One thing that’s fun about learning a language - especially one as far from English in its roots as Mandarin - is seeing how humans have created the same metaphors over and over across space and time.
Like the word bitter. It’s a basic flavor category, it’s your tongue detecting alkaline foods. We have specific cells to detect it. It’s no surprise that many languages would have a word for that.
But there’s no reason a language has to also use that word metaphorically, to describe an emotional state that is unpleasant in a way that maybe vaguely resembles the way bitter foods can be unpleasant, or things that cause that emotion (a bitter defeat). It’s not shocking that multiple languages do, obviously - it makes sense to use something unpleasant as a metaphor for something else unpleasant - but it would be very easy for a language not to. Heck, maybe some languages use a smell word like pungent or acrid to describe that emotion!
And yet in Mandarin, 苦 (kǔ) means bitter as in flavor - and there it is again, being used metaphorically to mean pain, hardship, and suffering, or to be enduring those things (and can also be used for causing those things, just like in English!).
I just think it’s neat. The human tendency to land on the same linguistic metaphors across cultures is neat.
#also it’s easy to ignore#and assume that of course all languages use the same metaphors as your language#so I think it’s worth drawing attention to#mandarin#english#linguistics#language#chinese#chinese language#psychology

To other English people, stop saying "England has no culture", it is actively harming us. There is a reason the Tories defunded the arts and heritage sectors whilst scapegoating immigrants. The fear that immigrants will come and destroy Englishness is only working as the government is literally trying to actively wipe it out. If we a) recognise the things that are distinctly cultural (eg architecture styles) and b) actively participate in the traditions you're always told are silly (Morris and Molly dancing, scarecrow competitions and folk songs), it will actually make us better as a country and more difficult to divide via classism, racism and xenophobia
To be extra clear, these traditions are for everyone, queer people, imagrants and anyone of any faith (including Islam).
The deliberate eroding of our folklore/traditions by conservatives (both big and little c) is allowing for the insecurities weaponised by the types of Tommy Robinson against imagrants. These traditions and folklore do still need challenging from a modern critical lense (like how blackface has been removed from Morris dancing). Nor should they be preserved exactly how they used to be, because folklore and customs have always changed with the times. Having a good understanding of our past, critically understanding and accepting of the problems in it will absolutely contribute to decolonisation. Hopefully, having a solid grasp of our own traditions and folklore in a meaningful positive way will allow us to step back from clinging desperately to the parts of Welsh, Scottish and Irish culture we cling to because we don't think we have our own. Doing so will also hopefully allow for more support of the Welsh, Scottish and Irish independence movements. Also, it will hopefully stop the rampant cultural appropriation of other sacred traditions - it's ridiculous that modern wiccans believe that smudging with a non native plant (white sage) that's being driven to extinction by over harvesting will clear any sort of bad luck.
#they speak#england#english culture#sincerely someone who's tired#yes we have traditional folk costumes and folklore and architecture styles and chruch traditions#our language is cultural - just because it is now a (forced) lingua franca don't forget that#please just go to a local museum or library and pick up a book of local folklore and history#go to the slightly shit village or town fête and watch the slightly shit morris dancers - do you know why they're slightly shit?#bc they're all Old. they're the only ones really actively participating in it#londoners especially stop doing this - of course you think there's no culture if you've never actually left london and actively participate#*participated in it

