Your daughter calls him 'dad'
You’re lounging on the couch, tucked against Quinn’s side as he watches highlights from last night's game. His arm rests lazily over your shoulders, fingers absently toying with the hem of your sweater. Your five-year-old daughter, Ella, sits cross-legged on the floor, intensely focused on coloring in a princess-themed coloring book. She hums softly, the sound filling the quiet living room.
Quinn leans closer to the screen, murmuring something under his breath about a missed call on the ice, and you can’t help but smile at his focus—even off the rink, hockey never seems far from his mind.
Just as you reach for the remote to lower the volume, Ella drops her crayon with a satisfied huff. “Done!” she declares proudly, holding up the masterpiece for both of you to admire.
“That’s beautiful, baby,” you say warmly, but before you can continue, Ella scrambles to her feet and bolts toward Quinn.
“Dad! Look what I made!” she exclaims, shoving the paper eagerly into his hands.
The word—Dad—hangs in the air, and your heart skips a beat.
You freeze, unsure how Quinn will react. Though he's been in your life for two years, Ella hasn’t called him "dad" before. You never wanted to force that title on him, letting their relationship grow naturally. But now, hearing it fall so effortlessly from your daughter’s lips feels monumental.
Quinn stares at the drawing for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, a slow, warm smile spreads across his face, and he pulls Ella onto his lap, hugging her close.
“This is amazing, kiddo,” he says softly, kissing the top of her head. “I’ll hang it up on the fridge, okay?”
Ella beams, wrapping her small arms around his neck in a way that makes your chest tighten with emotion.
You blink back tears as Quinn catches your eye over her shoulder, his gaze soft and full of unspoken promise.
In that moment, you know—he’s not just here for you. He’s here for both of you. Forever.

Overheard
Synopsis: based on this request!
Warnings: mentions of parental fighting, upset child, ends fluffy don’t worry!
WC: 1.5k
A/N: hi :)
“Ella, honey is something wrong?” You had noticed the way your daughter, normally overly chatty, bubbly, and loud had fallen near silent at the dinner table. You watched as she shook her head, keeping her eyes at the nearly untouched plate in front of her.
“Just feeling quiet?” Your wife reaches out, placing her hand on your daughter‘s. “You know you can talk to us if something is going on.
You watch as she just shrugs, still not looking at you or Jessie. Glancing at your wife the two of you make questioning eye contact at each other, not knowing what to do. Ella was now a 12 year old, you’d began to prepare yourselves for the moody years to come, knowing you gave your own mother hell as a teenager. Jessie reaches her other hand under the table, giving your knee a squeeze in reassurance.
“I’m a bit cold, I’m going to go grab a sweatshirt. Anyone else?” Jessie says as she pushes herself back from the table. You and your daughter both shake your heads. Jessie gives you a glance before quickly darting her eyes in your daughters direction. You knew what Jessie was doing, your daughter had always been more open with you regarding her feelings, emotions, fears. Giving the two of you a tiny moment of privacy might just be enough for you to figure out what was going on in her pre-teen brain.
You watched as your daughter poked her fork around her plate some more before she set it down. “I don’t want you to get a divorce.” Ella finally mumbles quietly.
“What?” You can help but immediately react to the wild thought your daughter had just said.
“You and Mom.” You sit for a moment, feeling frozen still trying to process the conversation you were having. Your daughter thought you were going to break up with your wife, you couldn’t begin to imagine why. When you see your daughter’s lip quiver your motherly instinct kicks in, bringing you back to reality.
“Baby.” You stand up from your seat at the table, moving around it you squat down next to your daughter. You put your hands on her knees, encouraging her to turn and face you which she does after a couple moments. She looks just like Jessie, freckle covered face, curly brown hair, the tearful eyes bring you back to many nights comforting your wife after hard losses or tough times with the federation. Ella still avoids looking at you, just as her mother often did. “What makes you think Mom and I would get a divorce?”
“You guys were fighting earlier, in the bedroom, I heard you both yelling.” She sighs. “Sophie’s parents used to fight, then they got a divorce, and then she had to move away, and she only gets to come back and see her dad and friends once a month and, she,” a small upset cry comes from your daughter's lips. “You guys can’t get a divorce!“ A couple tears drip down her cheeks and you can’t help but feel incredibly guilty for the feelings your daughter was experiencing.
You hear the floorboard creak, looking over you see Jessie, sweater in hand looking bewildered at the words she had just heard from Ella’s mouth. You quickly mouth ‘one minute’ in Jessie’s direction and she nods, turning back down the hallway.
“El, honey, look at me.”
“Your mom and I are not getting a divorce.”
“But you were fighting.”
“I know, we had a disagreement and we didn’t handle it the right way.”
“But what if you keep fighting, and then you decide to break up?”
“Baby, that’s not going to happen, can I bring your Mom in here that way we can all talk about it?” Ella agrees with a nod. And you give a kiss to her head as you stand up.
“Jessie!” You called in the direction of the hallway. Jessie head pops out from your bedroom and she quickly comes over to where you were sitting by Ella, one of your sweatshirts now on her body.
“Do you want to tell Mom, or would you rather I do it?” You whisper to her, giving your daughter options.
“You.” She says pointing a finger at you.
“Jess, Ella overhead our argument this afternoon, she’s worried we’re going to break up.”
“Oh El!” Jessie joins you on the far side of the table her hand coming to rub your daughters back. Looking at your wife’s face it’s hard to read her expression, it was a mix of sadness and what seemed to be confusion. You watch as Jessie reacts to the same story that Ella just told you, how she overheard your argument, how her friend’s parents used to fight and how they ultimately got a divorce.
“Ella, I know that Sophia is going through that, and it’s probably confusing for her and not fun, but I can promise you, your Mama and I, are not going to get a divorce.”
“But you were fighting!” Your heart breaks as you watch your daughter become visibly upset again, a tremor obvious in her voice.
“I know baby.” Jessie continues to rub your daughter’s back. “Mama and I have been together a long time, when you’re with someone a long time, you get more comfortable, which then sometimes, you sometimes let your emotions get the best of you. We shouldn’t have been yelling at each other and I’m very sorry you had to over hear that.”
“I love your Mama, I will never leave your Mama.” Jessis says looking at you as she professes her love for you in front of your daughter. She then turns back to face Ella. “El, honey, do I ever make promises I don’t keep?”
“No.” Your daughter shakes her head, her brown curls bouncing as she does.
“That’s right I don’t. Did you know that when I married your Mama I promised that we’d be married forever? Did you know that I promised I’d be her wife even if we had arguments? Did you know I promised to spend the rest of my life with her?”
Ella doesn’t say anything, just shaking her head.
“I know you don’t, you weren’t born yet, but I told your Mama all those things when we got married. I made those promises to her, and I keep my promises. And guess what?”
“What?”
“Your Mama made the same promises to me.” Jessie pulls off her wedding band, holding it out to your daughter. “Read the inside.” You feel yourself smile watching Jessie hand your daughter her ring. You know what the words say, the words you always said to Jessie and words she always said to you.
“Forever and always?” Ella says reading off the inside of the band. As she does you take off your own wedding ring, handing it over to your daughter so she can see the identical inscription on your band, yours in Jessie’s handwriting as her band had your handwriting in it.
“Exactly, we agreed to be married, forever and always, that’s the promise we made to each other. Your Mama and I don’t break promises.” You both take back your wedding bands, placing them back on your fingers. “There’s nothing you need to worry about. I’m so sorry you overheard our disagreement earlier, that should have never happened.”
“It’s okay.”
“It’s not, that should have never been something you had to worry about.” You finally pipe into the conversation again. “Thank you for telling us what’s bother you Ella.”
She nods and a silence falls between the three of you.
“You ready to finish dinner then maybe we can watch a movie?” You ask. Ella nods before turning back to the table.
“I love you El.” You lean down kissing her head again before moving back to your own seat at the table. You watch as Jessie does the same, planting a kiss on her head before she moves back to her own seat.
Shortly after dinner you found yourself snuggled up in your pajamas on the couch. You and Jessie separated by the body of your daughter, who fell asleep just shortly after you’d put the movie on. You were so grateful that her small face was relaxed, the upset expression from before long gone as her chest rose and fell slowly as she slept, her head resting on your stomach.
Your arm was slung across the back of the couch, outstretched to touch the back of Jessie’s neck, your fingers playing with her baby hairs.
“Hey.” You whisper at her. Jessie’s eyes pull away from the TV to look at you, a smile immediately growing on her face. “I love you.” You whisper. “I know we already talked about it, but I am still really sorry for earlier, I shouldn’t have raised my voice at you.”
