The big analysis of Joris Jurgen's horrible-no-good childhood.
TW: discussions of child neglect, and what might constitute as emotional abuse.
Firstly, to address something, I hadn't in the last liveblog: There are plenty of times in the show where one can see Joris saying things that he may not entirely mean...
But it is especially interesting to see him say something like this immediately after breaking down into tears about it just a scene prior.
Hm. Anyway. I'm sure this won't affect their relationship going forward.
I've discussed Kerubim's issues of self-worth, loneliness, and dishonesty, before on this blog, — but you will never believe it, Kerubim isn't the only one who suffers because of his issues.
It's nigh time we discuss seven-year-old Joris, and the terrible, no good, case of emotional repression and lying.
Let's set the stage first.
Joris grew up in a deeply isolated and neglectful, and at times dangerous, environment, in every single way. And the child neglect Kerubim engaged in lessened, but did not stop after Simone arrived.
He did not have any family members besides Kerubim, — for obvious reasons, both of their family members are either dead, or want nothing to do with them, — and he did not have any friends, besides Tatak. The reason he did not have friends is unknown, but there are several factors that may have contributed to that:
The sorry state of their house might have complicated his relationship with other kids and given him and Kerubim a poor reputation among neighbours;
The part of the city they live in might simply not have a lot of families, due to being a — being, perhaps, mostly populated by adventurers and other people in violent professions, as well as the shops that cater to them (which are, in turn, mostly ran by retired adventurers).
And then there's the third thing: Kerubim is his best friend.
Joris did not have a support system in the form of an extended family, — or at the very least, in the form of friends outside the household, — and It doesn't seem like the other adults Kerubim knows were at all involved in Joris's childhood. Besides that, Joris was seemingly homeschooled, — and, considering Kerubim's finances, and his referencing at least one school's existence, there were other options.
For the large part of Joris's life, they only had one another, and it almost seems like Kerubim, with his abandonment issues, and low self-esteem, acted in ways that isolated Joris further.
Due to Ecaflip's mistreatment of him as a child, and his loneliness due to the death of his family when he was a child, — what he wanted the most as a father was to be a best friend to Joris.
(And, much more selfishly, not that he would admit that, — he wanted someone to replace Lou/Indie/Atcham/Bashi/Everyone else who has left him.)
He could remember being a child, and he knew how he would have liked to be treated, — as a peer, obviously. It's important for peers to respect each other equally, and listen to each other's pain, right?
Except, in a way, Kerubim is perpetuating a cycle here.
And children are not peers, best friends, or caretakers. They depend on their parents for their survival.
And Joris knows what will happen to him, if Kerubim is gone. Kerubim himself was an orphan, and has shared more than enough stories about that.
Because of this, thoughts of Kerubim passing away are a usual worry for Joris, no doubt fueled by Kerubim's dramatics, and love for his attention — and it means he'll do everything to make sure Kerubim is happy and healthy.
Even if it means sacrificing his own comfort for his sake. Even if it means putting up with being treated badly.
Joris and Kerubim have what is known as an "enmeshed", or "codependent", parent-child relationship, the characteristics of which are, according to online resources:
Parents expecting children to be their best friends and always confiding in them.
Children receiving praise for maintaining the family’s status quo, and conflict-avoidant behaviours.
The lack of emotional and physical boundaries.
Role reversal, in the form of the child being expected to take care of the parent's mental health. (Despite lacking the maturity to)
Children prioritizing parents needs and feelings over their own.
Childhood overindulgence, in the form of the parent using the child for wish fulfilment.
Another interesting titbit that informs his character, is that, from a very young age, children learn how to respond to their feelings and express them, based on the way adults behave, by mirroring those behaviours, — and Kerubim is anything but honest about his feelings, more often than not, putting on a brave smile.
Joris values his stories more than anything, despite knowing that, often, they may be fake, at least in some parts. To him, words matter more than the truth of the matter, when push comes to shove between them. But also, he doesn't like outright lies, which are just as plentiful between them.