today i tried to put a frozen pizza in the oven. it took me twenty minutes because i got waylaid by the box, which had instructions on it in eight different languages, in combination with my brain, which goes ooooooooooh at this under the right wrong circumstances. all of the "preparation" headers were in all caps (TILBEREDNING, PRÉPARATION, BEREIDINGSWIJZE) except the german one (Zubereitung), presumably because they wanted to prove they were correctly capitalizing their nouns? it's adorable. also: none of these eight languages is english, but the box does have phrases like "no flavor enhancers" and "stone baked" on it in english only, which says something, even if it's something every non-english speaker is already intimately aware of. my german is theoretically near native which makes it very goofy that i would absolutely not have known that the germans say "nativ" instead of some variety of "virgin" when describing olive oil. should we take this as a sign that not only does german olive oil not fuck (same as all the other olive oils), but the germans don't even consider they might want to? or does this mean german olive oil is unusually sexually experienced? as so often, the belgians win another "who has their flag printed on this product the most" competition. no one else in this part of the world can keep up with their french-dutch chaos swag, and they didn't even bother putting the belgian flag with the german and austrian ones in this case. as a contrast to the germans: the first two words of the spanish description of what's in this box are "pizza horneada", so, you know. the spanish aceite de oliva may be virgen extra, but the pizza is horny! my sincerest apologies to any spanish speakers. i know that's not what it means, you deserve better. (what happens if you put german olive oil in spanish pizza? do we even dare contemplate the outcomes?) anyway. karma acts swiftly, because do you want to guess what happened to me after all this? after studying this box in absolutely unprecedented detail? yeah. i had to fish it out of the trash to check what temperature to set my oven to.
#in my defense. all eight languages on this box use the same numbers so that wasn't the interesting part#oooooh wait actually! the front of the box has a) english and b) italian on it (because of course they're pretending this is italian pizza)#italian is ALSO not one of the eight languages on the back. a ten language box!#how do we add two more. bigger pizza bigger box more space? i'm sure we could make this an even dozen#*#the pizza is in the oven now btw. next go around i'll make my own again and save some time

The reality of English becoming the world's lingua franca will mean that people who are not native English speakers will also have a say on how the language is spoken.
From Wikipedia in "World Englishes"
When the number of bilingual English speakers, as it will likely be the case in this century, equals or outnumbers the ones in the "homelands" of English like the UK and the USA, they will soon start adapting the English language to their own worldviews and uses, and in fact they are already doing so, but they will do it with full confidence. For sure, speakers of "proper English" will complain, but what are they gonna do about it?
We will see some interesting developments in our lifetime.
#cosas mias#in fact if you read about it there is a possiblity that there will be a language divergence between international english or global english#and english from the 'inner sphere' such as the USA and the UK#that is of course assuming the whole thing doesn't just collapse and it is replaced by another language which is not impossible

o tanadrin, normal politics understander, i'm an american with a german mother (finally applied for my first german passport last month but i'm told processing times are around 3mo, hoping it gets through alright because I would really love to have an EU passport right about now). i'm not a doomer, the current state of affairs enrages me and makes me want to act more than wallow, but by god it's getting really bleak out here. is there any barometer you would look to for a time-to-flee-the-country alert? besides the presidential statement that anyone can and will be sent to a death camp in el salvadore on a whim
you do not need my permission or anyone else's to move countries if you want to (aside from the relevant immigration authorities i mean. you definitely need their permission). if you've got an easy route to an EU passport your main obstacles are just gonna be the usual things that are impediments to moving like how much it costs and finding a job and maybe the language a bit if you're not fluent (and especially if you move to a city without a big anglophone immigrant community).
i have no special insights here about what you "should" do. i come from a long line of people on both sides of my family who for the last several centuries have had the habit of fucking off to new places whenever the fancy took them, and am in general in favor of people spending at least a little time living overseas if they can bc it's an interesting and character-building experience. i will say you should be clear-eyed about the difficulties. money, jobs, language. also just the alienating effect moving to a new place where you don't know anybody can have. but you gotta weigh that against your personal feelings about staying put, how safe you feel, and your ability to maintain your current standard of living where you are.
#you can still vote in federal elections from overseas too btw#and of course if you have an eu passport you can always move to an english-speaking country like ireland#or to any number of big cities with large english-speaking communities like berlin#and while language learning as an adult can be hard and requires deliberate effort#it is by no means impossible#i would say in fact it's something anyone can do given enough time and effort#(the hard part is forcing yourself to put in the effort)#us politics

