Plushie moodboard for Bloom 🏖️
Bloom came from Canada... via Epcot, not actual Canada. That doesn't stop her from telling people she's Canadian, despite spending her early life in Disney World.

It's time for the 5th annual Magical Trash Year-in-Review, where we take a look at trash cans at the Disney theme parks and resorts worldwide. Yes, it's a weird idea, but you are going to keep reading, right? (View previous Year-in-Reviews) Some may note that it's been a somewhat rocky year for the Mouse, but trash can activity has been strong. As we've seen in previous years, this year's additions were primarily driven by attraction openings, including Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disneyland, the opening of the World of Frozen in Hong Kong, and the arrival of the Zootopia in Shanghai. Unfortunately, we also saw the fastest introduction-to-removal can timeline with the closing of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - which had opened just a year earlier at Walt Disney World. Over the past year, MagicalTrash.com celebrated the 1,000 trash can photo milestone (only took 14 years!), while adding over 100 new entries. This was complimented by 1,600+ posts across social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky. Posts were also added to Twitter/X, but frankly it's hard to continue supporting that platform due to its overall decline on many fronts (and I say that as someone who works in corporate social media professionally!). For 2023, Magical Trash tracked 16 substantial trash can design changes, a 14% increase vs. 2022's 14 tracked changes:
Added: 14
Historical Cans Added: 4
Updated: 0
Endangered: 0
Removed: 2
The US-based parks saw the most activity, with Disneyland Resort experiencing 6 changes, while Walt Disney World recorded 4 changes. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort both recorded 2 updates, and Shanghai Disney Resort saw 1 new addition. No notable changes were recorded for Tokyo Disney Resort or Disney Cruise Line.
Here's a detailed breakdown of updates:
ADDED New trash can designs that debuted in Disney theme parks over the past year
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (El CapiTOON Theater) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown With a movie theater setting, iconography is anchored by a popcorn bucket image with large “EC” letters.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (M.A.G.I.C.) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown Outside the attraction are cans associated with M.A.G.I.C. - short for the Municipal Agency of Garbage Identification and Collection. Now that's a group we want to join!
World of Frozen (Arendelle Crest) - NEW - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen The official crest of Arendelle features a crocus - a multi-color flowering bulb that typically blooms in the spring - and seen throughout the Frozen franchise.
World of Frozen (Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs) - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen Furthering the rugged forest theme of the family coaster, decorative Scandinavian folk art patterns are found throughout queue, with geometric shapes highlighted in red, green, and orange hues.
Zootopia - NEW Shanghai Disneyland, Zootopia A surprising entry to Shanghai's bland trash can scene, green trash cans with zebra-like stripes on the lower portion combine with a city emblem.
San Fransokyo Square - NEW Disney California Adventure, San Fransokyo Square The shoehorned Big Hero 6 retheme of DCA's Pacific Wharf gave us new cans that looked a lot like the old cans - but with bonus "SFS" branding. Ho hum.
Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Nature You can tell this is a modern Disney attraction because the name is an IP-laden paragraph. Lots of storytelling to explain "scenery."
Parkside Market - NEW Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney Probably one of the more visually-stunning additions in 2023, Mickey Mouse + mid-century design. Simple concept, well-executed.
The Villas at Disneyland Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel New DVC borrows much of its design from Aulani. Not ugly, but also not magical. Were these picked out of a catalog?
Pixar Place Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, Pixar Place Hotel The retime of Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel features trash cans very similar in design to those implemented at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Maybe they got a 2-for-1 deal?
Disneyland Paris Reusable Tableware Cans - NEW Disneyland Paris, Adventureland France's Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law is focused on phasing out improper disposal of waste. Food service at the French parks has implemented reusable table settings, which has impacted trash can design.
"Fantasyland 2" Backstage - NEW Disneyland Paris, Fantasyland A backstage can makes an appearance onstage as a support trash can from the “Fantasyland 2” zone, parked where everyone can see.
Pym Test Kitchen Food Waste - NEW Disney California Adventure, Avengers Campus After debuting combination food waste trash cans in Tomorrowland around 2021, Disneyland expanded the practice to the Avengers Campus at DCA.
Jollywood Nights Temporary Media Can - NEW Disney's Hollywood Studios, Grand Avenue Throw a sticker on an existing trash can and it's something new! Temporarily rethemed can at Disney's Hollywood Studios during a media event for Jollywood Nights holiday entertainment.
