Final Entry
I am so fortunate to have undertaken this placement at Verge. Tesha, Anthia, Veronica and Maelise as well as the other interns Lucy and Isabella have worked so hard on this exhibition. I really enjoyed my time doing placement at Verge. I wanted to undertake my placement at Verge, because I see Arts Events Programming as a future career path. Anthia and I were talking about how stressful things can be organising a large event like the âUSU Creative Awards 2023â and I told her that seems like too much stress I donât know if I could ever do it after seeing how things work from behind the scenes. Anthia was so supportive, she told me I would be great in Arts Events Programming and Organising.
Last year I exhibited in the âUSU Creative Awards 2022â but I didnât see all of the hard work put into running the show. I didnât even install my own work last year (my video work "Trolley Herder", image below of the poster & actual video work below). After the âUSU Creative Awards 2022â Tesha asked me if I would be interested in showing in one of Vergeâs ArtBoxes this year. On Wednesday Anthia asked me if I wanted to extend my exhibition of my work ââO MALUâI âA TUPOUâ at the ArtBox in Fisher Library (image in this blog entry ). My work will be on exhibition there now until March 2024. On Wednesday Tesha also organised a studio meeting, next Wednesday 25/10/23, so she can see what Iâve been making to see if it fits Vergeâs next program. Though the placement is over, I havenât finished my work with Verge.

1. J. Enoch Powell (Oxford University Press, 1949)Â
This is the report of that which Herodotus of Halicarnassus hath sought out, that the things wrought of men be not blotted out by time, neither works great and marvellous performed of Greeks and barbarians be without fame. And first shall be told for what cause they warred one with another. (Powell 1949 (vol. 1): 1)Â
2. Aubrey De SĂŠlincourt (Penguin, 1954)Â
In this book, the result of my inquiries into history, I hope to do two things: to preserve the memory of the past by putting on record the astonishing achievements both of our own and of the Asiatic peoples; secondly, and more particularly, to show how these two races came into conflict. (De SĂŠlincourt 1954: 13)Â
3b. Aubrey De SĂŠlincourt (Penguin Classics, revised with a new introduction by A.R. Burn in 1972)Â
Herodotus of Halicarnassus, his Researches are here set down to preserve the memory of the past by putting on record the astonishing achievement both of our own and of other peoples; and more particularly, to show how they came into conflict. (De SĂŠlincourt, rev. Burn 1972: 41)Â
3c. Aubrey De SĂŠlincourtâs (Penguin Classics, revised edition edited by John Marincola, 1996)Â
Herodotus of Halicarnassus here displays his inquiry, so that human achievements may not be forgotten in time, and great and marvellous deedsâsome displayed by Greeks, some by barbariansâmay not be without their glory; and especially to show why the two peoples fought with each other. (De SĂŠlincourt, rev. Marincola 1996: 3)Â
4. David Grene (Chicago University Press, 1987)
I, Herodotus of Halicarnassus, am here setting forth my history, that time may not draw the color from what man has brought into being, nor those great and wonderful deeds, manifested by both Greeks and barbarians, fail of their report, and, together with all this, the reason why they fought one another.Â
5. Robin Waterfield (Oxford World Classics, 1998)Â
Here are presented the results of the enquiry carried out by Herodotus of Halicarnassus. The purpose is to prevent the traces of human events from being erased by time, and to preserve the fame of the important and remarkable achievements produced by both Greeks and non-Greeks; among the matters covered is, in particular, the course of the hostilities between Greeks and non-Greek.Â
6. Andrea L. Purvis (The Landmark Herodotus, Pantheon Books, 2007) Herodotus of Halicarnassus here presents his research so that human events do not fade with time. May the great and wonderful deedsâsome brought forth by the Hellenes, others by the barbariansânot go unsung; as well as the causes that led them to make war on each other.Â
7. Pamela Mensch (Hackett Publishing Company, 2014)Â
Here is the showing-forth of the inquiry of Herodotus of Halicarnassus, so that neither what human beings have done might disappear in time, nor the deeds great and admirable, partly shown forth by Greeks, and partly by the barbarians, might be without fameâan inquiry that shows forth both other things and through what cause they fought against one another.

Spectral (2016)
My rating: 6/10
So this is not quite the "Ghostbusters, but as a dumb jingoistic action movie" thing the promotional material suggested, but, y'know. It basically is. Kind of fun though.

lovers II Keira Walsh x Williamson!Reader
masterlist I word count: 2468
a/n: Hi, we realized that it's our 100th oneshot which sounds absolutely wild, so enjoy. For the readers who wait for the Emily Fox fanfic it will come out next. <3
You were in love with Ibiza.