She responds immediately, the smile on her face remaining. “I’m sorry too, that was both of our faults. We were arguing for the same thing, just not listening to each other. She reaches her own hand across your sleeping daughter to gently squeeze your knee. “I love you.”
“Forever and always.” You nod at her.
“Forever and always.”

Leah or lessi kid fic after they won the Conti cup!
Lilo’s Sparkle
Mum! Alessia Russo x Child! Reader
Warnings: fluff, mention of injury, very very short.
___________________
You held your head up high, making sure your eyesight was level with the barricade of Alessia’s arms around you.
Your mummy was rocking you, holding you in a small confinement of blankets and an pink sweater. It was cold in Birmingham, but so was every other game your Mummy’s team played at. It was the same at Manchester, and London was no different. The only chance was the people. Auntie Ella only picked you up from your new preschool when she was down South, and you and Mummy would sometimes meet for orange juice at Auntie Ella’s favourite cafe when you were in Manchester.
But today you were in Birmingham, which was a often occurrence. London was your new home. You were accustomed to Manchester, and the weather in England was pretty standard across the country, so there wasn't much to adjust to.
“Do you want to go see Kyra with me, Lilo?”
You looked over at your Aunt Stina. She was perplexed, confronted with mixed emotions. You had teary eyes from the overstimulation, so you just wanted a cuddle.
“Is Stina okay, Mummy? Does she need a hug?”
There was cheering everywhere. Mummy had a very wide grin, and rosy cheeks similar to yours, except you were cold and she was exhausted. The 120-minute frenzy had left you feeling fatigued in your seat on the bench. It was a lot to ask a three-year-old to sit quietly without fuss without the company of her Mummy and her Aunties.
“How bout you ask to see if she wants one, sweets?”
You nodded.
With the comfort of Kyra in the first half, and Leah in the second, you were pretty much well-behaved. But after your favourite Auntie — though Stina Ballerina and Lee Lee never liked you saying that — Frida went down and stretched off the pitch, you instantly grew angsty and agitated. This was only exemplified with Mummy was subbed on in place of.
You ran over to Stina, yanking softly on the woman’s shorts.
“Do you need a cuddle, Auntie Stina?” You asked, fiddling with your zipper as you spoke. Your hood was up upon your Mummy’s discretion, the media attention on you the foremost of her worries.
“Oh, I always need a hug from you, Lilo, älskling.”
“Okay! Thank you!”
Stina knelt down at the feeling your body heat holding onto her calf, swiftly picking you up and cradling you in her grip. Vivi came up behind you, wearing a matching Arsenal jumper, fitting her medal over your neck.
“You scored the winner, Auntie.” You proclaimed, engulfing Stina’s jersey next to your cheek. “You are a superhero Stina. I think your a sparkle.”
Alessia’s giggles were heard not far from where you stood, the thought of you talking about people being a ‘sparkle’ endearing to her.
“Wow, Lilo darling, you think Stina did well?”
“Mummy, of course! She's a sparkle, remember?” You looked between Stina, Vivi, and Mummy. “Mummy and I were calling you a sparkle on the bus after you gave me a cookie, remember? Thank you, Auntie, you really are a star.”
It was considered your thing. To call someone a sparkle was your view of an utmost compliment. You are a star, superior in all ways, and for Stina, she hugged you a little tighter knowing you relished her hard work.
No amount of compliment could outshine a sparkle.
“You are too kind, Lilo,” Stina responded, her blush prominently painting across the bridge of her nose. “Thank you, but you are the biggest sparkle of all.”
You were now pressing your face against the woman’s cheeks, reaching out to play with Mummy’s collar. “Thank you!”
You eventually pushed away from all the celebratory chaos, waddling over to Lee Lee, and Kimmy, knowing they’d provide some serenity to your hyperness.
They were on their way to receiving the trophy, and when you found your way squelched between them, Lee picked you up, placing you inside the trophy with a plonk.
Everyone laughed and cheered as you were lifted into the air, celebrating flambountaly for their sparkle.
Not only as individuals, but as a club.

now playing. . . ella es mi fiesta by carlos vives
You remembered the day so vividly.
Cold January morning. Seventeen year-old you spent the winter vacations in Germany with your family. Though most of your clothes were of neutral tones, your sweater and lipstick were a matching shade of cherry red. The New Year’s brunch party was in full swing, but all Jude could do was watch as you struggled a bit with the German when asking for the reservation you and your loved ones held. His face, and subsequently his whole being lit up when he noticed you’d soon occupy the booth next to the one he was sitting with his family.
Jobe perked a brow up at his seemingly irrational reaction, turning to look the way his brother was. “Which one do you fancy?” He leaned in to whisper with such a childish manner, but at the end of the day, he was sixteen. Jude only sighed, replying in a low tone, “The one with the red sweater and lipstick.” He’d also come to notice the way your nose and cheeks almost matched that tone. Was it the cold or just makeup? He didn’t care, and his heart only melted further. He couldn’t hold it anymore, he had to talk to you. He felt you drew him in like a magnet.
You spoke quietly with your family, noticing them hungover. The menu for the pre-paid brunch looked particularly appetizing, eyes carefully scanning each option with your brain sending signals to your stomach about the idea and taste of each one.
“Hello, excuse me,” The voice made your eyes tear themselves away from the menu, thus stripping your mind from the fantasy of filling your stomach with food after hours awake without any. Your family was looking straight at you, and you tilted your face towards the man standing rather nervously in front of you.
You were taken aback for a second, straightening up in your seat. This man was bold, you could tell just from the fact he approached you in front of your family. “Happy new year to you all.” He greeted the rest of the table politely, confirming once more chivalry wasn’t dead. Your family replied positively— due to the fact most were still drunk— before busying themselves. You knew very well they were eavesdropping, just doing so in a classy way.
The young man, you could guess he was around your age, shifted from one leg to another. “I’m Jude.” He introduced himself, stretching out a hand. You were so used to the two kisses on the cheek, but you still stretched with proper grip followed by a similar introduction.
“Uh, I know this might be weird but can you give me your Instagram? You’re… gorgeous.” He was forward, but there was still some reluctance in his tone. You let out a tiny gasp at his words and just nodded, taking the phone he handed out to you and typing the user.
“Here you go. It was nice meeting you, Jude.” You smiled warmly, hanging back the phone. Jude thought he could’ve had a stroke right then and there, but he nodded and smiled back, “You too. Have a nice one. The food here is amazing.”
You waved Jude goodbye as he departed with his family, and the gossip started as soon as they crossed the door on their way out. Your brother recognized him, your cousin thought he was a whore due to the amount of followers he amassed, and your grandma thought he was extremely handsome. But all their opinions fell on deaf ears, you accepted his request. For a second you thought he was going to leave it at that, but the texting started almost immediately.
Jude had come to learn you were a year younger than him though you shared a birthday, that you were on vacation with your family around the area but soon were to return to Spain to celebrate día de reyes. He’d also come to learn he couldn’t tear himself away from his phone after you’d cheekily asked him for his number— you asked if he could fill out a form for school and sent in the empty contact information fields. Your wittiness grew to become one of his favorite things about you.
The texts turned into calls that took entire nights, the calls turned into incessant FaceTimes, some for the silliest of things. During mid-March happened the first turning point in which your relationship blossomed. The first long weekend you got away from school Jude flew you in, eager to spend those three days by your side. He received you at the airport with a bouquet of tulips, the flowers you adored to keep around once they were in season.
“You didn’t have to!” You whined, finally letting go of the constricting hug he was keeping you in.
“Nonsense, it’s the least I could do for my best girl.” Jude kissed your cheek gleefully, taking your luggage in tow before heading to the vehicle.
You greeted Denise rather shyly, but she was kind and welcoming, joking how she missed having a female companion to games. Growing up in a house with men, you were glad you had enough knowledge to comment on the match with her, sitting at the VIP area of the stadium. You didn’t want to be obvious by wearing his jersey, but wearing it on the trip back home would make your chest swell with pride.
Borussia Dortmund had won the game spectacularly, and it was the first time you’d find yourself cheering for another team that wasn’t your Madrid. You expressed how proud you were of him during dinner with Jude, but you’d noticed he was a bit quieter than usual. Knowing him enough that something might be wrong you just pinned it to exhaustion. But the idea never left your head.
“Ay no sé,” You looked back towards the door, afraid someone might come in and catch you actively gossiping with your best friend about Jude. “Maybe he’s getting cold feet now that I’m here, I told you; you were wrong.”
You knew very well there were bets placed back at home if Jude was going to ask you this weekend to be officially his girlfriend. But he was suddenly so distant, giving lukewarm touches before retrieving to his room in the middle of a movie. You sat staring out the window in the dead of night, legs crossed and pulled towards your chest. Your best friend started berating you, giving out excuses to feed the false hope.
