Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell in In Bruges (Martin McDonagh, 2008) Cast: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Clémence Poésy, Jordan Prentice, Eric Godon, Zeljko Ivanek, Jérémie Renier, Thekla Reuten. Screenplay: Martin McDonagh. Cinematography: Eigil Bryld. Music: Carter Burwell. Martin McDonagh's In Bruges is a bloody little gem about two hitmen, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), who have been sent by their boss, Harry (Ralph Fiennes), to the picturesque Belgian city of Bruges to await further instructions. Brooding, depressed Ray thinks Bruges is a "shithole," whereas Ken is rather taken with the medieval architecture, the cobblestone streets, and the canals. Ray's deep funk stems from guilt: While carrying out a hit Harry ordered -- we never find out why -- on a priest (Ciarán Hinds in an unbilled cameo), Ray accidentally killed a small boy who was standing behind the priest, waiting his turn in the confessional. Ken drags Ray around the city, trying to raise his spirits with sightseeing, but the only thing that works is Ray's discovery of a crew making a film on location and particularly of the pretty Chloe (Clémence Poésy), a production assistant who is actually a drug dealer. Ray is also enchanted that one of the actors is what he calls "a midget" named Jimmy (Jordan Prentice), which allows him to investigate his theory that little people are particularly inclined to be suicidal. Wait, I'm getting lost in the filigree that In Bruges is full of. To return to the main plot, it turns out that the real reason Harry has sent Ray and Ken to Bruges is so Ray can have a good time before Ken kills him. But to understand that, you have to go back into the filigree again: Harry has his own personal gangster code, one article of which is that you must never kill a child, so Ray has to pay the price, but since one of Harry's few happy memories is of the time he spent at the age of 7 in Bruges, he naturally assumes that the trip will be so delightful for Ray that he can die happy. Writer-director McDonagh's imaginative intricacies of characterization and motive might have resulted in only a somewhat twee black comedy if it weren't for the brilliance of his performers, especially Farrell in a part that turned him from a second-string leading man to a specialist in eccentric characters in oddball independent films like Yorgos Lanthimos's The Lobster (2015). In Bruges is crowded with unexpectedly colorful secondary characters, including Zeljko Ivanek as a Canadian whom Ray insults in a restaurant by mistaking him for an American; Jérémie Renier as Chloe's former boyfriend, who attacks Ray but winds up getting shot in the face with his own gun, loaded with blanks; and Thekla Reuten as Marie, the proprietor of the boutique hotel where Ray and Ken are staying, who meticulously takes down a message to them from Harry, who modifies every word in the message with "fucking." It's true that the film ends in a bloodbath, but somehow the tone McDonagh has established, with the help of a fine score by Carter Burwell, allows it to transcend its violent excesses. Farrell and Gleeson play off each other so well that McDonagh inevitably had to reunite them someday, as he did in The Banshees of Inisherin (2022).

In Bruges

In Bruges    [trailer]
Guilt-stricken after a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.
Seeing The Guard recently, it made me want to watch again this film directed by the other McDonagh brother, and also co-starring Brendan Gleeson.
Equally full of dark humour, but with a stronger serious component about guilt. The two would make for an excellent double bill.
I know it's silly, but I enjoy listening to Ralph Fiennes swearing.
Side note, it's obviously difficult to measure, but I would really like to know how much Bruges' popularity profited from the movie. I mean, I want to go there every time I see the film.

