Pumpkin Island Light, Eggemoggin Reach, Little Deer Isle, Maine. Keeper Charles Leroy Babson was shot during the Civil War, in the Battle of Fredericksburg. While in hospital, he was pronounced dead. Though thanks to a nurse who noticed him move a finger, he was revived by a doctor, and ultimately lost a leg. From 1870-1902 Babson served as keeper of Pumpkin Island Light with the aid of a cane.

FLEKKERØY, a Norwegian pilot cutter built in 1936, crossed the North Atlantic, via Iceland and Greenland, during the summer of 2015. She arrived in Maine late in December that year and continued her cruise right through the winter. She is shown here on Eggemoggin Reach in summer 2016; the red stripe on her mainsail indicates her original profession of pilot boat.

For $3.8 million, a dreamy, castle-like coastal escape in Maine
Megan Johnson — Globe correspondent
August 15, 2021 3:00 pm
It’s not every day you see a castle on the coast of Maine on the market. But that’s exactly what you’ll find at “High Head,” a 30-acre estate in Brooklin. Consisting of two large homes and a small cabin, the estate is listed for the first time for $3,800,000.
Located up a driveway that measures three-quarters of a mile, the estate at 158 High Head Dr. was built in 1937 by Alan Bemis, a physicist and professor at MIT. He managed to capture the construction on video, a rarity at the time. Today the whimsical houses remain nearly identical to when they were built, boasting superior craftsmanship.
The first house, known as the “Children’s House,” is a Nordic-inspired property with six bedrooms. Measuring approximately 3,700 square feet, the house has a grand dining room with a large fireplace that’s ideal for family gatherings.
. —Dean Tyler
The second house is a granite castle-like structure tucked on the waterfront cliffs. Known as “The Tower House,” the 2,300-square-foot space focuses on a great room with sky-high beamed ceilings and a balcony for a band. Just a few steps down leads to a room with extraordinary views of the water through expansive windows. The building also has one bedroom, a dressing room, and a beautiful screened-in porch. There is also an additional bathroom and a curved stairway that leads to the highest point of the tower. Much of the furniture is what was built for the original home in 1937.
. —Dean Tyler
In addition to the two main houses, there is a small cabin on the property that measures around 300 square feet. It features small built-in bunk beds, reminiscent of a train car. A pathway leads down to the dock, which provides deepwater access on Eggemoggin Reach.
The original open three-car garage, a post-and-beam structure, is still intact, as well as a boathouse that can store three additional vehicles.
While there is a conservation easement that protects the property, there is enough space for an additional building to be constructed for use year-round, said Jill Knowles of the Christopher Group, the broker on the listing.
“The two cottages really can’t be winterized because it would destroy the character, but somebody could do something a lot more contemporary,” said Knowles.
John Macone, grandson of Alan Bemis, has served as a caretaker to the property for the past 12 years.
“If you talk to people who come here for the first time, if there’s one common word they used to describe it, it’s ‘magical,’ ” said Macone.
As for who purchases the property, Macone said he has just one specification.
“My one request is that it’s somebody nice,” he said. “A decent person but ideally somebody who gets the magic of the place.”

The upcoming vote in the Senate on Judge Brett Kavanaugh
The Honorable Susan Collins Senate of the United States 413 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 September 8, 2018 (via webform) Dear Sen. Collins, I imagine you're getting lots of letters and calls from constituents regarding the upcoming vote in the Senate on Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. Having watched hours of his hearings before the Judiciary Committee this week, I thought my two cents may help you decide which way to go. Probably the most interesting part of the televised spectacle was Judge Kavanaugh's questioning under oath by Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont. From that, the unmistakable impression that emerged was Judge Kavanaugh deliberately misled the panel when he testified under oath that he had never received documents stolen from Democratic senators' computers. Also clear was that the judge also misled other Judiciary committees in 2004 and 2006, when they posed the same sort of questions. Many people are calling for him to withdraw because of this serial perjury, or for senators such as yourself to vote against him. Not me! In this instance, I believe it would be GOOD for the nation to have a proven liar and perjurer on the Supreme Court. Allow me to explain. In 2016, when we voted for President Trump, we knew he was a liar and dissembler. And we voted for him anyway. There is a simple explanation for this. The fact is, everything in the universe operates on a cycle. That includes the daily rising and setting of the sun, Earth's tides, the clock in your kitchen, the stock market, women's bodies, politics, the national economy, and even fashion. Remember in the 1980s when men's ties were narrow? Now they're wide -- and they will go back again. Remember bell-bottom trousers? Those will return, too. American values also operate on a cycle. Do you remember the old Superman television show starring George Reeves? One of its mottos was "truth, justice and the American Way." And it was fitting for the time. But that, too, has changed. Now it's more like "untruth, injustice and the American Way." Such a flip was inevitable, because EVERYTHING operates on a cycle. These days, and especially under our president, lying is much more "in fashion," so to speak. And that's what makes Judge Kavanaugh a justice for our times. We've reached a point in the cycle where it actually makes sense to put a three-time perjurer on the Supreme Court. For that reason, I wholeheartedly urge you to vote FOR him. Sincerely, Arthur Mofodopoulis 65 Babson Point Drive Eggemoggin, ME 04650 PS: May God help America, but even it can't fight the cycle.