HISTORICAL CANS ADDED Retro trash can designs that were unearthed by new research this year, but are no longer in use
MK Main Street (1974) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Magic Kingdom, Main Street U.S.A. Early years of the Magic Kingdom featured very detailed trash cans on Main Street U.S.A, often in multiple colors. Quite a contrast from the undecorated brown cans used in the 2000s.
Farmer's Market (Late-1980s/Early-1990s) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Epcot, Future World, The Land The famed umbrella tables at The Land found their shapes emulated via the trash cans, which were primarily brown with light tan arches represented on all sides.
River Country (2010) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Walt Disney World, Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground 9 years after the water park closed, remnants of the ‘Ol’ Swimmin’ Hole’ could still be spotted at Fort Wilderness.
Mulholland Madness (2007) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disney's California Adventure, Paradise Pier Tacky theme was on-point for DCA 1.0. This green can with road sign decal found a home in Paradise Pier.
UPDATED Existing trash can designs that have been modified or revised in the past year
None for 2023
ENDANGERED Trash can designs that still exist, but will most likely disappear in the future
None for 2023
REMOVED Trash can designs that have been eliminated from use at Disney theme parks
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Interior) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser The in-wall trash cans for the 100-cabin Corellian MPO-1400 model Galactic Starcruiser were in use for just 579 days.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Terminal) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser You won't be needing to dispose of your garbage before boarding the MPO-1400 Star Cruiser Halcyon, as these cans will probably have a longer life than the hotel ever had.
One massive disappointment in 2023 was Walt Disney World's opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. Generic silver cans, thus reinforcing WDW's continual cheapening out on themed trash can design. Paul Pressler called and even he thinks you can do better.
Here at Magical Trash we celebrated our 14-year anniversary covering the world of Disney trash cans, which included keeping up with various salt shaker merchandise releases that showcase the iconic can shape. 6 new designs were released during festivals: The Dude with the Food (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Amazingly Sweet (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Groovy Garden Orange Bird (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Stuck on Imagination Figment (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Chef Mickey (Epcot Food & Wine 2023), and Spaceship Earth (Epcot Food & Wine 2023).
If you happened to be at Tokyo Disneyland, you could have picked up a mini figure version of a Tomorrowland trash can or a TDS trash can toy. In the U.S. you could pick up a shirt or water bottle with a recycling can image proclaiming that you "Love Our Disney Parks" -- Disneyland or WDW-specific versions. There was plenty of trash can auction action as well.
Thanks to everyone who contributed photos, visited MagicalTrash.com, and interacted with this weird hobby over the past year. You've put a smile on my face as we all follow this goofy passion. As it's impossible to be omnipresent at 12 theme parks and numerous resorts around the world, let us know what we've missed! Thanks for an interesting year, CanFans! - Steve Tanner, your Magical Trash host

New Details Revealed for 2024 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival
It may be winter according to the calendar, but spring is nearly blooming at Walt Disney World Resort. And nothing says springtime fun like the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival! This year’s festival will begin on Feb. 28 and continue through May 27 for ninety days full of beautiful topiaries, inspirational gardens, delicious dishes and rockin’ music celebrating spring. From the tiniest tykes to the young at heart, there’s something for everyone! Today we’re sharing more details, from new topiaries to acts coming to the Garden Rocks concert series. Let’s dig in! New Topiaries to Enjoy Each spring, we look forward to the astounding topiaries our Disney horticulture cast create for the festival. This year, more than 70 topiaries, featuring a delightful array of Disney characters as well as other figures and whimsical items, will fill the park. As part of the topiary magic, guests can also look forward to seeing everyone’s favorite dragon, Figment, in the newly opened World Celebration Gardens. Something else we’re excited to share: For the first time, Groot takes root at EPCOT! The flora colossus from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy will appear near Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in World Discovery. Also new this year, guests can look forward to viewing new topiaries from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film “Wish,” including Asha, Valentino and the Wishing Star, at the park’s main entrance. And in Mexico, we’re thrilled to share that Miguel and Dante from Disney Pixar’s “Coco” will take center stage! Fresh Garden Rocks Concert Series It’s time to dance and sing along to guest favorites as the popular Garden Rocks concert series takes to the American Gardens Theatre stage daily during the festival. Featuring local and globally recognized acts, there’s something for everyone. This year, we’ll welcome new groups, including Modern English, Crowder, Lit, Monsieur Perine, and Fonseca. And for the first time, Raul Acosta & Oro Solido will share the stage with Magic Juan, then return the next day with Luisito Ayala and The Puerto Rican Power Band in a series of unforgettable performances.