one of the things that i think we should pay attention to, socially, about the disney v. desantis thing is that it is really highlighting the importance of remembering nuance.
in a purely neutral sense, if you engage in something problematic, that does not mean you are necessarily agreeing with what makes it problematic. and i am worried that we have become... so afraid of any form of nuance.
disney isn't my friend, they're a corporate monopoly that bastardized copyright laws for their own benefit, ruin the environment, and abuse their workers (... and many other things). this isn't a hypothetical for me - i grew up in florida. i also worked for the actual Walt Disney World; like, in the parks. i am keenly aware of the ways they hurt people, because they hurt me. i fully believe that part of the reason florida is so conservative is because it's been an "open secret" for years now that disney lobbies the government to keep minimum wage down, and i know they worked hard to keep the parks unmasked and open during the worst parts of Covid. they purposefully keep their employees in poverty. they are in part responsible for the way the floridian government works.
desantis is still, by a margin that is frankly daunting, way worse. the alternative here isn't just "republicans win", it's actual fascism.
in a case like this, where the alternative is to allow actual fascism into united states legislation - where, if desantis wins, there are huge and legal ramifications - it's tempting to minimize the harm disney is also doing, because... well, it's not fascism. but disney isn't the good guy, either, which means republicans are having a field day asking activists oh, so you think their treatment of their employees is okay?
we have been trained there is a right answer. you're right! you're in the good group, and you're winning at having an opinion.
except i have the Internet Prophecy that in 2-3 months, even left-wing people will be ripping apart activists for having "taken disney's side". aren't i an anti-capitalist? aren't i pro-union? aren't i one of the good ones? removed from context and nuance (that in this particular situation i am forced to side with disney, until an other option reveals itself), my act of being like "i hope they have goofy rip his throat out onstage, shaking his lifeless body like a dog toy" - how quickly does that seem like i actually do support disney?
and what about you! at home, reading this. are you experiencing the Thought Crime of... actually liking some of the things disney has made? your memories of days at the parks, or of good movies, or of your favorite show growing up. maybe you are also evil, if you ever enjoyed anything, ever, at all.
to some degree, the binary idealization/vilification of individual motive and meaning already exists in the desantis case. i have seen people saying not to go to the disney pride events because they're cash grabs (they are). i've seen people saying you have to go because they're a way to protest. there isn't a lot of internet understanding of nuance. instead it's just "good show of support" or "evil bootlicking."
this binary understanding is how you can become radicalized. when we fear nuance and disorder, we're allowing ourselves the safety of assuming that the world must exist in binary - good or bad, problematic or "not" problematic. and unfortunately, bigots want you to see the world in this binary ideal. they want you to get mad at me because "disney is taking a risk for our community but you won't sing their praises" and they want me to get mad at you for not respecting the legit personal trauma that disney forced me through.
in a grander scheme outside of disney: what happens is a horrific splintering within activist groups. we bicker with each other about minimal-harm minimal-impact ideologies, like which depiction of bisexuality is the most-true. we gratuitously analyze the personal lives of activists for any sign they might be "problematic". we get spooked because someone was in a dog collar at pride. we wring our hands about setting an empty shopping mall on fire. we tell each other what words we may identify ourselves by. we get fuckin steven universe disk horse when in reality it is a waste of our collective time.
the bigots want you to spend all your time focusing on how pristine and pretty you and your interests are. they want us at each other's throats instead of hand in hand. they want to say see? nothing is ever fucking good enough for these people.
and they want their followers to think in binary as well - a binary that's much easier to follow. see, in our spaces, we attack each other over "proper" behavior. but in bigoted groups? they attack outwards. they have someone they hate, and it is us. they hate you, specifically, and you are why they have problems - not the other people in their group. and that's a part of how they fucking keep winning.
some of the things that are beloved to you have a backbone in something terrible. the music industry is a wasteland. the publishing industry is a bastion of white supremacy. video games run off of unpaid labor and abuse.
the point of activism was always to bring to light that abuse and try to stop it from happening, not to condemn those who engage in the content that comes from those industries. "there is no ethical consumption under late capitalism" also applies to media. your childhood (and maybe current!) love of the little mermaid isn't something you should now flinch from, worried you'll be a "disney adult". wanting the music industry to change for the better does not require that you reject all popular music until that change occurs. you can acknowledge the harm something might cause - and celebrate the love that it has brought into your life.
we must detach an acknowledgment of nuance from a sense of shame and disgust. we must. punishing individual people for their harmless passions is not doing good work. encouraging more thoughtful, empathetic consumption does not mean people should feel ashamed of their basic human capacities and desires. it should never have even been about the individual when the corporation is so obviously the actual evil. this sense that we must live in shame and dread of our personal nuances - it just makes people bitter and hopeless. do you have any idea how scared i am to post this? to just acknowledge the idea of nuance? that i might like something nuanced, and engage in it joyfully? and, at the same time, that i'm brutally aware of the harm that they're doing?
"so what do i do?" ... well, often there isn't a right answer. i mean in this case, i hope mickey chops off ron's head and then does a little giggle. but truth be told, often our opinions on nuanced subjects will differ. you might be able to engage in things that i can't because the nuance doesn't sit right with me. i might think taylor swift is a great performer and a lot of fun, and you might be like "raquel, the jet fuel emissions". we are both correct; neither of us have any actual sway in this. and i think it's important to remember that - the actual scope of individual responsibility. like, i also love going to the parks. Thunder Mountain is so fun. you (just a person) are not responsible for the harm that Disney (the billion dollar corporation) caused me. i don't know. i think it's possible to both enjoy your memories and interrogate the current state of their employment policies.
there is no right way to interrogate or engage with nuance - i just hope you embrace it readily.

