Finding Friends in Unexpected Places
For years now, Shelter Rockers have heard me add the name of my friend, Ed Searcy, to the mi she-beirach list whenever we pause over an open Torah scroll to pray for our relatives and friends who have been stricken with illness. Occasionally, people ask who he is—some interested because I have been adding his name to the list for so long and others, I suppose, because it seems curious that a rabbi would ask his congregation to pray so assiduously for the recovery of a Christian clergyman without feeling the need to explain their relationship or to chart its history.
I admit it’s been a long time. Ed was diagnosed with the double whammy of multiple myeloma (a chronic cancer of the plasma cells) and amyloidosis (a rare but serious condition caused by the accumulation of proteins in the form of insoluble fibers within the tissues of one’s body) six years ago in 2011. When he told me about the diagnosis, I asked what I could do for him. His answer was that I could pray for his recovery. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Why wouldn’t I have wanted to do whatever I could to ease his burden? He’s been my friend, after all, for more than thirty years. But I’ve never written about the specific way we met, which I think I would like to write about this week.
But before I get to the past, I want to write about the present. It has been, to say the least, a worrisome week. The twenty bomb threats phoned into Jewish institutions on Monday brought the grand total of such threats to almost ninety, including some made to targets relatively close at hand to us at Shelter Rock. Nor has it been a week merely of bad words: there have also been some very bad deeds to go along with them in the desecration of the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Philadelphia and the Chesed shel Emeth Cemetery in Union City, Missouri. In a different world, we would hardly take note of such pointless hooliganism. But the combination of threat, provocation, vandalism, and a general uptick in anti-Semitic incidents in general lends these acts of sacrilege an ominous aura they might otherwise not have.
But more unexpected—to me, at least—was the response to the vandalism. In Missouri, Vice President Pence went out of his way to visit the cemetery last Wednesday and actually took part in the clean-up. The governor of Missouri, Eric Greitens, did the same. And, while still at work at the cemetery, Governor Greitens took the opportunity to reveal that President Trump had phoned to ask him to convey the president’s good wishes to the clean-up crew for their work on behalf of the Jewish community and, more importantly, for their effort to show the world “that what happened [in Union City] the other night is not who America is.” Whatever any of us thinks about the current administration, yea or nay, the sight of the governor of Missouri and the vice-president of the United States rolling up their sleeves to restore a desecrated cemetery is a moving example of our national spirit and should be acknowledged as such.
But even more surprising was the LaunchGood.com campaign undertaken by two Muslim Americans, Linda Sarsour and Tarek el-Messidi, to raise funds, at first, to help restore the tombstones of Union City, which effort yielded $115,000 in just two or three days. And then campaign was expanded to include the effort to raise money to restore the damaged and/or toppled gravestones in Philadelphia. What the “real” motives of these people in doing this were, who knows? The cynic in me wants to imagine that this is just a good moment for American Muslims to raise their public profile in a very positive way. But the bottom line is that more than two-thirds of the donations have come from Muslim Americans, and it’s hard to see a conspiracy here even despite the million reasons to distrust unexpected largesse from unfamiliar quarters…and particularly quarters from which some of Israel’s harshest critics have come in recent years. I see that. And I certainly do not wish to assist people who otherwise work to hurt Israel and damage Israel’s reputation in their disingenuous effort to distance themselves from the charge of anti-Semitism merely by undertaking a LaunchGood campaign. I’m by nature neither a naïve person nor an overly trusting one.
Yet…even though I share the skepticism of many who have publicly questioned the motives of the givers, I’d like to think that we are witnessing an act of charitable kindness rather than a mere P.R. opportunity. A terrible thing happened. People responded…including people of whom we are reasonably wary. Still, I propose that we take the donations from Muslim America, and from so many other quarters as well, as well as the public gesture by the Vice-President and the Governor of Missouri (admittedly a Jewish person…but even so) and Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf and Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney, at face value, and allow them to suggest that the haven we have found in this place is real, that the patriotism we feel in our hearts for our country reflects far more than wishful thinking, and that the values that we presume to underlie the republic are intact and well. For another example of recent Muslim solicitude for our Jewish problems, this one Florida-based, click here.
And that brings me to the Reverend Searcy. My first pulpit was in Richmond, a town just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This was a long time ago. It was a season of brand new things for me: my first pulpit (although this was eight years after I was ordained, having taken a slight detour through the halls of academe on my way to the bimah), a new country, a new time zone, a new life style (it was the first time in my life I ever lived in a private home rather than an apartment), a new baby on the way…and a dozen other new thresholds to step over and new straits to negotiate.