In love with the beaches and the sunshine, the palm trees and the blue of the ocean.
You were in love with the clubs and bars, your sister and her friends took you to.
But above all, you were in love with your sisterâs best friend.
The afternoon sun painted the hotel room in soft golden light as you slipped into a short dress. You could still feel the salty air and the sun from earlier that day on your skin as you began applying mascara to your eyelashes. Except for a bit of hunger, you felt fully content.
âReady for dinner? You look gorgeous by the way.â, Keiras voice said from behind you.
You hadnât noticed her coming in.
You flinched, almost stabbing yourself in the eye with the mascara wand.
Keira smiled apologetically at your reflection in the mirror.
You watched as her gaze started to travel down your body, taking in every curve in your tight-fitting dress.
With a smile you turned towards her and bridged the gap between the two of you.
âAre you kidding? Look at you⌠Your curls are so pretty and soft.â, you whispered, gently running her fingers through her reddish brown hair.
You loved the way the salt water had restored Keiras natural hair texture.
âMy curls? I just didnât straighten my hair.â, she laughed.
Her cheeks flushed slightly, barely visible through the light sunburn on her skin.
Completely enamoured, you beamed at her: âI love it.â
You were about to lean forward to kiss her when someone cleared their throat behind you.
Your heart stopped while you pulled apart. You ran through possible explanations for this situation in your head, just in case you would turn around to face your sister.
Instead, Alex Scott watched the two of you with a knowing grin.
âYou do? Oh hi, Alex.â, Keira greeted the former football player.
âLittle Williamson is right though. She could have done something with fashion butâŚâ, Alex said without finishing her thought.
You rolled your eyes, she had always tried to convince you to work in the fashion industry but you wouldnât trade your job as an English teacher in Barcelona for anything in the world.
âShe chose to teach people English in Spain and honestly, it was the best decision ever.â, you finished for Alex.
Keira laughed: âI agree with that.â
Leah appeared next to Alex in the doorway. Subconsciously, you tried to put more distance between yourself and Keira.
âOf course, you do, Kei. Because that way you can talk to someone in your mother tongue almost every day. How did the Catalan interview go again?â, your sister teased.
Her best friend released a tired groan: âDonât remind me.â
Alex changed the subject, pointing with her thumb over her shoulder: âNow that everyoneâs dressed up, letâs get some dinner in before we go clubbing.â
âSounds like a good idea.â, you agreed in a good mood, the sea air made you hungry.
At the restaurant Keira studied the menu thoroughly before looking at you with an innocent smile on her lips.
âEverything here sounds so good, do you want to share?â, she asked.
âSure.â, you replied happily. Above your heads the fairy lights were switched on and you could hear the waves crashing on to the shore in the background.
The romantic atmosphere was quickly disturbed by your older sister.
âExcuse me? I thought youâd share with me!â, she pouted, sending glances at the Barca player which could kill.
âWhat about your girlfriend? Doesnât she want to share with you?â, Keira asked in return, cheeks flushed.
âYes, Lee, no need to be that dramatic about it.â, Alex Greenwood intervened laughing.
âIâm not dramatic.â, Leah countered smirking.
âThatâs just how sheâs.â, you explained cheekily.
âWhy donât we order food for the table so we can all share?â, your girlfriend suggested hoping this would calm the Blonde Arsenal defender down.
âYes, thatâs perfect. Iâm in.â, the two Alexâs declared grinning.
âSame, you too, Leah?â, you turned around to investigate your sisterâs face, waiting for her reaction.
âSure.â, she nodded, sounding much calmer already.
âWhat about a first round of cocktails?â, Jess wanted to know.
âPlease.â, Leah answered.
A few minutes later the drinks arrived at your table, beaming you toasted with her. âCheers.â
âCheers.â, she responded grinning. Â
The sweetness and the alcohol sparked the desire in you to touch your loverâs curly hair again.
âStop it.â, Keira demanded giggling.
âIâm not doing anything.â, you remarked in a not guilty tone.
âYes, youâre. Stop it.â, she bit her lip nervously.
âFine.â, you sighed defeated, quickly finishing your cocktail.
After the last sip you stood up smiling delighted at the other girls. âGirls, are we ready for the club now?â
âLetâs go.â, Alex Greenwood chirmed.
The sun was long gone now, the moon and the stars shown brightly as you and your sister former and current teammates joined the Ibizan night life.
Something your sister and you both shared was the passion for music. While Leah preferred to sing you would take every chance you could get to dance. Before Keira your first love has been rhythm and beats.
