Emily Davison gave her life in front of the King’s horse in my hometown for me to have my voice heard. As a woman it’s important to me to exercise my right to vote at every opportunity. I’ve voted in the European elections. Have you? #suffrage #suffragettes #votesforwomen #nuwss #epsom #emilydavison #europeanelections #vote https://www.instagram.com/p/BxzWxJHnN8W/?igshid=15faokft5427z

#100years ago the #UKParliament passed the #RepresentationOfThePeopleAct . Only allowing at the time women over 30 to #Vote, were property owners, a member or married to a member of a Local Government Register, or they were a graduate in a university constituency. It was a beginning towards social, philosophical and political equality for women. That was 1918. It started with the #Suffragists (National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies) in 1897 who protested through petitions and lobbying of #MPs, for #WomensRights to be granted. By 1903 after six years there was little progress shown for a 50K membership. #EmmelinePankhurst among many others could no longer maintain the status quo of passivity. The Suffragists represented mainly middle-class women. The #Suffragette movement mobilised working-class women to defy convention and defy the backwards laws that existed only to bound women as second class citizens; voiceless and unseen. Confrontation was a means to an end. Many #Suffragettes were imprisoned and disgraced by their loved ones for seeking equality. Violent acts on both sides unhinged the #government and parliament. All men and at most all despised Suffrage. The pain and the suffering continued. Pay a fine for protesting or face prison. Most chose prison, often protesting within their incarceration by hunger strikes. Societal bitterness towards any woman who strived for equal gender rights normalised. Ultimately, to engage direct national and global conversation towards an accord took the life of a Suffragette, #EmilyDavison in 1913. Her death, documented as an accident stoked the already high rising fires of change. However, true progress was still five years away. It would take the culmination of those women’s immense efforts before and then during #WorldWarOne for the UK government to show willing in passing a stingy Act. By then, the argument was not if, but when women would finally have equal political rights. #EqualPay , Women’s rights and true equality are still debated today. This marks a moment that what was accomplished 100 years ago could be encouraged through the education of equality the world can achieve a near future of #EqualRights #V4W

25th Oct-
From the weekend I talked to a head of year art teacher at a all girls private school in Birmingham and I talked to her about my project and we shared ideas and created a mind map. This helped me to develop ideas and think of other pathways that I could develop through. One idea that intrigued me was the historical aspects of the women's suffrage movement as I watched the video of Emily Davison who killed herself on the race track and ran in front of the princes horse as this gained publicity of the media and the nation. Therefore analysing my images you can see that I’ve gained inspiration from the suffragette colour schemes identity. I have also used the technique of creating friction with double sided tape and felt. I used circular motions to create a texture of fine threads binding together. Showing the links and the roots of the movement of the suffragettes.

On the 104th anniversary of the death of Emily Davison, if you're a woman or a man of voting age in the U.K. and eligible to vote (British, Irish, Commonwealth and EU citizens - if you're domiciled here there's pretty much no excuse not to become a registered voter!) get out there and have your say in the running of this country! More registered voters didn't vote in the last general election than actually turned out! Don't say your vote doesn't matter! #vote #generalelection #UK #votesforwomen #emilydavison

Today we mark 100yrs of the passing of The Representation Of The People Act on 6th Feb 1918 where women finally got the right to vote in the United Kingdom BUT only women aged 30yrs old and above whom they themselves or their husbands had property qualifications were allowed to vote, read white and middle class. Meaning 8.5 million women were eligible to vote in their first general election on 18th Dec 1918. Also in 1918 on 21st Nov The Parliament Qualification Of Women Act was passed allowing women to stand for parliament. It unfortunately would be another decade before all women 21yrs of age and above would be allowed to vote via The Equal Franchise Act in 1928 meaning 15 million women were eligible to vote on 30th May 1929, eventually gaining the same rights all man had gained ten years earlier regarding votes. So as great the the achievement is, many working class, ethnic minorities and northern women were snubbed in 1918. I will mark the step forward that was made on this day 100yrs ago BUT I won’t be celebrating selective white Feminism and what rose on the backs and graft of so many and left them out in the cold and forgotten for years. There is still a lot that needs to be done in terms of equality especially when looked at intersection-ally when it comes to women’s rights. So thanks sisters but the job ain’t done yet 100yrs on. #WomensSuffrage #Suffragette #Suffragist #VotesForWomen #WSPU #WomensSocialAndPoliticalUnion #100YearsOfVotingWomen #100YearsOfWomenVoting #MillicentFawcett #EmmelinePankhurst #EmilyWildingDavison #EmilyDavison #SophiaDuleepSingh #ChristabelPankhurst #AnnieKenney #MarionWallaceDunlop #KatherineWilloughbyMarchall #SylviaPankhurst #RosaMayBillinghurst #EmmelinePethickLawrence #PurpleWhiteAndGreen #PurpleForLoyaltyAndDignity #WhiteForPurity #GreenForHope #CatAndMouseAct #HungerStrike #PoliticalPrisoners #6thFeb1918 #TheRepresentationOfThePeopleAct #TheParliamentQualificationOfWomenAct #TheEqualFranchiseAct
