There are also dolls of G(a)linda and Elphaba (she's my favorite of them all although I do have Ozdust Ballroom Elphaba) in their Shiz University outfits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the upcoming Wicked movie, Mattel have released a variety of Wicked themed dolls. Technically, these aren't Barbies. They are Mattel Wicked Fashion Dolls with Removable Fashions & Accessories. But to most people, who are not interested in the ins and outs of what specifically is or is not part of the Barbie line, they are Wicked Barbies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Specifically, at the moment there are three dolls each of Elphaba and Galinda: two representing them at different points in the film, and one each of them singing. The Galinda features clips from "Popular" and Elphaba sings "Defying Gravity".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The line also features one representation of Nessarose, including her wheelchair.
Tumblr media
This isn't the first time that Mattel have done dolls themed around Wicked however: there actually are a pair of Barbies representing Glinda and Elphaba, as tie-ins for the stage musical.
Tumblr media
Not to mention a variety of dolls over the years representing characters from Wizard of Oz, including Glinda and The Wicked Witch of the West.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, you may notice those above aren't a matched set. This is because there have been many, many different versions of these Wizard of Oz characters.
In fact, one of these releases also contained a representation of the Wicked Witch of the East.
Tumblr media
Which I find pretty cool.
I assume that, depending on the success of the film(s), we may see a variety of other tie-in characters. I kind of want to see Morrible as a doll.

Costume Design in Wicked
So, I just watched Wicked for the third time since it’s available on Amazon now and goodness, do I love this movie. There are so many small details that you inly really start appreciating on the second or third watch, so I wanna talk about one of the things that caught my eye, already on the second watch, but even more so on this one. The costume design.
The costume design of this movie is, at least in my opinion, glorious. And by that I mean how certain characters stand out from the crowd through their clothes. If you were to look at a mass of people from Shiz, you’d know directly who the main cast is and who the supporting characters are.
The whole school follows a specific dress code: grey trousers (sometimes with a skirt on the side), light blue shirt and a matte, dark cyan-blue jacket on top. And while these parts get styled differently, trousers exchanged for skirts and similar changes being made, we, the audience, can easily tell by this who background characters are.
If we now take a look at side characters, it is clear that, while they are in fact similar to background characters, clothes, they are still distinctive differences. G(a)linda’s friend Pfannee wears, instead of the usual matte jacket, a (presumably) velvet one, giving him a shinier look without pulling too much of the audiences attention to it. Plus he wears extremely fancy glasses with a very intricate design, much more notable here is their shape tho, which is rectangular, something that I didn’t spot on any other character at Shiz, even tho there are at least three background characters who also wear glasses, all of which are round.
Glinda’s other friend, Shenshen, has a uniform that is exclusively grey, except for a few pink stripes.
Glinda is often around those two and Shenshen, lacking a lot pf colour in her uniform let’s Glinda pop out, while she at the same time shows how she belongs to her squad through the pink stripes, something that Pfannee does, in my opinion, too, even if he does it in a slightly different way and by being a bit more flashy, just like Glinda.
Nessa, Elphaba’s sister, also has a few differences in her daily attire in comparison to that of her classmates, the most prominent being her wearing a dress during the ‘Dancing through Life’ scene at Shiz, as well as the clothes she arrives in. What is interesting here is how her jacket is the only one that is entirely closed, this could either be because her overprotective father didn’t want her to catch a cold, or could also symbolise how she doesn’t require any help and refuses that, closing her off, instead of being open and comfortable, a change which we can clearly see later in the movie, during the scenes where she wears a dress. There she seems much more comfortable and open with her clothes being in turn more open, while no one tries to constantly help her and looks excessively after her wellbeing.
Let’s move on to Prince Fiyero, most of the time he wears, what I think is a dark royal blue, which would be a nod to his heritage, on top of that he is also, far as I could tell, the only student who has golden ornaments as part of his general attire. Even in his actual school outfit which he wears during the lion cub scene, we can see a clear distinction from other students through his light beige trousers and short which has a lighter blue colour than those of the other students and matches with the shirt colour Elphaba wears in the same scene, showing their connection and the bonding that happens there. On another note, his usual dark blue clothing neither matches specifically Elphaba nor Glinda, however the blue colour is in fact roughly in a triadic colour scheme with Elphaba’s skin colour and, if lighter, also with Glinda’s overall pink wardrobe.