Even though we had just finished a two-year stint in Germany, I don’t believe I had ever actually experienced real anti-Semitism until I came to Richmond. It looked calm. The people outside the congregation that I met here and there seemed pleasant and welcoming. The mayor of Richmond, Gil Blair, personally came to my installation to welcome me to his city. It all felt peaceful and good. And then, one Sunday morning only a few months after I was in place, the president of the congregation called me at 6 AM and asked me to meet him at the synagogue. I pulled on some clothes and drove over, and there I found what I had not even been savvy enough about the world previously to dread: the entire building painted with bright red swastikas and slogans so vile that even now, even after all these years, I still can’t quite bring myself to type them out for you to read. Trust me, it was awful. I was flummoxed completely. Clearly, we had to do something. But it wasn’t obvious what. Someone had already phoned the R.C.M.P. and they arrived promptly, but didn’t seem to take the painted slogans seriously as death threats (which is what they were, and unambiguously so), preferring instead to wave them away as vulgar graffiti. Eventually, they agreed to open a serious investigation. But that was still to come as I stood there in the cool morning air with the members of the Board of Trustees and pondered the best course forward.
What happened next was remarkable. The adjacent property was owned by a Catholic church, St. Joseph the Worker, and the oldest priest, whom I hadn’t even met yet, was named Father Pascale. I met him that morning when he arrived around an hour later not just to express his regrets formally and in person, but with an army of parishioners bearing pails and brushes, soap and solvent. They set themselves to cleaning the walls of our synagogue! And they did a fairly good job, although we eventually painted over the whole façade to make the vileness disappear entirely. But that was only the beginning.
We received letters from all across Canada, most of which came with checks to assist us in the clean-up. We heard from all the right people, including from the Premier of the province and the Member of Parliament who represented our riding. Mayor Blair came by several times to offer some support and encouragement. And in the context of all that good will, Ed Searcy came into my life.
In those days, he was the pastor of the South Arm United Church. He sent me a note in which he introduced himself and asked how he could help. I phoned and suggested we meet for a coffee and talk this through: I was shaken by the whole incident and wondered if he, being a real Canadian, might possibly have some insight into the larger picture I was facing that I as a newcomer lacked. And that was how I met Ed. He was kind, welcoming, reassuring. He reminded me—I’m sure he himself doesn’t remember exactly what he said, but I certainly do—he reminded me that the presence of evil doesn’t imply the absence of good…and he reminded me that the only practical way to combat the kind of viciousness and blind hated we had just encountered was to affirm our faith in the goodness of God. It was a simple sermon delivered over coffee at the edge of North America by young minister to a young rabbi. More than his insight, however, Ed extended his hand to me in friendship. And that is how I got to know Ed Searcy and why I invite the congregation weekly to join me in praying for his good health.
When I read about the desecration of that Jewish cemetery in St. Louis and the way people who aren’t “supposed” to care suddenly showed up to restore and repair the toppled stones, and how other Americans, including people who aren’t “supposed” to care about the stones in a Jewish cemetery, anted up not hundreds or thousands, but scores of thousands of dollars to assist in the restoration—I was brought back to my first experience of anti-Semitic violence on otherwise calm and quiet Geal Road in Richmond, B.C., an otherwise tranquil town filled with friendly, welcoming people.
So it turns out there are good people in the world! But that thought in turn inspires an unsettling, more-than-slightly-anxiety-producing question for us all to ponder: when tragedy, and particularly prejudice-tinged tragedy strikes other groups…does our example inspire the confidence and courage in those aggrieved souls that the efforts of so many from outside the Jewish community did in Missouri last week and in Richmond so many years ago? That, if you ask me, is the real question to take away from this whole story…and, if we dare, to answer honestly.

✨HL playlists by onlyforthebabes✨
(Edited to include 🎵when you know you know (HL6), 🎵close enough to touch (HL11), 🎵burnt romances (HL13), and 🎵too far gone (HL18))
This post is long overdue, but I've finally made a master list of all the HL playlists I've published here. They're listed in the order I created them, so there are some gaps in the numbers where I haven't posted (or maybe even finished) some, but I'll update if I ever publish more! I've put a lot of thought and time and love into these playlists, so I really hope y'all find something to enjoy here.
