Decided to do @queerliblib s summer bingo cause I like reading and ticking boxes.

The rainbow books are spaces I already have a book in my immediate to-read pile, so I can track what I will fill in for sure.

Format switch: The Rainbow Parade by Emily Neilson, read in a read along formet.

This one was tricky cause I cannot read ebooks, no matter how much I try. So, I figured I'd go for something shorter and saw that they have read along books and decided to go with that. It's a cute little story that my conservative brother would not want to read to his child and that's a massive win.

Stonewall Award winner: The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

This has been sitting on my shelf for months and I read it in one sitting this morning. I really liked it, but it's another tick in the 'most young adult stories don't do it for me anymore' colomn, which if very long if i'm honest. Do recomend.

Memoir: All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson

A memoir about growing up black and gay. The voice was really good, and enhanced because it was read by the author.

Book with a Protagonist Older than 40: How Y'all Doing by Leslie Jordan

Focus of a memoir is the protagonist, right? Imma say it is. I've never been into instagram and such, so I didn't see Leslie Jordan's contant beyond what filtered to tumblr, but knew enough about him to be interested. A genuinly funny read, and he narrated it so well in the audio book.

Queer non-fiction: The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison by Hugh Ryan

An interesting and difficult read. Really highlights the cruelty of the criminal legal system and how pivitol it is to the queer community in New York.

Indigenous Author: This Town Sleeps by Dennis E. Staples

An interesting quick read. The audio book made switching POVs confusing at times, but not enough to really pull me out of the story. I adore the dog's name and the reason behind it.

Genre fiction: The Route of Ice and Salt by José Luis Zárate and translated by David Bowles

A retelling of the journey of The Demeter from Dracula, from the pov of the gay captain. Very literary and very good.

Comic, manga, or graphic novel: Anne: An Adpatation of Anne of Green Gables (Sort Of) by Kathleen Gros

I started another book for this one, but couldn't get into it, then I saw this one while browsing the library on libby and was hooked. A quick, easy read and very sweet. I love this version of Anne and the ways the original book events are adapted.

Set in the past: The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

Such a good read. I love the small bits of world building done through the differences in tales and rhymes we have today. Each character is very distinct and I would die for James Juniper.

Coming of age: The Western Alienation Merit Badge by Nancy Jo Cullen

tbh, I had no real idea what to expect with this one, probably more connections to merit badges. Really got into it and very emotional at points.

Main character doesn't share an identity with you: Melissa by Alex Gino

I've heard of this one, obviously, but never read it. It's very cute and I really enjoyed it.

Queer Picture book: Let Me Out: a pop-out about coming out! by Omis Razavi

Got this one through their crowdfunding years ago. It's great

Do a subject heading search to find a book: The Trees Grew Because I Bled There: Collected Stories by Eric LaRocca

I searched horror and found this one. Some of the stories are better than others, and the writing style made it a little hard for me to get into some of them, but very good overall.

Austin Musician Matt Hubbard Releases "Grandpa's Piano" today and Willie Nelson thinks you should listen.

Multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, and longtime Austinite Matt Hubbard has a new album, Grandpa’s Piano, out today!  

You may know Hubbard’s name from his work recording and co-producing numerous albums with Willie Nelson at Willie’s home studio in Luck, Texas. 

As a highly in-demand player not just in Austin but beyond, Hubbard has also worked with Wanda Jackson, Edie Brickell, Ray Price, Rickie Lee Jones, Fastball, Kurt Neilson, Randy Rodgers, Billy Bob Thornton, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Greezy Wheels, Jesse Dayton, Folk Uke, and Joe King Carrasco, as well as Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, Papa Mali and George Porter Junior in jam band 7 Walkers. 

In his book The Facts of Life and Other Dirty Jokes, Willie Nelson says "Matt Hubbard, remember that name. I believe you’ll be hearing a lot more from him in the future.“ When Willie gives you a heads up, you should listen.  

Stuck at home during the pandemic, Hubbard spent a lot of time playing his Grandpa James’ 1950’s Cable & Co. baby grand piano, and started a weekly live-stream in his living room called “Grandpa’s Piano.” He added songs each week to keep his audience engaged, and soon realized that he had enough new material to make a record. After being rewarded a City of Austin Economic Development Grant, he recorded a full length solo piano record with the help of Austin engineer Cris Burns. 

Hubbard’s music has been described as “back-alley beatnik blues” by the Austin Chronicle, and fittingly the opening track “Grandpa’s Piano” is an original boogie-woogie blues. “Robert’s Rumba” combines a Professor Longhair style left hand bass mixed with a right hand reminiscent of ragtime legend Scott Joplin. “Robert’s Rumba is dedicated to my late father, and it will also be available as written sheet music,” Hubbard tells us. “My father was always a huge supporter of my music, and I thought it would be fun to print up this song as traditional sheet music to allow others to play the piece. The whole record is dedicated to my mom, and our hometown church organist is excited to have the sheet music because she’s always wanted to play one of my songs.”

