Best Oils for Dogs: What Kinds of Oils To Use For Your Dog
Dogs are a lot like us. They need to eat healthy, exercise, and get enough sleep. Just like us, dogs also need essential oils for various reasons. Essential oils can be used for everything from acting as an insect repellent to as a calming agent for anxiety. If you want to know the best oils for dogs, then this blog post will show you how!
Tumblr media
What Kind of Oil to Use
First of all, it's important to know that the type of essential oil that you use matters. The best oil for a dog's health is not necessarily the same type of oil that's best for your human. So you'll need to read the labels and compare them to other dog-friendly essential oils. Also, essential oils can be combined in several different ways. Some essential oils can also be diluted. This means that you can mix the essential oils together in a carrier oil (vegetable, olive, coconut, or even coconut oil) and use it as a moisturizer or scent diffuser. Here are the different types of essential oils that can be used on your dog:
All of the essential oils listed in this blog post can be used as a stand-alone, or mixed with other essential oils : Best oils for dogs
 Essential Oils for Your Dog
Essential oils have become very popular over the past few years because they have been known to work in some miraculous ways on many different health problems. Here are some essential oils that will be beneficial to your dog and are recommended by certified dog parents! Grape Seed Extract This essential oil is popular among those who have allergies and asthma. It can help your dog to tolerate both airborne allergens and allergens that come from soil. It is also used to help your dog fight germs and viruses. Some people also put grape seed extract on their pets’ skin to treat skin allergies. This essential oil can also be used to help alleviate respiratory problems. This is especially important in dogs who have chronic congestion or respiratory infections.
How to Use Your Essential Oil
Here are some of the best oils that are used on dogs and all of the ways you can use them. Dried Citrus Oils Lemon and lime are the most common oils for using on dogs. You can either add them to a product you’re feeding your dog or put them on your healthy dog food. They work because they have citric acid that will kill insects and are also beneficial to your dog’s coat. You can get them in pure form or in little droplets. You can also get them in different levels of strength. Make sure you read the label carefully before adding anything to your dog’s food or treats.
 Conclusion
Dogs are man’s best friend. They are living, breathing, talking and smelling reminders of God’s grace. They often love other dogs as much as they love their human family members. They can also be pretty savage, especially to other dogs. They’ll eat anything and even each other. But when you use essential oils, they’ll prefer that you give them a little love instead of some solid food!

One week in the Amazon
The Amazon. My Holy Grail of travel plans for the last 5 or so years. Initially we had a grand tour planned to go by boat from Ecuador to Peru, to Colombia, to Brazil, but travel restrictions tightened more and more as the winter rolled on, the “Brazil variant” steamed ahead, the more remote boarder crossings became less feasible. So the international aspect of our Amazon expedition was not meant to be.
Ultimately, after providing another 72hr negative PCR test for the local authorities, we made it into the Amazon basin via the Napo river in eastern Ecuador’s Yasuni national park. There are a number of high end jungle lodges scattered about the Amazon, and I’d looked into them previously, but they were all prohibitively expensive. Then comes a global pandemic and turns out there are good deals to be had. So we stayed at Napo Wildlife Center for about half of what it would have cost pre-covid.
We left from Coca (which sadly is now largely described as an oil town), took a 2hr power boat down the Napo river, then another hour and a half rowboat down a narrower and shallower channel to arrive at the Napo Wildlife lodge on lake Anangu. The lodge is owned and run by the Kichwa Anangu community, one of the country’s ethnic minorities. Many of the tourist operations in the Ecuadorian Amazon are owned by outsiders, so Napo Wildlife is an exception in that all profits stay local for reinvestment in education and healthcare in the Kichwa community.
Our time there was incredible. The specifics of how we filled the 4 days/3 nights hardly convey the experience. We went on jungle walks at the crack of dawn (when the animals are most active), meandered about on canoe, climbed to canopy viewing platforms, sat at the clay licks watching the parrots and macaws up close, etc, etc. But most significantly, in all that we did, the jungle surrounded continually. The heavy air and film of sweat. The rare warm breeze. Our boots clapping in the thick mud. The sounds of the squawking; the buzzing; the clicks; the shrieks; the beeps; the flapping wings; the water glugging; the howls; the leaves rustling; the singing birds; the whining birds; the charging boars etc etc. All the jungle’s bristling life.