Despite how he may usually act, Joris isn't really the happiest about how their family is. He knows that Kerubim is dishonest and neurotic, and, in a way, it causes dissonance in his mind. He loves him more than anything, and to trust him, — but he knows that to trust Kerubim is to be disappointed.
When something bad happens? It's a guarantee, that instead of being comforted, it will be his job to pretend to be comforted, so that Kerubim doesn't completely fall apart. So that he can still be taken care of, — and every child wants to be taken care of.
Yet another thing he can't really trust Kerubim with.
Just like Kerubim, he is growing up to be a good liar. And someone very much afraid of being abandoned.
But everyone has their limit, fear of abandonment or not. No matter how much you repress these feelings, they'll come bubbling to the surface eventually.
...An interesting tidbit about children raised in enmeshed relationships, is that, at times, as adults, they find it difficult to trust others, open up to people, or have close friends in general. Due to guilt of those people on the outside not being their family, and due to associating close relationships with pain, responsibility, and giving up a part of themselves.
They grow up to be aloof, flighty, and cold.
Another interesting tidbit is that, sometimes, they find themselves unable to leave at all.

Watching skz talker is sometimes torture because you'll hear han jisung do the most beautiful rendition of a song in the name of vocal warm up and then be expected to move on like he didn't just change the trajectory of your life.
#listen is this dramatic? yes#but how would you feel if a motherfucker jokingly sang Fine by Taeyeon but switched the lyrics to be about his make up#& it ended up being pretty enough that I'm still thinking about it#knowing damn well he's not going to do a proper cover any time soon#han jisung#skz#han#stray kids#skz talker#ep48

Ep 48 Pt 1: Just Me Thinking too Much About the Shape of Obelisk's Ass
Got swamped by work stuff and sick stuff pushing my stupid fatigue to 11 but hell I need to write about Yugioooooh.
Last we left off, Isis and Shimon died in order to get Pharaoh back the puzzle so he could pull out the spicy god cards.
And I need to discuss butt plate.
(read more about Obelisk's ass under the cut)
I know that Obelisk probably never does a big sitty at any point of his day, but considering I have chronic fatigue now and I just big sitty all the time, I think about sitting a LOT. Like a LOT.
Anywhere this man sits down is destroyed. Like anywhere. He's got a gardening hoe for a rear end. This man could kill you with his butt in a way that's just way more devastating than his fists.
Why does this exist? Like have we EVER seen the back of a god card before? Like ever? It's fascinating, and parts of me wonder if whoever was doing this episode started sweating bullets when they realized "Does Obelisk have a butt? And how chiseled is the butt? I'm very concerned like, does he even wear pants? How cheeks are these cheeks?"
And like was the solution between if Obelisk would have a bubble butt or a flat butt to instead put a giant knife on his ass to cover it up? because I can respect it. It's a weird character design decision but so is this entire show.
And the character design is about to get a little weirder his episode because Yugioh reminded us that fusion exists.
Bakura is true to his word, and so we say "so long" to the theatrical pocket universe where these two yell asides at eachother across the DM table. We will go back to the isekai where Bakura will now become Zorc for the rest of the show.
Does the show give Zorc a British accent, do you ask?
No.
And I'm as confused and disappointed as you are. Alexander the Freakin Great had a British accent. But Obelisk? Absolutely not. Would not make sense. Who would do that?
Now in case you forgot, because I only do like one of these a month, Seto was left behind at the castle courtyard because Yami did not give him a ride to Kul Elna. You may be asking, isn't the...castle courtyard in the capital? Like right in front of us? Like why would Seto be in the desert?
I don't know.
Maybe that was not the capital where Sad Seto watched his not-wife die? Maybe that was somewhere else? Geography in Yugioh is such a mobius strip I've sort of gotten used to this.
Anyway, Seto is in the desert, and it may have been something we found out and I forgot because my fatigue is kicking my ass but like...I'll accept it because it's very funny to me that he's hiking around sand in that outfit, comes over a dune, and just sees those God card he REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted 4 seasons ago but lost to Yugi Muto just mocking him up there in the sky.
Also Seto believes in magic now. It was a very abrupt thing but it had to happen eventually. Better late than never, I guess.