âCome on, Kei.â, Alex nudged the red-haired woman who admired you from the distance.
âI donât dance. Iâm here for the drinks.â, she waved the sports journalist off.
âBut I do. Come on, Alex.â, Leah remarked cheerfully.
âComing.â, Alex laughed and let the defender pull her into the direction of the dance floor.
The other Alex jumped up as well, following closely behind: âHey, wait for me.â
You caught Keiras eye from across the room and danced your way over to her. You were not ready to stop yet but you also didnât want to leave her alone.
Keira reached for your wrist with a laugh: âStop twirling around, y/n.â
âWhy?â, you asked, spinning out of her grasp.
âJust because.â
You stopped for a moment, studying her face. There was something serious and pleading in her eyes that you didnât understand. You only wanted to continue dancing with your friends. âKeiraâŚâ
You interrupted yourself, taking in a sharp breath in surprise as two hands laid on your hips and spun you around.
A man in his mid-thirties and clearly drunk grinned at you. His gaze traveled down to your neckline while he asked you something that your brain didnât seem to comprehend. Apparently he wanted you to dance with him but everything about him made clear that he had other things in mind than just dancing.
You froze in place, not sure if you felt disgusted or disgusting.
Just when you were about to say something, your sister squeezed between him and you and pushed him back: âSorry, no. Thatâs my sister!â
âAnd sheâs already taken.â, Keira added. You hadnât noticed that Keira had gotten up from her seat as well.
Leahs head whipped towards her best friend: âWhat?â
âUhmâŚâ, you mumbled as you watched the man retreat with his hands raised in surrender.
You desperately tried to find a good reason to change the subject but you just couldnât come up with one.
âWho is it, y/n? One of your colleagues or one of the Barca girlies?â, Leah asked, her voice tinted with anger.
âItâsâŚuhmâŚâ, you started and forced yourself not to look at Keira. Lying would be so easy right now. But did you actually want to keep hiding?
Your sister got impatient: âJust tell me.â
âKeira.â, was all you could get out and prayed that you made the right choice.
The two best friends looked at each other. Keira nodded slowly: âItâs me.â
âWait, you?! When? How? Sheâs my little sister!â Leahs eyebrows furrowed in anger.
Keira shrugged, trying to keep her voice calm: âIn Barcelona⌠it just happened.â
Your sister turned towards you with her jaw set: âWeâll talk about this tomorrow morning!â
She stormed off without waiting for an answer and you quietly wondered where she would go.
Keira and you ended the night there and went back to your hotel room.
You walked out on the balcony overlooking the ocean, Keira followed right behind you.
âSheâs really mad.â, you said nervously into the night sky.
The midfielder wrapped her arms around you and rolled her eyes: âShe canât be mad about this.â
You knew she had a point.
âNo, Lee is more upset about the fact that we didnât tell her.â
âStill. I can talk with her if you want me to.â, Keira offered while you kept watching the waves come and go which was scarily similar to your older sisterâs temper. Deep down you knew she would eventually calm down.
âNo, Iâll do it, itâs fine.â, you assured the Barcelona player before kissing her temple softly.
For a moment she closed her eyes under your touch. âSheâll be fine.â, the midfielder whispered in a convinced tone as her lips touched yours in a heartfelt kiss.
âWhat was the kiss for?â, you raised an eyebrow at her curiously.
âFor good luck.â, Keira replied smirking.
âBut she said tomorrow so maybe we could just go inside and..â, you begun rambling.
âYou think thatâs a good idea?â, your girlfriend interrupted you with a doubtful look on her face.
âNo, Iâll do it now.â, you sighed, knowing fully well that some things shouldnât be put on hold. Although youâd miss the comforting hug of the midfielder who pretended to hate them but always made an exception for you.
Cautiously you stood at the entry of the hotel room your sister and her girlfriend were staying in. âLee, can we chat outside?â
Without a word the older blonde got up and put on her shoes, signalling that she was ready to talk to you outside.
For a while the two of you walked silently on the sand which felt still warm under your naked feet.
âSo, you and Keira, huh?â, Leah broke the silence, sounding more curious than mad this time.
âYeah.â, you answered timidly.
âSince when?â the defender continued asking.
âWe got closer when she came to Barcelona.â, you confessed.
âThat was forever ago.â, she noted slightly hurt by your reply.
âYes, but we just started dating a few months ago.â, you added quickly. This much was true. Undoubtedly, you always had a soft spot for your sisterâs best friend. The more time you two spend together, the more it became obvious that there was more than just friendship.
