A similar map of the city of Paris, Jean's Plan routier de la ville et faubourgs de Paris divisé en douze mairies (Paris, 1809) with a note stating that it was recovered from Napoleon's desk at Malmaison by a Prussian volunteer, was offered for sale by Karl Hiersemann in the sale Napoléon I. et son temps; catalogue... composant principalement la collection H. We can prove this pretty easily. The commonly attributed "fathers of modern rocketry" were Robert Goddard, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Hermann Oberth, Robert Esnault-Pelterie, and Fritz Von Opal. These are just the guys we know of, who all had wildly different life circumstances, and all lived roughly in the same time period. Oberth died in 1989! These are the guys who managed to succeed in SPITE of their horrid conditions, the world wars, and disease. It's not numbers that make the geniuses, turns out it's just humans being geniuses when given resources.

And the New York Times called Goddard a lunatic, only retracting their statements on the eve of the Apollo 11 moon flight that landed Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon.

Fashion Friday

We’re having another French Fashion Friday this week with Galerie des modes et costumes franc̜ais by Roger-Armand Weigert. Published in 1956 by Editions Rombald in Paris, this book depicts various color illustrations of fashionable outfits worn in France between 1778 and 1787.

Each plate is a recreation of plates first commissioned in 1778 by the Parisian merchants Esnault & Rapilly. The first edition of this book was published in 1912 after historian Paul Cornu tracked down as many of the original plates as he could. Many of these original plates were destroyed during the French Revolution, which makes the 1912 edition of this book very valuable.

The plates shown here are designs by Pierre-Thomas Leclère and François-Louis-Joseph Watteau.