You shushed her yapping by a weak knock in the door. Another one followed, this time with bravery included. “Te llamo ahora,” You hung up, taking slow steps towards the door. Jude stood on the other side in his pajamas, and the temperature in the room rose. He was seeing you in yours, even though you’d FaceTime at night a hundred times. “What are you doing here? You should be resting!”
“I’m so sorry, I can’t wait anymore.” He breathed out. He was holding a gift bag in his hand. “May I come in?” You nodded, swallowing hard before closing the door behind him.
“I was supposed to surprise you tomorrow with brunch, just like the day we met. The day I confirmed love at first sight is real because I experienced it with you the moment you walked into the restaurant.” Jude started, almost rambling. He was extremely nervous.
You stood there, dumbfounded, listening to him go on. “But I can’t take this anymore. The nerves won’t let me sleep.” You cracked a smile, noticing the way his bottom lip puckered out slightly.
“C’mere, Belli bear.” You stretched your arms out, pulling him into a hug. His taller frame draped over you in the darkness as he hid his face in your neck. You swore he could hear your heart pounding against your chest.
“You’re the woman of my dreams, baby.” He muttered, his hot breath hitting your jaw. “Do me the honor of being your boyfriend.” His empty hand cupped your face once he pulled away, and the only thing you could do was nod, left speechless.
The situation was something straight out of a fantasy, something you could only dream of. This man was a star, rapidly becoming one to watch when it came to European football. “What is it? You’ve never been this quiet before.” He teased, leaning in. His nose brushed against you, and you gave the confirmation by closing the space between you.
Your knees felt weak, it was the sweetest kiss you’ve ever shared with anyone. From the moment he had the bravery to approach you in that packed restaurant, you knew Jude was special. If it was any other guy, you wouldn’t have accepted doing long distance in the first place.
“I got you something.” He whispered against your lips once you’d pull away from the kiss. He removed his hand from your face, to reach into the bag. A jewelry box and a card. You inhaled at the jewelry box that creaked open, your eyes landing on the gold chain. “Read the card first.”
Song lyrics. ‘ I want to wear his initial on a chain ‘round my neck, chain ‘round my neck. Not because he owns me. Because he really knows me.’ Your eyes trailed back to the piece to notice a heart pendant with a J engraved on it. He watched you quietly, eyes dissecting your face for a reaction.
“You’re kidding.” You covered your mouth to let out a muffled squeal, throwing yourself in his arms. Jude had to stifle a laugh to avoid waking up his family, holding you close. He inhaled your scent in, and thought he was done for. “I love it, Jude. Thank you so much. Now you didn’t have to!” You let out a teary smile. The sweet tears rolled down your cheeks and straight into his gentle thumbs as he cleaned your face.
You carefully closed the box and placed it inside the bag, placing it at the nightstand. Jude watched your movements with a puzzled look before you tugged him down for another kiss. He let out a muffled noise of surprise, but held you against his arms while your own tangled around his neck. Your bodies stumbled around the room like two drunken fellas before landing on the bed.
You yelped, accidentally biting his bottom lip. He sucked a breath in, and you couldn’t help but laugh at the tiny accident, face hidden in his chest to avoid waking anyone up. “I think we should call it a night… boyfriend.”
Jude was bound to protest, but a yawn interrupted his claim. The exhaustion slapped him across the face all of a sudden. “Fine… girlfriend. Just one more kiss.” He complained, leaning to take your lips in his. It was short, since he then focused on peppering kisses all over your face. You giggled, and Jude’s stomach bubbled with euphoria from hearing your laugh.
“Go! Your mum will kill you!” You struggled as you tried to shove him off, and he kissed your forehead before retreating back to his bedroom.
You laid there, speechless. Your face plastered the huge bright smile, and you couldn’t help but reach for a pillow and cover your face as you let out a loud squeal.
The past year you’ve spent in a haze. And it was a good one. You finished school with exemplary results, Jude surprised you both at the graduation ceremony and on your birthday. But you had also spent the past year selling Jude the idea of moving to Madrid, your home city, and playing for the team of your dreams and hopes. He laughed off your insistence, but still listened to your rambles about the club’s rich history.
You could remember vividly how he woke you up one morning, insisting it was urgent. “My agent got a call.” He started. He sounded breathless.
“¡Buen día para usted también! Let me guess,” You rolled over to lay on your stomach. “Man City? Chelsea?” You scratched your stomach, staring at the ceiling, neither option interested you. It was barely seven AM on an early May morning, a Saturday to be exact.
“No.” You sat up at the gravity of his voice. “Real Madrid.”
You gasped, and Jude had to tear the phone away from his ear as you screamed and shouted. He waited for your outburst to end, smiling nervously at his teammates who passed by and heard the noises. He recognized the bed creaking a little too well.
“Okay I’m so sorry,” You exhaled, laying down on the bed. Your dog had started barking at your door. “Tell me all about it. I won’t give you my opinion since you know I’m biased.” You laughed breathlessly, kicking your feet back and forth.
Jude smiled. Even when you were far away and busy juggling university applications and a job, you were present for everything. Having your hardcore madridista family cheering for him during each game. Same thing happened the other way around; even when his career was at an all time high, he was there to listen to anything you told him. His family regularly asked about your wellbeing, and when you were going to visit. But most importantly, you were there for him unconditionally through the lows. For the last game Borussia Dortmund had lost the league. To comfort him in your chest as he cried his frustrations out, having helplessly sat on the bench due to injury.
Knowing he had to say goodbye to the club he’d grown up into the man he was without the title he realistically dreamt grasping.
But suddenly the end of May edged in, it was hands on to help with the move to Madrid. You had to hide the fact you were elated for the lack of distance between your residences— he was just a few minutes away by car. Still, Jude was acting a little weird. Denise was tense, sure, but he wouldn’t let you help pack his things up from his room. You blamed it all on the move, but the anxiousness and need to know only grew when June edged closer and your family was acting strange too.
Your mother talked to you a little too much for your liking, rambling on and on, while your father couldn’t help but stare at you with a certain nostalgia in his eyes. Yet again, without finding any plausible explanations to anything at all, you blamed it on your upcoming birthday.
Or dare one say birthdays.
Jude insisted on a date night before heading to the shared birthday party your family was hosting. He’d even buy you the cutest white mini dress for the occasion. He was receiving a pep talk from Jobe once you got there, both his parents checking in if he was sure of the decision he was going to make. He swallowed hard when you called him, voice full of enthusiasm for the evening that awaited you.
The way his face lit up, accompanied with a dashing smile, let his family know he was in his right mind and making all the right decisions. After his dad and brother gave him a tight hug wishing him luck, his mom gave him a kiss on the forehead and off he went to the car.
“Happy birthday amor! You look amazing. Can you believe it always rains on our birthday?” You greeted him with a kiss. Jude kissed back, but didn’t respond verbally in the same enthusiastic tone you had.
You felt something was off, his music selection wasn’t the best and he was barely talking to you. Until he let out a sigh, “Pull over.” He demanded, not looking back at you.
“What? Jude, what’s going on? Do you feel sick?” You took a turn into a street you knew would be empty, stopping the car and turning to face him. You cradled his face in your hands, checking for his temperature. Jude stared at the gold necklace, the engraved J you wore religiously giving him courage.
“I’m sorry. I can’t wait anymore.” The words drowned your mind in the characteristic sensation of a deja vú, and you were back in Germany, staying in the guest room at his old apartment. That seemed light years away considering how much had happened in the past year.
How much you’d grown by each other’s side.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to get through dinner like this, the nerves are killing me.” Jude breathed out, and for the first time that night, he met your eyes. The song playing was soft, a shared favorite for lounging and doing nothing together. “When I told you you’re the reason I believe in love at first sight, I meant it. In the same way I know that even though we’re young, you’re the one for me. No one will ever measure up to the woman you are. Allow me to keep growing as a person and football player by your side.”
Never in a million years you would’ve expected for him to pull out a small red box from his pocket. You instinctively covered your mouth at the diamond ring shining back at you. “Do me the honor, even if it’s ten years from now, of being your husband. Will you marry me?”
Now it all made sense.
The white mini dress he bought, the way everyone was acting for the past week or so. How Jude offhandedly mentioned he would never be able to top his birthday gift for that year. It clicked.
But it didn’t even take you more than two seconds after you'd connected the dots to nod. The tears pricked your eyes, and once again you found yourself speechless. Jude’s eyes widened at your physical confirmation, but you noticed the fear in his eyes hadn’t dissipated. “Yes, Jude. I could’ve easily said yes a year ago, too.” You let out a teary chuckle as his chest deflated in relief. He slipped the ring on your finger before taking your face tenderly in his hands.
He was crying.