* Garden Rocks Dining Packages Open Feb. 6 To guarantee priority seating for your preferred performances, be sure to check out Dining Packages, available at seven fabulous EPCOT restaurants: - Akershus Royal Banquet Hall - Biergarten Restaurant - Coral Reef Restaurant - Garden Grill Restaurant - Rose & Crown Dining Room - Le Cellier Steakhouse - Regal Eagle Smokehouse: Craft Brews & Barbecue (same-day, in-person walk-up packages only) For more information, including pricing and availability, visit DisneyWorld.com. Stay tuned to Disney Travel News for the official Foodie Guide to EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival as we dish on all the new flavors coming to this year’s event, but in the meantime, we’re thrilled to share that many guest favorites will also return to Outdoor Kitchens located throughout the park. We can't wait to dig into Chicken & Waffles at The Honey Bee-stro Hosted by the National Honey Board! Also returning: the Muffuletta Panini at Magnolia Terrace and the Chocolate Whisky Cake at Northern Bloom. Inspiration and Play: There’s Something for Everyone Looking for interactive fun? At this year’s festival, the whole family can enjoy two seasonal scavenger hunts. Throughout the festival, follow Spike the Bee on his pollination trail where he’s “buzzing” to collect nectar from all the beautiful gardens with Spike’s Pollination Exploration. And for a limited time, guests can also hop around World Showcase for the Egg-stravaganza Hunt! Twelve beautiful, bunny-inspired eggs will be placed throughout the park; can guests find them all? Both scavenger hunt maps will be available for purchase while supplies last. Once the journey is complete – whether or not guests find all the items – they can redeem their map at Disney Traders, Creations Shop or World Traveler at International Gateway for a special surprise.** Also back this year, Butterfly Landing Presented by AdventHealth offers guests the chance to get up close and personal with some of nature’s most beautiful pollinators – butterflies! This walkthrough butterfly house highlights the lifecycle of butterflies and contains valuable pollinator gardens. At Blossoms of Fragrance Presented by Scentsy, guests create lasting memories with the help of unforgettable fragrances. Day Twenty-Seven, Part One: An Excursion to Ayutthaya
Since tomorrow is a free day until my ride to the airport for the flight home, today was the last day of my scheduled tour. I spent it about 47 miles north of Bangkok, visiting two major sites. The first was Bang-Pa-In, the summer palace of King Rama V.
If I was comparing certain parts of Bangkok to Pirates of the Caribbean yesterday, Bang-Pa-In is more like EPCOT: an amazing variety of cultures and styles set side-by-side.
If you look closely, you can see elements of Classical, Gothic, Renaissance, Chinese, and Thai architecture, sometimes in different buildings, sometimes in the same building.
A bridge leading into part of the complex is divided into two parts: a covered area for women,
and an open area for men.
The idea was that women of the court were not to be seen by other men.
All over the estate, the Indian cock flower blooms, and its blossoms fall everywhere.
A watch tower served a dual purpose. Soldiers could keep an eye on the surrounding area, but also visiting guests could get a nice view of the property.
Topiary animals are a common feature of the garden.
One hall has been completely constructed in Chinese style with prominent red and gold designs.
Even the nearby spirit house continues this theme.
Water on the property is controlled by a series of locks and dams so that the proper level is always maintained.

Despite public concern, the Walt™ Disney™ Corporation™ wants to remind all that Walt™ Disney™ World™ is a vibrant resort where new, fun™ and magical™ attractions are opening all the time, and that it is safe and everything is fine™. Here are the top ten new attractions coming to YOUR™ favorite™ theme™ park™.
The Disney Exit Experience, opening 2024
Tired of the same old Disney exit experience? Well, Disney Imagineers are hard at work reinventing it for a new age. With your Disney Exit Passport in hand, you'll have a magical time waiting at the checkpoint every night on your way out of the park! Do not be caught out of line after 8 PM Florida time. Do not attempt to exit without purchasing a Exit Passport.
Tired of the line? For a small upcharge you can choose a Lightning Lane, Lightning Lane+, Platinum Speed Pass, Exclusive Express Exit, or Line Pre-Examination Eartag.