✨🎶
🎵a truth so loud
HL. The OG. A canon inspired playlist based on some of the most iconic H/L songs. (ft. 1D, Troye Sivan, Ed Sheeran, Lorde)
🎵honey (make this easy)
HL2. There’s no denying the chemistry between them from the moment they meet - so they don’t even try. While discretely hooking up with a fellow X Factor hopeful sounds like just another part of the fun, it’s hard to ignore that this thing between them is way more than physical, and “X Factor hopefuls” has become wholly inadequate to describe where they’re going. But in the midst of all the chaos, it’s hard to resist something this good. (ft. 1D, Hozier, Lizzo, Carly Rae Jepson)
🎵no matter how sweet, no matter how brave
HL3. New fame, new friends, new feelings. Jealousy gives way to mutual infatuation, which evolves into steadfast love. Growing up too fast doesn’t feel so scary when you’ve got someone to hold onto. (ft. 1D, Fleetwood Mac, Niall Horan, The Head and the Heart)
🎵Entirely
HLFOUR. Coming soon. (ft. 1D, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson)
🎵when you know you know
HL6. It's all about that one person... (ft. 1D, Maria Mena, Yellowcard, Beyoncé)
🎵one foot in sea and one on shore
HL10. A traveling sailor whose sense of home is the familiar warmth of local bars, a charming bartender in a seaside village, and a brief affair that leaves them both longing for a life far from everything they know. (ft. Regina Spektor, Bright Eyes, Feist, The Format)
🎵close enough to touch
HL11. Love can be frightening, for sure. (girl!direction) (ft. 1D, Louis Tomlinson, Hozier, Jake Scott)
🎵sunset couldn't save me now
HL12. Part-time suburban youth, summertime neighbors growing up together and blurring the lines of love and friendship; chasing dreams, traveling the world, and figuring out that sometimes home is a person. (ft. Sufjan Stevens, Vampire Weekend, Regina Spektor, Neutral Milk Hotel)
🎵burnt romances
HL13. A canon-compliant au where everything goes wrong, but love finds a way. (ft. The Weepies, Lewis Capaldi, Bleachers, The Head and the Heart)
🎵fell in love with the fire
HL14. Harry's long since accepted that fame comes with a closet. But a chance encounter with a friend from a past life may change everything (or, an au about identity, fame, missed connections, and giving love a chance) (ft. Florence and the Machine, Maren Morris, St. Vincent, Sam Smith)
🎵trip and i fall in
HL15. Undeniable chemistry turns a spontaneous hookup into fast friendship (with some pretty nice benefits). They know from the start it’s not exclusive, but that doesn’t stop anyone from catching feelings. (ft. Zayn, Ariana Grande, Brockhampton, Selena Gomez)
🎵learning to breathe
HL16. Harry and Louis have always been best friends, even within their close-knit group. Closeted, small town kids with little experience, an innocent first kiss turns into an agreement: to experimentally "date" in secret until high school ends. When it’s time to move on, they do. But as the years pass, they can never quite figure out how to let go. (ft. Maisie Peters, Julia Michaels, Lana del Rey, Lauv)
🎵too far gone
HL18. Love, illness, religion, and fear. A kiss between friends on a quiet winter's day changes everything. (ft. Sufjan Stevens, Brand New, Haley Heynderickx, Phoebe Bridgers)
🎵if i'm butter...
HL19. Louis’ an art student who spends his days wandering the city in search of inspiration while his hot-but-elusive craigslist roommate works ungodly hours as a baker. When the pandemic hits and the two near strangers are suddenly quarantined together, they find themselves growing closer in more ways than one. (ft. Relient K, BENEE, Fiona Apple, Samsa)
🎵pretend it isn't strange
HL20. A hopeless wanderer, lost and disillusioned with life, finds himself taken in by a small mountainside community: a friendly local band, a safe place to rest his head, and a stranger who makes it feel like home. Together they learn to let love grow. (ft. Wild Rivers, Ben Howard, Town Meeting, Birdtalker )
🎵yesterday (when you were young)
HL21. Coming soon (ft. Jon Bellion, AJR, Raleigh Ritchie, fun.)