And then the Egyptian Gods freakin biffed it.
Isis and Shimon would be shaking their heads about how they died for freakin nothing from their afterlife plane, if any of this were in fact actually happening and not a weird simulation in Yami Muto's mind that is in a puzzle wired to Yugi Muto's brain.
Speaking of which, back at Yami's tomb, Yugi is having a meltdown.
It's part of his creative process, having a meltdown. Yugi would have massive creative block without his routine. That's just world building.
Yami is also going through his spin cycle, now that the moon blocked out the sun and we don't have any way to fix that.
Except we actually do have away to fix that, we used it in Season 1 when we went up against Mako Tsunami (don't ask me how I remember that random fact but don't remember what I ate for breakfast) but the problem with the ancient Egyptian version of this card game is you can really only summon like 1-3 cards at a time. So, they're boned.
And now it's Seto's turn to fix Yami's problems, which like, wouldn't be the first time, wouldn't it?
Problem is, this Seto is just SO BAD at cards.
I really should've put the towel on this shot ps but like...I got tired. I got a bad fatigue week, so we're gonna go au naturale with this episode.
Now one of y'all did a fancy reblog and showed how Zorc looked in the Japanese version which can I say--is SPICY. Like the US version tried to connect the neck more with the neck of the dragon, so it's like a tummy dragon instead of peen but it uh...doesn't work from this angle, does it?
I'm just still reeling about how there is a dragon dick and it aired on kid's tv and they fully got away with it.
EGYPTIAN ROLAND SIGHTED.
We love Roland.
I'd recognize that bad stache anywhere. Just because you don't got glasses on doesn't mean we don't know you got a Roland doo under that headwrap.
Bless this man.
Also, Roland is shredded? I'm just gonna leave that there.
And that ends this segment. With the way we do image blocks...I uh will have to end it here. I can't have like more than 30 blocks total? And we're at 15 images? I don't know if it's adding text blocks to image blocks in that addition? I'm not sure how this new post system works so I'll just cut it here anywho.
Until then I'm going to go lay down prone on the ground like Yami muto in the image above. Kinda jealous of him rn not going to lie.
https://steve0discusses.tumblr.com/tagged/yugioh/chrono
(and for those who just got here, you can read these caps all in chronological order by using this link right here. Assuming it's the right link. With the new Tumblr post thingy, it has been randomly removing /chrono from the end of my link? Which sucks? anyway, hopefully it works.

Episode 48 - Role Plays (Part 1)
Joris is such a backstabber for forgetting all about Choupata in the span of two years.
Imagine being a Lady Gaga fan and switching to being a swiftie because you move from one city to another and can watch her concerts more often... 😭
The things he is about to do in this ep physically pain him, but to him, lying to Joris is better than disappointing him.
This has haunted me for a long time. Why exactly did he need to be at the Ecaflip temple?
Is he fulfilling his Dubiously Canon Lance Dur Comic cleaning duties or something??
I feel you, Luis. I don't like bodyswap/disguise plots either.
Presented to you without comment.
They are playing War/Battle, which is a card game typically played by two people, and often times, played by children.
Joris says "Bataille >:3" so cutely... And this implies that Kerubim plays cards with Joris.... I think I hauve covid.
He does act like he just came back from a day long Cleaning Duty that he promised to keep doing for the rest of his shitty life during the Lance Dur comic in exchange for Ecaflip saving him from Cire Momore.
Food moment: Joris has multicoloured, presumably fruit, cereal, while Kerubim has an unidentified fucking bowl of vague fish meat and Bones.
Kerubim's food tastes scare me.
This is a newspaper asset we've seen many times before.
Luis is confirmed to have running water, and not a litter box. I wonder if they have a shower or a bath? Not for Kerubim's usage, of course, but for Joris.
Man, I hope this won't lead to any trust issues on Joris's part in the future. Perhaps even anxiety or resentment. Haha.
I really wish there was more content with Joris and Crocosec. Croco is such a good uncle to him.
