What's the secret to Sidney Crosby's success?
Always eat a strawberry PB&J on game day… and have unwavering dedication, unparalleled work ethic, and exceptional talent.
With Sidney Crosby appearing in his 1,200th NHL contest on Saturday in San Jose, I wanted to ask how his game-day routine has evolved in the years since that first one to help keep him playing at such an elite level.
Because as Mike Sullivan said, that’s not an easy thing to do – and it's a testament to Crosby’s drive, his will to win, his desire to be the best, and his willingness to put the time in and make the sacrifices so that he can continue to sustain that type of play.
At first, Crosby laughed good-naturedly – because we all know how superstitious and routine-based the captain is – and half-joked that there might not be much there. Most of it has stayed the same, particularly his on-ice warmup routine heading into puck drop. "Whether it’s preparing for a game or just a typical game day, (my routines) just allow me to feel good about going out there and doing what I need to do," he said.
But there has been a tweak here and there to the captain’s preparations now that he’s 36, particularly when it comes to what he does in the mornings. Unless the Penguins have the day off before a game, the morning skate is always optional – and in recent years, Crosby has chosen to stay off the ice.
“You look to conserve that energy a little bit more,” he said. “As much as I like getting on the ice in the morning, it’s good if you can just take that opportunity to do other things and still get a little bit of sweat – get ready for the night, but still conserve some energy at the same time. It's always a balancing act.”
Instead of skating, Crosby will take his stick and gloves and find a quiet area of the rink to do some solo stickhandling, which helps him loosen up a bit. He’ll also take part in the first soccer game of the day with Bryan Rust, Jake Guentzel, Erik Karlsson, Marcus Pettersson, and Rickard Rakell. Sometimes, Noel Acciari will join them, depending on if they do 3-on-3 or 2-on-2.
“We’re just kicking it around, but it can get pretty intense,” Crosby said before adding with a grin, “Sometimes, I wonder if I expend more energy in soccer than I would in morning skate. It just depends on the day, maybe.”
After grabbing lunch to go, when he gets home in the afternoons, Crosby’s nap has gotten shorter as he’s gotten older. “I used to sleep like, two and a half hours when I was younger. But a little harder to do that now,” he smiled. But Crosby still isn’t a big coffee drinker, since natural adrenaline gets the job done when it comes to waking up. “I feel like I get pretty amped up, so I don't need that. I’ve had some caffeine before, and I don’t think it’s good for me,” Crosby laughed.
When it comes to the food Crosby fuels himself with, on a game day the players have the same menu available to them both at home and on the road for their breakfast, lunch, and pregame meal/snack, so he sticks to his routine for those … down to the strawberry PB&J that HBO filmed him making during their 24/7 Penguins/Capitals Road to the Winter Classic series.
But Crosby doesn’t eat as much steak the night before games compared to his early years in the league, especially on the road. “That changed a little bit. Other than that, as long as it's somewhat healthy, I just try to make sure I get a good meal,” Crosby said.
There’s obviously a lot more that goes on behind the scenes, both inside and outside of a game day, that Crosby does to set himself up for success.
“All the subtle things he does – for me, that's the most impressive aspect of his overall body of work. A lot of it goes unseen,” Sulivan said. “That's why I've always said on so many occasions that it's not by accident this guy's as good as he is. Yeah, he's talented, he's gifted, and all of those things, but he maximizes every opportunity that he has to be at his best. I think that commitment, in my experience of being around the game, has been unmatched by any other player I've seen.”
And that’s because Crosby’s passion for the sport is something else that’s remained the same.
“I love it just as much as I did Game 1,” he said. “It’s a lot of hockey, and just grateful I’ve been able to play this long.”

**Using @leafsbabe optional tag** - HANNA. This list literally needs a ‘keep reading’ tag because of how many I’d want 😂
Rules:
Tag whoever you want… or don’t tag anybody
You can keep it just to the NHL or add other hockey leagues or sports
If you want add which jersey you want (home/away/alternate/from a former team/etc…)

I shall remember this moment: the silence, the twilight, the bowl of strawberries, the bowl of milk. Your faces in the evening light. Mikael asleep, Jof with his lyre. I shall try to remember our talk. I shall carry this memory carefully in my hands as if it were a bowl brimful of fresh milk. It will be a sign to me, and a great sufficiency.
