a delightful giggle came from her own mouth as she felt his soft breath upon her facial features peppering kisses on her skin." yes, embroidered coats or a shirt to match your beautiful eyes. not like Tylin liked to dressed Mat. Did he ever tell you - perhaps it is for the best if I don't tell you he might be cross that I did." a knowing smile donned her lips. her smile wavered a little, "it's been so tiring, Rand." the facade of queen Elayne Trakand vanished easily with him which she was grateful for. He was her love and he would understand, he always did. "Lessons? perhaps I have advice for you that I should apply to myself as well. Have you been sleeping lately?"
Surprise entered his tone of voice then. "You're going to buy me something?" He supposed that would be far better than anyone else buying his clothes for him, all things that he hardly wore. "I suppose that I should tell you that I would treasure what you buy me with my whole heart."
A light laugh came from him as he brushed soft kisses to the side of her neck and face, his fingers toying with the ends of her curls. He always wondered what it would be like to simply return to his life before, Emond's Field, and his father, before he had been the Dragon. Yet that would mean that he wouldn't have this, he wouldn't have her. "As you would well know." He answered softly before he drew back to look into those blue eyes of hers. "But you do it with such dignity that maybe I've come here to see whether or not you have anymore lessons for your former student?"

Yea, hey, it¨s time for you to resume the Wheel of Time. The last one and a half books will take quite some time as it is, and you¨ve had you rest! Don¨t forget it entirely! What does Mat's letter to Elayne say? (I don¨t mean to be impertinent, and now I accidentally on purpose used ¨ instead of ', go and kill me for it.)
this is weirdly aggressive for an ask that doesn't mean to be impertinent; I know tone is hard to convey over anonymous messages but I am also sometimes extremely petty and every time I get a message like this I mentally delay my intent to resume WoT by a minimum of 6-8 weeks.

@windtold
there wasn’t much that he could do at this point. he felt shaken and rattled. he knew that he shouldn’t be lingering on this, not when The Last Battle was already rearing its head, quite wildly. all the of the forces were preparing to leave. soldiers were being armed. The Wolf Guard, the armies of Ghealdan, Dragonsworn, Aes Sedai, Aiel, Andor, Borderlanders, and even the Seanchan! it seemed like the entire world had answered humanity’s call, waiting for Rand al’Thor to advance to Shayol Ghul and face The Dark One. Galad had spent the previous night in forced prayer, sweat beading on his forehead as he tried desperately not to think of what had happened when he had felt something like a spark rushing through him. a spark, a rush of life, creating there at the center of the Void, marring his thoughts entirely. he had lived near to Aes Sedai nearly his entire life and he knew what it meant. the spark. Saidin. something bitter and roiling.
a sickness threads through him at the thought and he thought to go to Elayne although his sister, heavy with child, seemed far too busy. Perrin Aybara had left also and so who would he talk to? he could not talk to any of the Children, he cannot imagine the horror that they would feel once they realized that their Captain Commander feared that he might have located something of the Source, of Saidin inside of him. he didn’t loathe and despise the Aes Sedai - at least not as much as the rest of the Children - but a male Channeler? the stigma remained and it rolled sickenly through him.
he had heard tell of one Aes Sedai who would be easy on those who had questions, who needed words of wisdom. the Wisdom herself, from The Two Rivers, Nynaeve al’Meara. swallowing the thought, the anxiety that rushed through him he donned simple clothes, a simple cloak, and then headed off towards where he would find her. Elayne had said in passing that she would be giving aid to those who would need it. “ Nynaeve Sedai? “ he called out softly, hands somewhat antsy at his sides, regarding her carefully. she was young, but there was a knowing in her eyes that he found interesting. “ might I have a word? “ could she sense his nerves? the sweat beaded on his skin? light save him, what would she think of him? what would happen to him now?

Raje Judkins answered some questions about the show. Filming spoilers for the show below:
Q: What part of the books should you be caught up on for the first season?
A: Depends on if you like to read something before you watch it or not.
Q: What are you finding most challenging about going from book to screen? A: The hardest thing is the physicality of production. In the first book alone they go to more than 20 villages and cities. To try to do that is physically impossible for the show, so most of the work we don in the room is geographical, figuring how to condense the story and move it through places we can physically create.
Q: Do you have a favorite chapter from the whole saga? Mine is Veins of Gold. A: So many. But Honey in the Tea is the one off the top of my head.
Q: We can’t wait to see Elayne, Aviendha and Min
A: Me either. Three of my favorites.
Q: Has any post-production work begun or does that not start until filming is completed?
