Halloween Film Frightstival Day 16: Elvira’s Haunted Hills (2001)
Tumblr media
Okay I had to watch the Elvira sequel (for the first time, I’ve never actually seen it before!)
The Shining reference in the first five minutes, okay I get the vibe. A little more spoofy than campy this time around?
It took me a bit to get into it (and to get it), but once I realized it was supposed to be pure spoof and wholly self aware, it all made so much more sense. They dropped Elvira at her raunchiest straight into a stereotype of a midcentury horror with all the tropes and idiosyncrasies
I loved the bad voiceover for Adrian and in reading about the film it turns out the hot actor they hired was Romanian and didn’t speak English so they turned that into the joke which is exactly how a comedy should take setbacks in stride (I am also shamelessly pro sexy stablehand characters, so that’s a plus for me)
If you were a 90s/00s kid, you’ll also get slapped in the face with actors from your childhood. Mrs Benson is married to Phineas and Ferb’s dad
It’s a bit reminiscent of Monty Python, Clue, and one of my favorite films from my childhood that no one else has ever heard of The Private Eyes. It’s not exactly like any of those but it feels a little like them all. Although after an accidental wikipedia binge, I think the reason it feels like The Private Eyes is because Mistress of the Dark and Private Eyes were both distributed by New World Pictures which was also founded by Roger Corman whose Poe adaptations are the main target of Haunted Hill’s spoofs, so there’s a genetic vibe going on there I think
Ending thoughts: the shaky cam made me nauseous so I do not recommend watching the last few minutes if you’re prone to motion sickness like I am, the Titanic reference was not subtle and was hilarious, and I sincerely appreciate how Elvira’s boobs save the day every time
I also only just now realized that the title is a reference to House on Haunted Hill (a Vincent Price film, duh, I’m dumb) and also possibly a boob joke
Overall I enjoyed it – once I figured it out. I still don’t love it nearly as much as the first one and they feel like pretty much standalone films so it doesn’t really impact or add anything the original, but it’s good so long as you understand that what you’re getting into is a different vibe than the other movie

Watching Elvira’s Haunted Hills and even though it’s not as good as Mistress of The Dark and obviously had a lower budget, I love Elvira’s little cabaret song. I’m enjoying it. And it looked like Cassandra is having a lot of fun.

Okay, long story short, the reasons I liked Elvira's Haunted Hills despite my better judgement:
The constant riffs on the Price/Corman/Poe films
Richard O'Brien
It actually being kind of a real horror movie?
But most importantly, the opening titles claiming it was set in "Carpathia, 1851"