Finally onto Elphaba and Glinda. The colours of their clothes being black and pink and, except for a few accents in other designs, being specific to them. When looking at a crowd from Shiz, those are the two that you’d notice first. They never wear actual school uniform and are as distinctive from the rest of the school as light and dark.
That is all I can think of so far, but if I missed something or got something wrong, please tell me
Anyway, thanks for listening to my ted talk ^^

I just realized something. Did Fiyero get all dolled up to see Elphaba off before she meets the wizard?
Tumblr media
He was wearing the same suit he has on when he first makes an appearance at Shiz.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It likely has some significance to his home country like a royal or official military uniform. The point is, it’s the kind of outfit you wear when trying to make a good impression or doing something very important.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And homeboy made sure to put it back on to see his girl off for her adventure 😍. That along with bringing her favorite flower 🌺 proves intention. He was ready that day.
#he planned every bit of this out #probably rehearsed in front of the mirror #if only g(a)linda weren’t there #so many words left unsaid

i was casually thinking about fiyero's costumes and how he went from musical red to movie blue bc fiyero is associated w blue in the books, and then i thought: why give the dancing-through-life-flirty-i-dont-really-care-but-i-do guy a full uniform suit when he arrives at school versus in the musical he's just wearing rolled up sleeves and a vest? its a reflection of his vulnerability. ofc its a well-known very much used symbol of vulnerability but still one nonetheless.
1) first outfit change: when movie fiyero meets elphaba, he's wearing the blue vest and the white sleeved shirt, the coat isnt in sight. when he's alone he allows some honesty/truth to himself, hence the uncovered sleeves. and when he does interact w elphaba, the exchange is quick fire yet subtly genuine (as much as one can get from meeting someone for the first time) not from his rehearsed lines as he does when he meets glinda for the first time (a crowd he knows how to charm, act around, fall into line with).
2) 2nd outfit change: arrives at shiz in full garment uniform wear, coat, vest, everything. he's fully prepared to play the role he's been uptaking: rich vinkun playboy prince looking to have a good time. the glimpse we had when he met elphaba is gone, no more trying to banter, moreso rehearsed flirting both glinda and fiyero know well. no one gets to see a crack in that armor.
3) 3rd outfit change: his shiz coat is open and we see his white garment underneath, a hint that yes, he's loosening up at shiz, but also matches the disagreeing expressions when dr. dillamond is taken away and the cub is kept in a cage. it's a bit of the genuine caring fiyero coming thru, who feels a bit of injustice esp bc his friend is a horse.
4) 4th outfit change: the coat is taken off and we get fiyero at his most vulnerable so far. his sleeves are rolled up as opposed to the first outfit with billowing sleeves to his wrists. and here is the most vulnerable scene between him and elphaba bc she saw right through his existentialism in dancing through life (could argue she saw a bit of him when she met him first bc she had a small smirk). he's laid completely bare and like the scene went, he had no clue how to deal w it.
5) 5th outfit change: at the train station, hes back in full uniform, bc that vulnerable moment shocked him and shook his foundations of his image/front. he maybe didnt know he had the capacity for that vulnerability until it happened and thats why hes so off kilter and shaken, starting to rethink his everything bc of elphaba. that vulnerability now persists through that uniform, his self-proclaimed image he's built up between countless schools and several dates etc. could be said that crack in the armor is visibly represented through the flower he gives to her bc it's tucked in his collar first VERSUS the musical when he runs up w a bouquet already in hand.
ALL IN ALL the move has the opportunity to tell REALLY AMAZING STORIES through the clothes/fashion, and they've really stepped up to the challenge and are making the most of it AHDJDJS so good + itches my brain
i didnt add in the dance uniform bc i forgot lmao but that plus the uniform he wears in thank goodness are also more decked out than the other stuff he wears, the cpatain uniform WAY more decorated and thats when he hides the most (dance scene he is fully in his element, he can hide safely in that playboy persona). cant wait to see all of that disappear in as long as youre mine HAHDJDJSS

Hey!! Can I submit a Fiyero x fem!reader request where reader has a unique/different sense of style than most students at Shiz do and she’s lowkey kinda self-conscious about it since she’s new and has been judged by people before at her previous school. Galinda, noticing this though, thinks it would be a good idea to help her by taking her under her wing and “Galinda-fying” her. Reader tries to take this in stride, but honestly isn’t sure if it’s working😂 that is, until Fiyero notices reader’s struggles and tries to reassure her that she doesn’t need to do all of “that.” Reader is slightly touched by that sentiment, but reveals the real reason why she’s doing all of this in the first place. Cue in soft Fiyero, they share a lovely, sweet moment + Fiyero being his usual charming self at the end🤭😉
cw: insecurity, hurt/comfort
The second you showed up to Shiz, you knew that you were different from the others. Your style was very unique and people didn’t seem to care for that. You could see the way they would look at you when walking to class, the way you’d try to jazz up your uniform to diversify it, making it not look like everyone else’s.