A: Nope! We do it simultaneously. Before the corona hit, I was prepping 2 episodes, shooting 2 episodes, in post on 4 episodes and writing Season 2 simultaneously :-0
Q: Will there be a soundtrack? Who’s the composer? A: Of course! David Buckley. Plus a few incredible musical guests we’ve already had.
Q: Are Min/Elayne in season 1? A: The Wheel weaves as the wheel wills
Q: Are you going to merge Min and Elayne? A: Hell no
Q: First moment you were speechless on set? A: First time walking into Emond’s Field with my mom
Q: Is mat fluent in the old tongue yet? A: We’ve had a couple cast members speak in it already and they NAILED IT
Q: Which character has your favorite costume so far? A: Ooo this is tough. Probably Geofram Bornhald.
Q: How is the cast and crew weathering the pandemic? A: Our team in Prague did an amazing job of getting everyone out and keeping them safe. And now everyone’s home and we all live on Instagram.
Q: Who is your favorite Forsaken? A: Ahhh. I love the ladies. Graendal, Lanfear, Moghedien. And Ishamael holds a special place in my heart the more time I spend with him
Q: What’s been your favourite shooting location so far? A: Slovenia! Spectacular stuff there
Q: Yes or no. Have you had to make any cuts be it a scene or character, that has been painful for you? A: Yes.
Q: How are you planning to handle the visualization of the weaves? Any little tidbits? A: We are trying to stay as true to the books as possible. I’ve been giving a bunch of VFX folks long diatribes about channeling, weaves, threads, earth vs. air, etc and they early stuff has started coming in. It looks FUCKING AWESOME. I screamed when Rosamund started channeling
Q: Similar to Them performing in an old Inn, what other iconic moment filmed stands out to u? A: Rand and Tam walking through the Westwood
Q: Blink twice if Min is in season 1. A: 😉😉
Q: Will Jeff Probst be one of the Aiel? Can you make some calls? A: If he dyes his hair red 😉
Q: Which WOT book title best describes your self isolation experience? A: A Memory of Light…
Q: Can we expect a trailer for the show anytime soon? A: Probably not for a long while sadly.
Q: Can you guys do a big WoT Wed announcement during the hiatus to keep all us fans hyped instead of al A: Yea! It would cheer us all up and we have some fun news
Q: Is Lan going to be as much or an absolute stud in the show as he is in the books? A: You’ve seen @danielhenney right?
Q: If you were an Aes Sedai, what Ajah would you choose? A: Such a good question. They all have merits but GREEN for the win. If only to hang with @priyankabose20
Q: Will we have to wait till season 2 to see any Aiel? (Other than Rand)
A: Nope. And the one you see will shock you. Hah. Amazon shouldn’t let me be on here when I’ve been cooped up for a week.
Q: RJ writes a lot of internal headspace stuff. What’s 1 hint on how the show will handle that? A: That’s the biggest difficulty of any novel adaptation. Figuring out how to make the internal monologue come out clearly to the audience. A lot of the changes we make and stories we tell differently are designed to serve exactly that purpose – showing you what those characters internal monologues from the book are without them just saying it out loud in exposition
Q: Are you using taller actors to portray the Aiel, or camera trickery? A: Trying to get tall folks. But I’m less concerned with height and more concerned with acting ability.
Q: Since JordanCon was cancelled, can we maybe get an extra treat next month? A: Sure! What do you want?
Q: Do you have a favorite Wise One? A: Avi
Q: How many trollocs do I have to take out to become a writing assistant? A: Violence is never the answer
Q: What would you say the CGI to practical ratio is going to be? A: Tring to do as much in camera as we possibly can!
Q: How are you handling sword forms and their names? A: We have a for real sword master on the show who walks into every room and tests out everything as a weapon. He could most definitely kill me with any item in my office.
Q: How are the horses on set? Is Mandarb spectacular? A: They are so great. Honestly I love our horses. Mandarb and Aldieb are downright sexy
Q: When will we get more casting announcements to hold us over? A: I’ll try to get them to put out something soon. A lot of folks in all departments are affected by the state of the world right now though, so I can’t promise a timeline
Q: will we see the prologue from the Eye of the World on screen in season 1 A: You will hear that phrase
Q: What has been your favorite set so far? A: Fal Dara!
Q: Please tell me you’ve cut Narg!! A: Never!!
Q To what extent has Harriet McDougal been involved with the project? A: She’s a consulting producer so she’s been out to Prague to the sets and reads all the scripts and sends me her notes on them. She and Maria are hugely helpful for maintaining the truth of the series and always keep me honest when it comes to things that change too much
Q: Is any aspect of the show still in development, or has it all stalled because of the virus? A: A lot can be done virtually! I’m still doing VFX, editing and the Season Two Virtual Writers Room! And I can do it all in pajamas
Q: Will min, elayne, and avienda have to be combined into a single character?
