Oh lord, this whole plot was such a clusterfuck from start to finish.

Basically there was a leaked ABC recap where it is stated that Regina takes Belle's heart without Belle's permission. However the show muddled that up by either deleting the scene or never filming it.

Then, I kid you not, A&E just forgot all about her knowing. Because Belle getting used and abused to hurt Rumple is no big deal right? Why should anyone care? It's just Belle after all. (Sarcasm)

I hate this show. 🤮

i've probably ranted about it a hundred times already...

but BUT the way regina stole belle's heart? the scenes don't make sense. the characters don't make sense.

i liked the rumple&will team up to steal belle's heart, but on belle's side, it's not making sense! regina asked belle for her heart, and yet she's clueless when it was returned? regina's not supposed to pull hearts and order people against their wills either! there was no need! she overstepped! and did i mention how it never got brought up again!?

the subplot ends with belle looking at rumple longingly, like she remembered that "oh! i love him." then follows the apparent breakup between belle and will. (oh, and his place in this show also doesn't make sense!)

ergo, this is my most hated plotline. above all the s5-s7 weirdness, this is one where i don't even consider it canon. there's always a better, alternate version of the situation in my head. my headcanon pieces this stupid stupid situation together.

The moment she walks into the hockey house after a full day of classes and lectures, something’s off. The house is usually buzzing with hockey players by the time four rolls around and she comes walking into the house.

This time, the house is empty. Luca isn’t sitting in the living room playing some kind of game with Adam, the Duke boys aren’t yelling at each other in the kitchen, no stray hockey player is doing his homework or playing with Luca if Adam has a game.

It’s too quiet.

“Ethan?” she calls out. “Are you here?”

There’s no way they’d leave Ethan alone with his injured shoulder. He still needs help with a few basic things and can’t put a lot of weight on his shoulder yet. That’s why she’s practically been living with four hockey players since she and Ethan came back from summer break.

As she walks up the stairs, a soft “here” comes from down the hallway. She pushes the door to Ethan’s room open and peeks her head inside.

Ethan is lying in bed so she feels a little better, but he’s wearing an unbuttoned checkered flannel and a pair of jeans. Her sparkly black cowgirl hat from Halloween is on his head. She covers her smile with her hand and has to stifle a laugh.

“What the hell are you wearing?” she asks, voice muffled by her hands. The laughter is evident in her voice. “What is happening?”

He smiles and slowly manuvers himself so he’s sitting up against the headboard behind him. “I got bored and was pacing around my room and I found your hat while I was doing that,” he tells her. “Dressed the part. I was hoping you’d do me a favor though.”

She kicks the door shut behind her and drops her bag on the floor next to it. “Yeah? What’s that?”

“Save a horse, ride a hockey player?��� Ethan tells her. It’s more of a question than a comment. “Well, a hockey player dressed as a cowboy. Anyway, please?”

Even injured and ordered by the doctor to rest, Ethan is thinking about sex. Possibly explains why the house is so empty. “Did you kick everyone out or something?” she asks. “It’s Wednesday. The house is usually filled to the brim with hockey players by now.”

“Coach Naurato called an emergency practice at Yost,” he explains. “There’s a team meeting I have to go to at seven but until then, I have the house all to myself.” He pats his lap with the hand that’s attached to his healthy shoulder. “So, saddle up.”

The laugh that she’s been surpressing bubbles from her throat. She loses it for a second, but she kicks off her sneakers anyway. “You are insufferable, Ethan Edwards,” she laughs. “Hot, but insufferable.”

Ethan shoots her another smile. “Yeah, but you still love me anyway,” he comments as she carefully crawls onto his lap. “Plus, it’s been a while since you’ve been fucked so I knew you couldn’t turn this down.”

She rolls her eyes and plays with the button on Ethan’s jeans. “I wanted to be careful because of your shoulder, E,” she tells him. “But yeah I’m losing my mind a little bit because it’s been a while.”

“Knew it,” Ethan laughs.

“You better be nice to me,” she reminds him as she pops his jeans open by undoing the button. “I’ll make sure this goes excruciatingly slow for you if you’re not nice to me.”

He throws his hands in the air in surrender. “Alright,” he says. “No need for threats.”