Track three, “Notes from the Underground” is a darker, more contemporary piece with a nod to author Fyodor Dostoevsky’s celebrated novel. “Lift Me Up” is a reimagined solo piano version of the song previously released on Nobody’s Fault but Mine, originally featuring Willie Nelson on guitar and vocals. “Emily & Lucy” is a New Orleans rumba influenced by James Booker. “Paws” and “Pendulum” are both spontaneous, boisterous improvisations captured live in the studio. “Hill Country Morning” has a peaceful vibe. “It’s a reflection of the timeless nature of the Texas Hill Country to the west of Austin,” says Hubbard. 

The Austin Chronicle described his debut album as “a loose-limbed affair, at times recalling the melodic side of Tom Waits, while also shining light on his blues roots.” This new album is unlike Hubbard’s debut in that it’s a solo piano record, but Hubbard’s musicianship and his aesthetic as an artist are consistent, and they shine here on Grandpa’s Piano.

Grandpa’s Piano is out today on Michabou Records. It will be available on vinyl, online, and as sheet music, and Hubbard will celebrate with a live concert at Austin Beer Garden & Brewery Co.

Hello fellow readers! I’ve been busy reading for the Magical Readathon (see that post here) but I’ve been fitting in so many wonderful picture books as well! What have you been reading? Here are a few of my favorites from the past two weeks: 

Antiracist Baby by Ibram X. Kendi (Author) & Ashley Lukashevsky (Illustrator): I have been recommending this book to folks at work left and right. I don’t care how old you are - the message in this board book is incredibly powerful. 

Can I Give You a Squish? by Emily Neilson: Are you ready to start talking about consent early with your kiddos? THIS BOOK IS THE ONE. Neilson lets us follow a little merchild as they go around giving squishes, but quickly learn that not everyone wants a squish - and that’s ok! 

The End of Something Wonderful: A Practical Guide to a Backyard Funeral by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic (Author) & George Ermos (Illustrator): Talking to kids about death can be quite difficult, but this book helps make it a bit easier with a little humor, wonderful artwork, and a how-to guide on grieving for your lost pets. <3 

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce (Author) & Joe Bluhm (Illustrator): I’ve loved this book for a long time! It has a wonderful film adaptation, but the book speaks volumes for itself. It’s witty and so full of life. The power of storytelling takes root with this book as Mr. Morris Lessmore discovers the beauty in each story. 

I read so many other awesome books these past two weeks too but so little time to mention all of them. Definitely check out these awesome authors though. They all have WONDERFUL works for a variety of age groups, too:

Bio:

Xander is a rather unusual example of a werewolf. He comes from a clan that was established in the region of Scotland, where they’re known for being particularly violent. However, Xander averts all habits of this, and is a rather kind individual. Something his family has noted, but doesn’t hold against him. He also shows aptitude for being a leader, something his father noted and frequently complimented him for. Xander is currently the alpha of the Neilson clan, and is the oldest of seven children. His younger siblings all look up to him and frequently spend time with him. Xander’s father died fighting a human hunter who had wanted to kill a werewolf and take it’s pelt as a trophy. It was this moment where Xander’s first transformation took place, out of sheer fury towards his father’s death.

Xander takes after his mother the most, having her kindness and some of her looks. He wears a long coat with a somewhat Victorian styling to it,with a long sleeved dress shirt and cargo pants.. He’s naturally tall, coming in at 6'5, and wears boots that add an inch to his height. He inherited his mother’s unkempt hairstyle, but his father’s eyes and hair color. People who have looked into Xander’s eyes have noted a serenity in them, something that quickly becomes unsettling when he’s angered. Even with this however, Xander is kinder than most of his ancestors, and offers a quick smile to most people.

Xander is confident in most regards, something that he knows he’s earned not only through combat with others, but through being a natural born leader. Other werewolves from different packs have noted that he’s able to remain calm, even in stressful situations, some think this makes him weak because he prefers diplomacy over brute force. However, despite Xander’s kind nature, he is incredibly strong, capable of tearing trees from the ground and ripping through solid steel with his bare hands. His patience isn’t infinite, as many people have found out, though Xander will never start fights, he won’t hesitate to show why he’s alpha to those who would cause trouble.

Xander is a proud father to two children, both werewolf-human hybrids. His wife passed during childbirth, leaving him to raise them himself. The daughter, Emily is much more outgoing and active compared to her brother Arthur, who prefers to be in the background and is rather quiet.

The FMP Group Pitch Development Task

In your group you will develop a pitch further, expanding or even changing the idea. This means being much more specific about the event, its structure and the effect you want to have on the audience

1.    Storyboard the idea (pictures/drawings with descriptions of possible sections of the show. Justify how each section will work as a performance. Find ways to include ideas from any of the other pitches if you can. I suggest you start today with sharing any relevant research together

4.    Produce a ‘Group Pitch’ on a WIX site. Your pitch will be presented from this WIX site. Include live musical performances as well as playing other music/visuals that work with this idea from your WIX site. 

Make sure that everyone in your group takes part in the live performance part of your pitch in some way

Every musical idea must be backed up with how it will make an effective stage performance
