapping about cases with you (my autistic ghost boy needs someone that ACTUALLY listens to what he says) he will be overjoyed if he starts talking about a case and you go "Oh wasn't that the one where.." because yes!! It was that case! You remembered!! Good job!!!

★ I feel like the whole relationship would come along naturally at some point. Just you complaining how you can't sleep because your pillow is too warm and both of them offering to stay with you since ghosts are pretty cold

☆ they have the mutual agreement that they're somewhat sharing your affection since you give both of them the same. They'll just have conversations like "did you already tell them [...]" and "Oh, yeah I did could you do [...] for them?" Already being fully in the mindset of 'we can and will make this work with three people'

★ I think Charles would actually have a more difficult time when the relationship officially starts though. He just has so much affection for you and Edwin that he's almost bursting, but Edwin doesn't always like touch so he has ti be careful and look for the signs and you actually have to keep yourself up and cared for instead of being able to cuddle 24/7

☆ Just a silly boy struggling with not kissing and hugging both his partners at all times (though he has two hands, and will be the middle part whenever the three of you walk somewhere.)

☆ Edwin is more a acts of service type of guy while Charles, obviously, is big on physical touch, so whenever Charles holds you back from doing laundry or the dishes, Edwin will do it for you so you can chill out

★ doesn't mean you don't do things for the boys, though. You regularly get books for Edwin (which he's happier about that he shows) and always give Charles the chance to talk to you without any judgement (same goes for Edwin, though he doesn't use that offer as often as Charles)

☆ Imagine Charles rescuing Edwin from hell and that night the three cuddle up with each other even though Edwin and Charles don't sleep, just so you can hold both of them to make sure they're still there and well
