Valheim Progress Once More
We are trying not to speed run our Valheim experience, but there is also very much a tension that drives us forward to unlock the next thing.  So we got out there quickly to fight Eikthyr on our first weekend out because we wanted the staghorn picks so we could start mining copper and tin to create bronze and some of the nice things that brings. Given some of our past mis-adventures… I remember…

POKEDDEXY DAY 29: SCARIEST
Eikthyr [O] Serious, takes plenty of siestas! An ever-living lord who once subdued his best friend from a terrible rampage. Out of pity, he gives some of his eternal life force to his friend to keep him from converting back into a cocoon, but never more than that.
my toxic yaoi ship 😈 eik barely gives vedr lifeforce so he's mostly a zombie with no will, it's a terrible power imbalance and eik is heralded as a hero for it while vedr is painted as a calamity who must be kept useless.. his cruelty is scary! i love it

I started playing Valheim again (and just beat Eikthyr, woohoo!) and while I did just get stuck behind some stairs in the Black Forest, I think I'm doing pretty well after not playing - especially playing by myself this time as opposed to with friends like I usually do/did. I also figured out how to tame the piggies.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #475
In light of the upcoming trip to Oregon, I decided to mostly rest today. The weather won't stop being weird in our area until Wednesday, and so, on that morning, we will wake before the sun comes up, fill the plane with the last of the things we need, and head out.
I gathered up the few clothes I'm gonna bring; two pairs of pants, three shirts, a couple cardigans, and four sets of socks and undies, and a towel. I'm gonna bring my winter coat, too, just in case it gets cold. Most likely, we'll be able to make use of a hotel washing machine, somewheres. It'll be all right.
I couldn't really think of what else to do, so I played Valheim. I wanted to be able to mine for minerals and break rocks, so I fought this goth punk rocker reindeer named Eikthyr so I could make a pickaxe from a piece of his antlers:
youtube
So then, I went to the nearby Black forest to look for copper deposits, and I found one. I found it, and then I dug up the ground around it to expose the whole thing:
Tumblr media
...Yeah. Copper deposits are HUGE. It's tempting to assume that there's only the surface-level stuff present, because of the way it breaks. But if you just dig around the outline of the deposit and keep going down when it stops expanding outwards, you'll see that they go down much further than you think.
...So far, in fact, that once I had extracted the entirety of the deposit (I'm definitely not gonna need any more copper ore anytime soon...), I was left with a pretty sizeable hole in the ground. I decided to neaten it up, for later (much later...) use as a place in which to tame wolves:
Tumblr media
The thing is, wolves have such high damage that they can't be contained in ordinary fences while they're acclimating, and they can jump, too, so really the only thing for it is to dig a big pit in the ground, lure them in, and fill up the exit on your way out. Or else find some way to knock them in there. Conveniently, extracting the copper left me with a perfectly-sized pit (with only slight modifications!) in which to tame wolves, later (much later!). Score!
I had gone through some old crypts in the Black Forest to snag up some stuff called Surtling Cores in order to make a charcoal kiln and a smelter. You need a smelter to turn the copper ore into copper bars, and the smelter needs charcoal to work. One gets charcoal by putting wood into the charcoal kiln; it's very simple!
Tumblr media
Tin can be found near the water in Black Forest biomes, so I went and snagged some of that, too. If you have two copper bars and a tin bar, you can make a bronze bar, which you can then use to make better gear, and then upgrade it; hopefully I'm well on my way to defeating The Elder, who is somewhere in the Black Forest; I just gotta upgrade my weapons so I can slay a troll; they drop things that will allow me to make better armor than what I currently have.
J played with me for a little while during the evening, which was pretty rad! He carried the copper I got from the deposit back to our base where the smelter is, which was super helpful! With this much copper, I should be able to make and upgrade gear for him, too! And then maybe he can help me take down The Elder. I guess we'll see.
Oh, and! I have a lot more piggies now! Though I still haven't found any wild ones with rarity stars...
Tumblr media
Aside from that, I found some carrot seeds in the Black Forest and planted them! I also found some bees and made some hives so I can have reliable access to honey! The number of recipes I can make has expanded, and now I can make tasty soups that will give my lovely character very nice boosts to his hit points and stamina!
Tumblr media
...And... admittedly... my character is based off of you, so... it's really nice to imagine you being able to eat a nourishing soup that you made with your own hands.
...I really wish you could play this game with us. I think you really would like it a lot. It's such a great game. And you know? It's still not even finished yet! So it's only going to get better and better from here!
I think I'm gonna stop writing now in favor of going to sleep; though it's only midnight (“only” an hour past my bedtime, I know... I know...), for some reason, I'm falling asleep as I'm writing this, so I'm gonna take it as a sign that I really do need to go to bed.
...Tomorrow's letter will be early because I need to make sure I go to bed at a reasonable hour tomorrow. I'm not really sure what I'm gonna write about, yet, but I'm sure I'll think of something; I always do.
...I wish you could write back to me, though. And like... ask me questions. Then, for sure, writing a reply would be super easy, hahaha...
I love you so much, and... I hope you're okay out there, wherever it is that you are. I hope you're staying safe. I hope... I hope you're eating nice soups and staying out of trouble.
...Come home soon, okay? To a place where you can relax with good people and play a nice game. We miss you.
'Til soon.
Your friend, Lumine