A: Girl you crazy. I’m not going to combine huge characters like that. Maybe sometimes a minor character folded into a more major one to make better use of our cast but nothing nutso
Q: RJ created 1000’s of character. Given that did you feel the need to create new characters? A: Anyone “new” is inspired by characters in the books or a number of characters combined. If we paid to cast all speaking roles in the book we could only afford to have a radio play
Q: So far, what is your favorite prop in the show? A: Great Serpent Ring. We all want one.
Q: Will Loial portray the Ogier species, or will he be humanised for screen? A: He’s an Ogier!
Q: How involved, if involved at all, is Sanderson in the writers room? A: Brandon is hugely helpful. I talked to him before we started Season Two while he was in Prague to get advice and he reads all the scripts and gives notes. He’s incredibly thoughtful and understands the process of adaptation and what’s required from it. I feel so lucky to have him involved. I would have him do more if I could make him!
Q: What words of hope would you offer a fan afraid that the show will cut out a lot of content? A: I genuinely think we are cutting less than most people think. When I see people ask questions like “are you cutting Min?” It blows my mind. I don’t know how you do an adaptation without some of these characters. I think it’ll be more of the smaller stories you’ll miss. We can’t have Rand and May (sic) travel to many many inns on their travels across the countryside for instance. It’s just not producible. So that will be more of what you miss I think, and the books always exist to read for that 🙂
Q: I think Bella is such an important character, will the same horse play bella through the series A: We’ve already had to have two Belas. It turns out a horse for riding on film is not the same as a horse for pulling a cart and SHE MUST DO BOTH
Q: Can you please make sure you do a great job? Book are so great A: This is are a really good idea
Q: Now you’ve met them, settle the score: who’s better with women? Rand, Mat or Perrin? A: I think they’d all say it’s the other
Q: Will the show be understandable for those who didn’t read the books? A: That’s the idea. If there are little things they don’t get though, luckily google exists
Q: Who is your favorite Aes Sedai in the books? And you can’t say Moiraine/Siuan or the Wonder Girls A: So many rules. I honestly love all of them though (except Galina that bitch) Alanna Liandrin and Verin are probably my Top 3. And Siuan! There’s too many I love. Sheriam! Pevara!

“Payday”: Rip Torn’s finest hour
In honor of the late Rip Torn, a story about a great performance, originally published by Trunkworthy. **********
As a onetime disc jockey in what was euphemistically referred to as a “medium-sized market,” I can testify to the verisimilitude of a telling scene in Daryl Duke’s remarkable 1973 drama Payday.
In the sequence, the film’s anti-hero, third-tier country singer Maury Dann (Rip Torn), stops by Montgomery, Alabama, radio station WHHY to pay an obligatory visit to DJ Bob Dickey (Earl Trigg). Looking to boost his airplay, Dann arrives bearing an insincere smile, a box filled with quail he has shot and a fifth of Wild Turkey, and a couple of copies of his LP Payday. He exchanges well-rehearsed on-air pleasantries about the jock’s family. Unctuous good ol’ boy Dickey braces the reluctant Maury to appear at a local show he’s promoting; barely maintaining his cool, the enraged musician parries the announcer’s every insistent thrust.
As penned by the wildly underrated novelist Don Carpenter, who also co-produced the feature, this sharply-observed scene is right on the money in its depiction of the unspoken, hackle-raising negotiations that take place among music biz bottom-feeders. Like the rest of the film, it’s as vivid and lingering as the smell of cheap perfume and Tiparillo smoke clinging to a polyester cowboy shirt.
Shot for less than $800,000 and indifferently distributed, Payday never had a chance at the box office; its tough, uncompromising, and hyper-realistic depiction of country music’s underbelly mitigated against widespread popular acceptance. Two years later, Robert Altman would use country for his massive canvas in Nashville and garnered universal acclaim. However, by sticking to the grass roots and driving the back routes of the music, Payday offered a fiercely-drawn character study that plays truer and deeper today than its award-winning successor.
Much of the picture’s considerable power derives from the central performance of Rip Torn, who plays a country musician quite unlike the standard cinematic issue. Tearjerking, Oscar-winning performances like those by Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies or Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart are the norm; the repentant alcoholic country outlaw brought back to life by the love of a good woman has become the prevailing movie cliché. Torn’s Maury is something else again: a raging, manipulative, and extremely dangerous sociopath who will trample anyone in his selfish pursuit of pleasure. It’s a testament to the actor’s skill that this outrageous, repellant figure sustains not only our fascination, but even enlists a bit of our sympathy.