“You make me the happiest man on earth,” He exhaled before sharing a kiss. Slow, oozing with passion. Your tongues shyly tangled, exploring each other’s mouth. He wanted you to cross over and have you sit on his lap, but a call interrupted the moment.
“You still want to have dinner… fiancé?” You asked, nose brushing against his. You saw as he beamed, and before he could capture his lips in yours, his stomach growled.
The two of you howled with laughter, as you returned back to your seat and shifted the gear to start the journey to your reservation. You spent the evening going through your wedding Pinterest board, heart drumming against your chest at the prospect of having to use it sooner than you could’ve expected.
You drove back to your home, getting greeted by your dogs at the door before the pseudo birthday-engagement party was in full swing. Your whole family made a surprise appearance, when you thought only those nearby were attending. Some of Jude’s teammates from both Dortmund and the English national team also surprised him, all of those you were acquainted with.
It was bizarre combining a birthday party with your boyfriend already, but having your engagement mixed in was another level of crazy. But one look at Jude— seeing the way he brightened up at the sight of you— made you believe everything was going to be okay.
The cake had a number 19 and a 20 candles on each side, each of you blowing your numbers before kissing. You shared the first piece for good luck, and it was the first moment of peace you’d gotten since you arrived.
“We’re getting married in the winter.” You declared with a low voice. Jude perked a brow, questioning the decision. “You have the Euros during the summer. There’s also the Olympics. No one will be able to attend.”
“Shit, babe,” Jude exhaled. “Six months to plan a wedding?”
Now that he said it out loud, it did sound batshit crazy. But wasn't the whole situation just that? After quickly sorting out your thoughts you still remained confident, feeding him a piece of the dessert. “It’ll be something small, intimate. Trust me on this one.”
Jude’s eyes softened as he shook his head, taking the spoon for you to scoop a piece and feed it to you. “I’ll always trust you with everything and anything.”

"our cheeks are nice and rosy, and comfy, cozy are we. we're snuggled up together like two birds of a feather would be"
— sleigh ride, ella fitzgerald
⋆⁺₊❅。aspen, colorado. december 1993. ⋆⁺₊❅。
“No…no, we’re not lowballing because this geezer didn’t know what he was getting into. We already went down half a mil for him, that’s plenty. 3.5, end of story.”
A long sigh expels from your mouth toward the logs above your head. Rafe purchased the Aspen cabin last summer, and it wasn’t until yesterday that you were finally able to make good use of it. Bags packed, plane boarded, you were pleasantly surprised that the pair of you even managed to make it here.
It’s a beautiful log cabin, built using the blueprint the eldest Cameron drew up himself. He spent months barking orders over the phone to get it done in time for last Christmas, yet here you were, a year later, lying in the Ralph Lauren-quilted King for the first time.
And Rafe is too busy barking orders into another phone to see it.
“No, no, just…get it done,” he snaps, and the plastic of the phone slamming into the receiver follows moments later.
His footsteps thump the hall. The bedroom doors swings open and Rafe sighs as he saunters in.
“Sorry, baby, it’s just…this fuckin’ deal, it’s ridiculous. I didn’t think I’d be this busy.”
You roll onto your knees, perching yourself in the center of the bed. “Are you too busy?”
Rafe whirls around from where he was slipping his wedding ring into a dish on the dresser. You squirm a little, a nearly Pavlovian reaction to the sight of him shedding jewelry. He never liked to dirty it. He never wanted anything preventing him from getting messy.
“What? No, baby, of course not,” he coos, taking one large step toward your figure on the bed.
His hands cup your face, thumbs pressing under your jaw. The pout on your face is slow to smooth and it makes him tut his tongue and shake his head at you.
“Come on, angel, ‘m sorry. ‘m not too busy for you.”
His kisses are soft and warm and soothe the sting for just a moment. Pattered over your mouth and scattered over your jaw, creeping slowly lower down your neck and toward the collar of your sweater.
"G-good, because...—because I have a surprise for you," you whisper, head tipping toward his affections.
Rafe scrapes his teeth over your collarbone, evoking a shiver that makes him chuckle. He pulls back enough to run the pad of two fingers over the aggravated flesh while he knocks your head aside with his own and fits it in the other side of your neck. His mouth there is all-consuming, enveloping a patch of flesh with hot breath and hard teeth.
"Oh yeah?" he mumbles against your skin, tongue lolling between his lips to roll over the indentations he left behind.
"Y-yeah," you squeak, fingers reaching for the nape of his neck and pressing tight.
When he stands to his full height again, Rafe's lips are swollen pink and coiled upward. "Well, show me."
You gently drop his hands from your waist, slipping your own under the hem of your sweater to lift it over your head. When freed from its fabric, you sit only in a delicate lace bra, comprised of Rafe’s favorite color on you: lilac. It was purchased unbeknownst to him a few weeks ago when the vacation was definite, knowing you wanted to do nothing but enjoy the quiet and remote solitude with Rafe in bed.
“Jesus,” he breathes, watching your breasts squeeze together as you unbutton your jeans and push them down. A matching set of panties awaits.
When your clothes are gone and only the lingerie remains, Rafe steps back to truly appreciate the sight. You kneel in the center of the bed again with warm cheeks, giggling when your husband ruffles the back of his hair. On the soft flesh of your chest, the intricate golden ‘R’ gleams in the soft cabin light.
Rafe can't help but reach out and feel it between his fingers. "Did all this for me, sweetheart?"
You nod, lip between your teeth and hands reaching for his shoulders. You smooth over the broadness of them, down his biceps, slipping to his chest as his knees bump the mattress with proximity. His breath tickles your nose, mint-scented from the tiny Altoids he pops between stressful phone calls and during every car ride.
Rafe hums, and it’s as he’s leaning in to meet your mouth with a sideways grin that his mobile phone begins to trill on the table in the hall. His smile slips instantly, a groan leaving his throat.
“No,” you pout, hands grasping at the nape of his neck again. “Don’t answer it.”
He winces, hands gently prying your own away by the wrists. “I’m sorry, baby, I gotta. ‘s probably about the deal.”
You fall back on your heels with his absence, scantily clad and suddenly cold. You glance through the brightness of the window, where the afternoon sun blares over the snow and creates a glare nearly blinding. When the wind picks up, it blows swirls of flurries across the fluffy ground and through the pines.
You know the other couples and families in the surrounding cabins are all likely whooshing down the slopes or snuggled in their warm, wooden confines. When Rafe proposed this vacation, he promised hot chocolates and fur blankets and diamond tennis bracelets.
And though the bracelet sits around your wrist, given yesterday morning on the car ride from the airport, the other things have been absent. Especially the naked bodies wrapped within those fur blankets.
“Jesus Christ, why is everyone so fucking incompetent?” Rafe snaps into the phone. “I was clear on 3.5. The next person to call and suggest anything other than that is getting fired.”
A breath puffs through your cheeks, lips pouted almost childishly. You sit back and kick your legs out, dangling them over the edge of the bed. You swing your feet over the Aztec patterns of the rug, toes painted Rafe’s favorite shade of pink.
“Todd, I’m not having this conversation again.”
Groaning, you slap your hands against the comforter and push to your feet. You find Rafe pacing the hallway, big white plastic clutched in a tight fist, free hand balled up in another. It unclenches when he reaches up to swipe his palm over the top of his hair. He turns on his heel to switch his direction, gaze grazing you.
You tip your head and huff, making your pout evident. Rafe turns again, holding a finger up to you. And if you weren’t annoyed before, you were certainly annoyed now.
“No—Todd, get your shit together.”
When the first finger pointing at the air makes its appearance, along with the narrowed eyes and furrowed brows, you know the stern business side of Rafe has taken over. And when that emotionless, ruthless side of Rafe appears, it’s hard to get the usual side of him back. It usually takes a few hours of decompression and a stiff drink to bring him back down.
But right now, you want him to pay attention to you. You don’t want to wait another minute, let alone a few hours.
While his back is to you, you reach behind you and unhook the lilac lace bra. It drops to the floor with a muffled thud, but it still takes Rafe another turn to notice the change. He steps to turn again, however quickly does a double take. His eyes find your bare chest and pebbled nipples, brows still furrowed but lips parted.
You place your hand on your hips and tip your head again, waiting. Paying attention now? twinkles through your gaze, and Rafe doesn’t appreciate the attitude. He makes this known through a shake of his head. Knock it off is the message coded through his gaze.
Yet it only flames your fire, and you’re reaching for the elastic band of your panties before you can stop yourself. Rafe tips his head back to the ceiling and pinches his eyes shut.
“Yeah, Todd, ‘m fuckin’ here. But my answer’s not gonna change.”