🎵coming up lavender
HL22. New friends who feel like old ones, long drives home up the coast, and finding love in every color. Or, a girl!direction college road trip au (ft. Gretta Ray, dodie, Ingrid Michaelson, Mitski)
🎵it is what it is (till it ain't anymore)
HL23. An impending marriage, a secret affair, and either fate or bad timing. Harry and Louis fall in love one summer in rural Georgia. Years later, they meet again. (ft. Shania Twain, Kacey Musgraves, Gregory Alan Isakov, Andrew Bird)
And lastly, the playlists I've made based on other peoples' stories:
nothing but you on my mind 🎶for Nothing But You On My Mind by @absoloutenonsense
Louis Tomlinson is a PR manager hired to improve the image of royal bad-boy Prince Harry Styles. Unfortunately for him, that means being faced with the Prince's constant innuendos, incessant dirty jokes, and relentless flirting. Louis just wants to make it to Princess Gemma's coronation; once she's crowned Queen, his contract is up and he never has to see the Prince again. (ft. dodie, Julia Michaels, Dermot Kennedy, Lewis Capaldi)
little by little 🎶for Little by Little by @absoloutenonsense
Harry Styles is an omega who works at the London Planetarium, has lived in the same flat for ages, and is happy enough on his own. When he gets home from his first (horrible) attempt at dating in years, a new pregnant neighbor knocks on his door after smelling his cooking. He and Louis quickly become close, but their friendship gets complicated when Harry begins questioning who he is and what he likes. Or Harry discovers figuring out who you are is more complicated than a potato metaphor. (ft. Jordy Searcy, Bruno Major, Lizzy McAlpine, Sleeping at Last)

Current Event-Detroit man convicted of murder deserves new trial after state prisoner admits to 2004 killing.
Sierra Burton
Summary- A man from detroit is getting a different trial after he told the judge that he was the person who pulled the trigger in 2004. Searcy is his name and he’s 41 years old and is facing life in prison for shooting another man sitting in a parked car at the airport. Searcy then wrote a letter a sent it to someone in 2015 saying that he shot the person and he is a hit man. He is serving 52 years to life in prison and doesn’t know what to do. As they were going though all of Searcy files they found that the gun he used to shoot the guy doesn’t match the bullet seen. They also say that it isn’t his first time being in a case dealing with murder. He also shot 4 other people that was blamed on a 14 year old in 2007.
Significance- I chose this article because this article came up in my journalism my 8th grade year. It seems that they keep bringing this cases back out. This article is important to society because it’s important for people to always pay attention to how people move. This impacts his family and the people he used to hang around. My opinion on this is that they need to close his case and just keep him in jail.
One Question- Is this you guys first time hearing about this case ?

CARL’S BLOG: MAMIE, AN OZARK MOUNTAIN GIRL OF COURAGE
Author’s Note: Living dangerously was the name of the game. Believe me, I avoided most of this stuff. What were some of the stuff you did growing up?
9-20-20, Betty marries Ebb Gentry, Kent Barger is born, and creativity of entertainment becomes good pastime.
On March 9, 1953, Mamie and Ed received a letter from Darlene Barger announcing the birth of their first son. They named him Harvey Kent Barger. He was born on March 5 in Grants Pass, Oregon. “He’s a good-looking boy. He looks nothing like his ugly father,” Darlene said. The birth of Kent gave Ed and Mamie eight grandchildren. Kent and Ronnie were still outnumbered by the granddaughters 6-2. Kent was the first grandchild born outside of Arkansas. It was awhile before Ed and Mamie were able to see their new grandson. Oregon was a long way from Arkansas. On July 23, 1953, Betty married Elvin Gentry from Edgemont. They were married in Searcy by the Rev. Eugene Fowler. After they married, they moved into Betty’s house which was in the Lone Pine community. It was the house she and J. D. Stark lived in before his death. After Betty moved out, Edward and Mamie reassigned job responsibilities to the children who were old enough to work. Ella Mae was given the responsibility of sweeping the house every day and helping with the dishes. Willie and Jim took on jobs Betty had been doing. They got rather good at helping Mamie with washing clothes and ironing. Willie was assigned all the driving responsibilities as well as helping his father with the farm crops. Jimmy continued to milk two cows and help with the farm crops. Roy and Carl were given more cows to milk. Instead of Carl milking one cow, he was given two cows to milk. Roy continued to milk two cows and feed the hogs. It was not always work that occupied the Barger children on the farm. They still had lots of time to play. They enjoyed playing with their neighbor friends and cousins. One of the things the Barger boys enjoyed doing with Lynn Stark, Arnold Fulbright, and Lavaughn and L. J. Davis was to climb to the top of persimmon tree and ride it to the ground. After riding the tree to the ground, the boys would hold the tree down until some brave soul crawled on the top of the tree. After the brave soul securely attached him to the top of the tree, the other boys would release the tree propelling him into the sky. This was more thrilling than a roller coaster in an amusement park. They played cowboys and Indians, swam nude in the old blue hole, and climbed bluffs on the Little Red River. After climbing bluffs, they would dare each other to jump from the top of the bluff onto a pine or oak tree that had grown next to the bluffs. One slip of the hand would have meant death to any one of them. Strangely enough, everyone, except for Carl took the leap and shimmed down to the bottom of the tree. “I had more sense than try such a dangerous stunt,” Carl said.