“Giving It Back To God”-- Models of Faith in the Movie “Pilgrimage -- Pt. III: The Rich Ruler
Tumblr media
Jump to Pt. II  Jump to Pt. IV
This piece will likely be a bit shorter than the others, as this character has a smaller role in the film and is out of the movie by about halfway through. Still, I wanted to briefly touch on Baron De Merville, the aging Norman lord, as his particular relationship to faith is sadly all too common. Baron de Merville first appears when the monks are led to the Norman camp. The Baron appears in many ways to be more pious than his son, Raymond (see later in this series). He expresses a genuine desire to see and venerate the relic, and he commissions the monks to offer Mass to his troops before he leads them into battle. Unlike Geraldus, he is less interested in appearing righteous so much as in using the language of faith to give sanction to the power and violence he already commits. Faith becomes a means to the end of legitimizing political power, rather than a means to self-righteousness (as in Geraldus’ case) or an end in itself (Diarmuid and Ciaran).
Geraldus makes it clear that the Baron sees the monks as “sin-eaters,” in a sense, doing the spiritual work to clear the ledger of sin that the Baron and his men accrue in doing violence. In a way, his faith is more orthopraxic than orthodoxic, but not in a way that matters. Faith to the Baron is a series of rituals that legitimize and sanctify his everyday actions, whether those actions be for good or for ill. When they are viewing the relic, the Baron rebukes his son for speaking in a flippant way about the power of the relic, but it seems clear that this is more for the sake of form, as in all his actions, than out of any concern for humility.
The Baron echoes the rich young ruler that Jesus speaks to in the Gospel According to St. Luke (Luke 18:18-30, and in the other Synoptics). When this wealthy man of authority asks Christ what he must do to inherit eternal life, Christ asks him about the Torah and its ethical injunctions. When the ruler insists he has done these things, Christ gives him a stronger commandment: not merely to perform some religious ritual, but to actively divest from the wealth and authority he has been given. Jesus makes it clear that the way of discipleship involves sacrifice and the giving up of temporal power for the sake of love, humility and faithfulness to God. Baron de Merville, like the rich young ruler, is interested in discipleship only to the extent that it benefits him. Were he forced to consider what truly following the Prince of Peace would require, he would likely choose to retain his power at the cost of violence and subjugation rather than relinquish it to lose power but gain his soul.
All judgment aside, this mentality exists to varying degrees across human society. It seems most entrenched among the rich and powerful, and this makes sense. Those who have the most to lose in terms of worldly agency/puissance from following Jesus are often the most reluctant, while the lowly have little to lose and everything to gain from a God who imbues them with dignity, synergistic authority, community and grace. “Blessed are the poor,” not only because God’s love is especially for the poor and the marginalized (though this is certainly true), but because the poor are not as easily caught up in the desire for self-interest that the rich fall prey to. As mentioned though, this mentality can affect anyone. Whenever we seek our own well-being at the cost of another, whenever we decide to do the easy thing rather than the right thing, we risk losing touch with God and with one another. The Baron serves as a warning to those in power and authority, but also to everyone, to keep one’s sight on what is truly important. To remember that no earthly power is worth the cost of human dignity, life, or divine communion.

Movie Review: In Bruges (2008)
Movie Review: In Bruges (2008)
After seeing the Cohen-eque trailer for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, an IMDb search was needed to find out who was directing. Martin McDonagh’s new film comes out in November, but looking down his short list of film Seven Psychopaths was the most recent, which is great. In Bruges was next on the list and has positive reviews so a viewing was mandatory. It is currently available on…

🎃🖤 October Horror Appreciation🖤🎃
Tumblr media
Yummy from 2019 is a zombie horror comedy from Belgium. It was directed by Lars Damoiseaux as well as co-written by Damoiseaux and Eveline Hagenbeek. Yummy is the first Belgian zombie movie and in my opinion is an entertaining and fun take on the modern zombie genre. It's in Dutch and well as English and stars Maaike Neuville, Bart Hollanders, Benjamin Ramon, Clara Cleymans, and Eric Godon.
Tumblr media
Maaike Neuville plays Allison, a young Belgian woman traveling to a Eastern European country to receive a breast reduction from a plastic surgery facility along with her boyfriend Michael played by Burt Hollanders. They are also travelling there with Allison's mum who wants a ton of things done including face lifts and tummy tucks.
Tumblr media
The facility is sketchy and unnerving and through a series of events it's found out a virus is travelling through to patients as well as to the doctors and nurses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yummy is more of a gross out gore comedy than full on horror with a kinda fucked up conclusion. Like in Troma films the gore and grossness never stops. I had an enjoyable time watching it though and the practical effects blended with cgi was quite well done I felt. If love zombie films and gore humour I highly recommend.