âAnd you didnât tell me.â, Leah swallowed hard through that realization.
âYou didnât ask me.â, you reminded her.
âIf youâre dating my best friend? How was I supposed to know.â, she retorted.
âNo, in general, itâs mostly about you when you call me.â, you countered.
âI didnât realize that. Iâm sorry. But I thought youâd tell me such things.â, the defender apologized, her skin despite the tan turned pale.
âItâs okay. I guess we werenât great sisters for each other recently.â, you admitted guiltily.
Leah nodded in reluctant agreement: âI guess we werenât.â
There was a moment of silence between the two of you, not uncomfortable but thoughtful.
âBut we could do better now.â, you said determinedly,
Your sister stopped walking. You only realized that wasnât on your side anymore after a few more steps.
You turned towards her and caught her staring at you.
âY/n?â, she asked.
âYes?â
âAre you happy?â
You smiled at her: âVery.â
âWith Kei?â
âYes.â, you confirmed again.
Leah studied your face for a moment, searching for any indication of a lie before she finally nodded once: âOkay.â
âOkay?â, you echoed with hopefulness in your voice. You didnât want to fight with your sister. You wanted her and Keira in your life.
Leah kicked up some sand with her shoe: âYes, okay. I think I can live with that.â
âGood.â, you beamed and slowly continued your walk, waiting for your sister to take her place by your side again.
You thought your talk was over when your sister suddenly spoke up again: âY/n?â
You looked at her, signalling her to continue.
âJust because you live a life outside of the public eye doesnât mean Iâm not interested in your life or Iâm not proud of you.â
Her words caught you by surprise. You frowned at her in confusion. âWait, youâre proud of me?â
âWhy do you sound so surprised? Obviously Iâm proud of you.â
You stared down at the fine sand under your feet: âSorry.â
Another break in your conversation arose. Apparently, struggling to express your emotions properly ran in your family.
âNot everyone has the bravery to go abroad for work⌠I would not.â, Leah continued.
You looked back up at her: âReally?â
She nodded slowly: âYou know how much I love home. And Arsenal. I just couldnât.â
Hearing this filled you with pride but at the same time, you had to suppress a smile because you really couldnât imagine your sister anywhere else.
âTrue, youâre such a homebody.â, you laughed.
Your sister smirked and gave you a small shrug: âSee, weâre just very different.â
âYes, but thatâs okay.â, you assured her. You could feel the tension dissolve slowly.
Leah raised an eyebrow: âI will still have to talk to Keira though.â
You let out a groan: âOh no, not the big sister talk.â
âOh yes, even for my best friend.â
âFine, but try and be nice, okay?â, you asked innocently.
âOf course.â
âThank you.â
She reached over and ruffled through your blonde hair: âAnything for my little sister.â
You tried to get revenge. You two were laughing like children while you chased her down the beach.
You never heard anything about their talk. Both Keira and Leah refused to tell you anything and stubbornly maintained their silence. You didnât care anyway. They seemed closer than ever and that was all that mattered to you.
The next days were spend at the beach, enjoying the sun and the refreshing coolness of the sea.
âNo. Iâm not going into the water.â Keira shook her head determinedly. She had spend the morning straightening her hair but to you, that was not a reason to miss out on swimming.
âCome on.â You impatiently pulled at her arm.
Leah appeared on Keiras other side, pushing her forward. âYou better go now.â
Together you barrelled towards the sea, falling over each as soon as you reached the water. The rest of your friend group burst out laughing,
Keira pushed her now wet hair back. It started to curl at the ends already.
âI hate you Williamsons!â, she laughed.
You kissed her cheek: âNo, you donât.â
âNot really, no.â, Keira admitted and pulled you towards her by your waist to kiss you.
Leah grimaced in disgust: âOkay, but you donât have to kiss in front of me.â
âStop complaining.â, you rolled your eyes.
Keira grinned at her: âYou better get used to it, Lee.â

Never Say Die² â˘Â Steph Catley
Part 2 to I Miss you and Never Say Dieš
Word count: 3,8k
On the morning of the semi finals youâre found dancing around in the common room of base camp, a spiderman mask on your face as you attempt to moonwalk.
âYeah, Harps! Shake that booty, shake it, shake it!â you exclaim to the small girl next to you whoâs decked out in the rest of the spiderman costume.
The costume was gifted to the birthday girl but she left the mask laying there as she got up to do a happy dance and you pulled it on right away, with Miniâs okay.