Born Carl Adolf von Sydow, Swedish actor Max von Sydow passed away yesterday at his home in southern France. With a career spanning eight decades, the towering and lanky von Sydow distinguished himself in Hollywood, usually seen playing villains through the 1970s and ‘80s. But he was perhaps most widely acclaimed for his work in Swedish films with directors Ingmar Bergman and Jan Troell – the former, shortly before his death in 2007, described the actor thusly: “Max, you have been the first and the best Stradivarius that I have ever had in my hands.” The role that catapulted von Sydow to international fame was as Antonius Block, a returning Crusader who plays chess with Death (often parodied and referenced), in Bergman’s The Seventh Seal. In recent years, von Sydow described himself as an actor without a home nation, in due part due to his globetrotting film career and his sons attending American universities.
An actor of incredible gravitas and often embodying existential angst and resolve simultaneously, von Sydow fulfilled a lifelong passion that began when he saw a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a schoolboy in his hometown of Lund. Younger viewers and gamers may know him best as Three-eyed Raven from Game of Thrones and the voice actor of Esbern in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, respectively. In life, one of the greatest screen actors of the last century touched audiences in countless ways that few non-Americans and non-British actors could, no matter the project.
Nine of the films Max von Sydow appeared in are shown above, and are listed below (left-right, descending):
The Virgin Spring (1960, Sweden) – directed by Ingmar Bergman; also starring Birgitta Valberg, Gunnel Lindblom, and Birgitta Pettersson
The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) – directed by George Stevens; also starring Dorothy McGuire, Charlton Heston, José Ferrer, and Telly Savalas
Hour of the Wolf (1968, Sweden) – directed by Ingmar Bergman; also starring Liv Ullmann, Gertrud Fridh, Georg Rydeberg, Erland Josephson, and Ingrid Thulin
The Emigrants (1971, Sweden) – directed by Jan Troell; also starring Liv Ullmann, Eddie Axberg, and Monica Zetterlund
The Exorcist (1973) – directed by William Friedkin; also starring Ellen Burstyn, Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn, Jack MacGowran, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair
Pelle the Conqueror (1987, Denmark/Sweden) – directed by Bille August; also starring Pelle Hvenegaard, Erik Paaske, and Bjørn Granath
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007, France) – directed by Julian Schnabel; also starring Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, and Anne Consigny
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – directed by J.J. Abrams; also starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac
The Seventh Seal (1957, Sweden) – directed by Ingmar Bergman; also starring Gunnar Björnstrand, Bengt Ekerot, Nils Poppe, Bibi Andersson, Inga Landgré, and Åke Fridell

I've been a fan of the Swedish magazine OEI for the past many years, so it's a special pleasure to find myself included in an issue. Each issue is a humongous treasure torve of visual and text based work bursting with everything from unfamiliar contemporary artist to rare historical materials that are difficult to find. An often used series of double and triple volumes that take up several meters of shelving in my home. And now I'm so happy that, with the help of mathias Kokholm, I have managed to sneak a few pages into "OEI #94-95: geografer" based on the djurs archipelago project. Nästa nummer av OEI, #94-95, är ett 464-sidigt nummer om geografier som utkommer i början av mars. Det omfattar arbeten av och om Gunnar Olsson, Élisée Reclus, Pjotr Kropotkin, Doreen Massey, David Harvey, Christina Kullberg, Minna Henriksson, Erik Bryngelsson, Bureau d´Études, Raymond Williams, Carla Zaccagnini & Santiago Costantino, Trevor Paglen, Peder Alexis Olsson,Hérodote, Antipode, Eva Arnqvist, Aeron Bergman & Alejandra Salinas, Lytle Shaw, Jasna Jaksić, Bogdanka Poznanović, Radmila Iva Janković, Ivan Kožarić, Jonas (J) Magnusson, Nicolas Pesquès, Johannes Fridholm, Strabon, Johan Redin, Ptolemaios, Gustav Sjöberg, Edmund Husserl, Michael Marder, Georges Bataille, Katja Aglert, Filip Lindberg, Raketa, Minus Miele, Augustin Berque, Christian Abrahamsson, Alexander von Humboldt, Franz Boas, Runo Lagomarsino, Alfred Wegener, Jonathan Brott, Klaus Dodds, Louis Marin, Edwin Abbott Abbott, Anna Enstrm, Immanuel Kant, Axel Andersson, Mary Hunter Austin, Johanna Adolfsson, Mattias Legnér, FRAUD (Audrey Samson & Francisco Gallardo), Aihwa Ong, Emmeli Person, Bronwyn Bailey-Charteris, Pontus Pettersson, Mattias Jacobsson, Michel Chaillou, Cecilia Grönberg, Lasse Krog Møller, Kristoffer Ørum, Erika Arzt & Juan Linares, Martin Grennberger, Bo Anders Persson, Buckminster Fuller, Glenn Gould, Indigenous Peoples Atlas Of Canada #oeimagazine #djursarchipelago #geography #mapping (at Djursland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZfYNIiMZpo/?utm_medium=tumblr

So I was a writing a reblog of this but it got deleted and it 2.30 am and I’m not going in more detail so here’s some simple thoughts.