Parrots and Macaws at the clay lick
Highlights were: discovering the lake’s family of giant otters had welcomed a new baby otter among them, seeing hundreds of parrots frenzied over a mineral clay lick all at once, bracing for a sudden stop on discovering a stalking caiman 10ft in front of our canoe, watching the endemic golden tamarind monkey at play in the trees.
All that said, it’s not for everyone either. The bugs are a unavoidable fact. The lodge undoubtedly went to all ends to keep them at bay, and we used DEET 100 repellent ourselves, yet there they were. And the humidity is unreal. I was either within reach of a fan, or sweating... or both. Is what it is.
Leaving Napo Wildlife lodge we went further west along the Napo river to Tena, one of Ecuador’s larger towns in the Amazon. We stayed at a great lodge outside of town and the owner took us white water rafting on the Napo, which was a lot of fun. Also this lodge was using compost toilets, a first for both of us. Compost toilets are essentially doin the business in a deep bucket and throwing wood chips on top. The owner accredited his beautiful landscaping to his effective composting.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR EYE ALLERGIES
Tumblr media
While often thought of as the same thing, eye allergies can be different from eye pain and pink eye. Be sure to check out Natural Remedies for Eye Pain and Tea Bags – A Natural Remedy for Pink Eye.
Eye allergies can really put a damper on anyone’s day. It can cause irritation and itchiness. It can even lead to infections, like pink eye. There are a lot of natural remedies for eye allergies, but let’s look at what causes them first!
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF EYE ALLERGIES?
Most eye allergies are caused by these common factors:
Pollen
Weeds
Grasses
Dust Mites
Pets (Especially cats and dogs)
Mold
Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis (SAC) is caused by the outdoor allergens and Perennial Allergic Conjunctivitis (PAC) is usually caused by indoor allergens.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF EYE ALLERGIES
While itching and irritation are the most common symptoms of eye allergies, you can also watch out for the following:
Redness
Tearing
Burning Sensation
Matted eyes especially upon waking
Mucous Production
Mild Swelling Around The Eyes
TOP NATURAL REMEDIES FOR EYE ALLERGIES
The top natural remedy, according to HealthLine.com is actually very simple:
Keep your windows closed. This is especially important in the morning when pollen is at its heaviest.
This goes for both your home windows and your car windows – keep them closed!
OTHER NATURAL REMEDIES FOR EYE ALLERGIES:
Wear wraparound glasses or sunglasses to keep the pollen out of your eyes.
Place a cool compress over your eyes to soothe swelling and/or irritation. You can use frozen vegetables, or even chilled cucumber slices!
Soothe your eyes with tea bags. After you make a nice cup of chamomile tea, fully cool the tea bags and place them on your eyes. If it is pink eye you are concerned about, be sure to use black tea bags. See Tea Bags –  A Natural Remedy for Pink Eye.
Try apple cider vinegar! Place a tablespoon of APC into a cup of water, mix and then, dip some cotton balls into it. Rub the solution around your eyes for relief. Be careful not to get it in your eyes as that will burn. This is my favorite brand, available from my affiliate: apple cider vinegar.
Use a humidifier. This will help knock any pollen down that has found its way into your home. A humid environment is also more comfortable for the eyes rather than a dry one. This is my choice which is available from my affiliate partner – Humidifier.
Follow the 20/20/20 Rule: For every 20 minutes of screentime, people should look away from the screen and look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds, which will allow the eyes to relax.
Use artificial tears or over the counter eye drops, to flush any irritants out.
Support your immune system with Master Tonic – take it daily.
Stay hydrated – this also helps your immune system and is good for general health.
Essential oils can also be used – try Homemade Vapor Rub especially if you have chest congestion.
EYE ALLERGIES OR NOT?
Here are some interesting things to note when dealing with eye allergies and determining whether or not it is actually an allergy or something that should be treated medically.
Contact lens wearers should wait at least 15 minutes after using any allergy eye drops before putting in their contact lenses.
While allergy eye drops can offer immediate relief it is temporary. And, when used as a long-term method of relief, they can weaken blood vessels in your eyes and make your eyes more red.
It is very important to note, that eye pain is NOT a symptom of eye allergies. Nor are blurred or double vision and/or decreased vision. If you have any of these symptoms, please see your doctor.

