Cigar of the Day: Wasabi

I bought these last summer, I think. Because they were weird. I had never really tried a Candela and so I went looking for one and of course I picked the weirdest one I could find, and it was Wasabi by Espinoza Cigar.

This is a cigar that comes in a Bento Box. It is like a little sushi lunch. That was part of why I got it, it was very cute the way it was presented, and it came with ten of these little robustos. I think they're about four and a half-five inches by 54 ring gauge. And the experience is quite unique, I must say.

There is this intensely vegetal aroma that comes off of it as soon as you light it. It's almost like some kind of harsh green hippie shake they would make you at a fancy gym with wheatgrass and some cleansing herbs that smell like lawn clippings.

Kind of hits you in the face. I mean there is definitely that note of Wasabi. It is what it says on the label. It has this incomparable spicy twang and it just blows it at you the whole time. Does not let up, really does not degrade. It definitely gets more peppery and almost a little more conventionally spicy as you get through it--because it is definitely an unusual palette when you first get started and it remains unusual.

You kind of either get used to it or you don't. I can imagine many people would just not like this. They will just find it not palatable. Over time I have kind of gone back and forth on it.; I love it because it's so weird and interesting but is it good enough I would ever buy another box?

I don't know. It's another one of those ones where now that I'm getting down to the last one or two, I had said to myself 'Well, these are interesting but I don't think I'd ever buy these again', but now I'm like well, 'Am I gonna smoke the last one and never have one of these again, maybe?

Maybe I'll get another box.

Another thing to note about it. I would say if not Wasabi, the thing reeks of horseradish, like biting right into a raw Radish. if that sounds refreshing, you'd like to have a nice crunchy bite of a radish, you might like this.

Personally, I love radishes. I think they're a great palette cleanser. And so I do find this palatable--to an extent--although it certainly would never be a daily for me. It's a novelty for sure.
