Today we mark 100yrs of the passing of The Representation Of The People Act on 6th Feb 1918 where women finally got the right to vote in the United Kingdom BUT only women aged 30yrs old and above whom they themselves or their husbands had property qualifications were allowed to vote, read white and middle class. Meaning 8.5 million women were eligible to vote in their first general election on 18th Dec 1918. Also in 1918 on 21st Nov The Parliament Qualification Of Women Act was passed allowing women to stand for parliament. It unfortunately would be another decade before all women 21yrs of age and above would be allowed to vote via The Equal Franchise Act in 1928 meaning 15 million women were eligible to vote on 30th May 1929, eventually gaining the same rights all man had gained ten years earlier regarding votes. So as great the the achievement is, many working class, ethnic minorities and northern women were snubbed in 1918. I will mark the step forward that was made on this day 100yrs ago BUT I won’t be celebrating selective white Feminism and what rose on the backs and graft of so many and left them out in the cold and forgotten for years. There is still a lot that needs to be done in terms of equality especially when looked at intersection-ally when it comes to women’s rights. So thanks sisters but the job ain’t done yet 100yrs on. #WomensSuffrage #Suffragette #Suffragist #VotesForWomen #WSPU #WomensSocialAndPoliticalUnion #100YearsOfVotingWomen #100YearsOfWomenVoting #MillicentFawcett #EmmelinePankhurst #EmilyWildingDavison #EmilyDavison #SophiaDuleepSingh #ChristabelPankhurst #AnnieKenney #MarionWallaceDunlop #KatherineWilloughbyMarchall #SylviaPankhurst #RosaMayBillinghurst #EmmelinePethickLawrence #PurpleWhiteAndGreen #PurpleForLoyaltyAndDignity #WhiteForPurity #GreenForHope #CatAndMouseAct #HungerStrike #PoliticalPrisoners #6thFeb1918 #TheRepresentationOfThePeopleAct #TheParliamentQualificationOfWomenAct #TheEqualFranchiseAct
