I’ve been on a Soulmates kick today and just saw a fic where Steve has two marks - one for Robin and one for Eddie. And it’s got me thinking.

Of course, he doesn’t know who his marks are for. He only knows that they’re two people because they look so different. Soulmarks show up where you and your soulmate will have the first skin-skin contact, and they have the words they will say when that happens written in their handwriting.

Steve has one covering his palm, the handwriting is small and sharp, all angles and no rounded edges. That one says “Steve, we need to run”. It seems scared, the wording, but he refuses to think about it. The other mark he has is covering his left hip, curling like someone was holding him from the side. This handwriting is completely different from the other one and is best described as chicken scratch. It’s big and messy, letters flowing into each other like the writer didn’t even pick up their pen between each stroke. That one says “I got you, just lean on me”. It seems less scared but there’s concern laced in the words that helps Steve feel less alone when he’s laying in bed late at night. That’s the only time he ever lets himself think about his soulmates, during the day he avoids it like the plague. His parents are soulmates and they barely speak, so soulmates can’t be all they’re cracked up to be. After Nancy never makes one of his marks tingle and burn he tries to give up on the idea entirely, figuring he can go on without a soulmate and be with Nancy - but then she breaks his heart and those late nights are all he has.

His first soulmark changes when he’s stuck underneath Starcourt mall the summer after he graduated. He had been working with a girl, Robin, who barely tolerated him on a good day and now she’s been sucked into his shitty world. When the alarms go off in the bunker he barely has a second to react before Robin is grabbing his hand and yelling at him, “Steve, we need to run!” His feet start moving and he yells back for her to be careful with his arm, even as he feels the tingling burn cover his palm and in that supply closet, leaning against the door next to Robin they make eye contact. In that short second of connection he knows that she felt it to, that he’s just found his soulmate and despite his fear he’s so happy that it’s her. Later, after they had both puked up their guts and he had confessed to having a crush on her, Robin told him about Mrs. Click’s class and Tammy Thompson and how she’s sorry that he’s stuck with a soulmate who can never love him back. Steve blinks and suddenly his two soulmarks make so much more sense.

“Robin, I have another soulmark. I don’t… I don’t think you were ever a romantic soulmate for me.” He watches the relief and, maybe even, joy cover her face and she launches herself at him in a hug, squeezing him tight and he returns the favor completely ignoring his own pain.

The other soulmate comes over 8 months after meeting Robin. He was so grateful for having her in his life but he still wanted that other piece, he loved Robin and she loved him but he wanted romantic love too. Unfortunately for Steve, just like with Robin, his other soulmark was triggered when he was fearing for his life. He had just been dragged through Watergate and made into a chew toy for a bunch of demobats. Steve was just trying to catch his breath when they all heard the bigger hoard approaching and he knew he had to run. He made it surprisingly far before the pain of each step started to settle in, his feet dragging more and more and his pace slowing when someone moved in beside him, wrapping one arm around his back to settle his hand on his hip. Eddie grabbed the arm closest to him and dragged it over his shoulders, giving Steve a grin. “I got you, you can lean on me.” This only made Steve completely trip; the sudden onset of tingling burning at his side so close to his currently bleeding wounds had his left leg collapsing under his weight.

“Why does this always happen when I’m in danger?” Eddie froze and then a laugh burst forward.

“That makes so much sense with context. C’mon let’s get you somewhere to sit and we can talk more when you’re not bleeding over me.”

When he and Eddie got to Skull Rock, he and Robin made eye contact and he watched her eyes flit down to where Eddie’s hand was on his side. Her eyes grew about three sizes and he just shot her the best grin he could. He didn’t care that he had been bleeding all over his soulmate for the past few minutes - he had gotten blood on Robin when they found out that they were soulmates, so it seemed fitting for him to be doing the same to Eddie.

Years down the road he would look back and laugh at the drama surrounding him finding both of his soulmates. Eddie even joked that the universe gave him two to make up for his shitty parents, and Steve wasn’t going to argue.

Pretty but also scary boy. Looks like an older man. It's the face, it has a Keitel face. Maybe if the dog was smaller it could've been perfect.

🧡 Mr. Orange - Canaan

I dunno?? It looks Freddy-ish. Skinny, orange and a resting worried face. Not really a cop dog but he's trying. Also thought about putting a Basenji.

🩷 Mr. Pink - German wirehaired pointer

DOG WITH A GOATEE??? Struggled not to put a Chihuahua here. Looks a bit serious idfk. He looks like he's about to say that he's a professional.

💛 Mr. Blonde - Thai Ridgeback

Edgy character - edgy dog. Ridiculously quiet but scary. Also same forehead. Could easily imagine this dog shooting the whole jewelry store down.

🤎 Mr. Brown - Bull terrier

Silly fucking dog. Met one of these, it's like the most worry-free, braindead thing I saw. Will die if you don't pay enough attention to him. Also a Madonna fan.

💙 Mr. Blue - Scottish deerhound

Grandpa dog, also very quiet. Hesitated before putting this. This dog is too pretty to be compared to Blue but like... which dog isn't?

👤 Nice Guy Eddie - Irish setter

Fancy-ass fucking dog. Curly ginger. I can hear this dog yelling at the rest to calm down until "daddy" comes back. I don't know, it just looks lost.