She smiles and kneels between his knees so she can get his pants off. She wiggles the jeans off of his legs and throws them on the floor. She can clearly see the bulge that’s formed in his boxers. With a light touch, she traces the bulge and Ethan presses his lips in a line.

The Michigan hockey team had won yet another game, this one being a thriller with a shootout. You had watched from the stands at Yost with all of your friends while cheering on the boys.

When Ethan had scored the winning goal, the whole arena had erupted in excited cheers. Even from the stands, you could see his big smile as his teammates crowded around him.

“That’s your boy!” Your best friend yelled next to you, shaking your arm. You laughed as she jumped up and down.

After dating Ethan for a while, you knew how talented he was, never doubting his athletic ability. Even though hockey was a world you weren’t familiar with, Ethan made sure to always include you with his friends and even tried to teach you how to skate. His friends quickly became your friends, too, and soon enough, you felt like a part of the group. You were closest with Mark and Luca since you had been in a class with each of them, but Ethan’s other teammates still cared about you just as much.

“I’m gonna wait for E to come out with the guys,” you called to her over the crowd. Your best friend was putting on her coat and already making plans to go out which you had declined in favor of seeing Ethan.

“Okay, Y/N! You going back to Ethan’s?” She asked.

You nodded, laughing to yourself about another night of cuddling in already too-small bed. While you always let out a few weak complaints, you never truly meant them. Cuddling with Ethan, especially when you could get the room to yourselves, was always a fun time.

You gave your best friend a hug and she climbed up the steps. You went the other way, knowing where to meet the guys after they went to the locker room and got ready to leave.

Absentmindedly, you scrolled through TikTok. There were already highlights of the game circulating with Ethan’s winning goal as the most exciting moment of the game. You smiled as you read the comments praising Ethan and the rest of the hockey team.

A few minutes later, you heard the door opening and saw Luca and Adam walking out. Both stopped to give you a hug, but Adam quickly said goodbye so he could meet up with his girlfriend.

Luca opted to stay with you, chatting about the game and the upcoming test in your class.

“You guys played awesome tonight,” you said, and Luca thanked you. Ethan was definitely the star of the night, but you knew that the other boys were still just as important.

“Ethan should be out soon, once he’s done soaking up the praise,” Luca teased. Luca had introduced you to Ethan when you were working on a group project last semester and you two had been inseparable ever since.

“I just texted him that you’re out here, he’ll come running out when he knows his shadow is waiting,” Luca said. You quickly smacked his chest in response and he let out a meek groan.

“I learned how to chirp from Ethan, so watch it, Luca,” you laughed. You both knew Ethan liked to soak in the post-game atmosphere, especially after a close win.

After a few minutes, you heard the door open again and watched a steady stream of boys walk out. You couldn’t see Ethan at first, but then you heard that familiar laugh and saw his hair flowing as his head was thrown back. Just the sight of him made you weak in the knees, and you couldn’t help but feel the adrenaline rushing through you.

You pushed away from the wall where you were leaning and stood up straight, practically bouncing on your toes with excitement.

You were about to call Ethan’s name when he looked up and you locked eyes. He rushed over to give you a hug. Ethan was squeezing you hard but it didn’t matter, it felt like you two were the only ones in the world.

“I’m so proud of you, Ethan,” you mumbled into his chest. He pulled away from you and planted a kiss on your lips, hand finding the back of your neck to guide you to him.

“That’s all I need to hear,” he muttered against your lips. You were aware that the two of you were standing right in the middle of the hallway with Ethan’s bag blocking more space, but you really couldn’t care less. Ethan and you were pretty affectionate in public and the guys were used to it.

It never stopped the teasing, though.

“Oh my god, I’m literally about to witness the creation of a child,” you heard from a familiar voice. Rutger made a gagging noise which set the whole group off into laughter.

“Let them live, Rutger,” you heard Nolan say.

“I’d like to live without seeing my two friends stick their tongues down each other’s throats,” he called back.

“I second that!” Mark said as he started to walk past the two of you.

You pulled away once he said that, realizing that you were getting a little too comfortable in the locker room hallway. Ethan whined at your movement, pulling you into another hug.

“Come over to my room?” Ethan asked.

“I was already planning on it,” you answered, smiling up at Ethan’s face.