The now two year old is squealing excitedly as the two of you dance to the music in the background and you take her small hands into yours and fool around with the limited dance moves you know.Â
Charli is giggling at the two of you from her place on one of the beanbags, a phone in her hand recording the two of you while Kyra and Mini are close to wheezing at your moves.Â
âGo Harps, go Harps!â Charli cheers from behind the phone and you shoot her a cheeky wink as you level up your moves, though not like she can see that under your mask.
Kyra can no longer take it as she rolls off her beanbag, wheezing into the floor as your shoes squeak. You look absolutely ridiculous with your sisterâs goalkeeper shirt and your Matildas shorts on and the spiderman mask on your head. At this point even Katrina isnât trying to hold back her laughs and you eventually stop, dropping your hands to your sides as you lean your head to the side, looking at them defeatedly- more like attempting to see through the small holes on the mask.
Harper doesnât seem to care much as she continues dancing in front of you and the three can only watch on with giggles.Â
You end up reposting the video Charli has posted on her own story, wishing the mini Mini a happy 2nd birthday. By the time the rest of your teammates make it down to have their breakfasts youâve already tired out the toddler and the two of you lay on the carpet at the back of the cafeteria.
Harper has crawled on top of you and her head is tucked under your chin with her small hands gripping your shirt. It isnât only Katrinaâs heart that melts at the sight but also Stephâs who smiles dreamily, momentarily forgetting about the toast on her plate.Â
Kyra throws herself onto the ground next to you and then tucks herself into your side, your best friend laughing as you groan at the impact. The dreamy look is immediately wiped off Stephâs face as she stares on, trying to be subtle about the way she glares when Kyraâs nose brushes against your cheek. Just a moment later the three of you are joined by a blonde and Charli grins at Harper on top of you, the defender placing her head on your shoulder.Â
âIâve never seen you look jealous beforeâ Emily breaks her out of her staring and her voice makes the brunette jump.
âI am not jealousâ Steph is met with raised eyebrows, clearly Eve wasnât buying a word she said.
âIâve got nothing to be jealous of. Sheâs always been very close with them.â It sounds more like sheâs telling herself and the blonde next to her chuckles at her tone.
âExactly. And at the end of the day, sheâs yoursâ Emily shrugs as Steph smiles, truthfully not worried about the situation at all. Before she gets to open her mouth a voice cuts in from the other end of the table, the goalkeeperâs voice loud and clear.
âAre you two talking about my sister?â
âWhat, no!â
Heavy breaths leave your mouth as you pant and you lean over with your hands on your knees to get more oxygen into your lungs. You had just sprinted the length of the field but before you could align yourself with the ball, it had been cleared by Alex Greenwood.Â
Sam pats you on the back as the two of you make your way back to your side and you give her a grateful look.Â
It was only the 50th minute of the game and with Ella Tooneâs goal in the first half, England were currently leading. Both teams are very strong and although your legs are still somewhat sore from the quarter finals, you wanted to be ready for your team.
The Matildas have had their chances with Caitlin and Mary making amazing crosses but neither you or Sam have been very successful with your attempts, only two on target. But you knew this would never be easy, it was a world cup semi-final after all, the Matildasâ first one at that.Â
You know Sam has it in her to turn the tables and clearly the fans want to see her world class skills as well. Thereâs a split second when you get the ball passed to you that you notice the space the English have left for you and you dribble the ball just closer to the halfway line.
You know your team has been relying too much on Sam in this game but sheâs your best chance and frankly, the only one you see near you as you move away from Alex Greenwood.
Two defenders follow you close by and it gives Sam the opportunity to break free from her own defenders. You send the ball right in front of her and she takes off with it. When she gets just close enough she looks up at Mary Earpsâ positioning one last time before the ball sails past Bright and Carter, Greenwood already hot on her trails.Â
The fans celebrate as it goes above Maryâs hand and into the goal, Sam is running around and she cups her ear, shouting something about how the Tillies never give up and then sheâs brought into a group celebration.
âThere you go Sammy!â
The score is 1-1 at the 63â minute and it is clear both teams are starving for a goal to give them the lead, perhaps the game winning goal.
Englandâs defense is crazy good and it takes one mistake from your team to give them the lead. Lauren Hemp had gotten herself on the ball and you knew how fast she was. You kept up with her for a good while but it wasnât enough for you to actually get the ball away from her. When you see Ellie coming in hot from the corner of your eye you suddenly slow down and let her take over. The lack of your presence confuses Lauren who visibly stutters in her movements and Ellie attacks in this moment.
She goes for the ball, jumping from Hempâs left side to the right but her feet just graze the ball and it doesnât affect Lauren one bit as she slides to push the ball through the goal line. 2-1 to England in the 71â minute.