Bitty: caulfield. Jeff Skinner (mostly play wise) Marner’s public persona. Alex DeBrincat is the only other one I can think that’s that short but they very much don’t look similar. Jesper Bratt??
Jack: Crosby. Actually you know what? I can’t think of anyone else.
Kent: brock boeser. Elias Pettersson. (McDavid for his career). Jack Eichel, just in vibes. Little bit of Landeskog (maybe teravainen??) play wise maybe Sergei Fedorov.
Ransom: subban (who just won the NHL award for community work so go him!) Kadri (?). Seth Jones (?, maybe)
Holster: mikko rantanen. McAvoy (?) he plays D for Boston. Erik Johnson (!!). That’s it’s I remember Erik Johnson existed and he’s perfect for this (looks and career wise). I also wanted to say the Aho that plays D for the Isles is blonde.
Chowder: Jason Robertson (plays forward for the stars and is from California). He gives Farabee and Mercer vibes (both are white though).
Nursey: actually Nursey gives Kadri vibes. (Also Kreider but he’s white, and zibanejad (who’s of Iran descent).
Dex: honestly I’m just trying to think of red heads. The flyers had a couple like giroux and couturier, compher I think is a redhead (?). But a cool defenceman who looks nothing like him but maybe play wise is Zach Werenski or maybe or Morgan Reilly (Reilly might have red hair actually).
Tatar: well, Malkin. Nikita kucherov for play wise (?) or Kaprizov (???)
Whiskey: (who I’ve completely forgot about what he looks like) but gives off Zegras vibes.
I really wanted to include more devils in this but apparently that roster is terrible to make fantasy casting with. (/j)
Key:
? - maybe
?? - if I’ve got the right person this probably works
??? - I’m most likely completely wrong
!! - I’m a genius and this is the greatest thought I’ve thought
fantasy casting OMGCP, using only hockey players (NHL & NWHL) part 2
Ollie- they play the same position, I think they look vaguely similar, and mostly, he is such a frat-boy looking human, you can't say that Mitch Marner doesn't look like he'd fit right in at Das Haus.
Wicks - Ollie's other half! He also plays wing. Another "he could pass as just Some Frat Boy" pick... meet Mikko Rantanen
Connor Whisk- I think I'm funny and that's the whole justification I have for picking Nathan MacKinnon to play Whiskey (yes I'm echoing the mackinnon/Crosby narrative with my casting SHHHHHH)
River Bullard - a THIRD smile-based pick... Andrei Svetchnikov (with a wig)
Lukas Landmann - they're both Young, I think they're both wingers (?) aND they're both blonde!! A win all the way around! Meet Kaapo Kakko!
Alexei "Tater" Mashkov - I'm not kidding when I say this is 100% based on their noses and camera/media personalities.... Evgeni Malkin!
Georgia "George" Martin - Sarah Nurse, who played the same position George did! Yes this is 99% of the reason I chose her. Also she does kind of look like George which is super cool
Kent Parson- okay yeah they do actually look kind of similar (so long as he doesn't have his beard), Gabriel Landeskog and Parse are both blonde wingers!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE HAVE.....
Bad Bob Zimmermann- not only am I connecting my fantasy casting narratives YET AGAIN, I am also legitimately convinced they look alike. Also, unlike the man I cast for his son, Mario Lemieux's first language is actually French!
That concludes part two, but if you want, for some reason, to see me cast more people, drop character names into my DMs or asks and More Shall Occur!!
#omgcp#check please#kent parson#jack zimmermann#was this an excuse to unload my random hockey knowledge? yes#sorry op.

Lining Up: Vancouver, Chicago, and More – October 9
Stop what you’re doing right now. Stop Scrolling. Stop sipping your coffee. Go follow me on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza for the latest line changes and injury updates. Don’t you want to be the first to know when WhatsHisName McNobody gets promoted to the top line? Don’t you want to find a replacement for Band-Aid Boy the second it’s announced he’s going to miss the next month with an injury? Follow me now, thank me later.