Fiyero liked that about you. He liked how you were yourself and didn’t care what anybody else thought. He was always flirty with you but not in the way he was with everyone else. He genuinely liked you and was starting to wonder when you’d get the hint that he wanted to go out with you.
Glinda also noticed the attraction between the two of you and didn’t know why she felt the need to help you. She could see what was underneath all of your insecurity, how brightly you shined, and she wanted to make it come through. And she could with a little makeover.
To her surprise, it wasn’t hard to get you to show up to her suite. She told you the truth: that she wanted to give you a makeover, and for some reason, you had agreed. Neither of you knew exactly why, but Glinda wasn’t going to question it. She was just going to take what she was given and roll with it.
Okay, maybe you knew why you were doing it. You’d never tell anyone, but you were doing it to catch Fiyero’s attention. You knew it was silly to change your appearance just to catch someone’s attention, but you didn’t know what else to do. He was right there, just out of reach and being yourself clearly wasn’t working.
What you clearly weren’t getting was that you already had him. He had asked you out multiple times and you had just been so oblivious to it, telling him that you had other things to do. Eventually he got the hint and tried his best to move on even though it wasn’t going to be easy.
“You’re here,” Glinda said as she opened the door. Her eyes were wide in shock, but she quickly shook it off, a bright smile on her face as she pulled you into the room with a lot of force.
“This is going to be so much fun!” She gushed. “Take a seat and we’ll get started.”
Glinda closed the door behind her then made her way over to her vanity where you were sitting. She rested her hands on your shoulders and bent down so that you could also see her in the reflection of her mirror. She smiled at you through it before giving your shoulders a squeeze, standing back up, turning you to face her.
She then pulled something from her bed, opening it to reveal more makeup than you'd ever seen your life. You watched in amazement as dipped a brush into a pretty pink blush before tapping it on your cheeks, nodding to herself once she had put on enough.
She continued to do your makeup as she made conversation with you, genuinely curious about your life before arriving at Shiz. And you told her everything, wondering why you had previously disliked her when she was just trying to be nice to you. Maybe it was because of what you had heard about what had gone on between her and Elphaba.
But she was sweet, and you really didn't care what her motive was for helping you. At least she was helping. And with her help, you were finally going to get Fiyero and the two of you would live happily ever after. Well, you hoped you would.
"What do you think?" She asked as she turned you around to face the mirror. You hardly recognized yourself and you supposed that was the point. The makeup look Glinda had done on you had been nothing like what you had usually done. It was glowy and pink and you didn't want to admit how much you liked it.
"I look-" you cut yourself off, unsure what to say. You moved your head this way and that, captivated by the way the makeup looked on you, wondering if there was a way you could replicate it once you had taken it off for the night.
"Amazing, right?" She asked and you nodded in agreement, deciding that word was good enough to describe what you look like. Afterwards, she gave you some clothes you could borrow and even went as far as accompanying you to class the next day so you'd feel more comfortable about your transformation.
The two of you walked throughout the school arm in arm, your heads held high in your pink and blue uniforms, everyone turning their heads to get a good look at you. Especially Fiyero. Seeing you dressed like that caught him off guard. You were like a clone of Glinda and he didn't like that. He liked you better as yourself and wondered what had inspired you to go through such a transformation.
You were vulnerable and Fiyero thought Glinda had taken advantage of that. She just wanted someone she could use, a minion, and that made him feel sick. He wanted to say something to you but didn't feel like it was his place even though the two of you were friends.
So he watched from afar, distancing himself from you because he was afraid that he would blurt out his real feelings if he got too close. That was the thing about you. You were always able to disarm him, able to make him behave like himself, not the persona he was always putting on for everyone else.
He didn’t like seeing you like that, your personality and mannerisms slowly morphing into Glinda’s right before his eyes and it seemed like no one else cared. Well, that was because no one else loved you the way he did. He loved you. That was quickly becoming more clear as he watched the little things about you that he loved slowly fade away the more time you spent with Glinda.