You groan into your shirt as the English run around in celebration but you make sure to get to Ellie and pull her off the ground. The blonde is wearing a dejected look, disappointed in her miscalculated moves and you clutch her bicep as the other team calms down.
âDonât beat yourself up about it, it was a good tryâ she reluctantly nods at you and you add one last bit that has her nodding more confidently. âYouâll get her backâ
And she does. Many times. Youâre in awe of the way her and Steph seem to be connecting at the moment despite being on two different sides of the field. It is the third try England have at the goal but Ellie sweeps the ball away from Alessia before the other blonde can even think about scoring.Â
Youâre only following Tonyâs orders, just like the rest of your teammates and so nearly every time you get the ball you try to set it up for Sam, you try to make space for her and you cross it to her each time.
It is clearly exhausting her out as well, the raven haired girl getting passes from everyone, all of you waiting for her to just equalize. You knew it wasnât right to rely on her so much but you felt like time was running out and the girls were in slight panic. Your heart skipped a beat each time Sam was just a step away from scoring, each time Earps made a save.Â
You can see how frustrated your friend is and you canât blame her. Poor Sam had the whole world waiting for her to change the game. Her eyes connect with yours, theyâre upset and slightly tired eyes and your heartbeat slows just a little. She had too much pressure on her, with three defenders on her at all times it was a miracle that she was even able to move away from them and receive each cross.Â
âWe should try it from the other sideâ the two of you walk side by side as youâre given a moment to breathe, Sarina subbing in Laura Coombs for Ella Toone.Â
Sam seems to instantly understand what youâre trying to say and her face lights up just a little, more than open to any ideas that didnât all end with her facing Earps one on one and three defenders glued to her side.
âLike in training yesterday? The Thach weave or whatever?â the forward replies enthusiastically, recalling how the set piece you named after an aerial formation had worked so well in the scrimmage you played.Â
âYeah, you on the left me on the rightâ you explain and nod to her rapidly as you part ways and jog back to your position. Sam raises a thumbs up into the air and a smirk plays at your lips, your game face back on.Â
Just a few minutes after Coombsâ substitution, Kyra manages to rid the ball of her and she hands it over to Courtnee. Like every time before, she passes it to Sam and Carter is immediately on her. Millie Bright is on her way too however theyâre both utterly confused when instead of moving forward Sam goes across the pitch and to towards the other sideline.
They follow her close by though and when you run by the three, yourself making your way to where Sam was just moments ago, the English players donât realize Sam had slid the ball over to you and they follow her until she stops running. The cheeky smile on Samâs face is everything as she watches you dive down on the side of the pitch, no one in sight, all of them having been focused on her and the rest of the England players were only trying to catch up to you.Â
You force Mary off her line and you fake a shot as she gets closer. She drops to the floor to deflect it but the ball never comes and she canât do anything as you instead chip it over her and into the goal. Youâre buzzing as you jump into Samâs arms and the girls in the dugout are up on their feet and celebrating your equalizer.Â
âI fucking told you!â Sam is beyond ecstatic and you bask in her happiness for a moment as the pair of you get praised by your teammates. 2-2 in the 85â minute of the match and you were close to the end. You could only pray that your team would manage to pull off another goal.
Nothing changes. Once again Sam is left alone at the front, yourself having to fall back a little and play a defensive role as well and your midfield are struggling with creating something. England are constantly attacking and you have subconsciously drifted back a bit to help out your defensive line which meant you were hopping around between Ellie and Emily, trying to block the opposition as much as possible.
Tension is rising and youâre all getting more aggressive though careful enough to not get carded. England arenât playing nice either because they have started to be more pushy, shoving Caitlin and Sam any time theyâre close. In the 90+3 minutes the match is called to an end and extra time is announced. As long as we donât go into penalties, you thought, knowing how good England were at that.
You hang back a little, walking slower as you join the girls near Tony and take a drink. You squeeze yourself in under Alannaâs arm and listen to what the coach has to say.
Tony however, doesnât change much in terms of tactics and he nods towards Sam, telling her sheâs been doing good and to continue the way she has and that heâs counting on her. Your captain sighs heavily as she drops her head. It has been an exhausting match and you all have been relying almost solely on her, all the while she had defenders targeting her every second.Â
Clapping each other on the back, you go back out onto the battlefield and squareup your shoulders, ready to fight.
