Elrond observes a storm on the horizon, just beyond the boundaries of Imladris, while he waits for news of Frodo and the Ring.

Written for @writersmonth 2024 day 27, 'lightning | office'.

This is for the lovely @erathene, who prompted me "Elrond sees a storm rolling in towards Imladris from the window to his study. What's on his mind? Storms are not often seen in the last homely house, is this an innocent phenomenon or an omen of something to come? You decide! 😉"; I found myself setting it in the week or ten days when Glorfindel and, presumably, the twins are out looking for Aragorn and the Hobbits, and it can be read as happening during the distraction or the force which is also set around that time, given that pretty much everything I write in canon'verse tends to take place in the same 'verse. Also, Celebrían kind of wanted to chime in, but I'm not entirely certain she's really there.

A while ago I gave myself a drawing prompt: What if Elrond was the one who found and rescued Celebrían?

when elrond finally sailed i like to think that he saw celebrían waiting for him on the shore and leapt from the boat, splashing through the waves until he could run to her, unable to bear even another moment apart.

The Recovery

I can imagine that Elrond would have barely left Celebrían’s bedside whilst she was recovering and I can’t be convinced otherwise.

I have conflicting feelings about whether Elladan and Elrohir continue to meet with Arwen after she's made the choice to become mortal. On the one hand, it may be easier and less painful for them all not to keep in touch, knowing time will run out eventually. On the other hand, they may want to be a part of her life as much as they can, and take with them as many memories of their sister as possible. 

If it's the latter case, then I imagine Arwen writing letters or journals over the years, recording her mortal life, her family with Aragorn, the friends she meets and loses, her joys and griefs, and everything she and him do to rebuild the world. But towards the end of her life - or when the twins sail - she writes a final entry and gives all that she wrote to her brothers, so that they may carry the record of her life to the Undying Lands and to their parents. 

Celebrían reads it all in one go. She's hungry for the words of her daughter, to learn about the life she doesn't get to witness first hand, and the grandchildren she will never meet. She feels bittersweet. She already lost Arwen long ago, and when she sailed she knew there was a chance she would not see her children again, them being Half-elven and having the opportunity to choose a mortal life. Celebrían has made peace with so much trauma and her own choice to leave Middle-earth, and she accepts the loss, though she also mourns it deeply. 

It is not the same with Elrond. He reads Arwen's journal extremely slowly, just one entry once in a decade, or in a century. He savours every word. But the closer he gets to the final entry, the longer the gaps in his reading become. For as long as there are new entries to be read and things to be learned, Arwen is still alive. Once he reads the final lines, the voice of his daughter will be silenced forever.

I would love anything with Elrond and Celebrian please. I have a soft spot for m/f ships where one or both of them isn’t straight and still celebrating pride (for totally unsubtle personal reasons). If this is too vague or it isn’t something you want to draw I absolutely understand, but like I said, your art is incredible and I thought I should be brave and ask!

rop is missing out on a lot of comedic potential by not making elrond and galadriel be inlaws. like if celebrían existed in the show and was married to elrond their beef could stem from some domestic stuff that does not matter at all a la celebrían and galadriel thinking that elrond does some chore slightly wrong or elrond disliking a meal galadriel once served him. their beef could be funny