And the thing was, Glinda was never helping you with malicious intent. She just wanted to help you come out of your shell. She just wanted to help you see your full potential the way she did. And giving you the makeover wasn’t to change you completely, but more just show you that you could be way more that you were. To give you some more confidence than you already had.
You were walking back to your suite after classes and saw Fiyero talking to one of his many friends out of the corner of your eye. You had noticed that he had been distancing himself from you and you wanted to know why, to get to the bottom of it. You wanted to know what you had done.
You marched over to him, anger taking over your features as you did so. Fiyero could see you hurrying towards him and wanted to run away like usual, but you seemed to have intention so he stayed there, ready for whatever punishment you were about to give him since he thought he deserved it.
But you only got a few feet before your ankle twisted, sending you to the floor, your books scattering across it as you did so. Before he could think about what he was doing, Fiyero rushed to you, resting his hand on your back as he looked at you, worry written all over his face.
“Are you okay?” He asked and you nodded before turning away, wiping away the tears that were trailing down your cheeks.
“I’m fine, Fiyero,” you told him as you quickly got up from the floor, dusting yourself off. You went to reach for your books, but he had already gotten them into a stack, holding them out to you.
“Your knee’s all scratched up,” he told you and you looked down to see that he was right, blood trickling down your leg from the wound.
“Please let me patch you up.”
“Fine,” you rolled your eyes and Fiyero was quick to scoop you up into his arms before carrying you to his suite.
The two of you were quiet the entire way there, even as he sat you down on his bed. You watched him rifle through his belongings before producing a first aid kit.
You didn’t know why he was helping you when he seemed so upset with you, but you weren’t going to deny it. Anything to be close to him, anything to get him to speak to you again.
You didn’t realize how much you missed him until he was right there within reach. And now you wanted to pull him into your arms and never let him.
He sat on the bed and wordlessly put your leg into his lap, opening up an alcohol wipe and getting rid of all of the blood and anything else that could have gotten into your wound.
“You know, you wouldn’t have fallen if you hadn’t worn those ridiculous shoes,” he grumbled as he put some antibacterial ointment on the wound before covering it with a bandaid.
This was the first time Fiyero had spoken to you like that so it caught you off guard. Now it all made sense, why he had been distancing himself from you. You wished he had just been honest with you instead of ignoring you.
“If you don’t like the way I look then just say that,” you snapped and he pushed your leg off of his lap. He stood up from the bed stood in front of you, bending down so you could see his face.
“I don’t like the way you look.” His words sounded like poison, stinging you in every way possible. You knew it was true, but hearing the words come from his mouth hurt even worse.
His face then softened as he knelt in front of you, taking your hands. He looked apologetic and he was quick to wipe away the tears that were now streaming down your face.
“I liked you better the way you were. I’m sorry for ignoring you and I’m sorry for being so cruel. I just hated that you felt the need to change yourself.”
“I did it for you,” you told him, looking down at your lap, but he grabbed hold of your face, forcing you to look him in the eye?
“What?” He genuinely seemed shocked when you thought it was obvious. Maybe your advances hadn’t been as clear as you had originally thought.
“It was for you, Fiyero,” you repeated. “I just wanted you to like me.”
“I do like you, y/n,” he said. “So much. Why do you think I asked you out so many times?”
“You didn’t.”
“I most certainly did. I asked you to get coffee many times and even went as far as inviting you to dinner a couple of times.”
Oh, now you felt stupid. You replayed all of the scenarios in your head and sure enough, you had been reading it all wrong. Fiyero did like you and he liked you a lot.
“I-I didn’t know that. I-I would love to go to dinner with you, Fiyero.”
“It’s a date,” he smiled before pulling you in for a sweet kiss. “Make sure to wear that cardigan I like,” he winked, going in for another before helping you to your feet.
The two of you lingered at the door, sharing kiss after kiss until you finally left to go get ready, making sure to wear the cardigan that Fiyero was referring to. The entire time you got ready, you couldn’t help but smile to yourself, making a mental note to thank Glinda. She was the whole reason why the two of you had gotten together, after all.

Flower crowns and you all
Elphaba Thropp x fem!reader x Glinda Upland
Summary: A peaceful attempt at making flower crowns with Glinda and Elphaba.
Word Count: 0,5K
Warnings: none 🤍
ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You keep copying mine." Glinda's overly sweet voice grumbled, earning a snort from Elphaba, who was sitting next to you.