“You guys are gross,” Rutger said in a sing-song voice.

“This is why you’re single and I have the best girlfriend ever, Rut,” Ethan said shamelessly. You hid your face to suppress your laugh but you heard the other boys laughing and agreeing anyways.

You wiggled out of Ethan’s grasp to give a few of the other boys a hug. Dylan was the last to walk past the two of you, offering you both a smirk.

“Uh oh, Y/N, Eddy’s clingy tonight,” Dylan joked. “Looks like you have a whiny winner on your hands.”

“I think I can manage,” you said.

“I’d like him returned to us by Sunday at midnight, no later or you’ll both be grounded,” Dylan said and you both laughed.

“You have my word, Mr. Duke,” you promised. Once Dylan left, it was only you and Ethan left in the hallway. He looked like a tired puppy with his hair falling in front of his eyes.

“You played awesome, babe,” you whispered. “Can’t believe I’m dating the best player on the team.”

Ethan gave you a big smile and said thank you. He was always so humble about his accomplishments that you made sure you gave him praise as much as you could.

“Ready to head out?” You asked.

“And ready to cuddle and watch a movie and eat some good snacks,” he said as he grabbed his bag to start walking. He kept rambling about what movie to watch as you walked out of the arena. Ethan was a big softie who just loved to spend quality time together, which you adored.

“But I’m most excited just to be with you, Y/N,” Ethan said, making you weak in the knees yet again. You took his hand and followed him out, feeling like the luckiest girl ever.

you and luke have always been extremely close, so you were happy to be going to the college with him, until now. luke is seriously everywhere, and you have a love-hate relationship with that. you’re secretly dating not only his teammate, but one of his best friends. you guys have always had a ‘no dating teammates or friends’ rule, and you broke that. but what’s worst of all is that you’ve been dating ethan for 2 months, and still haven’t told luke.

your attention is drawn from your laptop to the sound of your phone ringing. you answer it, confused as to why luke was calling you at 5pm on a friday. “hello?” you say. “y/n! me and the boys are going out tonight. practice just ended so we’re all gonna go shower and pregame at our house around like 8. you wanna come with?” you groan, “luke no, i have homework. plus i don’t want to spend my friday night with my brother and his teammates”

you hear luke sigh through the phone, “cmon please! you’re friends with all of them anyways! it wouldn’t be weird i promise, you can even bring a friend too. just bring maya!” luke pleads. “luke.. fine. i’ll ask if maya can come. she isn’t home right now but i’ll text her. you said the guys are coming over at 8 right?” “yeah we’re gonna pregame, and then go out to the club around 9.”

you sigh, and look in the mirror on your wall. your hair is in a messy bun, sweats on, and one of luke’s old high school hoodies loosely hugging your body. “i’m only coming if maya can come” “yeah well you know she’ll be all in when she finds out adam is coming” luke snickers. “oh shut up luke. i’m going back to doing my homework” “bye you little nerd” he says before ending the call. you then text maya and ask if she would come with you, and of course your party animal of a roommate agrees. instantly you facetime ethan, and also text luke to tell him that you’re coming.

“hey babe!” ethan exclaims. “hey e, me and maya are coming over tonight. you gonna be on your best behavior?” you wink at him. “the hell does that mean?!” “you always try and flirt with me or make sly moves when luke is around! it’s so risky ethan, i’m begging you don’t do anything tonight. i’m not ready to tell him yet.” “fine fine fine, i won’t try anything tonight.” he groans in annoyance. “you better not try anything edwards! anyways, i need to start getting ready so i’ll see you later.” you smile, and he smiles back as you end the call.

eventually you and maya make your way to the boys’ shared house. you can hear all of the guys loudly shouting and laughing through the door. you were given a spare key by luke, so you unlock the door and just walk right in. the groups boys cheer as you walk in, nolan greeting you by shoving a bottle of titos in your face. “maya, y/n! take a shot with me!” nolan exclaims. you can already tell that the boys have had a few shots, which means tonight was going to be very chaotic.

and it in fact did get very chaotic.

you all made it to the club about thirty minutes ago, and everyone is on their first actual drink of the night. you’re all buzzed from the shots taken earlier, but now it’s time for the real stuff. you’re on the dance floor with maya, when suddenly ethan’s arms snake around your waist. maya takes this as her cue to leave, so she chases down adam fantilli, her so called “man.” aka the guy she’s been sleeping with on the down low, yet everyone sort of knows about it.