College basketball wishes happy retirement to Tom Konchalski, revered inside the sport but unknown beyond
Legendary scout Tom Konchalski was standing alongside one of the many basketball courts stuffed inside the Sewall Center on the campus of Robert Morris University. He was easy to spot. It might be a challenge to locate him in a crowd of players, but among the few reporters congregating to watch the action at the Five-Star Basketball Camp, someone standing 6-6 was certain to tower above the crowd.
Konchalski stood above other scouts figuratively, as well. Few ever have had the same eye for talent, for what it is that separates a good high school basketball player from a great college basketball prospect. Hall of Fame coaches sought his opinion. All-Star players recalled how he discovered them.
MORE: Clearing up misconceptions about new NIL rules for student-athletes
On that day in July 2000, I was visiting Pittsburgh along with my wife to spend a few days with family and friends. She was out shopping with her sister and our niece, so I had an afternoon to sneak out to the Five-Star Basketball Camp and take in the hoop scene. But I only had the afternoon. We were meeting later for dinner, and missing was not an option.
“You have to see this young man, LeBron James,” Konchalski said to me as I squeezed in next to him.
“Really? OK, when does he play? What court?”
“He doesn’t play again until tonight. You HAVE to see him,” he said.
The urgency with which he issued this declaration made it clear I was going to be missing something extraordinary, even historic. It was like being told by The New York Times theater critic that you had to get to a performance of “Hamilton,” at the Public Theater, before it got to Broadway and everyone discovered it.
Even that many years ago, however, I’d been married long enough to understand an afternoon hall pass expired when the afternoon was over. Konchalski seemed almost defeated. He knew how I’d have appreciated that moment.
Now 73, Konchalski is retiring from his life’s work of publishing the HSBI Report, the scouting service to which most every major college basketball coach subscribed, and which has carried him on a journey across more than 40 years and thousands of miles, not one of which he has driven.
A native New Yorker, Konchalski never owned a car, using public transportation for much of his travels. He also never bothered learning to use a computer and doesn’t carry a cell phone. He composed his scouting reports using a typewriter. He compiles them for coaches to peruse, and employ, not for public distribution.
“Tom is one of the best and smartest human beings on this planet,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told Sporting News. “His instant recall of players, coaches, games and events is unmatched. He helped thousands of players get the opportunity to play college basketball at all levels. Every youngster that he talked about was important. With the Five-Star Basketball Camp, Tom and Howard Garfinkel created an experience for players and coaches that will not be duplicated. Tom is a true gift to the game of basketball.
Konchalski fell in love with the game watching Connie Hawkins in the late 1950s and completed his last reports in a year that will produce such future stars as Cade Cunningham and B.J. Boston. In between he scouted Michael Jordan, who currently is being celebrated in “The Last Dance,” an epic-length documentary series on ESPN. Jordan got into one Five-Star Camp session on Konchalski’s recommendation and wound up as the best player there.
“Tom Konchalski is one of the most kind and sincere souls in basketball,” Villanova coach Jay Wright told Sporting News. “He truly lived for others, always revering the great players, respecting every player. I think he is the most honest and precise evaluator of talent ever. One of a kind, never to be matched.”
Early in Konchalski’s career, he helped Tennessee find Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King in New York City. The “Ernie and Bernie Show” remains one of the most revered periods in the history of Vols basketball, delivering an SEC championship in 1977 and five victories in six tries against SEC power Kentucky. It was not long after that success, in 1979, that Konchalski chose to leave his job as a schoolteacher and scout full time for Howard Garfinkel, the originator of the Five-Star camps who owned HSBI. Konchalski subsequently purchased the service from the man known to all of basketball as “Garf” and continued until now.