"I don't know if you noticed but we're in a field of flowers, all the flowers here look alike." Elphaba said, not bothering to lift her head to look at the blonde girl, who had an annoyed pout on her lips.
"I'm not talking about that, you know. You're braiding in the same pattern as me." Glinda held up the flower braid in production to prove it.
You frowned and shrugged your shoulders even more. The two of them had been arguing since they arrived. Uninvited. You were making flower crowns alone, enjoying the cool breeze of the late afternoon. A moment of peace, away from the typical chaos of Shiz.
But Galinda seemed to have a radar that pointed straight at you, because it wasn't long before she appeared, dragging Elphaba by the hand.
She blinked her big eyes at you and you gave her permission to sit down and join in your activity. Everything was fine, but soon Glinda began to get annoyed with Elphaba's crown.
"That's nonsense! I'm braiding them so they stay firmly attached." the green girl argued, starting to work harder with her hands.
"That's envy." Glinda hummed, pursing her lips so that her dimples were visible.
"Why would I be jealous of the way you weave flowers, Galinda?" Elphaba finally lifted her face to look at her.
"There are many reasons for this. You don't have the ability-"
With a loud huff, you stood up from the grass, dropping your flowers and brushing the dirt off your uniform. Grabbing your bag, you began walking away from the pair.
"Look what you did! You pissed her off," Glinda's voice whispered.
"Be quiet." Elphaba ordered, and turned to you. "Hey, where are you going?"
You stopped in your tracks and turned to them, "To my dorm."
"Don't you want to go study with me?" She stood up, her expression embarrassed.
Glinda hurriedly stood up and stood in front of her, "Don't you want to go try on dresses with me? Or watch me practice with my wand-"
"No, thank you." you turned around and continued walking towards campus with heavy steps.
Tumblr media
A few days later, you buried your face even deeper into the book you were reading when you heard Glinda's melodious voice approaching. You squinted your eyes as she let out a happy little squeal upon spotting you.
"There you are!" she exclaimed, then turned to Elphaba. "I told you she'd be here."
"I'm reading." you grumbled.
"Oh, we see." Glinda continued to act excited, pulling Elphaba closer to her. "We just want to give you something."
Elphaba opened her bag and took out a wreath, making you look up from your book, "We finished yours for you, you left it lying there."
You closed the book and stood up, taking the crown in your hands delicately, it was sloppy and had some flaws, but it was closed and someone had placed extra flowers on top.
"Which one of you did it?" you asked, not wanting to cause another fight.
"Both of us! Did you like it?" Glinda asked, looking at you expectantly.
You sighed in relief, finally. They did something without fighting.
"I- yes, I love it, it's beautiful." you replied and Glinda quickly took the crown and put it on you, Elphaba adjusted it slightly so it wouldn't be crooked.
"Oh, you look like a princess." Glinda said, pretending to wipe away tears.
"It suits you very much." Elphaba said, pressing her lips together in a smile.
Oh, how you loved those two idiots.

Went and saw Wicked pt 1 today and I just. Loved it so much.
(Somehow I managed to miss all the marketing / if there were any cast shenanigans, so this is SOLELY based on the movie itself and NOTHING else.) My thoughts, in no particular order (and with some spoilers ahead.)
My biggest fear was that the two leads would seem too old for the part, but they didn't.
I don't really listen to Ariana Grande that much? But her Glinda was PERFECT. She brought such lovely orange cat energy to the role; Glinda was so perfectly bitchy and stupid that it worked for me and I couldn't hate her, even when she was being The Worst (TM).
Also, both actresses have the "desperately trying not to cry" face down to perfection; Glinda in the opening song, trying to put on a brave face about "yes!! the witch is dead!!" but she looked like she was on the verge of tears the whole time? 10/10 no notes.
Whoever was in charge of doing the green skin did an excellent job. I don't know if it was CGI, practical, or a combo, but it looked really good IMO. They even gave her green freckles!!
THE DESERT FROM THE BOOKS.
BOQ IS FUCKING SPONGEBOB???
THE CHOREOGRAPHY. Parts of it were weird in a perfectly Ozian way! But others were gorgeous! Two scenes that got me were the ~Mysterious Stranger~ and Elphaba's mom and then Dancing Through Life esp. with the library. IYKYK.
Speaking of the library, I also liked the architecture.
It didn't feel too long to me? I was immersed the whole time, but that could just be me.
Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith have a cameo that is just beautiful.