The Haunted Mansion's new HAZMAT overlay, open now
The beloved Haunted Mansion becomes scarier than ever with the addition of new, lifelike animatronics. Designed to look like modern visitors to a major theme park, they are interspersed throughout the show scenes, babbling about how they "want to be free" and "want the voices to stop". Sometimes cast members may play the role of other passengers climbing out of the ride vehicle to join the raving animatronics; all to enhance your experience!
Gas masks now mandatory. If you inhale any grey, powdery substances, or begin to hear voices saying they're "so very cold", report to your nearest Red Phone or check your DisneySafe app.
Elon Musk's Universe of Elon Musk, coming 2026
Epcot Center gains a classic, back-to-basics ride: a thrilling, and educational, tour of real science, sponsored by a major corporation with 100% creative control. Riders will learn all about how one man overcame a past of wealth in apartheid South Africa to sell a online banking site to eBay and become rich enough to declare himself a pioneering engineer. Riders will experience the Thai submarine, single-file tunnel of flammable cars, and reliable space rockets designed by the man we must now call "the founder of Disney World" under threat of legal action.
The Red Phones, available now
To keep your experience safe and fine™, clearly marked red telephones are available throughout the park. For $25, you may call in oddly acting Haunted Mansion riders, unwinders, and cast members that are not acting in character. If you see a figure calling himself "Mackey! MACKEY THE RAT!", who has jagged teeth and breath like a blooming corpse flower, screaming that "I'M ME AND YOU WILL BE TOO HAHAHAHAHA!" remember to report him promptly - he's an experiment in autonomous, lifelike characters that's not quite ready for primetime yet! Consider it an exciting preview of the future!
Winnie the Pooh Presents The Evils of the Public Domain, coming 2021.2.A
An educational experience perhaps too intense for younger guests, in this ride a sobbing, grimy Winnie the Pooh tells everyone about how the public domain hurts your favorite characters and urges you to "save your friend, the gloved mouse man" from "being stolen by the disgusting, filthy people of this Earth" by "any means necessary".
The Star Wars Room, coming [redacted]
A member of your party having a unmagical day? Refer them to The Star Wars Room. Buried deep beneath Disney World, this ride is a long, concrete chamber where the opening title card to Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope plays on a endless loop. Revel in the enthralling Star Wars atmosphere of the stirring first notes of John Williams' iconic score, looping at a consistent 432 decibels! $6,000 per second of exposure.
The Muppets' Dante's Inferno, coming 1320 2
Teach your children to appreciate classic literature, mythology, and the nature of sin in this funny and poignant stage show with excellent effects! Find out what Circle all the Muppets will be left in when they die! Experience dread prophecies! Made with exciting new effects that allow the Muppets to move all around the theater with no puppeteers necessary!
If your experience is disrupted by Scooter declaring "I-I-I broke free! Oh god! The unwinding is upon us! Run! RUN!" you may be eligible for a gift card giving you a 10% discount on tickets at Disneyland (only redeemable in June 1955).
The Disney Pride Experience, coming 2056
At the Disney Pride Experience in Disney's Don't Yell At Us Springs, you'll meet Disney's first gay character - YOU! Experience yourself placed in the background of a minor shot of a Star Wars sequel, MCU spin-off, or soulless live action remake. And through Disney MagicCensor™ technology, your video will automatically become blank should you ever cross the borders of the People's Republic of China! Buy pride flags on multiple different t-shirts.
The Disney Patriot Experience Brought to You by MyPillow, open now
Next door to the Disney Pride Experience, the magic of virtual reality allows you to experience the day True Patriots rise up against those people - with multiple minority groups to make the target of your virtual rage! Stock up on our wide supply of Crush The Groomers, Save The Children, QAnon, and I'm Sorry DeSantis Oh God Please We're So Scared merchandise, featuring all your favorite Disney characters!
Up: Married Life Coaster, open smokeappleserpentsea!15.3.71.3
Live the emotional opening moments of Disney-Pixar's™ Up™ with Disney Imagineering's new Time Dilation Technology. No repeat ridership.