You fling the panties toward your husband, giggling when his eyes fly open. He instinctually catches the delicate fabric, balled up in his fist. It makes his jaw clench and he doesn’t even need to turn to know what awaits him. In his periphery, he can see every color of your flesh bared to him.
“Todd,” he says to the ceiling, tongue swiping of his lip. “‘m gonna have to call you back.”
He slams on the end button, but the giggle in your throat hitches when he finally looks at you.
“You’ve got five seconds to get your ass in that bedroom.”
His warning sparks through you like a hot surge, yet you’re slow to compute. His bright-eyed gaze burns through you intensely and pointedly, the ball of muscle in his jaw bulging with tightness.
You’re about to protest and justify your silly antics when he takes a step closer, tone low and gravely.
“1…”
You perk up, fingers looped behind your back. Another step closer.
“2…”
Your knees bounce over the bed, rumpling the fur throw draped over the edge. Rafe’s strides are practically leaps as he enters the room, tossing his phone and your panties toward the floor before knocking you on your back with a heavy hand to your chest.
“Fuckin’ brat,” he hisses. “No goddamn patience. Should teach you some manners, princess.”
You’re nearly giddy as his belt clinks open, zipper snicking after. You watch him shed his clothes with writhing anticipation, hands balling the blanket beneath you.
“But, it’s Christmas, yeah? And I’m feelin’ a little nice.”
He’s basically rambling to himself, but you’re not one to argue when you’re given a gift. He throws your thighs open, big palms cupping the width of them behind your knees. He uses his grip to tug you flush against him, eyes set firmly on where your bodies are prepared to meet.
“You, however,” Rafe continues, just barely breaching your entrance.
“Are nothin’ but naughty.”

to all the girls you've loved before part 5
author's note: this might be the softest part out of all of them? sorry for the wait, i hope the fluff makes up for it. :)
pairing: single dad!mat barzal x reader
summary: being a nanny for rich people was probably the worst thing that ever happened to you, until you started working for mat.
warnings: children, rich people, very volatile/toxic relationship
day forty-four
"does this look okay?" mat popped his head in your room where you were sitting on your bed with a book in your lap.
"you look like you normally do."
he ran a hand down his face. "i mean, is it appropriate to wear to a doctor's appointment?"
oh shit.
you forgot.
you jumped off the bed and ran into the walk in closet.
"did you forget?" mat teased. any sign of insecurity at his outfit choice disappeared when you sprinted into the closet.
"would you believe me if i said no?"
he laughed. "not a chance." he cleared his throat. "let me go wake ella up and get her ready."
you pulled on a pair of jeans and a sweater as well as thick socks and shoes. you walked out, nearly running into mat and ella in the hallway.
ella immediately perked up at seeing you and reached for you while mat rolled his eyes.
"can't believe she loves you more."
"i'm with her all day," you quipped. but the second the words left your mouth, you were backpedaling. "not to say that you're an absent father!" you amended. "i just mean that i live here and i take care of her when you're not here, so she sees me more and--"
mat's laughter cut you off. he placed a strong hand on your shoulder and squeezed. "i didn't take it that way, relax." and like nothing happened, he continued down the hall to the living room.
a sigh escaped your lips the second his touch was gone.
it was another ten minutes before the three of you left. originally, you were stunned that he asked you to join him in the first place, but when mat explained how confused he and tito were for that the first doctor's appointment, it made more sense.
everyone needed an emotional support friend.
you had a whole crew of them help move you out of your old apartment.
even the thought of that day made you want to tear up again. you'd never been one for having a large group of friends, usually just a close few. but after graduating college, after your school friends moved away from the city, somewhere along the way, you stopped picking up your phone to text them.
which was how you landed in your former apartment with natalie. she was a friend of a friend, and easy enough to live with.
until she fucked your boyfriend.
so when mat, tito, sydney, and marty all helped you move out? even after only knowing the latter two for less than twenty-four hours?
they put your old friends to shame.
"what's going on in that mind of yours?" mat asked. "you got quiet." you shrugged. "oh come on, you're thinking about something! i can see the wheels turning in your head."
"you sound like my mother."
mat guffawed and laughed at the same time in a sound that you wanted to commit to memory. "your mother? should i be offended?"
you smiled despite yourself. "she's alright."
"she must be if she raised you."
you crossed your arms. "you're such a flatterer."
"only for you."
you ignored the weird fluttering sensation in your gut and rolled your eyes. "wait till i tell tito that you like me more."
mat groaned and ran a hand over his mouth. "please don't, i get enough shit from him as it is."
interesting.
you turned in your seat to face him a little more. "and what shit would he be giving the great mathew barzal? spending too long on your hair? being too talented? having too many female fans?"
as you came to a stoplight, mat rubbed the back of his neck, looking increasingly more uncomfortable with your line of questioning. "not necessarily..." he trailed off.
but you ignored his signs of hesitancy and kept pressing on. "i bet it's about you being a dilf."
if the car was moving, you'd bet money that mat would've slammed on the brakes. but you were currently still sitting at the stoplight, so he just looked at you with an expression that boarded on shocked and horrified.
"a what?"
"surely, you know what a dilf is, mat."
he sputtered. "i mean i uh know what it is--"
"then why are you so flustered?" you asked, leaning on the center console.
"just wasn't expecting you to say that is all."
"i'm sure you and your teammates have said worse in the locker room."
"yeah but that's them and you're you and--" he cut himself off and chose to wave his hands in the air like that action alone would fill in the blanks.
"and what?"
mat accelerated as the light turned green. "i just didn't know you saw me that way."
you shrugged and sat back in your seat, ignoring the way your heart raced at the way the conversation took a turn. "don't tell me i'm the first person to say you're attractive, mat."
"well, no, but--"
"so what's the big deal? it's just me."
mat shrugged. "exactly. it's you."
you froze momentarily, but tried to brush his comment off like it didn't send a shiver down your spine.
the both of you were silent for the rest of the ride.
when you got to the doctor's office, both you and mat got out, with mat offering to carry ella into the building. though, the three of you made it twenty feet before ella was whining for you.
"my own child likes you more," he grumbled.
you just laughed.
the waiting room was semi full when the three of you walked in, but mat was the only dad in sight.
he leaned down towards you with a hand on the small of your back. "i'll go check us in if you'll find us a seat."
you did as he asked and ignored the way you could feel his touch long after he walked away. you and ella found a seat in a corner away from most of the women and children there. did you look antisocial? maybe just a little, but you weren't taking chances of ella or yourself getting sick, and you sure as hell weren't taking a chance on mat's health with the season in full swing.
"didn't want to sit with the other families?" mat asked as he took the seat next to you.
"i don't know those people, why would i sit next to them? they could be sick."
mat nodded along. "fair enough."
the three of you only waited a few minutes before ella's name was called. you stood up but it was mat who gestured for you to lead, again, with his hand on your back guiding you.
the nurse took a few vitals before taking the three of you back to the room. "the doctor will be with you shortly," she said before leaving you, mat, and ella alone.
it wasn't long before you heard another knock on the door and the doctor came in. she greeted the three of you before getting right down to business, directing you to place ella on the table.
doctor stevenson took ella's vitals while she wriggled around and reached for you and mat. "vitals look good," she said. "now she does need to have a few vaccines today..." the doctor kept talking but you were focused on mat.
specifically how all the color drained from his face.
you placed your hand on his back and directed him to one of the open chairs in the room, scared he might pass out if he stayed standing.
"is everything alright?" the doctor asked.
mat sat down and exhaled. "are you sure she has to get shots today?"
doctor stevenson's face looked grim. "do you not like needles or...?"
"i don't like seeing my daughter cry," he admitted.
"that's completely normal for parents," the doctor assured him. "if you'd like, you can stay out in the hall and we'll let you know when we're done. should only take a few minutes, if that."
you weren't listening to the doctor though, your eyes were focused on mat's face. a deep set frown worked its way onto his lips and you hated it. you reached out and touched his shoulder. "i can stay with her, if you don't wanna be in the room," you said.
his eyes met yours; for a man as confident as he was, you'd never seen him so hesitant. "last time she got shots, it about broke me."
"that's okay," you said. "i'll be here if you wanna step outside. i'll still be here if you wanna stay."
he nodded and stood up. for a second, you thought he'd make his way to the door, but he stood by the table and kissed the top of ella's head. "it's gonna be okay, ella bean," he mumbled.
doctor stevenson looked at you before pulling out the needles. you saw how mat kept eyeing them in the corner of his eye, but kept his focus on ella who was babbling like nothing was going on.
it took a few seconds after the first injection before the water works started. ella's cry sounded throughout the room but instead of looking at her, your eyes were focused on mat.
he was completely enraptured by ella, whispering soft things to her in an attempt to soothe her.