Payday begins with Maury crooning his song “Country Girl” – written, like most of the film’s tunes, by Shel Silverstein, whose “A Boy Named Sue” became Johnny Cash’s biggest hit in 1969 – for the frowsy patrons of a roadhouse dive called Mr. Ed’s. It follows the singer’s life over the course of the next 36 hours, during which he veers toward a show in Birmingham in a cowhide-upholstered Cadillac, in the company of his devoted driver (Cliff Emmich), his blowsy girlfriend (Ahna Capri), and a dim-witted aspiring groupie (Elayne Heilveil). Along the way, he chugs bourbon, gobbles pills, commits multiple infidelities, fires his handgun, torments his drug-addicted mother and bitter ex-wife, sloughs off his most intimate relationships, and offhandedly commits a shocking crime. He even finds time to write a song. He’s a satanic Hank Williams on a terminal hellride.
It’s a scorched-earth turn by Torn, who today is better known for his character roles in the Men in Black series and TV’s The Larry Sanders Show. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, he was a formidable (albeit oddball) leading man, and his work here snaps your head back. But he is more than matched by some of the lesser-known supporting players, who deftly embody damaged small-town souls grasping at the country dream. The highlight of the film may be a quiet, overwhelmingly affecting scene between Emmich and Heilveil; the conversation is about making omelets and the deficiencies of Teflon-coated pans, but it’s really about the vacuity of their lives. Here, screenwriter Carpenter seems to be saying, are the people that country songs are written about.

Elayn woke to find Serana gone, which did not surprise her. Their bond would have alerted her if something was wrong, and when she looked outside, she saw it was the perfect day for her mistress to go and find her own clues to the mystery of the cathedral. To that end, after she got some food in her belly, she would go poking around herself. Once she ate, she donned her cloak and went out into the drizzling rain.
Elayn heard a clock strike twelve just as she rounded the corner to the cathedral. The great building loomed menacingly in a way that the university had not, despite being bigger. Steeling herself, she went inside.
It was Saturday, which seemed to mean that the pew-filled nave was also full of people. Not so many as she would assume there would be during a service, and they were certainly moving around a lot more than she would expect. It was the perfect cover for her to slip to the back of the room where steps led up and down, and a few doors led to other parts of the cathedral. She went through one, following the faint scent of sticky sweetness that children usually carried.
But as she got closer, she realized some of that sweetness was sickly. It grew stronger as she drew closer to what she assumed was the orphanage. There was not much in the way of noises she would expect from a place full of children.

Take my book, please! Staff favorite holiday gift book ‘A Small Book of Jewish Comedians’ releases this week from @reelartpress In 1978, @time magazine estimated that around 80 percent of professional American comics were Jewish, and Jewish humor remains a foundation stone of American popular culture and humor. This book is not intended as a definitive tome but is instead a joyful and irreverent celebration of great photography and some of the greatest one-liners of the 20th century, ripe in satire, anecdote, self-deprecation and irony. Photos of more than 70 comedians are accompanied by one-liners such as: “Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” (Groucho Marx) and “It was a Jewish porno film … one minute of sex and nine minutes of guilt.” (Joan Rivers). The Punch Line and The Pit Bull
Bobby Slayton: (Picks Up Phone) You're 3 minutes late. It's 2:03. If you're 3 minutes late every day, eventually that's over 20 minutes late a week which is over 1,000 minutes a year that you wasted of my time. I'm a busy guy. I don't have time to waste.
That's actually the abbreviated version of how the infamously sharp-tongued comedian answered the phone. There was no attempt at a compulsory greeting. He was immediately (and hilariously) ranting, raving and calling me out on my tardiness. Slayton is one of the few comics that was both around at Punch Line's inception in 1978, and who has routinely performed here yearly since. Taking his lead, I didn't even attempt to slow things down and introduce myself. I just played along...
Ronn Vigh: So, is this why you're known as "The Pitbull of Comedy?"
BS: Well, Alex Bennett came up with that. He was a big SF radio guy in the 80s and 90s. He really was the first guy in the country to have comics on the radio and I was the first guy. Then one day, I lost the radio station a big account they had with McDonalds because I made an innocuous little joke about them. Who even knows what it was. That was when Bennett told me, "Slayton, you're like a pitbull. You bite the hand that feeds you." It just stuck.
RV: And, so you've been--------
BS: I don't really like it anymore. I told my people to take it off my website. So, what are we doing here? What's this for anyway?