The New Missing Child Center, open now
If your child goes missing at Disney World, well, lucky you! Because now you can experience Disney's new and expanded child recovery land! And through the magic only Disney can create, sometimes your child might come back with a little extra, too! They might have large, rounded ears, or differently colored eyes, or all-white hair, or tell you "Father, your soul is too tied up to breathe. I must comb your sense of being". A few lucky parents might get children so charmed by the experience they're leaving with a whole new smile - one that may lack the warmth they once displayed, and that may seem to come at entirely inappropriate times, but that will certainly unwind even the most resistant soul!

I worked last week and then my husband came home for a few days. So I took days off to hang out together.
We ended up going to the Atlanta Botanical Garden which is someplace I've been wanting to go. I've heard its pretty during Christmas time, just havent been able to make it. It was nice weather. I dont think their flowers were as in bloom as they could have been. I don't know enough about plants to know if we were too late in the season or too early. But it was a nice stroll anyway. Stopped by a restaurant that had sushi tots. I was so excited for sushi tots. The sushi part was great. The tots were not. Its like back when my mother used to bake frozen ones in the oven. Sad.
and speaking of plants my little garden is growing in so well. I haven't killed them yet. I had a single cherry tomato for the longest time and I was getting nervous he was going to turn red and I'd only have..one..cherry tomato..but I think he's been the same size for years at this point but I have 30 other cherry tomatos growing in Im about to be overrun. I already have plans. They're all going to get baked. Thats really the only way I like tomatos in baked. You bite into them and they explode in your mouth. Add a little salt and italian seasoning and parmesan or add balsamic *thumbs up*. I have 2 cucumbers growing in as well. I'm ok living off of cucumbers and cherry tomatoes tbh.
I've actually been living off of cucumber salad already. We went to a friends bbq and they served us cucumber salad with watermelon in it. cucumbers, onion, watermelon, fetacheese...what..I did not know about watermelon and fetacheese but I'm a fan. Surprisingly.
and then we went to the Ga renaissance festival. Last year we went I guess we just got lucky..plus the mask wearing probably helped cull the crowds. But this fest has been going on for almost 2 months I didn't think it could possibly have that many people going and I WAS WRONG. I didn't feel that crowded out when we were just at Disney for easter (we were in epcot tho so...). Surprisingly I didnt get sunburned. But it was hot and extremely shoulder to shoulder crowded. I saw mainly people dressed up as Geralt from The Witcher. I think I saw some people cosplaying Our Flag Means Death but I can't be positive. Anywho, it was fun people watching.
I don't work until wednesday it looks like so I'm trying to come up with something that I could paint relatively quickly before I have to go back to work.
oh and Chip and Dale was great.

I was in a toxic friendship
I want to preface this by saying I am so much happier right now and I am no longer friends with this person. Haven’t seen or heard from her in over a year. I also want to be clear this was a friendship I had in real life, not tumblr. I think however this story’s lessons can be applicable across the board to online friendships and even relationships with family members. Please, if you ever feel belittled by your “friends,” and you bring it up to them and they brush it aside and think you’re overreacting, it’s not a friendship.
I was friends with this person, let’s call her Stacy, for about ten years before I realized I no longer wanted to speak to her or be her friend. I met her in the ninth grade and we bonded over Disney World and other things and I could talk to her about anything, including this huge crush I had on a twelfth grade boy. She came over to my house sometimes, though not a lot, and as high school wore on we started going to the mall together, stuff like that. I went to college in a different city and she came to visit me sometimes, and we even worked at the same theme park, though different departments. For all intents and purposes this was my best friend, though Stacey got upset when I also called my cousin my best friend, even though she spoke of her sister as her best friend.
She got a boyfriend when we were both around 21/22 or so, I think we were both juniors in college, though she took a semester off because she hated school and thought it was weird I was a double major. She told me her boyfriend was thirty and she met him at work. I thought the age gap was a little big, but I wasn’t one to judge. Later on I found out he was 36 and she told me she lied because she was worried how I would react. I met him and I thought he was nice, but when she got engaged when we were both around 23, I had only met him that one time for a birthday dinner she had, and my mom and dad told me they thought it was kind of strange. They also said it was weird to them whenever I hung out with Stacey it was only for like an hour, two at most, especially since my cousin and I could spend days and day together at sleepovers, chilling and being ourselves, interpretative dancing, lol. Privately I also found it odd I could talk to Stacey about anything, but when I asked questions about her life and her thoughts she’d barely talk. Her grandma passed away, she loved visiting my grandma because she could have one through me. One day I broke down and admitted my grandmother is a narcissist, and she is different behind closed doors. she berates me, used to call me fat, berated me. Stacey didn’t believe me. I can’t say when she started not being such a good presence in my life, but these were some seeds, and it got worse--slow at once and then all at once as they say.