“ethan stop! luke is here!” you say attempting to wiggle out of his grasp, failing due to his strong arms. “oh relax, he’s over there at the bar ordering a drink with mark. you don’t think i’m that stupid to do these things when he’s looking, do you?” “i don’t know! you can be a little dumb sometimes babe” you laugh as you readjust yourself so that you’re standing facing him. he fakes being upset, and releases you from his arms. mark walks over with luke, handing you a refill of your drink.

“oh thanks mark! you didn’t need to do that!” you exclaim. “oh i didn’t, your brother paid.” mark smiles. “of course he did” you roll your eyes. luke always pays for your drinks at the bar since he doesn’t trust anyone else to handle them, he always thinks you’ll get roofied or something. “guys cmon, rutger found a table and were all gonna play a drinking game. nolan got a bunch of shots for us to use!” luke exclaims. you all follow him to the table where all of the guys and maya are sat. you sit in between maya and dylan, ethan sat cross the table from you next to luke.

“alright guys, it’s truth or dare but if you chicken out you take a shot. it’s really simple” dylan explains. “easy enough, who’s starting?” luca says. “i will, ethan truth or dare!” johnny says. “i’m not a wuss, dare” he smirks at johnny. “i dare you to go up to some random chick, and use the absolute worst pickup line ever” johnny chuckles. “johnny that’s so lame!” adam groans. “not so fast there bud, i get to pick the girl.” johnny says, as ethan’s eyes go wide.

you basically feel your heart stop. absolutely no one besides maya knows that you and ethan are dating, so there’s nothing you can do to stop him. before you even realize it, ethan is standing up from the table and walking over to some random blonde girl wearing the most revealing outfit you’ve ever seen. you feel tears brim at your eyes since there’s absolutely nothing you can do about the situation. you can’t go over there and pull your boyfriend away from her, you have to watch in silence. so you do the next best thing to stop yourself from crying,

“i’m uh— gonna go to the bathroom really quick.” you say, quickly standing up and pushing past people in the crowd. you pass by ethan and the unknown blonde girl, and see her arm resting on his forearm. you watch as ethan’s eyes look into hers, then accidentally glance over into yours. his eyes go wide at the sight, and this only makes your blood boil even more. you speed up your beeline to the bathroom as ethan abandons the blonde girl. ethan begins chasing after you, leaving the girl utterly confused.

“y/n!” he calls out, pushing past people in an attempt to catch up with you. unfortunately there’s a line for the bathroom, so there’s no more avoiding ethan. he grabs your arm to turn you around, and sees you holding back tears.

“i’m so sorry.” he says, his eyes soft. “don’t be ethan, no one knows we’re dating anyways so there’s nothing either of us could’ve done” you say softly, yet loud enough for him to hear over the music. “i should’ve just taken the shot, y/n. i’m so sorry. i promise i wasn’t even interested in her!” “ethan just stop apologizing, i’m sorry for overreacting like this. please just go back to the guys, okay?” you say as you enter the bathroom, leaving ethan alone with his thoughts.

suddenly ethan feels marks hand on his shoulder. he turns around to face him, and sees luke on his way over as well. “what happened?” mark asks. “where’s my sister, edwards” luke asks, very much concerned. “she’s in the bathroom, i saw her hurrying to the bathroom so i thought something was wrong. plus that girl was weird and i wanted to leave.” he shrugs trying to play it cool, and i mean technically he wasn’t lying.

meanwhile you’re stood at the mirror looking at yourself. you’re not upset at ethan, you’re just disappointed in yourself. tonight was the biggest reality check ever. luke has absolutely no idea you guys are dating, and it’s eating you alive. he’s going to be so heartbroken when you tell him, because if you and ethan break up things will be weird, and you know luke will end up taking your side, meaning losing his best friend. but you don’t want there to be sides, you just want luke to be happy.

maya then walks into the bathroom, and helps you recollect yourself before you both head back to the table. the guys are still playing the game, and ethan gives you a pitiful ‘i’m sorry’ look. you smile at him letting him know it’s okay as you sit down again. you notice a few empty shot glasses, wondering what would’ve happened if there was one more empty glass from when it was ethan’s turn. you’re snapped from your thoughts when luke calls on you to answer a question.

