Happy Empire Day! Today is the anniversary of the date that Joshua Abraham Norton proclaimed himself Emperor of the United States in 1859. His fellow San Franciscans were happy to humor him, honoring his promissory notes in lieu of cash and printing his proclamations in local newspapers.

One of his proclamations ordered that a bridge be built between San Francisco and Oakland. This would, in fact, come to pass in the Twentieth Century, leading to a Change dot Org petition to rename the bridge in Emperor Norton's honor.

While the petition was unsuccessful, the petitioners went on to establish the Emperor Norton Trust to celebrate his life and legacy.

My absolute favorite historical figure is Emperor Norton. The man moved to San Francisco, lost all of his money, then went "Fuck the government. I'm the emperor of the United States." And everyone in San Francisco went "Oh shit I guess he's the emperor of the United States" and just went along with whatever he said.

San Francisco has a street named for his majesty Emperor Norton at last!

In mid-April, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to commemoratively change the name of the 600 block of Commercial Street between Chinatown and the Financial District to Emperor Norton Place, in honor of the beloved historical SF folk hero. And it took just 24 days for the sign to go up, as the Emperor Norton Trust posted Friday that the Emperor Norton Street sign has been installed.

He was portrayed by John Lithgow in the full cast audio adaptation of The Sandman.