MORE: SN staff picks best high school basketball players they ever saw
Hofstra coach Joe Mihalich told Sporting News he followed Konchalski’s work, “Only for like 40 years! I am so sad. There may be more scouting services, but there will never be another Tom Konchalski. He is an icon, and truly loved by the entire basketball world. This is the end of an era.”
For the past decade or so, basketball writer Adam Zagoria has been Konchalski’s “chauffeur and roommate,” mostly at the annual Nike EYBL at the Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C.
Those are long days, with four to six games occurring simultaneously and often running from 9 a.m. well into prime time. Konchalski is so respected that Zagoria often would find himself frustrated by the mere act of trying to leave the community center gymnasium when the games were complete.
“It’s 11 o’clock at the end of the day and you want to go out and get some food … and it takes an added 30 minutes because everybody wants to talk to him with him and spend some time with him,” Zagoria told SN. “I’m not going to lie: That gets a little frustrating.
“Last year in the parking lot, we ran into Jamal Mashburn. He was there to watch his son. Jamal’s face lit up when he saw Tom, couldn’t have been happier to see him and shake his hand. So we spent another 10-15 minutes standing in the dark, listening to Jamal talk about how Tom first scouted him and was one of the first people to evaluate him.”
Konchalski owns an astonishing memory of the players he scouted; players who’d been in his reports would tell stories about how, even decades later, he would recognize them and immediately rattle off what school they’d attended and some of their old teammates.
He also owns an encyclopedic knowledge of the game. When returning last winter from the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., a three-day tournament for top high school teams, Konchalski and Zagoria stopped at a diner and began to discuss where this past season’s Montverde Academy team, featuring Cunningham and Florida State-bound Scottie Barnes, would rank among the best high school teams ever.
Konchalski told Zagoria the three best high school teams ever were the Power Memorial teams featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor) from 1963 to 1965. He also cited the Power Memorial’s 1970 team with Len Elmore, Jap Trimble and Ed Searcy, the early 1980s Baltimore Dunbar teams featuring Reggie Williams, Muggsy Bogues and David Wingate, and the 1989 Jersey City St. Anthony’s team that included Bobby Hurley, Terry Dehere and Jerry Walker.
Zagoria thought that was worth sharing with the world, so he put Konchalski’s thoughts on Twitter.
Almost immediately, Zagoria received a response from Oak Hill Academy coach Steve Smith, eager to learn where the best Oak Hill teams might fit into that discussion. When Konchalski spoke, the basketball world was listening.

The readers of the Arkansas Times have once again pushed their plates away, belched politely and named the best restaurants, chefs and dishes and other categorical superlatives for our Readers Choice issue.
[Fuente]

2018 NFL Preview: The Cam Newton-Norv Turner marriage is crucial for Panthers
yahoo
Yahoo Sports is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per weekday in reverse order of our initial 2018 power rankings. No. 1 will be revealed on Aug. 1, the day before the Hall of Fame Game kicks off the preseason.

It wasn’t a move that got as much attention as a head coaching change, or a splashy free-agent signing, but the Carolina Panthers made a switch that is as important as any other in the NFL.
Suddenly, Norv Turner is in charge of Cam Newton’s prime.
Head coach Ron Rivera fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula, citing the desire to bring in some new ideas to an offense that had gone into a funk since a tremendous 2015 season. Immediately, Turner was rumored to be the preferred replacement, and it was no surprise when he was hired. Theoretically, Turner could be so good he gets another shot at a head-coaching job, or so bad he’s fired in a year or two. Realistically, the Panthers’ new offensive coordinator will be guiding Newton well into his 30s.
What would Newton’s legacy be right now, as he heads into his age-29 season? His college legacy is set for his amazing 2010 season at Auburn. His pro legacy isn’t as well established. His NFL story probably starts with his 2015 MVP, when he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl. He has undeniably had a good career, but a great one? As a passer he has only one 4,000-yard season (as a rookie), has exceeded 24 touchdowns only once and has thrown double-digit interceptions each season. His ability as a runner is a huge plus on his resume. Only Michael Vick (6,109) and Randall Cunningham (4,928) have more rushing yards among quarterbacks than Newton, who has 4,320 yards in 109 games. Vick played in 143 games and Cunningham 161. Newton already holds the NFL record for a quarterback with 54 rushing touchdowns.
