“I’m wearing Sandy Liang top and skirt with Gil Rodriguez tee under, Kiko Konstantinov x Hysteric Glamour x ASICS sneakers and Gucci purse. Currently, I’m tapping into how I wish I dressed as a little kid, mixing active wear (ie sneakers / camping slippers / track pants / fleeces) with more dainty and cutesy pieces like prairie dresses and big cotton frilly skirts. It was always a battle with my mom and me between wearing dresses and tracksuits.”

Marissa R. Moss at Rolling Stone:
In 2016, at what became an ill-fated celebration to hopefully usher in the first female president, there was not one country music performer at the Democratic National Convention. There were pop stars like Demi Lovato, Lenny Kravitz, and Lady Gaga, but there wasn’t a single performance that drew from the country or Americana worlds. This was a mistake, clearly: The attitude was that country music and Southern/rural stuff was for Trumpers, and to be avoided at all costs, and that doesn’t end well when you’re trying to win an election, or understand the American public at large on a level deeper than “red state bad.” There are blue voters in those red states, if you get them to the polls, but you have to speak — or sing — their language to get them there.
The first night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, wherein we’ll once again make a go for a female president, looked and sounded a whole lot different from eight years ago. There weren’t big pop-star performances (though surely they are coming), but there was country: a country artist, Mickey Guyton, and a country person, Jason Isbell, singing “Something More than Free” with his unmistakable Alabama drawl in front of an image of a barn with an American flag on it. These signifiers have been generally reserved for Trump rallies when it comes to the Venn diagram of music and recent politics, with country music’s conservative core latching on to the jingoist beat in earnest since 9/11, though the alliance between the two dates back far longer.
By opening their convention with Isbell and Guyton, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz seem to want to change that, with the cherry on top appearing in the form of a Harris/Walz camouflage baseball hat released a few weeks ago — it sold out instantly. But it’s country artists like Jason Aldean, who appeared at the Republican National Convention and engages in the workingman’s sport of country club golf with former president Trump, who like to own this sort of symbolism. His 2019 album, 9, even contained a song called “Camouflage Hat.” That’s the genius work of this one small bit of Harris/Walz merch. The hat reclaims the rural and Southern identity that mainstream Democrats have long ignored, all in with the power of one nifty little cap. Ella Emhoff proudly wore hers last night, while Walz displayed his own — also camouflage — Jason Isbell hat backstage.
Meanwhile, it’s the Trump supporters who are the ones getting country music wrong, soundtracking their TikTok videos in support of the ex-president with none other than The Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice, which was written after their expulsion from Nashville in the wake of anti-Iraq War comments and their refusal to apologize. This baffling phenomenon by the right seems to come from either an inability to Google, or an assumption that everything country music must be conservative, and it’s hard to decide which is worse.
Between Jason Isbell, Maren Morris, Mickey Guyton, and The Chicks, the DNC was eager to embrace country music. That is a good thing, as Republicans don’t have a monopoly on the genre. #DNC2024 #2024DNC

Some nice news: Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris’s daughter, is a big supporter of trans rights. She even raised money for the Black transgender organization, For the Gworls, by having a donation raffle.
While politicians’ family members do not necessarily indicate the politician’s policies, I think this is an indicator of good things in the future WHEN Harris gets elected.
I’m going to try and refer to Kamala Harris as Harris, once established who I am talking about, from now on because we as a population call female politicians by first names and nicknames far more than we do to their male counterparts
Edit: deleted a few tags and edited the last paragraph

Today, thanks to the right's inept attempt to attack her, I discovered Kamala Harris' daughter Ella Emhoff is Louise Belcher. This isn't even a costume (well, it kind of is, she was modeling a Blue's Clues sweater that I think she knitted), she just happened to look like Louise.
Keep up the attacks, MAGAts. They're going great. 👍🏻

