EXCLUSIVE: Daveed Diggs (Nickel Boys), Mason Gooding (Scream), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Johnny Knoxville (Jackass), and stand-up comedian and actress Margaret Cho (All That We Love) will round out the cast of I Want Your Sex, Gregg Araki’s Black Bear thriller starring Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman and Charli XCX, which has wrapped production in Los Angeles. Details as to the roles to be played by the quintet are under wraps. A provocative film blithely exploring desire, domination, and fantasy, I Want Your Sex asks, how far is too far? When fresh-faced Elliot (Hoffman) lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse. American Fiction
Director Cord Jefferson Stars Jeffrey Wright, Sterling K Brown, Leslie Uggams, Tracee Ellis Ross USA 2023 Language English 1hr 57mins Colour
Affectionate portrait of a bourgeois family? Gleeful satire of people desperate to endorse diversity? How about both at once, successfully?
There’s a mixed blessing for the smart film with an attention-grabbing pitch. It simplifies selling the movie, both to distributors and the audience: ‘It’s the one in which…’ ‘Oh, yeah, I’ve heard about that one…’ But it can reduce the movie to something it isn’t really – in this case, you might be surprised to find that American Fiction spends more time on two brothers and a sister dealing with an aged parent than satirising white people’s stupid ideas of what authentic black stories are. I’d say that this movie is closer to The Savages, an excellent but under-seen film with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney as middle-aged siblings trying to cope with their difficult father than, say, Spike Lee’s raging satire Bamboozled.
Yet the catchy ‘about’ sticks, and I’m not in a position to criticise that. Watching the film, I was wondering if the family stuff had been added by writer-director Cord Jefferson because I didn’t remember it from Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, from which American Fiction is adapted. But no, the blurb on the back of the book describes it ‘as a profoundly moving story of family turmoil’ – so it’s clearly there, but my mind had only held on to pointedly satirical part of the plot.
Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison (played in the movie by Jeffrey Wright) is a curmudgeonly academic and writer whose attitude towards his students is becoming unacceptable to the university in California where he works (for those who like to check on fiction’s relationship to life, Everett teaches at USC.) Meanwhile, his agent (John Ortiz) is struggling to find a publisher for Monk’s latest highbrow novel. And over in Boston, his widowed mother (Leslie Uggams) is acting erratically, and his sister and brother are both feeling the financial and other impacts of divorce.
American Fiction is, then, effectively two films in one – a comedy-drama about a troubled (but not unloving) upper-middle-class family and a satire about a snobbish novelist who writes a spoof tale from the hood that (of course) is taken for the real thing. That’s an incredibly tricky mix to get right and at least a few people have been wrong-footed by the movie – ‘what’s all this family-reckoning-with-trauma stuff? Where’s the skewering of the white literary scene I was promised?’
I mean, that’s certainly there, it’s just sharing story space with eg, a tour of a care home the mother might move to. But that’s not just OK, it’s a positive, because the family stuff is great, particularly Sterling K Brown as Monk’s brother Clifford, voraciously making up for lost time after coming out in his forties.
Which is to say, the family scenes are not just ‘funny too’, the biggest laughs we had watching the film came from the interaction between the Clifford and Monk and Monk and Lisa (Tracee Ellis Ross). The writing here is so sharp, so precise, so spot-on. Yes, there are also a few moments of emotional realisation, but as with The Holdovers, I’m working on being less prickly about this kind of stuff – it’s good to feel, too.
This is Cord Jefferson’s debut as a director, but it doesn’t feel like a first film at all. It’s very assured, walks that tonal tightrope perfectly, marshals the cast well. Maybe that Jefferson doesn’t feel like a first-timer is not surprising seeing as he’s not young (he’s 42) and has a ton of experience writing for TV. But he’s not even got any screenplay credits for a movie. So this is extremely impressive.
Along with Wright, Brown and Ross, there’s good work from Erika Alexander* as the Ellisons’ attractive neighbour plus Adam Brody as a slimy movie director – with this and Fleishman Is In Trouble, he’s finding a groove as a glib sleazeball.
I was expecting to quite like American Fiction – as it turned out, I loved it. *I spent too much time watching the movie trying to figure out what I recognised her from – which was playing Rza's mom in Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

Dados do Filme:
Data de produção: 1992
Direção: Martin Brest
Roteiro: Bo Goldman
Elenco: Al Pacino, Chris O'Donnell, James Rebhorn, Gabrielle Anwar, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gene Canfield, Richard Venture, Bradley Whitford, June Squibb, Frances Conroy, Rochelle Oliver, Margaret Eginton, Tom Riis Farrell, Nicholas Sadler, Todd Louiso, Matt Smith, Ron Eldard, Margaret Eginton, Sally Murphy, Michael Santoro, Julian e Max Stein, Alyson e Erika Feldman e Leonard Gaines.
Bom dia!