Grind a handful of fresh basil leaves in a mortar and pestle. To the freshly ground basil leaves, add a pinch of black salt, a pinch of black pepper and three to four tablespoons of plain yoghurt.
Mix the ingredients well. Have the basil leaves and yoghurt blend a couple of times a day (at least three to four times) to overcome food poisoning.
Purple basil tea is also an excellent option
Garlic:
Garlic is an indispensable flavoring agent in cooking. But for over five thousand years, this humble herb has been used as a potent ingredient, in numerous traditional medicines to heal a variety of illnesses. Medical research has revealed the fact that the diallyl sulphide present in garlic, is one hundred time more effective than conventional antibiotics when it comes to curing food poisoning. The antiviral, antibacterial and anti fungal properties of garlic ,can annihilate the microbes which are responsible for causing food poisoning.
Grind one to two whole garlic cloves in a stone mortar and pestle. Dilute the garlic paste in a glass of warm water. Drink this concoction to get relief from the symptoms associated with food poisoning.

Kennel Cough Treatment — 4 Home Remedies for Kennel Cough
The post Kennel Cough Treatment — 4 Home Remedies for Kennel Cough by Julia Szabo appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren’t considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Dogster.com.
Are there any home remedies for kennel cough? Actually, kennel cough is not that different from any cough you’d get yourself as part of the ordeal we call the common cold — and it so happens that the home remedies for kennel cough listed below work beautifully on humans, too. Of course, contact your vet before you try any of these home remedies for kennel cough and call him immediately if your dog’s kennel cough persists or worsens.
1. Probiotics
Probiotics are among the home remedies for kennel cough. Photography by WebSubstance/Thinkstock.
Besides being excellent for oral and digestive health, probiotics make this list of home remedies for kennel cough since these beneficial bacteria do wonders to support the immune system. This is critical when treating kennel cough, which could easily progress to life-threatening pneumonia if left untreated. Be sure to give your dog a probiotic supplement made for dogs, such as Pet Dophilus by Jarrow.
And if your vet has prescribed a course of antibiotics for your dog (which is a common veterinary procedure in treating kennel cough), be sure to wait at least two hours after administering the antibiotic before giving the probiotic, or the two will cancel each other out and healing won’t happen.
2. Honey
The antibacterial property of this product of busy bees’ labors is truly astonishing, which is why honey lands itself on the list of home remedies for kennel cough. I give sick dogs one tablespoon twice daily until their coughs are cured; it also works to alleviate the nasal discharge that accompanies kennel cough.
For maximum benefit, be sure to select a homegrown honey that’s not produced in China, ideally a raw honey such as my favorite brand, Really Raw Honey, which comes topped with a “cap” of pollen, propolis and honeycomb. Dogs love this chewy mixture — mine go nuts for it.
There are some dos and don’ts to giving your dog honey, though. See them all here >>
3. Coconut oil
Dogster has extolled the virtues of coconut oil for dogs before, and its amazing antiviral property is especially helpful as one of the home remedies for kennel cough, which is caused by the Bordetella virus. Give two teaspoons daily until the cough is cured.
Pour it over Spot’s food bowl or just let her lick it right off the spoon — being congested will suppress her appetite, but a whiff of this oil’s rich, fragrant aroma will get her mouth watering again.
4. Cinnamon
Cinnamon for dogs is another great dietary supplement. This essential spice-cabinet staple is safe to sprinkle liberally over your dog’s food bowl any time of year, but it’s especially good as one of the home remedies for kennel cough. Like coconut oil, cinnamon is also antiviral, so go ahead and shake half a teaspoon of it over Spot’s food. Look for Ceylon Cinnamon, which is especially fragrant.