In this week’s installment, we take a look at a few lines that have been particularly successful in this very young season. Using Dobber’s Line Production Tool, I compiled a list of the highest scoring line for each team at even strength. You’ll notice Arizona and Tampa Bay are missing because they haven’t yet scored a goal at strength. Also, keep in mind certain teams have played more games than others. Here’s the list…

Alex DeBrincat – Jonathan Toews – Dominik Kahun
It’s early in the season, so we don’t quite have a large enough sample size to start dissecting advanced statistics. However, I will let you know that Chicago’s top line has been outshooting their opponents, sporting a CF% of 54.76. While this trio has generated the most points at even strength so far, it’s not like they’re dominating their opposition. They’ve created just two more scoring chances than they have allowed (22 to 20), and have actually allowed more high-danger scoring chances than they’ve produced (9 to 7).
Jonathan Toews has been on fire to start the season. With six points in his first three games, Toews was recognized as the NHL’s second star of the week. Coming off a career-worst 52-point season, Toews worked extremely hard this offseason to become a faster skater. He’s obviously not going to hit the 164 points he’s currently on pace for, but I’m beginning to believe a 65-point season is in the cards for Captain Serious.
In an impressive rookie season, Alex DeBrincat tallied 52 points, 28 of which were goals. Keep in mind that DeBrincat put up those impressive numbers while everything was going wrong for Chicago last season. Now that Toews appears to be on track for a bounce-back season, I’m expecting a 30-goal/60-point season from DeBrincat, with potential for more. Although the season is extremely young, DeBrincat is putting himself in a position to succeed by continuously getting the puck on net (nine shots in three games). With a year of experience under his belt, the 20-year-old Blackhawks’ forward is soaring to new heights.
The talent of Toews and DeBrincat has been well documented, so we’re probably more inclined to trust them in fantasy leagues than a newcomer like Dominik Kahun. The 23-year-old is listed as a smart forward with tremendous skating abilities. In all honesty, I don’t see any legitimate candidates outside of Chicago’s top-six that can take Kahun’s spot on the first line. While Kahun may not be someone you keep on your team for the entire season, I think he can be extremely valuable for short stretches. In other words, he’s someone you can add when Chicago has a favourable schedule in the upcoming week.
youtube
Loui Eriksson – Elias Pettersson – Nikolay Goldobin
It goes against every fiber of my being to speak about Loui Eriksson as an asset in fantasy hockey (because of injuries more than anything else), but he has been producing alongside some young talent. While the points have been there, this trio probably isn’t going to maintain the 65.38 CF% they’re currently sporting. This line has seen about a third of the ice-time that the aforementioned Toews-line saw, so the sample size is a lot smaller. It’s encouraging to see that their production has come while out chancing the opposition, but I don’t think they have the wheels to keep it up all season.
Elias Pettersson is an excellent hockey player who is probably valuable in most fantasy leagues. He tallied five points in his first two NHL games, showing insane amounts of talent in the process. With that being said, some of us might need to temper our expectations a little considering both of his games were played against the Calgary Flames. So, while the fifth overall pick from the 2017 draft is certainly a frontrunner for the Calder, we might want to set the bar at 60 points instead of the 205 he’s currently on pace for.
Nikolay Goldobin was selected 27th overall in the 2014 draft, and has tallied 22 points in 63 games between the Sharks and Canucks. Up until this point, he hasn’t really done anything impressive at the NHL-level, but he also hasn’t played with a player like Elias Pettersson before. In the past, he was criticized for his play away from the puck. But on a young Canucks team, Goldobin’s defensive weaknesses can be set aside temporarily as his offensive skills shine beside Pettersson. Goldobin might be someone you add and drop during the season, but the ten minutes of ice-time he’s seeing certainly isn’t enough for you to own him long-term. A 30 to 40-point season seems realistic, with potential for more as he continues to develop in the coming years.
Loui Eriksson is not the player he once was, and a large part of that is due to the injuries he’s battled in the last couple of seasons. The 33-year-old isn’t seeing enough ice-time (9:42) to hold any sort of value over the course of the season, but he may have flashes of production if he continues to play with Pettersson. It’s concerning that through two games in which he has three points, he still hasn’t registered a shot. Again, it’s a small sample size, but he’s probably not going to drive very much offense by himself. While playing with Petterrson, he has limited value. Away from Pettersson, his value falls off a cliff.