Tonyâs tactics arenât doing good. England keep good possession of the ball and although Steph and Emily as well as Alex do a good job at chasing them down, the Matildas are struggling to make a move.Â
Sam has been caged between Bright and Carter, Bronze hanging close by just in case but the Aussie captain is constantly sandwiched between them.Â
By whatever miracle, the first half of extra time goes by relatively eventless.Â
You take Kyra under your arm as you make a team huddle, Tony scratching his head in thought.Â
Looking around at your teammates' exhausted faces, you feel a sense of disappointment shoot through your body, disappointed that you guys havenât been able to change the scoreline.Â
You usually wouldnât butt into the coaches and captainâs tactical talks but the sudden rush of blood in your fingertips, the beads of sweat running down your forehead and the deep breaths let out from the girls around you prompts you to speak up.
You clear your throat, more in thought than asking for attention but Tony doesnât hesitate to look towards you hopefully and you straighten up as you begin.
âI know itâs not looking too good for us right now and weâre all in our heads, but it's real simple. You got 15 more mins and that's it. And most of you have been playing this game for more than ten years. You got 15 more mins and that's it. After that we are going to the final and we won't leave until we win this world cup.â you start, making sure to hold eye contact with each and every one of your teammates, whether they still had influence on the game or they were subbed off and would most likely remain on the bench.
Your gaze connects with Samâs again and you halt your speech for a moment.Â
âI donât care what we do as long as we winâ itâs spoken with much determination from her and her eyes have a seemingly livelier look in them, ready for a change of tactics.
âGood. We need you in the middle, they are targeting you too much. We need the ball to go through you and theyâll be caught off guard when you don't immediately shoot. We need you to play an attacking midfielder role here. When the ball goes through you, and you pass it off to someone, they won't know what to do, theyâve got three players on you which means when you wonât have the ball theyâll basically be useless. Which then means the rest of us have 3 players less to worry about." Sam seems to be loving the idea and she enthusiastically nods along.
Youâre pleased to find the rest of your team with expressions of similar determination and when you glance at Tony he shrugs with a smile, this could work. Steph swears sheâs never felt more proud in her life and your passion for the game and for the team only made her fall deeper in love.
You add a few more points on where you think the team could improve for the following 15 minutes and then you end your speech with words so motivating, it would get anyone out of bed.
âI want you to take a moment and I want you to look each other in the eyes. I want you to put each other in your hearts forever, because forever is about to happen here in just a few minutes!â the shouts you receive are more than rewarding and your talk seems to reignite that last bit of fire left in everyoneâs soul.
âNEVER SAY DIE!âÂ
Youâre much more clinical in the second half of extra time, your defense is like the great wall of china and if that wasnât enough, your sister was impersonating a brick wall in the goal. Sam had initially gotten back into her previous position, but that was good, you wanted to fool the English.
The time is ticking and you have got four minutes left, four minutes to change the score, to turn this game around, to not go into penalties, to continue your world cup dream. Everything would break or blossom from these last few minutes.
And fool them you did.Â
Alex dives for the ball as it rolls from under Dalyâs foot and she sends it towards Kyra. With a good play between Kyra and Caitlin, the ball gets to Sam and instantly Bright and Carter start to sprint with her, once again towards the goal. And Sam goes towards the goal but then the Australian lobs the ball out to the side, confusion setting in as seemingly she just passed the ball to no one.
No one is the someone who comes running like her life depends on it. The ball hasnât even touched the ground yet and you half jump in your run, striking the ball hard, your laces connecting with it and it soars through the air.
A collective intake of breath is heard around the stadium, the Matildas fans rising to their feet in anticipation and Mary jumps after the ball.
She doesnât reach it! She doesnât reach it and it goes in just under the crossbar! 3-2 to Australia in the 117' minute.
Screaming and screeching you run towards Sam and she motions to you with a come hither motion. You understand what sheâs hinting at and the two of you run together before hitting Samâs favorite celebration in sync. The backflips make the crowd go even more insane and the girls surround the two of you in their own yells of joy.Â
âWe did it!â chants of your name makes you crumble to the ground and into Samâs and Caitlinâs arms in the overwhelming feeling and they pull you into them, yourself clinging to the brunettes as it all sets in. Australia was going to the final.Â
When youâre back on your feet a hand cups the back of your neck and pulls you into a bone crushing hug. You reciprocate it as you hold Steph close to you, the brunetteâs tears wetting your shoulder.
âIâm so proud of you, Stephy baby!Â
âThat was such a beautiful goal, puddinâ!â both are spoken at the same time and it makes the two of you laugh as you separate. The smiles on your faces are bright and you resist from intertwining your fingers with your girlfriends.
âI could literally kiss you right nowâ the defender breathes out with a chuckle and you bite your lip at the thought.
âMe tooâ but not yet, not here with the whole world watching.