The Coronavirus and Dogs: What You Need to Know
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Coronavirus-COVID-19-SARS-cov-2-a-threat-to-pet-dog-canines.jpg
Like many of you, my family and I are concerned about the coronavirus.
We want to do our part in reducing the speed and spread of the infection.
We have opted to practice social distancing and remain home as much as possible.
I have followed COVID-19 with all of you and have taken the proper precautionary steps in ensuring our family is set for the next couple of weeks.
Though we have not hoarded items, we have picked up food and medicine so we can avoid going out unnecessarily.
Amongst the many necessities for the humans in the house, I have also ensured our cat and dogs will be equally comfortable while we wait this out.
As I have watched the progression of COVID-19, I have paid particular attention to any news impacting our furry friends.
Following the Virus
Since I have multiple seniors in our fur family, I have had concerns for their safety in the event COVID-19 was transferable to them.
Because many dog lovers are likely to be in the same boat, I thought it would be best to share some of the information I have gathered, as well as some best practices to aid in dealing with the current situation as it pertains to our dogs.
Also, as we all may be feeling overwhelmed, it is quite possible to overlook our dog’s needs during this time.
Many of us are concerned about the lack of necessities, such as TP and hand sanitizer, that it is easy to forget to grab an extra bag of dog food or order their prescriptions early.
However, I am guessing that if you are reading this, you are looking after the needs of your pup.
A friendly reminder to friends and family will likely go a long way in ensuring their four-legged loved ones are being seen after as well.
Can Coronavirus Spread to Our Dogs?
It appears so, though it also seems to be rare.
The particular pup who got infected is a Pomeranian
In early March, a single case of COVID-19 was found in a dog in Hong Kong[1].
As the University of Hong Kong, City University, and the World Organisation for Animal Health continued to investigate the case, it is believed the Pomeranian contracted a “low level” infection from its human who was confirmed to have COVID-19.
During their testing, they have also established that the transmission of COVID-19 is only contagious from humans to animals but not the other way around.
The World Health Organization also declared the spread of the COVID-19 is strictly due to humans and has nothing to do with animals.
Additionally, they state a similar situation occurred during the SARS outbreak.
Pets were susceptible to a low-level infection from their humans but did not become ill or transmit the virus to humans.
What Should You Do If You Have Tested Positive for the Coronavirus and Have a Pet in the Home
Though COVID-19 is not contagious from dogs to humans, the CDC has released a statement on this subject[2].
Those who test positive and are receiving in-home care should contact their state public health veterinarian.
The attached link is a list of all of the different offices, broken down by state.
Because health professionals are still learning more about COVID-19, they are doing all they can to ensure proper precautionary steps be taken.
What to Stock up On
Don’t hoard dog food, but keep a couple extra bags around in case a delivery is delayed
There is not a need to go overboard on dog food since most of us have the luxury of receiving home deliveries from various online stores such as Amazon and Chewy.
So, maybe now you are wondering, why you would stock up?
The answer is: Because as COVID-19 continues to spread, it will impact delivery times.
Those working for the different companies that pack, ship, drive, and deliver your goods are all likely to be impaired by the coronavirus.
And maybe even worse than some of us since they don’t have the option to work from home.
So, you know the 2-3 day delivery we have all come to love?
It is more than likely those delivery times will become longer as things progress, if they haven’t already.
And that’s why we can no longer rely on last-minute shopping, and ensuring you have enough essentials on hand is vital.
This might be the perfect time to try out a mail order dog food service.