PLEASE STOP HARASSING DECK NINE DEVS AND LIS PLAYERS WHO DON'T AGREE WITH YOU.
Death threats are not okay.
Telling people to kill themselves is not okay.
Harassing people over fictional ships is not okay.
Harassing people over their opinion of a game is not okay.
Harassing already overstressed, overworked employees is not okay. ESPECIALLY since it's been documented they've been working under discriminatory and predatory management, been through multiple crunches, and have an unidentified neo-Nazi on their team who management did not properly address and fire.
You can still be critical of a game and not harass the people who made it. Hell, you can absolutely hate a game and still be respectful to the people who made it. I'm sure the creators are far more likely to listen to the fans if we give constructive criticism than if we irresponsibly and cruelly send threats.
I know most people who see this haven't sent hate, and to those people: this post isn't about you. I massively respect you for maintaining your rationality and empathy. But for those who have sent hate or are thinking of doing so, please reconsider. Sending hate isn't going to change anything; it'll only break the fandom even further apart and stress out overworked employees. If you're going to be mad, be mad at the higher-ups at Square Enix for turning the franchise into a cash cow and at the upper management at Deck Nine for overworking and alienating their employees. (Also be mad at that 1 neo-Nazi because seriously, WTF!?)
But please, even to the worst of the worst, do not send death threats or harass people.

God, Forgive Me
I've finished what I started. I got rid of this nagging burden on my shoulders. Did it make me feel better? Was it worth it? Should I have died so painfully? No one deserves it. No father deserves his son to die like that. No sister would want that to happen to her brother. It's painful. It's scary. It's lonely. I can't stand it. Did you really have to force yourself to suffer in order to finally understand the lesson? Without that, you wouldn't have anything in your head, would you, 76? Did it help you find yourself, did it become the "key" that you have been searching for in what seems like eternity? Why, just why? I already had everything I needed, and I didn't even acknowledge it. I don't have to suffer to deserve the title of a human being. I'm an idiot, I'm a jerk, I make a lot of mistakes and I bring a lot of pain to others, but first of all to myself. Through what I do to myself, my loved ones suffer. And I'm tired. I want to rest, I want to be safe. I want to be myself. I don't want to force this person to go through all this for an empty goal. I don't want Clyde's friend to suffer, because who am I to hurt someone he cares about? Who let me play the sculptor of myself? Who allowed me to treat this man so carelessly? You don't owe anyone anything. You are not in debt to yourself, you do not have to torment yourself in order to calm your own soul. I don't have to torture myself to calm my own soul. I will no longer bring unreasonable pain to this person. I will no longer bring unreasonable pain to myself. I am me, and that's just a fact. And does it matter compared to the universe how much I resemble myself from the past, how much I've lost, how many years I've spent on something I don't understand? I'm just a speck of dust, and that's fine. I don't have to worry about such things. I am me, with all the losses, with all the gains, pros and cons. And I don't give a shit what gets molded out of me in the future, because I don't want to disfigure it anymore. I'm just a fucked up man, that's all. That's my whole point. I'm a weirdo, and that's a good thing.