Valheim: empty seed
Just discovered there's such a thing as an empty seed in Valheim, and it's actually pretty good - especially if you don't mind sailing.
Tumblr media
After defeating Eikthyr (altar in a spitting distance from spawn) you can hug the west coast and brave just a thin(ish) strip of black forest for a swamp demo where you just might get some hoe iron (sadly no crypts, but oozers should still spawn at night), and bloodbags for early fenris armor run (don't forget to destroy doors and braziers for metal), which will make fighting Elder funny. If you got enough iron for a pickaxe, you're easily in a silver tier before the second boss. His island also hosts dwarf spawners, if you forgot the seeds, a possible honey source if you left your beehives at home, more cores and forest metals for smelting, and waters around it may get you a harpoon or a knife. Not a bad place for a transit base.
Tumblr media
From there it depends on your playstyle. The continent above Elder island has two maypoles (the closest ice cave also has fish, and just a stone throw east is a draugr village), easy swamps, Hildir, Moder and just a taste of plains with a quick hit-and-swim-away Bonemass. You get totems from pole continent, hugging the coastline sailing south from Bonemass or whichever place you want to fight Yagluth. There's two Queens not far from each other (the second one is just above "share seed" button if you want extra trophy)
Tumblr media
If you prefer mid game be more struggle and epic prep, or just for traders to both be on the same continent, sail south. Moder's here, but Bonemass and plains everywhere will give you more headache:
Tumblr media
From there it's a long sail to Yagluth and even longer to Queen, but the island south of Traders' Island is a great place for pre-Ashlands - four useful biomes and hot tub water so close you can fish steam serpents almost from your front yard pier. Good for early fancy stone stuff, too:
Tumblr media
Ashlands are solid. Thirteen fortresses on middle island, first one quite close to dwarven refuge for an easier start. More dwarven camps on various shores, and Fader also settled close to water if you need to make a sail of shame:
Tumblr media
Decent flametal spires for all the lovely builder freaks (or people very unlucky with fortress loot RNG):
Tumblr media
And, just for fun, a shot of morgen caves (look how regular they are!):
Tumblr media
Dunno if it makes for a fun immersive run, but certainly it has good potential for a regular one.

Eikthyr, The Saarkyr King
Founder of the Sunless Kingdom, Eikthyr is a common Saarkyr born within a forgotten tribe somewhere in the southern continent of Sari-Vas.
The first thing noticeable about him is that he doesn't act like royalty whatsoever, his title coming solely from his position as the leader of any and all who wished to revolutionize against traditions for a more developed and peaceful lifestyle. Few know what pushed him to become such an overachiever who not only pushed for the further development of their stagnated culture, but also defied his entire kind in doing so, successfully establishing a small kingdom near the sea with great effort.
To aid in this, he also practiced his own magical skills to the point of matching that of a dragons' skills in the arcane, if not even slightly above the draconic average.
Everything he's done and achieved has been for the benefit of his people, ever-intent on following a dogma of peace without the need for bloodshed.
He is known as a kind and patient man, with a lot of experience of the world under his belt, who refuses to let whatever bad situations he's gone through change him in any way, always welcoming and helpful of any who need either Eikthyr the King, or Eikthyr the friendly Saarkyr.
Despite his positive and cheerful personality, a deep sadness overshadows his eyes, as if he had suffered more than one major loss in his life and wasn't able to move onwards.
[Story Spoilers]
||He is the father of both Altáir and Carina, whom, unbeknownst to him, survived the kidnapping by their caretaker the day of their hatching. To this day he believes they were stillborn, and that Aurora died during the fall of Celestial Sanctum. While Aurora is missing, the two young Saarkyr are alive and well, each in a corner of the world, carving their path with the help of those they've met through their lives.||

