In memory for the birthday of "Edward Allan Clarke", better known as "Fast" Eddie Clarke, was a British guitarist who was a member of heavy metal bands Fastway and Motörhead.

Of Motörhead's classic lineup, which consisted of Lemmy, himself and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, he was the last surviving member at the time of his death.

Today we remember the passing of "Fast" Eddie Clarke who died January 10, 2018 in London, England

Edward Allan Clarke, better known as "Fast" Eddie Clarke, was a British guitarist who was a member of heavy metal bands Fastway and Motörhead. Of Motörhead's classic lineup, which consisted of Lemmy, himself and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, he was the last surviving member at the time of his death.

Clarke began playing guitar and, by the time he was fifteen years old, had been through many local bands, one of which was called The Bitter End. Of his "Fast" moniker, Clarke has said "I didn't get the name Fast Eddie because of any sex thing, and it wasn't even because I could play fast. It was just that I could play one note in a solo really fast," referring to his skillful tremolo picking.

He continued playing local gigs until 1973, when he turned professional by joining Curtis Knight's blues prog rock band, Zeus, as lead guitarist. In 1974, the band recorded an album called The Second Coming at Olympic Studios. Clarke wrote the music to Knight's lyrics on a track entitled "The Confession".

Clarke recorded the album Sea of Time with Zeus. Later, with guitarist friend Allan Callan, keyboard player Nicky Hogarth, and drummer Chris Perry, Clarke attended a recorded jam session at Command Studios in Piccadilly. As a result of the tracks from this session, the quartet secured a deal with Anchor Records, and called the band Blue Goose. With a recording contract secured, Clarke, Hogarth and Perry left Zeus to focus on their own project with Callan.

Clarke soon formed another band with Be-Bop Deluxe bassist Charlie Tumahai vocalist Ann McCluskie, and Jim Thompson on drums. Called Continuous Performance, this line up lasted until early 1975, when their demo tracks failed to secure them a record deal and the band split up. Still out to secure a record deal, Clarke then formed a group with Nicky Hogarth from Blue Goose, bass player Tony Cussons and drummer Terry Slater. Their efforts to get a deal were also unsuccessful, and Clarke temporarily gave up the music industry.

Clarke was working on re-fitting a houseboat, when he met drummer Phil Taylor, who had recently joined Motörhead. However, according to Kilmister's authorized biography, it appears that Clarke was introduced to Lemmy by a receptionist at the rehearsal studio, Gertie, who was romantically involved with Clarke at the time. Not long after, he was playing with them. In the early days Eddie rehearsed with Motörhead, before going on the road, at Snobs Rehearsal Studios, part of a converted brewery on the corner of Kings Road and Lots Road, Chelsea, known as the "Furniture Cave". Motörhead's popularity increased along with their UK chart successes. The threesome (Lemmy, Clarke, Taylor) are considered the classic Motörhead line-up and have the Motörhead, Overkill, Ace of Spades, Bomber, No Sleep 'til Hammersmith and Iron Fist albums plus a string of hit singles to their credit.

He performed a lead vocal on five Motörhead songs: "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" (on which he traded vocals with Lemmy), "I'm Your Witchdoctor" (on which he duets vocals with Lemmy), "Step Down", and "Emergency", one of the B-side tracks on the St. Valentine's Day Massacre EP, upon which they performed "Please Don't Touch", with Girlschool, under the combined band names of Headgirl.

Clarke left Motörhead in 1982, whilst on tour of the United States. Becoming unhappy at the results of the Iron Fist album, the recording sessions with the Plasmatics were the final straw. For the B-side of the Stand By Your Man EP the bands took turns in covering each other's songs, Clarke felt that this compromised the band's principles and resigned. According to Joel McIver, Clarke himself later denied this version of events and had said: "[Philthy] was the main instigator in my being excluded from the band. Notice I do not call it leaving, as it was not my choice. I had imagined dying onstage with Motörhead, so it was a blow when they didn’t want me in the band any longer." Clarke was replaced by former Thin Lizzy and Wild Horses lead guitarist Brian Robertson after Anvil frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow turned down the offer to play with Motörhead. Clarke's last gig with Motörhead took place at the New York Palladium on 14 May 1982. Another cameo from Clarke on a later Motörhead album was on 2000's Live at Brixton Academy, released in 2003, on which the band featured many guest appearances from other guitarists, of which he was one, playing on the songs "No Class", "The Chase Is Better Than the Catch" and "Overkill".