There were several scenes that were shot where, if Elphie and Glinda kissed, I would have thought that was the natural progression of the scene BUT I also thought that Elphie had a spark with Fiyero which is good because 1. I'm an "Elphie has two hands" truther and 2. because if Elphie and Fiyero had no spark, that would be a problem in part 2. 🤣
(Like, they didn't fall in love which I wasn't expecting, but there was a spark. When they first meet, and she's going through her "yes, I know I'm green" checklist, "no, I didn't eat grass as a kid" is one of the things, and he's just like, "...I ate grass as a kid." Perfect. 10/10 no notes.)
I want to hold off my thoughts on Nessarose until part 2 and I see how they handle her, but there were several scenes were I thought, "you know, if she decided to go evil because people keep disrespecting her autonomy, I'd understand. I wish she'd focus on the people who were being disrespectful instead of being a despot, but like... I get it."
STOP GRABBING HER WHEELCHAIR.
I loved how they really put thought into how a goat would teach, with various foot pedals to operate his teaching equipment.
My Mom got actually sad about the lion cub. :(
Fiyero brought some "Chris Pines in Into the Woods" sluttiness. 10/10 no notes.
We need more Chris Pines in Into the Woods sluttiness.
The costuming in general made me Very Happy. I want the Shiz uniform, honestly.
Maybe I'll watch it again later and have Other Thoughts / more objective thoughts, but my first thought coming out of the theater was, "damn, this fucks."
I liked it a lot.

so i saw the wicked movie!
honestly considerably better than i would have expected from the trailers, it was clearly made with love and i do recommend seeing it if you're a fan of the stage show
but if there's one thing i'm a bit sad about, it's glinda's wardrobe colours
like. the costuming in this movie is amazing! and i have no criticisms about the design of glinda's outfits, they're really good!
but they're all pink
and i care a lot about the thought that went into the costuming of wicked (particularly how important blue is as a colour here), so for those unfamiliar with her original outfits, lets go on a tour of them!
in chronological order for glinda, we start with the school uniform
Tumblr media Tumblr media
notably not pink, but white. blue and white are shiz's colours, so she's not actually breaking any uniform rules (this will be important later), but she does want to stand out. this also contrasts elphaba's entirely blue uniform (all the other students wear stripes), and the fact that every other elphie outfit is black, because they are and always will be diametrically opposed
she keeps this one through a lot of the first act, until around popular, which is when we get her actually pink dress! and this is glinda actually being honest for the first time, so it makes sense this is the most accurate to her personality dress she gets (and i did love the extremely dramatic dressing gown she got in the movie here)
Tumblr media
glinda in the emerald city gets a yellow dress and sunglasses! and honestly while there's not a lot of symbolism in this one it is strange seeing defying gravity not involve the yellow dress (and also i think it would have made that yellow brick road bit have more weight but you know)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now here's where i say that thing about the white will be important later. defying gravity is the act break and the timeskip. and now it's important to note - every single outfit glinda wears in act 2 is blue
and i think for her the blue represents the status quo. she was never an outright rebel in act 1, as we see with her uniform, but she did want to make her personality and choices known, she wanted to forge ahead with something. it's defying gravity where she definitively makes that choice to conform, to pick up that colour she originally had left behind, and to work for power within the system instead of defying the system (elphaba, notably, wears all blue while at school but from one short day onwards always wears black, because that's a status quo she no longer cares to hold up)
act 2 opening with thank goodness, she's a little older, she's got more power, she's a community leader, and her outfit reflects that, in the most business look glinda could possibly have and still look like glinda (i do love this one just from a design standpoint)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
her wedding dress isn't just blue but also has a lot of green in it, which is fun on multiple levels (because green is the colour of the wizard, and what madame morrible wears after the reveal they're working together on this, but also was elphaba's from the start)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and her last outfit is also her first outfit, but i told these in order of glinda's life not the song order, because this is the pinnacle of who she's become. this is her dress right at the start before the flashback, and then for for good and finale
Tumblr media
it's enormous, it's princessy, it mirrors the dress from the original wizard of oz movie, and it's blue. it's the combination of who she always has been and who she's decided to become. everything she always wanted to be, at the cost of everyone she cared about
and im so curious to see how the movie costuming goes for part 2

was any of this real?