👤 Joe Cabot - American pit bull terrier

Edgy sonuvabitch. Didn't know what to put here, it just looks short and grumpy so why not (it's the non-existent neck). Kinda feel bad for the dog now.

Mad that the only way you can appreciate Fallout 4 is when you have the option to Fast Travel removed.

And I mean like, physically disabled. The game will not allow you to fast travel (except for using the Vertibird grenades).

I was so sad by the distress call from Fallon's (even though I allowed it to loop for 30 minutes as I tried to get a Perfectly Preserved Pie). Listening to the crying of the woman trapped in the Jewelry Department safe.

Her final words were about how thirsty she was.

I'd beat the shit out of Joe

WAIT.

It's Starcourt. not vecna. It's Starcourt.

Steve and Eddie became low key friends in the winter of 84/85, got to be actual friends slowly, over the course of the semester. Wayne spent that time watching how his kid sits around kicking his feet and daydreaming with hearts in his eyes about a boy that'll deck him if he ever notices how Eddie feels. He watches his boy fail, again, while the Harrington kid graduates. Never liked him, never trusted him.

Eddie spends most of June hanging out at the mall, bothering Steve and Robin, and eating free ice cream. He knows that Steve is straight, but, he looks at certain of the kids Steve takes care of, at his friendship with Eddie, at how easily he gets along with Robin, and is pretty sure that Steve won't be a dick about it. If he finds out. When, more like, since Eddie doesn't broadcast it, but he doesn't keep it a real secret.

So they're friends, close friends, even though Eddie knows Wayne doesn't like him.

Then Steve's best friend comes back from camp, and Eddie is a nosy little shit, so obviously he gets involved with possibly spying on russians at a secret base. And he loves adventure, so obviously he goes with them and gets stuck in the elevator.

And Eddie's very best skill is his ability to pull attention onto himself, and away from others. So after Steve takes a hit or two, Eddie does what he does best, and gets beat to shit. Concussion that Steve is freaking out about before they get drugged.

Bathroom chat sees Steve talking vaguely about someone he likes. Robin comes out. Eddie comes out to take the focus off of her, and Steve, who was talking about Eddie, doesn't know what to say. It was supposed to be impossible, so he never had to think about what it really meant that he liked Eddie. But if Eddie isn't straight then... Robin figures it out, but before the three have time for more than mild queer panicking, Dustin's back, and they're in motion again.

Eddie takes another big hit during the fight, knocked unconscious. Safe. Survives it all because he hit the ground in a safer corner, but has a second concussion in the space of a few hours. On top of mystery drugs. They get him to the hospital along with the others that are injured, and Steve calls the trailer to let Wayne know.

Now, as far as Wayne knows, his boy didn't come home two days ago, and now he's getting a call from the boy that he knows his son has a crush on, to let him know that Eddie is in the hospital, beaten unconscious. And when he gets there, Harrington won't give him real answers about what happened. Cause a fire at a mall doesn't make Eddie vanish for days, and it damn well doesn't beat his face in.

And, yeah, shits fucked, so Steve sits on the floor outside of Eddie's room because he was genuinely worried that Wayne was gonna throw a punch. It's not like he can just say that they were fighting Russians who were trying to open a portal to another universe so they could find monsters to win the cold war. It'll be okay once Eddie wakes up. Bc then Eddie will insist on seeing Steve so they can finish that conversation they cut off, and Steve can explain that its okay if Eddie doesn't like him, that he still wants to be friends.

Instead. Two concussions.

Eddie wakes up and he doesn't remember much of anything past January of 85. He knows Steve isn't a complete dick, but they weren't friends then. Friendly acquaintances. That's it. And why would Eddie think to ask if the guy he knows from school is waiting in the hall for him?

Eventually, when the doctors have swarmed in and out a few times, Wayne appears and tells him that Eddie doesn't remember, so it's gonna be Wayne's choice on if Steve comes in. Wayne, who is sure that Eddie tried for something, and got beat for it. Yeah, maybe Harrington felt bad enough afterwards to get him to the hospital, but that doesn't undo the rest.

Steve's not allowed in, and Robin is the one to catch him when he falls. They talk, and Steve has the time now to explain it all to Robs. And look, yes, he wants Eddie back. He wasn't lying before, he's fine with it only being friendship, that's more than enough, but he wants his friend back.

Except, even if Steve was allowed close enough to talk to Eds, which he definitely isn't, Eddie getting all the memories back means that he'd be involved with the upside down stuff, and have the same nightmares the rest of them have. So. Maybe it's kinder not to?

While Eddie is sitting in his trailer, trying to figure out why the hell he has a shirt from the school's basketball team in his laundry. And why he has a half filled character sheet for an obvious beginner named Hair the Barbarian. And why he keeps hiding those pieces, and a dozen more beside, from the uncle he has always trusted with everything.

I don't like to write the fic, I like to write the world build for it, and then stop right before what should BE the start of the fic.

But. It's not the boys that do the work and solve it and get them back together. It's not dustin and the boys either. It's Wayne.

Hey. Eddie Memory loss AU where Steve and Eddie were friends all year bc of Hellfire but Wayne never really trusted the guy, despite Eddie saying he should bc he can see how his kid is in a constant state of hearteyes and Wayne remembers the way Richard Harrington was in school. So when Eddie wakes up with no idea why Harrington is in the room after Vecna, Wayne uses it as a way to keep Steve out.