There’s a lot to like, but it feels like there could be another level for Newton. Maybe that place could take Newton back to the Super Bowl, and perhaps to the Hall of Fame. It’s now on Turner to help unlock it.

Turner has been a good offensive coordinator for decades, though it is troubling how his time with the Minnesota Vikings ended. He quit midseason, saying he thought he was holding the offense back, though there also seemed to be differences with head coach Mike Zimmer. While Turner is mostly known for work with Troy Aikman and Philip Rivers – big, strong-armed quarterbacks who could throw it downfield, just like Newton – he also adjusted to have success with Teddy Bridgewater, who isn’t like Aikman, Rivers or Newton. Turner can adapt to fit his personnel’s strengths. Newton, however, seems to fit what he prefers. Newton has never been the type of quarterback who will work a defense underneath with precise short passes that generate a huge completion percentage. And Turner mostly hasn’t been that kind of coordinator.
As a passer, Newton should be comfortable throwing deep to Devin Funchess, first-round pick D.J. Moore and tight end Greg Olsen off play-action (Turner’s offenses have had six running backs lead the league in rushing, so a strong run game is always a foundation). Also, Turner understands what makes Newton special and won’t change that.
“He’s incredible as a runner. He’s just an amazing player at that position,” Turner said, according to the Panthers’ transcripts. “There’s two ways that he ends up carrying the ball, obviously: It’s designed runs, and then he’s made a lot of plays where he’s kept the ball in passing situations or when he drops back to throw it and the opportunity to run opens up. I think that’s a real threat to defenses. Defenses, they’re really bothered by that. He’s always got to have that as part of his game. He’s always got to have the threat to run. Depending on who we’re playing, how we’re playing and things that are going, I think it’s always going to be a part of what we do.”
The Panthers have done very well with Newton. He helped turn around a franchise that took him with the first overall pick. Carolina is 49-26-1 over the past five years when Newton starts. Had the Panthers finished a dream season in 2015 with a Super Bowl win, that would be Newton’s legacy. Ask Eli Manning or Joe Flacco how Super Bowls can carry a reputation. Instead, Newton is entering a key point in his career in which he’ll define how we remember him.
However Newton’s legacy ends up, it will be a big part of Turner’s football legacy too.

Only one 2017 first-team All-Pro player changed teams this offseason: guard Andrew Norwell, who left the Panthers for Jacksonville. The Panthers also lost some familiar veterans: defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, safety Kurt Coleman, tight end Ed Dickson and running back Jonathan Stewart. While teams don’t want to get stuck hanging onto old veterans too long, that’s a lot of experience and production out the door. Among acquisitions, the largest contract by far went to defensive tackle Dontari Poe (three years, $28 million). The other additions were low-priced contributors: receiver Jarius Wright, cornerback Ross Cockrell, safety Da’Norris Searcy, running back C.J. Anderson. I like the first-round pick of receiver D.J. Moore, and third-round cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Rashaan Gaulden could contribute right away. Norwell was a big loss, and that knocks down the grade a bit.
GRADE: C+
The Panthers, as usual, have a lot of talent in the front seven. Tackle Dontari Poe replaces Star Lotulelei, and he should form a really good duo with Kawann Short. End Mario Addison has 20.5 sacks over the past two seasons. Once Thomas Davis returns from a four-game suspension, the Panthers have a tremendous trio of linebackers with Luke Kuechly, Shaq Thompson and Davis. There are plenty of questions in the secondary, but the front seven covers up a lot of issues.
The Panthers had one big stumbling block last season. Including playoffs, they went 11-3 against everyone not from New Orleans, and 0-3 against the Saints. The Saints won those games by a combined 36 points. Forecasting the Panthers for 2017, you have to consider they play in perhaps the toughest division in the NFL. They didn’t match up well against the Saints last season. The Falcons will be good again. The Panthers’ games against the Buccaneers come in Weeks 9 and 13, long after Jameis Winston’s suspension expires. The Panthers have a tough road, starting with trying to figure out the Saints.
Sage Rosenfels, a former NFL quarterback who played for Norv Turner, had some interesting comments to the Charlotte Observer about the relationship between Turner and Cam Newton.
“Cam has twice the talent of a Drew Brees – stronger arm, physically, just a lot of those skills. But it doesn’t feel like to me that he brings that same energy that his teammates can feed off,” Rosenfels told the Observer.
“It’s not necessarily X’s and O’s. But maybe Norv can help him bring that type of tenacity and energy to not only make Cam better and take less hits, but make his teammates around him better.”