── fiyero tigelaar x fem!witch!reader ( i don’t get into powers too much but think of your powers somewhere between glinda and elphaba’s levels. not quite as powerful as elphaba but you’ve been training for a year longer than glinda. also you room with the 2 of them, pretend the room is twice the size of the one in the film, just because asdf;alsdgkdf )
there was a reason that shiz students joked you were the peoples princess. everywhere you went, you always had a kind smile for anyone you walked past. you always had a minute to chat, for anyone that needed advice or just a chance to vent. despite that, you wouldn’t classify yourself as outgoing.
you wore the same plain uniform as everyone else, didn’t bother with makeup to class, and your wardrobe consisted of creams and neutrals. one day, much to her delight, you ask glinda to give you a makeover, deciding change could be good. of course the whole school takes notice, but none more so than the winky prince himself.
to him, you were a challenge. you were one of the only students who didn’t fall for his charm. seeing you change your appearance makes him think you might change your mind about other things, or other people. not seeing the harm in a little wager, he places a bet. by the end of the school year, the 2 of you will be a couple. what could go wrong?
Tumblr media
a trope as old as time, but i watched wicked 2 again and felt inspired to write about our prince! if you’d like to be tagged when this is posted, let me know in the comments! no accounts that appear to be bots (this just means have a profile pic, not the automatic robot looking ones tumblr gives you)

AAAAAA! tony-award winning costume design for wicked 10000% deserved that tony: some thoughts
despite my usual area of disinterest in costumes, i've been going crazy about the wicked costume design all morning and i need to share my thoughts. because holy shit this design is crazy and more people need to know about the details of it. long post under the cut, you've been warned.
DESIGNER
susan hilferty!!!
she's fr a genius
her other broadway credits include spring awakening, funny girl, into the woods, and many more
also the taylors swift speak now world tour lol
side note about the wicked costumes, but the coat hilferty wore to the tonys that year was embroidered with the signatures of everyone who she wanted to thank for the award she would turn out to win. this included both the star cast and all the actual makers who contributed to the costume build :') (source)
preface to the rest of the list also: some of the sources here refer to international, touring, or other replica performances; the information is still all roughly if not exactly the same as the information to broadway.
THE DESIGNS
THE IDEAS
she describes the costumes as "twisted edwardian":
it's a contemporary eye on edwardian looks with an asymmetrical and twisted silhouette. for the non-animals, the idea was using high fashion to "distort" the human figure. (source)
asymmetry was the whole point! and it's very very intentional when costumes are balanced (more on that in the glinda section)!
on a similar note, she talks about how the show is "the struggle between individuality and uniformity" and how that's something represented in fashion trends, and in this design. (source)
INSIDE EMERALD CITY
they used sooooooo many shades of green, which is maybe obvious, but it's also an incredibly daunting challenge. the central colors are always green, but it shimmers and shifts with movements (and with the lighting design, but that's a different post). some examples of ensemble costumes below! (source)
Tumblr media
ensemble costumes from the australian production--each production riffs off the last one; hilferty is always adjusting and adding things for each new opening. (source, source)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
over 6,500 feet of ribbon is used in the emerald city scene. (source)
many of the costumes also use animal furs and feathers. this is also something really obvious and important in madame morrible's costumes. (source, quote below)
Tumblr media
also it's important to me that everyone knows that elphaba and glinda's quick change between shiz and emerald city is ~14 seconds. crazy. (source)
#GELPHIE MOMENT
there was always an emphasis on their relationships to each other and to the world around them--it was important to show the way elphaba and glinda are so deeply connected even as they are diametrically opposed to each other. their "ultimate" looks are framed as elphaba grounded, connected to the earth, and glinda connected to the sky. (source)
there was also very much intention to have them stand out amongst the ensemble in different, but equally impactful ways. (source, quote below)
Tumblr media
ELPHABA'S COSTUMES
she's visually grounded, sensible (ex. the boots in shiz). her costumes are intended to be earthy--the colors of her dresses aren't flat blacks, they're beautiful tones of earth, coal, mica, gems. (source)
there are so so so many layers and beading to the dress, but the inside of the dress is all smooth fabric to prevent getting caught on anything. (source - video)
her wicked witch of the west dress is 40 yards of layered fabric all stitched together. the intention was to create a continuous sense of rising earth; think like a stalactite. it's a heavy dress probably. (source)
included in those 40 yards are 50 layers of gathered ruffles made of 45 different fabrics for the skirt alone. it takes 3 weeks to make. (source)
hilferty's sketch below (source) vs final broadway costume (source) below! second photo really shows all the details of the layers and colors talked abt in the prev points.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the hat!! putting it on on stage covered the actresses' mic, so they put a mic in the hat. i love problem solving. (source)
elphaba's shade and contour makeup is purple, to pair with the green skin. it takes about 25-45 minutes to apply all the makeup. (source - video)
GLINDA'S COSTUMES
9 costume changes, 7 unique costumes! (source - video)
while everyone else is asymmetrical and has a literal twist to their silhouettes and necklines and such, glinda (and the wizard) is the only costume that is truly balanced at center, with the left and right being the same. this isn't quite true of thank goodness (perhaps a nod to how this scene provides a secret look at her unhappiness), but is really visible in her popular, one short day, and bubble dress looks. (source)
speaking of the blue bubble dress! it's intended to look lightweight and airy, but it's about 16 pounds of layers and layers of petticoats and sequins as well as a harness for her flight. one of the monkeys hooks her into the harness onstage. (source - video, source)
there are 45 petals in that dress that take 3 days to bead and 1.5 days to sequin, all by hand.