Emma Mae Weber at MMFA:
Over the course of the Democratic National Convention, right-wing media personalities targeted Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter Ella Emhoff, strangely claiming there is something wrong with her hugging her father Doug Emhoff and attacking her appearance.
Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, attended the Democratic National Convention, prompting attacks from the right
Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris and daughter of Doug Emhoff, appeared by her father's side the first night of the Democratic National Convention sporting the viral Harris/Walz camo hat. Emhoff is a fashion designer and model and is known to some as “the “First Daughter of Bushwick” in reference to her fondness for knitting and stick-and-poke tattoos. [The Independent, 8/20/24; Forbes, 8/20/24; Vogue, 1/28/21]
Harris and Emhoff’s blended family has been the target of attacks from the right, including vice presidential candidate JD Vance, who suggested Harris was a “childless cat lad[y].” Vance equated giving birth with having a “stake in America,” ignoring that Harris is a parent to her stepchildren. [NPR, 7/29/24; Twitter/X, 8/22/24]

Today (12/16/23) is the 10th anniversary of one of my favorite comedy specials—
what.
Yes, it's been a whole decade since Bo Burnham graced the world with his YouTube special (and now major comics are following his model lol). While people think of what. as a Netflix special, Bo's plan was to distribute it freely via the internet on 12/17/13 (and he took a pay cut to make it happen!).
Here are some other fun facts about Bo's second comedy special:
1. The trailer is filmed in the Ruhm, Bo's guesthouse and studio that makes an appearance again in Make Happy and in a little special called INSIDE 😉
youtube
2. This comedy special was Bo's first professional collaboration with Chris Storer (creator of The Bear) after they met on Adventures in the Sin Bin and it marks Bo's first time directing. They would go on to co-direct Make Happy together and Bo's obviously directed MANY items since, including his incredible story about a teenage girl called Eighth Grade!
3. Bo begins the special wearing three pairs of pants—two red ones and one black pair—a white tee, a dark gray hoodie, confetti in one pocket, a pack of playing cards in his OTHER pocket, and his mouth is full of water. Damn, that's a lot of stuff! 🤯
4. But he doesn't have the water IN his mouth for the stool scene! That was spliced together with the live performance footage (and pretty seamlessly, clearly, since folks asked him about it online).
5. The song Repeat Stuff has a brilliant music video that accompanies it. And the girl that Bo murders at the end is none other than the Vice President's stepdaughter! That's right, Ella Emhoff is Kamala Harris's daughter through marriage, and she is a famous model and artist.
6. Speaking of that music video, the exterior of the house Bo breaks into at the beginning is Bo and Lorene's own home at the time. And that house was used in The Nightmare Before Elm Street franchise (a fact the realtors emphasized when selling the place in 2021—I would have focused on Bo's studio personally haha).
7. The music video also has a cameo from one of Bo's friends, Paul Scheer, as the manager! I actually met Paul at a Human Giant event back in the day, and he was very nice (along with Aziz Ansari and Rob Huebel).
8. While Bo released his special entirely for free, he did have two other items that were for sale at the time—the what. CD (recorded in Madison, WI, thus he says "Get on my level, Madison" in Sad) and his book of poems Egghead. I own the poetry book, obviously, but I cannot find the CD for sale anywhere.
If you or someone you know is willing to sell their copy, PLEASE DM me! It's the only item he put out that I don't own in some capacity—and I would love to complete the collection! 🥰
9. Egghead is amazing in both its print and audiobook versions. In fact, the latter is like a whole separate comedy special and well worth the price to hear Bo reading so enthusiastically and with different hilarious voices. Highly recommended...and I have a kid-friendly list of poems here if you're interested.
10. Finally, what. features two of my favorite subversive bits: Andy the Frog and the Fishing song.
I was thinking a fun video idea would be to create a Bo Burnham "Kids Show" with all of his darkest routines that seem like they came out of a demented Sesame Street (so like Wonder Showzen haha).
Here's the potential order:
-Disney Lessons (Words Words Words)
-what. Intro (starting with "melted into childlike wonder" to Lizard)
-How to Make the Perfect PB Sandwich
-A Slow Joke
-Andy the Frog
-The Squares poem
-Fishing in the Park
-How the World Works (can include Outtakes Bo and Socko as well)
-YouTuber Thank You
Anyway, I just think that would be hysterical if any editor wants to take a crack at it. Please give me credit tho! ✌🏼🐔