Finding an Infested Mine in Valheim at Last!
Why am I excited about finding an infested mine?  because there is no gear advancement in the Mistlands without finding one.  Or several, more likely. Valheim has always gated its gear progression behind some level of resource harvesting progression that is generally unlocked by slaying the boss of the previous biome.  You can’t mine any metal until you slay Eikthyr, for example, or unlock sunken…

A GUIDE TO EIKTHYR
youtube
Goodmorrow Vikings, let’s chat about Eikthyr, the first of Valheim’s many bosses. Eikthyr is the Meadow Forsaken, Valheim’s term for bosses, an abnormally large stag with an affinity for lightning. He does three very animated attacks.
The first is a melee attack that only happens when in close range of him. For this attack he will bow his head and try to ram you with his antlers. Block with a tower shield or dodge away from this. There will be times where he will charge you with this attack, so be wary.
For the last two attacks the animations can be similar and both deal 15 damage with his lightning affinity. One is an AoE attack that creates a large bubble around Eikthyr. The other is a lightning bolt shot from the Deer’s antlers. In both Eikthyr will charge up on his hind legs and slam his hooves back into the ground for the attack. The difference is that for the long range lightning attack he will first run away beforehand.
The best way to beat Eikthyr is to simply kite him around while shooting him from afar with arrows. Cutting down a trees in the area so that Eikthyr has to run around them to get to you is a great way to help with this. Prepare two bows and lots of arrows for the fight. You can also build a tower structure to break the AI, however I don’t think that’s needed because he’s a generally basic encounter.
PREP
That is the Eikthyr fight at its base so let’s now talk about how to prepare for the fight. Eikthyr’s summoning circle can be found by interacting with the vegvisir at the sacrificial circle where we are dropped in. Hugin the crow will make sure you interact with it by appearing above it. The vegvisir will show you the closest spawning location for the forsaken, remember that for later bosses.
To summon him at this place you’ll need two deer trophies dropped from hunted deer. This can probably be the trickiest part of preparations since deer will run away if you get too close and your stamina at low levels isn’t high enough to chase them. To kill them you’ll need to make a crude bow with 10 wood and 8 leather. Wood can be found easily by chopping down trees and the leather is acquired by killing boars. Boar are much easier to kill than deer, use the axe you made to cut down trees to farm them.
GEAR & FOOD
Eikthyr is best fought with a bow, however he can be fought with any of the weapons that you have at your disposal. If you do fight him with a bow, consider setting up a workbench nearby with a roof so you can mend your bow or make two so that you aren’t left without a weapon. For melee enjoyers I recommend you prepare a tower shield so that you can block his attacks. It will slow you how but the added protection can be worth it.
For gear, rags will work just fine for the fight. Make yourself pants with hide dropped from boars. Personally, I prefer this method because deerskin Leather armor doesn’t offer you much more protection versus the rags and the costs can be pricey. Since you upgrade from meadow gear quickly after you’ve unlocked resources in the black forest it’s better to save the materials for gear that will last longer and be more protection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Food can vary. The best in slot food will be Cooked Deer Meat, Cooked Boar meat, and honey.
Honey can be dropped from beehives and farmed using a bee to build your own at your base. They are found in abandoned houses throughout the meadows. The best way to get them is to shoot them down with an arrow, however if you find one before you’ve made a bow you can simply put down a workbench and break the structure that’s holding it up. Honey is a resource that is useful throughout the game, so start a farm early and prosper! If you aren’t able to find a beehive you can substitute honey with raspberries.
The final thing that you’ll need before the fight is the rested buff. This is the most OP buff in the game that increases as you progress through the game. Get into the habit of making sure you have the rested bonus so you always have that +50% health and stamina regen along with the +50% xp gain. During fights this can be a life or death difference.
FOR ON SCREEN:
Here is a complete list of the things you’ll want to have prepared before the fight:
Weapon (depending on how you want to fight the boss, I’d recommend making sure you have a tower shield if you want to go for a melee weapon.)
Gear (I generally don’t make more than the base rags from leather scraps to save deer hide for later crafting but it depends on how you feel)
Food
Cooked Deer Meat (Gives you 35 health, 12 stamina)
Cooked Boar Meat (30 health, 10 stamina)
And honey (8 health, 35 stamina)
If you weren’t able to locate a beehive then raspberries would be the next best thing with 7 health and 20 stamina.
Rested buff (this is important! You only need a few minutes of a rested buff so make sure you get it)
With all your preparations done you’re ready to take on Eikthyr and get the sweet rewards of victory. Make sure you hang his head as a sacrifice to odin and craft up your new antler pickaxe before you head into the black forest to continue your journey to valhalla.