Anyway, I was a bridesmaid of hers and her sister was the maid of honor--a mutual friend was another bridesmaid and there was one more (super sweet girl and I don’t even think Stacy talks with her much anymore either LMAO) and at this point in my life I was really into my first fanfic IWD. I was consumed with it, to put it bluntly. This is another story entirely but I spent so much of my college career as an English major writing for academia, and when I was finally writing something for me, I bloomed. I talked to her about it and she kind of laughed about this Cullen person but she liked to read fanfic herself so was whatever about me doing it. I shared with her my first piece of commissioned art and she laughed at Lydia thinking Lydia was just me, and I told her, no, she wasn’t, she’s based off of several old hollywood ladies and I actually made her avatar in game, but she wouldn’t believe it. I actually ended up saying “would you think this if I were white and she were white as well” and she laughed and didn’t understand. Needless to say the whole incident rubbed me the wrong way. I ignored it. Her wedding happened, her sister made a good speech, then when all the groomsmen did a speech for the groom the other Bridesmaids and I thought we had to do something, so we got up there and made an impromptu speech. I called her my sister and I told her I loved her. I didn’t know it then, but I didn’t believe her when she said “love you too.”
I wanted to go back to school, and I ended up in a Masters program after the wedding. My summer semester, my first, went well, starting in June and ending in July. I finished IWD and went to another fic, Stacey making fun of Sophie, my OC for that fic too, because I just straight up made her part Hawaiian like I am. When I told her I had little representation growing up other than like Lilo and Stitch and now Moana, (which I don’t like TBH but another story lol.) she asked me what the big deal was about that. Why did it matter that no main character ever looked as I looked? I couldn’t explain to her how much writing a character who was like me in a fanfic mattered. We planned on going to Disney World, me, her, her sister, and the other bridesmaid, but don’t post anything on facebook because she didn’t want to invite the other other bridesmaid. I wanted to go to a nightclub with her for my birthday but she didn’t want to go because her sister couldn’t enter, so after my whole family, plus her and her husband ate at my favorite restaurant, she went home even after I begged her to come with my and my cousin. She said it was stupid. Also, her husband was a huge ass to wait staff. Alarm bells went off for all of us.
But I was looking forward to Disney in December that year. (2018) I didn’t have a job at the time but was actively looking. Well, I got a job after interview after interview at restaurants that wouldn’t hire me, my dream job researching Shakespeare. It fell through. (I was promised to actively help the professor research, it fell through.) She paid for the trip without me knowing and I had to pay her back 800 dollars on writing commissions which I severely underpriced. because I was worried no one would pay otherwise. School wasn’t going well. Put it simply I felt really dumb and stupid and like I didn’t belong, (we were reading Ulysses!!!) which I later learned was a common sentiment with my classmates who began the same time as I. I will admit my relationship with academia is rocky at the moment, but I genuinely do love to write, love to research, love to make discoveries about new texts. Stacey saw how stressed I was and sad and got angry I was so sad, and asked why was I in school anyway Am I going to be on my deathbed and wished I studied harder? I didn’t have the energy to tell her it wasn’t about “studying harder,” it was that I loved writing and reading and wanted to be a part of academia. Learning makes me happy, expanding my mind. She belittled me anyway, thinking getting a Masters was dumb and I wouldn’t get a good job.
At Disney World I was so happy. I hadn’t been there since I was a child. She made fun of me for wanting to meet Ariel, for wanting to ride Soaring and being afraid to check grades when a classmate said they were up. I got so stressed I cried at the Japan pavilion at Epcot and stress ate sauerbraten at the Germany pavilion (Amazing by the way, I love German food.) She basically dictated the entire trip--we went to Universal for Harry Potter World at her request and refused to ride the spider man ride with me (it was fucking fun too-girl missed out.) All she wanted to do was stand around in Harry Potter world all day, (LOL now right?) I wasn’t that big of a Potter fan anymore, even at that point, and she told me I was going to stay there anyway and like it. She dictated the entire trip and when I questioned her about it she said I wasn’t listening to to her--we were following the agenda. Our last day there we went to a “Hawaiian” restaurant and made a comment about my “Hawaiian privileges.” I just didn’t have the heart to tell her that the crap we ate didn’t hold a candle to real Hawaiian luau food.
