John Travolta being cast as Edna Turnblad in the 2007 hairspray movie musical is a goddamn tragedy. Hairspray is a great show with great music and a good message but it's like it didn't even get half of its own point through the casting. Edna Turnblad is a middle aged fat woman who spent 9 years as a hermit secluded in her house that is brought out only because of how much she cares about her daughter who is finding unprecedented success on TV and gives her faith that the world is changing. Her marriage is tested and she and Wilbur show in Timeless to me that they are madly in love with each other. By the end of the movie she proclaims "and if you don't like the way I look well I just don't give a damn". This is all awesome! But only if the character was actually played by a fat woman. Fat women, especially fat older women don't get to be seen as loved and valuable and don't get happy story beats and character arcs the way Edna Turnblad does and it could have been great to actually give a fat woman a role in a successful musical and see that kind of story and character be represented in good faith. But instead we have John Travolta cross dressing and in a fat suit making a joke out of the character that makes all of the story beats fall flat. She's a joke. It sucks.

Ok y'all, important question:
Just curious cause I rewatched Hairspray recently, and I have no perception of whether people thought John Travolta did the role justice, or any reaction beyond 'JoHn TrAvoLtA PLAyED wOmAn😲❗️'

Divine as Edna Turnblad in “Hairspray” (1988)
The New York Times said of Divine’s 1980s films: "Those who could get past the unremitting weirdness of Divine's performance discovered that the actor/actress had genuine talent, including a natural sense of comic timing and an uncanny gift for slapstick."

“You’re Timeless To Me” from Hairspray is so fucking cute. Like y’all have no idea how in love with it I am. There’s no reason for it to be that good. Christopher and John ate that up too.

ironing appreciation post
i cant think of a single thing rn thats better than ironing
it's so therapeutic to just smooth creases out of stuff, especially ironing pleats or collars so they look sharp and neat and gorgeouss
like i just feel very edna turnblad core
it's also just very lovely and metaphorical, like it's a lot more difficult to iron a crease out than to make a new one, and it takes a lot of care and diligence to properly press something out
anyway ironing is pretty cool :)

As a kid watching hairspray, while I always thought that Penny and Seaweed were the better couple, I really wanted a relationship like Tracy and Link. Mainly because I did (and still do) see myself in Tracy. Now that im an adult who is getting married in a year I would give anything to have a relationship like Edna and Wilbur. Them singing about how no matter how much time passes and how they may change they will always be it for each other. It gets me every time.
