Falling through a Gravity Storm and waking up in another world was often a common thing now. After the events which led to the destruction of Heksville, again, and regaining her memories, only to find Heksville destroyed, again. Along with using her own body to create a singularity to seal what made those Storms in the first place... It certainly made life a surprise at every turn. 

Being tossed through one, rather gracelessly, she hit the ground. Falling didn’t affect her anymore, but the shock was quite unpleasant. Sitting up she was greeted with a sight she hadn’t expected to see again. The yell that erupted from her was louder than necessary, at the sight of the one who almost destroyed her home. She barely even noticed the man accompanying her, Kat’s sole focus was on her. Snatching Dusty up, Kat didn’t even get up off the ground, she shifted her gravity so she was on the wall. “What are you doing here?!”

Some thoughts about Yunica

I love Yunica (and Permet too but she’s even more of a mystery) and have been thinking about her a lot recently, so I wanted to collect my thoughts instead of just screaming into the void on Twitter

I wish we could have had a DLC or at least a side mission or two in GR2 about her, maybe something about the 3 years in between the two games that would tell us more about her past and have her addressing some of her issues.... and maybe also learn more about Permet too, the guidebook describes her as “gentle” and “extremely unfit for combat” yet she’s in the MILITARY....... yeah she’s only weapons control in 1, but she starts fighting in 2 and can somehow hold a gun larger than she is in one hand.... I guess she shares Yunica’s same sense of duty so maybe she thought it was a noble cause or something....? And wants to more directly help her girlfriend in 2...?

GR1 and Yunica’s Past

Back to Yunica, how did she become a cyborg in the first place, they don’t bring it up at all.... she can override safeties to increase her output, has repair systems,and the guidebook mentions her having a “gravitino engine” in her body, so her modifications go beyond even just her mechanical legs and arm...

So either she was born without those limbs, lost them in some accident, or willingly (or not) allowed her limbs to be replaced.... that seems a little extreme so I think it’s more likely one of the first two but who knows.... and either way, they went beyond just giving her prosthetic limbs and actually installed this advanced technology inside of her, that you don’t see anywhere else in Hekseville (well Alias had robot clones but Syd is from Eto so....she seems to be the only cyborg) so yeah, that seems like it would be a pretty intense procedure that is going to affect someone beyond just the physical changes me, who loves medical gore most of all would love to know the details

So in short, she was turned into a weapon for the military. There’s one line of Kat’s that stuck with me about her being “more weapon than human”. And her mindset is especially odd even within Jellyfish, her commander still thinks of her as human and tells Kat her real name, it’s Yunica herself that insists that Sea Wasp is the only name she needs, and that she’s only a soldier...

I think it’s very likely her being turned into a cyborg is what brought about this sort of mindset, if I were to guess she was probably already devoted to the military and that’s what led to her agreeing to it, and then being weaponized like that amplified her feelings to such an extreme, even if it was because of an accident I feel like they wouldn’t give such advanced technology to someone not already associated with the military....

I feel like she was probably treated like just a weapon too, obviously not by her commander (he has that one line after he tells Kat her name where he mentions how tough it’s been growing up in such circumstances, but I’m not sure if he means her specific situation or the state of Hekseville in general.... anyway, he cares about her), but I could absolutely see that from D’nelica and his government, he’s a terrible person....

The point is, the military kinda fucked her up and made her into their weapon who will blindly carry out any order.... and I love her dialogue with Kat, especially during her fight.... Kat can see she’s not an inherently bad person, but rightfully calls her out on blind obedience and preoccupation with the military’s honor... and even wonders why she can’t see she’s being used....Yunica mostly brushes her off and gets angry, and I think its interesting how she doesn’t seem to want to think about what they’ll do with her once she’s not needed, like what’s happening with Kat.....

I think the following fight against the Anemone is what starts to change her if only a bit, Kat is a good person so of course she helps Yunica when she’s hurt, and then Yunica begins to accept help, and even calls her “Kat” for once instead of Seacat or Shifter, which is pretty significant coming from her.

Which brings me to Gravity Rush 2. I got the impression she has gotten a bit better from 1. It’s unclear how much she still blindly follows orders, but she doesn’t seem to be constantly on edge like in 1, and even though Kat starts out as an enemy, its merely because she’s working for a man who really is dangerous, and they are able to talk it out. I find it interesting that its Yunica asking Kat to question if she really knows what she’s helping Brahman do (though of course Kat is open to the idea and asks her to explain)

And she’s open to help from the shifters too instead of trying to say its a military operation! You get to fight side by side with her and Permet at multiple points in the game! She still did try and kill Durga, but she seemed to genuinely believe that was their only choice (and doesn’t Kat start to wonder if she’s right too...?) Oh, and she even calls out to Raven and says they need her help in All Fires Burn to Ash!

(Side note- why the hell is Tubeworm (apparently that’s the rebel group name?) still under D’nelica, he’s a horrible person??? Please tell me now that Jellyfish is back and Lisa will most likely be mayor that they’ll be under her....)

I think working together with Kat, and being called out by her at the end of GR1 got her to start thinking about things... and maybe having Permet by her side too? I personally think they’re a couple, and well, having someone that loves her and loving another person is probably good for someone that needs to stop thinking of herself as only a soldier... And its really sweet how much she cares for her, screaming out her name (not her codename!!) when she gets shot down, and completely losing her cool and calling Elektricitie a monster (and then Raven needs to tell her not to let it get to her!)

They’re a good match for each other, they both have a strong sense of duty and are rather serious people, but in contrast to Yunica’s short tempered and rather emotional personality, Permet is calm and gentle. (I would love to know more about Permet though, she really is largely a mystery....)

Tldr:

Yunica being turned into some sort of military weapon probably fucked her up a bit

She seems to have gotten a bit better in GR2

She and Permet are definitely together and they’re good for each other