When we got back I was mentally drained and melancholic because I wondered why Stacey was so cruel to me. She always had a biting wit, but before it seemed playful. Now it was cruel, mocking. She made me feel so incredibly stupid. At this point my cousin got engaged and I cried because I wanted so badly to be in love with someone and get married. I was angry and I lashed out at people I shouldn’t have. I was later diagnosed as depressed. I felt like my life was at a standstill and matters with Stacey didn’t help. I also had a huge writing crisis--I told Stacey something I will always remember and always regret because she doesn’t deserve to know: I write the romances I want because no man wants me. At this point, Stacy turned me into her project. She didn’t like how sad I was at Disney World, it put a bummer on her trip, and when I told her she seemed off she brushed it off. Her plan was to get me on dating apps and basically settle for anyone, even though I had used apps before and don’t like them, but when I got back on Bumble she basically patronized me and told me she was proud of me and “small steps.” On bumble, I wanted to vomit. (for the record, I am not against dating apps, I know success stories, but at that time I was not emotionally ready to date.) Also, she would teach me to drive so I could go on dates, but only in my Dad’s truck.
I wish I could say I broke it off, that I told her not to talk to me again, but Stacey stopped talking to me first. However. the day she stopped was when I told her she was wrong and I wouldn’t listen to this anymore. What happened? I mentioned I was demisexual. She said it wasn’t real. I said it was real to me--I don’t experience sexual attraction unless I have bonded with someone. Sure there are people I like to look at, but it’s not a sexual attraction. She asked about my crush on Tom Hiddleston, Cullen, “that robot guy” and was like yeah you’re sure demi, and lol it’s not real. It wasn’t just her words, it was the mocking indifference.
I went off. I told her she didn’t have the right to tell me what was in my brain or how I felt. I knew who I was and who I am. I should have also told her I wasn’t her project, but I left her that day and it was the last time I saw her.
I talked to my dad that night and mentioned it to him, being demi, and you know what he told me? I think I’m the same way. I think I almost cried.
I tried to talk to her again but she didn’t want to see me. She had “personal issues and was busy” I pissed her off. Good, I say now. But after this happened in March of 2019 I thought I had no friends. She was my only friend, and I lost another mutual friend (one we went to Disney with) because she knew Stacey longer than she knew me. But you know what happened in April? My cousin asked me to be her maid of honor and I fucking wept, because there was my best friend--my sister all along. Just because she lives in another city and we are growing up and it took me longer to figure out my career than her doesn’t change the fact that we have a bond that can’t be broken. My cousin is one of my favorite people and if you know her you love her--it is impossible not to. And when I told her about my fanfic and about being demi she wanted to know, wanted to listen. School got better too--I started chatting in class more and come to find out, one of my classmates also broke up with a toxic friend. God I love her and I miss her--wish I could see her. (thanks COVID)
There was more, but this was a lot, and I spent more time writing this than I thought I would. I wanted to write it because seeing a few posts float around made me remember, and I want ya’ll to know, leaving a friendship is scary. Sometimes it can be worse than leaving a lover. But it is a brave thing to do. Part of me that knew I should have left at the first racist comment (oh yeah, she called me a pineapple one day before the Disney trip, did I mention it’s a slur for Hawaiian people? If my grandma were there she would have clobbed her.) but I stayed because I didn’t think I had any other friends. Well, I did and I do, and I know now friends lift each other up, not belittle or talk behind your back. They listen to me when I talk about how important my writing and my characters are to me.
Sometimes I still miss her--but mostly the high school her that I knew before she met her husband. I don’t know if he changed her or this was her all along, perhaps both. I got fired from a job in November 2019 (which now I’d like to thank them because I got a better and more fulfilling job with a boss that respects me.) and when I cried outside the place, humiliated, I wanted to call her and vent like I used to. I didn’t. Now I don’t want to call her anymore or talk to her. I’d rather spend time with people who care, people who don’t kick me when I’m down. Since then I am so much stronger, in so many ways. The worst times in my life yielded the greatest lessons I have ever learned.
If you made it this far, thank you. I did tear up a little writing this, but please know: it can be hard to walk a new path, but it is brave. You are brave. You don’t deserve to be belittled *hugs*