“y/n/n truth or dare?” he snickers, plotting his next sentence. “truth” you say, afraid of luke’s idiotic dares. “damn it! i was hoping you’d pick dare, i don’t have any truth questions!” he rolls his eyes playfully. “i have one, i was gonna ask one of the guys but it’s still a good question.” philippe shrugs. “alright, shoot it at me flip” you say, calling him the nickname you’d given him.

“who’d you lose your virginity to?” he asks, making your eyes almost bulge out of your head. all of the guys start laughing and oohing, making your cheeks flush red.

you definitely couldn’t answer that question since it was in fact, ethan edwards.

you grab a shot off of the table and down it, the familiar warm sting flowing down your chest. “woah woah woah, why did you answer that missy!” luke scolds you. “probably cause she’s a little virgin” dylan teases, making you hide your face in maya’s shoulder from embarrassment of the topic. suddenly, a drunken ethan blurts out something you’d never expected to ever be said.

“oh it’s not because of that.” he blurts. you then hear the boys around you go quiet, and your mouth falls agape. he instantly covers his mouth, in shock of what has just slipped out of his mouth. “ethan, what do you mean by that.” luke turns to face him, anger written all over his face.

“i uh— um—“ he stutters on his words. “ethan. fucking speak.” luke says, nothing but seriousness in his tone. “yo uhh i think we need more shots! who wants to come with me!” mackie nervously chuckles. the entire rest of the group says “me” in unison, before quickly rising from the table. you look at maya hoping she’ll stay, but he gives you a pitiful look and scurries off.

“fucking speak edwards! did you have sex with my twin sister?” he yells, startling both you and ethan. “luke stop!” you cry out. luke then realizes what’s going on due to your guys’ silence, and chuckles out of anger. “i cant believe either of you. especially you y/n. fuck both you!” he shouts, before storming away from the table and you assume out of the club.

the rest of the night is a blur, but all you can remember is taking another six shots and getting shit face drunk. somehow maya got you both home, and now you’re sat in bed on a saturday morning with the worst hangover of your life. you haven’t spoke to both ethan nor luke since last night, and you’re dreading checking your phone.

you drink the water and pills maya left you on your nightstand, and face your fear of powering your phone back on. you see a few texts from ethan, a couple from mark, one from dylan, and none from luke. you and ethan text back and forth for bit, and you learn that he’s staying at nolan’s place for right now. he continues to apologize and you reassure him that it’s okay, luke had to find out eventually anyways.

you decide to be brave and write out a text to luke. you know you’re in the wrong, but you also know that luke isn’t the guy to hold a grudge, especially when it comes to family. you’re just hoping he’ll hear you out.

your heart falls to your stomach when you see this. you try your best to hold back tears, but you can’t help it when you realize just exactly what you’ve done. you and luke bicker often, but never have you ever been in a fight this bad since middle school, when luke kissed your best friend in a game of truth or dare.

quiet sobs escape your mouth, and you curl up into a ball still laying in your bed. you grab your phone and do the best thing you can think of, calling quinn. he surprisingly answers quickly despite the time difference.

“hello? y/n are you okay? you never call me” he says. “quinn.” you choke out. “are you crying?! what’s wrong?” he quickly speaks up. “me and l-luke. we got in the worst fight ever. i don’t think he- he’ll ever forgive me” you sob, just wishing you could take everything back. “don’t say that, luke will forgive you. he’s your twin, there’s no way he won’t. what happened?” he asks.

you take a deep breath and wipe the snot and tears from your face before you explain everything. “oh y/n/n. me and you both know that you’re in the wrong, i’m not gonna lie to you and try to sugarcoat that. but i’ll try to talk to him, i won’t tell him i know anything. you guys need to talk, just give him time. this is a lot for him. but i promise you aren’t a bad person. he just needs time, y/n.” “you’re the best quinn.” you smile, even though he can’t see you.

