ALRIGHT, as someone who's been on film sets and stuff, NOOOOO you DO NOT have to film night scenes during the day to make them look nice. Bad day-for-night is like, SO OBVIOUS and glaring when you're looking for it. (If you're ever watching a movie and it's supposed to be night, but everything's lit real well with a blue filter, you're getting the full day-for-night experience.)

It is VERY POSSIBLE to just shoot normally at night, and light the scene properly. You can motivate it however you want (a fire, the moon, whatever) and create lighting that feels motivated and natural, without having to do day-for-night, or the technique described above, which is very cool, but also INSANELY outta reach for the average person who might wanna make a movie.

We shot a bunch of stuff at night in film school, and we definitely did not have the resources described. But we were able to make it look nice through setting up lights with blue gels to mimic moonlight, and wiggling red gels over other lights to mimic the flickering of a fire.

The above technique sounds very cool, and I'm always down for more innovations in film-making. But it's not necessary to make things look good. That just requires good ole elbow grease, and a little bit of time.

They DO have those things though! The orange bar at the front is the same height (or lower, maybe) as the bridge to warn you that you're overheight, and last year they went to ENORMOUS effort to raise the bridge by I believe 8 inches, so there would be more clearance (the bridge is a train-tressle, so it really was enormous effort). And YET. And yet. People persist in can-opening their vans.

was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. It is funny to me that Maul like, within the context of the real world looks like an obvious villain. The most obvious. He's a satanic archetype! He's modeled after The Devil! Literally red skin and horns!

And yet within Star Wars he just looks like a guy. Like Nightbrothers just look like that. Definitely unusual but most people probably just see a Zabrak with more tattoos than normal.
