Hitachi’s Innovative Power Transmission Technology Ensures Clean Energy for NY Homes
Making long-distance energy transfer a reality
Decarbonization goals require the government to work closely with the private sector to develop effective solutions for clean energy transmission. These public-private partnerships, such as the ambitious project in New York leveraging Hitachi’s high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, is essential if objectives at the state and local levels are to be achieved.
However, though emerging tools and technologies aim to reduce carbon emissions, the problem of electricity transmission has been a major obstacle. The project in New York is setting the bar for public-private partnerships in the energy sector with Hitachi’s unique technology and is making long-distance energy transfer a reality.
Renewable energy transmission to power New York
The state of New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act has set a target to be powered by 70% renewable energy by 2030^ . Historically, the state has been reliant on traditional and dispatchable energy sources like gas and coal. But most renewable energy sources must be held in reserve until needed. Accessing renewable energy on demand requires a means of storing power for later use.
Initially, the challenge was to find a suitable renewable power reservoir that was well-positioned for the transfer of renewable energy to and from the state. As Quebec relies mostly on hydropower generation, its infrastructure and capacity provided renewable energy storage capabilities to its neighbor. Next, an environmentally responsible means of bringing clean hydropower from Quebec to New York City was facilitated by Hitachi’s HVDC technology.
As the technology powers the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) link between Quebec and New York City, it deploys long distances underground and underwater, to bypass legacy transmission bottlenecks and meet the growing demand for clean power. Using Hitachi’s HVDC Light technology, CHPE will transfer up to 1,250 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 1 million New York homes.
Hitachi’s HVDC for clean energy transmission
As a New York City mandate requiring the installation of electric appliances comes into force, demand for electricity in the city will grow. With HVDC Light’s ability to promote resource diversity to overall resource reliability, the CHPE system will be better equipped to meet the increase in electricity consumption.
HVDC Light further supports the state’s climate goals by maintaining a low environmental impact, and its converter stations likewise have a small carbon footprint. The CHPE project is expected to create 1,400 jobs from the construction phase, bringing $50 billion in economic benefits to New York state. The impact of the project is projected to be equal to removing 44% of passenger vehicles from the city. ^^

The smokestacks on the aging Sherco coal power plant tower over gleaming solar panels that stretch across thousands of acres of farmland.
The polluting coal plant is on its way out, scheduled for retirement in the next five years. It’s generated billions of dollars’ worth of electricity in its 50-year life, but the most valuable of its parts is the plug — how it connects to the grid that powers our homes.
Instead of letting it go to waste as the fossil fuel plant closes, Xcel Energy is going to leave it plugged in to connect the largest solar project in the Upper Midwest, and one of the largest in the entire country, directly to the grid.
Repurposing the so-called interconnection system is short-circuiting what could have been seven years of bureaucracy and red tape to get this electricity distributed to its customers.
Experts say this is the secret to solving America’s clean energy dilemma: There is more electricity from clean energy waiting to get connected to the grid than the entire amount of energy currently on the grid. The years-long delays are an existential threat to many projects’ chances of getting built.
The US could essentially double the capacity of its electrical grid overnight by plugging renewables projects into old fossil fuel power plants, University of California Berkeley researchers found, whether they be coal, gas or oil. And projects could be plugged into existing plants, not just ones that are retiring.
“This should be one of the main strategies that we adopt going forward, because we already have so many existing assets, so much grid infrastructure and we don’t want to just throw them away,” said Umed Paliwal, a senior scientist at UC Berkeley and a lead author of the study.

"Researchers at Aalto University's Department of Applied Physics have found a new way to create tiny hurricanes of light—known to scientists as vortices—that can carry information. The method is based on manipulating metallic nanoparticles that interact with an electric field.
The design method, belonging to a class of geometries known as quasicrystals, was conceived by Doctoral Researcher Kristian Arjas and experimentally realized by Doctoral Researcher Jani Taskinen, both from Professor Päivi Törmä's Quantum Dynamics group. The discovery represents a fundamental step forward in physics and carries the potential for entirely new ways of transmitting information.
The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.
A vortex is—in this case—like a hurricane that occurs in a beam of light, where a calm and dark center is surrounded by a ring of bright light. Just like the eye of a hurricane is calm due to the winds around it blowing in different directions, the eye of the vortex is dark due to the electric field of bright light pointing to different directions on different sides of the beam.
Previous physics research has connected what kind of vortices can appear with how much symmetry there is in the structure that produces them. For example, if particles in the nanoscale are arranged in squares, the produced light has a single vortex; hexagons produce a double vortex and so on. More complex vortices require at least octagonal shapes.
Now Arjas, Taskinen and the team unlocked a method for creating geometric shapes that theoretically support any kind of vortex."

Okay okay I’ll ask him, sure, yes, informed consent etc etc.
As for helping, ummm if you’ve done any experimenting similar to this with dimensional frequencies (your knowledge on how your interdimensional internet is functioning would probably be useful) anything regarding that would likely be a great help in pinpointing exactly where to go so nobody instantly dies. However if no such information is available that’s fine I can figure it out-

The Biden administration on Tuesday released rules designed to speed up permits for clean energy while requiring federal agencies to more heavily weigh damaging effects on the climate and on low-income communities before approving projects like highways and oil wells.
As part of a deal to raise the country’s debt limit last year, Congress required changes to the National Environmental Policy Act, a 54-year-old bedrock law that requires the government to consider environmental effects and to seek public input before approving any project that necessitates federal permits.
That bipartisan debt ceiling legislation included reforms to the environmental law designed to streamline the approval process for major construction projects, such as oil pipelines, highways and power lines for wind- and solar-generated electricity. The rules released Tuesday, by the White House Council on Environmental Quality, are intended to guide federal agencies in putting the reforms in place.
But they also lay out additional requirements created to prioritize projects with strong environmental benefits, while adding layers of review for projects that could harm the climate or their surrounding communities.
“These reforms will deliver smarter decisions, quicker permitting, and projects that are built better and faster,” said Brenda Mallory, chair of the council. “As we accelerate our clean energy future, we are also protecting communities from pollution and environmental harms that can result from poor planning and decision making while making sure we build projects in the right places.”
The move comes as President Biden rushes to push through a slew of major environmental rules ahead of November’s presidential election, including policies to limit climate-warming pollution from cars, trucks, power plants and oil and gas wells; to protect the habitats of the sage grouse and other endangered species; to ban asbestos; and to remove so-called forever chemicals from tap water.