Hearing that UFO bassist Pete Way was keen to leave that band, the two met and decided their new band's name would be an amalgamation of their own two names, resulting in Fastway. They advertised in the music press for a drummer and a vocalist. Meanwhile a rehearsal was organised, for which Clash drummer Topper Headon filled in on drums. The ads began showing positive results, cassettes from potential band members arrived; one of these was from a young singer named Dave King.

Clarke was impressed with his voice and financed a trip to London for King; after an audition together, King became the Fastway vocalist. Ex-Humble Pie member Jerry Shirley became the drummer. The band sent out demo tapes and were approached by CBS Records for a recording deal. Way announced his departure just as they were about to sign the deal, but CBS had faith in Fastway and decided to sign them despite this setback.

Touring had been strenuous for the band and, upon returning to Britain, they decided to split. Clarke stayed in London, and soon received a call from King about giving Fastway another go. Clarke agreed and moved to Ireland. With another album for CBS in view, they rehearsed with three of King's friends. The record label was happy with the sound and had them record at London's Abbey Road Studios with producer Terry Manning, releasing Waiting for the Roar in 1986. Clarke toured America with Fastway, supporting AC/DC, followed by a lengthy European tour, which produced 1992's Say What You Will – Live album. Fastway were also engaged to provide music for the Trick Or Treat film soundtrack, for which they composed the title track and performed "Heft" and "If You Could See" from their albums.

After the band split up again, Clarke moved back to London and met up with Lea Hart, a solo artist in the Far East. Clarke's record deals had now expired, so the pair took a demo tape to Douglas Smith (Clarke's former Motörhead manager) at GWR Records, who willingly signed a deal. Still using the name Fastway, they recorded the On Target album. It featured Don Airey and Paul Airey on keyboards, Neil Murray on bass, plus Bram Tchaikovsky of The Motors and Christine Byford as backing vocalists.

Clarke's group now consisted of Riff Raff on drums, keyboards and bass, plus assorted friends helping out; Biff Byford and Nigel Glockler of Saxon, Don Airey, and Kim McAuliffe and Cris Bonacci of Girlschool. Following the production of two albums, Clarke and Hart split up.

However, the excesses he had indulged in with Motörhead had taken their toll, and led to Clarke being admitted to hospital, spending time afterwards in recuperation. Having recovered, Clarke released a solo album, It Ain't Over Till It's Over, which blends Motörhead and Fastway styles. Lemmy also helped out on the album by writing and singing the track "Laugh at the Devil". The double CD release, Fast Eddie Clarke Anthology, on Sanctuary Records showcased a collection of Clarke's music spanning his career before and after Motörhead. It also marked a return to live performances with a re-formed Fastway, including an appearance in the UK at the Download Festival in summer 2007.

In 2014, Clarke went back to his blues roots and released a new studio album through Secret Records. Make My Day: Back To Blues was a collaboration between Clarke and the keyboardist from Shakatak, Bill Sharpe. Clarke reunited with Lemmy on 6 November 2014 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham to play the Motörhead track, "Ace of Spades".

Clarke died on 10 January 2018, aged 67, in a hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia.

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

The first I got involved in? Not wrote, but just... involved. Mh. It’s gotta be One Piece, that’s where I discovered fanart and fanfiction for the first time. First fic I ever read was some self-insert love-triangle between a Mary-Sue and Luffy and Ace and I absolutely loved it because the mere fact that here, for free, I just got to read about my favorite characters and my favorite anime was absolutely mindblowing.

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?

I mean. 75% of the ships I love are “obscure”. I... I always find the very obvious mainstream ships... boring. I mean, sometimes I find them nice in canon, but mostly I find canon to provide enough about them that I don’t really need fandom to get more of it, you know? Or, which also often happens, I find the mainstream ships have more of a very strong friendship-dynamic, or even a sibling-dynamic in some cases, and I just can’t really find it in myself to want to see them in a romantic way.