RV: Well, this is for Punch Line San Francisco's comedy blog. Since you're hosting our 40th anniversary celebration shows, I really wanted to get the chance to talk to you comic-to-comic and hear about the early days of our beloved club and how things have progressed or regressed over the last 40 years.
BS: Yea, well when it started, the place was a real dump! There was a big club just next door - The Old Waldorf. Where the Punch Line is now was kind of the back stage area when there was a show. It was a beat up shitty bar with a big pool table. One Embarcadero wasn't even built yet, there wasn't action downtown, it was pretty dead. Jon Fox started doing comedy there first and he used me a lot and Bruce Balm, George Wallace, Elayne Boosler, we were all coming up and around then.... but it wasn't a nice place. I was kind of embarrassed.
RV: We're you simply living in the moment and doing gigs at the club because they were available to you? Or, did you recognize early on that the place was a diamond in the rough?
BS: Yea.... I had started doing comedy about a year before that and was kind of the house MC. I was so embarrassed by the joint. There were plastic sheets nailed to the ceiling, old beat up couches with nails coming out of the side, the microphone was mounted from the ceiling and would fall down during the show. The place was a fucking wreck. The guy running the place was such a cheap fuck. So, I went out and bought movie posters, posters of old time comics and tried to make it look decent. When Bill Graham took it over, he finally put some money into it.
RV: I technically started comedy in New York. However, Punch Line has been highly influential in my development as a comic during the 2000's. It sounds like it was both the infancy of your career and the club when you were performing here regularly. How do you think it has influenced your career?
BS: When Old Waldorf was next door, they were paying like 25 or 50 dollars a set at both places and Dana Carvey, Kevin Pollak and I worked the rooms the most. You would go up before the band, then over to the Punch Line and back to the band and then back to the club for the late show. By the last show, between the booze and probably the coke too, I'd be on my ninth set and forgot what the hell I talked about already. But, that's what got me good.... getting a lot of stage time. It was kill or be killed. It was really very good training!
RV: So, your career has spanned 4 decades. Being the "Pitbull of Comedy" that you are, have you found it harder or easier to do your act in more recent years?
BS: It's really much harder now. You think at this point audiences would be better trained but the attention span of millennials is that of a fucking fly.
RV: Yes but with the current political and social climate, do you think people tend to have more knee-jerk reactions rather than just listening to the material as a whole?
BS: All they hear are buzzwords. Holocaust. Autism. AIDS. Then they are quick to judge and get all caught up in a fucking bandwagon. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't name any of The Beatles then you should be dead. And then the millennials will complain, "Oh well The Beatles were before my time." It's like fuck you! George Washington was before my time and I still know that he's on the fucking one dollar bill.
RV: Do you think social media and sites like YouTube have ruined the live stand-up comedy experience?
BS: I never liked social media. I tweet once a week and I lose followers once a week. I don't give a shit anymore. The whole game has changed. You had guys like (Don) Rickles and dozens of comics in the 60s who would go on stage in 3 or 4 piece suits, jacket and ties... Now it wouldn't even matter. Everyone is a slob, in dirty shorts. Flip flops. It's disgusting now. It was a different time, a different era.
RV: In all 40 years, what are your best memories of performing at Punch Line?
BS: Robin Williams stopping by all the time and a lot of hot waitresses.
RV: I've heard stories of Robin popping in a lot. Though, I've also heard this club referred to as "The House That Bobby Built."
BS: You know where that comes from, right?
RV: Um. (Long Pause) I'm afraid to tell you no.
BS: Didn't you say you were from the fucking East Coast? It comes from Babe Ruth. Yankee Stadium. The house that Ruth built. Listen, I don't know if I contributed that much to the long term success. I was certainly a part of it and so was Dana Carvey, Kevin Pollak, Jon Fox, Bill Graham. It really was a big group effort.
It will certainly be a group effort again as we celebrate our 40th anniversary throughout October. Bobby Slayton is coming back to MC a series of shows featuring comics that have helped shape our club throughout its 40 years of serving up live comedy.
Bobby Slayton & Friends 40th Anniversary Celebration At Punch Line San Francisco on Oct 11, 12, 13. One show Thursday. 2 Shows on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $25 - $30.

Moonlight (2017) Review
Moonlight (2017) shines its melancholy light on a life in three acts. #Review
Beautifully structured and elegantly restrained, Barry Jenkins’ deceptively simple three act coming of age drama packs a powerful emotional punch as we follow Chiron, a disaffected young black man growing up and struggling with his identity and sexuality in suburban Miami. Throughout each of the acts, assaying a different period of Chiron’s life, we’re treated to the raw cruelty of a life…