You eventually find yourself making your rounds with the fans, a Bronze jersey hanging over your bare shoulder, having swapped with the England player. The two of you knew each other well from your time in Lyon and you comforted her while she expressed her joy for you.Â
Kyra barrels into you with a laugh and the two of you hug once again before Kyra presses a sloppy kiss to your cheek. Clearly your best friend was overjoyed by the teamâs win.
âYouâre being obviousâ
âSheâs practically making out with Y/Nâs cheekâ Steph huffs out, arms crossing over her chest as she watches Kyra hug your shirtless body. Caitlin and Alanna laugh next to her and she rolls her eyes at the two.
Youâre only slightly surprised when later you are cornered in the shower rooms by Steph. She immediately latches onto you and kisses you hotly, the bruising kiss taking your breath away and making your world spin as you grip onto her waist. Her hands are all over you, her mouth claiming you as hers and you push yourself more into her.
The brunette tugs on your lip gently and then she sucks on it lightly to ease the slight stinging, your breathing picks up and youâre just about to reach under her shirt when you hear a voice just outside the door.
âStephanie Catley, you better not be getting it on with my little sister in there!â Mackenzie shouts, making the girls in the changing room burst out in laughs. Steph groans and you give her an apologetic look, giving her another peck in exchange for your sisterâs behavior.Â
You almost forget about the media duties Sam and Tony have but you pay attention to the TV in the locker room as you pull on a clean shirt.
âTheyâre talking about youâ your sister takes a seat next to you and she turns up the volume so you could hear what Tony was saying.
âI like it when Y/n takes control of a situation because the outcome is always good. These players have it in them, they know they can win but sometimes they need someone to unite them, and to remind them of what they are capable of, maybe to get their heads back in the game. And Y/n is there to step up and take the leadâ Tonyâs words have you flushing as the girls cheer you on and you lean your head on Mackenzieâs shoulder.
âDo you think Y/n Arnold could be captain?â
âOh most definitely-â
âOne dayâ Sam intervenes, a good-naturedly teasing tone to remind you that sheâs captain for now, and of course Steph. You wouldnât have it any other way though.
With your hand grasped tightly in your girlfriendâs and her lips kissing your cheek, you fall into a peaceful slumber on the bus back to camp, too tired from todayâs semi final to keep your eyes open for any longer.
âI love youâ itâs whispered into your hair and you smile to yourself, leaning up slightly to kiss Steph lightly.
âI love you moreâ
And you couldnât wait to smash Spain in the finals. Australia was going to win their first world cup on home soil, and the Matildas would make sure of that.

I love women, oh how I adore women. All and every, I love them all. I love successful smart women who got fucked up by not only overachievers but mainly science assholes who couldn't handle a woman inventing anything. I love Ada Lovelace and Hedy Lamarr. I love feminists and all the women that fought for female right, that fought racists and patriarchs and homophobes and sexists, who made sure that we have the right to vote, to study and to marry whoever we want. I love the suffragettes, Mary Wollstonecraft, FrantiĹĄka PlamĂnkovĂĄ, Rosa Parks and Milada HorĂĄkovĂĄ. I love female authors who pushed through the wave of misogyny and published their own books and became famous worldwide, influencing masses of people. I love Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Mary Shelley, Sylvia Plath, Simone de Beauvoir and Margaret Atwood. I love female rulers who managed to reign over a whole country, conquer their enemies and successfully remain on the throne. I love Marie Therese, Elizabeth I, queen Victoria, Catherine the great, Elizabeth II. I love actresses and singers that popularized film and theatre and became role models to many many girls and women, who had to push through years of unfairness and constant sexualization. I love Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie. I love fictional women, from books and movies, who were either powerful or batshit insane or survived the unsurvivable or were the epitome of the devil. I love Medeia, Esther Greenwood, Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen and Tashi Duncan. Them and many much more, straight women, cis women, gay women, trans women, happy women, sad women, angry women, miserable women, emotional women, women who are a threat to men and patriarchy and are seen as crazy and insane. I love all women and everything they've accomplished, for how they inspired me.

Bug just nut megging people for fun on the pitch while the Arsenal team is torn between laughing and ushering her off the pitch
Leah and Jordan are giving her discrete high fives as they take her off
BUT also imagine the drama that would come from that ref who's name I can't remember for the life of me (Was it Emily something???) Who gave Alex Greenwood that red card in the game against Chelsea!
She would somehow start beef with a small child, creating absolute chaos on both teams
The ref trying to beef with Bug but everyone is like 'we're literally two minutes into the five minutes of injury time left. Just let her play'