Joris and Crocosec: [Incoherent sobbing]
Kerubim: I WAS RIGHT AND YOU ALL WERE WRONG :)
...kill him, Simone. Please.
I'm glad he admits his fault, here.
...I really do like to think that this was him cleaning up after Ecaflip's shitty party, in return for Eca's saving him from Cire Momore in the Lance Dur comic.
That comic doesn't entirely jibe with me, but it's funny, and fits really well at times — especially here.
The gobball says "CH(unholy fusion between O and U)N". No, I don't know what this means either.
Aaand Crocosec is sad, despite being happy just seconds ago. Maybe he liked being a dad. Man.
Part 2 of this liveblog will be, just like with Episode 46 - The Hacienda's Fever, me addressing, like, a single line from the episode, and then going wild with a character analysis.

The Story of Minglan
Oh, no! Do hit him! Hit him some more!
No sympathy for rapists and human traffickers getting a piece of what they deserve, especially when they get them on something they are definitely guilty of.
Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time before Gu Tingye gets their rotten asses out of prison, so I appreciate at least the beating.
***
LMAO, it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of assholes 😂
Honestly, Tingye should just let them rot.
***
LMAO, since he is so precious, how is he going to run the Gu House, if your scheming comes to fruition, hmm?
He sounds too incompetent to live.
***
LMAO, at least Gu Tingyu is owning up to his jackassery.
He certainly is his father's son, waiting until he was on his deathbed to regret a lifetime of abusing his brother for no good reason.
Fuck this entire family. Gu Tingye should let the Emperor exile and execute them all (not that the Emperor would do it because he seems invested in preserving the honour of the entire Gu family for whatever reason).
***
LMAO, don't you mean you wanted to spend it yourselves? 🤣
The audacity of these thieving pieces of shit!
***
Oh, fuck you.
You haven't been a small child for a long time and instead of using your brain and thinking for yourself for one single second, you decided to ostracize, bully and abuse your younger brother FOR YEARS.
We saw the horrific scars on Tingye's body. You all saw this was happening to him and gloated about it. And even if Madam Bai had been responsible for the first Madam Qin's death (which you would know she was not if you had half a brain cell), the tiny child she left behind was innocent.
I hate all these people and feel like they all deserve to die unforgiven, in shame and ignominy.
***
The nerve of him, asking Gu Tingye to treat his wife and child better than he treated him.
He's just lucky Gu Tingye is a much better person than his sorry ass and would never take out grudges on innocent children.
***
LMAO, the absolute nerve.
Of course, adopt the illegitimate child of her own son!
Luckily, Gu Tingyu has finally pulled his head out from his ass and realised that even after all the shit he put Gu Tingye through, he will still treat his daughter better than Madam Qin.
***
Poor kid.
She seems smarter than her mother at the very least and maybe with Minglan's help, she can go on to have a not too terrible life.
***
Honestly, fuck Gu Tingyu.
He allowed himself to be manipulated into being a tool for evil people's ambition and greed and actively took part in bullying and abusing a child for other people's benefit. Even after he became the Marquis, he allowed his clan to descend further into corruption and degeneracy just so that he could continue to scapegoat his brother for no good reason. He was such a weak, petty man, and even when the single solitary lightbulb finally went off in his stupid head allowing him to see Madam Qin for the greedy, manipulative, vicious piece of shit that she is, he still continued to hang onto his single-minded jealousy and resentment. He was perfectly content to continue waging a cold war against Gu Tingye for years and years to come and only backtracked when he realised he was dying and would leave his very young child unprotected in this hellhole that he'd personally had a hand in creating for so many years and at the mercy of monsters he'd happily rolled about in the mud with if it meant victimising his younger brother who had loved and looked up to him.
Anyway, good riddance to bad rubbish. His daughter is better off with Gu Tingye and Minglan anyway and he certainly contributed to nothing good in his lifetime. He regretted nothing and only changed his tune because he knew that if he left his daughter at the mercy of Madam Qin, her life would be completely ruined. I hope he finds no peace in the afterlife, right along with his piece of shit abusive father.
***
OH FUCK YOUUUUUUUU 🤬🤬
I absolutely detest him.