"it's okay, ella. dada's here," he whispered. "it's okay."
she kept crying despite the calm voice mat was using. she was twisting towards him and away from the doctor.
"just one more," doctor stevenson said. and in a minute, she was finished.
but ella wasn't.
the second the needle was pulled out and the band aids were placed, mat was picking ella up and cradling her to his chest. she wailed and wailed, only calming down when mat was bouncing her and speaking softly in her ear.
you halfway listened to doctor stevenson talk about what percentile of weight and height ella was in, half of your attention was focused on the gentle way mat was holding his daughter and how his arms, as strong as they were, protected his child from the big, bad, scary needles.
you were free to follow the nurse out the door to checkout. mat refused to let go of ella, so you were the one scheduling the next appointment and entering it into your shared google calendar.
ella was still hiccuping from the crying by the time the three of you got to the car. mat strapped her in while you got in the front seat and looked through the paperwork they gave you.
"everything look alright?" mat asked as he got in his seat and locked the doors.
"yeah, she's right as rain. i added the next appointment to our calendar."
mat hummed.
"what?" you asked.
"our calendar?"
"we share a calendar, mat. that was your idea, if you recall." you weren't about to be embarrassed about something he initiated. why would you? it's just a calendar, not something with an underlying meaning.
"i know," he smiled. "i just like the sound of it, is all." he put the car in reverse and placed his hand on your headrest.
"weirdo," you mumbled to compensate for the fact that you also liked referring to something as mundane as a calendar as ours.
mat scoffed. "i'm not the weirdo. you're the weirdo."
"oh please, i have an entire roster of your teammates that would say otherwise."
"you would trust their word over mine?"
you shrugged. "majority rules."
you didn't think someone could roll their eyes as hard as mat did in that moment.
the three of you got home a few minutes later. mat was in charge of getting ella while you grabbed his keys. you both waved to the doorman and headed up to your shared apartment.
god, you loved saying that more than you probably should.
"are you still going out with syd later?" mat called after you when you got into the apartment. you were headed back to your room while he was putting ella in the play pin.
you stripped out of your clothes and changed into something more comfortable. "yeah!" you called back, walking back down the hallway to the living room. "why?"
"tito and anders invited me out for drinks, so i'll need to find a babysitter."
"i can ask grace if she knows anyone--"
"don't. i'm the one who needs the sitter, it's my responsibility, not yours."
ella babbled in what you assumed was agreement.
later that day, you heard mat getting ready in his room while you got dressed in yours with ella playing on the floor with her toys. you weren't dressed in anything too fancy, just a nice black dress that had been sitting in the back of your old closet because your roommate said it was "too slutty for someone who has a boyfriend."
then she went and fucked your boyfriend, so you couldn't really say you gave a shit about her opinion anymore.
you strapped some heels on and gave yourself a once over in the mirror, fluffing your hair when it looked too flat. you scooped ella up and made a mental note to bring her toys out to her play pin later when you got back.
if you could even walk straight.
you weren't planning on getting shitfaced, but does anyone over the age of 23 ever plan on it?
you carried ella down the hallway and into the living room where mat sat on the couch on his phone with espn playing on the tv.
"i thought you'd eventually get tired of all the sports talk," you commented.
mat didn't even look up, he just liked a random person's photo. "it's nice background noise. besides, they're talking about sports other than just hockey."
"right." you walked in front of him to put ella in her play pin, your heels clicking on the hardwood. it wasn't until you turned around that you saw him staring. "what?"
mat cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck. "nothing! you just look...nice."
you smiled. "thank you! syd should be here any minute now. where did i put my phone..." your voice trailed off as you looked around for your cell phone.
"it's on the coffee table," mat said. and low and behold, it was. "do you have a coat? it's supposed to get cold tonight."
you nodded and headed to the coat closet beside the front door. you grabbed the black peacoat you had since college and tried to put it on before a pair of hands stopped you.
"let me help," was all mat said as he held the coat open for you. it took you a second to register what he was saying, he had to clear his throat to get you to snap back to reality.
"thanks," you said as you put your arms in the sleeves. your phone started ringing a second later, sydney's contact photo taking over your screen. "are you sure you don't want me to wait until she gets here?" you asked, talking about the babysitter. "i can help explain ella's routine!"
but mat rolled his eyes and herded you closer to the door. ""i'll be fine, go have fun!"
"if you need me, text me."
he gave you an award winning smile. "if you need me, call me."
you nodded and walked out, picking up the phone as mat locked the door behind you. "hey, i'm on my way down."
"great! i have an uber waiting for us."
you walked a little faster to the elevator, determined to not let the uber run up more money than was necessary, despite the fact that sydney was not strapped for cash.
you made it down quickly and without busting your ass on the polished floor.
sydney was waiting in a black suv like she was some government official in a marvel movie. she popped the back door open when she saw you and smiled. "you look fantastic!" she said once you got inside the vehicle.
you looked over her outfit which wasn't too dissimilar to yours, just not as revealing. "grace is joining us, hope that's okay!"
you nodded, vaguely recalling meeting anders' wife when jason had that meltdown in front of everyone.
not the best first impression, you hoped tonight would make her forget about that first night.
grace met you and sydney at a bar about twenty minutes away from yours and mat's apartment. she smiled as the two of you got out of the car, hugging you instead of shaking your proffered hand.
"it's great to see you again," she said. "you look fantastic."
"so do you!" you replied.
the three of you walked into the bar and were immediately greeted by loud music and an enormous crowd. you pushed your way through the people and ended up in front of the bar.
"get what you want!" sydney yelled over the music. "it's on me, tonight."
it didn't seem like a lot, but when you thought back to how jason and natalie both would conveniently go out with you on nights when they were broke, and then proceed to ask you to fund their near alcohol addiction? you were immensely grateful. if you were a pettier woman, you would've venmoed natalie and jason for the money they owe you in drinks alone.
but you were moving on, making peace with your new situation, your job, your new friends.
and mat.
you weren't sure what category to put him in yet.
"boss" seemed too professional. "friend" didn't seem heavy enough.
"what're you having?" the bartender's question snapped you out of your reflective moment. you gave him the order and watched as he started to make it.
your drink was in front of you after you waited for a few minutes. you sipped at it while walking to the table grace had picked out.
"so how's it going, living with mat?" grace asked as soon as you walked up.
you shrugged lightly. "not as bad as i thought it would be. i was expecting it to be awkward, but it's just been nice not to have to wake up as early to go to work."
sydney nodded. "matt told me barzy looks happier since you moved in."
"anders too," grace added. "my husband said he needs to 'meet this girl who has barzy smiling like a fool.'"
you flushed at their statements. "he's a good guy," was all you said.
sydney and grace were talking amongst themselves while you bopped your head to the music playing. you supped on your drink when a familiar head of hair caught you eye. it was followed by another familiar head of hair. you were squinting, trying to remember where you'd seen them before when they turned around your heart stopped.
jason and natalie.
you choked on your drink which caught sydney and grace's attention.
"are you okay?" sydney asked. she only grew more concerned when you threw your drink back, the alcohol barely burning your throat in comparison to the pain in your chest.
"i'm gonna get some shots," you said before stumbling to the bar. you ordered four shots of vodka and downed them all in succession at the bar top, and then doing your best to get back to the table afterwards.
your heart was pounding as you saw them cozied up in a booth. you wanted to vomit. you wanted to cry. you wanted to go over there and pour their drinks on their heads.
but mostly, you just wanted to go home.
but you couldn't. not when the night was still young. not when you were still feeling sober. you'd stupidly thought that the four shots would get you drunk quickly because you forgot that metabolisms exist.
you did your best to keep up with the conversation grace and sydney were having, and it was clear they were trying to include you. but your gaze kept drifting to how happy jason and natalie looked. and wondering how long they'd gone on dates when you were busy working, how many times did the sleep together before you caught them? you wondered if they were in love? or if it was just lust.
you wondered what made you so unloveable that he'd cheat on you. you wondered how despicable of a person you were that your roommate would agree to it.
you weren't drunk enough for this.
you excused yourself from the table again to get another drink. as you waited, you tapped your fingers on the bar, humming to the top 40s playlist playing over the speakers.
"can i get a jack and coke?" that voice sent a shiver down your spine in the worst way. you hesitantly turned your head and saw jason standing next to you, thankfully with natalie nowhere in sight. you didn't know what you'd do if they were both there with you in that moment.
he must've felt your stare because he turned his head and made eye contact. his jaw clenched a little before his lips curved into a sly smirk. "well look what the cat dragged out," he said. "where is he?"
you blinked.
"c'mon. like you don't know who i'm talking about?" when you didn't say anything, he rolled his eyes. "barzal. where is he?" jason glanced around the bar. "because i don't see him anywhere."