So, if I have to pick an, as in one, obscure ship, I will have to go with my top OTP. Jagnus. Jace and Magnus literally lived together, in both the show-canon and the book-canon, yet somehow it is an “obscure” ship. I mean, not somehow, we all know why. It’s the unwritten fandom rule of “canon mlm shall NEVER EVER BE BROKEN UP HOW DARE YOU SHIP ONE WITH SOMEONE ELSE”. You have no idea how often that rule has come between me and my OTP. Basically every time there is a canon mlm ship, really.

And this in no way or shape means to criticize those who only ship canon and are content with it, you do you, but I do find the lack of creativity in shipping in fandom where there is a canon mlm ship... really damn boring. Fandoms without canon mlm representation have the wildest constellations of ships, have a far broader variety of content, but when there is canon mlm, the majority of a fandom tends to just happily sit down with it and hug it and prefer not to be creative with the content and the shipping. And as a certified multishipper, I don’t really get that - like, even if you like the canon, you could have multiple ships?

17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?

My first OTP was Shere Khan/Bagheera, because gods do I love Jungle Cubs. And while other ships I interact more with have pushed it off the throne, if I see any form of Sheregheera content, I am immediately sucked in, no questions asked, no hesitation. I am utterly in love with this very rare, small, very obscure actually, ship and I will always love it and it still is one of my favorites.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

Ooof. Interesting one. I’ve done a variety of PJO fics I’m particularly fond of in previous versions of such a question, so let’s go with something else this time. “The Lost Soulmarks”. It’s, at this point, probably my own personal most reread story. I just reread it the other night, actually. It just - it hits all of the right spots in what I want from a fic. Very often, I write to please my readers, with “What do my followers like most?” in my mind at least to a certain degree, but some things are absolutely self-indulgent. And I should really write more absolutely self-indulgent fics because those are the ones I myself keep coming back to. It has ABO-verse, it has soulmates, it’s Jace-centric, with lots of love, misunderstandings but not the kind where one of them is to blame but rather where it’s due to the circumstances, it’s really emotionally painful, but pays off in the end. It’s... seriously those are all the things I love.

the barn was twinkling with the lights that she and jolene had strung up earlier that day. the real party was at town hall, where the carpenters were, but none of the party goers seemed to care. it was small; mostly nate’s siblings and henry and clara, clara’s older sister, caitlyn who janie vaguely knew of, tally edwards -who’d been living with nate for some time, jolene olsen, iris franklin, and a couple of nate’s friends she vaguely knew, but not really. they played christmas music, and nate and janie were in the center of the makeshift dance floor, laughing and swinging one another around as they went. red faced and breathless, they exited the floor with janie tugging her boyfriend’s arm as she was saying, “nate!” in a faux whine, “nate i want to give you your christmas gift!” she was saying, trying to shove him from behind to no avail. it was the christmas before they’d all leave for college, before jo would be murdered that may, before gracie would go into remission and janie would leave for pennsylvania to begin her life with eddy. it was a carefree moment when everything was right in the world of hawkins indiana. where tally and iris would begin dating, when caitlyn and jo exchanged gifts in the christmas tree lot outside the barn, when henry and clara would kiss and cringe at the idea of kissing anyone. and janie was trying to give nate a gift she had under the tree in the main house to no avail as he looked up and smirked at what was above their heads. “uh, uh, uh, nathaniel underwood, that’s not your christmas gift!” she jokingly chastised him and pointed her finger to his chest. “no!” giggling as he kissed her and she threw her arms around his neck. “nate, you’re such a dork!” she was laughing as he scooped her up, twirling her, causing her to shriek with laughter.

it was a bit silly, since it was the two of them, but parker had gotten it for free at the farmer’s market, and how could parker resist? kacey hadn’t seemed to care one way or another that the girl had hung a sprig of mistletoe in their kitchen, and if parker was being honest, she’d forgotten about it soon after she’d hung it. parker had been making cookies - it was a new recipe she was trying, and while most people would experiment before deciding on making a batch for christmas cookie boxes, but that wasn’t parker rose adams. not at all. she was excited for her sister to get there, and she danced around the kitchen to christmas music, which her sister had teased was silly because they were jewish, but parker hadn’t cared less. parker loved christmas, and that was that! she had even forced kacey to decorate the tree with white and blue lights, had put a menorah in the living room window and had sung jingle bells at the top of her lungs while doing it. she was heading to the pantry as kacey had been moving into the kitchen and the two collided, causing the cookie plate she’d been holding to crash and skid across the floor. laughing, the two dropped to their knees, picking up their mess and grinning at one another. “ah well, no use crying over broken cookies,” she shrugged with a grin and put them on the plate. whipping her brow, she looked up and froze. “kace, look!” she said with a teasing grin and pointed up at the ceiling. “it’s only fair, we have to kiss!” the two girls jokingly pecked each other on the lips, and parker snorted and looked at kacey. then she moved in again, cupping her cheek and kissing her more intimately before pulling away and making her stand. “okay! now, we have a lot of work to do kacey, santa waits for no man. or woman, for that matter!”