I think the show has a good narrative set up to dodge around Disney censorship while also telling an emotionally satisfying story.
If the core thrust of the season is for Agatha, "the covenless witch," to heal the primal wound of that rejection/trauma and have a coven again, then there's already something delightfully queer about that as a journey toward growth, yeah? An all female coven is kind of inherently queer and socially stigmatized due to that.
And if, at the same time, Rio turns out to have been trying to help (in her oblique way) and she and Agatha still clearly have feelings for each other -- sexy feelings, both passionately aggro and otherwise -- then that can be the great queer subtext that plays into that resolution and allows for us to spin things off further in fanfic and fanart.
It sucks that Disney is a monopoly and that artists have to work within their boundaries in order to have a job, but I think there's the potential to play with those boundaries and still do something good with BOTH explicitly canon queer characters and queer coding/intentional subtext for the main character.
That is what I see as a very real possibility, given both the narrative so far and the limits I'm aware of from Disney. Is it my ideal? No. But we do not live in an ideal world and the artists are not working under the conditions they wish they could. It is what it is.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT BUCK I LOVE LUCKY BUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pronouns personality fun facts etc I love buck…
Kingyoto uses he/him pronouns, but is a girl.
^ to Salmonids, pronouns are indicative of statues and act more like honorifics. Due to Inklish not having terms in their language that properly suit this idea, the translation leaves “he/him” to most blue collar class working common folk, and “she/her” to running salmonids and Salmonids who are probably destined to Run later in life…
Kingyoto is probably the only salmonid in Hazard Relief, Inkopolis isn’t a super diverse area, being primarily inklings, and he didn’t speak much if at all ANY Inklish. He could understand the language (to an extent), but has trouble mimicking the vocal notes used in the language.
Started working in Hazard Relief when he was 13, it was near a not-fully developed AC TOKYO, and it wasn’t under the name “Hazard Relief,” he would sift and pull Salmonid remains from up the river, where Salmonids die or get killed in the Homerun. Eventually Senshin Corp. got formed, and provided a more “elegant” approach to these jobs.
When more jobs in this position opened up— Kingyoto decided to move to Inkopolis solely because he’s a die hard Squid Sisters fan.
Kingyoto lives pretty far from the Grizzco office where he works, this is because most houses near Inkopolis don’t follow the housing standard in Salmonid communities (needing a certain humidity content, needing a certain type of bed, etc etc.)
Fido taught Kingyoto most of the Inklish he knows, Kingyoto’s job was initially heavy lifting since Inklings couldn’t go in the water, but he somehow managed to climb the ranks slightly.
Kingyoto is certified to manage a few heavy machines. Likes to make sure they’re in tip top condition.
Kingyoto has a shitty truck that he’s been driving before he was even legally allowed to. It has about 4 different radios inside of it because he keeps forgetting to get rid of the ones that break.
Likes to attend after work get togethers, but doesn’t drink. He’s subjected to way too many Drunk Comments (tm) at a time, tends to be very patient despite it.
He likes honey flavored foods and drinks, which seems to be a popular beverage in Salmonid cities (and tastes very different from Honey teas), it is NOT so popular in Inkopolis. He manages with honey - vanilla teas though.

Opponents of an expansion to a marine container port on B.C.'s South Coast held a news conference in Vancouver Wednesday to reiterate their concerns about the impact on the environment and local jobs if the project, recently approved by the federal government, goes ahead.
"There's times when we do need to say, 'No. We do need to say 'no,'" said Rueben George, a member of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, as he pointed to his nation's territorial waters behind him from Vancouver's CRAB Park with the Port of Vancouver in the background.
The group of those publicly opposing the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2) in Delta, B.C., about 35 kilometres south of Vancouver, is growing and now includes two unions, the International Longshore & Warehouse Union of Canada and the B.C. General Employees' Union, along with a dozen conservation organizations.

My personal life is in chaos right now and for the most part I’m only considering happy or hopeful media. I assumed TGR would easily fall into the hopeful camp because Jean’s healing is the most important thing (or that my own excitement might cancel out any other requirements I had) but I’m not even a chapter in and I may need to reevaluate. Can someone who’s read the book give me some non-spoiler/limited spoiler insight into the hopefulness vibe? Does it end on a good note for Jean and Jeremy? Is the angst mostly working through old shit or is new trauma being accumulated? (I am not opposed to learning about new traumatic events that happened in the past, but want a handle on whether focus is healing/growth or in the thick of it emotional turmoil)

the fact that I might be about to go from being almost completely financially dependent on my parents to being able to support myself fully is unbelievable like. what. how did I get here. I'm not complaining by any means but part of me honestly thought I'd never get to be independent and if I get this promotion I WILL cry about it. oh my god.
#for refence I would more than triple my income. I did the math and if I stay with my parents I'll be able to put more than $1000/month in#savings#which is more than I even make in a month right now! and that's accounting for my increased expenses from having a car!#sorry for all the rambling I've been doing for the last week about this but it's not gonna stop until I either get promoted or they hire#somebody else#and if I DO get promoted I'll probably ramble about that lmao#I'm just excited ok!! I'm on the edge of success and like. MY version of success. a decent job that pays enough for me to live#which I don't hate and am capable of doing without tanking my mental or physical health#anyway my life might be about to completely change for the better#and like it ALREADY changed for the better when I got hired at this place but I was just happy to have a job at all#I'm so happy I took the risk to try working here when I had no clue what it would actually be like. one of the best decisions I've ever made#it's not perfect. far from it. it's still a customer service job and comes with all that that entails#but it's a good customer service job with a company that cares about it's employees and doesn't just say that they do#in fact they DON'T claim to care about their employees because they don't need to. it's plainly obvious in how they treat us#like clearly they care about profits but because the profits go TO the employees (it's an employee owned company)#they care a lot about retention and the work environment. if the employees aren't happy there is no company