"why would he be here? mat's not my boyfriend."
"right, he's just letting you stay with him for free because he's such a good person," he teased.
maybe it was the shot placed in front of you. maybe it was the other four shots kicking in. but you downed the drink, wiped your mouth and shot back at him. "he's a better person than you could ever hope to be."
"he'll get bored of you eventually. people always do," jason scoffed. "you're his nanny, for fuck's sake. if you're not fucking him, he'll realize he could get better pussy and a better looking face from literally any other girl in new york. and once he realizes that, you'll be homeless and jobless."
you shook your head, willing the stinging in your eyes to go away. "he's not like you, jason."
"he's not gonna fall in love with you. you're a no good bitch who didn't know what she had when she had it. and i'm glad we're done, natalie is a thousand times more interesting than you could ever hope to be." with that, he turned on his heel with his shitty drink and walked back to his booth.
you walked back to your table but before you could even register the water running down your face, sydney was pulling you into her arms as you sobbed.
"sweetheart what's wrong?"
you could barely get the words out to tell her, but as soon as you did, she was pulling you back and looking you in the eyes. "i'm gonna call mat, is that okay?"
"please call him," you said. sydney brought you back into her chest with one arm while her other hand dialed mat.
"mat! hey!" she said with an overly cheery voice. "are you busy?"
just the sound of his voice, even if it was sounded like a small whisper, made you feel a little safer. she continued to talk to him through the phone until she hung up and hugged you tighter.
"he'll be here soon and take you home, okay?"
you nodded into her shoulder and cried a little more. "i'm sorry for ruining your night."
sydney squeezed you a little closer. "it's not your fault. your ex is a piece of shit."
mat must've texted syd a few minutes later because she was ushering you out of the bar to stand on the sidewalk.
it was a matter of seconds before mat pulled up and hopped out of his car looking like a man on a mission. in a blink of an eye you were being pulled out of sydney's arms (or maybe she was pushing you) and into his.
you could've sworn your life made a little more sense right then and there.
"mat--" you sobbed. "i--i can't--" and to be honest, you weren't quite sure what you meant to say, words weren't stringing themselves together like they usually do. maybe you were trying to say you couldn't keep doing this, or that you couldn't understand why he still kept you around.
it could be a million things.
but he kissed the top of your head and your brain was silenced. "let's get you home, okay?"
mat put you in the car and held your hand the entire way home, stroking his thumb on the back of your hand in a way jason never did.
jason.
you wanted to vomit but the interior of mat's car was too nice and he already ditched his friends for you, the least you could do was keep it together.
"do you wanna talk about it?" he asked.
you shook your head no, so he squeezed your hand.
when you finally got back to the apartment, you stood in the living room in a catatonic state while mat paid the babysitter and ushered her out. the second the front door closed, he was by your side, taking your hand, and leading you to the bathroom where he turned on the shower. when he made a move to leave, you grabbed his hand.
"i'm just gonna grab you some clothes, i'll be right back."
he was back in thirty seconds with one of his shirts and a pair of sweats. you were brought back to the first night you slept over after your relationship blew up. you should've smiled and said thank you, you should've said you appreciated all mat had done.
but you just burst into more tears.
mat knelt in front of you, wiping the tears as fast as they came. "hey, what's wrong?"
before you could even stop and think, you were launching yourself into his arms and wrapping your own around his shoulders. he didn't even hesitate to hold you back as tightly as he could.
"you're okay," he said. "i'll be right outside when you're done, alright?"
you nodded against his shoulder and hesitantly pulled away. mat seemed just as reluctant to let you go, but the steam fogging the mirror reminded you both that there was a line you hadn't (and maybe shouldn't) cross.
mat shut the bathroom door behind him and you stripped out of your clothes.
it was the fastest shower you'd ever taken in your life.
true to his word, mat was outside the bathroom door when you were finished in a set of sweats he wasn't wearing before. he looked up from his phone and held his arms out, and for what felt like the fiftieth time (though that still did not feel like enough), you were in his arms again.
"let's get you to bed," he mumbled into your hair before placing another kiss there.
before you could stop yourself, you mumbled back. "can i sleep with you tonight?"
mat froze.
hell, you froze.
neither of you knew what to do.
but a minute later he was pulling away. you felt the tears well up in your eyes at the thought of him rejecting you, but what did you honestly expect? him to say yes? you moved to go down the hall to your room, but his grip on your hand stopped you.
"c'mon," was all he said.
up until this moment, you'd never been in mat's room. it was about what you expected, king bed in the middle of the room, a dresser, a few clothes strewn about. it looked lived in.
mat got in the bed first and extended his arms to you. it was like he was the center of the earth, pulling you in with such a strong gravitational pull, you stood no chance to resist it.
you were curled up against his chest a beat later.
"thank you," you said.
"anytime," he said against your hair.
your head was placed right over his chest where his heart beat loudly. the sound of it began lulling you to sleep.
it should've been a picturesque moment, but it was tainted by the lingering anxiety in the back of your mind.
was jason right? was this a bad decision? would mat kick you out if you never have sex with him? would he kick you out if you did?
but then mat started running a hand over your hair and down your back repeatedly, and all your worries disappeared.
you'd have more time to think about that tomorrow.

HEAVEN CAN WAIT | A.H.
pairing: groundskeeper!aaron x heiress!reader
word count: 1.5k words
warning: nothing? you simply have to listen to heaven can wait by dean martin as homework
summary: in a form of contained rebellion, you move to a little cottage on a farm in the middle of nowhere to be alone, well alone with the handsome groundskeeper you agreed to keep around to chase the critters away
Dinner was plain but tasteful, a simple recipe you'd found in the old cooking book Aaron found while cleaning the place before you moved in. The silence was beginning to get more bearable during dinner, soft smiles and quick glances filling the time between forks scraping against plates and talkative cows rebelling against the moon. Aaron was getting more comfortable spending time in the main house with you instead of retreating to his cabin at night. Despite your days being everything you'd dreamt of, the picture of peace, nights were still a challenge. The idea of having no company besides your own thoughts and the occasional wandering donkey strolling by was still something to get used to. You'd been finding reasons to have him over at night, a creaking floor, a window that wouldn't close, really whatever you'd discovered during the day- though soon enough late dinners seemed an easier offer than handy work at midnight.
"Do you think it's getting better?" you dared, being adventurous between a bite of pasta, it startled him despite the delicate delivery, his mouth full and bread roll still caught between his teeth- you smiled shyly. "My cooking," you explained and he had some time to think about it as he chewed.
"It's never been too bad," he offered and you had to admit, it was an exciting prospect, having a proper conversation with him.
"Really?" he hummed as an answer, focusing back on his plate, eyes robbed from your view. He really wasn't one for needless pleasantries.
You weren't sure where your father found him, though everything you knew about him was partly fabricated by imaginative daydreaming, you felt drawn to him like no one ever before. He was kind, in ways you weren't used to men being kind, gentle in ways that belonged to novels. You wanted to know all that there is to him, though mystery has its appeals, it was odd being so consumed by thoughts of someone who was still mostly a stranger. You'd thought it merely loneliness, disconnection from the world, too much time spent reading the vintage novels of buried authors that had a way of painting pictures too soft and romantic.
For a while, you'd found yourself comparing him to the likes of Franz Kafka, though seemingly not as disturbed, definitely as morbidly unwilling to see the interest of his own character, the romance of his budding presence. Maybe even the lyricism of Chet Baker, equal parts devotion as melancholy. He was handsome, more so on the colder days when he'd be in too much of a rush to rid the chiseled features of his face of the stubble climbing past his lips. When he'd wrap himself in a thick turtle neck sweater, granting you freedom from being distracted by the flow of his neck to his shoulders, much like the smooth melodies, the soft harmonies of wordlessness of Ella Fitzgerald. You couldn't understand, how you'd allowed yourself such pleasantries of thinking, such poetic comparisons when you were sure he'd not considered the same.
"Fall is starting soon," he spoke over his glass of wine, and with his scarf discarded when he sat down you found a moment of curiosity with the veins in his neck, the movement of his adam's apple. "I imagine you'd want me to come over sooner in the afternoon?" you lifted a brow, momentarily wondering about the request and then looking towards the door, the wind not agreeing with the aged wood, the sound something awful as you attempted to look back at Aaron who offered you something like a smirk when you did.
"What?" you breathed, tugged at the loose cardigan around your shoulders, now very much aware of the wind and the trees brushing against the window and the tiles you now regretted embracing with bare feet.
"The sun sets earlier this time of the year," he explained with foreign casualty, the small kitchen table making it easy for him to reach over and take your empty plate, and you stole a second to settle when he brushed past your should on his way to the sink. "The wind makes the power unstable, but I have candles to spare since you're uncomfortable with the dark and I'd bring over some wood for a fire since you get cold so easily."