there are over 68,000 hand sewn beads are on that goddamn dress and 100,000 hand sewn sequins. i'm trying very hard to stay neutral on this post so it can be a future reference but that fact alone makes me insane, do you understand how much insane work that is, oh my god. (source - video, source)
below is hilferty's original sketch for the dress (source) compared with the final piece!! (source)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the blue bubble dress is inspired by a 1950s dior dress. comparison below, as well as close of up the sequin details!!! (source, source)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the quick change between this blue bubble dress and the shiz outfit is completed by 2 costumers in ~15 seconds. (source)
OTHER LOOKS
fiyero's dancing through life pants are inspired by riding clothes and polo uniforms. (source - video)
the shiz students!! they all have individualistic costumes but there's a pretty obvious through line to them--reminiscent of a school uniform while also providing room for self-expression of everyone in the ensemble. (source, quote below)
Tumblr media
madame morrible!!! she has four distinct looks throughout the show that are specifically tailored to each and created for morrible that goes on stage. it takes roughly 6 weeks to create them for new actresses; usually the same stitcher will work on one piece because they know it so well. (source - video)
CREATION & MAINTENANCE
THE PROCESS
for research, hilferty asked young girls about their image of "goodness": what does goodness look like to young girls? the answer was princesses and brides, so she studied historical dresses of queen elizabeth II and lady diana to influence glinda's design. (source)
embroidering, stitching, beading: all starts with hilferty's sketch, is interpreted and drawn into a pattern that is drawn in pencil onto the fabric. this alone will take 7+ hours. (source - video)
the specific type of beads and stitches are chosen. fabric is stretched out taut and then beads are hand sewn on, one by one. (source - video)
MAINTENANCE
the team: wardrobe supervisor + assistant, 12 dressers on the show, 4-8 day workers for maintenance between shows. (source - video)
these are built to last, but still with so much use and thus room for wear and tear, every piece gets looked at every day and repaired if necessary. (source - video)
MORE FUN TRIVIA
there are over 300 custom pieces, over 200 shoes, over 230 hats and pairs of gloves, and 30 masks in the show. (source)
every principle, ensemble member, standby, understudy, and swing has a costume unique to them, and they altogether do an average of eight complete changes per show. (source)
with every new production, hilferty is still adding and adjusting, and she still wants to do more. icon. (source)
everyone who plays elphaba is required to have green painted nails all the time (and the production doesn't pay for nail care, which is fucked up but that's a different post), though they can vary the shade with costume permission. (source)
about 70 wigs in the show that each take 18-40 hours to initially make. (source - video)
ok i need to go make lunch lol so stopping there BUT thank you for reading and isnt it sooooooo cool isnt it so neat ooohhhh you wanna appreciate theatre technicians and design SOOOO bad !!!!!!

I so desperately wish I could draw
That way, I could draw a picture of Shiz era Galinda, Nessarose, Elphaba, Boq, and Fiyero in a group
Then post-act 2, it's just Glinda, and Elphaba's hat is on a stand, and Nessa's chair is there, and Fiyero's captain uniform is on a stand, and Boq's axe is buried in the ground, and Glinda's face is scratched out with a crown doodled on top and little bubbles
They'd be in the order of: Fiyero, Glinda, Elphaba, Nessa, Boq. Very specific image. Or perhaps any combination of Boq as the tin man, Fiyero as the scarecrow, and Elphaba with the witch's hat afterwards, and Nessa's wheelchair is the only constant because she's the only one who dies
Or it's dictator Nessa, and she looks less than pleased to be there