Raw Paws is giving a 10% discount off your entire order for a limited time (we’ve reviewed their bully sticks previously). Just use the code RAWTAKE10 at checkout.
Here’s a List to Consider
Prescription Medications
Preventative Medicine (Such as heartworm, tapeworm, and flea and tick treatments)
Food
Treats (Playing the training game will help relieve boredom for both you and your pup)
Poop Bags (For when you go walking)
Coconut Oil (For minor first aid)
If you are sick and need medications from your vet, let them know.
Many will deliver to your home.
My vet office offers delivery as a regular service and is especially promoting it now to lessen the foot traffic in their clinic.
Is it Safe to Go to Dog Parks?
Dog parks can be a great place to socialize and exercise your dog.
It’s hard to self-isolate at a dog park
However, when practicing social distancing, it can make going to dog parks challenging since a lot of dog parents enjoy chatting while watching their dogs play together.
A better alternative to dog parks would be to go walking with your pup.
We live in the suburbs, and when we walk our dogs, we usually only see one or two people.
Even during regular times, we are never within six feet of others, so it is relatively safe.
Is it Safe to Take my Dog for a Walk?
Yes. If you are healthy, it is safe to go walking with your dog outside[3].
It is much safer than bringing your pup to indoor facilities such as local breweries, stores, and malls.
Though, when taking your dog out walking, it is best to go alone.
Also, find areas to walk that is less congested, maybe around the neighborhood instead of a city park.
Additionally, there are many benefits to bringing your dog out for a walk:
Excellent stress reliever for both you and your dog – Dogs are sensitive to changes in routines and are quite in tune with our emotions, so if we are feeling stressed, our dogs know it
Exercise helps boost both your and your dog’s immune system
A tired dog is a happy and well-behaved dog – The last thing you need is a bored dog who has decided to use their excess energy to get into mischief
If you are sick, you and your dog will need to find alternative ways to burn off their excess energy.
Indoor Activities for Your Dog
If you are sick or not comfortable getting out walking with your dog, there are some fun indoor games to keep your dog active and entertained.
Hide and Seek
Younger dogs usually love this game.
You hide then call your dog’s name when they find you get excited and praise them.
Most dogs can keep this game going much longer than you!
Training
Even for those with the most obedient dogs, brushing up on some old tricks or learning some new ones is a great way to engage your dog’s mind.
Most dogs can do 5-10 minutes per session, and you will be surprised how content they are afterward.
We try and do two sessions a day.
Puzzle Games
There are several great dog puzzles on the market.
Some of my favorites are:
StarMark Treat Dispensing Bob-A-Lot
I like this toy since it comes in two sizes, plus you can adjust the difficulty.
Additionally, it is the right size for kibble, so you can always feed them part of their meal this way.
Note this toy can be loud if you have hard floors.

Kyjen Squirrel House
My dogs love these.
They come in a variety of options, not just squirrels.
I put treats inside then place the squeaky toys back in. The dogs love this game.

Tarvos Food Dispensing Puzzle
This is for the very smart food-motivated dogs.
You put food in the barrel on top, and your dog needs to spin it to get the food to drop out into the puzzle bowl below.
It is essentially a two-step puzzle.
However, if your dog isn’t food motivated, like Ginger and Cal, this won’t work too well.

StarMark Everlasting Treat Balls
I love these treat balls for my dogs.
They come in several sizes, shapes, levels of difficulty, and you can purchase dental chew refills, or you can fill it with treats.
But what I really like about these is that they are durable!

Final Thoughts
We are experiencing a very challenging time, but if we take the proper precautions, hopefully, this will all blow over soon.
In the meantime enjoy some good quality time with your pup.
I hope you and your dogs all stay safe and healthy.

Kennel Cough Treatment — 4 Home Remedies for Kennel Cough