currently watching Mushishi! Finally watching a Helena-recommended anime, and I'm loving it so far, it's been a slow, soft, and wonderful thing. More thoughts and pretty screenshots to follow.
Other media I'm currently consuming:
reading Michael Pante's A Capital City at the Margin
re-reading Tokyo Ghoul
was listening to some episodes of Literary Friction (the one with Brian Dillon on essays) and Verso pod (the one on ecofeminism and policing, etc.)
last movies I saw were Oppenheimer and Aftersun, I have to watch Nawapol's 36 before the month ends
still lots of Kpop shit: Aespa vlogs, Twice fancams, old Twice reaction videos, I really like Taehyung's last two songs and MVs, lots of Chordio remixes on repeat, I was revisiting Jack In The Box last week, found the amazing YouTube short of Chae and Jihyo doing the What is Love chorus but married ver. from 2021 (deeply moved by it)
on music, I finally listened to the entire shut the fuck up talking to me, the new George Clanton *chef's kiss*, I was trying to get into the music Karl/Frank/Anton talk about just to keep up so like hatchie, yeule, erika de casier, kelala, etc.
on Youtube, aside from Kpop, lots of James Hoffman, I caught up with the new Philosophy Tube video (the one with LegalEagle), Tekken 8 matches (lots of Knee, CBM, JDCR, etc.)
On Twitch, Dacktem and lmyourfather mostly, but I don't keep up much with Dacktem as often because he streams late (and been doing lots of chill runs)
On games, have an ongoing sword-summoner hardcore run and was playing a bit of Tekken 7 lately

Thanks, @flickeringflame216 !
3 Ships: gah. Hmmm. Eh. The 3 ships currently revolving around in my mind I can’t say, because there are preschool toys here because the characters only exist in my head (and the head of my friend). So. Huh. Basically most canon ships, especially Healthy Married Couples (because there needs to be more of those) but for like, current rabid fangirl ships… I guess currently they are
Peter Parker/MJ (Tom Holland and Zendaya’s portrayal) or Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy for the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man
Elizebeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy (I always call them Lizzie and Mr. Darcy in my head 🤣)
Donut Lord/Pretzel Lady 😂 Maddie and Tom are Relationship Goals, I love them so much
1st Ever Ship: heh, probably the couples from Barbie Princess and the Pauper- ESPECIALLY 💗Anneliese/Julian💗 but Erika/Dominic too. My first rabid fangirl shipping was definitely Obi-Wan/Satine from the Star Wars the Clone Wars 2008 show. My heart! 💔😭
Last Song: the pic below plus the Bad Michael Jackson cd my brothers had on. Plus Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkle.
.as I am typing this, either my Mom or brother has put on the Whitney Houston Greatest Hits cd 😂
Last Movie: hmmm I think it was The Santa Clause movie but I might be getting it mixed up with the Santa Clauses show my family binged together. Either that or Home Alone, I can’t remember the exact timeline of events, this holiday season was a bit crazy lol Currently Reading: Recently I read the original Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman (English translation) and it. is. a. TRIP let me tell you. I got lots of ironic enjoyment out of it and found it both highly amusing and more than slightly disturbing but in an entertaining way. The author wrote it with no small amount of satire and doesn’t take it too seriously - and neither should you. It’s a very interesting and unique writing style and I love it. The only other book I can think to compare it to, writing style-wise, is The Princess Bride (book) by William Goldman. I just started reading Ain’t Misbehavin’ by Jennifer Lamont Leo. I got it for Christmas ;-) Oh and Genesis for the Bible
Currently Watching: haha… a mix of stuff. Hermitcraft - Grian and Scar regularly, with many other Hermits pitched in that vary week to week. Plus Mumbo’s not-hermitcraft videos, lol Empires S2 - Jimmy’s episodes and a few of False’s. Sermons - found on youtube/rumble/other by churches I like to keep up with. As far as actual shows go, I have a longer list of Want-to-Watch than Actually-Watching lol. A lot of the shows on my Want-to-Watch have already ended. Bluey and Sonic Prime are the only shows currently airing new episodes (a show that hasn’t ended but is on hiatus that I watch is The Mandalorian).
Currently Consuming: Tea as well! Though my default tea is iced sweet tea (black tea we keep in the fridge. It’s like, 90% of my fluid intake lol). Of course make it with only a half cup of sugar per gallon of tea, because I don’t like it super sweet. I do love a wide variety of teas though…