It also sounds like Turner will be coaching Newton pretty hard.
“Norv’s demanding. He feels strongly about his offense. He feels strongly about the plays he has designed over the years, helped design, and the way he sees the game,” Rosenfels said, according to the Observer. “And he wants that offense to run smooth and be very precise, and that starts with the quarterback being very precise.
“He puts the most pressure on the quarterback more than any other position, without a doubt.”
When the offensive coordinator change was made, the conversation centered on two topics: Cam Newton, and how to get even more out of running back Christian McCaffrey.
McCaffrey, the eighth pick of last year’s draft, was solid as a rookie with 1,086 yards from scrimmage. He caught 80 passes. But the Panthers want more. Since McCaffrey isn’t a traditional between-the-tackles running back like fellow 2017 rookie Leonard Fournette – though McCaffrey has the ability to run inside – it’s important for the staff to get creative.
The good news is Norv Turner is already talking up McCaffrey, even making a comparison to Darren Sproles, who Turner coached early in Sproles’ career.
“He’s got such talent, you’re just going to keep finding ways to get him the ball and try to create more space for him,” Turner said in an interview with the team’s site. “That hard-nosed running between the tackles he can certainly do, but I don’t know that’s what you want to lead with him.
“Christian is ahead of [where Sproles was], and there are some things we can do that he did, but Christian can run wide receiver routes. So yeah, there’s a lot of things we did with Darren that apply, and there are some things that I think we can do differently with Christian.”
From Yahoo’s Liz Loza: “Christian McCaffery had a heck of a rookie campaign, as evidenced by his current draft stock. While I’m infatuated with the 22-year-old’s talent, I’m not interested in paying peak value for his services.
“The RB11 overall in half-point PPR formats in 2017, McCaffery was the most targeted RB in the league. He also hauled in the third most receptions at 80 catches on the season. How much better can he realistically do? An increase in totes is the only place for him to significantly up his production. Maybe he averages 10 carries per game – and stays healthy in the process – but that’s not a gamble that I’m willing to take in the first round. Not when perennial producers like Devonta Freeman and Jordan Howard are still on the board.”

The Panthers had a tremendous record in close games last season. Carolina was 7-1 in contests decided by seven or fewer points, and won all four games decided by a field goal or less. No team had a better winning percentage in close games. Only Pittsburgh had more wins in games decided by seven points or less, with eight victories. As I often say in these previews, extremely good or bad records in close games don’t tend to repeat. If the Panthers went .500 in those games last season, we’re having a lot different conversation about them.
CAN LINEBACKER LUKE KUECHLY STAY HEALTHY?
Unfortunately, it’s a question we’ll ask about Kuechly the rest of his career. Kuechly, one of the league’s most dynamic players, has dealt with multiple concussions. Last year he suffered another one in a game against the Eagles, and missed one game. The Panthers’ defense looked entirely different in that loss to Philadelphia without Kuechly, and that’s no surprise. His value is tremendous. Over the past three seasons, Carolina is 26-11 when Kuechly is in the lineup and 5-5 in games he has missed with concussions (h/t to ESPN).
Hopefully Kuechly won’t have to deal with more concussion issues, but it will be a concern the rest of his career.
The Panthers have posted at least 11 wins three of the past five seasons. Cam Newton is a difference maker and if he takes to Norv Turner’s scheme, we know he can play at an MVP level. I’m not sure another 15-1 season is possible, but if the Panthers can get over the Saints hump, they could win the NFC South. And because of Newton, they could be a team that makes noise in the playoffs.
The 2013 and 2015 Panthers were dominant teams. The 2017 version was good, but a little lucky to reach 11-5. They’re not going 7-1 in close games again. That’s not to say the Panthers can’t be in playoff contention again, but some improvements will have to happen to fight regression in one-score games. Because Norv Turner has never coached a quarterback quite like Cam Newton, it’s not a sure thing the offense will click right away. The Panthers’ foundation is strong so I doubt they will collapse, but in a tough division they could see a significant step back.
I have the Panthers at a strong No. 13 on my countdown, and there are two NFC South teams ahead of them. This is a rough division. The Panthers could end up being a very good team and still finish third in their division, in a conference that has 8-10 playoff-level teams. There will be some very good teams in the NFC that don’t make the playoffs, and even though I like the Panthers, they’ll be in that group.