max and kaeden

max was trying to make this christmas normal, and kaeden appreciated the effort her husband gave. kaeden was very much into a vintage christmas, and she was setting up their little village, humming along to silver bells when max came behind her and causing her to look up. “oh, you are such a cheese ball, max clarke!” she teased, looking at the mistletoe and her husband. “oh no, you don’t get rewarded for being so corny,” she joked with a snort, shoving him back as he nipped her cheek and tried to get to her before she relented, kissing him hard and fast. hugging him, she sighed, kissing his chest. “you’re so goofy!” she said, holding him tighter, afraid he’d leave her again to that dark place he tried to keep her safe from. “i love you so fucking much, maxie!” she said, kissing his chest again.

"gray, c’mon, don’t be a clown,” tristan said as grayson refused to let her leave the mistletoe. “grayson, c’mon, people are staring!” she hissed, her cheeks red as she looked around. leave it to grayson best to whip out a sprig of mistletoe after skating with her. okay, that was too specific, but tristan was a stubborn girl and she wouldn’t be bullied into soft submission by her best friend. or, at least that’s what she kept telling herself as she tried to move. “grayson!” she whined, laughing. kissing his cheek, she crossed her arms, “and that’s all you’re going to get,” she said, trying to jump and grab the sprig. “this is truly unfair. this is a crime, grayson! we aren’t a romance novel, this could be a night in jail!” she said laughing. but she looked at him and said, “grayson!” when he kissed the top of her head and held her hand, she leaned into him, hugging his side. “c’mon you fool, we have to find elliott and sienna. but i dare you to give that to elliott so she can torture lucas and sienna,” she said with a cheeky grin before running off ahead of him, stealing the sprig as she went.

the game room always had a christmas eve party for the kids, and during this time, dominique would’ve been in oliver’s arms exchanging gifts and kissing under a mistletoe. this year, oliver was playing pool with the guys with macy hayes hanging on his every word, and dominique was pretending not to be bothered as she and rosalyn played a game of chess. dominique was awful at chess, she wouldn’t lie, but rosalyn had been her rock this christmas. the two girls had always been close. she was oliver’s stepsister, and they’d become friends by proxy. she had always been the third wheel, but neither her or oliver had ever really cared. with the breakup so fresh, dominique had been grateful for the girl trying to cheer her up and keep her sane. “do you want to get out of here? i think the ice rink is probably deserted,” dominique said brightly and when rosalyn agreed, the two had snuck out and skated. by the time they came back inside, they were freezing and it was almost one in the morning. warming their hands to their mouths, they laughed, making plans to sneak into the kitchens and get cocoa and whatever cookies they could find when rosalyn dropped to tie her boot. dominique was looking out the window of the ski loge and grinned, “wow, look at the lights! it looks so magical!” she gasped, seeing the mountain light up and glow as rosalyn joined her. “god, this is such a good christmas, lynnie! thank you!” she gasped, hugging her best friend tight, and rosalyn tapped her pointing up and laughing, kissing her on the cheek - or she was going to. one moved, and then their mouths connected and they froze. dominique squeaked in surprise and rosalyn pulled back, but dominique stopped her. “i’m - i’m sorry. i wasn’t expecting -” but cutting off rosalyn, she gave a soft, shy smile. “i just haven’t kissed anyone since - well, you know,” she said, looking down at her feet, and then kissing rosalyn lightly. when she pulled away, she gasped in horror hearing a whoop and a cheer and seeing oliver, who was looking at them with a bit of betrayal as he turned away. “ollie - oliver! oliver, wait!” she said, not thinking twice as she went after him.