You'd be embarrassed if you weren't so enlightened, in awe by his prolific insights into your being, it made you wonder perhaps if he was just as curious about you as you were about him. Though your father had to give him at least somewhat of a background regarding why you'd settled here, you wondered if he had to creatively fill the blank pages too.
"I'd have to learn to make soup, or stew at least," you decided not to take note of his observations, standing instead to take the empty pot and half-full bottle of wine from the table. "If I remember correctly you mentioned something about being able to make bread," he scoffed, a familiar sound, more so than his voice, when he spoke it never seemed to sound the same, always tinted with whatever he was doing or feeling, you'd speak to him so scarcely that every time felt like a different person.
"Sourdough," of course, he'd brought you some in the first week you'd moved here when you weren't as comfortable with the recipe book yet. "It would be perfect with your stew," he didn't see your shy smile, it had been swallowed by the time you went to stand next to him, fingers burning at the accidental contact when he took the pot from you to wash it as well.
You'd turned the record player on earlier, a gift from your mother, a set of records from the sixties to go with it, you'd turned on the first one that you found, it tended to get lost around Aaron, the volume of his presence something deafening despite his silence. Now, however, it felt too loud, transportive in its harmonies of love and longing and time frozen somewhere in a notebook full of souls and lyrics. It drifted through the cold stone cottage like leaves would move with a breeze and hummed through your nerves like poetry had been written into your veins in simple seconds. Forced you to savour it before it ended and though Aaron's hands were still busy in the sink you stole a glance to see him lost in thought, eyes glazed in memory maybe, a fantasy and you felt like you knew everything there is to know in that second.
Desires was like something written by Maya Angelou, completely consuming, too much dept to mention them out loud but you realized the reason Aaron was such an anomaly to you was because of the desire your heart had hidden in simple out-of-reach visions. His arms wrapped around you in a laughably uncharacteristic way, hands sprawled out over the wrinkles in your sundress, daringly close to the strings that hold it together. Eyes closed, conscious dreaming as his voice drawls lowly by your ear, lips brushing your skin, shivers up your spine, airless like you were floating about the room instead of moving ever so slowly to the music. There was a numbness to his touch, phantom, as if your body wasn't yours, as if his fingers weren't real. You wondered if it could last forever, how long the song would play, when the record would stop, you wondered if reality was really worth all of that if a second of hallucinatory bliss could spread through your body like fire, burning through every muscle.
"Would you like to stay?" you cleared your throat, voice unsteady somehow and you weren't sure what you were hoping for, truly you'd experience much more of heaven in your head, in the pages of your journal. "The cake is still too hot for me to decorate it."
"I could stay," he agreed and you truly used every ounce of willpower not to look as he dried his hands, a soft smile, an unfamiliar promise as you caught the briefest glance at your lips, up your face, back to the wall. "I've been meaning to fix your bookshelf for all the new novels you found at the market," you wanted to object, to suggest that he didn't have to work, and could just stay for a while, but he was walking off into your room already. About halfway through your mumbled musings while folding the tablecloth and napkins, he stuck his head out from the hall. "Why don't you restart the record before you come this side," you only had it in you to nod with a smile, hoping it didn't seem too eager, too hopeful. You did as he asked and with a little twirl, you grabbed your book from the coffee table to go watch him work.
Heaven can wait.

Rosie Rosenthal Headcanons
~Mr. and Mrs. Rosenthal Edition ~
🌹: Hi, Mrs. Rosenthal. Hope you’re doing well. How’s the hubby? These are some Rosie x Reader cute and domestic headcanons that cover some tiny details that make married life even more special
♥️: Fluffy fluff. If you’re feeling horny, stay to the end and I’ll help you, doll. Thats really it. Hope u enjoy.
Humming. He hums softly during the most comfortable silences, making them even more cozy. You could be reading a book on a quiet May afternoon, watching him work at his desk on a cold January night, holding hands while watching the August sunset from your balcony.
Whenever you’re singing a tune, he’s going to hum along with you
Can’t remember the name of that one Ella Fitzgerald song for the life of you? Hum it together until a namesake lyric pops into one of your brilliant minds. Followed by a “Ohhhh, you’re right. It is that one!”
A comfortable hum during the times when you’re crying on his shoulder, his hand rubbing your back in small circles, your cheek against the fabric of his grandpa sweater
Rosie’s blue eyes have always been one of your favorite features of his.
They are as vibrant as technicolor, always displaying so much emotion.
Looking into Rosie’s eyes is a constant reminder that as long as you have him, life will never again be sepia toned.
Rosie spoils you in the most nonchalant ways. Buying his wife a gift is never made into its own big event.
He notices how you eye a certain sparkling necklace while walking hand in hand by the jewelry store window? The next day, those same diamonds are lying on your vanity, waiting to be worn.
For some reason the flowers in the vase on the dining room table never seem to die? Hmm I wonder why.
Little do you know, those roses were replaced with fresh ones last night
Rosie buys beautiful bouquets of flowers as pink as his wife’s cheeks on a chilly day
Hides them in places you’d never look until the sun goes down to rest for the night and you are securely fast asleep next to him
As soft light floods through the windows in the morning, the glass of the vase creates a rainbow and the flowers sitting delicately on display look new as ever
Another small detail that your home would like an incomplete puzzle without?
Him and Hers plaid robes hang gently on delicate hooks behind the bathroom door
Technically, both robes were bought and owned by Rosie before he even met you
But they’re so damn comfy that they’ve become happily coparented between the two of you
Whenever your choice of robe starts to lose the distinct and comforting scent of your beloved husband, the two of you switch in order to replenish
A constant cycle of robe wearing
The record player is the most used and well loved item in the household
Soft jazz fills warmly lit rooms
Not much of a dancer are you? Rosie insists that the two of you slow dance to his favorite love song anyway
Don’t worry, it is not a game of skill. Maybe he hits a silly dance move now and then to distract you from the worry of accidentally stepping on his feet.
He spins you around like Prince Charming does Cinderella until both the rotating and romance makes you a little lightheaded.
He also loves a good candle. (Don’t we all?)
Not only for when he is trying to set the right mood for homemade dates at the kitchen table and nights full of lovemaking in your bedroom
but also to further enhance the warm and comforting atmosphere that fills any room that his love steps into
Cuddling in eachother’s warmth where the cold evening air of the bustling city outside cannot touch you
What else sometimes happens while you two lying in bed on a weeknight? Gossip.
It’s a safe space to talk about anyone or anything
When your little ones start school and the two of you join the PTA, the reason being not because you want to but instead having the “new parent” fear you were the only ones not in it. Do you regret it? No. The tea is unexpectedly piping hot.
“Remember how late we stayed up making those cookies after finding that bake sale flier at the bottom of her bookbag? Today, the Joneses went on and on about how they had a family recipe. Guess what?…their brownie container had a price tag, Rosie.”
Maybe a family member said something utterly ridiculous at the family reunion that you aren’t able to talk about until you’re in the comfort of your own walls
Something that even has Rosie uttering “Now if I was his wife…” or “I don’t know about his mother but if my mother caught me doing that…”
A lot of “I can’t believe that happened” head shakes
A lot of “You were right about that, honey” nods in agreement
Rosie also takes the time to tell you about his cases. Him and his co-workers always act so professional but sometimes you need an outside opinion to confirm how ridiculous some people are.
That outside opinion is Mrs. Rosenthal sitting on the bed stirring a cup of cocoa
Speaking of drinks, Rosie likes his coffee black
You learn that the morning after you spend your first night at his
What else do you learn after that riveting first night? Your man fancies a bath. A warm bath after sex is only part of his phenomenal aftercare routine.
He puts oils into the water, massages your sore thighs, and wraps you in a comfy soft robe when you get out
You two don’t argue often but when you do? You hate to admit it but Rosie is usually right
Even when he isn’t right, he has you second guessing yourself because…he’s a lawyer and being a good arguer is part of the job description
He’s a “I need to get the last word in” kind of person, even if it’s just a snarky or sarcastic comment
You two always make up though!
Make up, makeout, and make love is always the order
My last thot for today…dad jokes
If Rosie is going to do one thing, it’s make you laugh
He’s goes out of his way to see your pretty smile as much as he can
Your sweet giggles can easily compete and win against the sparkling sound of wind chimes
Your laugh is as melodic as his favorite song. It *is* his favorite song.
He’s so good at dad jokes, you have to make him a father. That’s good logic, hm? I definitely think so.
They’re purposefully bad and cheesy. So unfunny that they’re funny and trying to hold in the laugh always fails.
Your husband’s a dork and you love him that way