Tagged by @o-lei-o-lai-o-lord--thanks Lee! Starting a new post because the old one was quite lengthy.
3 ships: Hmm, I'm not much of a shipper. BUT Faramir and Eowyn make me long for romance like not much else can. I ship them :). Meg and Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time are sweet. And...oh goshawk. Maybe Anne and Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables. I liked how they're still very in love in the later books despite lots of sorrow and Life Things Happening.
1st ever ship: . Probably Laura and Manzo from the Little House books?
Last song: Currently listening to an FFH album so it's Open Up the Sky (but my favorite in that album is One of These Days).
Last movie: Little Women (1994). Watched it last week with my sisters!
Currently reading: Just finished listening to A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle and started Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. The Space Trilogy was a gift last birthday and it's been sitting on my shelf for almost a year, so I'm very excited to begin. So far it's fun, and reminding me of just How Good a writer Lewis actually is.
Currently watching: No shows, but if I were YouTubing it would be Smarter Every Day videos.
Currently consuming: Tea! Decaf ceylon, very strong--not my usual choice of tea, but it came as a sample with other tea I ordered for Christmas presents and it is Quite Lovely.
Currently craving: sushi! I want to make it again sometime soon.

November Wrap Up
I just came back from my Thanksgiving festivities and realized it’s now December! I definitely wasn’t prepared for how quickly this month went by. The academic year is coming to a close and it is kicking my ass. We only have one week of classes left, and I’m passing in my last paper on the 13th. I’ll be happy for it to be over, but right now I feel like there isn’t enough time.
Books Read - Goal: 5 Read: 5
This month actually went well for reading. I mean, one was a picture book, but it still counts! Only one of the books I read was for school; it’s always nice to read some things for pleasure! My favorite was We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which was a reread. My favorite new book was The Invasion of the Tearling, which has joined The Queen of the Tearling on my favorite books of the year list. I found White Stag a little disappointing. I had high hopes for it, and it just didn’t reach them.
The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – 5 stars
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson – 5 stars
The Lives of Animals by J. M. Coetzee – 4 stars
The Twelve Dancing Princesses by Mary Hoffman and Miss Clara – 5 stars
White Stag by Kara Barbieri – 3 stars
On the Blog:
I continue to procrastinate my work with lists and book recommendations haha. But hey, it means there’s lots of stuff to put in this section!

Es gab Traurigkeit in seinen Augen.
(= Erika, I am sorry, but…) - Nein, komm’, bitte.
« What happened? - I was on a mission for Miss Norling in Germany and I found this boy on the road. He doesn’t speak. But I easily identified him as a demon. I don’t think he has a family and he is scared of humans. - I’ll call Viola, she might be still available to have a look at him… You can go upstairs to change your clothes. - Thank you Erika. » (= Come here, darling, you are safe with us.)
« Are you hurt, young man? Did you lose your parents? »
« So ? Demanda Erika, inquiète. - The child looks like he was beaten. He shows all the symptoms of a post traumatic shock. It might be the reason of his silence. I need to do proper exams later to confirm it is not another condition but it is unlikely. - Did you succeed to get any information from him ? - Yes. He said his mother got killed and that he doesn’t know his father. He got transferred to a tiny village’s monastery. I guess that’s where he got hit, those people are not known to be tender with children and I guess he wasn’t the kind to obey easily, because of his nature… - Does he have a name ? Demanda la directrice de l’orphelinat. - I didn’t find any clue on that, avoua John. - We might get him to write it down. If not, I guess we will have to give him a new one. I would start to think of one. - Poor boy, souffla sa soeur. Is it okay if John brings him to you tomorrow morning for the full check up? - Sure, bring him whenever you can. »
« What happened to you? - Someone I loved was in danger, débuta la succube en signant aussi. So I protected him. Sometimes, you have to pay a price to keep the one you love close to you. And you, what happened to you? - They said my mother was a witch. So they put her on fire and said they will save me. »
« They said that if I was listening to them, I would go to Heaven, where my mother isn’t a witch, where I still speak with my voice and where all the dead people live and the suffering disappears. »
« What is the name your mother gave you? demanda-t-elle. »
« Wolfgang ».
« That is a pretty name, répondit-elle, toujours en langage des signes. Can I call you « Wolf? » - Yes. Are you a mommy? - Yes, I am. I have two children, they are around your age. Their names are Bartosz and Irena. »

Dados do Filme:
Data de produção: 1992
Direção: Martin Brest
Roteiro: Bo Goldman
Elenco: Al Pacino, Chris O'Donnell, James Rebhorn, Gabrielle Anwar, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gene Canfield, Richard Venture, Bradley Whitford, June Squibb, Frances Conroy, Rochelle Oliver, Margaret Eginton, Tom Riis Farrell, Nicholas Sadler, Todd Louiso, Matt Smith, Ron Eldard, Margaret Eginton, Sally Murphy, Michael Santoro, Julian e Max Stein, Alyson e Erika Feldman e Leonard Gaines.
Bom dia!