“love you y/n. i’ll talk to him, but don’t be afraid to call me if you need anything. maybe don’t tell jack yet since he has a temper, but i’ll tell my coach to let me check my phone at practice incase you called, mkay?” “mkay. love you quinny” you say before he ends the call. you decide to leave your room, and you see maya on the couch watching love island.

“hey, how are you?” she asks you. “a mess” you chuckle, gesturing to your puffy face and tear stained cheeks. “oh lovey c’mere” she says as she gets up and pulls you into a hug. she gently rubs your back, the same way ethan does.

you invited ethan over for a bit, and as you’re cuddling in your bed, reality hits again. you sigh loudly, grabbing ethan’s attention. “it’ll be okay, i promise you baby.” he says as he traces shapes on your back. “i just feel like a shitty person, eth.” “you aren’t a shitty person, you can’t control who you’re attracted too” he says pressing a gentle kiss into your hair. “ethan maybe this is too early and bad timing, but i love you.” “i love you more, y/n. this whole situation really showed me that.” he smiles down at you, making you forget about the whole thing for the slightest moment.

eventually ethan leaves, and you cry some more, and then you decide to call luke. of course he doesn’t pick up, so you leave a voicemail since you have absolutely nothing better to do. “luke call me back, please? im sorry. i love you, it wasn’t supposed to happen like this.” you pause to let out a chuckle, “god i’m a mess i’m sending you a voicemail? this is embarrassing, anyways please call me back? or text me, just please talk to me.” you say before ending your ramble and pressing the end button.

after practice he listens to your voicemail, and can hear the genuine pain in your voice. he decides to text you back, since he hates this just as much as you do.

you arrive at the hole in the wall cafe you and luke discovered as soon as you arrived in ann arbor last year. you see luke sitting at a table near the corner, and you slowly make your way over there. you sit down and you both look at each other in silence. you decide to break it, since technically this is your fault.

“i’m so sorry luke. i was going to tell you i promise.” “are you guys dating? or just hooking up?” “dating..” you say quietly. “well that’s better than i thought, i was worried that you guys were just gonna end up ghosting each other after a booty call or something, and then be all salty or whatever. i’m just glad that the girls who i hear in the guys’ rooms aren’t you” he chuckles, lightening the mood. “ew, gross luke” you groan, not needing to know how many girls get brought over to the house.

“how long have you guys been dating?” he asks, bringing back the serious topic. “two months.” you say awkwardly. “oh wow, okay” he says, shocked that it’s already been a bit of time. “so he took your uh- vir-“ “i’m not talking about this with you luke!” you groan hiding your face in your hands from embarrassment. “sorry sorry! but i think you guys are cute, i just don’t appreciate secrets being kept from me.” “it won’t happen again i promise luke, im really sorry.” “but you better tell him that if he ever hurts you i’ll beat his ass, like seriously.”

you chuckle, and text ethan telling him everything that just happened, showing luke your screen from across the table as you do so.

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

This one came out a bit angsty but I hope you like it. .....

“Dr Watson?” Anon called, cradling their slashed arm to their chest. The vampire attack had taken them by surprise and they’d dodged just a little too slowly. It wasn’t life threatening, they didn’t think, but the amount of blood staining the sleeve of their shirt was beginning to concern them.

“Dr Watson!” they called a little more forcefully, hoping he would hear them.

“He’s not in,” A door in the corridor cracked open and the gruff voice of Edward Hyde slithered out, “What’d you want with him?”

Anon gestured at their bleeding arm, “I’m hurt,” they said, “When will he be back?”

“Won’t be for a while yet. Someone said they spotted Sherlock Holmes and an odd fellow at a local tavern and he’s gone to investigate,” Hyde peered at the injury with a scowl, “That looks rather bad, I’m not working right now so I can spare a minute to patch you up.”

Though it was not out of the question for Edward to tend to the wounded in Watson’s absence Anon was uncertain it would be wise to take him up on his offer. He was not known for being especially kind to patients and just last week Adam had tried to demand that Edward wash his hands prior to treating him and had come away with a scalpel sticking out of his knee.

Anon must have hesitated a moment too long for Edward suddenly became impatient, “Fine, bleed all over the hallway then, it’s not my problem!”

As he moved to shut the door Anon stopped him, “Wait, please help!” they pleaded reaching out and putting their good hand on Edward’s sleeve. He froze, and for a terrible moment Anon thought he would attack them. But to their surprise his face seemed almost to soften for a moment.