"oh, Charles, you're such an angel."
Max hears it often. he picks up the phrases chirped by the girls around. it was said by fans, PR managers and once he had even heard it from a Ferrari mechanic. and Max totally and utterly disagrees.
Charles is no angel. on and off the track.
he is a bloody menace.
because angels don't look like that. with a slight squint when there's a storm brewing in the depths of green eyes in the middle of a sunny day.
angels don't get so angry you're afraid to approach. angels don't hold grudges. angels are quick to forgive.
angels don't smile like that. smirking, a little arrogant, covering it with their innocence. and showing a little of the soft tip of the tongue between their teeth.
angels are measured. they take their time. they are neat and tidy. they never make a mess of crumpled sheets and clothes.
angels are gentle. angels never squeeze skin until it bruises, bite until it darkens, or pull hair so hard it brings tears to the eyes.
and even more so, angels don't moan. not painfully, but sweetly, like melted chocolate with marzipan that leaves marks on your fingers. hot. frank. naked. absolutely wasted.
angels don't expose their necks, don't bare collarbones, giving more space for someone’s lips to leave marks.
angels don't press closer, scratching back until it’s bleeding. angels don’t choke on passion and never create their own.
but he falls asleep in the most angelic way. with his nose against Max's neck and the blanket pulled up to his eyes. he throws an arm and a leg over the body next to him, pulls closer, smiles warmly, and lowers his long fluffy eyelashes.
people easily fall for it.
"oh, Charles, you're such an angel."
but Max knows that Charles isn't an angel at all. he's a real demon in the flesh. but it's much easier to love him like that.

#lestappen#drabble#red and black fics#i don't know wtf has happened to me i never wrote anything guess im going crazy and its lestappen's fault#I'll do whatever just not to study pružnost a pevnost#its like strength and flexibility of materials in czech?.. creepy shit but very important#and english of course is not my first language so i really hope that i didn't do any mistakes#but i love their duality and how everyone percieves Charles as “angel” when he's a real menace#so yeah i hope you enjoyed#have a great day everyone!!

friendly reminder that Monica Dutton has every right to criticize the man who branded her husband - his own son! - because he refused to take her to clinic for an abortion, who caused her husband so much pain that he still can't forgive it.
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton has every right to worry about her son's future and try to protect him from that man (like any normal mother would in her place).
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton has every right to tell her husband when he is wrong and not blindly agree with all his actions and be a doormat.
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton isn't obligated to like her husband's family. she isn't obligated to like John and the ranch, for fuck's sake. especially if something bad happens to her family because of them.
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton isn't obligated to be a bitch like your precious Beth, and that she is very strong in her own way.
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton is a loving and supportive wife and mother, and she tries to be there for her husband and son even when she herself is going through the most terrible grief of all.
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton is the heart of this show, the most sane and human, and even the characters themselves know it and are drawn to her inner light (yes, even John and Beth).
friendly reminder that Monica Dutton got her well-deserved happy ending and there is nothing you whiners can do about it.

ppl on twitter r weird idk bc a lot of the “tumblr prose” they shit on are just,,, examples of prose poetry? i agree w criticisms ab writing that can be too flowery or whatever while lacking actual substance in order to seem more “profound.” still, refusing to be analytical beyond the obvious surface level bc it’s “too dramatic” or “not that deep” just stifles a stylistic kind of artistic expression while adding fuel to the rampant problem of anti-intellectualism. like ya cringe, but cringe imo will always be preferable to whatever soulless ai shit people keep spreading around.
#like let’s be forreal for a second if the tumblr prose was written in an italics serif font yall would be busting everywhere#not to mention most of the posts yall use as examples r from like 2010 or something and shitposts of course they’re dated#just random thoughts idk if this is coherent english isn’t my first language#thoughts#writing#prose#tumblr prose#prose poetry#poetry#nyxposting#yall sound like that lady on the subway who was shitting on girls who like pomegranates idk#writeblr
