Hi Laya :) I was wondering if I could ask you for some book recs for some NZ YA to look for when I'm in Aotearoa next month. anything set in NZ would be wonderful and I'd love to try a few Māori authors. and I know you live on the North Island but if you know any good bookshops worth a visit in Christchurch or Dunedin, I'd love to hear about them ^.^ hope you're well!

Honestly I'm not super familiar with a large chunk of NZ YA because I think a lot of what I see is by white authors and/or not queer so it's often not what I'd most like to read - and also the YA skews more to what an intl audience would consider MG. And then some I have read I just don't like lmao. so I don't know how helpful this is.......but the first things that come to mind, from Māori or Pasifika authors:

Flight of the Fantail by Steph Matuku (she has a few other MG ish ones)

Whiti Hereaka has some YA as well, it's been quite a few years since I read them

Na Viro by Gina Cole I think is adult but I've seen it sorted as YA a couple times and it feels YA-ish?

Charlie Tangaroa & The Creature From The Sea by T K Roxborough is def more on the MG end, I enjoyed it tho!

Dawn Raid by Pauline Smith - haven't read this but keep meaning to, possibly MG-ish

We start things off quickly teeing up this week’s show. We jump right into our chat with The Bloody Mary Fest organizer, Evan Weiss. He lets us know about this growing festival taking place at various times and locations around the country. Evan also tells us about the third annual iteration of the festival here in New Orleans coming Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd and 3rd.

Then, we have our featured interview with celebrity chef Elizabeth Falkner. She was recently in New Orleans giving a talk at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) on reducing food waste. She is an advocate for the issue, and we caught up with her in town to talk about it. This is part of our ongoing “Sustainability Series.”

First up in our chat, we get a bit on Elizabeth’s background as a chef and her culinary journey that included operating spots in both San Francisco and New York. We also talk about her numerous TV appearances and how that has become part of her career, as well.

From there, we get into our main topic – reducing food waste. We discuss the importance of the topic and how food waste, overall, is a not only an economic detriment it is threat to our global environment including contributing to climate change.

Also, we touch on the economic implications and benefits of reducing food waste. Elizabeth shares some ideas on how you can accomplish this at home with some simple steps.

On Another Shot with NOLADrinks, Elizabeth sticks around and we chat about the topic further. This includes more on the importance and approached for reducing food waste in restaurant spaces.

Because the talent collected for Pokemon Masters impresses me, I’m making this masterlist post of voice actors. They are divided into four categories: Fresh and Unestablished (VAs who just surfaced in the past few years and haven’t become noteworthy names at the time of their casting), Fresh and Established (VAs whose careers have spanned the late 2010s and are already well recognized for at least one other major role, usually several), Veteran (VAs whose careers have spanned the late 2000s / early 2010s), and Super Veteran (VAs whose careers have spanned the early 2000s or even earlier). Again, bear in mind this reflects their status when cast for this game - obviously, things change: some Unestablished VAs are now starting to become Established, some Established VAs are reaching Veteran status, and eventually Veteran VAs will be known as Super Veterans. why the hell does elizabeth falkner, an iron chef runner up and a competitor in last year’s tournament of champions get demoted to the wild card bracket while fucking bryan voltaggio who did NOT compete at all last year gets to go straight to the competition? this is sexism!