“Aye, come in then, I’ll patch you.”

Anon followed him, the lab, for once, was tidy. When Edward worked it was a mess of fluids, scattered tools and strange smells filling the air as questionable concoctions bubbled in glass flasks over their burners. Today it was still, the desk was orderly and it seemed as though the fearsome Edward Hyde, scourge of London, had been up to nothing more sinister than balancing a cheque book.

“What are you staring at?” Hyde barked, causing Anon to snap to attention.

“Nothing…just…the lab is usually busier,” they replied.

Edward gave a short huff, “I’ve run into a bit of a block on Larry’s cure. Working on something else helps clear my mind. I’m quite sure if I hadn’t put my work away for a moment, I would have killed the next person who passed my door.”

He was not joking. Though he kept himself in check for the sake of the group Edward Hyde’s temper was legendary and inflicting pain was an indulgence to him, one he rarely denied himself when given cause or opportunity. Anon wondered if they would be subject to his abuses today; they hoped not.

Gesturing at the chair by his desk Edward bade them to sit while he fetched a medical supply kit. He had them roll up their sleeve while he cleaned the blood away.

“Oooh, look at those claw marks. Those’ll need stitches,” he remarked, his face splitting into a grin that made Anon just a little uncomfortable.

Edward plopped a glass decanter full of amber liquid on the desk next to them, “Drink a swig of that, it will dull your senses a little. I’ve got no laudanum so that’ll have to do.”

Anon removed the stopper and gave the bottle a sniff. It was scotch and it smelled…expensive. The decanter was luxurious too, actual crystal, from what they could tell. Awfully nice liquor for someone as greasy looking as Edward Hyde to be drinking. They took a swallow and found it strong but not unpleasant. Edward had them lay their arm out on the table so he could begin his stitching.

It was painful, but not unbearable and Anon held as still as they could. “I wouldn’t have taken you for a doctor,” they said, emboldened a bit by the alcohol.

“Most don’t,” Hyde grunted, “I have two doctorates in law as well, comes in handy when I need to deal with the police. Oh, don’t stare at me like that, I am every bit a scholar and gentleman, despite my more unsavory activities.”

“What made you quit practicing? It takes years to be come a doctor, why not make a career of it?”

“What makes you think I didn’t?” he gave them a particularly hard jab with the needle.

Anon yelped and shuffled uncomfortably, “Well, you’re-“ they gestured with their good arm, “-here!”

“Och, so is Watson and I don’t see you questioning his credentials,” Hyde snarled indignantly, waving the needle to remind Anon that they should have a care for what they said in his presence.

“I’m sorry! I meant no offence, I just wonder…well…I wonder-what happened to you?”

Acid green eyes flickered up to meet Anon’s own, they held for a moment, as though he were on the cusp of a confession before he lowered them and resumed his stitching.

“I thought I loved being Edward Hyde more than I loved everything…everyone else in my life,” there was grief in his voice, and Anon wondered if perhaps they’d had too much to drink for Edward’s voice sounded strange to them. Softer, smoother and deeper, as though it belonged to someone else. They tried to focus on his face and, for an instance, it was as if Edward’s form had become blurry and larger before condensing back into shape.

Anon put the bottle back on the desk and decided they had had enough. Edward finished the last suture and wiped down his desk, waving a thick, hairy hand at Anon in dismissal. He seemed off-kilter and against their better judgement, Anon rested a hand on his shoulder.

“Thank you, Mr. Hyde. I hope maybe someday you can get back some of what you lost.”

Had Anon spoken out of empty pity Edward would have slammed their head into the desk until their skull cracked open and their brains splattered across the varnished wood. But they hadn’t, they were sincere and that was so much worse because Edward Hyde did not know what to do with sincerity. True goodness always made him feel small, made him feel more sharply the burden of being the horrible creature he was. He loved and hated and wanted it so much that it was all he could do not to howl in despair. Shaking he turned away from anon and choked out “-Get out…get out now before I hurt you. I don’t want to this time, but I will if you stay even a moment longer.”

Anon reeled back and fled from the lab, feeling as though they had just had just escaped something much more dangerous than the vampire that had attacked them.
